Full textDuring the manufacturing of submarine pressure hull are often applied processes like cold forming and welding. Those processes lead to permanent plastic deformations which are associated with residual stresses. The presence of residual stresses is equivalent to the introduction of an initial pre-load in the structure, which accelerates the plastification process, decreasing hull pressure resistance. To quantify this reduction, a case study that considers residual stresses due to cold forming on hull and flange plates has been performed. The study encompasses hull diameters of 6, 8 and 10 m, made of HY100 steel. A nonlinear model has been done, considering material and geometric non-linearity. Complementarily, the influence of experimental residual stresses profiles on the reduction of collapse pressure of the Spanish S-80 submarine has been studied. These profiles consider the simultaneous presence of residual stresses due to cold forming and welding. In all studied models, the residual stresses have been introduced in the numerical models through INISTATE Ansys software command. This command has been validated using three reference models available in open source literature. In the end, it has been possible to verify that the presence of residual stresses increase the hull plastification and reduces the collapse pressure up to 5%, being the cold forming induced stress which most contributes to this reduction. Finally, it could be concluded, in the end of the study, that the influence of the residual stresses is small when compared with the collapse pressure obtained for the analyzed pressure hulls.

Resumo: Há poucos estudos na literatura sobre o reparo de resinas para base de próteses com resinas acrílicas polimerizadas por energia de microondas, e nenhum trabalho que tenha avaliado a influência do tratamento químico prévio das superfícies na resistência de união entre estas resinas. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência de diferentes tratamentos umedecedores de superfície na resistência transversa de uma resina acrílica termopolimerizável convencional (Lucitone 550-" W') reparada com uma resina acrílica polimerizada em microondas (Acron MC.:' Ac!:), após armazenagem em água a 37°C durante 4SI2 horas. Foi propósito também avaliar o efeito do ciclo de polimerização em microondas, utilizado no reparo dos espécimes, sobre a dureza superficial de Lu. Foram confeccionados setenta espécimes com a resina Lu segundo a especificação n012 da ADA. Destes, quatorze permaneceram intactos formando o grupo controle positivo (GI); os cinqüenta e seis restantes foram divididos casualmente em 4 grupos e tiveram a região central removida em 1° mm, sendo reparados com a resina Ac, processada em microondas durante 3 minutos a 540 W. Previamente ao procedimento de reparo, as superfícies a serem unidas receberam diferentes tratamentos químicos (Gil! = 30 s. de imersão em monômero da Ac; GIV = 30 s. de imersão em acetona; GV = 15 s. de imersão em acetona + jato de ar + 15 s. de imersão em monômero da Ac; GVI=sem tratamento umedecedor). Quatorze espécimes intactos confeccionados com a resina Ac formaram o grupo controle negativo (Gil). Para a análise da dureza superficial, dez discos (altura=4,0 mm; 0=30,0 mm) foram confeccionados com Lu utilizando-se a técnica convencional de inclusão em muflas metálicas. Estes espécimes receberam acabamento e polimento seqüenciais em lixas de carbeto de silício. Após 4SI2 horas de armazenagem em água a 37°C, cinco espécimes foram submetidos a um ciclo de polimerização em microondas (540 W durante 03 minutos), formando o grupo teste MW. Os espécimes restantes formaram o grupo controle (CT). A dureza superficial dos espécimes dos grupos MWe CT foi avaliada em um microdurômetro Shimadzu com carga de penetração de 25 gramas, durante 5 segundos, após os períodos de armazenagem de 24 horas, 4S horas e 30 dias em água a 37°C. O efeito dos tratamentos químicos sobre a superfície da resina Lu foi observado em MEV. As médias (MPa) e desvio-padrões de resistência transversa obtidos foram: GI=92,3:t3,OS/ GII=10S,2I2,72/ GIII=92,2:t3,5/ GIV=97,6:t4,61/ GV=S7,2:t4,61 / VI=8S,8:t3,62. Full textThe frequent use of glyphosate in production systems that involve the crops soybean and corn, resistant to glyphosate, have selected weed populations resistant to this herbicide, being very common in Brazil the occurrence of resistant populations of bitter grass (Digitaria insularis). For the rational management of these populations, there is a need of alternative measures, that involve herbicides and cultural practices, which can be applied only with the knowledge of the weed biology, however little is known about the bitter grass biology. Therefore, this study aimed to obtain basic information of the biology of populations of bitter grass susceptible and resistant to the herbicide glyphosate. For that, three assays were conducted in the Department of Crop Science at ESALQ / USP, in Piracicaba - SP, during the year 2012. For that, it was collected seeds of the resistant biotype in Matão, São Paulo and seeds of the susceptible population in Piracicaba, São Paulo. The determination of the resistance factor for glyphosate between the biotypes was performed using dose-response curves at stage 3-4 tillers of bitter grass. Following, it was evaluated the germination and quantification of dry matter produced under the effect of different amounts of coverage with millet straw. It was also developed trials to see longevity of the resistant and susceptible biotypes, conducted at different soil depths. With the model of dose-response curve, it was possible to quantify the resistance factor (GR50) from the R statistical program by obtaining the value of 16.66, compared to the susceptible biotype resistant. The increased amount of millet straw on seed caused reduction in dry weight of seedlings of Digitaria insularis, for both biotypes, being more evident in treatments of 4.0 and 8.0 ton ha-1. The resistant biotype showed significantly higher number of seedlings than susceptible population, regardless of the amount of straw. It is not possible to conclude that the seeds of resistant biotypes have greater longevity than the seeds of the susceptible biotype, and the presence of light is indifferent to its germination.

