Abstract:
The processes of manufacturing machines and appliances show a continuous tendency to increase the degree of automation. An important role in the automation of manufacturing processes is played by the constructive technologicality of the product. It is important to use a minimum number of components, which have a construction as technological as possible in terms of automation. In this context, the use of supporting rings as fasteners is welcome. The design of the installation devices of these rings requires the knowledge of their deformation forces, information that is missing in the profile literature. The authors set their goal to develop the method for calculating the forces required to deform the supporting rings with a rectangular transverse profile and their maximum allowable deformations. The calculation relationships were obtained by formalizing the supporting ring through a bar with a fixed end and studying its deformation using Mohr's integral. The article lists some types of the supporting rings used in the construction of machines and appliances, their advantages and disadvantages, aspects of their automatic installation: deformation and installation methods, precision of joint orientation, optimal design, calculation of forces required for deformation and the maximum permissible deformation value. As a result of the research carried out, recommendations were developed regarding the calculation of some constructive parameters of the devices for installing the supporting rings.

This paper describes a homemade lead, 15 cm-thick, cylindrical shaped shield of a 9" x 9" NaI(Tl) gamma spectrometric well-type detector. Commercially available lead was melted into cylindrical rings. The molds for the cylindrical rings were made from hard-cooked beech wood which was pressed in a sand mold to make the final mold. After cooling, the lead rings and ring edges were sanded, transported from the foundry to the laboratory of the Department of Physics in Novi Sad, Serbia, and assembled in the detector shield. The total mass of the shield is 2622 kg. Some lines inside the shield are reduced almost 200 times and the total count rate (280 keV-3000 keV) is reduced 132.7 times.

Analytical relationships have been developed for the design of modified tapered roller bearings based on standard bearings of the 7000 type. The modification consists in replacing the rolling elements in the form of tapered rollers with a straight generatrix by concave rollers with an arc generatrix, which are in contact with the convex raceways of the rings. By calculation, the advantage of modified roller bearings in terms of service life in comparison with standard roller bearings of similar overall dimensions is shown.

Deflections of a thin cylindrical shell that is used in carding machines, either as a swift or a doffer, are analyzed in this paper. The shell may have supple supports at its edges and inner strengthening in the form of rings. The task of calculating the deflections has been solved by dividing the shell into longitudinal beam elements. The optimization procedure for criteria of mass minimum or deflection minimum is used. A numerical example to define selected construction data is presented along with the results.

Abstract:
There are a number of problems in mechanical engineering technology. One of them is related to the installation on the machine and the previous processing of thin-walled rings, which are widely used in mechanical engineering. Due to the low bending stiffness of thin-walled rings after processing there are a large magnitude of rigidity of the form (deviation from roundness). As production experience has shown, in the conditions of mass production, it is advisable to use fungal mandrels and adjustments to reduce shape errors. They allow for a small radial gap between the holes of the ring and the fungal cam to have extended contact rings with cams along the angular coordinate. However, there are no methods for calculating the parameters of contact interaction with cams, considering a number of factors, primarily the radial clearance. Hence, it is impossible to calculate more accurately the error of the form after processing. In this paper (it is supposed to be continued), based on methods for calculating flat rings of construction mechanics of machines, a method for determining the stress-strain state of a thin-walled state is proposed, considering the contact pressure. In this case, the semiangle of contact of the ring with the fungal cam and the shape of the contact pressure plot are determined. This allows you to calculate the stress state of the thin-walled ring and the shape error when processing more accurately in a fungal mandrel, as well as reasonably assign the dimensions of the mandrel parts. Due to the exceptionally large number of calculations in the calculations according to the proposed method, it can only be implemented using a computer program, which creates great difficulties in analyzing different source data. Therefore, it is planned to rework the completed developments into an engineering calculation method with graphs in dimensionless form.

