Corti, Giulia. "Educational assortative mating and the rise of hypogamy: causes and consequences." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Trento, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11572/323980.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation explores recent trends in educational assortative mating in Western countries. In particular, the rise of hypogamy is analyzed, focusing on its causes and consequences. The dissertation aims at providing new evidence on issues concerning the rise of hypogamy at the individual level. As for its causes, changes in the partner market composition are analyzed in a life course perspective as a possible driver of hypogamy, underlining the dynamic nature of its role during the partner search. Moreover, elements from the social psychology field such as the activation of behaviors to find a partner are analyzed. Finally, the dissertation studies how partner choice shapes processes of social reproduction, and in particular educational reproduction. A penalty for hypogamy is found among higher educated women, but it does not persist across generations. The dissertation provides two main contributions to the literature. First, it provides evidence of the relevance of adopting a life-course approach when looking at dynamics of union formation, and in particular hypogamy. Second, it provides evidence of the importance of partner choice for social reproduction processes, especially among women.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1990.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 39-41).
This thesis examines the potential application of the L-shaped courtyard house in an American context. Privacy for the dwelling and its grounds is a key issue to be addressed. It is shown than a traditional single-family detached house will provide sufficient privacy on lots of one-quarter acre or more. However, an alternate solution must be developed in higher-density applications of one-eighth acre or less. The principal design elements desired in a traditional home are identified and incorporated into an alternate design solution. The courtyard house is proposed as an alternate and it is shown that, contrary to popular belief, such a house form can function in temperate climates without excessive heat loss. The reason for prizing an L-shaped courtyard house over other variations in a high-density application is explained in light of privacy and solar access issues. A detailed discussion of design elements in an L-shaped application include: inter-unit privacy issues, the courtyard size and passive solar heating applications, the dwelling layout and interior zoning, entry location, Circulation, facade treatment, parking, grouping or clustering, and expansion potential. It is demonstrated that the L-shaped design will satisfy American standards within a high-density urban context of eight to twelve units per acre.

Kang, Youngkol. "The rise of Korean chaebols from the perspective of organization theory." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185257.

Full text
Abstract:
This study has sought to probe the origin of Korean chaebols by employing theories that have been developed to account for the rise of American business organizations. By examining the top four chaebols qualitatively through detailed case analyses and 143 business groups quantitatively through statistical analyses, this study tests hypotheses raised by the three theoretical perspectives. The major findings of this study indicate that the political economy has been the dominant factor that contributed to transforming mediocre business groups into large chaebol groups. In particular, an organization's relationship with the state was of utmost significance. This study also indicates that the institutional isomorphism approach can complement politically motivated or efficiency-oriented theories. One of the major findings of this study is that Chandler's theory accounting for the rise of Korean chaebols is weak. However, its weakness does not stem from its main proposition that strategy calls for structural reform, but from its premise that growth strategy and structure presuppose economic and technological development. Williamson's transaction cost economics has a limited capability to account for the rise of the Korean chaebol. It is argued that the relative weakness of this theory may be inherent in its "universal" nature, which makes little provision for societal and cultural differences between the United States and Korea.

FRANCHINI, EMANUELA. "ROLE OF ALOG FAMILY GENES IN INFLORESCENCE PATTERNING IN ORYZA SATIVA AND ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/714283.

Abstract:
Inflorescence architecture is a key agronomical trait that determines fruit and seed yield. Understanding the genetic basis of inflorescence architecture will not only contribute to elucidate crop evolution/domestication mechanisms but also improve crop grain yield. Flowering plants develop different types of inflorescences, such as racemes in Arabidopsis and panicles in rice. The architecture is established during the early stages of reproductive development and it is determined by the activity of different meristem types and by the timing of the transition between indeterminate meristems to determinate ones. Inflorescence development is finely regulated by a genetic network that includes meristem identity genes and genes that regulate their expression; many genes are already known but others have still to be characterized to provide insight into how this complex process is controlled. Transcriptomic analysis performed in rice and in Arabidopsis through laser microdissection of different meristematic tissues highlighted differentially expressed genes belonging to the ALOG family suggesting their role in inflorescence patterning. We focus on G1L1, G1L2, and G1L5 of rice and on LSH1, LSH3, and LSH4 of Arabidopsis. G1L5 is already known to be a major regulator of inflorescence architecture, whereas LSH3 and LSH4 seem to have a role in meristem maintenance and organogenesis. Their expression profiles were analyzed by qRT-PCR and RNA in situ hybridization experiments using meristematic tissues from both species. We are also generating single and double/triple K.O mutants in different combinations by CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing technology to have a better understanding of their role in inflorescence patterning. The data so far obtained demonstrate the role of G1L1 and G1L2 in inflorescence branching and spikelet number determination and we also propose a role for G1L2 in root development. Furthermore, LSH1 seems to be involved in meristem maintenance and organ differentiation, and LSH3 in stem elongation. We propose the hypothesis that LSH1, LSH3, and LSH4 play a redundant function in inflorescence development.

Herbaut, Raynald. "L'adoption et la filiation dans les pays musulmans de rite sunnite." Perpignan, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004PERP0547.

