Abstract:
In Japan, adolescent school refusers often commit violence against their parents, particularly against their mothers. The authors investigated the relationship between the test-activity (sleep and wakefulness) cycle and the filial violence of one adolescent school refuser. His mother voluntarily recorded his daily life over a period of about 11 mo. This record included the rest-activity cycle, filial violence, school attendance, and other kinds of behavior. This school refuser was more likely to commit violence during the epoch of disturbed test-activity cycle. We believe that the direct manipulation of the circadian system is worth investigating as a new approach to developing a treatment of school refusal.

Abstract:
In the discussion of personal identity, from his Treatise of Human Nature, David Hume reaches a famous, if notorious conclusion: there is no self. We are “nothing but a bundle or collection of different perceptions” (T 252). My argument is that Hume's thesis on the self rests on a questionable rejection of a rival view that appears to commit the fallacy of equivocation. Along the way I identify a few possible problems with Hume's overall analysis of the self. My argument is that these diffi culties center around the conceptual apparatus Hume relies on to explain and analyze consciousness.

Abstract:
Every 40 years, a person commits suicide somewhere in the world. Suicide claims the lives of over 800,000 individuals each year, accounting for about 1.4 percent of all deaths globally. In this spectrum, mental disorders are among the strongest predictors of suicide attempts with depression, substance abuse, and psychosis being the most common risk factors. Regardless of suicides being an unprecedented epidemic in the society, Malaysia is one of the few which remains the archaic law in statutes, that criminalises suicide and punishes anyone who attempts or commits any act leading to the commission of such an offence with a sentence of one year in prison, a fine, or both. The present research thus aims at highlighting the challenges of prosecuting attempted suicides in Malaysia based on the attitude of the judiciary, thus addressing the weaknesses of Section 309 of the Penal Code of which the provision for criminalising suicide rests. Employing the doctrinal research methodology, systematic means of legal reasoning based on statutory materials, conventional legal theories, and related case law pertinent to the criminalising of attempted suicide in Malaysia are produced. In dealing with issues as intricate as suicides and mental disorder, the present research argues that the focus should be to develop a regulatory framework that facilitate access to appropriate care in a professional and sensitive manner instead of punishment.

Abstract:
This article responds to four criticisms of the Catholic view of natural law: (1) it commits the naturalistic fallacy, (2) it makes divine revelation unnecessary, (3) it implausibly claims to establish a shared universal set of moral beliefs, and (4) it disregards the noetic effects of sin. Relying largely on the Church’s most important theologian on the natural law, St. Thomas Aquinas, the author argues that each criticism rests on a misunderstanding of the Catholic view. To accomplish this end, the author first introduces the reader to the natural law by way of an illustration he calls the “the ten (bogus) rules.” He then presents Aquinas’ primary precepts of the natural law and shows how our rejection of the ten bogus rules ultimately relies on these precepts (and inferences from them). In the second half of the article, he responds directly to each of the four criticisms.

AbstractAlthough the non-intervention rule is often defended as a guarantee of international order, rigid adherence to it cannot be morally justified when governments commit or permit atrocities within their territory. In such cases, intervention is permissible and may even be obligatory. Drawing on the ideas of Rousseau, Kant, and to a lesser extent Hegel, this article examines the grounds of the argument for humanitarian intervention, demonstrating that intervention is in principle not only permissible but obligatory when considered philosophically. Therightto intervene can be grounded on common morality, the protection of sovereignty and the coerciveness of justice. Thedutyto intervene rests on a respect for humanity and the conceptual relationship between rights and duties. Considering these two lines of argument shows that humanitarian intervention can be conceived as a duty that states can be reasonably required to perform.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTDoes electoral fraud stabilize authoritarian rule or undermine it? The answer to this question rests in part on how voters evaluate regime candidates who engage in fraud. Using a survey experiment conducted after the 2016 elections in Russia, the authors find that voters withdraw their support from ruling party candidates who commit electoral fraud. This effect is especially large among strong supporters of the regime. Core regime supporters are more likely to have ex ante beliefs that elections are free and fair. Revealing that fraud has occurred significantly reduces their propensity to support the regime. The authors’ findings illustrate that fraud is costly for autocrats not just because it may ignite protest, but also because it can undermine the regime’s core base of electoral support. Because many of its strongest supporters expect free and fair elections, the regime has strong incentives to conceal or otherwise limit its use of electoral fraud.

