Weideman, Suzette. "Physically disabled adolescents' experience of therapeutic riding : a phenomenological investigation / by Suzette Weideman." Thesis, North-West University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/9.

Abstract:
This dissertation serves as a report of a qualitative exploration of the experience of adolescents with physical disabilities during therapeutic horse-riding. The aim of the study is to understand the impact of therapeutic riding on the lived world of the participants in this unique form of animal assisted therapy. In order to achieve the set goals, phenomenological psychological research is utilised. The perspective of the participants was explored through unstructured, in-depth interviews, which afforded the current researcher the opportunity to obtain rich descriptions of therapeutic riding as experienced by adolescents with physical disabilities. Seven adolescents with a variety of physical disabilities, mostly affecting motor functioning, were selected to participate. Team analysis provided bias-control and inter-rater reliability ensured that no corruption of data occurred. The verbatim transcriptions of the audio-taped data were reviewed and the original narratives consulted to illustrate themes and provide proof for the interpretations. An investigation of animal assisted therapy provided a theoretical basis for the study. The development of this form of intervention, research in the field, the different applications and the animals utilised were explored. Specific focus was placed on equine facilitated therapy, including therapeutic riding, hippotherapy and equine assisted psychotherapy. Investigations of theoretical perspectives on adolescence as a life phase as well as physical disability as a phenomena, afforded an in-depth look at the expected development of adolescents and the developmental concerns of adolescents with physical disabilities. It also provided the current researcher with valuable insight into the concerns of people with physical disabilities, especially within the South African context. Thematic conclusions illustrated that adolescents who participated in the current study experienced therapeutic riding as an enjoyable opportunity to escape daily routine and experience positive emotions. Although some of them experienced difficulties pertaining to the horses and other factors, including the limitations placed on them by their physical disabilities, they had an overall positive therapeutic experience. Therapeutic riding offered them an opportunity to feel free, relaxed and energised and afforded them the prospect to escape from the confines set by their disabilities, while they were exercising and improving their physical deficits. It can be deduced from their reports that the social component incorporated in the horse riding elicited positive emotions, because they were spending quality time with friends and family and belonged to a group that shared their experience. In this environment, perceived as socially safe, they were exposed to different social situations that gave them the chance to learn and apply new interpersonal skills. The nature of therapeutic riding educed initial fear in all of the participants, but by overcoming those fears and other challenges they were able to improve their skills and achieve personal growth. The therapeutic riding offered a motivational component that encouraged them, not only to improve their performance, but also to attain therapeutic and personal goals. By achieving goals that had seemed unattainable in the past, they experienced a sense of accomplishment and mastery and sensed improvement in their confidence levels and ultimately, also their self-esteem. An important component of their experience included the bond that was formed with the animal in the therapy-team. The different experiences of the adolescents illuminated various aspects of the nature of their relationships with the horses that included perceptions of the horse as being reliable, capable of unconditional acceptance, deserving of friendship and love, and able to show trust and understanding. This bond awarded them a sense of attachment that was strengthened through touch. Theoretical deductions that could be made by correlating the thematic conclusions with well established theory indicated that therapeutic riding could improve psychological well-being and facilitate self actualisation.

Abstract:
The benefits of horse riding for people with disabilities have been recognised for centuries, however, there has been very little research that explores the significance and meaning of Riding for the Disabled (RDA) for riders and there are no studies of parents of riders. This thesis is based upon ethnography and interviews with riders and riders' parents at a Riding for the Disabled Centre in Sydney, Australia. It explores the perceptions and experiences of riders and also analyses the role of parents in influencing their child's experience of the RDA. It examines parents' experiences of the RDA and the impact that it has had on them and their family. This thesis is premised on three research questions. The three questions are; 'how do riders perceive and experience the RDA and how and why do these perceptions differ?', 'how do parents perceive the RDA and its impact on their child with an impairment' and 'how do parents perceive the RDA's impact on their family and themselves?' The study draws on a feminist framework and utilises the work of feminist theorists working in Disability Studies to 'broaden' the social model of disability. This framework facilitates the exploration of personal experiences of riding as it privileges the voice of the participants and also acknowledges the diversity of RDA experiences that exist amongst them. It also allows room for the physical, bodily experience of riding to be investigated. Furthermore, this research responds to Shakespeare's (2006) call for further research on the 'social relations of disability' - it investigates the relationships between volunteers who do not have an impairment, and the riders who have an impairment. The central argument that emerges is that Riding for the Disabled is a unique individual experience that holds varied meanings for riders. For some Riding for the Disabled is a central feature of their lives and has altered their world. For others, it is one activity among many and its impact is limited. The type of impairment an individual rider had was often a key determinant of how they experienced the RDA. For parents of riders the RDA exposes them to parents with similar experiences and enables practical knowledge and information to be exchanged.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT : The present research set out to explore parents‟ perceptions of therapeutic horseback riding as an activity for their children with multiple disabilities. It was designed to explore their vicarious experiences of the activity as well as their perceptions of their children‟s experiences of the activity. In order to achieve this, a semi-structured interview was set up with 12 parents whose children participate in therapeutic horseback riding at the South African Riding for the Disabled Association (SARDA) in Constantia, Cape Town. The children ranged in age from 6-17 years and had a range of disabilities including physical and intellectual disabilities. Upon completion of the interviews, the data was transcribed by the researcher and analysed using thematic analysis. Following thematic analysis, three themes emerged: the effects of therapeutic horseback riding on the children, parents‟ personal experiences of therapeutic horseback riding and SARDA, and parents‟ perceived reasons for the improvements in their children. These results are supported by results in existing literature. The results however also address a gap in the existing literature regarding parents‟ perceptions of therapeutic horseback riding and their children‟s experiences of the activity. The present work displays the fields of horse usage in rehabilitation and sozialization. An experiment where six children with physical and motion disorders (spina bifida and cerebral palsy) at age of 2.5 14 years took parts presented. duration of participation in the experiment of the investigated children varies from 3 months up to 2 years. After applying therapy of horse-riding, functions of body movements of children have improved, they have become more mobile. The hypothesis raised at the beginning of the research concerning responsive movements of a rider caused by a horse in a three-dimensional space was proved. The research results showed that due to horse-riding therapy functions of body movements of the investigated had improved. Data obtained during assessment and quantitative observation of funktions of body movements allows us drawing a conclusion that the higher funtions of body movements of the investigated child, the more stabile psycho-emotional state during horse-riding is. Assessment of functions of body movements and data obtained during quantitative observation allow us drawing the conclusion that the more functions of body movements are higher the faster the investigated master horse-riding skills. However, it was noticed that changes of horse-riding skills of the investigated were influenced by their age, psycho-emotional state, personal features, too. Data obtained during the experiment showed that change of horse-riding skills during horse-riding... [to full text]
Vande, Putte D. W. "Riding the Galactic potential." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1306881/.