Full text
Abstract:
Muslim family law, to which the main civil legal codes are related, is based primarily on the Koran and has vowed to remain traditional. Devised for believers, this system places Muslim States outside certain important principles expressed in the universal declaration of the rights of man. Also, the Muslim world remains foreign to the Hague Convention which succeeded in passing several agreements aiming at unification of the law to be applied to families. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate Muslim pragmatism on the subject of adoption and consanguinity in lineal descent in Muslim countries of Sunni rite. It has also shown the difficulties linked to the adoption of Muslim children from an international legal perspective and endeavours to compare Muslim law to French law on the subject of consanguinity in lineal descent. It concludes on a somewhat pessimistic note regarding the integration of Muslims in France in terms of French law and order

Moran, Linda Elizabeth. "Michelle Bachelet : the rise of the Supra-Madre from the Chilean body politic." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2018. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7947/.

Full text
Abstract:
Although the number of female leaders worldwide has yet to achieve par with that of male leaders, a growing number of female heads of state and female candidacies for that position signal that transformations are underway. Among them is Chile’s current president, Michelle Bachelet. Her first election generated significant debate since she possessed none of the qualities considered essential for eligibility. Attempts to lend logic to the contradictions imposed by that event are still largely inconclusive. This study investigates a deeper root system in Chilean history for causal factors with trajectories that lead into the twenty-first century. Under consideration are ways in which women attain political power, their management of power, and the role of the body politic in both of those. The latter part of the study establishes correlations between recent developments in the Chilean political landscape of female leadership and similar developments across the globe. During Bachelet’s first election, media coined the term—the “Bachelet Phenomenon”—to reference her unprecedented and improbable attainment of the presidency. This research consults a diverse body of resources to offer one interpretation of that. The findings contribute new perspectives to the existing body of literature that can be expanded by future research.

Abstract:
Esta dissertação é um estudo que propõe revelar a complexidade e os paradoxos da família nas obras de três autores contemporâneos, William Faulkner: The Sound and the Fury (1929), As I Lay Dying (1930) e Light in August (1932), Thomas Harris: Red Dragon (1981), The Silence of The Lambs (1988) e Hannibal Rising (2006) e Anne Rice: Interview with the Vampire (1976) e The Vampire Lestat (1985). This dissertation is a study that aims to reveal the complexity and the paradoxes of the family in the work of three contemporary authors, William Faulkner: The Sound and the Fury (1929), As I Lay Dying (1930) and Light in August (1932), Thomas Harris: Red Dragon (1981), The Silence of The Lambs (1988) and Hannibal Rising (2006) and Anne Rice: Interview with the Vampire (1976) and The Vampire Lestat (1985). This work will analise the way these authors reveal what conventionally should be kept away from the eyes of the public, from this derives the transgressive power of this literary form, stressed on these authors. Showing the familiar units, it will be essential to think about its lack of functionality, in the repressed past that “haunts” a present conditioned by the abject and the repulsive, that in a paradoxical way attracts the reader. Due to the timeless and universality of the topic, it will be established connexions between these works and other visual arts, such as painting and cinema.

Mohamed, Radwa. "The role of HAK/KUP/KT family of transporters and potassium channels in abiotic stress responses in Arabidopsis and rice." Thesis, University of York, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/20164/.

Full text
Abstract:
Abiotic stress is a worldwide problem that affects the productivity of crops. Salinity stress for example, affects about 950 million hectares of arable lands while about 64% of the global land is affected by water deficit (drought). Drought and salinity are the most deleterious stresses, resulting in nutritional imbalance. Therefore, the main mechanism of improving a plant tolerance to stresses is by improving nutritional acquisition such as K+ uptake. The Two Pore K+ vacuolar Channel (TPK1) was reported to function in K+ release from guard cell vacuoles, therefore stomatal closure. However, attpk1 showed weak phenotype, suggesting a good level of redundancy by other transporters predicted to localize in the guard cell tonoplast. The K+ high affinity uptake permeases HAK/KUP/KT transporters AtKUP12 and AtHAK8 are among these candidates. We test this hypothesis in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Loss of function of AtKUP12 mutants showed severe inhibition of germination, seedling establishment and growth of plants during K+ deficiency resulted from high NH4+/K+ ratio. Therefore, we suggest a potential role for this transporter in K+ flux during osmotic, salinity and K+ starvation stresses. We also suggest a possible epistasis relationship between AtKUP12 and AtTPK1. Possibly, they both function in K+ efflux from vacuoles to cytoplasm during stress. Our results also suggest no functional relationship between AtTPK1 and AtHAK8. AtKUP12 was able to rescue the growth of K+ deficient yeast strain during K+ starvation. In rice, we study the role of the Stelar K+ Outwardly Rectifying channel (SKOR) in K+ transport from roots to shoots under different stresses. We aim at improving K+ transport to shoots therefore the overall plant response to abiotic stress, using different overexpressor lines. Overexpressing the TPKb (an isoform of the TPK channel localized in the storage vacuoles) resulted in higher K+ levels in the transgenic plants during K+ starvation. We test the possibility of the involvement of other transporters in this phenomenon. Expression levels of the HAK1 and KAT1 as well as the GORK transporter and channel genes were measured in TPKb overexpressor lines. OsHAK1 showed slight increase in expression while other transporters did not show significant differences.