Abstract:
The purpose of this his doctoral thesis is the systematic investigation of a part of the archaeological deposit and of the individuals buried in the Crypt of the Beata Vergine Annunziata, at the ancient Ospedale Maggiore Ca 'Granda in Milan. The archeaological and anthropological methods made it possible to obtain useful results for addressing a multidisciplinary discourse to reconstruct the history of the recovered skeletons. The aforementioned research also laid the methodological foundations for future studies on the crypt and for comparisons with other populations, even from distant geographical areas. The investigated section of the crypt has shown, for the first time, a well-defined stratigraphic sequence, as well as individuals in anatomical connection and non-osseous finds of important archaeological value. The anthropological study was divided into two different campaigns: Campaign A analyzed the 1571 commingled bone remains from previous surveys, without a stratigraphic context, and Campaign B investigated the 1059 bones and 43 individuals recovered in the recent archaeological excavation. The results thus obtained were accompanied by those relating to other scientific disciplines, carried out on a sample of finds of a different nature such as, for example, soft tissues and botanical remains trapped in calcified calculus. In order to make a diachronic comparison to reconstruct the identity of the ancient inhabitants of Milan and include the population of Ca 'Granda in the wider MIAntropo project, an anthropological comparison was then carried out with three different population samples. The archaeological skeletons taken into consideration came from Roman, Medieval and Contemporary necropolises and cemeteries. A first and important result of the archaeological analysis was to identify the dynamics of the burial of the bodies, which was a primary long-term usage deposit. The presence of individuals in anatomical connection is the result of the deposition of numerous corpses shortly after death. The mixture of osteological findings, found in the various levels of the deposit, is mostly due to the action of natural taphonomic events, such as the fall and rolling of bones due to gravity and anthropogenic forces. Anthropological analyses made it possible to reconstruct a non-homogeneous population, constituted of individuals of both sexes and of various ages: from fetuses to elderly over 60 years of age. The data confirmed that mostly the poor population of Milan was treated in the hospital wards; the signs observed on the bones are mostly mainly chronic in nature. The symbolic disease of the Modern Age, syphilis, was well represented among them. A few traumatic injuries were found in the bone findings examined, most suffered before the death of the individual and in course of healing. A large percentage of these traumatic events can be attributed to accidental causes, probably during work activities, but some, even if only a minimal percentage may be ascribed to interpersonal violence. Finally, laboratory analyses made it possible to acquire further information on how medicine was practiced within the hospital and on the lifestyle of the ancient inhabitants, as well as on the Sepolcreto itself and on the dating of the burials. The topics covered made it possible to obtain, for the first time, a reconstructive framework composed of different, but coherent, historical and scientific data, hence proposing a solid methodology to solve the problems still unresolved and subject of future studies. The scientific criteria outlined here will be able to lay the foundations for a multidisciplinary scientific approach, suitable for tackling other study contexts from the archaeological and anthropological point of view.

Abstract:
This chapter returns to a fundamental question for the author’s overall interpretation: just what are conceptual relations for Spinoza? It argues against a very tempting answer, according to which conceptual relations are exclusively mental relations. This answer would commit Spinoza to a very robust form of metaphysical idealism. However, the author shows how and why Spinoza rejects both idealism and the underlying mentalistic account of conceptual relations on independent grounds. Chapter nine shows how this extra-mental, structural account of the conceptual fits elegantly into the rest of Spinoza’s ontology while avoiding the errors of the idealist interpretations. Given how little Spinoza offers us here, the conclusion indicates ways future research—both historical and constructive—might try to shed further light on Spinoza’s account of the conceptual.

This chapter draws attention to the ways in which a commitment to radical vulnerability can enable and enrich politically engaged alliance work, and the particular ways in which affect and trust empower translations across borders. It presents excerpts of letters, conversations, poems, and narratives from contexts that might seem disjointed and disparate on the surface but that tell stories—of encounters, events, and relationships—that have enabled the arguments made in the rest of this book. These fragments also point to the intense entanglements between autobiography and politics, and seek to initiate a discussion on feminist praxis that commits itself to learning and unlearning by inserting one's body—individually and collectively—into the process of knowledge making and the generative challenges that such insertion poses for imagining storytelling and engagement across socioeconomic, geographical, and institutional borders.

