Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines how the East India Company's 1856 annexation of the Indian Kingdom of Awadh informed British Conservative responses to the Indian Revolt in 1857 and 1858. Addressing scholarship on Britain's reaction to the revolt and political engagement with Indian empire, this study reveals that Conservatives interpreted this event with a veneration for locality and prescription. Criticism from company officials and Awadh's deposed royal family informed Conservative perceptions that British exploitation and westernization were responsible for military rebellion and popular upheaval. Principally, this reflected Conservative skepticism regarding liberal modernity as well as support for prescribed aristocratic, propertied, and established church interests in Britain. Their response, expressed in Parliament and supported in conservative periodicals, was the 1858 Queen's Proclamation authored by Edward Smith-Stanley, the 14th Earl of Derby's Conservative government. The proclamation established a lasting imperial framework which defined the crown's obligation to uphold India's political, social, and cultural differences and separation from Britain. Future Conservatives strengthened British views of India's distinctiveness by supporting perceived traditional leaders and customs over uniform western administration and education.

Abstract:
This article challenges the myth that Indian nationalism was a major cause of the Rebellion or Uprising of 1857, arguing rather that nationalism was its ultimate result. But it goes much further, demonstrating that this unsuccessful Uprising of 1857 generated a new consciousness, as it taught Indians about the need to learn to protect and represent themselves better. While the East India Company (EIC) swiftly regained control and transferred sovereignty to the British Crown on 1 November 1858, tightening the noose of colonial subjugation for almost another century, the article argues that significant loss of trust in the feudal lords in 1857 opened the door to a new form of consciousness about the need for more competence in self-rule. The analysis suggests, therefore, that a combination of declining medieval feudalism and growth of modern nationalism in India, guided in due course by better equipped elite members of the middle classes, began to germinate as a largely hidden, unintended consequence of the failure of the 1857 Revolt, a phenomenon noted, but underrated, by historical scholarship.

Abstract:
Nineteenth-century Anglo-Indian and British narratives represent the Indian Revolt of 1857 as an event with a rich gustatory grammar—a problem of greased cartridges, adulterated flour and salt, and mysterious chapatis. Contemporary colonial sources report the circulation of chapatis across North Indian villages on the eve of the revolt. To this day, these chapatis remain inscrutable. This essay traces the chapati from the Anglo-Indian table to the Kanpur trenches in the first English-language novel of the revolt, Edward Money's The Wife and the Ward (1859). The chapati, as a domestic edible, functions as an index of assimilation. It adulterates its Anglo-Indian eater bodily and morally. It weaves together adulteration and adultery, to demonstrate the gendered colonial politics of bodily purity. As a food of revolt, the chapati is portrayed as a text of Indian fears of bodily contamination. I argue that The Wife and the Ward displaces Anglo-Indian fears of bodily adulteration onto Indian rebels. I examine how the novel reworks Anglo-Indian panic to analyze its schizophrenic nature—consuming chapatis in India while upholding British racial politics of purity and contamination. This bifurcation is conjured in the very term “Anglo-Indian”: always imbricated in the simultaneous and contradictory impulses to assimilate while maintaining difference.

