We define the overconvergent de Rham-Witt complex ... for a smooth affine variety over a perfect field in characteristic p. We show that, after tensoring with Q, its cohomology agrees with Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology. If dim C < p, we have an isomorphism integrally. One advantage of our construction is that it does not involve a choice of lift to characteristic zero. To prove that the cohomology groups are the same, we first define a comparison map ... (See Section 4.1 for the notation.) We cover our smooth affine C with affines B each of which is finite, tale over a localization of a polynomial algebra. For these particular affines, we decompose ... into an integral part and a fractional part and then show that the integral part is isomorphic to the Monsky-Washnitzer complex and that the fractional part is acyclic. We deduce our result from a homotopy argument and the fact that our complex is a Zariski sheaf with sheaf cohomology equal to zero in positive degrees. (For the latter, we lift the proof from [4] and include it as an appendix.) We end with two chapters featuring independent results. In the first, we reinterpret several rings from p-adic Hodge theory in such a way that they admit analogues which use big Witt vectors instead of p-typical Witt vectors. In this generalization we check that several familiar properties continue to be valid. In the second, we offer a proof that the Frobenius map on W(...) is not surjective for p > 2.

Abstract:
We begin by defining De Rhams classical cohomology and we prove some results that allow us a calculation of the cohomology of some differentiable manifolds. In order to prove De Rhams Theorem, we chose to make a demonstration using a notion of sheaves, which is a generalization of the idea of cohomology. Since De Rhams cohomology is not a only one that can be made into a variety, the question of unicity gives rise to axiomatic theory of sheaves, which give us a cohomology for each sheaf given. We will show that from the axiomatic theory of sheaves we obtain cohomologies, besides the classical cohomologies of De Rham, a singular classical cohomology and a classical cohomology of Cech and we will show that cohomologies are obtained from the axiomatic notion are classic definitions. We will conclude that if we restrict ourselves to only differentiable manifolds, these cohomologies are uniquely isomorphic and this will be De Rhams theorem.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to describe a construction of semi-infinite de Rham cohomology for infinite dimensional manifolds equipped with the extra structure of a polarisation. We describe the construction for finite dimensions and show how it extends to other cases; in particular the semi-infinite. We then define variations for Hilbert manifolds which allow us to calculate the semi-infinite cohomology of the projective space and the Grassmannians of a polarised Hilbert space. Finally, we consider some of the implications of these results for index theory, in particular for the Witten genus.

Abstract:
Under a few assumptions, we prove an equivalence of category between a subcategory of F-isocristals on a smooth algebraic variety and overcongergent integrable De Rham-Witt connections. We do so by giving an equivalent definition of overconvergence, and by studying the explicit local structure of the De Rham-Witt complex

Abstract:
Innate immunity is the first line of defense against invading pathogens. It functions to eliminate pathogens and also to control infections. The innate immune response is also important for the development of pathogen-specific adaptive immune responses. As a result, the study of innate immune signaling pathways is crucial for understanding the interactions between host and pathogen. Unlike mammals, insects lack a classical adaptive immune response and rely mostly on innate immune responses. Innate immune mechanisms have been widely studied in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. The genetic and molecular tools available in the Drosophila system make it an excellent model system for studying immunity. Furthermore, the innate immune signaling pathways used by Drosophila show strong homology to those of vertebrates making them ideal for studying these pathways. Drosophila immunity relies on cellular and humoral innate immune responses to fight pathogens. The hallmark of the Drosophilahumoral immune response is the rapid induction of antimicrobial peptide genes in the fat body. The production of these antimicrobial peptides is regulated by two immune signaling pathways-Toll and Immune Deficency (IMD) pathways. The Toll pathway responds to many Gram-positive bacterial and fungal infections , while the IMD pathway is potently activated by DAP-type peptidoglycan (PGN) from Gram-negative bacteria and certain Gram-positive bacteria. Two receptors, PGRP-LC and PGRP-LE, are able to recognize DAP-type PGN at the cell surface or in the cytosol, respectively, and trigger the IMD pathway. Upon binding DAP-type PGN, both PGRP-LC and PGRP-LE dimerize/ multimerize and signal to the downstream components of IMD pathway. It is unclear how the receptor activates its downstream components. My work has focused on understanding the molecular events that take place at the receptors following there activation. In these studies I have identified a common motif in the N-terminal domains of both the receptors, known as the RHIM-like domain. The RHIM-like domain is critical for signaling by either receptor, but the mechanism(s) involved remain unclear. IMD, a downstream component of the pathway, associates with both PGRP-LC and -LE but the interaction of PGRP-LC with IMD is not mediated through its RHIM-like domain. Also, mutations affecting the PGRP-LC RHIM-like motif are defective in all known downstream signaling events. However, the RHIM-like mutant receptors are capable of serving as a platform for the assembly of all known components of a receptor proximal signaling complex. These results suggest that another, unidentified component of the IMD signaling pathway may function to mediate interaction with the RHIM-like motif. I performed a yeast two-hybrid screen to identify proteins that might interact with the receptor PGRP-LC through its RHIM- like domain. With this approach, two new components of the IMD pathway were identified. The first component I characterized is called Rudra and it is a critical feedback inhibitor of peptidoglycan receptor signaling. The other factor is known as RYBP, it includes a highly conserved ubiquitin binding motif (NZF), and RNAi studies suggest it is a critical component of the IMD pathway. The identification and characterization of these two new components of the IMD pathway has provided a new insight into the molecular events that take place proximal to the receptor.