The hereby text is a short study on the relationship between architecture and jewellery. In the first part, it presents the history of occurrence of architectural forms in jewellery from antiquity to present day in the European culture. The second part delivers the examples of contemporary artefacts, particularly rings with microarchitecture. The analysis of the collected examples proves that architecture – its form, construction and detail − is a motive of decoration willingly used in jewellery design, often of a symbolic meaning related to the household or the temple (wedding rings, ritual rings). Nowadays, especially in the 21st century, microarchitecture in jewellery often emerges with reference to the place of origin, i.e. the famous building being, most frequently, the commemoration of a journey, able to bring back the memory of a visited city. The architectural jewellery, whose meanings and functions are the subject of the hereby study, has undergone many transformations throughout history. Even though it has transitioned from simple to complicated and decorative forms, from precious and rare to cheap and popular objects of mass production presenting the miniature replicas of buildings, the jewellery nearly always symbolises the city. Much less often the jewellery design occurs with reference to the metaphorical meanings of buildings as a representation of permanency (the tower in Alessandro Dari’s jewellery) or marital union (the house and the temple in Jewish rings).

References 371Structural DNA nanotechnology consists of constructing objects, lattices and devices from branched DNA molecules. Branched DNA molecules open the way for the construction of a variety of N-connected motifs. These motifs can be joined by cohesive interactions to produce larger constructs in a bottom-up approach to nanoconstruction. The first objects produced by this approach were stick polyhedra and topological targets, such as knots and Borromean rings. These were followed by periodic arrays with programmable patterns. It is possible to exploit DNA structural transitions and sequence-specific binding to produce a variety of DNA nanomechanical devices, which include a bipedal walker and a machine that emulates the translational capabilities of the ribosome. Much of the promise of this methodology involves the use of DNA to scaffold other materials, such as biological macromolecules, nanoelectronic components, and polymers. These systems are designed to lead to improvements in crystallography, computation and the production of diverse and exotic materials.

The ultimate consequence of the current shortfall of students seeking higher education in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is a lack of technical professionals trained to operate and maintain complex weapon systems crucial to the defense of this nation. A hands-on interactive exhibit able to capture the imagination and ignite curiosity is a powerful tool to advance the strategic goal of raising the number of students studying these disciplines. Vortex rings are a naturally occurring phenomenon that provides a medium for capturing the attention while providing the opportunity to teach complex subjects related to stable and unstable equilibrium, stochastic systems, and conservation laws. The diaphragm valve designed in this thesis provides the centerpiece for such an exhibition. The valve is capable of producing a broad range of vortex-ring bubbles through adjustment of three variables. The seal pressure, actuating pressure, and cycle time of the triggering solenoid valve each contribute to the type and quality of bubble produced. The behavior of the device through a select range of parameters is presented and future work to produce a fully interactive exhibit is discussed, to include mechanical design, electronic circuitry, and micro-controller coding.

This thesis details the design and construction of a rig for studying surface condensation and a rig for creating anodized metal oxides (AMOs). The condensation rig characterizes condensation for different surfaces; this is done with the use of known heat transfer principles to calculate characteristic heat fluxes and heat transfer coefficient values. Preliminary results have been shown to follow predictions derived from existing heat transfer principles, and have confirmed existing literature's assertion of increased effectiveness of dropwise condensation over filmwise condensation. The AMO rig fabricates anodized metal oxide surface samples by subjecting wafers coated with thin metal layers to voltage in the presence of acidic electrolytes. Initial fabricated anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) samples have shown to display the characteristic hierarchal nanopore structure of known fabricated AAO in literature. Both the condensation rig and the AMO rig will be used in current and future condensation and superhydrophobic surface research by the Varanasi group in the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Abstract:
The discovery of the novel thermal cyclization of enediyne molecules within the Parsons group during studies directed towards the total synthesis of lactonamycin has stimulated an intense research into the cyclization of the enediynes. In this research different functionalised enediynes were synthesised to investigate:- (i) the scope and limitations of the thermal cyclization reactions, (ii) the proposed biradical mechanism for the cyclization reactions, (iii) the intermolecular trappings of the proposed biradical, and (iv) the effect of sterically demanding groups on the rate of cyclization. In the process of testing these objectives, we have been able to synthesize highly functionalised heterocyclic rings by simple thermal cyclization reactions without using any metal catalyst. We have discovered that the cyclizations may have involved free radical mechanism or an ene reaction, followed by a Diels – Alder cycloaddition reactions. Interestingly the cyclised compound 2.1 shows two stereogenic centres at C2 and C4 with an absolute configuration of R and S respectively. An in-depth exploration of the stereochemistry of these reactions may increase their application in controlling the stereochemistry of ring systems through simple metal free thermal cyclization reactions. Confirmation of the specific mechanism constitutes an ongoing research within the Parsons group. Conclusively cyclization of highly functionalised enediynes had been proved to be a versatile route to the synthesis of diverse heterocyclic compounds. The ease of cyclizations of a majority of the enediynes in this study has shown that functionalisation and diversification of the core enediyne systems could be utilized in the synthesis of pharmaceutically important antitumour drugs.

