Abstract:
Richard Ford’s Canada, published in 2012, seems to have evaded literary studies. This essay—which is an early contribution to the undoubtedly growing range of studies on Canada that will be published in the future—is concerned with how alienation is constructed in the novel. I refer to alienation as a sense of being out of place and becoming estranged, both to others as well as to one's self. The essay focuses mainly but not exclusively on the point of view of the fifteen-year-old protagonist Dell, who is thrown out into a world that has ceased to be adapted to his needs and which seems to threaten his very existence. To speak with Lukács, the protagonist steps out from an unproblematic world into a problematic one and is divided in the process as his ideas are no longer attainable. But this very process of division or alienation also creates room for agency, in the sense of independent action or the will to act independently. In Canada—particularly in the second part of the novel—alienation is constructed in the meetings between Dell and fragmented and morose characters. Dell is required to adapt to these people and the circumstances in which they meet, but in those same processes of adaptation he manages to find small ways out. This makes it possible for Dell to keep himself whole despite his deteriorating circumstances. Equally important for how alienation is constructed in the novel is the meeting between Dell and the landscape of the prairie. While the landscape at first seems to be a source of further alienation, it ultimately proves to be the only place where Dell experience communion.

Abstract:
The creative component of my project is a conteporary, confessional novel, Refrain. The narrator, Jake, has spent his youth chasing a life that matched his dreams - first as a would-be rock star and then by fleeing to India in search of exotic adventures with his girlfriend. Now he returns alone to the suburban backwater he'd tried so hard to escape, ready for stability and responsibility. However, his attempts to reinvent himself in this world of chronic unemployment and limited horizons are thrown into confusion by old friends, estranged fmaily members, an unresolved attachment, and by his musical successor - a volatile young woman with her own problems, who draws him back to things he'd rather forget and towards a future he isn't ready to face. Refain is a story of idealism and desire, fading hopes and unexpected opportunities, long-distance love and short-sightedness. The exegetical component of my project investigates the term 'portmodern confession' as an i ntersection of the confessional narrative mode and postmodernism, and its application to two recent texts: The sportswriter by Richard Ford, and The remains of teh day by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Abstract:
His study focuses on the works of Russell Banks, Raymond Carver and Richard Ford. They started writing during the 1960s and 1970s, at a time when the self-reflexivity and metafictional play of postmodernist writers were drawing a lot of critical attention in academic circles. However, they consider themselves to be realist writers. In “A Few Words about Minimalism,” John Barth suggested that the return to realist fiction in the mid-1970s could be both a reaction against so-called “postmodernist” fiction and a symptom of the social and economic unease of the period. Indeed, Cathedral, Continental Drift and The Sportswriter describe in accurate detail the everyday lives of ordinary American men and women during Reagan’s presidency. This study demonstrates that these authors are part of the American realist tradition, but that their strand of social realism also takes into account the postmodern context in which they write, by dealing with problems of representation that are typical of the period. Their works both use and challenge the literary conventions associated with the realist tradition, by underlining the artificiality of mimetic illusion at a time when reality itself is seen as a linguistic construct

Abstract:
Perhaps the greatest irony of postmodern American fiction has been the ascendency within its broad aegis of the very mode that the early postmoderns of the 1960s so dismissively repudiated, namely realism. This thesis aims to provide both a theoretical reading of this ascendency in relation to the earlier metafictional irrealism and also readings of selected key texts of the 'new realism' on their own post-Modern terms. This initial contextualization of the new American realism is therefore defined very much in relation to the more or less militant epistemic 'ultimism' ('ultimate' in the sense suggested by John Barth in his seminal 'Literature of Exhaustion') which both precedes and to some extent overlaps its own reflexive radicalism. Theoretical interest is focused to begin with, therefore, on such texts as 'The Literature of Exhaustion', Barth's early fiction, Jerome Klinkowitz's critical engagements with both metafiction and, as he terms it, 'experimental realism', and the 'European' new realism of Walter Abish and Peter Handke. But in attempting to find a critical vocabulary with which to analyze this new realism there arises the need for a more than simply comparative contextualisation. The thesis therefore narrows in scope in order to address more comprehensively the nature and origins of its evidently postmodern 'mimesis'. The fictions of Raymond Carver and Richard Ford are selected as broadly representative for the purposes of this exploration, not simply because they have been two of the most influential of the 'new realists' but also because they offer the clearest methodological route to a reading of the problematic but fundamentally important relationshp between this postmodern vernacular radicalism and the Modernist vernacular revolution pioneered by Stein, Anderson, Faulkner and, most significantly of all as regards this particular post-Modern turn, Hemingway.

