Kennedy, Steven D. "An assessment of the impact of riverboat gaming development on the historic community of Rising Sun, Indiana : a case study." Virtual Press, 2001. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1221303.

Full text
Abstract:
The proliferation of gaming in America has increasingly brought certain development pressures to bear on historic resources and has been an emerging issue in the field of historic preservation for the last decade. Early experiments to harness gaming as a catalyst for preservation activity in four historic mining communities in South Dakota and Colorado received much attention. More recently, riverboat casinos have affected historic communities throughout the Midwest. From the standpoint of preservation, these examples have had both positive and negative effects for historic resources. This study examines some of the lessons learned and uses them to illuminate the case of Rising Sun, a small rural community in southeastern Indiana with a casino riverboat. The goal is to determine whether gaming development, if properly planned, situated, and regulated, can be a positive force for preservation activity while still maintaining the original character of the host community.

Abstract:
This case study presents a comprehensive discussion of economic and administrative impacts of riverboat gaming on a small city, Rising Sun, Indiana. The history of gaming is traced in the United States, Indiana, and Rising Sun. Evidence suggests that most of the impacts in Rising Sun have been positive financially. It allows for upgraded infrastructure, new city building construction and improved community services. Two foundations have been created to help surrounding communities and Rising Sun, as well as an unique revenue sharing plan that encompasses counties and cities beyond Rising Sun and Ohio County. The study also determines that the riverboat casino has not helped existing businesses in the community, and that "economic development" of those businesses has not flourished because of the gaming casino. Administratively, this study does suggest that the casino's revenues and presence has affected changes in the town's leadership, as well as small increases in crime and other social impacts.

Abstract:
This research is focused on lean and green manufacturing using a printing company in South Africa as a case study focusing on their printing division. The reason for addressing the printing division of the company was to develop a lean and green manufacturing plan to address the concerns of resource utilisation and waste disposal in the printing division. The research looked at the concept of lean and green individually as well as together and by analysing the relationship between the two concepts. The outcome was that environmental “green” waste is embedded in the seven types of lean waste which is overproduction, waiting, transport, inappropriate processing, unnecessary inventory, unnecessary motion and waste due to defects (Moreira, Alves and Sousa, 2010 cited in Pampanelli, Found and Bernardes, 2014). It was found that the company under consideration had not been familiar with these concepts but learnt and understood the value it could bring to the company. The research concludes with the plan using the 5S tool to reduce the seven types of waste linked to lean and green manufacturing.

Abstract:
In March 1942, the 2nd Battalion, 131st Field Artillery Regiment, 36th Division, surrendered to the Japanese Imperial Army on Java in the Dutch East Indies. Shortly after the surrender, the men of the 2nd Battalion were joined as prisoners-of-war by the sailors and Marines who survived the sinking of the heavy cruiser USS Houston. From March 1942 until the end of World War II, these men lived in various Japanese prison camps throughout the Dutch East Indies, Southeast Asia, and in the Japanese home islands. Forced to labor for their captors for the duration of the conflict, they performed extremely difficult tasks, including working in industrial plants and mining coal in Japan, and most notably, constructing the infamous Burma-Thailand Death Railway. During their three-and-one-half years of captivity, these prisoners experienced brutality at the hands of the Japanese. Enduring prolonged malnutrition and extreme overwork, they suffered from numerous tropical and dietary diseases while receiving almost no medical care. Each day, these men lived in fear of being beaten and tortured, and for months at a time they witnessed the agonizing deaths of their friends and countrymen. In spite of the conditions they faced, most survived to return to the United States at war's end. This study examines the experiences of these former prisoners from 1940 to 1945 and attempts to explain how they survived.