This study aims to analyze the performance of municipal judges in the district of Recife (covering places of Olinda, Igarassu and Recife) between the years of 1841, period in which it was reworked the Code of Criminal Procedure Empire until 1850, in which participants were judged Praieira Revolt. Their duties in the legal environment, relationships with other law enforcement professionals, political engagement, and participation in judicial reforms in the Empire were some of the points analyzed. The idea is to put the judges in the midst of the questions that somehow influenced the functioning of institutions. Among the historical sources used include the Criminal Code 1830, the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1832 and amendment of the Criminal Procedure Code in 1841. Besides these, were also analyzed the codices of the State Public File Emerenciano Jordan (APEJE) on municipal judges and several newspapers that were published at the time - among the main Diário de Pernambuco and the Diário Novo. In general, we intend to treat the law on the perspective of judges without departing from the historical perspective. Understanding the applicability of justice and the evolution of law before a traditional society that was still stuck to the laws of former metropole. It was a new standard deployed in locations that often made their way to justice and the State would need the help of the new legal practices to become more legitimate. Moreover, recent legal ordinances were put into evidence during the Revolt Praieira. We intend to also report that in this time of great political and social happenings, many municipal judges assumed their political position and ended up being protagonists of several episodes that preceded and followed the events of 1848 and 1849.
O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar a atuação dos juízes municipais na comarca do Recife (que abrangia os locais de Olinda, Igarassu e Recife) entre os anos de 1841, período em que foi reformulado o Código de Processo Criminal do Império até 1850, ano em que participantes da Revolta Praieira foram julgados. Suas funções no ambiente jurídico, as relações com outros profissionais da lei, o engajamento político, e a participação nas reformas judiciais no Império foram alguns dos pontos analisados. A ideia é colocar os magistrados nos meio das questões que, de certa forma, influenciavam no funcionamento das instituições. Dentre as fontes utilizadas destacamos o Código Criminal de 1830, o Código do Processo Criminal de 1832 e a reformulação do Código do Processo Criminal em 1841. Além desses, foram também analisados os códices sobre os juízes municipais do Arquivo Público Estadual Jordão Emerenciano (APEJE) e vários jornais que eram publicados na época – entre os principais o Diário de Pernambuco e o Diário Novo. Em geral, pretendemos tratar o ordenamento jurídico sobre a ótica dos magistrados sem fugir da perspectiva histórica. Compreender a aplicabilidade da justiça e a evolução do Direito perante uma sociedade tradicional que ainda estava presa as leis da antiga metrópole. Era uma nova norma implantada em locais que, muitas vezes, faziam a justiça ao seu modo e o Estado precisaria do auxilio das novas práticas jurídicas para se tornar mais legítimo. Além disso, as recentes ordenações jurídicas foram postas em prova no período da Revolta Praieira. Pretendemos assim, também relatar que nesse momento de efervescência, muitos juízes municipais assumiram sua posição política e acabaram sendo protagonistas de vários episódios que antecederam e sucederam os eventos de 1848 e 1849.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the development of the Babi movement and the political implications embodied in its religious teachings. The thesis basically assumes that in its early development (1844--1848), the movement may be seen merely as religiously dissenting from the mainstream of Shi'i tradition. In the course of history, however, and especially after the Bab, its founder, claimed in 1848 to be the return of the Hidden Imam and proclaimed the abrogation of Qur'anic shari'a, the Babi movement showed radical tendencies, thus threatening the established religious and political authorities. This later development (1848--1853) was characterized by armed revolts by the Babis against the government troops. This thesis also examines the nature of Babi religious dissent and demonstrate that the Babi revolts were to a large extent based on religious motives.

Abstract:
This work is a macro-study of Chinese Muslims in Yunnan, Southwest China, focussing on their religious and political activities in the mid-19th century under the Manchu-Qing rule. Its main aim is to provide a comprehensive treatment of their revolt of 1855-1873. Chapter 1 is a background survey of Muslims and their settlement in China before the Qing Dynasty. Chapter 2 deals with the origins and development of Yunnanese Muslims from Central Asian stock to subjects of the Middle Kingdom, and with their religion in Yunnan. Chapter 3 discusses Yunnanese Muslim social and political status under the Qing rule, and the causes of their uprisings: religious, cultural and economic conflicts with the Han Chinese on the one hand and oppression and aggression from the Manchu government, Han gentry and militia. Chapter 4 traces the early course of rebellions in the east and west of the province and the relations between the two groups. Chapter 5 gives an account of the development of Du Wenxiu's Muslim regime and the establishment of the Dali Sultanate. Chapter 6 is concerned with the Sultanate's failed foreign relations with western powers, particularly Britain, and the resulting hastening of its collapse. Chapter 7 analyzes the reasons for the collapse of the Sultanate, the success of the Manchu's suppression and its aftermath. Chapter 8 is a summary of the work. The thesis is intended to inaugurate further contributions to an area of Islamic history which, although neglected by scholars east and west, is nevertheless of considerable significance in the realm of Islamic studies as a whole.