Abstract:
(1+t^(2N-1)). Biinvariante Formen sind geschlossen
Consider one of the standard bicovariant first order differential calculi for the quantum groups GLq(N), SLq(N), SOq(N), or SPq(N), where q is a transcendental complex number. It is shown that the de Rham cohomology of Woronowicz' external algebra coincides with the de Rham cohomologies of its left-invariant, its right-invariant and its bi-invariant subcomplexes. In the cases GLq(N) and SLq(N), the cohomology ring is isomorphic to the left-invariant external algebra and to the vector space of harmonic forms. We prove a Hodge decomposition theorem in these cases. The main technical tool is the spectral decomposition of the quantum Laplace-Beltrami operator. As in the classical case all three spaces of differential forms coincide: bi- invariant forms, harmonic forms and the de-Rham-cohomology. For orthog- onal and symplectic quantum groups there is no complete Hodge decompo- sition. In case of the standard calculi on the quantum groups GLq(N) and SLq(N), the size of exterior algebra is computed. The space of left-invariant k-forms has dimension C(N², k) (binomial coefficient). The algebra of bi-invariant forms is graded commutative with Poincaré series (1+t)(1+t³) ... (1+t^(2N-1)). Bi-invariant forms are closed

Abstract:
This work is concerned with the lower part of the Eastern Layered Series (LELS) of Rhum, and with the marginal relationships of the ultrabasic complex in eastern Rhum. The Lower Eastern Layered Series comprises approximately Units 1-5 of previous workers. Remapping has revealed considerable along-strike lithological variation in the units of the L.E.L.S. It is suggested, on the basis of field and geochemical evidence, that two layers formerly regarded as 'conformable intrusive sheets of fine grained olivine gabbro' may be evolved allivalite layers rather than later intrusions. Xenolith suites in these layers and elsewhere, indicate a component derived from the roof or walls of the magma chamber. Cryptic variation is more extensive in the L.E.L.S. than in other parts of Rhum: olivine forsterite content varies from 85.6 to 70, and clinopyroxene MgX100/(Mg+Fe) varies from 88 to 74. Post-cumulus effects and sub-solidus re-equilibration have altered the initial compositions of the mineral phases. The migration of interstitial liquids has had a major effect on mineral chemistry. Replacement of plagioclase-rich rocks by peridotite is a significant process in parts of the sequence. This is ascribed to disequilibrium between migrating pore liquids and plagioclase. The data are consistent with a model of repeated replenishment by picritic magma, although the replenishing liquids may have been slightly less magnesian than those subsequently available during the formation of the upper ELS. Re-examination of the eastern margin of the ultrabasic complex suggests that the ultrabasic rocks formed more or less in situ, and that fragments of the roof to the intrusion occur in places. Locally under these roof fragments variolitic olivine-rich gabbros are developed, which may represent the chilled margin to the ultrabasic complex.