Abstract:
The theme of memory and sorrow can be traced in the art of jewellery since antiquity and had several meanings: romantic (until death do us part), mourning (in memory of the deceased), philosophical (memento mori, remember death). This type of ring still serves as a memorable element of death in the tribes of Africa, Mexico, in the subcultures of the Goths and Punks. The thesis is dedicated to the study of the design features of the memento mori ring from antiquity to the 19th century.

Skytte, af Sätra Ulf. "Wear of piston rings in hydrostatic transmissions." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Machine Design (Div.), 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-432.

Full text
Abstract:

This study focuses on the wear of piston rings in a hydraulic radial piston motor. The piston ring has to satisfy increasing demands for reliability and longer service life. It has two contacting surfaces, the face and the flank, and operates under a boundary lubrication state.

This first part of the project aimed to detect and characterise piston ring wear. Measurement by weighing gives an overall value for wear defined as loss of mass. Two-dimensional form and surface roughness measurements show the distribution of wear on the piston ring face in contact with the cylinder bore and the piston ring flank in contact with the piston groove. Three-dimensional analyses, both quantitative and qualitative, allow the wear mechanisms to be identified.

The wear of piston rings from an actual hydraulic motor was characterised. As well, rig testing was performed in two different test rig set-ups, one simulating the sliding movement of the piston ring and the other the tilting movement at the end of the strokes. Wear during the running-in period was investigated, and the findings indicate that the period when this takes place is of short duration. In the long term, mild wear makes the surfaces smoother than they were when new, resulting in a very low wear coefficient. Significant levels of wear were measured on both contacting surfaces of the piston ring. In cases in which the flank exhibits more wear than the face, the wear on the flank can be reduced by proper design of the piston groove.

The second part of the project aimed to evaluate use of a textured surface for the cylinder bore counter surface and a coated surface for the piston ring. Three modelling experiments were performed to characterise the friction and wear properties under lean boundary lubrication conditions. Under such conditions, textured surfaces have the advantage of retaining more lubricant and supplying it over a longer time. Stable friction was also a distinctive feature of the textured surface. Use of a coating could also possibly reduce the amount of wear. Though a smooth surface, like a polished one, is hard to beat for a working texture, a coated surface is far ahead of a smooth uncoated one. Different manufactured and commonly used cylinder bore surfaces, including textured ones, were evaluated in the sliding movement test rig. That allowed favourable wear properties, such as lowest wear coefficient, to be determined with the use of a roller burnished surface.

A final part of the research involved simulating wear on the piston ring face throughout the entire service life of a hydraulic motor. This allowed us to determine the roles of surface roughness and coating in prolonging service life and achieving acceptable and secure piston ring operation. The model is simple and realistic, but still needs to be refined so as to correspond even better to reality.