Abstract:
This study examines the way social media changes the way documentaries are developed, produced and distributed. I want investigate how web 2.0 technologies disrupt the documentary sector and the way producers navigate the social media ecology. Research exposed an industry in transformation. New roles, like the Producer for Marketing and Distribution (PMD), the Impact Producer (IP) and a participant-centric mode of documentary filmmaking are revealed. The way users connect via social media has changed the way people interact with each other at work. A balanced real- and virtual world network approach makes a strong and highly central network position for a documentary project possible. Emotional contagion and an authentic online presence create value for a films social media campaign. Both are crucial factors to the mobile multi-device audience expecting a credible social media experience. Research suggests that users accept the risks associated with the way their data is exploited by social networks as long as the user's social media experience is not diminished. The concept of the Global Digital Family is revealed when reappraising social media. I suggest further research into the problem of online authenticity. Kozinets' ideas on Gemeinschafts-type engagement (Kozinets, 2015) shed light on the phenomenon. But exactly when something is perceived as authentic online is still not entirely clear and should be investigated further. I also recommend that the PMD is formally accredited to encourage industry recognition.

Arenhart, Rafael Augusto. "Análise funcional dos genes ASR - Abscisic acid, Stress and Ripening - de arroz (Oryza sativa L.) em resposta ao estresse por alumínio." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/15471.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the major obstacles to maintain the stability of the national production of rice (Oryza sativa) lies on the susceptibility of the different genotypes to abiotic stress. In view of the social and economic importance of rice and due to the extremely harmful effects of stress in agriculture, detailed knowledge of the interactions between these stresses and plant responses to environmental stimuli is necessary. Aluminum (Al) is considered one of the main limitation factors for agricultural productivity, inhibiting root growth and mineral absorption. Al toxicity occurs by its solubilization in soils with low pH or acid soils. The ASR (ABA, Stress and Ripening) genes are induced by stress and abscisic acid (ABA) in plants, and their expression levels are quickly increased in response to salinity and drought. Recently, it was demonstrated that the ASR5 gene is responsive to Al in rice roots. Despite the fact that rice is considered one of the most resistant crops to Al, the basic mechanisms of tolerance to this metal are poorly known when compared to other crops. This study aimed the functional characterization of the gene expression of rice ASR family members in response to Al, and the construction of binary vectors for the subcellular localization of the protein codified by the OsASR5 gene, and the construction of a gene silencing binary vector for the ASR family. Analyses of transcripts by qRT-PCR showed that in the ssp Japonica, all ASR genes responded to Al. In contrast, OsASR5 do not suffer expression modulation in response to Al in rice roots of ssp Indica. These differences in response of the OsASR5 gene in distinct varieties may reflect differences in the degree of Al tolerance in each genotype.

Abstract:
The modern productive relations aim at updating, qualifications and competitiveness towards the competition imposed by the capitalism and the dynamic presented in the production and commercialization relations that, somehow, also influences the agricultural sector imposing new behaviors, patterns and dependencies. This work aims to analyze and discuss the organization of the rice culture in the city of Agudo, RS. In order to do that, the starting point is the conception of a networking area to understand how the integration between sections involved in the production, processing and trade process of rice happens, as well as in the previous steps related to the production process (financing, industry to agriculture, etc.) The methodology used in the development of this work was the collection of data through questionnaires, interviews, informal conversations, photos, statistics and census. Even though the family agriculture is maintained as productive basis, highly dependent of public politics, some sectors of this activity were specialized, maintaining strong relations with each other and assuring its importance in the local market. To make this possible, it was provided a great stimulus through financings and loans, empowering the bonds between growers and processing industries, which broadened their action market through investments in infra-structure and technology. The spatial relations have become more complex when transposing the territories through intersectorial flows.

This psycho-analytic study define the familial worship of famadihana, as a ritual, and lean on the two topographical conceptions of freud, connected with the cultural, social and ritual context, from important notions among merina conceptions : 1) the tombs organisations seems as the principle of exchange beetween the living and the dead; 2) hasindrazana as agalma from ancestral principle constitue the foundation of symbolic exchange; 3) tsiny or consciousness anxiety as communities authority to organize the worship. My construction begin with a tabula rasa of the previous interpretations of ritual, then build from ambivalence and psychical conflict released from ethnography and latents contents and sens of ritual, and since their divergent fate. From animist and projective actualization of ambivalential conflict, and at the divergent fates communicate respectively some typical censorships : repression and disavowal. The discovery of + historical truth ; of rite make progress by an analysis of context contents and their relationship into wich one the worship repete the myth (missing like such as). Hasindrazana is analysed from the ancient rite of fandroana and correspond to the native core of power, his appropriation process remind the myth, and the rites represent the process in situ, like a substitute of carrying cut of wish. The initial wish of ancestor to realize the rite, is a matter for animist omnipotent power : power of constrained on the living; the call of ancestors is the anxiety cry of the community; kabary is released as a representation of collective murder and apropriation of omnipotent power, in the same time that the brothers communitie give up to it, by guilt. The ritual action represente the hatred satisfayed and victory of love in analogy with mania/melancholy fluctuations, but in accordance with psychical process similar to obsessional neurosis. A connection is made beetween successive ritual actions who repete the supplanting murderess of omnipotent and the attempt of reconciliation with the omnipotent deposed and consacrated