Abstract:
At the heart of human intelligence rests a fundamental puzzle: How are we incredibly smart and stupid at the same time? No existing machine can match the power and flexibility of human perception, language, and reasoning. Yet, we routinely commit errors that reveal the failures of our thought processes. This book makes sense of this paradox by arguing that our cognitive errors are not haphazard. Rather, they are the inevitable consequences of a brain optimized for efficient inference and decision making within the constraints of time, energy, and memory—in other words, data and resource limitations. Framing human intelligence in terms of these constraints, the book shows how a deeper computational logic underpins the “stupid” errors of human cognition. Embarking on a journey across psychology, neuroscience, computer science, linguistics, and economics, the book presents unifying principles that govern human intelligence. First, inductive bias: any system that makes inferences based on limited data must constrain its hypotheses in some way before observing data. Second, approximation bias: any system that makes inferences and decisions with limited resources must make approximations. Applying these principles to a range of computational errors made by humans, the book demonstrates that intelligent systems designed to meet these constraints yield characteristically human errors. Examining how humans make intelligent and maladaptive decisions, the book delves into the successes and failures of cognition.

Abstract:
This chapter presents Anselm’s modal argument for God’s existence. It shows that the argument is valid. It also evaluates some of its premises for truth. One premise asserts that a perfect being would exist necessarily. The rest of the book examines this. Another denies that a possible being has contradictory properties. Another turns out to be true given the Brouwer system of modal logic. One premise commits Anselm to a controversial thesis that is at the core of Meinong’s views, that an item can have attributes whether or not it exists. The chapter suggests that Anselm would do well to drop this premise, and suggests a substitute.

Abstract:
This chapter considers why we should be interested in the politics of legislative debate. What does the analysis of legislative debate contribute to our understanding of politics more generally? This is particularly important given that legislative debate is not actually “debate” in any meaningful sense of the word, and that most legislators are not even present when most legislative speeches are made. The answers offered here rest on the assumption that speeches in the legislature allow legislators to commit to policy positions on the official record. If the main concern is politics between parties, debate speeches tend to concern actual policy implementation, likely closer to “true” preferences than electoral aspirations and promises. If the prime concern is politics within parties, debate speeches can give insight into internal party policy divisions, even in settings where the final legislative party vote is tightly whipped.

Abstract:
This chapter considers why immigrant military personnel and veterans should be granted unconditional naturalization immediately upon enlistment. It makes a normative argument for reviving the connection between the obligations of military service and the rights of citizenship. It applies this argument to the political problem of deporting noncitizen military personnel and veterans. In the U.S., military service currently does not immediately result in naturalization. Nor does it protect a noncitizen veteran from deportation. The normative content of the oath of enlistment should be construed as creating a permanent reciprocal relationship of rights and obligations between the U.S. government and a soldier regardless of citizenship status. Noncitizens who serve in a nation’s armed forces during a period of declared hostilities should be rendered immune from deportation for the rest of their lives. If they commit an offense, they should be punished for their crimes without being deported or denaturalized.

Abstract:
This chapter examines whether limiting the means to commit suicide can prevent suicide. South Korea has long had suicide rates higher than other high-income countries. In the 2006–2010 time period, suicide by pesticides accounted for more than a fifth of all suicides in the country. Then South Korea banned the sale of paraquat—the leading pesticide—in 2012. This was followed by an immediate decline in suicide rates across all groups. The success of such an effort rests on a simple observation: close to half of all suicides are acts of impulse, decided with an hour, if not a few minutes, before the suicide itself. This means that having access to lethal means matters enormously. And lethality varies between means. The likelihood of a successful suicide by drug overdose is less than 10%; the likelihood of successful suicide by gun is more than 90%. That means, with guns around, the suicidal impulse is much more likely to end in the act’s completion. It is not surprising then, given how many guns there are in the country, that firearms account for about half of all suicides in the United States. As such, as people discuss suicide, measures to limit the role of guns should be part of the national conversation.

Abstract:
Steve’s departure from the group shook things up. To the rest of the men, it seemed as though he had sorted things out sooner and more fully than they had. They were genuinely happy for their friend but also wondered what his ability to commit to a new relationship meant about them. More than ever, the men questioned whether they were simply adjusting at their own slower pace or were, instead, spinning their wheels and unable to move forward. For a brief period after Steve left, the men talked about remarriage as though it was the most obvious measure of resolved bereavement. This view was reinforced by their interactions outside of group meetings. When friends and relatives asked them if they were dating again, the men heard that question as a proxy for “Are you doing better yet?” If they could answer “yes,” that felt like progress. By extension, it was tempting to think of remarriage as the main goal of their grief work. The more the men processed Steve’s departure and the complexities of committing themselves to someone new, the more they realized that marrying again was not the most important or even a necessary objective. Healing included far more than replacing their wedding bands. Increasingly, the men wrestled with larger questions. What was most important to them now? What kind of fathers did they want to be? Were their jobs meaningful and, if not, could they risk changing careers? Each man had already confronted a radical disruption in his imagined life trajectory, a loss of the future he had thought would be his. The challenge now was as much about reimagining a future as it was about coming to terms with the past. One evening after the group had been meeting for about two years, the conversation stalled as the men tried to articulate their hopes about the future. During that rare moment of silence around the table, I (Don) decided to share a personal story about how I moved forward after a very different kind of loss. I had not previously talked about my own family with the men.