Full text
Abstract:
At the outset of this study, we implemented a series of axisymmetric, time-invariant Galactic potential models, by coding these numerically. With these potentials, we carried out a series of investigations in Galactic dynamics, related to Globular Cluster disk impacts, Open Cluster birth scenarios, and Planetary Nebula trajectories. The first of these studies relates to the crossing of the Galactic disk by a Globular Cluster to examine whether these could produce star formation due to gravitational focussing or compression of disk material. We report on simulations of the effect on disk material which reveal that the crossing can sometimes cause local gravitational focussing of disk material. This adds to the strong compression that can result from the shock wave generated by a GC disk crossing examined by Levy (2000). The main thrust of this first study is a search for any remnants of disk crossings by Globular Clusters. Using the gravitational potential of the Galaxy to locate the position of the most recent crossings of a subset of fifty-four Globular Clusters reveals that systematic errors and uncertainties in initial conditions limit the scope for unequivocal identification. From the subset of fifty-four, six possible search sites with the best constraints are retained for further scrutiny. Three of the six potentially promising search areas in the disk relate to Globular Clusters NGC 3201, 6397 and NGC 6838, for which we cannot rule out some observed star associations observed nearby as being remnants. The three other of the six areas are too large to provide meaningful identification of remnants. Also, a possible remnant (Open Cluster NGC6231) is shown not to be due to Globular Cluster impact, contrary to a previous report. In a more wide-ranging screening of one hundred and fifty-five Globular Clusters we identify which Globular Clusters are compatible with being responsible for the formation of any of the Galaxy’s five most prominent Star Super Clusters. For the second study, we considered six mechanisms so far proposed to account for the Galactic disk heating. Of these, the most important appear to be a combination of scattering of stars by molecular clouds and by spiral arms. We study a further mechanism, namely the repeated disk impact of the original Galactic Globular Cluster population up to the present. We find that Globular Clusters could have contributed a small fraction of the current vertical energy of the disk, as they could heat the whole disk to σz = 5.5kms−1 (c.f. the observed 18 and 39 kms−1 for the thin and thick disks respectively). We find that the rate of rise of disk heat (α=0.22 in σz ∼ tα with t being time) from GC heating, is close to that found for scattering by molecular clouds. Our third investigation relates to the Galactic population of Open Clusters which provides an insight into star formation in the Galaxy. The Open Cluster catalogue by Dias et al.(2002b) is a rich source of data, including kinematic information. Using this large sample we carry out a systematic analysis of 481 Open Cluster orbits, using parameters based on orbit eccentricity and separation from the Galactic plane. These two parameters may be indicative of cluster origin, and we find them to be correlated. We also find them to be correlated with metallicity, another parameter suggested elsewhere to be a marker for origin, in that high values of any of these two parameters generally indicate a low metallicity ([Fe/H] Solar< −0.2 dex). The resulting analysis points to four Open Clusters in the catalogue potentially being of extra-Galactic origin by impact of high velocity clouds on the disk: Berkeley21, 32, 99, and Melotte66, with a possible further four due to this origin (NGC2158, 2420, 7789, IC1311). A further three may be due to Galactic Globular Cluster impact on the disk i.e. of internal Galactic origin (NGC6791, 1817, and 7044). We show that clusters with highly eccentric orbits and thus low metallicity move in and out radially in the disk, thus transporting low metallicity radially across the disk. This led us to undertake observations at the WHT (November 2010), to assess the metallicity of the top six candidates with the most eccentric orbits. In a fourth study, we use the orbit sizes to constrain parameters related to the core star of Planetary Nebulae. Firstly, we map the orbit of the core of Sh-2-216 and observe from its vertical extent, that this is a thin disk object. Secondly, we plot the orbits of the core of Sh-2-68 for various values of its current distance, this being a parameter affected by a large uncertainty, and we fix the maximum current distance to at most 600pc; any larger value would lead to an unbound orbit. In a final study we examine cases where the Galactic potential is not axisymmetric (due to spirals), and cases where the axisymmetric potential varies in time, due to Galactic evolution (due to mass increase). The non-axisymmetric features allow us to examine the extent of radial stellar mixing in the disk, and we find that stars can be ejected from their Keplerian disk orbit up to an altitude of several kpc, and this may contribute to disk heating discussed above. This underlines the role of non-axisymmetric features in Galactic evolution. Lastly, we investigate the impact on stellar orbits of a Galaxy whose mass increases with time, and find that large effects can be expected, but not for orbits occurring within the last ∼10 Myr or ∼1 Gyr. We conclude the work by suggesting further model improvements and their applications.

Doyle, Anthony John Redfern. "The skill of bicycle riding." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1987. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6041/.

