Abstract:
Sabina Brzozowska’s monograph consists of a coherent collection of comparative and historical and literary studies of various artistic and ideological aspects found in selected works of Polish and European modernism. The author focuses on the dramas by Stanisław Wyspiański, Stanisław Przybyszewski, Tadeusz Rittner, Tadeusz Miciński and on the prose by Wacław Berent, Miciński and Thomas Mann. The interpretations of the works included in the monograph show a common area of European nineteenth-century culture, especially of the modernist period. Brzozowska’s reading experience focused on uncovering the intertextual and comparative relationships between, for instance, Wyspiański’s Wesele (The Wedding) and Mann’s Buddenbrooks, Berent’s Ozimina (Snow Crop) and Czarodziejska Góra (The Magic Mountain), Rittner and Ibsen. High art literature of the modernist period found its counterpoint in popular culture, including the new media. The author reconstructed this development dynamic of modernist culture in multiple versions.

Abstract:
“As If It Were True…”: Tadeusz Rittner’s Dubious Realism and Dubious Modernism This paper is an attempt at redefining selected plays written by Tadeusz Rittner in the modernist and symbolist convention. In the 1950s, they were evaluated by Zbigniew Raszewski as among the playwright’s lesser achievements. I have analysed three texts: the one-act plays Sąsiadka (“The Neighbour”) and Odwiedziny o zmroku (“A Visit at Dusk”) as well as the play Don Juan. There is no doubt that the author did not avoid stylistic exaggeration in his modernist works, but one can also find some distance from the conventions of the Young Poland period as well as the use of the grotesque, theatrical sham, and the poetics of intimate drama in these plays. Rittner’s Viennese character is an alibi for his aesthetic choices and the manner of staging emotions. The evaluation of these plays, which were written in the symbolist and modernist convention, was affected by the theatrical reception, the artists’ superficial reading of the instructions included in the stage directions, and the pigeonholing of the works as realism with a hint of Romantic mood.

Macroscopic derivation of the entrainment in a supersolid cylinder induced by a surface elastic wave (of small amplitude) propagating along the flexible interface is conducted by considering the nonlinear coupling between the interface and the rarefaction effect. We obtain the critical bounds for zero-volume-flow-rate states corresponding to specific rarefaction measure and wave number which is relevant to the rather small critical velocity or disappearance of supersolid flows reported by Kim and Chan or Rittner and Reppy.

Abstract:
Abstract On the basis of literature values of various spectroscopic quantities, the "experimental" five derivatives (1st to 5th) of the repulsive functions at the equilibrium distance were evaluated for the 20 alkali halide molecules, retaining the truncated Rittner model for the attractive forces. A self-con-sistency test showed that the used experimental values are reliable.Different analytical forms of the repulsive potential were then critically evaluated by comparison with the experimental derivatives. The repulsive functions were characterized by two, three, four or five empirical parameters. It has been shown that only functions with at least three parameters are sufficiently accurate to reproduce spectroscopic quantities such as ße and γe : the classical two parameter functions appeared too crude in this context.

Abstract:
Moses and Gitla Ritter were accused of murdering the charwoman Franciszka Mnichówna. The accusation and trials which followed revoked the blood libel. In three circumstantial trials (1882–1886), despite the lack of evidence, the Ritters were found guilty and sentenced to death. Owing to the “ritual” nature attributed to the presumed murder, the trials became media events, followed by an international audience. The author discusses the course of the trials, considering whether and how the municipalities in which they took place exploited their unexpected popularity for promotional purposes. What importance did the urban elites attach to the trials? How can we interpret the three guilty verdicts, and what symbolic significance can be assigned to them?

Abstract:

Abstract:
The HPOL spectropolarimeter, previously operated by the University of Wisconsin at Pine Bluff Observatory (PBO), has been restored and relocated to the University of Toledo's Ritter Observatory. We achieved first light with HPOL at Ritter Observatory on 2012 March 11. We present a detailed instrument description of HPOL in its current configuration at Ritter Observatory, and a description of the standard observing procedure. We performed frequent observations of unpolarized standard stars to calibrate the instrumental polarization. We present polarimetric calibration results for observations spanning 2012 March 11 to 2013 May 2. Our calibration work shows that the systematic uncertainties of observations obtained with HPOL at Ritter Observatory are comparable to, and sometimes outperform, the systematic uncertainties obtained at PBO. We have successfully recommissioned the HPOL spectropolarimeter at Ritter Observatory, making it once again available for ongoing science observations.

