Abstract:
This thesis explores how hope in relation to the threats to the earth’s biosphere can be formulated theologically. The starting-point is a questioning of hope raised by the French sociologist and anthropologist Bruno Latour. In Facing Gaia. Eight Lectures on the New Climatic Regime (2015) he asks why so little has happened to reduce the emissions of CO2. Parts of his answers relate to the view that hope is preventing action. Since hope is a central part of Christian doctrine, this study lets Latours scepticism meet some eco-theological litterature, mainly representing evangelical, orthodox and radical material theology, and religious naturalism. Since critic against eschatology is important in Latours explanatory model, this theme is discussed together with the possibilities of the church practices of liturgy and eucharistic celebration, especially in relation to the concept of time and space, the latter elaborated by the radical material theologian Petra Carlsson Redell. Although putting different emphasis on an ultimate eschatological hope, all authors stress the importance of acting now. The evangelical authors Daniel Brunner et al. present a strategy “living as if”, practicing restoration of the Earth here and now. In religious naturalism the hope lies in the common biological ground for all humanity and living things, also leading to a caring ethics. In general, relationality and materiality as well as including marginalized voices are important concepts when the authors are formulating environmental ethics and eco-theology.  The concept of hope is shown to be important to define, in order to sort out especially false hope from a possibly fruitful concept: resilient hope. A resilient hope is grounded in Christian discipleship, is adaptive and able to recover. It is in a reciprocal relation to action. To develop a resilient hope I argue that it is important to allow both desperation and hope, since the free moving between the two “poles” can act liberating and enable action. A resilient hope gives space for scepticism since it is grounded in a reality always on the move. It is open for emergence and construction. Christianity has resources to house the space between hope and despair both in central biblical narratives and in bodily practices as liturgy and eucharist. Resilient hope in this thesis is earthbound, withstands being lost, and arises again and again in search for new constructive possibilities.

Chung, Hsiu-Feng 1965. "Hope and resiliency among college students." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/291755.

Abstract:
The primary purpose of this study is to examine whether hope serves as a protective factor in resiliency. Questionnaires were administered to 112 college students to assess their life experiences, levels of self-esteem, self-confidence, and hope. Self-report levels of self-esteem, self-confidence, and amount of stress were used to differentiate resilient from non-resilient students. Results indicated that the college student sample experienced stress with primary stressor being Relationship. No significant difference in stress was found between male and female students. Hispanic students reported significantly higher levels of stress on academics and work than other ethnic groups. Students with GPA's < 3.0 reported significantly higher levels of stress and more positive Relationship experiences than students with GPA's > 3.0. Finally, resilient students reported significantly greater degree of hope than non-resilient students. The sources of hope for resilient students seem to come from within, with a determination to achieve goals.

Morkel, Salomi. "Barriers to hope and resilience for South African youth." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/76732.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative study forms part of a longitudinal study by the Centre for the Study of Resilience at the University of Pretoria. The RYSE (Resilient Youth in Stressed Environments) research project aims to study the resilience of youth dependant on the petro-chemical industry living in Embalenhle. In this study youth between the ages of 15 and 25 is the focus of the study. This specific study was aimed at describing barriers to hope and resilience for South African youth. The epistemology of interpretivism was followed and the research methodology used was that of a descriptive case study. I collected data by draw, write and tell activities and analysed transcribed discussions of these activities. By using inductive thematic analysis similar responses by participants were highlighted and grouped into themes and sub-themes to find rich descriptions of how youth living in the petro-chemical industry of Embalenhle describe hope and barriers to hope. Two main themes were identified with six subthemes and 15 categories. From the findings I determined that hope is described by youth as optimism and supportive pathways to hope. Barriers to hope are community influence, the self, the petro-chemical industry and poverty. As conclusion I recommended that future research focus on whether individuals have the ablity to identify barriers to hope as well as having strategies to overcome these barriers. In practise workshops to empower youth to identity and utilise sources of hope can be considered.

Gustafsson, Erik. "Broiler producers´ perspectives on bacterial resilience; evaluating a potential of hops." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för geovetenskaper, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-388656.