Full text
Abstract:
The principal theories of human motor skill are compared. Disagreements between them centre around the exact details of the feedback loops used for control. In order to throw some light on this problem a commonplace skill was analysed using computer techniques to both record and model the movement. Bicycle riding was chosen as an example because it places strict constraints on the freedom of the rider's actions and consequently allows a fairly simple model to be used. Given these constraints a faithful record of the delicate balancing movements of the handlebar must also be a record of the rider's actions in controlling the machine. An instrument pack, fitted with gyroscopic sensors and a handlebar potentiometer, recorded the roll, yaw and steering angle changes during free riding in digital form on a microcomputer disc. A discrete step computer model of the rider and machine was used to compare the output characteristic of various control systems with that of the experimental subjects. Since the normal bicycle design gives a measure of automatic stability it is not possible to tell how much of the handlebar movement is due to the rider and how much to the machine. Consequently a bicycle was constructed in which the gyroscopic and castor stability were removed. In order to reduce the number of sensory contributions the subjects were blindfolded. The recordings showed that the-basic method of control was a combination of a continuous delayed repeat of the roll angle rate in the handle-bar channel, with short intermittent ballistic acceleration inputs to control angle of lean and consequently direction., A review of the relevant, literature leads to the conclusion that the proposed control system is consistent with current physiological knowledge. Finally the bicycle control system discovered in the experiments is related to the theories of motor skills discussed in the second chapter.

Abstract:
What follows are the motivations and desires behind my writing and why I chose to pursue writing in the first place. This paper not only gives context to my creative stories, but it also functions as a self-portrait, a glimpse of the writer behind the text. In this paper, I speak of my experiences of growing up in a marginalized group, of being a daughter of Mexican immigrants and a member of the working class. I explain how those experiences helped shape the content and voice that I portray in my collection of short stories called, Somewhere Between Here and There. This collection of short stories emerged at the start of my graduate program but it was a project that was slowly accumulating over the years. The collection centers on the invisibility of a Latino community and dramatizes the challenges that they face as individuals and as a group. Many of my characters face challenges both at an individual and institutional level that causes fragmentation. In the end, each character tries to cope with their situation while trying to find and discover a sense of self and belonging in the world.

Sellick, Jayne Margaret. "Becoming disabled." Thesis, Durham University, 2014. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/9471/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the becoming of disabled people’s identities, illustrating the multiple and complex temporalities that shift and move in flux as disabilities, health conditions and illnesses change over time. Understanding disability as an unfolding process of continuous change, the thesis forwards the concept of ‘becoming disabled’ as tying together disabled people’s lived and embodied experiences. An unfolding participatory qualitative research methodology was developed with eight participants and their partners. Four methods were chosen by participants to explore their experiences: drawing participatory timelines, taking photographs through photovoice, talking in conversations and writing diary entries. The research process itself moved back and forth, overlapping and churning through cycles of participation, action and reflection, shaping the subsequent findings, which are arranged under four key themes. ‘Becoming emotional’ explores the gendered and emotional temporalities of events, such as diagnosis, accident and injury, to everyday acts that shape the future. ‘Becoming well’ illustrates the affective capacity of material items to facilitate day-to-day and lifelong recoveries. ‘Becoming mobile’ discusses the pace, speed and rhythm of walking and wheeling. ‘Memories’ of disability, health conditions and illnesses continue to unfold, shaping new possibilities and new futures. The thesis concludes that becoming disabled is an underlying, always present and unfolding process of continuous change, which differs to the fixed and categorical basis of ‘being disabled’ which has characterised much research. Becoming disabled is always reaching forward and never complete, emphasising the intricacies of time, the temporalities, the moments, the transitions and the trajectories of becoming, in everyday life and across the life course. The research sought to examine the everyday practices and processes that shape disabled people’s identities; and to explore the role of the past, the present, and the future in disabled people’s lives. Suggestions are made for future research.

Deal, Mark. "Attitudes of disabled people toward other disabled people and impairment groups." Thesis, City, University of London, 2006. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/17416/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research set-out to: a) investigate attitudes of disabled people (adults) toward other disabled people; and, b) attitudes of disabled people toward different impairment groups. Comparative data from a non-disabled sample was also collected. Two new attitude rating scales were developed for this research: the General Attitude Scale Toward Disabled People (GASTDP) and the Attitude Toward Impairment Scale (A TIS). Both scales achieved acceptable levels of internal and external reliability. Positive attitudes toward disabled people were found from both the disabled (M = 41.08; n = 193) and non-disabled samples (M = 39.29; n = 120). However, a hierarchy of impairment also appears to exist, with the disabled sample producing a rank ordering of most accepted to least of Deaf, Arthritis, Epilepsy, Cerebral Palsy, HIV/AIDS, Down's Syndrome and Schizophrenia. The nondisabled sample rank ordering was the same for five of the seven impairment groups, with only Cerebral Palsy and HIV / AIDS being placed in reverse order. The GASTDP contains two sub-scales (Subtle and Blatant Prejudice subscales). Statistically significant results between the two sub-scales were found for both the disabled and non-disabled samples, suggesting people tend to hold subtle forms of prejudice toward disabled people. The discussion therefore utilises the term aversive disablism, based on aversive racism. This theory argues that whilst people may be reluctant to express negative attitudes toward disabled people, they may also support policies that are disablist, i.e. segregated housing. The contact hypothesis, whereby contact with members of a minority group influence attitudes, was not supported by the data. This thesis recommends further research into subtle forms of prejudice toward disabled people from an in-group perspective and attitudes toward different impairment groups.

Drouvelis, Michail. "Essays on framing, free riding, and punishment." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2009. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11815/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an experimental investigation of free riding behaviour and, more particularly, individual responses to it using, as a workhorse, the so called public goods game. This game starkly isolates the conflict between private and collective interest, providing us with a simple measure of the extent of free riding behaviour. The unifying theme of the thesis is elicitation and analysis of different indicators for how subjects perceive free riding under a number of treatment manipulations. Chapter 2 explores how people judge the morality of free riding in a public goods game by eliciting people's moral evaluations in hypothetical scenarios. The scenarios differed with respect to the framing of the game, the order of moves, and the behaviour of the non-judged player. Our findings suggest that free riding is perceived as morally reprehensible, except when the free rider moves second after observing that the other player free rode as well. We also find that moral judgments depend on others' behaviour, on framing and on the order of moves. Chapter 3 analyses the effect of framing on social preferences, as measured by self- reported emotions and punishment. Our findings are that, for a given pattern of contributions, neither punishment nor emotion depends on our framing manipulation. Chapter 4 assesses the behavioural consequences of unfair punishment. In this experiment, we generate an unfair environment by assigning punishment to all group members, irrespective of their first stage behaviour, We find that, although unfair punishment causes a different time profile of contributions, contributions are, on average, little different from in the standard punishment game; and the assignment of punishment in the latter is unaffected by experience of an environment with unfair punishment. However, a history of unfair punishment causes different reactions to helping behaviour and punishment received, respectively.