Full textThe amount of waste has increased over time, currently being a serious threat to the environment. Such is the case of flat glass, which generates considerable quantities of waste that are not reusable in the production. This has generated that its residues receive a greater attention by the authorities and researchers to global level in the last years, proposing respectful uses that contribute towards a more sustainable surroundings. This study deepens in the use of the flat glass waste to reduce its shrinkage and proposes it as a solution in the elaboration of an ecological concrete. For this, different mixing designs were made with varying percentages of flat sprayed glass, making comparisons with respect to a concrete pattern to identify its effect on concrete properties; evaluated by slump tests, compressive strength and compressive strength in sulfate attack conditions. The results show that, the addition of pulverized flat glass contributes to the improvement of slump, compressive strength and compressive strength under sulphate attack conditions; and it presents an economic saving with respect to the reference concrete.

Full textPurpose: the aim of this study was to evaluate the microtensile bond strength of two resin-based cements, conventional and self-adhesive, according to required operating protocols, when luting ceramic and indirect composite restorations. Materials and methods: 20 human molars donated by UNIFAL teeth bank were prepared and, after being divided into two groups, ceramic or composite cylinders were luted to them with two resin-based cements (conventional and self-adhesive). Prepared teeth were sectioned vertically in both buccal-lingual and mesio-distal directions, to obtain 8 mm high, square-shaped “sticks” that were subject to microtensile bond strength test, the necessary force to tracture them was evaluated. Results were subject to two-way ANOVA and Tuckey test. Results: minimum and maximum forces to disrupt conventional cement were greater than the ones required for self-adhesive cement, as well as mean bond strength, regardless the restorative material. Tukey test showed that diferences were statistically significant, regardless the restorative material. Conclusion: the difference between microtensile bond strength values of resin cements tested was statistically significant; the restorative materials did not influence microtensile bond strength values, with no statistically significant differences.

Resumo: As propriedades mecânicas dos cimentos resinosos são influenciadas pelo tipo e composição da matriz resinosa, tipo e tamanho das partículas de carga, modo e grau de conversão dos monômeros em polímeros, e a viscosidade é uma propriedade que está intimamente ligada a esses fatores. Os objetivos deste estudo foram avaliar a influência da viscosidade (alta e baixa) e modo de polimerização (polimerização dual e autopolimerizado) de cimentos resinosos duais (Nexus 2/ Kerr, Corp e Variolink II/ Ivoclar-Vivadent): na resistência de união da restauração à dentina (RU), no grau de conversão (GC) e na resistência flexural biaxial (RFB). Para o teste de RU, substratos dentinários de cinqüenta e seis terceiros molares humanos foram utilizados para o ensaio de microtração através da cimentação de uma peça protética do material de resina composta indireta e estes foram foto-ativados ou não segundo cada grupo experimental. Após 24 horas, os dentes foram secionados para obter espécimes em forma de palitos (de área de secção transversal de 1.0 mm²), que foram testados em tração a uma velocidade de 0,5 mm/ mim (4411/Instron). Os resultados foram analisados por ANOVA 3 fatores e teste Tukey (p=0,05). Para a análise do GC, os cimentos foram aplicados na superfície da unidade de reflectância total atenuada acoplada ao espectrômetro infravermelho (Nicolet Instrument Corp, Madson, Wisconsin, EUA) sendo foto-ativados ou não. Espectros foram obtidos após 5 minutos e 24 horas. O cálculo do grau de conversão foi realizado através da análise da mudança na proporção entre as alturas dos picos das ligações duplas de carbono alifática e aromática. Os dados foram submetidos a ANOVA 3 fatores e teste de Tukey (p=0,05). Para o ensaio de RFB, noventa e seis discos de cimentos resinosos (0,5mm de espessura/ 6mm de diâmetro) foram preparados utilizando moldes de silicone de adição (n=12) e foram foto-ativados ou não segundo os grupos experimentais. Após 5 dias, os discos foram testados em dispositivos