Abstract:
A new ecclesiasticus species group in the genus Typhlodromus Scheuten is proposed. The group is characterized primarily by the presence of seta z6 on the podoscutum and setae S2, S4, and S5 on the opisthoscutum. It is composed of 17 species: T. sentus Pritchard and Baker, T. neosentus van der Merwe, T. acanthus van der Merwe, T. sennarensis El Badry, T. parva (Matthysse and Denmark) comb, nov., T. kuzini (Wainstein), T. relenta (Matthysse and Denmark) comb, nov., T. ecclesiasticus De Leon, T. scytinus Chazeau, T. prunusus van der Merwe, T. yokogawae Ehara and Hamaoka, T. operantis (Chaudhri) comb, nov.,T. loricatus (Wainstein) comb, nov., T. bregetovae (Wainstein and Beglyarov) comb, nov., T. neosoleiger Gupta, T. ignavus (Chaudhri) comb, nov., and T. niloticus El Badry. Typhlodromus vitreus (Chaudhri) comb. nov. is designated as a junior synonym of T. bregetovae. Two species, T. ignavus and T. niloticus, are designated as "species inquirendae" because of insufficient information on their characteristics. Various generic concepts relating to the species in this group are reviewed. The group is described and a key to adult females and descriptions of each species are provided.

Full text
Abstract:
This article investigates the contribution by artist Jan van der Merwe to the project known as the “Creative creatures”. The project, initiated by Franci Greyling and Ian Marley, was based on the descriptions of a collection of fantastic creatures as relayed by Marley’s five year-old son, Joshua. Van der Merwe opted to design a special set of glasses for each of the creatures, and these works are discussed within the broader context of mirth in art. In order to explicate the term “mirth”, a brief art-historical survey is done with reference to key figures such as Bosch, Bruegel and others. The role of scary creatures in art is contextualised by comparing the work done by the stonemasons of the Gothic period with those of Van der Merwe done for the “Creative creatures” project. Throughout the article mirth as a personal function of art is discussed by interpreting the creative role of selected artists and their works. In conclusion it is suggested that the engagement with (scary) visual art should be enjoyed as a reciprocal event akin to a game – a game in which the mirthful characteristics of the work of art should be seen as a function to be savoured.

Abstract:
The southem African tree, Dahlgrenodendron natalense, previously ascribed to the genus Beilschmiedia was recently segregated as a monotypic genus, Dahlgrenodendron, on account of its distinctive exomorphology, palynology and fruit structure. Dahlgrenodendron differs from Beilschmiedia in nearly all quantitative and qualitative features of wood and bark anatomy. The overall structural pattern of these tissues does not support the initial assignment of Dahlgrenodendron to the tribe Cryptocaryeae, nor does it fit any other lauraceous taxon. Within Lauraceae, an isolated non-aligned status is provisionally proposed for the genus.

Abstract:
In the final years of legal apartheid, the small community of Quakers in Cape Town, South Africa sought to apply their tradition of political and theological nonviolence to the systematic injustice of their social context. Drawing on archival evidence, this article examines the writings of Hendrik W van der Merwe, a prominent white Afrikaner sociologist, activist, and Quaker. I argue that van der Merwe developed an unusual account of Quaker pacifism that cast nonviolence in terms of engaged mediation rather than civil resistance or critique, and I demonstrate how this ethical and political position required a specific conceptualization of “violence” as an idea in order for its account of peacemaking to be intelligible as an interpretation of that Quaker tradition. The study of the development of van der Merwe's ideas has a twofold significance: it uncovers a form of anti-violence politics that has been widely neglected within political theories of nonviolence and pacifism, and it illuminates the concrete political stakes of ongoing debates about “narrow” and “wide” definitions of violence.

Abstract:
There can be no doubt that isotopic studies have made a huge contribution to archaeology in recent years, so much so that isotope archaeology is now seen as an essential subdiscipline of archaeology in much the same way as isotope geochemistry is a key subdiscipline of geochemistry. Ignoring for current purposes the contribution made by the measurement of a particular radioactive isotope of carbon (14C) since 1950, we can date the beginnings of isotope archaeology to the mid 1960s with the first measurements of lead isotopes in archaeological metals and slags by Brill and Wampler (1965, 1967). This was followed by carbon stable isotopes in human bone collagen in the late 1970s, building on previous work measuring σ13C in archaeological bone for radiocarbon determinations (Vogel & Van der Merwe 1977; Van der Merwe & Vogel 1978). Other isotopes followed rapidly, such as nitrogen, oxygen, sulphur and hydrogen for archaeological, palaeoecological or palaeoclimatological purposes and, more recently, the heavier radiogenic isotopes of strontium and neodymium for determining the provenance of organic and inorganic materials (Pollard & Heron 2008).