In the field of transportation, cables are used in cable-riding systems like cable cars, tramways, and gondola lifts. Vibration is induced in these systems. These vibrations are undesirable.

High-voltage power line cables are important part of our lives. Inspection of these power lines is necessary to eliminate the risk of power outages. Earlier power lines were inspected by skilled humans by crawling along the power lines. This inspection task was replaced by cable riding inspection robots to eliminate the risk to human life.

This research explains various inspection robots and problems in these types of cable-riding systems. In this research, to determine the vibrations in the cable due to riding load, a new simple cable-mass system was developed. This new cable-mass system makes it easy to develop a control system to reduce the cable vibrations.

To inspect the power lines, HiBot developed an inspection robot called Expliner that travels along the live power lines. For uninterrupted inspection operation, Expliner traverses obstacles on the power lines with its intelligent acrobatic mode. In this mode, Expliner is subjected to rocking oscillation. This rocking oscillation is also induced in the cables cars. This rocking is undesirable and is unsafe.

This research introduces a method to reduce rocking in cable-riding systems. This method, called input shaping, is used to run simulations for Expliner traveling along curved cables. This research develops an input shaper to reduce rocking in cable-riding robots like Expliner.

This dissertation focuses on three of the most important questions in entrepreneurship study, namely venture financing, corporate strategy and firm performance. The main thrust of the dissertation is to elaborate the mechanisms through which institutional and social factors impact entrepreneurial activities in developing countries. The first essay, "Evaluation or Attention", examines the causal mechanisms of social ties in venture financing. A staged model of network effects is developed, showing that the prior literature has drawn erroneous conclusions about the role of social ties as they conflate VC's evaluation of entrepreneurs with the necessary preceding act of becoming aware of them. The second essay, coauthored with Yasheng Huang, examines the institutional driver of local entrepreneur's foreign direct investment (FDI) seeking behavior. We find that the Chinese economic system has a political pecking order in which private enterprises are located at the bottom. FDI-seeking behavior, while diluting local entrepreneurs' ownership controls, helps change their firms' political status to transcend institutional constraints. The third essay examines the role of bureaucratic legacy upon entrepreneurial performance. I find that Chinese entrepreneurs with work experiences in the public sector have better access to state controlled resources but low efficiency in utilizing these resources. This pattern reflects that entrepreneurs are organizational products: individuals' past work experiences shape both their positions within the social structure and the organizational blueprints that they transfer to new ventures.

Carter, Elizabeth A. "Phonetic Ambiguity Perception in Reading Disabled and Non-disabled Children and Adolescents." VCU Scholars Compass, 1986. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/4400.

Full text
Abstract:
There are speculations that disabled readers may fail to correctly decode written words because they are insensitive to language's phonetic form. This insensitivity is presumed by some to be due to a speech perceptual deficit. The purpose of the current study was to assess differences between disabled and non-disabled adolescents and elementary school students in their perceptual accuracy in decoding phonetically ambiguous speech. The effects of two processing factors derived from previous research, priming and word form (e.g., Spencer & Carter, 1982), were also examined to assess how perceptual processes may differ between groups. Clinical evidence of some verbal problems persisting in adolescent disabled populations and evidence of compensatory differences between elementary and adolescent readers on earlier phonetic coding tasks prompted the inclusion of alI four age group by reading group combinations. Results reveal no reading group differences of either age grouping. The results are discussed in terms of design considerations, previous pertinent speech perception research, and similarity of responses to those of normal subjects in Spencer and Carter (1982) and Carter and Zoller (1983). With an examination of two dependent measures and a qualitative analysis of errors, no reading group differences were found. Therefore, it Is suggested that explanations involving speech perception may not appropriately address the problems of disabled readers with problems in word decoding.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about impairment, disability and health. Placed in the context of Disability Studies, it engages with the theoretical debates about how disability and impairment should be conceived. In doing so it pays particular attention to the embodiment of impairment and its relation to health matters. It also identifies and discusses the reasons for the apparent reluctance of Disability Studies to engage with health issues. The main source of data is interviews with 28 disabled people from Edinburgh and the Lothians. Using semi structured interviews, participants were encouraged to talk about their experiences of using healthcare including the access barriers they faced, the expertise they developed to manage their health care encounters and how these encounters mediated and were mediated by their lived experience as disabled people. A secondary source of data is autoethnographic writing. Through reflexivity, an assessment is made of the value and validity of using this method to explicitly incorporate the researcher’s own experiences in to the data and its analysis. Similarly reflexivity is deployed to consider the methodological issues that arise from the researcher being disabled and encountering access barriers during the research process. There were three sets of findings from the research. First, participants’ body talk suggested that in everyday life impairment and maintaining good health can be understood as something which is done by the embodied self to the body. This doing is often a taken-for-granted activity. It is also mediated through a number of factors including emotions, disabling barriers and broader social and economic structures. Second, participants’ accounts of the access barriers they faced when using the NHS suggested that there are two categories of access needs, the macro and micro. While macro needs such as ramped or flat access to premises were anticipated and routinely met without participants having to take any action, participants often felt they had to take the initiative to ensure their micro needs, such as the need for a hoist, were met. Some micro access needs were particular to a healthcare context and often emerged during diagnostic tests or treatment procedures. Healthcare professionals had to have sufficient skills and confidence to respond effectively to these clinical micro needs. The third set of findings was that some participants developed expertise to enable them to access the appropriate services to meet their needs and form a high quality relationship with healthcare professionals. However, other participants recalled situations where their expertise was not respected and felt abandoned by the NHS. The first set of findings has implications for theoretical development in Disability Studies. More work is needed to connect the doing of impairment to theoretical approaches found in sociology of the body and to empirically explore the nature and scope of impairment doing, The second and third set of findings have implications for current healthcare practice particularly in the context of the NHS’ responsibility under the Disability Discrimination Act.

