Abstract:
Human life has always been shadowed by risks like disease and natural disaster, but modern life is distinctively risky. The risks we now face are morally cognizable. For they are, in the main, subject to our control—indeed, they are typically our creation. The risks that define modern life are therefore our responsibility. As they are largely imposed by people on people, they call for moral assessment. This book addresses some of the central questions stimulated by our contemporary practices of imposing risk, including the nature of risk, as the concept is employed in a normative framework of risk imposition; the moral signifiance of imposing risk on others; the possibility of a right against risking; and the moral standards governing the imposition of risk on others.

Abstract:
Risk is endogenous. It builds up during booms, as measured risks fall and individual market participants increase their risk-taking. Risk is then manifested during downturns, as measured risks rise and individual market participants recoil from risk taking. Prices (including the market price of risk) therefore play a dual role: they are simultaneously a reflection of market participants’ actions as well as an imperative for their actions. This book is organized around several practical examples in financial economics that illustrate these principles.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the importance of risk is emphasized and risk is distinguished from gambling. Projects without risk (that is, where the outcome is certain) lead to very little progress; however, projects with a very high degree of risk (i.e. overwhelmingly likely to fail) likewise do not advance knowledge all that much. What is important about risk is that, if there is at least a reasonable chance that the project will work, there is also a reasonable chance that there will be a corresponding benefit. This chapter reviews the need to assess and manage risk in order to make progress, and presents some risk management techniques, such as the use of a risk register. It also discusses the need to recognize the importance of, and the need to maintain, reputation, as well as the need for avoidance or mitigation of reputation risk. Finally, the risks and hazards surrounding scientific misconduct are identified and discussed.