AbstractRelying on the prefabricated construction project of a university in Guangxi, the standardization design of the building structure is proposed for the low standardization of prefabricated building design and serious conflicts in on-site construction, and the reinforced U-shaped ring is especially proposed for the problem of node collision in site construction. Advanced connection technologies such as buckle connection and steel slot connection and new components such as laminated truss floor slabs and corrugated pipe through-hole prefabricated columns. At the same time, BIM technology is used to verify the technical scheme. The result shows: the standardization degree of the integrated design of building structure proposed in the article High, can significantly improve the design and production efficiency, and the use of new connection technology and new components can effectively reduce the collision of steel bars and facilitate construction.

Abstract:
This paper surveys common gasket materials and construction types evaluated against sealing conditions. The end-user often asks the question, “Which type of gasket should I use for this application?” While much attention has been recently focused on temperature/pressure performance, other end-user concerns include whether or not a particular joint is capable of achieving a desired leakage range (e.g., tightness) and how well a gasket may compensate for some non-ideal flange issues. Different gasket materials/constructions are more forgiving than others. Selected gaskets often used in the chemical process industry will be compared for minimum gasket seating stress to achieve various tightness levels, the required “chemical service tightness” gasket stress against the “max out” component stress for a typical joint, and associated gasket compression. This paper compares ASME Class 150 NPS 3” and 4” joints using gaskets of various materials and constructions. Materials include fiber, filled and expanded PTFEs, flexible vermiculite, and flexible graphites. Construction types include sheet-based rings, spiral wounds, groove-profiles, and corrugated metal. Comparing typical stress and compression ranges for the various materials and constructions will help the end-user learn to narrow the selection of available gaskets and achieve a more economical bolted joint design.

Abstract:
This paper has presented two constructive solutions of rational using of frontal rigid gear couplings with spherical gear in circle arc type Gleason, knowing as curved frontal gear coupling, on small dimensions, ones for simple direct dividing and second for simple differential dividing, and geometrical development possibility of new family of frontal coupling and small size. The frontal gear coupling type Gleason are formed from two rings, one with concave gear and other with convex gear, being characterized by great twist moments of capacity transmission, realizing a precision angular position, fast central connection and assuring of optimal conditions for manufacturing of mass production and low cost. One new application of small frontal gear couplings was external diameter of O̸100mm and O̸120mm, assured a higher accuracy of angular location of ±2″ and a great carrying capacity for couplings by using of compound rest of lathe with ultra precision location. A second application has presented a new landing of simple direct and differential dividing using one or more pair of Gleason’s gear coupling due to construction of new indexing tables with ultra precision in metal cutting.

Abstract:
Abstract Totally enclosed induction motors in which the stator core is pressed in the frame are in general used in industrial machines and manufactured with similar construction around the world. These motors produce a strong electromagnetic noise, which is caused by resonance between the natural frequencies of the stator core and the harmonics of electromagnetic forces. Therefore, it is very important to estimate its natural frequencies at the stage of design. As the first stage of research to estimate the natural frequencies of the stator core pressed into the motor frame, the dual rings were chosen as the object of studies. They are similar to the motor in construction and are easy to use to solve the problems. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the tight fit to the natural frequencies and to find an analytical method by FEM. The authors have found that the introduction of spring elements with radial and circumferential spring constants at the contact surfaces provides accurate calculated results of the natural frequency by FEM. This paper describes about the spring constants obtained from experiments and analysis. As a result, when the spring constants in the radial direction are infinite and those in the circumferential direction are variable, it is clear that the spring constants for natural frequency analysis by FEM were expressed as a function of contact pressure on the contact surfaces. In the second stage, the measurement and calculation of natural frequency in the actual stator core with a frame was performed, and these results showed good agreement. These spring constants will be useful in FEM analysis of stator cores pressed into cylindrical induction motor frames.