Rowell, Stuart. "Modelling the control strategies for riding a motorcycle." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2007. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/14479/.

Full text
Abstract:
Computer simulation models are increasingly necessary as a design tool for modern vehicles, for which a subcategory relates to motorcycles. Simulation models can be employed for a variety of applications, an important area of which relates to the motorcycle's dynamic responses. The response of a motorcycle is heavily dependent on the rider's control actions, and consequently a means of replicating the rider's actions provides an important extension to this area. The application of mathematical control techniques for replicating the motorcycle rider's control actions is presented in this thesis, detailing specifically the techniques of optimal control and model predictive control. The work begins with modelling the dynamics of the motorcycle using standard procedures. The application of optimal control to a motorcycle rider is not new, but the available results have been extended significantly over those previously available, allowing further insights into the behaviour and therefore applicability of this strategy to modelling a motorcycle rider. Use of the model predictive control approach is new in the field of motorcycle rider modelling, and a similarly extensive parametric study is conducted to evaluate the suitability of this approach, and to highlight the similarities and differences between this and the optimal control approach. Both controller models were simulated over a standard single lane-change manoeuvre. Comparison of the relative performances of the two control approaches confirmed strong similarities between the techniques, particularly when the modelled rider is permitted an extensive knowledge of the approaching road path to follow. When this knowledge is restricted, differences were apparent between the two, suggesting the predictive control approach is capable of better performance here, and therefore represents a more robust control strategy. An option of the predictive control approach allows more elaborate target paths for the rider to follow to be set. However, defining the target path for the rider model to follow as the road centreline, and then permitting the controller itself to select the most appropriate course to take, has also been shown to be the more suitable option. The predictive control technique for motorcycle rider modelling is shown to be a theoretically suitable application. Further work is suggested to validate the results presented here. If it can be confirmed that the model accurately captures a motorcycle rider's actions, this will prove a very useful tool for the understanding of a motorcycle rider's control actions, with potential benefits towards rider safety and furthermore as a design tool for the motorcycle industry.

Abstract:
This study used video feedback to improve the horseback riding skills of advanced beginner riders. The study focused on three skill sets, those used in jumping over obstacles, dressage riding on the flat, and jumping position riding on the flat. Baseline consisted of standard lesson procedures. Intervention consisted of video feedback in which a recorded attempt at the target behaviors was immediately shown to the rider and the instructor. The rider and instructor reviewed the video while the instructor delivered feedback. Target behaviors were scored according to checklists that correspond to each skill. For all participants, video feedback increased their correct riding skills.

Bogle, Kenneth R. "Riding the Marches in Scotland c.1500-1996." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/21633.

Full text
Abstract:
The 'Riding of the Marches' or the 'Common Riding' refers to a series of festivals which take place annually in several Scottish towns. These festivals are loosely based on the old custom of a ceremonial procession, usually on horseback, around the boundary of the burgh common, which was intended to delineate the area and check any encroachment upon it by neighbouring landowners and others. Some ridings, such as Lanark, Linlithgow and Selkirk, have a continuous history since the sixteenth-century, whilst others are more recent innovations. The modern event is primarily associated with the Scottish Borders. The purpose of this thesis is to trace the historical development and evolution of the ridings from the sixteenthcentury to the present. The thesis is broadly chronological and is arranged in six chapters. Chapter One provides a detailed introduction and overview of the modern ridings. The intention is to explain some of the terminology and other features of the ridings, and to indicate the nature of these events and state why they are important. Chapter Two begins the chronological history of the ridings by examining the earliest records of the event. Chapter Three considers the battle of Flodden Field (1513) and the various Common Riding traditions about it. Chapter Four examines the form and functions of the eighteenth-century ridings. Chapter Five covers the period between 1830 to 1900, when profound social and economic change challenged and influenced the event. Chapter Six concludes the history of the ridings, and covers the period between 1880 to the present. There is also a plate section between Chapters Three and Four. This thesis demonstrates that the modern ridings are complex events, which are the product of several centuries of adaptation and development. Although derived from an old custom, the modern ridings continue to occupy a vital place in the lives of people who participate in them.

Lee, Carolyn Patricia. "Taxonomic and frequency associations in memory in learning-disabled and non-disabled children." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186061.

Full text
Abstract:
This study addressed the semantic memory processes of learning disabled (LD) and non-disabled children. The semantic memory deficits of LD students are familiar to most educators; however, the nature of these difficulties is not understood precisely. Some researchers propose that an early form of memory organization is association of items by frequency. These associative relations may be the precursors to taxonomic memory organization, thus may be weak in LD children. This study examined second and sixth grade children's free recall organization of two types of 3 word lists: one in which items were associated by frequency and one in which items were related taxonomically; within each word list, half of the items were primary category members or frequency associates and half were secondary category members or frequency associates. It was hypothesized that younger, non-disabled children would rely more on frequency associations and that older, unimpaired subjects would tend to organize the material categorically. Learning disabled subjects were predicted to show impairments in the ability to form both frequency associations and categories during recall, particularly for the secondary items. These results were not found. Younger, non-disabled subjects organized words categorically as proficiently as their older peers, and LD children's categorization abilities were comparable to non-disabled subjects'. The only item type for which LD subjects showed significantly less clustering than non-disabled subjects was secondary frequency associates, which were viewed as representing the periphery of the knowledge base. The principal difference between this study and previous, similar research was the use of individual, child-generated word lists. Because all words were highly familiar and meaningful to the children, relationships between most of the items were probably quite salient, more so than in other studies using adult-generated words as stimuli. Thus, this study indicates that LD children are not impaired in their ability to recognize and utilize semantic structure to facilitate learning if material is highly meaningful and familiar to them.

Abstract:
Investigations of children's spatial ability have typically looked at performance on laboratory tasks, and none have examined differences between learning disabled and non-learning disabled children. The present study surveyed sixty-seven parents of third and sixth grade children about the types of spatial activities children engage in everyday. Parents of learning disabled and non-learning disabled children were included. Results provided information about the types of spatial activities children engage in and the relationships between participation and performance. Major findings included differences between learning disabled and non-learning disabled children in navigational ability and in the strategies employed in difficult or ambiguous spatial situations. Findings were discussed in terms of the influence learning disabled children's negative self evaluations have on their performance.