Sinno, Neige. "L' écriture de l'inquiétude dans les nouvelles de Raymond Carver, Richard Ford et Tobias Wolff." Aix-Marseille 1, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2005AIX10108.

Abstract:

Micou, Ann McKinstry. "Here in New Jersey| Place in the fiction of Philip Roth, Richard Ford, and Junot Diaz." Thesis, Drew University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3633153.

Full text
Abstract:

This dissertation argues that three Pulitzer Prize-winning writers, Philip Roth, Richard Ford, and Junot Díaz—a native, a transplant, and a migrant to New Jersey—convey the impact of place on their characters in an immediate and compelling way. The New Jersey neighborhoods they evoke—a Jewish enclave, a largely white suburb, and an immigrant ghetto—crucially affect their characters' destinies. The introduction defines some narrative elements of "place," presents examples of its use in literary fiction set in New Jersey, and lays the groundwork for close readings of the fiction of Roth, Ford, and Díaz. Each chapter applies to the author's fiction some of the narrative elements defined in the introduction. The chapter on Roth examines the ambience of his Newark neighborhood and its consequences upon his narrators' identities, their feelings of belonging or of alienation, and their ambivalence about whether to stay or leave. While Roth returns to Newark repeatedly in his stories, some of the narrators abandon the place precisely because of its effect on them. The chapter on Ford examines the influence of place on the destiny of his narrator, Frank Bascombe. Frank, a Southern transplant to New Jersey, claims at first that "place means nothing"; he concludes that New Jersey "gives him something" and is where he belongs and wants to stay. The chapter on Díaz investigates the effect of dual places, the Dominican Republic and New Jersey, on the identity and destiny of Yunior, the narrator. The main ramification of place on Yunior's writing is his determination to bear witness to immigrants' voices that have gone unheard, "to sing my community out of silence." The conclusion shows that, despite the differences among the authors in terms of temperament, background, style, and theme, their reactions to place—the narrators' degrees of ambivalence and alienation and concerns about assimilation—have much in common and contribute to the understanding of the primary role of place in fiction and its repercussions upon characters' identities. In sum, place is character is destiny.

Brookes, Anne. "Richard Symonds in Rome, 1649-1651." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2000. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11404/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the notebook (British Library Egerton MS 1635) compiled by Richard Symonds (1617-1670), royalist exile and virtuoso, during his visit to Rome between 1649 to1651. The first volume of the thesis provides an analysis of the chronology of notebooks that Symonds wrote at the time and his methods of study, as well as a detailed reconstruction of his visits to a number of collections. The second volume consists of an annotated transcription of Egerton MS 1635, and an extract from British Library Additional MS 17919 which relates to Symonds's visit to Palazzo Barberini. Symonds's visits to the Borghese, Farnese, and Giustiniani collections in Rome allowed him to study at first hand major sixteenth-century works by Titian, Raphael, Caravaggio and the followers of the Carracci. He also visited four less important collections (which all had some renowned paintings) at Palazzo Mattei, Palazzo Spada, Palazzo Mazzerino and Palazzo Sachetti. In addition, Symonds made notes on Palazzo Barberini although he was only taken on a brief tour of this collection. Symonds's study of antique sculpture is revealed in his notes on the important collection he saw at Villa Medici, and two smaller ones belonging to Ippolitto Vitelleschi and the Pighini family. Symonds also encountered the circle of antiquaries and connoisseurs in Rome, which included Francesco Angelom, and among the artists he met were the painters Giovanni Angelo Camni (who served as his mentor) and Nicolas Poussin. Symonds was not only interested in art, architecture, and antiquities, but also the social and religious customs that he encountered, as well as early ventures into science and medicine. The taste and knowledge that he acquired in Rome is reflected in the paintings that he selected to record and admire, of which the vast majority were works by Titian, Raphael and the Carracci. A thorough investigation of Egerton MS 1635 establishes that Symonds's knowledge of Italian art was exceptional for an Englishman of the time.