The transition to college is usually the first time many late adolescents live apart from their parents for an extended period, making it an important developmental task (Kenny, 1987) that requires a variety of adaptational resources. Bowlby's (1969/1982, 1973, 1980) attachment theory has been refined by Kenny and Rice (1995) to explain how internal working models of late adolescents are the bases of the adaptational resources that determine the quality of adjustment to college. The Kenny and Rice model may be interpreted to suggest that external resources should include relationships with parents and friends, while internal resources can include self-concept. According to the authors, "these resources are assumed to moderate or buffer the effects of developmental challenges and stressful events on adjustment" (p.437). The purpose of the present study was to extend and further clarify the ways that quality attachment relationships and positive self-concept conjointly may promote healthy adaptation in the college milieu. In particular, the present study examined the influence of self-concept as a mediating variable with respect to attachment and healthy adjustment to college. Students from Freshman Psychology classes completed measures to assess their attachment relationships with each parent, their attachment relationships with peers, their level of self-concept, and their perceived adaptation to college. These measures were completed by students of traditional age (ages 18-20) within the first year of starting college. The results of the study indicate that: 1) a relationship exists between attachment and self-concept; 2) attachment is associated with college adjustment; 3) self-concept is related to college adjustment, and functions as a mediator variable between attachment and college adjustment; 4) there were no gender effects in the levels of mother or father attachment, and females reported higher levels of peer attachment; and 5) there were no gender effects in overall levels self-concept, but females reported higher levels of Moral Self-Concept.

Rice (Oryza sativa) stands out in Brazil for its economic and social importance, being an important source of protein and energy. Selecting lines of upland rice adapted to different environments is critical to the success of breeding programs targeted to family farmers in the state of Goiás, The objective of this work was to evaluate S0:2 families drawn from CNA9 population of the upland rice breeding program in greenhouse and in the field, aiming to select families for recombination and obtainment of a new selecting cycle. 50 families from CNA9 population from recurrent selection were used, in four experiments, with N, P, and inoculant combinations, in a randomized bloc design arrangement with two replicates in greenhouse. Traits evaluated were: plant height, chlorophyll content, canopy dry matter, roots dry matter and volume. The field experiment was arranged in a 14 X 14 square lattice, with 194 families, two controls, and three replicates. Traits evaluated were: plant height, flowering and yield, besides the following diseases: leaf and neck blast, scald, brown spot, grain spot, and narrow leaf spot. Results obtained from greenhouse indicate that families studied performed similarly in the absence of the inoculant, but responded differently for plant height, dry matter, and root volume, regarding nitrogen and phosphorus combinations. Field data showed that the families drawn from CNA9 population showed superior performance when compared to controls and to the original population, especially regarding neck blast and yield. It was possible to select 48 families from the field to recombine in the next breeding cycle.

Abstract:
This thesis intends, after setting chronological and geographical bounds to its corpus, to give a definition of comedy, as an expression of carnivalesque release, in the broadest meaning of the phrase, as well as of public morals. The existence of a comic pharmakos. Expelled or punished before the fertility rites are accomplished, initiates a pattern from which few subcategories actually differ. The first part, in a historical approach, demonstrates both the permanence and evolution of the male and female disguise, first a transgression of religious rules then a mere plotting device. The transferring of some schemes from Italy to France, Spain or England, allows one to examine the differences in aesthetic treatments (burlesque or romantic situations) and also the degrees of freedom permitted in the various countries or the sublimation by the dramatists themselves. The second part deals more precisely with the struggles inside the family circle: competition between father and son, conjugal strife’s - and their assessment on the grounds of rather dim morals where the idea of nature seems predominant over the rules of either churches or states. It studies rough music as a burlesque means of punishment. The third part demonstrates the desire for reconciliation in and by the means of comedy: the wedding, its specific catastrophe, may be inverted into false nuptials or ludicrous divorce. Traditional festivals, May Day, midsummer, also point to the survival of fertility rites

Abstract:
Chaumont family, "bourgeois" from Namur won only depreciated bills of exchange by suppliing French armies during the wae of the Spanish succession in Flanders. They emigrated to Paris, around 1719 and speculated successfully during the 'Mississipi Bubble" to build a real estate fortune in France and buy offices in the senior royal administration. They also built a network of matrimonial alliances with rich, new ennobled families. The eldest son was related by marriage with Philibert Orry, future minister of State. He was appointed chancelor of king Stanislas, Duke of Lorraine and Bar. He stayed at this responsability for twenty-nine years and ruled the duchies for the sake of the French kingdom. The whole family benefited from the lasting appointment to obtain offices and prebends from Lorraine in the Church or the Army or the Administration. The third generation was installed in the high society, close to the royal power. Two branches still continued the family line as royal provincial intendant or director of the Roads Department or bishop. The French revolution disrupted the family's rise. THe prominent, close the king functions were definitively weakened. We highlighted the means used by the Chaumont family to realize their fortune and a very kick social rise over three generations; how this family was only one example among others but also why it was a particular case