Abstract:
Although current trends in global warming are of great concern, energy demand is still increasing, resulting in increasing pollutant emissions. To address this issue, we need reliable renewable energy sources, lowered pollutant emissions, and efficient and profitable processes for energy conversion. We also need to improve the use of the energy, produced by existing infrastructure. Consequently, the work presented in this thesis aims at investigating current scientific and technological challenges in energy conversion through biomass gasification and the alternative use of fossil fuels, such as diesel, in the generation of cleaner electricity through auxiliary power units in the transport sector. Production of chemicals, syngas, and renewable fuels is highly dependent on the development and innovation of catalytic processes within these applications. This thesis focuses on the development and optimization of catalytic technologies in these areas. One of the limitations in the commercialization of the biomass gasification technology is the effective catalytic conversion of tars, formed during gasification. Biomass contains high amounts of alkali impurities, which pass on to the producer gas. Therefore, a new material with alkali tolerance is needed. In the scope of this thesis, a new catalyst support, KxWO3 – ZrO2 with high alkali resistance was developed. The dynamic capability of KxWO3 – ZrO2 to store alkali metals in the crystal structure, enhances the capture of alkali metals "in situ". Alkali metals are also important electronic promoters for the active phase, which usually increases the catalysts activity and selectivity for certain products. Experimental results show that conversion of 1-methylnaphathalene over Ni/KxWO3 – ZrO2 increases in the presence of 2 ppm of gas-phase K (Paper I). This support is considered to contribute to the electronic equilibrium within the metal/support interface, when certain amounts of alkali metals are present. The potential use of this support can be extended to applications in which alkali "storage-release" properties are required, i.e. processes with high alkali content in the process flow, to enhance catalyst lifetime and regeneration. In addition, fundamental studies to understand the adsorption geometry of naphthalene with increasing temperature were performed in a single crystal of Ni(111) by STM analyses. Chapter 9 presents preliminary studies on the adsorption geometry of the molecule, as well as DFT calculations of the adsorption energy. In relation to the use of clean energy for transport applications, hydrogen generation through ATR for FC-APUs is presented in Papers II to V. Two promoted RhPt bimetallic catalysts were selected in a previous bench scale study, supported on La2O3:CeO2/d – Al2O3 and MgO : Y2O3/CeO2 – ZrO2. Catalyst evaluation was performed in a fullscale reformer under real operating conditions. Results showed increased catalyst activity after the second monolithic catalyst due to the effect of steam reforming, WGS reaction, and higher catalyst reducibility of the RhxOy species in the CeO2 – ZrO2 mixed oxide, as a result of the improved redox properties. The influence of sulfur and coke formation on diesel reforming was assessed after 40 h on stream. Sulfur poisoning was evaluated for the intrinsic activity related to the total Rh and Pt area observed after exposure to sulfur. Sulfur concentration in the aged catalyst washcoat was observed to decrease in the axial direction of the reformer. Estimations of the amount of sulfur adsorbed were found to be below the theoretical equilibrated coverage on Rh and Pt, thus showing a partial deactivation due to sulfur poisoning.

Abstract:
This thesis studies the construction of p-adic L-functions associated to motives over Q and, in particular, to modular forms. In the first three chapters we generalize some constructions of Perrin-Riou in order to construct, for any p-adic de Rham representation V of the absolute Galois group G_Qp of Qp (or, more generally, any de Rham (ϕ,Γ)-module over the Robba ring) and any compatible system of global elements, a p-adic L-function. We show, by the use of some reciprocity laws proved by Perrin-Riou, Colmez, Cherbonnier-Colmez, Berger and Nakamura, that these functions interpolate interesting arithmetic values at locally algebraic characters. The last three chapters deal with the particular case of dimension 2. We show, inspired by some techniques of Nakamura and certain weight change techniques introduced by Colmez for the study of locally algebraic vectors in the p-adic Langlads correspondence for GL₂(Qp), that our p-adic L-function satisfies a functional equation. As an application of our functional equation, we fulfil the missing arguments in the work of Nakamura, providing a complete proof of Kato's local ε-conjecture for 2-dimensional representations. For the motive associated to a modular form, we use these results to interpret the interpolated values of the p-adic L-function in terms of special values of the complex L-function of the form