Full text
Abstract:
An interview study was undertaken to explore Swedish broiler producers´ views for the potential of hops (H. lupulus L.) to reduce reliance on ionophorous coccidiostats in broiler production. The design was a mixed methodology between grounded theory and case study with a semi structured interview method. Nine producers, four using ionophorous coccidiostats and five without reliance in production accepted interview. During interviews participants were presented to research conducted with hops in production and consequences from ionophores in production. All participants thought the risk from pathogen pressure was too great to cut reliance in intensive production owed to the lower efficacy of hops. Therefore owed to how actors in the Swedish food system behave only small producers with enough economical freedom for reduced stocking densities were regarded to be able to uphold animal health with hops. Six parameters within food systems were regarded as leverage points for a potential of hops in production on a larger societal scale if encouraging a more extensive nationwide production system. Those were: purchase will, small local production, increased responsibility within trade, law, elevated consumers and research. Law was seen as a necessity to enforce all other denominators since economical in food systems tend to override social and ecological dimensions. Consequences from power struggle in food systems disfavoring producers has although resulted in a great distrust towards other system actors such as consumers, legal institutions or wholesalers. That has created a reluctance to interact with other system actors even for common goals. A stronger position to other actors in food systems was regarded as increasing a meaningful outcome from interaction. Four parameters emerged as impacting power relations in a system the most: Purchase will, contracts, own designed production and law. Favorable purchase will and law would contribute the most for increasing adaptivity for alternatives in production by impacting on power relations. No producers had observed indicators of bacterial resistance from ionophorous coccidiostat usage. Lack of research for many years in the field was troublesome for how to develop the enterprise according to participants. Especially in relation to Norway that has abolished the static use of ionophorous coccidiostats in production. About half of the participants although regarded a shift in research towards consequences from intensive production as equally important as focusing on alternative antimicrobials.

Fosse, Nathan Edward. "Religion, Romance, and Work: Sources of Resilience among Low-Income Men." Thesis, Harvard University, 2011. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10065.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite a resurgence of qualitative research on the cultural aspects of poverty, very few studies have examined how low-income men find resilience in response to the risks of living in severe disadvantage. Moreover, virtually no research has compared how resilience strategies differ between low-income black and white men. These omissions are particularly surprising since low-income men disproportionately experience the life-altering risks of extreme disadvantage, such as criminal punishment, chronic unemployment, drug abuse, and poor physical health. To address these limitations, I draw on recent insights from developmental psychology and from cultural sociology to examine the sources of risk and resilience among black and white men living in severe poverty. Drawing on several years of ethnographic fieldwork, statistical analysis of qualitative data, and on over ninety in-depth interviews with low-income men in Greater Boston, I find striking racial differences in the sources of risk: while white men are more likely to report having a mental health diagnosis and an addiction to opiates, black men are more likely to report living in extremely poor, racially-segregated neighborhoods. Although exposed to different risk factors, I find surprising similarities across racial groups in the sources of resilience: both black and white men respond to the life-changing stressors of extreme poverty by constructing narratives around religious redemption, enduring romantic relationships, and work-related aspirations. Notwithstanding these similarities, I find that white men report greater disaffiliation from organized religion and black men a narrower range of entrepreneurial and athletic vocations. I show that these racial differences in resilience are due to the steep decline in religious affiliation with the Catholic Church among the white poor and enduring economic segregation of the black poor, respectively. In summary, black and white men cope with the risks of living in severe poverty in broadly similar ways: by appeals to religion, long-term romantic relationships, and work; that is, the very ideologically-dominant American institutions from which they are often claimed to be disconnected culturally.

Johannes, Shanél. "Resilient Apartheid survivors and their navigation of historical trauma at the Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town." Master's thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32758.