Abstract:
Abstract In the middle of the nineteenth century, the German historian of philosophy Heinrich Ritter and the Jewish scholar and Orientalist Salomon Munk had a debate on the history of Jewish Philosophy. This debate is an example of how Salomon Munk’s work functioned to point up the reciprocal influences between Jewish, Arab and Christian Thought in the Middle Ages. Munk, who was a scholar within the Wissenschaft des Judentums, a Jewish movement that promoted the scientific study of Judaism, criticized Ritter’s History of Philosophy. In fact, Munk noticed that in his work, Ritter mentioned only a few references to Jewish thinkers like Maimonides. Ritter’s response was that Christian historians of philosophy knew too little about this subject in order to give a qualified judgment. Nevertheless, later on, in the second edition of his History of Philosophy, Ritter added many important details on Al-Gazali, Ibn-Badja and Ibn-Roschd after the reading of Munk’s articles. Ritter also shaped an entirely new paragraph on the history of Jewish philosophy in the Middle Ages using above all Munk’s seminal studies on Avicebron’s Fons Vitae.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this article, Josef van Ess describes the supervision process of his doctoral thesis, which was presented in Bonn in 1958 and subsequently published as Die Gedankenwelt des Hārit al-Muhāsibī in 1961. His supervisor was Hellmut Ritter (d.1971), at that time based in Frankfurt and Istanbul, who had suggested this focus on the writings of one of the eminent figures of the religious scene in the early Abbasid period. By making ample use of his correspondence with Ritter— related both to his doctoral thesis and to an article on al-Muhāsibī which he wrote for İslam Ansiklopedisi —van Ess highlights the specific ways in which Ritter engaged with the problems of philological analysis, scientific style and the authenticity of sources in the course of this study of al-Muhāsibī's life and works. The article sheds light on the changing attitudes expressed by Ritter towards the dissertation and its author—moving from reservation, outright rejection and critique towards gradual acceptance and well-meant advice. The article concludes with a discussion of the relevance of philology as a “handcraft” (Handwerk) rather than a “method” (Methode), and reflects on the path which university education has taken over the last fifty years.

Abstract:
Phosphinooxazoline (PHOX) ligands are an important class of ligands in asymmetric catalysis. We synthesized ten novel D-fructose-derived spiro-fused PHOX ligands with different steric and electronic demand. The application of two of them was tested in asymmetric allylic alkylation. The ligands are prepared in two steps from readily available 1,2-O-isopropylidene protected β-D-fructopyranoses by the BF3·OEt2-promoted Ritter reaction with 2-bromobenzonitrile to construct the oxazoline moiety followed by Ullmann coupling of the resulting aryl bromides with diphenylphosphine. Both steps proceeded mostly in good to high yields (57–86% for the Ritter reaction and 35–89% for the Ullmann coupling). The Ritter reaction gave two anomers, which could be separated by column chromatography. The prepared ligands showed promising results (er of up to 84:16) in Tsuji–Trost reactions with diphenylallyl acetate as model substrate.

The first section examines the differences between the reception of Hegel’s legacy by Ritter and by the Frankfurt School. The latter views Hegel primarily as a forerunner of Marx, while Ritter perceives Hegel as committed theorist and advocate of modern state and civil society. The second section focuses on Ritter’s attitude towards the post-revolutionary society. In particular, it explores Ritter’s interpretation of the concept of modern university and interest in history as a reaction to rapid modernization. The last section turns to Ritter’s criticism of the rejection of the contemporary social and political realities – represented by both right-winged reactionaries and far-left progressivists – and also demonstrates Ritter and his School’s contribution to intellectual legitimization of the post-war German Federal Republic.

Abstract:
1,5-Dimethylenecyclooctane (5) and 7,11-dimethylene-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5,9-propano-5H-benzocycloheptene (7) undergo efficient intramolecular cyclization and Ritter reaction in a one-flask procedure. Similarly,11-methylene-5,6,8,9-tetrahydro-5,9-propano-7H-benzocyclohepten-7-one (10) may be converted into cyclic hydroxy amide products. Alternatively, a combined intramolecular cyclization and double Ritter reaction with acetonitrile can be carried out to produce 7,9-bis( acetamido )-6,7,8,9,10,11-hexahydro-5,9:7,11-dimethano-5H-benzocyclononene monohydrate (12) whose crystal structure (C19 H24 N2 O2 H2O,P21/ca = 10.477(l), b = 14.595(1), c = 14.493(l) , β =127.900(3), Z= 4) was determined with a final R = 0.039. Hydrogen-bonded dimeric units of the bis(amide) are surrounded by six water molecules which are involved in three different hydrogen-bonded arrangements. Mixed bis(amide) products may also be produced from (10) via the hydroxy amide, demonstrating that the bis(amide)(12) results from sequential Ritter reactions.