Seidel, John A. (John Allen). "The Trombone Sonatas of Richard A. Monaco." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1988. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc330825/.

Full text
Abstract:
This lecture-recital investigated the music of Richard A. Monaco, especially the two sonatas for trombone (1958 and 1985). Monaco (1930-1987) was a composer, trombonist and conductor whose instrumental works are largely unpublished and relatively little known. In the lecture, a fairly extensive biographical chapter is followed by an examination of some of Monaco's early influences, particularly those in the music of Hunter Johnson and Robert Palmer, professors of Monaco's at Cornell University. Later style characteristics are discussed in a chapter which examines the Divertimento for Brass Quintet (1977), the Duo for Trumpet and Piano (1982), and the Second Sonata for Trombone and Piano (1985). The two sonatas for trombone are compared stylistically and for their position of importance in the composer's total output. The program included a performance of both sonatas in their entirety.

Richards, Ryan Roy. "Movement of Scaphirhynchus species in the Missouri River above Fort Peck Reservoir, Montana." Thesis, Montana State University, 2011. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2011/richards/RichardsR1211.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Some Scaphirhynchus spp. populations are endangered, in decline or extirpated. Operation of dams and reservoirs on the Missouri River has been implicated in declines in Scaphirhynchus spp. abundance. It is hypothesized that discharge from dams upstream of Scaphirhynchus spp. populations are insufficient to provide the environmental cue initiating spawning migrations. The goal of this thesis was to investigate the effects of variations in spring discharge on movements of Scaphirhynchus spp. in the Missouri River above Fort Peck Reservoir. A secondary goal was to provide information on the distribution of Scaphirhynchus spp. locations relative to larval drift distance. Twenty-four hatchery-reared juvenile pallid sturgeon, seven adult pallid sturgeon, and 192 shovelnose sturgeon were tracked from 2006 through 2009 and movements were compared among years with hydrologic conditions from above to below average discharge. Seventy-eight shovelnose sturgeon in five reproductive categories (i.e., males, confirmed spawning females, potentially spawning females, atretic females, and reproductively inactive females) were tracked in 2008 and 2009. Movements were compared among all reproductive categories within years and between years for confirmed spawning females while integrating the environmental effects of discharge and water temperature. The majority of pallid sturgeon locations in all years were within 75 km of the headwaters of Fort Peck Reservoir. Shovelnose sturgeon locations were distributed across the entire study reach, and were 100 km further upstream than pallid sturgeon locations. Based on current estimates, an insufficient length of river exists upstream of the Fort Peck Reservoir headwaters for pallid sturgeon larval drift. Movement rates of Scaphirhynchus spp. did not differ among years 2006-2009, and movements did not differ between years for confirmed spawning female shovelnose sturgeon 2008-2009, indicating that discharge did not influence movements. At the conditions in this study, movement rates of confirmed spawning female shovelnose sturgeon were highest at water temperatures suitable for spawning regardless of discharge, providing support for the hypothesis that water temperature rather than discharge is a more likely proximate cue initiating spawning migrations in Scaphirhynchus spp.

Abstract:

This essay discusses and criticizes Richard Swinburne's inductive argument for the existence of God. In his The Existence of God, Swinburne aims at showing that the existence of God is more probable than not. This is an argument taking into consideration the premises of all traditional arguments for the existence of God. Swinburne uses the phenomena and events that constitute the premises of these arguments as evidence in an attempt to show that his hypothesis is more probably true than nor. Swinburne pursues this task by way of applying Bayes' theorem. The aim of this essay is normative - to judge the strength of Swinburne's argument for the existence of God. My primary objections towards Swinburne is that he professes a subjective concept of probability, that he relies too heavily on simplicity as a virtue of plausible and probable hypotheses and that his concept of God involves an incoherent picture of God's nature. I question not only the actual success of Swinburne's project but what his argument, if it had been successful, would have been able to establish.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I seek to undermine the enduring myth that Richard Nixon lost the 1960 televised presidential debates because of John F. Kennedy’s superior looks and overall glamour. Although I do concede that Nixon lost the debates overall, I argue that Nixon gave his best performance in the third debate. Using Nixon’s third debate strategy as a victory paradigm, I show how Nixon could have bested Kennedy in the other debates.