In this report we give a brief description of holonomy groups of Riemannian manifolds and prove some technical results needed to guarentee the existence of a de Rham decomposition of a complete and simply connected Riemannian manifold. Such an existence constitutes itself as the core of a famous result on holonomy groups, they so-called de Rham's decomposition theorem, whose proof is our ultimate goal.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Over the last three decades, the rum undustry in Martinique has gone through a deep change which has, at various levels, affected its human, material, technical, economic and spatial components. When it got the "appellation contrôlée" in 1996, the agricultural Martinican rum became a reference. As a result, it can insist upon the specificities of its native soil, its geografic roots, and also upon the heritage of a tradition and a know-how which is wholly codified today by the AOC legislation. This seal of quality turns an ordinary colonial produce into a special, high standard liquor, which confers to Martinique, formerly "sugar island", then "rum island", a new status based on the specificity and quality of its rum production. Today, the rum industry is at the heart of a true cultural and economic dynamic wich can be expressed in three points: first, the rum production meets the demand insufficiently, second, some planters have returned to the cultivation of sugar cane to make up to the lack of raw material, third, the productions units are more performant and have also become recreational sites for the tourist and local population. Moreover, due to the important commercial flows generated by exports, the rum is confronted with the issues of globalisationand is in keeping with a system of space that fit on the local, national and international scale. Therefore, this research aims at studying what is at stake in the processes of qualification of agricultural rum, at determining the assets anconstraints of this specific label and at measuring its spatial and economic consequences at the various scale

Full text
Abstract:
Functional amyloids form a growing list of proteins that can adopt a fibrillar amyloid structure for functional purposes. In cell death signalling via necroptosis, the RIP kinases 1 (RIPK1) and 3 (RIPK3) interact to form hybrid amyloid assemblies via a protein-protein interaction motif, termed RIP-homotypic interaction motif (RHIM). RHIM sequences are ~18 residue long and contain a highly conserved tetrad sequence (V/I)-Q-(V/I/L/C)-G. The cytosolic nucleic acid sensor Z-DNA binding protein 1 (ZBP1) can also drive necroptosis via interaction with RIPK3, upon sensing of viral nucleic acid. Unlike other RHIM-containing proteins, ZBP1 contains three putative RHIM sequences. Although the first RHIM, termed RHIM-A, has been suggested to be most important for RHIM mediated interactions, the role of the multiple ZBP1 RHIMs has not been probed extensively. I have introduced tetra-alanine mutations into the tetrad sequences in the multiple RHIMs of ZBP1 in order to identify their role in functional amyloid assembly. Biophysical characterisation of the recombinantly produced mutant ZBP1 proteins reveals that mutation of the tetrad sequence of the ZBP1 RHIMs does not completely abrogate amyloid formation, although differences in the extent of amyloid formation are seen upon binding to the amyloid-specific dye Thioflavin T. Importantly, mutation of RHIM-A but not RHIM-B nor C dramatically alters the morphology of ZBP1 amyloid as visualised by transmission electron microscopy. RHIM-A mutants also form smaller amyloid assemblies than the wild type protein and other mutants and these can be easily depolymerised by detergent. Surprisingly, the RHIM-B and C mutant constructs display an increased propensity to form large assemblies that are resistant to depolymerisation, even more-so than the wild type protein. Altogether amyloid formation by ZBP1 RHIM in vitro echoes its cellular function where RHIM-A is vital for necroptosis-related protein-protein interactions, while RHIM-B tempers the activity of RHIM-A. I have also utilised the multiple ZBP1 RHIM mutant proteins to investigate a series of putative new amyloid reporter dyes and have outlined potential binders to the ZBP1 amyloid scaffold. In the second part of this thesis, I have investigated the viral RHIM containing protein ICP6, encoded by herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). Necroptosis is important for antiviral host defence but some viruses, including HSV 1, have evolved adaptations against this form of cell death. Investigation of recombinantly produced ICP6 RHIM reveals that it can form amyloid structures in vitro. This aligns with other work from the Sunde laboratory, which has shown that murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) encode the RHIM containing proteins M45 and ORF-20, respectively, which form amyloid structures in vitro and interact with host-RHIM containing proteins RIPK3, and ZBP1. Importantly, ICP6 RHIM amyloid is sensitive to a reducing milieu, a property not associated with other proteins of the RHIM family. Unlike M45 and ORF20, ICP6 does not form large homomeric amyloid assemblies, rather preferentially forms heteromeric assemblies with host RHIM proteins. Moreover, tetra alanine mutation of the ICP6 RHIM tetrad inhibits amyloid formation and disrupts its interaction with host-RHIM proteins. Characterisation of ICP6 RHIM revealed that an intra-molecular disulfide bond between Cys75 and Cys79 confers distinct amyloid characteristics not seen with previously characterised viral proteins M45 and ORF20. Formation of virus-host mixed amyloid may prevent host RHIM proteins from interacting and activating the downstream necroptosis cascade.