Full text
Abstract:
In July 2007, China entered a new era of sustainable, safe, and ecologically sound energy development by committing to build four AP1000™ units to be constructed in pairs at the coastal sites of Sanmen (Zhejiang Province) and Haiyang (Shandong Province). Both sites have the planned ability to accommodate at least six AP1000 units. The Westinghouse AP1000 is the only Generation III+ reactor to receive design certification from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). With a design that is based on the proven performance of Westinghouse-designed pressurized water reactors (PWRs), the AP1000 is an advanced 1100 megawatt (MW) plant that uses the forces of nature and simplicity of design to enhance plant safety and operations. Excavation commenced for the first of four China AP1000 units in February 2008, and placement of the basemat concrete for Sanmen Unit 1 was completed on schedule in March 2009. This was soon followed by the placement of the first major structural module; the auxiliary building. As part of localization and the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) desire for self-reliance, a China-based module factory is constructing the major modules and manufacturing the containment vessel plates. The fabrication and welding of the containment vessel bottom head for Sanmen Unit 1 is now complete. The 2010 milestones for Sanmen Unit 1 include the setting of major modules such as the reactor vessel cavity, the steam generator, and refueling canal modules, plus containment vessel rings 1, 2, 3, and 4. All major equipment orders have been placed and the first deliveries are beginning to arrive. The technology transfer is also well underway. The Haiyang Unit 1 basemat was placed on schedule in September 2009 and Sanmen Unit 2 Nuclear Island (NI) concrete basemat placement was completed a month earlier than the milestone date of January 2010. Sanmen Unit 1 will be fully operational in November 2013 followed by Haiyang Unit 1 in May 2014. Operational dates for Sanmen Unit 2 and Haiyang Unit 2 are September 2014 and March 2015, respectively. As one of the world’s largest consumers of energy, China’s path in achieving sustainable energy has profound global economic and environmental consequences. The contract with the Westinghouse and Shaw Consortium for four AP1000 units is the largest of its type between the People’s Republic of China and the United States.

Abstract:
<p>The wheel-spoke shaped pretension structure which is one of the architects' favorite structure types has the advantages of reasonable stress, beautiful design, and it can fit with the architectural aesthetics smoothly. Through studying on the geometrical parameters of the wheel-spoke shaped pretension structure, we find out the rational ratio range of compression ring outside to the tension ring inside. In order to improve the structures' bearing performance, we also bring out the idea that the structural boundary can be misaligned with the architectural boundary. Besides, we find that the support column in the place of the compression ring outside can improve structural stiffness, and we analysis the column's influence to the structural bearing performance. At last, by studying the suspended column's influence to the structural bearing performance and architectural sight line, we figure out the suspended column's rational height.</p>

Mudryj, Igor, and Igor Ivaneіko. The Use of Small Drilling Equipment in the Arrangement of Pile Foundations in Compressed Conditions. Intellectual Archive, September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.32370/ia_2022_09_11.

Full text
Abstract:
The procedure for finding technological parameters for the installation of pile foundations with small-sized drilling rigs, when developing design and technological documentation in compressed construction conditions, is considered. Methodological approaches to the choice of technologies for the construction of pile foundations are shown, depending on the dimensions of the small-sized drilling machines used, the required area for their placement, storage areas, and auxiliary equipment. in compressed conditions of construction. The existing normative documents do not set out separate requirements for the development of projects for the execution of works in compressed construction conditions, these norms do not provide for the definition of rational erection schemes for the selected set of mechanization in the dimensions of a specific construction site, which is characterized by various restrictions and obstacles. The proposed requirements for the use of mechanization methods in the conditions of compacted buildings during the installation of pile foundations based on a preliminary analysis of the parameters of the construction site: engineering and geological condition of the site; internal brevity of the designed structure; external brevity of the construction site; dimensions of the driving car; sites for the location of additional equipment, warehouses, unloading areas. Taking into account practical experience in the development of work projects and the analysis of current regulatory documents, made it possible to establish the main requirements for the use of small-sized drilling rigs in densely built-up conditions.