A presente pesquisa busca analisar como se deu, no CearÃ, o processo de IndependÃncia e a formaÃÃo do Estado Nacional. Para tanto, nos propusemos, primeiramente, a investigar como se deu a desvinculaÃÃo polÃtica da capitania do Siarà grande da capitania geral de Pernambuco no ano de 1799 e a importÃncia desse fato tanto para uma maior autonomia local como para o desenvolvimento dessa capitania. AlÃm desse aspecto, analisamos como os grupos locais se colocaram diante da presenÃa da famÃlia real na colÃnia, Reino Unido a partir de 1815, destacando o movimento de 1817 como um primeiro momento de descontentamento com as ordens e medidas tomadas pela Corte Imperial que estavam indo de encontro aos interesses locais, sobretudo das capitanias do Norte. Discutimos tambÃm a participaÃÃo do Cearà no processo de IndependÃncia e na ConfederaÃÃo do Equador, destacando que a adesÃo a esse movimento refletia as divergÃncias existentes tanto nessa provÃncia como no recente paÃs a respeito de como ele deveria ser conduzido. E ainda debatemos sobre o movimento conhecido na historiografia como Revolta de Pinto Madeira, movimento de cunho restauracionista, que tinha, entre outros motivos, restabelecer D. Pedro I no trono brasileiro depois de sua abdicaÃÃo em sete de abril de 1831.
The present research seeks to analyze how did happen, in CearÃ, the independence process and the formation of the National State. Therefore, we proposed first to investigate how did occur the political disentail of the captainship of Siarà grande from the general captainship of Pernambuco in the year of 1799, and the importance of such fact both for a local bigger autonomy and for that captainship development. Beside this aspect, we analyze how did the local groups place before the Royal Familyâs presence in the colony, United Kingdom from 1815, putting in relief the 1817âs movement like a first moment of displeasure with the orders and measures taken by Imperial Court which were going opposed to the local interests, mainly the Northâs captainships. We discussed too the participation of Cearà in the process of independence, and in the Equator Confederation, detaching that the adherence to that movement reflected the existing divergences both in that province and in the recent country respecting to how it should ought be conducted. And l we still discuss on the movement known in historiography as Pinto Madeiraâs Revolt, a movement of restoring character that has, among other motifs, the re-establishment of D. Pedro I in Brazilianâs throne after his abdication in April seven 1831.

Resumo: A obra lírica de Teófilo Dias (1854 - 1889) é hoje composta de quatro livros: Lira dos Verdes Anos, Cantos Tropicais, Fanfarras e A Comédia dos Deuses. Sua poesia é considerada pela crítica, por vezes baudelairiana, por vezes parnasiana, ora simbolista. Este trabalho rompe com as "escolas literárias" e demais reduções teóricas e visa compreendê-la a partir das discussões estéticas e políticas próprias de sua historicidade. Em seu canto lírico, elaborado a partir da ressonância de várias tendências nacionais e estrangeiras, o culto ao belo-horrível e a mobilização política não se mostram isolados, mas como peças que harmonicamente se fundem no vitral da imagem.
Abstract: The works of Teófilo Dias (1854 - 1889) are composed by four books: Lira dos Verdes Anos, Cantos Tropicais, Fanfarras and A Comédia dos Deuses. His poetry is considered by the critics as baudelairian, or parnassian, or symbolist. This investigation breaks with these conceptions of "literary schools" and others theorical reductions, and intends to understand them in the aesthetics and political discussions within its historicity. In his poetry, which is elaborated by the resonance of multiples tendencies (nationals and foreigns), the aesthetic of the horror's beauty and the political mobilization were not composed isolatedly: it were harmonically merged to the sculpture of the image.

Par esprit critique, il faut certes entendre dans le cas de nerval esprit frondeur et satirique, scepticisme et doute metaphysique. Ces facultes peuvent aller jusqu'a la contestation dans le domaine politique et jusqu'a la revolte satanique dans le domaine religieux. Mais il faut nuancer ces affirmations qui feraient de nerval l'heritier des seuls philosophes des lumieres alors qu'il a retenu du xviiieme siecle une autre tradition, celle de l'illuminisme, comme l'atteste le recueil intitule les illumines. La dualite philosophique de nerval, esprit douteur tourmente par la volonte de croire, rebelle se detournant de l'action violente, n'est pas sans consequences. Elle induit ce que l'on pourrait appeler la dialectique de l'esprit critique. Les scrupules religieux et le desir de pacification et d'union sociale sont tels chez nerval qu'ils combattent sans cesse l'esprit critique : celui-ci semble en fait se retourner contre lui-meme. Cette dialectique se repete indefiniment dans l'oeuvre nervalienne comme si le debat entre superstition et doute, entre revolte et desir de fusion ne pouvait se resoudre. Pourtant, l'etude d'une production litteraire s'etendant sur trente annees permet de degager une evolution. But it's necessary to consider that nerval doesn't only inherit from the philosophers of the enlightenment but also from illuminati. Pedro I in Brazilian’s throne after his abdication in April seven 1831.
A presente pesquisa busca analisar como se deu, no Ceará, o processo de Independência e a formação do Estado Nacional. Para tanto, nos propusemos, primeiramente, a investigar como se deu a desvinculação política da capitania do Siará grande da capitania geral de Pernambuco no ano de 1799 e a importância desse fato tanto para uma maior autonomia local como para o desenvolvimento dessa capitania. Além desse aspecto, analisamos como os grupos locais se colocaram diante da presença da família real na colônia, Reino Unido a partir de 1815, destacando o movimento de 1817 como um primeiro momento de descontentamento com as ordens e medidas tomadas pela Corte Imperial que estavam indo de encontro aos interesses locais, sobretudo das capitanias do Norte. Discutimos também a participação do Ceará no processo de Independência e na Confederação do Equador, destacando que a adesão a esse movimento refletia as divergências existentes tanto nessa província como no recente país a respeito de como ele deveria ser conduzido. E ainda debatemos sobre o movimento conhecido na historiografia como Revolta de Pinto Madeira, movimento de cunho restauracionista, que tinha, entre outros motivos, restabelecer D. Pedro I no trono brasileiro depois de sua abdicação em sete de abril de 1831.