Full text
Abstract:
The history of South Africa entails colonial and apartheid era violence and trauma (visible and invisible) which ingrained various socio-economic-political-agrarian orders of brutalisation, mass killings, and the displacement of local people from their culture, language, land, agency, and spirituality. Attached to such history, are the intact remnants of the colonial and apartheid eras – national heritage monuments. The Castle of Good Hope, as a national heritage site, is not limited as being the oldest architectural structure in Cape Town, nor is it only a transitioning site that tries to incorporate democratic principles of multiple heritage. This site wields memories of both individual and collective historical colonial and apartheid trauma. Critically, this research project seeks to empirically analyse whether historical traumas are embedded in the displaced landscape and individual and collective experiences as the descendants of the colonised, enslaved, and oppressed. Historical trauma in this context, is often associated with the scholarship on the trans-Atlantic slave trade (from Africa to the Americas). However, little work is done in relation to the descendant's navigation of trauma – the resultant of the Indian Ocean trade and slave trade. The trauma related to the violent occupation of the European nations, transcended itself and was continued through various apartheid policies which has prevailing legacies of intergenerational historical trauma in Cape Town. Thus, this qualitative empirical research project seeks to explore the memories, experiences, and recommendations of resilient apartheid survivors – the descendants of the colonised, enslaved, and oppressed generations – and the ways in which they navigate the Castle of Good Hope as a site of historical trauma.

Koen, Magdalena Petronella. "Resilience in professional nurses / Magdalena Petronella Koen." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/8326.

Full text
Abstract:
Research on human resilience has attempted to uncover how certain individuals, even when faced with adverse working conditions can bounce back without serious psychological harm and continue their development. There is a paucity of information on the concept resilience as it pertains to professional nurses. Relevant information in this regard can equip nurses who are fleeing the profession, or who are becoming physically or mentally ill because they are not coping. Information on the prevalence of resilience in professional nurses and a better understanding of the coping skills and resilient adaptations of identified resilient professional nurses can lead to the formulation of guidelines with strategies for interventions that can facilitate growth in professional nurses and be of benefit to the health care service. This research investigated the prevalence of resilience in professional nurses and listened to the stories of identified resilient professional nurses in order to get a better understanding of their coping skills and resilient adaptations. The data was used to formulate broad guidelines with specific strategies that can be used by hospital managers for in-service training purposes and other programs to facilitate growth in professional nurses. The research was conducted in South Africa amongst nurses in private and public hospitals in the following suburban areas: Potchefstroom, Carletonvi1le, Randfontein and Krugersdorp. A sequential exploratory design was used where one phase is followed by another phase: the first phase was quantitative research conducted with validated psychometric instruments measuring aspects of resilience, namely: The Mental Health Continuum, The Coping Self-efficacy Scale, Sense of Coherence Scale, The Adult Dispositional Hope Scale. The Life Orientation Test-Revised, The Resilience Scale, and The General Health Questionnaire. The second phase was qualitative and explored the stories of the resilient professional nurses by requesting them to write their stories on how they manage to stay resilient and compassionate in the profession followed by focus group interviews also with resilient nurses. The prevalence of resilience in the professional nurses in the first phase indicated the following: 10% with low resilience, 47% as moderate and 43 % with high resilience, but with mostly negative feelings toward the profession and with many considering leaving their current job. The stories followed by focus group interviews with resilient professional nurses produced useful data that could be used to formulate guidelines with strategies for interventions to facilitate and enhance resilience and psycho-social well-being in professional nurses thereby improving the nursing profession and health care service overall.

Egger, Adrian. "Human Sex Trafficking| How Sex Trafficking Victims and Survivors Experience Hope and Resilience." Thesis, George Fox University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10629214.

Full text
Abstract:

Few studies have examined the experiences of sexually trafficked victims and survivors in the United States.

As the population increases it is important to understand how sexually trafficked victims and survivors cope with trauma, experience recovery, and respond to therapy. Research indicates that factors of hope and resilience play a vital role in the way individuals cope with trauma and experience recovery (Masten & Narayan, 2012).

This study examined factors of hope and resilience of 12 sexually trafficked victims and survivors, ages 14 to 21. Interviews were conducted and a mixed-methods design was employed to establish common themes related to how sex trafficking victims comprehend and experience hope and resilience within their lives.