Bezzina, Lara. "Disabled voices in development? : the implications of listening to disabled people in Burkina Faso." Thesis, Durham University, 2017. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/12100/.

Full text
Abstract:
Development discourse and practice have generally ignored, even silenced, people with disabilities. In response, this thesis draws on the case of Burkina Faso to bring geographies of development and disability into dialogue with postcolonial theory, which seeks to recuperate the voices of the marginalised and oppressed. It adopts a mixed ethnographic methods approach, including participatory techniques and interviews, in order to understand the lived experiences of disabled people in Burkina Faso. The thesis first examines the general context of Burkina Faso and the different aspects of Burkinabe life and society in which disabled people’s lives unfold. These aspects are interlinked with the perceptions of disability in Burkina Faso, both in how society perceives disability and in how disabled people view themselves. These perceptions, which are explored subsequently, affect the lived experiences of disabled people, which are often not taken into account by development practitioners who intervene in disabled people’s lives using western models and ideologies. Furthermore, development interventions influence the creation and functioning of grassroots disabled people’s organisations, and here the thesis looks at the challenges these organisations face with regard to their heavy dependence on external partners as well as the lack of ‘organisational spirit’. Finally, the thesis examines disabled people’s perceptions of development and the emphasis on economic independence as an essential element in a disabled person’s life to challenge the predominant perception of disabled people as a burden. It highlights the significance of opening up spaces in which disabled people’s voices can be heard, using techniques such as participatory video, and the significance of having these voices heard by development practitioners. The findings indicate that there is a need to theorise disability from Global South perspectives, as well as to facilitate development through an engagement with the voices and agency of disabled people.

Abstract:
There is a lack of research based data in the field of learning disabilities, especially at the secondary level. The purpose of this study was to evaluate personality configuration patterns and vocational interests through the administration of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Abbreviated Version (AV) and the Self-Directed Search, Form E (EASY) for learning disabled (LD) and non-learning disabled (NLD) students. The sample included 90 LD students and 100 Non-LD students grades 9 through 12 in a large suburban school system. Research questions considered: (1) differences in personality and vocational interest between LD and NLD students; (2) age and gender of LD and NLD students in relationship to vocational interests; (3) relationship between personality patterns and vocational interests between LD and NLD students. Treatment of the data used both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. Analyses relied on categorical data, and the chi-square test was the statistical test used. Demographics provided data on groups regarding ability level and reading achievement scores related to occupational preferences and gender characteristics. Results indicated that no significant personality differences existed between LD and NLD adolescents. It was found, after looking at all possible interactions between vocational preferences and personality, age, grade, and gender, that significant differences occurred with gender and vocational preferences for both LD/NLD groups. Additionally, EI and TF differences in vocational preferences existed for LD and NLD students. EI and TF differences between LD and NLD career preference showed LD I's and T's prefer mechanical careers, whereas NLD I's and T's prefer teaching and sales. This is correlated with gender preference of LD males for mechanical (non interactive careers), whereas NLD prefer interactive careers

Walker, Alexis Philbin. "Parenting Stress: A Comparison of Mothers and Fathers of Disabled and Non-Disabled Children." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2000. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc2686/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study compared perceived levels of parenting stress between mothers and fathers of children with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), children with developmental disabilities, and normally developing children. The relationship of certain demographic variables, such as Socio-economic Status (SES), number of children, years married, parent age, and child age, as well as social support with parenting stress was also examined for mothers and fathers of these three groups. Identification of factors related to parenting stress in fathers was of particular importance for this study, as fathers are often an underrepresented group within parenting research. Identifying effective methods for predicting high levels of parenting stress is important, as stress has been linked to psychological well-being, potential for abuse, and a greater likelihood of poor adjustment for both parent and child. Results from the present study comparing reported stress levels between groups of parents were supportive of previous studies indicating that parents of children with ADHD and developmentally disabilities experience significantly greater parenting stress, specifically with respect to child characteristics. Significant gender differences were also found between mothers and fathers in terms of parent characteristics related to stress. Fathers reported greater stress in the areas of attachment, while mothers reported more parent role restrictions. Additionally, significant negative relationships were found between parents' perceived helpfulness of informal social support and parenting stress scores in both mothers and fathers, affirming positive effects of social support on stress. Helpfulness of informal social support was also significantly predictive of parenting stress in both mothers and fathers across both the child and parent domains of the PSI, although, it had more predictive power with regard to parent related contributors to parenting stress. Family demographic factors, including age of the child and SES demonstrated some predictive power of parenting stress in mothers. Mothers with younger children and lower SES were more likely to report greater parenting stress. Implications of these results and future directions for research are also discussed.

Bunt, Sarah. "The adoption of disabled children." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2854.

Full text
Abstract:
The research has set out to examine the motives that contribute towards the decision to adopt a disabled child. Increased knowledge about placing disabled children for adoption is particularly important as they are regarded as the category hardest to place (Adoption Register 2009). Despite the wide gaps in knowledge, the negativity associated with the social construction of disability has been seen as a cause of disabled children’s disadvantage (Cousins 2009). Synthesising a Critical Realist framework with Grounded Theory methods; to examine both the efforts of local authorities to place a disabled child for adoption, as well as the narratives of those adopters who take on disabled child. The findings reveal that social workers often take a tentative approach to placing a disabled child, which impacts upon adoption outcomes, both in the way they represent disabled children and in the way they recruit and assess adopters. The Rationalistic Habitus is a concept used to reflect the way social workers reason their way through particular issues before arriving at a practice judgement. The study, also examines the narratives of adopters and their journey through the process of adopting a child with a significant impairment. Instances where adopters embark on adopting a disabled child are significant because they are making a decision in opposition to a prevailing discourse where disabled children are conceptualised as a burden to their families (Jordan and Sales 2007). An examination of these adopter’s motives requires one to think more deeply about how motives are processed. By focusing on the Habitus and reflexivity this research has attempted to bring new insights into how people process the prospect of becoming a parent to a disabled child. However, while the decision to adopt a disabled child might appear unconventional it is not so abnormal that we cannot make sense of their motives. The lifelong nature of the adoption role demonstrates that commitment is at the heart of these adoptions. The notion of a Commitment Habitus is reflected when adopters express an innate drive to nurture. In effect, this research contends that the motive to adopt a disabled child is wrapped in an orientation to invest in social relationships.