Revert Henry Klumb, alemão de Berlim, instalou-se na cidade do Rio de Janeiro entre 1852/1853, onde se associou com o pintor francês François Moreaux e começou a fotografar retratos. Pouco tempo depois, em 1855, seu nome sozinho apareceria no “Jornal do Commercio”, informando que além de dominar a “arte do daguerreótipo”, produzia retratos “sobre papel, vidro, marfim” e executava “vistas de chácaras, monumentos” e reproduções de “pinturas, gravuras, plantas de architetura, etc.”

Abstract:
Em 2022, a Agência Nacional de Águas e Saneamento Básico divulgou um estudo que apresenta 187 barragens de 22 estados brasileiros em situação crítica. Agravando tal cenário, em alguns lugares do Brasil, a inspeção de barragens ainda envolve atividades manuais de coleta de dados por meio de checklists impressos. Logo, a transformação digital revela-se salutar para aprimorar a segurança dessas obras. Diante dessa oportunidade, este artigo apresenta o SisBarragens, um aplicativo mobile para apoio à inspeção de barragens de acumulação de água aderente ao regimento brasileiro. Sendo fruto de uma pesquisa em andamento, contribui-se para literatura ao discutir um problema e uma solução digital com desdobramentos pertinentes para a interseção entre as áreas de Sistemas de Informação e Gestão de Barragens.

Abstract:
O tema central dessa comunicação é a análise da produção do escultor brasileiro Rodolfo Bernardelli (1852–1931) na Itália, no final do século XIX, enfocando especialmente a realização do grupo monumental em mármore Cristo e a mulher adúltera (1881-1884). Apesar da importância de Rodolfo Bernardelli no cenário artístico brasileiro, a sua trajetória ainda não foi estudada por completo. Percebendo a ausência de estudos nessa área, enfocamos o período de sua formação em nossa pesquisa de mestrado, concluída em 2005. O artista, que freqüentou a Academia Imperial de Belas Artes, na década de 1870, estudou em Roma por vários anos, onde também criou algumas de suas obras mais conhecidas. Na Itália, o jovem escultor foi aluno de Giulio Monteverde e manteve contato com a obra de destacados artistas como Vincenzo Gemito, Achille d’Orsi e Michetti. Em 1885, ele regressou ao Rio de Janeiro e expôs, em mostra individual, os trabalhos realizados no exterior, obtendo grande repercussão na imprensa e crítica cariocas e também na Academia. O seu grupo escultórico Cristo e a Mulher Adúltera, apresentado nessa mostra, tanto pelo tema como por sua ousada execução formal, revela o diálogo com a escultura italiana contemporânea. É esse aspecto da produção de Bernardelli, presente também em outras obras suas desse período, que faz com que o artista seja prestigiado em seu retorno da Europa e indica novas direções para a escultura no Brasil, no final do Segundo Reinado.