Significant quantitative and qualitative results were found in this study. Six significant qualitative themes were derived from the interviews describing various ways that participants experienced hope and resilience. The themes included (a) Need for positive attachment (b) Positive Self-Portrayal (c) Introspection (d) Adaptability (e) Need for money, and (f) Desire for change.

Additionally, participants also completed the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, the Children’s Hope Scale or Adult Hope Scale, and the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25. Quantitative results indicate a strong positive correlation between depression and anxiety (r = .52, p < .01), a strong positive correlation between hope and resilience (r = .70, p < .04), and a strong negative correlation between resilience and anxiety (r = -.63, p < .03).

The implications of this study may be used to direct clinical focus when working with victims and survivors, placing emphasis on the importance of developing hope and resilience throughout the rehabilitation process.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite varying perceptions and indicators of risk, some children and adolescents labeled at risk are successful in academic endeavors and in life and could be characterized as resilient (Barone, 1999, 2004; Benard, 2004; Waxman, Padron, & Gray, 2004; Wolin & Wolin, 1993). Using a multiple case study design, the purpose of this study was to explore literacy habits and everyday experiences of three African American, female adolescents, who were labeled at risk, yet displayed resilience. Data were collected throughout their senior year of high school, both inside and outside of school, and included observations, interviews, and document analysis. Data collection and analysis were grounded in a social theoretical framework, comprising theories of adolescent literacy, resilience, and identity. Analysis of the individual cases contextualized their unique experiences providing an in-depth understanding of the ways in which the participants enacted their resilient identities. Further, this analysis revealed the complex nature of literacy in their lives and their tremendous literacy growth. The cross case analysis examined overarching themes found across the three participants, which provided a more holistic lens for understanding resilience and literacy by juxtaposing their resilient characteristics and literacy practices with their lived experiences. The findings are discussed, and implications for educators and researchers are provided in an effort to better understand and serve students with at-risk labels.

McCool, Louise Claire. "Resilience factors in parents of children with an intellectual disability : hope and locus of control." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/20967.

Full text
Abstract:
Aims There is an increasing focus on factors associated with resilience in parents of children with disabilities. Two such resilience factors are hope and locus of control. This thesis aimed to review the existing literature on hope and its relationship to psychological outcomes, in parents of children who have a disability. A research study aimed to explore relationships between two resilience factors, hope and locus of control, and their links with knowledge of behavioural principles and challenging behaviour. Methods To address the first aim, a systematic review of the literature was conducted for hope (operationalised using Snyder’s model of hope). Nine online databases were systematically searched using a set of pre-defined criteria. Eligible papers were rated for quality using an established tool (SIGN, 2008) adapted for this review. Secondly, a cross-sectional research study sampled mothers of children with an intellectual disability (N=32) who completed four self-report measures online: State Hope for the Child Scale (based on the State Hope Scale), Parental Locus of Control Scale (child control and parental control subscales), Behavior Problems Inventory for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities – Short Form, and the Knowledge of Behavioural Principles Questionnaire (KBPQ), which was developed for the study. Results The systematic review identified 11 papers; three were rated as good quality, seven rated as fair quality and one rated as poor. Studies included participants whose children had a range of disabilities. Participants in the following groups were overrepresented: white, middle to high socio-economic status mothers, educated to college or graduate degree level and who self-selected to participate. For all studies, mean hope was higher than the median value for each scale used, suggesting the presence of hope in most parents. Hope was positively associated with a range of variables, such as, quality of life, and negatively associated others, including stress. There were differences in the interactions between hope components of agency and pathways, and psychological variables. There were also differences between how maternal and paternal hope related to psychological variables. The characteristics of those recruited to the research study mirrored those found in previous research. The majority of participants were married/cohabiting mothers, living in areas of higher socio-economic status, and caring for a child with a moderate or severe ID. In addition, there was a higher incidence of children with autism spectrum disorder in this sample. Mothers reported feeling hopeful, although they experienced a range of challenging behaviours (mean 14.6 behaviours per child). Due to poor psychometric properties of the KBPQ, data was not included in the analysis; however, some areas of strength and weakness in knowledge were evident. Correlational analysis showed that higher levels of resilience factors were associated with lower levels of self-injurious and aggressive/destructive behaviour. Stereotyped behaviour was not associated with either hope or locus of control. In contrast to previous research, higher hope was associated with a more external locus of control for the child control subscale. Conclusions and implications Hope is an established resilience factor in the general population. Findings from both the systematic review and research study suggest that hope is present in parents and caregivers of children with a disability. The systematic review demonstrated consistent adaptive relationships between hope and psychological variables. This highlights hope’s role as a resilience factor in parents of children with a disability. The research study added to the literature on how maternal hope and locus of control inter-relate in this population. Generalisability of study results was limited by sample size, population characteristics and by scales used. However, overall findings suggest that it would be beneficial to consider resilience factors when planning and evaluating interventions and research. Furthermore, examining specific aetiologies of disability, such as ASD, might also clarify whether these affect the relationships between hope and other psychological variables.

