Full textIn this research a simulation model developed for the analysis of the combustion processes in a rotary kiln incinerator operating on healthcare waste has been carried out. The model has been developed as a support tool in the design phase of incinerator combustion chambers and, at the same time, to identify possible technical changes in existing plants to the aim of optimizing both the combustion process and the thermal energy recovery. The model takes into account mass and thermal balances for the waste stream combustion process with specific kinetic parameters for the oxidation of the specific waste stream and has been validated with respect to experimental data measured on a real incineration plant located in Rome (Italy). Simulation results have shown a good agreement with experimentally measured data. In particular simulated internal and external temperature profiles have shown a very good agreement with the measured ones. A sensitivity analysis of the combustion system to different operating conditions has then been performed analysing the influence of different operating variable (input mass flow rates, excess air ratios) as well as design properties (refractory and insulator characteristics) on the furnace behaviour. These analyses confirmed the possibility of using this model in order to get information about the combustion processes and at the same time to plan future changes in the operative or geometric conditions of the combustion chamber.

Full textNowadays, the qualitative and quantitative assessment of environmental impacts produced by every human activity is a topical field of research. As a matter of fact, all over the world there is an increasing attention about the environmental issues and influences exerted by productive and management sectors. In particular, the management of waste is a crucial sector involving important aspects of our life as well as it produces several environmental impacts that have to be adequately monitored and managed in a sustainable development perspective. In the first part, this study was focused on the evaluation of the positive and negative impacts caused on different environmental components by several municipal solid waste management systems defined at provincial scale. This assessment was performed by means of two different Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) procedures called WISARD and SimaPro, respectively. The LCA procedures were able to calculate the consequences produced by the whole system as well as by each phase. While, in the second part, the study was focused on the collection and transport of materials to determine environmental and economic effects for ten municipalities from 1000 to 10,000 inhabitants. The performed analysis taken into account a kerbside collection system of all recyclables, glass excepted, with a percentage of separate collection varying in the range of 35% – 80% and transport to composting of putrescibles, RDF pressed balls production and incineration, final landfilling. There are other two scenarios, for 80% separate collection, that consider different alternatives of treatment for residues as dry residue sorting and final landfilling or direct disposal in landfill. The obtained results pointed out that the increasing of the percentage separated collection involves an environmental performances’ improvement of management system and an environmental benefits’ increase. For high percentage of waste separated collection incineration doesn’t weighed upon impact’s results respectful to dry residue sorting. The results are similar for both Life Cycle Assessment procedures in qualitative terms. xviii With regard phase of collection and transport for communities results show how impacts rise such as community’s size; opposite management costs in term of Euro/inhabitant/year increase for the little communities but don’t depend by the number of inhabitants for the communities with a population major of 5000 inhabitants. The multi-criteria analysis was developed giving the same importance to both economic and environmental variables. The principal result obtained was that the municipalities up to 4000 inhabitants must get together to optimize both environmental and management costs. [edited by author]

Full textThe deepened analysis of both European and Italian norms represented the starting point to evaluate the current implementation of legislation in Italy, with a particular focus on Ancona Province. This approach allowed the assessment of the current performance of MW collection and recycling system, highlighting the main criticalities connected to the biodegradable residue in the undifferentiated waste, intended for the disposal. A doubt emerged about the obligation of a treatment of undifferentiated waste, before the disposal in landfilling sites. Therefore, a real scale analysis was carried out selecting the Corinaldo landfilling site (which collects the MW of Ancona Province) as case study. The possibility of the real scale study represents a strength of the present research, compared to the available scientific literature, often referred to lab scale. The analysis evaluated the effect of the mechanical biological treatment (MBT) on MW, sent to Corinaldo facility. With this aim, the characteristics of disposal in two reference periods (before and after the MBT facility starting) were studied. The results did not identify significant improvements after the implementation of the MBT, considering the high efficiency of collection and recycling system in Ancona. The further environmental and economic assessments suggest that the best strategy of MW management should invest on recycling system, rather than the WM stabilization, in agreement with the circular economy principles. Starting from these observations, the manuscript presents a critical study of the technical criteria of the Italian norms suggesting a more deepened evaluation of parameters to assess the cases in which the MBT (before the disposal) produces real benefits on MW management. These evaluations should be able to balance the benefit with the MBT facility impact, both in environmental and economic terms, in the scenarios characterized by a virtuous recycling system.