Abstract:
The fast developing technologies can benefit disabled people from many ways. However, it also formed new gap to them and caused their lives to be marginalized by the digital society. The purpose of this research was to find out issues and problems disabled people meet in the e-Society. A literature study was conducted as the research method by trying to follow the principles of systematic literature review method. 51 articles were collected from the online publication database to support this research. The results found out that the reasons caused the exclusion of disabled people are because of the issues of affordability, impairments of disabled people and social phenomenon. The price of mainstream technologies in the market is not affordable to the majority number of disabled people since the low employment rate and low income level keep most of them living in poverty. On one hand, the impairments of disabled people not only affect their lives and works, but also limited their ability to have the access to various technologies. On the other hand, the design of technologies has not fully covered the needs of disabled users, which causes many challenges and problems during the experiment of technologies. Moreover, due to the average low level of education, disabled people are lacking of technical knowledge in how to use ICT, especially in the group of female and senior people with disabilities. The most important finding in this research paper demonstrates that more than half of the articles mentioned the issue of lacking awareness in disabled people. The situation of exclusion of disabled people in today’s digital world can be changed if the whole society could pay more attention to their challenges and problems.

Full text
Abstract:
A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a self-organised wireless network where mobile nodes can communicate with each other without the need of any existing network infrastructure or centralised administration. There are no dedicated routing devices and each node has to rely on others to cooperatively provide forwarding services to ensure global connectivity. In an open MANET, different nodes may have different authorities and different goals. To conserve their own resources, some nodes may choose not to cooperate while still using the network to forward their packets. Uncooperative or misbehaving nodes can significantly degrade the performance of a MANET. Most previous works to mitigate the effects of misbehaving nodes focus on data forwarding. However, dropping control packets is a better strategy for the selfish nodes to avoid themselves from being requested to forward data packets. In this thesis, a new scheme is proposed to detect free-riding nodes which exhibit such a strategy. In the detection scheme, each node operates in promiscuous mode and monitors the activities of its neighbouring node. All nodes in the network are expected to contribute to the network on the continual basis within each predefined time frame. Those which fail will undergo a suspicious checking procedure to test for the suspicious behaviour. Detection alone is not enough to deal with free-riding nodes. To encourage the nodes to be cooperative, three variations of punishment schemes are proposed. The schemes punish free-riding nodes by isolating them and refusing them services.

Abstract:
Local and affiliated order friendly societies which together formed the largest working-class movement in Victorian Britain have been largely ignored by social and labour historians. Oddfellows, Foresters, Druids, Shepherds and Gardeners with their ritual, regalia, and secrecy imitative of Freemasonry, emerged as benefit societies in industrial Yorkshire and Lancashire in the second and third decades of the nineteenth century. The orders exploded into the East Riding in the wake of the passing of the New Poor Law in 1834 and its implementation three years later but many branches suffered severe set-backs or extinction during the economic crisis which hit agriculture in 1848-52. A substantial number of those that survived, many of them well into the twentieth century, chose independence rather than the authoritarian rule of a national headquarters.Affiliated branches far from being the preserve of the urban artisan, as has been often suggested, had an extensive agricultural worker membership. The founders and leaders of branches, which were most commonly located in larger open settlements with a substantial nonconformist and artisan population, were drawn from all sections of the membership but village craftsmen predominated. The club anniversary which became the principal feast day for many villages was initially, along with public house meetings and funeral ritual, much criticised by Anglican clergy. They found, however, that their annual sermon and attendance at the dinner gave them their principal point of contact with the rural working-class, a fact also realised after 1885 by politicians. The sickness and funeral benefits provided by the orders were considerable in relation to agricultural workers' incomes in the mid-19th century but higher wages and the passing of the National Insurance Act in 1912 considerably decreased their significance to the rural community.

The retail sector has evolved from a multichannel environment in which sales channels operated independently all the way through to an omnichannel perspective in which there is a persistent intersection between channels. Consumers rely now on several different journeys from searching to purchasing. These new ways of shopping have motivated consumers to engage in free-riding behavior. Free-riding is observed when consumers seek information from a particular retailer or channel but choose different ones to purchase their goods. This particular behavior may erode companies¿ profits and has recently concerned retailers. Based on all of that, this research¿s general objective was to explore the antecedents that may influence consumer¿s switching behavior between retailers and channels and their free-riding intentions. It also aimed to investigate whether consumer¿s Multichannel self-efficacy, Within firm lock-in and Attractiveness of off-line stores affects consumer¿s free-riding intentions. In order to meet the objectives, this research has built up some hypotheses that were tested through a survey. Questionnaires were sent by email to 36,223 people and a final result of 336 valid questionnaires were collected. Data analysis was made through Structural equation modelling (SEM) with Partial least square path modeling (PLS) using SmartPLS software. Confirmatory factor analysis was also conducted as well as analysis of descriptive statistics. Results have showed Internet experience and Vicarious experience have positive effects on Multichannel self-efficacy which have a direct influence on consumer¿s free-riding intentions. They also showed that Switching costs and Multichannel integration have positive effects on Within firm lock-in which has no influence on consumer¿s free-riding intentions. Finally, the results showed that Risk on purchasing on-line and Service quality of offline stores have positive effects on Attractiveness of off-line stores which it shows influence on consumer¿s free-riding intentions.

Abstract:
According to social psychologists, we as a species are inequity averse. We prefer conditions that foster fairness and reject injustice against common good. At the same time, however, unequal power and status hierarchies color almost every aspect of our lives. Advantages are distributed asymmetrically based on hierarchical status processes. Life, in other words, is systematically unfair in addition to being populated by free riders. Are the outcomes of potential free riders correlated with status as well? Does status affect the individual’s ability to successfully free ride? Are higher status actors typically granted a greater degree of social leniency than lower status actors? Are they less likely to be marked as free riders? I conducted a simple vignette study to in which participants were presented with a hypothetical, one-shot interaction, involving a collectively oriented, task in order to investigate the relationship between status and free riding.