We live in a time of hopelessness, a world inside out to utopias, in a lack of hope. The promise of better life and abundant that the capitalist system, with its consumer society, has pledged not been fulfilled in its fullness in modernity, or rather not for everyone. Despair, existential frustration, violence became urgent topics among the concerns of various knowledge areas. In this particular field is part of this work, which aimed to understand the production of the dreams of young participants of the FundaÃÃo Casa Grande, located in Nova Olinda, CearÃ. "Dreams" here understood as existential dimensions of the projects, therefore, to have well agreed. The doctoral research was developed within the Programa de PÃs-GraduaÃÃo em EducaÃÃo, Faculdade de EducaÃÃo (FACED), Universidade Federal do Cearà (UFC), the line of research Social Movements, Popular Education and the School, specifically in the thematic area Education Environment, Youth, Art and Spirituality, under the guidance of Professor Ercilia Maria Braga de Olinda. The complexity of the issue required a constructive approach in which theory, methodology and experiences of those involved (the researcher and subject) were woven together in a perception of wholeness. The context in which the object is inserted in an interwoven social and economic relationships and cultural special. Nova Olinda is a small town with HDI, according to the IBGE, the lowest in the region of Cariri. There she finds the institution that houses the young subjects of research. The Casa Grande Foundation Memorial Human Kariri - NGO created in 1992, purports to be "a school of cultural management that has as its mission to educate children and youth programs through the backwoods of Memory, Communication, Arts and Tourism." The subjects of this study collaborators were among the young participants of that institution. The theoretical mediation on intellectuals as Zygmunt Bauman, Boaventura Sousa Santos, Marie-Christine Josso, Antonio Novoa, Ercilia Braga, Alfonzo Farms, Peter Singer, Enrique Dussel, Humberto Maturana, Josà Tavares, Paulo Freire, Ernst Bloch, Erich Fromm and others. The methodological approach was interdisciplinary; used to search (auto) biography, both in theoretical and in the procedural aspects, the history of the research can be called a qualitative, collaborative, formative and existential modus how to produce science in which the core is in the person and human life as a major source of all existence. Techniques were used as narrative interview, circles and reflective observation of areas of the organization studied. The narratives expressed youth ways to be hopeful about what-does-not-come-to-be. Showed the action of resilient youth. The thesis is a reflection on the production of dreams as an opportunity to build - in the words of Ernst Bloch - what-does-not-become-good; at last, demonstrate that to dream is a way to contrapose the determination of destiny.