Abstract:
This Thesis focuses on the study of the catalytic production of hydrogen from a biofuel, namely the bioethanol. It also studies the subsequent purification of pre-cleaned reformate streams. The end use of the hydrogen produced is to feed fuel cells to power portable and mobile applications. In this Thesis, two types of catalysts have been developed. One consisting of RhPd/CeO2 catalysts aimed at generating hydrogen via the ethanol steam reforming. On the other hand, Au/TiO2 catalysts have been investigated to eliminate carbon monoxide from reformate streams. The developed catalysts have been tested under practical operational conditions. The developed catalysts have been characterized ex situ, in situ and under reaction conditions. The operando studies allowed for the investigation of the reorganization of the metals driven by the reactive atmosphere. Finally, the miniaturization of the hydrogen production and purification scale has been investigated. To achieve this goal, the developed catalysts have been implemented on microreactors composed of channels measuring only few microns.

Greenwood, Richard C. "Geology and petrology of the margin of the Rhum ultrabasic intrusion, Inner Hebrides, Scotland." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/7123.

Full text
Abstract:
Country rocks surrounding the Rhum Tertiary ultrabasic complex have experienced severe thermal metamorphism, partial melting and mobilization resulting in the formation of extensive areas of intrusion breccia. Evidence from several sources indicates a maximum temperature in the country rocks of 960 ± 40°C. Contrary to previous suggestions the complex was not emplaced as a fault block enclosed by a "Marginal Gabbro", but formed in situ at a depth of less than 1Km. Large-scale layering continues to within 2m of the country rocks, and shows no change in either thickness or orientation close to the contact. Smallscale layers at Harris Bay thin and terminate towards the contact with the Western Granophyre. Strontium isotope data showsthat the margins of the complex have experienced considerable crustal contamination. Contamination may have taken place by mixing of anatectic country rock melt with the resident basaltic liquid during boundary flow. Whole-rock and isotope geochemistry suggests that marginal microgranodiorite ("hybrid rocks") formed during a process of combined assimilation and fractional crystallization. Lead isotope data indicate that rocks of the ultrabasic complex, as well as earlier Tertiary granophres and felsites, were contaminated with Lewisian lead. The crustal level at which this took place and the processes involved remain unclear. Oxygen isotope analyses show that rocks of the contact zone have undergone large-scale exchange with heated, meteoric fluids. In response to inflation of the complex the country rocks experienced considerable deformation, and in places the chamber roof underwent gravity collapse. Deformation resulted in increased country rock permeability, thus enhancing hydrothermal circulation and promoting high-cooling rates along the contact zone. A consequence of this process is the local preservation of quenched ultrabasic material at Harris Bay, and the ubiquitous development of rapid growth textures in all lithologies within the contact zone.

Baker, Max Owen David Gus. "Tug-of-war: Characterising functional amyloid assemblies that trigger or terminate programmed cell death during viral infection." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/28074.