Coetzee, Pieter Hendrik. "Form and substance in R.M. Hare's utilitarianism." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002836.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout his career as moral philosopher Hare has insisted that there is a rational way of arriving at substantive moral judgements. Hare develops this view - first presented in ' The language of morals' (1952) and ' Universalizability' (1955) - into the claim that rational agents are required to adopt utilitarian solutions to moral disputes. In ' Freedom and reason ' (1963) this claim is defended with reference to the view that the formal features of moral language (universalizability and prescriptivity)commit moral agents to a certain method of reasoning, and that this method of reasoning, when conjoined with facts about people's desires and preferences, leads us to accept substantive moral judgements consistent with those required by a form of utilitarianism. This view features throughout Hare's subsequent work, but the argument for it undergoes change. This means change in the defence of the claim that the meta-theory Universal Prescriptivism is consistent with a form of normative utilitarian theory, as this claim is argued for in 'Ethical theory and utilitarianism' (1976) and 'Moral Thinking' (1981). I shall endeavour to trace the chronological development of Hare's thinking, and will concentrate on developments in the argument for a theory of act-utilitarianism. I shall argue that the argument for utilitarianism gives rise to two major problems which arise from a specific feature of the argument, namely, the attempt to run the resolution of bi-lateral and multi-lateral cases of conflict along lines analogous to the resolution of conflict in the single-person case. Hare's argument requires that a decision-maker must identify the person with whom he reverses roles as himself, and that he must be prepared to concede that the things his recipient has good reasons for wanting are also reasons for him to want the same things. I argue that it is not possible to make coherent sense of the identity of the person in the reversed-role situation and that the motivational states a decision -maker is expected to deem 'his own' are not properly states of himself. If I am right, the 'identity'-question sits at the root of a motivational gap in Hare's theory.

Wightman, Ian. "The landscapes of Richard Long : perspectives on prehistory, space and sculptural form." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2405.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between the work of Richard Long and prehistory. This is understood to operate at two levels. Firstly, Long's critical reception has repeatedly made connections between his work and prehistory, many of which are overly simplistic. Secondly, and underlying this response, it is proposed that we can point to a more productive understanding of Long's practice which frames his work within the concept of existential space. At this level of enquiry, more appropriate connections with prehistory can be made which help to explain both his working practice and the critical reactions to it. Chapter I, 'Introduction to Methodology', describes aims and objectives and locates the analyses in relation to the theoretical positions which are to be taken. Chapter II, 'Walking the Line: From Abstraction to Reality', establishes the trajectory of the research through an analysis of two contextual frameworks (20th century British art and prehistory and Land Art and prehistory) and identifies Long's practice with regards to specific transitions in sculptural activity. Chapter III, 'Mapping the Field of Possibilities: An Analytical Reading of the Critical Discourse', examines interpretative tendencies within Long's critical reception. It defines the extent and nature of his work's perceived correspondence with the ancient past and exposes certain phenomenological perspectives as a means for formulating further analyses. Chapter IV, 'Where the Walk Meets the Place: Archaeology and Technologies of the Self', reveals the role Long's art plays within archaeological discourse as a means for understanding megalithic monuments and correlates his practice with some philosophical approaches employed in archaeology. Chapter V, 'The Architecture of Sculpture: Existential Space and Being-in-the-World', furthers the concerns of earlier chapters by analysing Long's art through the concept of existential space to describe its spatial operation in the environment. This translates Long's landscape sculptures from abstract art into perceptual schemata, implicating them in the assimilation of environments. This has particular consequences for his art: by demonstrating its sculptural significance to the structuration of space, it offers the work as an equivalent to prehistoric structures. Chapter VI, 'Conclusion'.

Bao, Xuezhong, and Xuezhong Bao. "Mesh design for numerical solution of Richards' Equation." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/626921.