Hand, Michael Philip. "Psychological resilience: The influence of positive and negative life events upon optimism, hope, and perceived locus of control." ScholarWorks, 2004. http://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dilley/11.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to clarify the optimal levels of optimism, perceived locus of control, hope, and degree of adversity experienced in life, in the development and maintenance of psychological resilience. A sample of 328 male and female students from Walden University and Washington State University completed either online or paper versions of a questionnaire consisting of the Life Orientation Test-Revised, Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, HOPE Scale , and the Life Experiences Scale . A series of bivariate correlation and multiple regression analyses tested the relationships between and among the five variables. As predicted, the bivariate analyses produced significant correlations between each of the variables. Contrary to predictions, negative life experience, rather than positive life experience, was predictive of stronger correlations between optimism and hope, optimism and control, and hope and control. The correlation between hope and control varied under differing levels of positive and negative life experience such that both high negative and high positive life experience resulted in the lowest correlation, and intermediate levels (low negative and low positive) resulted in the highest correlation. Hope itself was found not to be significantly correlated with either positive or negative life experience. Stepwise multiple regression analyses explored the relative influence of positive and negative life experience, age, gender and number of life experiences on optimism, hope and perceived locus of control. The analyses revealed unexpectedly strong loadings of age and gender in the predictions of both control and optimism. Suggested implications of the research included clinical approaches to trauma recovery, educational and parental methods to foster development of resilience in children, and military training to proactively prepare for the rigors of combat.

Jeter, Bridget. "Resilience Among Survivors of Adverse Childhood Experiences in Appalachia." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2019. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3629.

Full text
Abstract:
The empirical investigation of adverse childhood events (ACEs) and their relationship with health and well-being outcomes in later life is increasing. Less is known about factors that may promote resilience for those who have survived such challenges, such as how resilience may be facilitated for those with ACEs residing in a marginalized region such as South Central Appalachia. Multidimensional spirituality, social support, stigma related to ACEs, and Appalachian acculturation may serve as both valid cultural factors and potential indicators of resilience. Cross-sectional, simultaneous multiple regression analysis was performed on data collected from 272 adult patients of a South Central Appalachian based medically assisted treatment (MAT) program utilizing PROCESS macro (Hayes, 2018). Participants were 53.8% male, 94.4% Caucasian, 44.9% aged 35-50 years old, and 63.6% employed. Endorsement of increased spirituality was helpful for those in MAT in South Central Appalachia who self-reported ACEs. However, as one endorsed an increasing number of ACEs, spirituality was no longer salient but instead was associated with worsened health outcomes and lessened hope. The three dimensions of spirituality (Ritualistic, Theistic, and Existential) moderated these relationships in similar but nuanced ways. Social support, on the other hand, improved mental health regardless of ACE score. Stigma and Appalachian acculturation were only related to other variables at the bivariate level but not within the hypothesized moderation model. Our study offers preliminary insight into culturally relevant resilience within South Central Appalachia, however additional investigation is needed to better understand the complex facets of health and well-being outcomes in this marginalized region.

Abstract:
This syudy aims to find out the role of self-esteem, hope and external factors in predicting resilience of students in Regional Boarding Elemantary Schools. The sample was 391 students in 6. 7. and 8. grades of Regional Boarding Elemantary Schools in Ankara. A demographic data form developed by the researcher, California Resilience and Youth Developmant Module (CDE, WestEd, 2001
Gizir, 2004), Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (Ç
uhadaroglu, 1985
Rosenberg, 1965), and Children'
s Hope Scale (Kemer &
Atik, 2006
Synder et al., 1997) were used to collect data. Multiple regression analysis for the total sample results revealed that predictor variables explained 69% of the total variance. According to results Hope, and some external assets (Home Caring Relationships, High Expectations, and Meaningful Participation, Community Caring Relationships and High Expectations
School and Community Meaningful Participation
Peer Caring Relationships and High Expectations) were important predictors of resilience. However, Self-esteem and two external assets (School Caring Relationships and High Expectations
and School Connectedness) did not contribute to internal assets of resilience scores. Furthermore, findings showed differences between boys and girls in terms of the predictor variables of resilience. Regression analysis indicated that the model with eight predictors explained 69% of the total variance among females and %70 for males. On the other hand, male students possesed five protective factors predicting resilience, whereas females had three.