Full text
Abstract:
Functional amyloid is an increasingly recognised type of protein assembly that can serve diverse physiological purposes. Functional amyloid is distinct from disease associated amyloid, which plays important aetiological roles in a number of irreversible and degenerative human and animal pathologies. Functional amyloid is a high molecular weight β-sheet rich protein assembly characterised by fibrillar architecture, insolubility, resistance to protease degradation and high stability. An important functional amyloid complex employed by mammals is the necrosome, which is a multi-component higher-order signalling assembly that drives the programmed cell death pathway necroptosis. Necroptosis is a crucial part of the innate immune system and is directly implicated in defense against important human pathogens. Necroptosis is mediated by protein:protein interaction sequences called RHIMs (RIP Homotypic Interaction Motifs). Due to its importance in curtailing infection, necrosome components are targeted for inhibition by pathogens using a suite of immune-evasive strategies. This thesis describes the analysis of RHIM-containing necrosome components associated with cell death signalling and virus RHIM-driven mechanisms to subvert necrosome function. The work in this thesis is divided into three major sections. In the first section, analysis of the RHIM of TRIF, an innate immune adaptor protein that responds to ligation of Toll like receptors during pathogenic infection, was performed. It is known that when activated, TRIF associates with the kinases RIPK1 and RIPK3 through RHIM-based interactions. The interactions between TRIF and these two proteins can lead to activation of downstream cell death effectors that drive necroptosis. The work in this portion of the thesis describes elucidation of the biophysical characteristics of higher-order assemblies formed by the RHIM from TRIF. TRIF is shown to spontaneously self-assemble into amyloid assemblies with unique morphology dependent on the presence of the RHIM. The residues that comprise the insoluble amyloid core of TRIF were determined by protease digestion and mass spectrometry. Single molecule confocal coincidence spectroscopy was used to demonstrate direct interactions between TRIF and RIPK3 and/or RIPK1. The size and stability of these hetero-assemblies were investigated. In the second section, a novel mechanism of inhibition of amyloid-driven cell death is described for Varicella Zoster virus, a medically important pathogenic herpesvirus. Herpesviruses can encode proteins that contain RHIM sequences. These virus RHIM sequences mediate protein:protein interactions with human RHIM-containing proteins, leading to human:virus protein hetero-assemblies that render the human proteins unable to signal for programmed cell death, which would otherwise destroy infected cells. A novel virus RHIM is described that is present in the Varicella Zoster virus protein ORF20. The RHIM from ORF20 is shown to be crucial for its infectivity. It is demonstrated that the RHIM from ORF20 is amyloidogenic, like other human and virus RHIMs. ORF20 can interact with the human cell death-associated proteins ZBP1, a nucleic acid sensor that directly responds to cytoplasmic viral ligands, and RIPK3. Interactions between ORF20 and ZBP1 result in the formation of hetero-assemblies that are larger and more stable and have morphology distinct from ZBP1 homo assemblies. These alterations in ZBP1 assembly properties are proposed to underlie the subversion of ZBP1 signalling that occurs during VZV infection. In the third section, efforts are described to use fluorescent microscopy to detect amyloid necrosomes in cell culture. Despite the growing understanding of functional amyloid in many aspects of biology, there has been limited visualisation of functional amyloid within cells by common microscopy techniques. In particular, no fluorescent microscopy of endogenous RHIM-containing proteins in their amyloid state has been reported. In this project, iterative attempts to image both the identity and amyloid structure of the RIPK1 in the necrosome were performed. These experiments were performed with amyloid staining dyes including Thioflavin T and Thioflavin S, novel amyloid-specific antibodies OC and A11, and protein-specific antibodies for the necroptosis-associated proteins RIPK1 and MLKL. Ultimately, A11 was identified as a potentially useful probe for the detection of endogenous amyloid necrosomes. Overall, the work in this thesis describes multiple aspects of functional amyloid associated with programmed cell death. Structural characterisation of cell death complexes is described in both physiological and pathological settings which are fundamental for understanding the molecular nature of innate immune signalling.

Abstract:

A screened GPM approach in an EMTO-CPA framework was investigated in order to study its ability of describing transition temperatures in phase separating systems, i. e. systems giving either a random or a cluster structure depending on the temperature and the relative concentration of the ingoing atoms of the binary alloy used for the study. A motivation for the study is that the method works well for ordering systems, i. e. systems giving either a random or ordered structure dependent on the temperature and the relative concentration of the components in the binary alloy. Thereby is it of interest to find out the methods capacity in phase separating systems. The so called GPM potentials derived in the approach were applied in statistical Monte Carlo simulations for this purpose. The systems chosen for the investigation were the RhPd and the AlZn binary alloy systems. For both systems the method showed acceptable accuracy when properties as lattice parameter and mixing enthalpy were calculated. The quality of the derived GPM potentials has also been checked by calculating ordering energy for different ordered structures; directly from first principles calculations and from the GPM approach. The results were in acceptable agreement and thereby indicating that the GPM potentials were reliable. The transition temperatures in the RhPd phase diagram, derived by the statistical Monte Carlo simulations showed anyway deviation from experimental results. The error in the predictions might be due to the existing concentration dependencies in the GPM potentials. The conclusion from this study is that the Monte Carlo scheme might be inconvenient in order to handle the concentration dependencies seen in the GPM potentials.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The study of stategies of the martiniquan sugar firms between 1919 and 1939 shows : 1_) in a situation where demand for sugar and alcohol is determined closely by the fluctuations of french needs, the production of martiniquan factories had been encouraged during the 1920's, but the sluggishness had persisted throughout the 1930's. Then some producers chosed to develop their activity while others were adopting a waiting strategy. 2_) the originality of this thesis is the analysis of accounting documents of 5 sugar firms. We notice at the opposite of several studies, firstly that the amounts of salaries and wages are very low, and secoundly the capital expenditures realised during this period is the minimum to retain the facilities. The main winners of the sugar profit were the government (through the tax policy) and the shareholdres of the firms

