Fraser, Ian, and Peter Marsack. Bush Capital Year. CSIRO Publishing, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643101654.

Abstract:
The Australian Capital Territory is a treasure trove for naturalists, despite being without a coastline, without rainforest or without deserts. A wealth of biodiversity is found there, due to the close proximity of three major habitat types: the great western woodland grassy plains bump up against the inland edge of the coastal hinterland mountain forests, while the whole south-eastern Australian Alps system reaches its northern limit in the Brindabella Ranges. Each of these habitats has its own rich suite of plants and animals, so a great diversity of life can be found within an hour’s drive of Parliament House. A Bush Capital Year introduces the fauna, flora, habitats and reserves of the Australian Capital Territory and includes the most recent research available. It also emphasises often unappreciated or even unrecognised urban wildlife. For each month of the year there are 10 stories which discuss either a species or a group of species, such as mosses and mountain grasshoppers. While never anthropomorphic, many of the stories are written from the organism’s point of view, while others are from that of an observer. Beautiful paintings complement the text and allow better visualisation of the stories and the subjects. 2011 Whitley Award Commendation for Regional Natural History.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the trade, commerce, and intercourse clauses in the Indian Constitution. Part XIII of the Indian Constitution consists of Articles 301 to 305 and encompasses ‘Trade, Commerce and Intercourse within the territory of India’. The focus of this chapter is on the controversy surrounding compensatory taxes. It first compares the Indian framework with Australian law on trade, commerce, and intercourse, before discussing the controversy over compensatory tax that began with Section 3 of the Assam Taxation (On Goods Carried by Roads or Inland Waterways) Act 1954 and whether the concept of compensatory tax has a place in Indian constitutional law. It then considers the Indian Supreme Court ruling in the Atiabari and Automobile Transport cases and concludes by analysing unresolved questions, such as whether the imposition of entry tax levied under Entry 52, List II, violates Article 301.

Swan, Michael. Frogs and Reptiles of the Murray–Darling Basin. CSIRO Publishing, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9781486311330.

Full text
Abstract:
The Murray–Darling Basin spans more than 1 million square kilometres across the lower third of Queensland, most of New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, northern Victoria and the south-eastern corner of South Australia. Wildlife habitats range from the floodplains of the Basin to alpine areas, making the region of special ecological and environmental interest. This book is the first comprehensive guide to the 310 species of frogs and reptiles living in the Murray–Darling Basin. An overview of each of the 22 catchment areas introduces the unique and varied climates, topography, vegetation and fauna. Comprehensive species accounts include diagnostic features, conservation ratings, photographs and distribution maps for all frogs, freshwater turtles, lizards and snakes recorded in this important region.

Abstract:
The look and feel of metropolitan France has been a notable preoccupation of French literary and visual culture since the 1980s. Numerous writers, filmmakers and photographers have been drawn to articulate France’s contrasting spatial qualities, from infrastructural installations such as roads, rail lines and ports, to peri-urban residential developments and isolated rural enclaves. In doing so, they explore how the country’s acute sense of national identity has been both asserted and challenged in topographic terms. This wide-ranging collection of essays explores how the contemporary concern with space in France has taken shape across a range of media, from recent cinema, documentary filmmaking and photographic projects through to television drama and contemporary fiction, and examines what it reveals about the state of the nation in a post-colonial and post-industrial age. The impact of global flows of capital, trade and migration can be mapped through attention to the specificities of place and topography. Investigation of liminal locations, from seaboard cities and abandoned industrial sites to refugee camps and peasant smallholdings, interrogates the assertion of a national territory (and thereby, a national identity) through the figure of the hexagon, and highlights the fluidities, instabilities and lines of flight which render it increasingly unsettled.