Ludewig, Margaretha Clasina. "Theraupeutic horse riding as a learning support strategy for the development of 'core skills' in a paraplegic preschool child." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/941.

Full text
Abstract:
Although other forms of learning support such as remedial education and occupational therapy are available to assist a child with a learning barrier or developmental delay, this study set out to explore therapeutic horse riding as an alternative learning support strategy. The motivation was to support and develop the core skills of Amy, a preschool child who is physically disabled. The researcher’s premise was that owing to the limitations in Amy’s movement ability, certain developmental areas required for school readiness would be impacted. The aim of this case study was to describe the development of core skills such as perceptual-motor, socio-emotional and language and how these underlying abilities could develop through the movement modality of the horse. A therapeutic horse riding program was implemented over a period of time with the specific goal to stimulate certain core skills by encompassing mind and body. The horse, with its distinctive three-dimensional movement, facilitated this unique form of learning. Although European countries have made great progress in this area, South Africa is steadily following suit. Therefore, the researcher hoped to contribute to the body of existing knowledge within this field. Data were collected from different sources to substantiate the findings. Findings have revealed an improvement in many areas of Amy’s core skills, in particular her balance and posture, and the crossing of her midline. Further findings were that Amy’s concentration and listening skills improved and she became more even-tempered, confident and innovative during therapeutic horse riding (THR). The researcher recommends therapeutic horse riding as a supplementary learning support strategy within a school for special educational needs although it can also be implemented in the mainstream context. In this regard, the therapeutic horse riding therapist becomes a valued member of the support team in a collaborative endeavour to contribute to the holistic development of a child like Amy or any child with learning, emotional or behavioural needs. Although THR is considered a new field of therapy results have shown that it provides great benefits to those who experience it.

The study was designed to compare the motorcyclist riding alone with those riding jointly in traffic injuries. The study also did a street photo survey to understand the proportion of single riding vehicles and joint riding vehicles among motorcycles on the road, and the percentage of helmet use. Injured subjects due to motorcycle traffic accidents were chosen from six hospitals* emergency room records for " Experimental Study of Recordng Motor Vehicle Injury*s External Causes". Telephone interviews were made to collect these patients* personal data, helmet use , riding motorcycle alone or jointly, type of the motorcycle, and the speed at crashes. Injury data were taken directly from hospital records. Result: 1. The ratio of motorcyclists who rode alone to those who rode jointly on the road was 2.226:1, but the same type of ratio for injured motorcyclists found in emergency room was 4.97:1. Single riders seems to have higher chance to get injured.2. The proportion of motorcyclists wearing helmets for single riders, drivers of joint riders, and passengers were 30.6%, 14.5% and 4.5% respectively. 1. Patients of single riders and of joint riders were not different in injured location and the severity of injuries. 2. Sex, helmet use, driver*s license, type of the motorcycle and the speed at crash were related to injured location and the severity of injuries.3. After controled for sex, age, helmet use , driver*s license, type of the motorcycle and the speed at crash, there was no evidence to show the difference between motorcyclists riding alone and those riding jointly in injured location and the severity of injuries.

Abstract:
2045 a progressive European city is banning driving and BMW has to respond. Technological evolution, and a culture used to new interfaces leads to the option to recreate the relationship between human and car. But how to interact with our new friends? Talking to experts in the fields of science fiction, environmentalism, horse riding and piloting helped in first constructing a future and then tailoring an interface-vision for its inhabitants and their autonomous cars. The result is a tactile bond connecting driver and machine. Working together with your car doesn't have to mean loosing control, it's just another quality of control.

Arnet, Johan Peter Lundevall. "BW offshore : riding the storm." Master's thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/29214.

Abstract:
The modern company exists within an environment of constant change, brought on by economic interconnectedness and rapid technological progress. In this state of uncertainty, companies must actively create new value on a continuous basis in their pursuit for competitive advantage. In light of this precarious state of firm realities, two literature streams have been developed. Strategic Change theories focus on antecedents, processes and consequences of a major shift in an organisation’s goals and scope. The Dynamic Capabilities framework aims to explicate the capabilities within a firm that allows it to continuously recreate competitive advantages. To illustrate the application of these theories this dissertation employs a teaching case recounting the crisis and rebound of BW Offshore, an oil technology lessor. The case starts in late 2015 when the company was experiencing the aggregate impact of an untenable business model, market recession, and industrial accident. Next, the case recounts the subsequent firm survival and launch of a disruptive new business model. The case demonstrates the internal and external factors that led to a strategic change within the company. Moreover, it shows that the use of dynamic capabilities can be instrumental in the creation of surprising value within the context of a recessionary market.

In some places, bicycles are considered as one of the transport tools, and riding there is for function, while in some other places, bicycles are taken as physical activity, and thus riding there is for leisure. Riding for leisure or for function? 450 recreational cyclists from bicycle clubs and bicycles activities were sampled using convenience sampling, and there were 392 valid questionnaires or 89.2% of the sample. A self-developed questionnaire was administered to the respondents. This research firstly dealt with the relationship between recreational bicycling and bicycle commuting, second, the motivations and constraints of bicycle commuting were investigated, and finally, bicycle commuting policy was proposed. After the descriptive statistics analysis and Chi-square test, I concluded that there were strong connections between recreational bicycling and bicycle commuting, 38.5% of recreational cyclists also choose bicycle commuting. The motivations for bicycle commuting were enjoying riding bicycle, improving fitness, saving fuel, being environmentally-friendly, controlling weight, and commuting distance was short. The constraints to bicycle commuting were climate, lack of bikeways, bicycle theft, poor air quality, bad pavement, and safety. It is possible to encourage more cyclists to commute with bicycles by cycling awareness programs and better bicycling policies. The Taiwanese government should utilize the advantages of bicycle commuting, and promote cycling in Taiwan, not just for recreational purposes, but also for bicycle commuting purposes.