Abstract:
By the 1960s-70s, most Western commentators agreed that Japan had rehabilitated itself from World War II, in the process becoming on the whole a reliable member of the international community. From the late 1970s onwards, however, as Japan’s economy continued to rise, this premise began to be questioned. By the late 1980s, a new ‘Japan Problem’ had been identified in Western countries, although the presentation of Japan as a dangerous ‘other’ was nevertheless familiar from past historical eras. The term ‘Japan-bashing’ was used by opponents of this negative view to suggest that much of the critical rhetoric about a ‘Japan Problem’ could be reduced to an unwarranted, probably racist, assault on Japan. This thesis argues that the invention and popularisation of the highly-contested label ‘Japan-bashing’, rather than averting criticism of Japan, perversely helped to exacerbate and transform the moderate anti-Japanese sentiment that had existed in Western countries in the late 1970s and early 1980s into a widely disseminated, heavily politicised and even encultured phenomenon in the late 1980s and 1990s. Moreover, when the term ‘Japan-bashing’ spread to Japan itself, Japanese commentators were quick to respond. In fact, the level and the nature of the response from the Japanese side is one crucial factor that distinguishes ‘Japan-bashing’ in the 1980s and 1990s from anti-Japanese sentiment expressed in the West in earlier periods. Ultimately, the label and the practice of ‘Japan-bashing’ helped to transform intellectual and popular discourses about Japan in both Western countries and Japan itself in the 1980s and 1990s. Moreover, in doing so, it revealed crucial features of wider Western and Japanese perceptions of the global order in the late twentieth century. Debates about Japan showed, for example, that economic strength had become at least as important as military power to national discourses about identity. However, the view that Western countries and Japan are generally incompatible, and share few, if any, common values, interests or goals, has been largely discarded in the early twenty-first century, in a process that demonstrated just how constructed, and transitory, such views can be.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to analyse time-related structures in John McGahern's novels and short stories. The first part is sentence-based. I deal with the main linguistic forms expressing time in the English language before summing up Genette's theory on story time and narrative time. These considerations are followed by the detailed analysis of three short stories. The second part focuses on the narrative level. We successively examine each of the six novels in order to expose the evolution of style and of themes. The last part builds on the conclusions of the second and encompasses the short stories. It gives a bird's-eye view of McGahern's specific vision of time by relating the experience of the characters to that of the author and of the reader

Piedra, Miguel M. "Flume investigation of the effects of sub-threshold rising flows on the entrainment of gravel beds." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2010. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/2134/.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent research on sediment transport in gravel bed rivers shows evidence of the influence of sub-threshold flow history on values of entrainment thresholds (Paphitis and Collins, 2005; Monteith and Pender, 2005; Haynes and Pender, 2007; Haynes and Ockelford, 2008). The research presented here analyses the effect of the characteristics of hydrograph rising limbs (flow magnitude and duration) on entrainment thresholds of gravel beds, with discharges ranging from 0.25-1.6 times the estimated bed threshold flow and durations from 0.5h to 6h. This analysis uses results from flume experimentation. Entrainment thresholds were determined by two well documented methods: a) particle movement counts (visual method, Yalin, 1977); and b) the reference transport method (RTM) (Parker et al., 1982a; Shvidchenko et al., 2001). Results obtained with near-uniform and uniform bed material sizes show a clear influence of flow magnitude and duration on entrainment thresholds, with bed resistance increasing up to c. 25% for longer durations of antecedent flows when using the visual method, similarly to Paphitis and Collins (2005). The results from the unimodal gravel bed suggest an intermediate duration of rising limb (c. 2h) producing the strongest bed, with more mobile beds resulting from both shorter and longer rising limbs. Total bedload transport rates reduce with increased bed resistance, this effect is also noted during the stability test phase. These results are used to develop a new simplified method for estimating critical bed shear stress using only total bedload data. The performance of a new formulation for bedload rates derived in this thesis is tested against a number of traditional bedload transport equations and appropriately discussed. In-depth analyses of bed surface and bedload size composition and surface grain structure show that bed surface undergoes little change of size composition, with a slightly proportionally larger reduction of fine content, suggesting penetration of fines below the surface. The analysis of coarse-grain bed surface structures, mobility and clustering, based on the size class containing D90 and using digital images taken under UV light, suggests that the surface distribution of coarse grains has a primary role on bed stability.

Abstract:
What are the incentives of cooperation in rising powers groupings ? What are the underpinnings of club diplomacy by rising powers ? Through the case study of the India-Brazil-South Africa(IBSA) forum, this thesis explores the concept of ‘emergence’ in international relations – described here as a social construction – and the proliferation of selective clubs between emerging/rising powers as an expression of the rise of these powers. Following a pluri-disciplinary approach and mobilizing the sociology of collective action, this thesis defends that IBSA’s objective functions (political coordination, promotion and increase of south-south cooperation) obey to strategic aims (legitimization, autonomization, socialization) in order to further their international integration. The growing tendency of collective action through selective clubs in the South acts as a means for social differentiation between rising powers groupings and traditional developing countries groupings like the Non-Aligned Movement and the G77 although they often defend similar positons. However rising powers clubs ‘collective action does not necessarily result in sustainable integration of these emerging powers by established powers in global governance decision-making process ; but they cast light on the evolving institutional dynamics and institutional adaptation on the global level

