Abstract:
Labor rights are the first to come up for criticism when accounts of human rights are offered in response to philosophical questions about them, and notoriously so Article 24, which talks about `rest and leisure' and `period holidays with pay.' This study first tries to make it plausible why labor rights would appear on the Universal Declaration, and next articulates some philosophical objections to their presence there. The interesting question then is not so much how one could respond to the objections, but to explore what commitments one needs to make to answer our question in a satisfactory manner. To make progress, we can contrast the idea of human rights with conceptions of them. Such conceptions offer answers to a set of philosophical questions about human rights. It would be rather unlikely for any such conception to emerge as the uniquely best philosophical account of human rights since disagreements among different conceptions (each of which requires commitments to a range of issues) are complex. What is sensible to ask then is what a conception of human rights would have to be like to count labor rights as human rights, and whether there is a conception of that sort. I offer one conception that I take to be plausible overall, and that does count labor rights as human rights. Or, that is: it does count a right to work as a human right, alas not in the strong interpretation according to which states must create jobs but in the weaker sense that states need to make sure people are not systematically excluded from employment, and are treated in certain ways at their place of work, and it does count a right to leisure as a human right, alas not a right to paid vacations.

Abstract:
The rights that govern a person's workplace relationship, worker rights, are an important part of everyday lifefor many people on earth. As these rights are violated, the safety of the workers livelihood is threatened and as such the lack of security undermines the social contract in society. The social contract approach to corruption, as championed by Bo Rothstein, holds that as the social contract is rejected, corruption ensues. This study examines the relationship between worker rights violations and corruption using OLS regressionwith a range of control variables. The essay finds that there is a relationship between the degree of worker right violations and corruption, but only in higher welfare countries. In the studied countries with the lowest welfare, the relationship does not manifest itself. The essay also finds that in comparison to other factors of rule of law worker right violations is perhaps not the most important one when finding determinants of corruption.

Gradwohl, Csilla. "The right to live in the community as the right to have rights." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Teologiska institutionen, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-322826.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis explores Article 19 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which recognizes the right of all persons with disabilities to live in the community, with choices equal to others. The relationship between Article 19 and the other articles of the Convention are explored, in order to discuss the role of Article 19 in the Convention. The thesis examines whether the right to live in the community, set out in Article 19, can be considered as the most central right of the Convention. The thesis applies the legal analytical method, and it is based on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; the communications of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; official reports of the United Nations as well as international non-governmental organizations; and scientific articles from books and journals. By using Arendt’s idea of “the right to have rights” as a theory, this thesis argues that the right to live in the community, contained in Article 19, constitutes the right to have rights for persons with disabilities and therefore it can be considered as the most central right of the Convention.

Diekmann, Maya. "The rights of the Right : How European far-right populist parties instrumentalise human rights rhetoric to mobilise supporters." Thesis, Malmö universitet, Malmö högskola, Institutionen för globala politiska studier (GPS), 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-42933.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a puzzling occurrence in Western Europe: Some far-right populist parties, traditionally seen as antithetical to liberalism, are appropriating liberal rights for their own illiberal ends. On the premise that the parties instrumentalise liberal elements to achieve more legitimacy in a climate of tolerance and respect for human rights in Western Europe, this thesis examines how far-right populist parties use human rights for mobilising purposes. Using Clifford Bob’s four conceptual elements of mobilising human rights rhetoric, in a qualitative content analysis the language of three Western European far-right populist parties is analysed. It is argued that, by drawing from a liberalism of fear, far-right populists frame human rights as a Western achievement, under threat by immigration from Islamic countries and the “corrupt elite” that allows for immigration to continue. By doing so, populists manage to incorporate human rights rhetoric in their mobilisation efforts, without challenging human rights per se.

Åström, Aneq Meriam. "Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy : Is it right?" Doctoral thesis, Linköpings universitet, Klinisk fysiologi, 2011. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-70403.

Full text
Abstract:
Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is an inherited heart disease, where sudden cardiac death in young seemingly healthy persons may be the first symptom. There is a need for more sensitive and accurate diagnostic methods to detect signs of disease, at an early stage and in relatives of affected individuals. The aim of this thesis is the evaluation of new non-invasive modalities in assessment of right ventricular (RV) volume and function with focus on patients with ARVC. Clinical and non-invasive follow-up of fifteen patients with ARVC during a mean period of 8 years permitted the evaluation of disease progression. RV volume analysis by magnetic resonance imaging relies on short axis (SA) views. A new axially rotated modality acquisition was tested and its feasibility in assessment of RV volume was evaluated. This acquisition seems to be able to improve the assessment of RV volume and function by reducing the uncertainty in defining the basal slice of the RV. A third study concentrated on analysis of RV regional and general function by echocardiography, using tissue Doppler imaging as well as two dimensional (2D) longitudinal strain based on speckle tracking in patients with ARVC, their first degree relatives and in healthy subjects. 2D strain showed a good feasibility in analysis of the RV function in relatives and controls but less in ARVC patients probably due to the progressive myocardial cell death with fibro-fatty replacement of the RV wall. In order to detect and follow up echocardiographic changes an index was developed combining dimensional and functional parameters for the left and for the right ventricle. Advances in the molecular genetics of ARVC have provided new insights into the understanding of the disease. Hitherto, 9 candidate genes have been identified. A new mutation in the plakophilin 2 gene was detected in a three generation family. The clinical phenotype related to this mutation was investigated. The studies have evaluated and developed methods for studying the right ventricle with special emphasis on ARVC. With the ultimate goal of preventing sudden death in ARVC, a combination of genetic testing and improved diagnostic methods may create an improved algorithm for risk stratification and selection to prophylactic treatment.

Abstract:
In Gideon v. Wainwright, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the government must provide a criminal defense lawyer for any accused person who cannot afford one. But for too many people, Gideon's promise remains unfulfilled. In Texas, there are no statewide guidelines about who is entitled to a court-appointed lawyer. Instead, counties create their own rules that create serious gaps in constitutional protection. Getting Gideon Right investigates the financial standards that determine an accused person's eligibility for appointed counsel in Texas county courts. The report reveals a patchwork of county court policies that are both complex and severe.