We ourselves have seen the democracy overthrown twice and been robbed of our freedom twice, not by people guilty of other kinds of criminality but by people who despised the laws and were willing to be the enemy’s slaves and subject the citizens to wilful violence. [11] And the defendant is one of them. Even if he is too young to be part of the constitution in place then, still his character belongs to that regime. It was natures such as his which handed our power to the enemy, knocked down the walls protecting our land, and killed fifteen hundred citizens without trial. [12] It is appropriate for you to remember those events and take vengeance not only on the ones who abused us at that time but also on those who now desire to reduce the city to that condition, and on those whom you expect to turn out evil more than on those who offended before, in so far as it is better to find a means of preventing future crimes than to punish those which have already taken place. [13] Do not wait for them to band together and seize an opportunity to offend against the whole city, but use any pretext on which they are handed over to you to take vengeance on them. Consider it a stroke of luck whenever you catch a man who has demonstrated the whole of his criminality in petty acts. [14] It would have been best of all if the wicked among mankind bore some mark to enable you to chastise them, before any of the citizen body is wronged. But since it is impossible to discover them before someone is harmed by them, at least when they are recognized everyone should hate such men and consider them public enemies. [15] Bear in mind that risks to property do not apply to the poor, but we all alike are subject to assault on our persons. So when you punish people who take money, you benefit only the rich, but when you chastise those who commit outrage, you are helping yourselves. [16] So you must take trials such as this especially seriously, and in the case of transactions in general you should assess the penalty at the amount you think the prosecutor should get, but in the case of outrage you should assess a penalty whose payment will make the defendant desist from his current excesses. [17] If then you deprive of their property people who subject citizens to wilful abuse and if you hold the view that no penalty is sufficiently severe for people whose crimes are." "[24] Observe how implausible his claim is. He assessed his whole property at a value of two hundred and fifty drachmas. Now it would be remarkable if he hired a male lover for more money than he actually possesses. [25] But his impudence is such that he is not content to lie merely about this point, the payment of the money; he actually says that he has been repaid. But surely it’s inconceivable that at that point we would commit offences of the sort he has charged us with, in an attempt to deprive him of the three hundred drachmas, and pay back the money precisely when we had outfought him, without obtaining formal release from his charges and when under no compulsion? [26] No, Council, all this is a calculated fabrication by him; he says he gave the money so that he will not seem guilty of intolerable conduct in daring to treat the lad so outrageously when there was no compact between them, and he pretends to have been repaid because it is obvious that he never made a formal complaint about money or made any mention of it whatsoever. [27] And he claims that he was beaten and left in a terrible condition by me at his own door. Yet it is certain that he pursued the boy more than four stades from his house without any injury, and he denies this though more than two hundred people saw it. [28] He says that we came to his house with shards of pottery and I threatened to kill him; and this indicates intent. In my opinion, Council, it is easy to tell that he is lying, not only for you who regularly consider such matters but for the rest of the world as well. [29] Who could find it credible that with full intent and deliberation I came to Simon’s house in the daytime, with the lad, when there was such a large number of people gathered there, unless I was so deranged as to wish to fight alone against large numbers? Besides which, I knew that he would be delighted to see me at his door, since it was he who used to come to my house and force his way in, and who had the impudence to search for me without any consideration for my sister and my nieces, and finding out where I happened to be at dinner called me out and hit me. [30] And at that point, it seems, I kept my peace to avoid notoriety, regarding his criminality as my misfortune, but when time had passed, I then (according to him) became eager for notoriety! [31] If the boy had been at his house, it would make some sense for him to lie to the effect that I was compelled by desire to behave somewhat more foolishly than usual. As it stands, the boy would not even talk to him, but hated him more than anyone in the world, while it was with me that he was." In Trials from Classical Athens, 87. Abstract:
Abstract On rare occasions, a portion of an uncut fiber will exit the discharge chute of a consumer hammer mill type chipper/shredder and remain at rest with its inboard portion in the neighborhood of the rotating elements. Disturbing the fiber may cause it to commit to the rotating flails and be pulled instantaneously back into the machine. A number of investigators have postulated that an operator who grasps a fiber that subsequently experiences this pull-in phenomenon cannot release it fast enough to avoid being dragged into the flails. This hypothesis is discredited by both analytical and experimental analyses.