Abstract:
A deteção das conceções alternativas que as crianças trazem para a sala de aula é de crucial importância quando pretendemos intervir no sentido da mudança concetual. Existem várias estratégias para detetar essas ideias prévias, desviadas da realidade e do conhecimento científico, e que podem constituir obstáculos à aprendizagem. O desenho é uma estratégia que se revela muito eficaz pois permite às crianças exteriorizarem os seus modelos mentais de uma forma mais fácil que a expressão escrita. Vários autores têm identificado ideias cientificamente incorretas sobre os microrganismos, não só em crianças nos primeiros anos de escolaridade mas também em ciclos de ensino mais avançados. Assim, os microrganismos são muitas vezes imaginados como animais minúsculos e, em muitos casos, com características antropomorfizadas, com cabeça, expressões faciais e membros. De um modo geral, as crianças consideram os microrganismos como seres vivos minúsculos e tendem a relacioná-los com espécies animais que lhes são familiares e com conotação negativa. Se estas ideias prévias não forem combatidas nos primeiros anos de escolaridade, poderão tornar-se resistentes à mudança e dificultarem mais tarde as aprendizagens de temáticas relacionadas com os benefícios dos microrganismos e a compreensão do seu importante papel nos ecossistemas e na biotecnologia. Neste estudo apresenta-se uma proposta de modelo de deteção de conceções alternativas acerca dos microrganismos através da utilização do desenho. Analisaram-se desenhos de 187 crianças que finalizaram o 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico e, através de uma categorização a posteriori, surgiu um modelo centrado nas categorias “forma” (real, antropomórfica, animal, outras) e “conotação” (positiva, negativa, sem conotação). Assim, obtivemos um modelo de análise que pode servir de ferramenta de elevada importância, contribuindo para o conhecimento do professor acerca das ideias prévias dos alunos aquando da lecionação de conteúdos relacionados e que lhe permita avançar, de forma eficaz, com estratégias promotoras da mudança concetual.

Abstract:
The dynamics of flexible multibody systems with interval parameters is studied based on a non-intrusive computation methodology. The Absolute Nodal Coordinate Formulation (ANCF) is used to model the rigid-flexible multibody system, including the finite elements of the ANCF and the ANCF Reference Nodes (ANCF-RNs). The Chebyshev sampling methods including Chebyshev tensor product (CTP) sampling method and Chebyshev collocation method (CCM), are utilized to generate the Chebyshev surrogate model for Interval Differential Algebraic Equations (IDAEs). For purpose of preventing the interval explosion problem and maintaining computation efficiency, the interval bounds of the IDAEs are determined by scanning the deduced Chebyshev surrogate model. To further improve the computation efficiency, OpenMP directives are also used to parallelize the solving process of the Differential Algebraic Equations (DAEs) by fixing the uncertain interval parameter at the given sampling points. The sensitivity analysis of flexible multibody systems with interval parameters is initially performed by using the direct differentiation method. The direct differentiation method differentiates the dynamic equations with respect to the design variable, which yields the system sensitivity equations governed by DAEs. The generalized alpha method is introduced to integrate the sensitivity DAEs. The sensitivity equations of flexible multibody systems with interval parameters are also described by the IDAEs. Based on the continuum mechanics, the computational efficient analytical formulations for the derivative items of the system sensitivity equations are deduced. Three examples are studied to validate the proposed methodology, including the complicated spatial rigid-flexible multibody systems with a large number of uncertain interval parameters, the flexible system with uncertain interval clearance size joint, and the first order sensitivity analysis of flexible multibody systems with interval parameters. Firstly, the dynamics analysis of a six-arm space robot with six interval parameters is performed. For this case study, the interval dynamics cannot be obtained by directly scanning the IDAEs because extremely huge sets of DAEs with deterministic samples have to be solved. The estimated total computational time for solving the scanned IDAEs will be 1850 days! However, the computational time for solving the scanned Chebyshev surrogate model is 9796.97 seconds. It shows the effectiveness of the proposed computation methodology. Then, the nonlinear dynamics of a planar slider-crank mechanism with uncertain interval clearance size joint is studied in this work. The kinetics model of the revolute clearance joints is formulated under the ANCF-RN framework. Moreover, the influence of the LuGre and the modified Coulomb’s friction force models on the system’s dynamic response is investigated. By analyzing the bounds of dynamic response, the bifurcation diagrams are observed. It must be highlighted that with increasing the size of clearance, it does not automatically lead to unstable behaviors. Finally, the first order sensitivity analysis of flexible multibody systems with interval parameters is also studied in this work. The third one of a flexible mechanism with interval parameters is used to perform the sensitivity analysis.