The packaging machinery industry progress has been developed based on small-medium enterprises, as this industry survives in a small scale market environment, thus, the amount of competitors have been climb up during past 50 years, without a doubt, this market has became tremendous huge. In recent years, all developed countries in worldwide have encountered competitions and it relates to demographic issue and cost of labour. Moreover, Industry 4.0 topic has triggered a great transformation of industry production; intellectual production helps developed countries to cost down labour expense, and keeps improving quality to boost up the competitiveness of enterprises. Therefore, these enterprises from developed countries do not need to establish production plants in developing countries to down costs and expenses. Industry 4.0 is not just a growing topic amongst enterprises, it’s re-lating to the competitiveness between nations. Intellectual production has to work with intellectual production devices and equipments, packaging machineries are crucial equipments when we focus on a whole line pro-duction, from front inner packaging and final outer packaging, and it con-nects to warehouse and logistics, the significance of packaging machineries is comparable to production machineries. Despite of Taiwanese packaging industry does not stand a great mar-ket share in this world, but we’re a significant production base and nation, and the exporting value is 80% of total output value, with this figure, it’s quite high in this industry, all enterprises should take this as a serious matter, and it’s all about the competitiveness. For SMEs in packaging in- dustry, they are facing lack of professions, labours, lands, and the invest-ment cost is relatively high compare to other developed countries. The en-tire environment has great affect on all enterprise’s competitiveness. As this Industry 4.0 revolution wave rose, it’s definitely a turning point, so enterprises should follow this wave to climb up or drowning by this wave and disappeared? As one of the packaging machinery enterprises, I hope this research paper helps us to understand more about this industry in Taiwan, by fac-ing international challenges and the performance of Taiwanese packaging machinery enterprises, the present, and the future development and con-text to provide reference to this industry.

The booming of tourism provides great business opportunities to the homestay industry. However, many of the inexperienced homestay entrepreneurs lack of managerial skill and relavant know-how, which results in failure. In order to reduce the risk of the homestay entrepreneurs, this study aims at the first and maybe the most important. On the basis of STP analysis (market segmentation - target market selection - market positioning), this study combines several analysis techniques including Five-Force Analysis, Marketing-mix(4Ps), SWOT, and NPV analysis to discuss the location choice of Mirage Seaview Homestay before entering the homestay industry. According to the proposed analytical framework of location choice, it shows the best location of Hualien's homestay industry to a homestay entrepreneur is the downtown segmentation, followed by sea-view and mountain-view segmentations based on the criteria of NPV. No matter which location the homestay entrepreneurs choose, they should try to differentiate their homestays from others, so that they are able to raise the price, the occupancy rate, and eventually the profit rate. The contribution of this study is to provide an analytical framework of location choice for the entrepreneurs in the homestay industry.

Iversen, Colleen Marie. "Forest Responses to Rising Atmospheric CO2: Causes and Consequences of Increased Fine-Root Production in a CO2-Enriched Sweetgum Plantation." 2008. http://trace.tennessee.edu/utk_graddiss/456.

Full text
Abstract:
Increased forest growth in response to rising atmospheric concentrations of CO2 may mitigate a portion of fossil fuel emissions, especially if carbon is sequestered in longlived biomass or soil pools. Greater carbon uptake under elevated atmospheric [CO2] in forested ecosystems may facilitate the production of small diameter (i.e. “fine”) roots used for nutrient acquisition. Increased fine-root production in forested ecosystems may affect soil carbon storage and nitrogen cycling because fine roots live and die in the span of a year. My dissertation research took advantage of a long-term, on-going Free-Air CO2-Enrichment experiment in a sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) forest stand at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to investigate the causes and consequences of increased fine-root production under elevated [CO2]. To examine the premise that N limitation was the cause of increased fine-root production in the CO2-enriched sweetgum stand, I fertilized plots in an adjacent sweetgum plantation with 200 kg ha-1 of N as urea. The relative C flux to wood production that I observed in the fertilized treatment is consistent with the premise that increased root production in the adjacent FACE experiment is in response to N limitation. To examine the consequencesof increased fine-root production under elevated [CO2], I: (1) quantified fine-root biomass and N inputs at several soil depths using a long-term minirhizotron data set combined with continuous, root-specific measurements of root mass per unit length and [N], and (2) allowed fine roots grown under current and elevated [CO2] to decompose in a common garden experiment by modifying existing litterbag methodology. I found that C and N inputs via root mortality were doubled under elevated [CO2], and half of the inputs were below 30 cm soil depth. However, CO2-enrichment had no effect on fine-root chemistry or decomposition rate, and therefore more root detritus may be incorporated into long-lived soil organic matter under elevated [CO2]. Quantification of the effects of elevated CO2 on the fate of a greater quantity of fine-root detritus, especially at depth in the soil, will provide critical information needed for predicting processes such as long-term soil C storage and N cycling in response to environmental change.