de ensaio de flexão biaxial em máquina de ensaio universal (1,27 mm/min, Instron 5844) e os dados analisados estatisticamente por ANOVA 3 fatores e teste Tukey(p=0,05). Para a RU, a polimerização dual (foto + autopolimerização) aumentou significantemente os valores médios para os cimentos resinosos em baixa viscosidade para ambos os cimentos resinosos duais utilizados no estudo. Em relação o GC, a foto-ativação e quando o GC foi mensurado após 24 horas, aumentaram significativamente o GC para ambos os cimentos resinosos. A versão em baixa viscosidade apresentou maior GC que os em alta viscosidade, para as duas formas de polimerização. No teste RFB, a foto-ativação aumentou significantemente a resistência e módulo de flexão. A versão em alta viscosidade quando foto-ativada mostrou maior resistência flexural que em baixa viscosidade, enquanto a viscosidade não alterou os valores médios de módulo flexural. Pode-se concluir que a foto-ativação é necessária durante a cimentação de restaurações indiretas, para garantir adequadas propriedades físico-químicas, e a utilização de cimentos resinosos em diferentes viscosidades pode modificar os valores médios de RFB, GC e RU à dentina.
Abstract: The mechanical properties of resin cements may be influenced by the type and monomer composition, type and filler size, mode, and degree of conversion, which are all associated with resin viscosities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of resin cement viscosity (high and low) (Nexus 2/ Kerr, Corp and Variolink II/ Ivoclar-Vivadent) and the curing mode (dual and chemical activation) on the bond strength to dentin, on the degree of conversion and biaxial flexural strength. For microtensile bond strength test, two bonding agents and their respective resin cement, occlusal dentin surfaces of fifty-six human third molars were used for the testing and the resin cements were applied to pre-cured resin composite discs, which were fixed to dentin surfaces, simulating an indirect restoration. The restored teeth were either light-activated or allowed to self-cure, according to experimental groups. After 24 hs, the teeth were sectioned to obtain bonded beams specimens (1.0 mm²). Each specimen was tested in tension at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min (4411/Instron). Data (MPa) was analyzed by 3- way ANOVA and Tukey's Tukey's test (p=0.05). To evaluate the degree of conversion, the resin cements were applied to surface of a horizontal attenuatedtotal- reflectance unit (Nicolet Instrument Corp, Madson, Wisconsin, EUA) and were polymerized using one of two conditions: self-cure (SC) or direct light exposure (600 mW/cm2, XL3000/3M ESPE) and infrared spectra were obtained after 5 minutes and 24 hours. The degree of conversion was calculated using standard techniques of observing changes in aliphatic-to-aromatic peak ratios pre- and postcuring. Data were analyzed by 3-way repeated measure ANOVA and Tukey's test (p=0.05). For the biaxial flexural strength, forty-eight resin cement discs of each product (0.5 mm thick and 6.0 mm in diameter) were created using silicon impression material molds (n=12) and were either light activated or not, according to experimental groups. After 5 days, the specimens were subjected to the biaxial flexure test in a universal testing machine (1.27 mm/min, Instron 5844) and the data ware statistically analyzed by 3-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test (p=0.05). For bond strength testing, the dual curing mode increased the bond strength for the low viscosity resin cements for both dual resin cement used in this study. For the degree of conversion, the light activation, after 24h, significantly increased the degree of conversion for both resin cements, and the low viscosity version from dual cure or self-cured groups exhibited higher degree of conversion than high viscosity version. Regarding biaxial flexural strength, the light-activation significantly increased flexural strength and modulus, and the high viscosity versions of dual cure groups exhibited higher flexural strength than their low viscosity versions, while the viscosity of resin cements did not influence the modulus. In conclusion, the light-activation of dual resin cements is required in indirect restorations, to provide proper mechanical and chemical properties, and the use of resin cements with different viscosities may change the bonding biomechanical characteristics of indirect restorations.