Abstract:
Voice rest is often prescribed after the surgical removal of benign vocal fold lesions. Adherence to voice rest recommendations and recovery from phonomicrosurgery present unique challenges to patients and clinicians. The purpose of this article was to summarize what is currently known about adherence to voice rest, the impact of voice rest on patient-reported quality of life, and the potential role of personality in adherence to treatment recommendations. Voice rest is a form of vocal hygiene treatment that is aimed at improving laryngeal health and function (Thomas & Stemple, 2007). There are primarily two types of voice rest protocols used in the postoperative management of patients. Absolute voice rest involves the complete cessation of voice use for a specified time period. In contrast, relative voice rest involves a significant decrease and/or modification in the habitual pattern of voice use (Thomas & Stemple, 2007; van der Merwe, 2004). Otolaryngologists frequently recommend voice rest following microlaryngoscopic surgery for benign vocal fold lesions (van der Merwe, 2004). Unlike some other forms of voice therapy, voice rest is considered to be a primarily preventative and hygienic approach in the management of dysphonia. The primary rationale for conserving the voice is to substantially reduce the amount of vocal fold vibration to facilitate repair and reduce the risk of postsurgical scarring (Behrman & Sulica, 2003; Ishikawa & Thibeault, 2010).

Section 18(b) of the Matrimonial Property Act 88 of 1984 allows for non-patrimonial damages to be claimed by a spouse married in community of property against his/her spouse. In Van der Merwe v Road Accident Fund 2006 4 SA 230 (CC) the court extended this exception to the notional purity of community of property to include patrimonial damages on the basis that section 18(b) discriminated unfairly against spouses married in community of property vis-à-vis spouses married out of community. The implications of this decision on commercial intercourse are discussed in this contribution against the background of prior decisions relating to the insolvency of spouses married in community of property.

J. van der Merwe (1969) obtained 14C measurements on 11 iron pieces, ranging in carbon content from medium carbon (0.22%) wrought iron (1.2 kg used) to high carbon (3.2%) cast iron (30 g), thereby demonstrating the feasibility of the technique for 14C dating iron. In the early 1980s, Sayre et al. (1982) repeated two of van der Merwe's measurements, and carried out two analyses on a recently rediscovered Elizabethan(?) iron bloom. Thirty grams were required of this medium carbon wrought iron to obtain an age using small proportional counters. A number of iron artifacts have recently been analyzed by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) at IsoTrace. Samples ranged in size from 3.4 g of a medium carbon (≃0.4%) wrought iron bloom to 274 mg for a high carbon (1.79%) wootz steel fragment. AMS now permits analysis of samples that previously were too small or too valuable to be analyzed. For larger samples, multiple analyses can reveal variations that may aid the evaluation of sample history.

Abstract:
The dramatic didascalies revisited The concept of dramatic didascalies has received little theoretical attention in South Africa. Mouton (1989:166-195) included a chapter on the topic in her published doctoral thesis and Van der Merwe (1992) completed a master’s thesis on the didascalies as sign-system in dramas by M.S. Serudu. Both theses draw on an article by Savona (1982), in which virtually no attention is paid to the etymological influence of the word on the general meanings and interpretations attached to it. Consequently, the purpose of this article is to trace the correspondences between the historical background of the word "didascalies" and its applications to dramatic theory and practice. Historically it is possible to distinguish two main groups of literary didascalies in the published text of a play. Direct didascalies derive from the playwright, but indirect didascalies are supplied by someone else.

Abstract:
This article analyses Neill Blomkamp's Academy Award-winning District 9 (2009) to investigate the extent to which popular cinema might support neoliberal ideological positions. It draws upon Slavoj Žižek's psychoanalytic theory of ideology to explore how far anti-capitalist and anti-colonial tendencies in the film should be regarded as an “unconscious fantasy” (1989, p.30) that works towards reinforcing key aspects of neoliberalism. Through an exploration of private military contractor Multinational United (MNU), lead protagonist Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley), and the film's spatial composition, this article argues that District 9 works in support of neoliberalism by constructing a social reality that sidesteps genuine criticisms of neoliberalism's role in continued socio-economic marginalisation and ongoing human suffering. This is evident in hollow criticisms of corporate capitalism vis-à-vis MNU and ignorant misrepresentations of the alien Other, which reinforce discourses of cultural and ethnic superiority associated with neoliberalism.

Abstract:
This note argues that the Adjudicator’s determination Hlathi should be welcomed by the pension funds industry because it clarifies the uncertain legal position that emerged in the wake of the judgment in Volks. It comments on the requirements in and implications of Hlathi for the pension funds industry and pension beneficiaries, and criticises the Adjudicator's determination as failing to expressly incorporate the emotional and intimate or sexual bond requirement in the new factual dependency test. It argues that while Hlathi appears to have reverted to the legal position that prevailed prior to Van der Merwe, the new test does not expressly incorporate the relevant requirement that a relationship of mutual dependence involves an emotional and intimate or sexual bond. As a result, the note is critical of this omission because it creates a potentially new uncertainty in the law, and calls on the current Adjudicator to clarify this matter.