Abstract:
This thesis has two main parts. The first one deals with the study of the boundedness on Lp of the Riesz transform d∆-½ , where ∆ denotes the nonnegative Laplace-Beltrami operator. The second one deals with the Sobolev regularity W1,p of the solution of the heat equation. We also establish some results on the Riesz transforms of Schrödinger operators with a potential possibly having a negative part. In this work, we consider a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold (M, g). We assume that M satisfies the volume doubling property (with doubling constant equal to D) as well as a Gaussian upper estimate for its heat kernel associated to the operator ∆. We work with the Hodge-de Rham Laplacian ∆, acting on 1-differential forms of M. With the Bochner formula, linking ∆to the Ricci curvature of M, we see ∆ has a vector-valued Schrödinger operator. It is a duality argument, based on a commutation formula, which links the study of ∆to the one of ∆. [...]

The objective of this study was to compare bone augmentation in the anterior maxilla following implantation of rhBMP2/ACS vs. autogenous bone graft. In this study, 24 patients were selected and equally randomized into 2 groups: Group 1 - rhBMP2/ACS or Group 2 - intraoral particulated autogenous bone graft. A titanium mesh was used for space provision in both Groups. Average clinical bone gain, histological/histomorphometrical (core biopsy obtained at 6 month), CBCT (preoperative, 3 and 6 months follow-up) and real time PCR (new bone scraped at 6 months) were used as evaluation methods. Clinical healing was generally uneventful. Mean clinical ridge width increased 3.2±0.9 vs. 3.7±2.1 mm (p=0.31) for Group 1 and Group 2, respectively. Group 1 yielded statistically significant CBCT bone gain only at subcrestal level compared with Group 2 (1.5±0.7 vs. 0.5±0.9mm; p=0.01). In the histological analysis, specimens from group 1 showed bone marrow significant richer in cells and capillaries (p=0.002) than Group 2, however no difference was found in other parameters. Real time PCR showed higher expression of genes BMP2 and Runx2 in Group 1 (p=0,001 e p=0,0021, respectively) and RANKL:OPG, BSP and OPN in Group 2 (p=0,01, p=0,005 and p=0,0009, respectively). A total of 62 implants were installed after 6 months. In conclusion, Group 1 supported clinically and tomographically relevant alveolar ridge augmentation of comparable magnitude to Group 2, presenting more favorable histological and gene expression results, suggesting an alternative for autogenous bone graft.

Abstract:
We fix a complete field k with respect to a non-Archimedean absolute value. In Chapter 1, we build the overconvergent function algebra U to be the subalgebra of the Tate algebra by putting a growth condition on the coefficients of the power series using a decreasing function which we call a filter function (satisfying certain conditions). With this setting we prove the following result: U is a Noetherian, Jacobson, unique factorization domain and it is complete with respect to the norm on it, moreover every ideal of U is closed with respect to the induced topology. In Chapter 2, we define a category of NMK-algebras as the category of all quotients of U. Working in the larger category of Frèchet spaces, we establish Noether normalization and investigate the morphisms between NMK-algebras. Finally, we show that the category of NMK-algebras is closed under completed tensor products. We investigate certain geometric aspects of the algebra U in Chapter 3, such as the properties of maximal ideals and regularity of U. Further, we show that for each U the associated algebraic de Rham complex is exact in positive degrees.