The objective of this study was to evaluate 2 classification criteria used in the prioritization of dental caries treatment in the Family Health Program. The research took place in the city of Ipiguá SP and included 538 five to twelve year-old children registered in public schools and attended by the local Family Health Unit. An oral examination and the fulfilling of the two classification criteria were done for the same children in order to evaluate the priorities in curative odontological care resulting from each of the criterion. Among the 538 children who were examined there were 313 (58,3%) in need of curative treatment. Based on the activity of the caries, it was possible to verify that 236 children (75,4%) were considered first priority in odontological care, while the criterion based on the amount and the size of the cavity included 73 children (23,4%). According to the criteria, 186 children (59,4%%) did not fit into the same priority of curative treatment for caries. The criteria for classification of caries used in the registration of the oral health conditions are very different in determining the priority of curative odontological treatment. Therefore, more studies related to the subject should allow creating a pattern for registration of the oral health conditions of children who use the Family Health Program.

In plants, ascorbate peroxidase is a key antioxidative enzyme which catalyze the conversion of H2O2 to H2O. In rice, APx gene family is composed of eight genes, including two cytosolic isofoms, two putative peroxisomal isoforms, and four chloroplastic isoforms, and yet their gene expression patterns response to external stimuli remain mostly uncharacterized. To comprehensively understand the specific gene expression patterns of each individual of the APx gene, quantitative real-time PCR was conducted. Our results showed that most transcripts of APx genes are highly accumulated in the shoot tissue. The heavy metal response of APx indicated that more than 10 folds of APx1 and APx3 transcripts were induced by copper in root. Furthermore, almost all APx gene were significantly enhanced by dehydration, salt, and ABA either in root or shoot. Phytohormones treatments revealed that salicyclic acid notably increased the expression of all APx genes, except APx7, in root. Subcellular localization analysis demonstrated that both cytosolic isoform OsAPx1 and OsAPx2 are localized at cytosol and nucleus. Our previous study showed that OsAPx8 is highly induced by salt stress in root. To further understand its roles in salt stress, PAPx8::GUS transgenic rice was generated. PAPx8::GUS transgenic plants showed that GUS accumulated in blade, sheath, stem, lemma, palea, endosperm and embryo. Wounding and salt stress enhanced the accumulation of GUS protein in leaf. Analysis of APx8 knockout mutant, osapx8, showed that APx activity decreased 40% in leaf, while lower inducibility could be observed upon salt treatment. Salt tolerant assay indicated that osapx8 showed a salt sensitive phenotype. All these data let us conclude that OsAPx8 is a crucial gene in protecting rice from salt stress.

Abstract We cloned and characterized 11 TUBBY-like cDNAs from Oryza sativa, named OsTLP1-11. The cDNAs encode deduced proteins of 137 - 449 amino acids. The amino acids sequences of OsTLPs share 19.9% - 84.5% identity. All the family members contain the conserved “tubby domain” at C-terminal, and they share 15.4% - 88.8% identity. Unlike the highly divers N-terminal region of animal TUBBY-like proteins, OsTLPs contain a conserved F-box domain (except OsTLP4 & OsTLP6) at N-terminal. The F-box domains contain 54-55 amino acids with 2 highly conserved submotifs. The OsTLP genes are separatively located on chromosome 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11 and 12. Phylogenetic relationship analysis demonstrates that the full length amino acid sequences and tubby domains of OsTLPs are closely related to TLPs from other multicellular organisms. All the TULP homologs can be divided into six groups. Real-time PCR analysis showed that OsTLP1, OsTLP5, OsTLP10 are the major transcripts in different organs and different development stages. OsTLP1 and OsTLP5 mRNA were highly expressed at 3 leaves stage. OsTLP10 transcript is major at embryo stage. The other OsTLPs transcripts were only detected at a very low level. Based on promoter analysis from GenomeNet revealed that the promoter regions of OsTLPs gene have several functional nucleotide motifs of plant specially, included maize activator P (flavonoid biosynthetic genes), PBF (MPBF), GAmyb (GA-regulated myb gene), SBF-1 and RAV1 (with AP2 domain).

Based on our previous studies, Arabidopsis AtTLPs may play important roles in ABA signaling and ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis (Lai, et al., 2004). However, the functions of Tubby-like proteins in plants have not been fully understood. Rice is one of the most important staple crops in the world. Of the eleven OsTLP (Oryza sativa Tubby-like protein) genes in rice, most have a conserved Tubby domain and F-box domain in their C- and N-termini, respectively. Bioinformatic prediction reveals several possible physiological functions of OsTLPs. Further the prediction by RT-PCR analysis showed that the expressions of OsTLP1, 7, and 11 were upregulated under multiple biotic and abiotic stresses, including abscisic acid (ABA), methyl jasmoic acid (MeJA), salicylic acid (SA), and salt, especially in the roots. During seed development and germination, the expression of OsTLP1, 7, and 11 were upregulated in seed desiccation and downregulated in imbibition, as well as LEA (late embryogenesis abundant proteins). The data all suggests that OsTLPs may play important roles in stress response in rice. In addition, according to the transient assay in rice callus by bombardment, the leader intron of OsTLP7 promoter may function as a transcriptional or translational enhancer to enhance the GUS activity by 8-10 fold. It may be valuable to study whether the intron also enhances other heterogenous promoters to a higher expression level.

Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) is a key antioxidative enzyme which catalyzes the conversion of H2O2 to H2O and O2 in plants. In rice, APX gene family is composed of eight genes, including two in the cytoplasm (OsAPX1and OsAPX2), two in the peroxisome (OsAPX3 and OsAPX4), and four in the chloroplast (OsAPX5, OsAPX6, OsAPX7 and OsAPX8), and yet their gene regulation and functions remain mostly uncharacterized. In order to understand their responses to environmental stresses, quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) was conducted. The results showed that most OsAPX genes were induced by NaCl, dehydration, heavy metal, and plant hormones. Analysis of the gene expression patterns of the OsAPX genes at different developmental stages indicated that OsAPX2, OsAPX3, and OsAPX8 accumulated abundant transcripts in leaf tissues at the vegetative stage. In contrast, transcripts of OsAPX1, OsAPX4, OsAPX5, OsAPX6, and OsAPX7 highly increased at the reproductive stage. In silico prediction of the 2-kb promoter region upstream of OsAPX translational start codon revealed that lots of cis-elements are related to plant hormones and abiotic stress. In order to characterize the OsAPX promoters, transcriptional start sites (TSS) of OsAPX genes were identified. In addition, 1.0 to 1.5 kb promoter region was isolated to drive GUS expression, and PAPXs/GUS transgenic rice were generated. Histochemical analysis of PAPXs/GUS plants was conducted. High activity levels of OsAPX1, OsAPX4, OsAPX5, OsAPX7, and OsAPX8 promoters were observed in root and shoot tissue of rice seedlings, and the GUS expression driven by OsAPX2, OsAPX3 and OsAPX8 promoters was accumulated mainly in the shoot tissue of rice seedlings. Most of the PAPXs/GUS plants showed GUS activity in leaf sheath, stem, and blade, but GUS activity was not found in stem tissues of both PAPX2/GUS and PAPX6/GUS plants. Strong GUS expression driven by OsAPX1, OsAPX4, OsAPX5, OsAPX7, and OsAPX8 promoters was observed in the glumes of spikelet; meanwhile, OsAPX2, OSAPX3, and OsAPX6 promoters drove GUS expression mainly in anthers. Promoter activity in mature seeds was observed in OsAPX1, OsAPX3, OsAPX4, OsAPX5, OsAPX7, and OsAPX8 genes. In summary, the diverse expression patterns of OsAPX genes indicate that OsAPX genes are induced by different environmental stresses and developmentally regulated. The analysis of PAPXs/GUS transgenic plants further indicates that OsAPX genes have tissue- and stage- specificity. This study provides basic knowledge of the regulatory OsAPX promoters, which may contribute to further functional analysis of OsAPX genes.

Rice, one of the staple crops in the world, is cultivated widely in Asia. Oryza, a genus of the Poaceae, consists of three sections and 24 species. Since last century, the industrial pollution has been seriously contaminating environments. Among various pollutants, heavy metals in the soil influences the crop growth to a great extent. Of them, cadmium is toxic to most animals and flowering plants. To vascular plants, cadmium is a nonessential metal; only species or populations that are tolerant to cadmium can survive in the wild. Phytochelatin (PC) proteins, which are synthesized from glutathione via a transpeptidation reaction mediated by the phytochelatin synthase (PCS), enable plants to tolerate heavy-metal ions. This study focuses on molecular evolution and selection effects of the PCS gene family in Oryza. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that monocots, dicots, and pteridophytes each formed a monophyletic group. Reciprocal monophyly of PCS1 and PCS2 paralogs in the Oryza was supported. As directional selection as an evolutionary force shaping the PCS1 gene was detected in other species, PCS1 gene mediated by maintaining the ancestreal lineages in cultivated rice, resulting positive Tajima’s D values. In contrast, PCS2 genes evolved under a negative selection in the genus. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) decayed slowly. Compared to the PCS2 gene, a lower level of LD in PCS1 gene was detected. The possible explanations are that the balancing selection and high-frequency recombination events of PCS1 have led to such lower LD.