Full text
Abstract:
Richards' equation is difficult to solve numerically because water flow in the unsaturated zone is complicated by the fact that the soil's permeability depends on its water saturation. The accuracy and computational efficiency of numerical solution are affected by the form of the governing equation, the estimation of the internodal hydraulic conductivity and the time-stepping scheme. In order to save computational time and improve efficiency of numerical techniques, two classical dimensionless numbers, Peclet and Courant numbers, and their combinations, Fourier and Advective Peclet numbers, are used as the criteria for estimating the spatial and temporal increments needed for the numerical solution of the linear Richards' equation (for example expo_nential hydraulic functions) and two new dimensi_onless numbers, Modified Peclet and Courant numbers for the non-linear Richards' equation (van Genuchten's hydraulic functions). In this way, we can get numerical solutions of Richards' equation not only with no oscillation and mass conservation, but also with adequate convergency speed and accuracy. These numbers are only related to the soil-hydraulic properties and grid size.

BAILEY, SHAD CULVERWELL. "HARMONY AND TONALITY IN THE FOUR WORKS FOR MIXED WIND INSTRUMENTS OF RICHARD STRAUSS (GERMANY)." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/183938.

Full text
Abstract:
Richard Strauss was only nineteen when he wrote the Serenade and soon the Suite was among his list of compositions. Not until he was nearing the end of his life did he again turn his attention to wind music with the Sonatine and the Symphonie. This paper provides a comparison of sonorities, root movement and representative harmonic progressions, cadences, harmonic rhythm, treatment of dissonances, keys employed, and modulation types in the four works. Its purpose is to determine how works from the years between the Suite and Sonatine may have affected the above parameters in the Sonatine and Symphonie. Included in the intervening years are such works as Elektra, Salome, and others during which time Strauss was most innovative in his use of sonorities, dissonances, and harmonic progressions. This study proves that in later compositions for wind instruments, Strauss did not continue the advances he had made earlier; rather he looked back to the language of the Serenade and Suite. The importance of major and minor triads, and the major-minor seventh remained in the Sonatine and Symphonie; beat duration totals for these three sonorities for the Serenade and Symphonie shows a less than one percent difference between the two works. Although there is less emphasis placed on ascending perfect fourth root movement in the Symphonie than in the other works, it still retains nearly one-fourth the total number. Authentic cadences have a higher percentage in the later Sonatine and Symphonie than in either of the two earlier compositions. Dissonance treatment favors conservative means; passing tones, neighbor tones, leap up-step down and leap down-step up appoggiaturas, suspensions and retardations are most common regardless of time-frame. Regarding modulations: although the widest variety is found in the Symphonie, emphasis is on diatonic and chromatic pivot chords, third relation, and enharmonic diminished seventh chords. One must conclude from the study that conservatism is the hallmark in each of the four compositions.

Jahn, Jeffry Allen. "Richard Wagner's ''Occasional Works'' for male chorus (1843-1844): Aspects and influences on Wagner's emerging compositional style during the Dresden years (1843-1849)." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185334.

Full text
Abstract:
Richard Wagner was appointed Hofkapellmeister to the Dresden Court in 1841. In conjunction with the duties of his office, he composed four works for male chorus, categorized by him as "occasional works". These works written during the first year-and-a-half of his Dresden tenure demonstrate Wagner's early assimilation of his artistic and philosophical ideals that would culminate in the composition of the opera-cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen. Wagner's association with the male-voice choral unions of Dresden allowed him opportunity to express and define his compositional goals in his constant quest for a true and pure German art form. The "occasional works" influenced and affected his use of male chorus in the operas Lohengrin, Tannhauser and Die Meistersinger. Wagner, forced to flee Dresden after the May 1849 uprising, no longer had access to the Dresden male-voice choral unions. Consequently, the frequency of male choruses in his operas composed after this time diminishes assuming a different position, both musically and dramatically than in those operas composed prior to and during his Dresden tenure. The "occasional works" demonstrate more than a servial obligation, rather, they encapsulate the very essence of Wagner's compositional thought in a highly condensed and intensely focused form.