Pollen tube elongation in pistil is a crucial step in the sexual reproduction of plants. In a compatible pollination, pollen germinates to extrude a tube that penetrates the stigma and grows extracellularly through the stylar tissues to ovules. It is known that pollen germination and tube growth are significantly regulated by the transport of inorganic ions, such as Ca2+ and K+, across the plasma membranes of pollen and/or pollen tubes. Calcium dependent protein kinase (CDPK) is one kind of the calcium receptors prevalent in plant kingdom, therefore which may play critical roles in multiple aspects of pollen function. The expressions of CDPKs are finely tuned in different tissues and in response to specific signals. Twenty-nine CDPK genes have been identified in the rice genome through a complete search of genome and full-length cDNA databases. To clarify how many CDPK genes participate in control of pollen tube growth, RT-PCR was performed in this study to detect the expression patterns of the 29 CDPK genes. Eight CDPKs (OsCPK2, OsCPK14, OsCPK21, OsCPK22, OsCPK25/26, OsCPK28 and OsCPK29) are expressed predominantly (or specifically) in the mature pollen. Using transient overexpression of CDPK/CFP fusion proteins in the mature pollen of lily, four of them (OsCPK2, OsCPK21, OsCPK26 and OsCPK29) showed inhibition of pollen tube elongation in a concentration-dependent manner. However, no clear functional differences were observed in the putative two clades of 8 CDPKs that expressed in the mature pollen.

The subjective voice of vicarious exposure to trauma and crime narratives by law students, is poorly researched. This phenomenological study sought both positive and negative interpretations from five undergraduate law students using semi-structured interviews. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) data revealed one superordinate theme: Vicarious Rite of passage: Family trauma, systemic patriarchy and caring for self; highlighting juxtaposed layers of complex traumatic distress and psychological growth for these participants. The vulnerability of community members due to systemic disadvantage and limitations of the legal system, facilitated a sense of purpose providing legal support. However, participants were faced with redefining their self-care, personal values and finding a balance between personal and professional selves. Ultimately, poor supervision and no protective training from trauma exposure, risked the future wellbeing of these law students venturing into their careers. Intuitively and protectively some sought career paths that minimised cumulative exposure to trauma. Psychoeducational training at the institutional level for law students is recommended for longevity of mental health and career.

The regulation of alpha-amylase gene expression by gibberellins during germination of cereal grain has been used as a model system for studying the mechanism of hormonal regulation of gene expression in plants. Previously our lab have cloned and partially sequenced four rice alpha-amylase cDNA clones, sequence of one of the cDNA clone (aAmy10) has not yet been reported. The length of aAmy10 is 1471 bp, however, it is not a full length cDNA clone. By comparison with another rice alpha-amylase gene RAmy1A, aAmy10 probably miss 6 nucleotides which encoding two amino acids at the 5 ' end. aAmy10 encodes a polypeptide of 426 amino acids with predicted molecular weight of 47.6 kDa and pI value of 4.83. The homology of amino acid sequence between aAmy10 and RAmy1A is approximately 96%. In embryo, the accumulation of aAmy10 transcripts first appeared at day 2 after germination and reached its maximal level at day 6. The expression pattern of aAmy10 in aleurone layer was similar as that in embryo. It suggests that the gene product of aAmy10 is probably involved in starch degradation during rice seed germination. Expression of the alpha-amylase gene family in cultured cells starved of sucrose and during seed germination was studied using eight rice alpha -amylase gene specific probes. In cells grown with sucrose, only the transcript of RAmy3E was detectable. After cells had been starved of sucrose, transcripts of all alpha-amylase genes became detectable. The expression level was highest for RAmy3D and second for RAmy3E, which account for almost 90% of total alpha -amylase transcripts in the starved cells. In embryos of dry seeds, only low levels of RAmy1A and RAmy3E transcripts were detectable. Five days after seed germination, the transcripts of RAmy1A, RAmy1B, RAmy1C, RAmy3B and RAmy3E also accumulated in embryos. In aleurone layers, the transcripts of all alpha-amylase genes except RAmy3D increased with time for the first 5 days. Transcripts of RAmy1A, RAmy1C, RAmy3B and RAmy3E account for almost 95% of total alpha-amylase transcripts in aleurone layers during germination. No alpha-amylase transcript was detected in young shoot and roots 5 days after germination. Our results suggest that in cells grown with sucrose, enzymes of RAmy3E is probably the major alpha-amylase for starch degradation. In cells starved of sucrose, enzymes of RAmy3D and RAmy3E become the two major alpha-amylases for starch degradation. The gene products of RAmy1A, RAmy1C, RAmy3B and RAmy3E are the major enzymes for starch degradation during later stages of seed germination. Our studies clearly demonstrate that different members of the alpha -amylase gene family are differentially regulated in different tissues as well as under different growth condition, which provides a new insight into the physiological functions of these alpha-amylase isozymes in rice.

Abstract:
Juan Fermin de Aycinena became the wealthiest, the most prominent, and probably the most powerful individual in late colonial Central America. A mid-eighteenth century immigrant from Navarre (via New Spain), Aycinena adroitly manipulated Spanish colonial institutions (family, state and church) in amassing unrivalled wealth, status, and power. To be sure, Aycinena displayed remarkable business acumen. But he also had the great fortune to arrive in Central America at the time of its greatest economic expansion, based largely on indigo. Numerous entrepreneurs took advantage of the opportunities presented by the dramatic economic growth, but Aycinena's success dwarfed all others. Staked to great wealth through his first marriage, he became the region's leading exporter, importer, and lender. At the same time, he became an important buttress of Spanish power in Central America. Aycinena contributed to commercial expansion, isthmian defense, and the church. A decisive moment in his ascent came in the aftermath of the 1773 destruction of Santiago de Guatemala, capital of colonial Central America. The physical transfer and construction of a new Central American capital was largely his responsibility. For his numerous services to the Spanish Crown, Aycinena received a Castilian title, the only title in late colonial Central America. The acquisition of the title in itself illustrates an important phenomenon, the dual operation of prestige and profit motives. A further indication of such combined motives was his establishment, in the year of his death, of an entailed estate. Aycinena was able to place his family in such a position that it would continue to dominate Central America politics, commerce, and society for much of the nineteenth century, and in some ways, even to the present. Although Aycinena was the Kingdom of Guatemala's most successful businessman, and thus an exceptional one, his career nevertheless tells us much about business, politics, and society in Bourbon Central America

GDSL esterases/lipases are a newly discovered subclass of lipolytic enzymes that are very important and attractive research subjects because of their multifunctional properties, such as broad substrate specificity and regiospecificity. Compared to the current knowledge regarding these enzymes in bacteria, our understanding of the plant GDSL enzymes is very limited, although the GDSL gene family in plant species includes numerous members in many fully sequenced plant genomes. Only two genes from a large rice GDSL esterase/lipase gene family were previously characterised, and the majority of the members remain unknown. In the present study, we describe the rice OsGELP (Oryza sativa GDSL esterase/lipase protein) gene family at the genomic and proteomic levels, and use this knowledge to provide insights into the multifunctionality of the rice OsGELP enzymes. In this study, an extensive bioinformatics analysis identified 114 genes in the rice OsGELP gene family. A complete overview of this family in rice is presented, including the chromosome locations, gene structures, phylogeny, and protein motifs. Among the OsGELPs and the plant GDSL esterase/lipase proteins of known functions, 41 motifs were found that represent the core secondary structure elements or appear specifically in different phylogenetic subclades. The specification and distribution of identified putative conserved clade-common and -specific peptide motifs, and their location on the predicted protein three dimensional structure may possibly signify their functional roles. Potentially important regions for substrate specificity are highlighted, in accordance with protein three-dimensional model and location of the phylogenetic specific conserved motifs. The phylogenetic analysis, together with protein motif architectures, and the expression profiling were analysed to predict the possible biological functions of the rice OsGELP genes. Presented genomic analysis introduces fundamental information on the organization of the rice OsGELP gene family. With combination of the genomic, phylogenetic, microarray expression, protein motif distribution, and protein structure analyses, supported basis for the functional prediction of many members in the rice GDSL esterase/lipase family were created. The present study provides a platform for the selection of candidate genes for further detailed functional study.

The cytosolic class I small heat shock proteins (sHSP-CI) represent the most abundant sHSP in plants. Here, we report the characterization and the expression profile of 9 members of the sHSP-CI gene family in rice (Oryza sativa Tainung No.67), of which Oshsp16.9A, Oshsp16.9B, Oshsp16.9C, Oshsp16.9D and Oshsp17.9B are clustered on chromosome 1, and Oshsp17.3, Oshsp17.7, Oshsp17.9A and Oshsp18.0 are clustered on chromosome 3. The rice sHSP-CI genes share high homology in the coding regions (>60%) and low homology in the 3’-UTRs (<40%). According to the amino acid variation of the ?helix 2 (?) sHSP-CIs, we propose that monocot sHSP-CIs can be divided into subclass A and subclass B. Individual gene products were identified from the protein subunit components of a heat shock complex (HSC) and from in vitro transcription/translation products by two-dimensional gel electrophoreses (2-DE). All sHSP-CI genes except Oshsp17.9B were induced strongly after a 2-hour heat shock treatment. The genes on chromosome 3 were induced rapidly at 32oC and 41oC, whereas those on chromosome 1 were induced slowly by similar conditions. Seven of these nine genes, except Oshsp16.9D and Oshsp17.9B, were induced by arsenite (As), but only genes on chromosome 3 were strongly induced by azetidine-2-carboxylic acid (Aze, a proline analog), canavanine (Can, an arginine analog) and cadmium (Cd). A similar expression profile of all sHSP-CI genes at a lower level was evoked by treatments with ethanol, NaCl, H2O2 and CuCl2. Only Oshsp16.9A abundantly accumulated in mature dry seed suggests an additionally prominent role played by this HSP in development. Transient expression assays of the promoter activity by linking to GUS reporter gene also supported the in vivo selective expression of the sHSP-CI genes by Aze treatment indicating the differential induction of rice sHSP-CI genes is most likely regulated at the transcriptional level. It also demonstrates that Oshsp17.3 and Oshsp18.0 share a 356-bp bidirectional promoter. By deletion and truncation analysis of the Oshsp17.3 promoter, a possible Aze-responsive element (AZRE, GTCCTGGACG) located between -186 to -176 relative to the transcription start site was found to be capable of directing expression in response to Aze treatment. Towards identifying cellular kinases that may regulate sHSP-CIs induction, I also found that treatments with Aze as well as Cd enhanced OsMAPK2 transcripts. Based on these results, the induction of sHSP-CIs mRNAs by Aze and Cd may arise through a pathway different from HS response in plants. Finally, I propose a model of signal transduction pathways for linking HS response and chemical inducers such as Aze or Cd.