Abstract:
Businesses are operating in extremely turbulent and dynamic environments – globally and nationally – and have to adapt to ever–increasing changing circumstances, as well as cope with severe pressure to increase profit margins in an attempt to ensure their economic survival. Adding to this challenge is the changing employment relationship characterised by diversity, complexity and high levels of work stress which contribute to poor physical and mental health and employee disengagement. Individuals are strongly influenced by their work environments, and the well–being of employees is therefore critical as it relates directly to work performance. Positive Organisational Behaviour (POB) emerges within the framework of the Positive Psychology movement. POB takes Positive Psychology to the work environment as it studies and applies positively orientated human resource strengths and psychological capabilities that can be measured, developed and effectively managed. The general objective of this research was to conceptualise the components of Positive Organisational Behaviour (POB) (hope, optimism, self–efficacy, and resilience) from the literature and establish the reliability of established international psychometric measures in a South African sample. Additionally, the relationship between POB and other work–related phenomena, such as job satisfaction and turnover intention, work stress and engagement are also of interest. Various research designs were employed to obtain the necessary data. First, a cross–sectional survey design was used to obtain a sample from the study population at a particular point in time. Data was gathered from all employees in a specific business unit in a chemical factory. In addition to the cross–sectional design, a one–group pre–test post–test design was also utilised to evaluate the effects of a self–development programme on POB. This design also allowed for the investigation of the role of POB in the link between organisational stress and employee health. Finally it was possible iv to test the cross–lagged effects between measurements of POB and Engagement, and investigate causality. The following measuring instruments were used in attaining the objectives of the empirical study, namely a biographical questionnaire, the Dispositional Hope Scale, Life Orientation Test–Revised (LOT–R), Self–Efficacy Scale, Ego–Resiliency Scale, Lack of Role Clarity, Role Conflict, Quantitative and Qualitative Role Overload, Job Satisfaction, Turnover Intention, Quantitative and Qualitative Job Insecurity, Neuroticism, General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). The SPSS Programme was used to carry out statistical analysis to describe the participants in terms of demographic characteristics, investigate the reliability and validity of the measuring instruments, and reveal the nature and relationship of the variables in terms of descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis. The Amos Programme was used to carry out structural equation modelling. Exploratory and Confirmatory factor analysis established the validity of each of the four scales (hope, optimism, self–efficacy and resilience) that constitute POB and showed that only one factor explains the variance in the data, and that the individual scales relate positively to POB. The study provides support for the core POB construct in a heterogeneous South African sample and provides a new instrument for its measurement. Results confirmed a negative relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intention over time. No relationship between POB, job satisfaction and turnover intention could be found in this research. The only significant contributor to participants? turnover intention over time was their baseline levels of turnover intention and their job satisfaction at both baseline and at the second measurement. The moderating role of POB in the relationship between turnover intention and job satisfaction was also not supported. No evidence could however be found that the training programme had a significant contribution to increase job satisfaction and POB with the subsequent lower levels of turnover intention. Results indicated that only the job stressors, quantitative and qualitative job insecurity and the lack of role clarity hold predictive value with regard to POB (T1) and general health. It could also be established that POB (T1) acts as a partial mediator between v job stressors and general health. The negative effect of job stressors can therefore be minimised in the presence of POB. A positive correlation between the stress factors (lack of role clarity, role conflict, role overload and job insecurity), neuroticism and general health is evident from the results of this research. Results also confirmed a positive relationship between the aggregate engagement and POB scores, as well as the positive relationship between the total POB and engagement score. Given the positive nature of all the constructs measured, the inter–correlations were significant at both Time 1 and 2. Results revealed that POB at Time 1 did not predict engagement at Time 2. Strong evidence was found, however, that engagement at Time 1 predicted POB at Time 2. This finding is in line with research which suggests that engagement can facilitate the mobilisation of job and personal resources. In closing, recommendations for the participating organisation and future research were made.

Abstract:
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Occupational stress and Burnout are serious problems in current day organisations. To this end organisations should actively promote positive psychological health and occupational wellbeing in order to harness the full potential of their workforce and increase organisational performance. Studies from the emerging field of Positive Psychology hypothesize that personal resources, like the constructs of Psychological Capital (i.e. Hope, Optimism, Self-Efficacy and Resilience), may contribute to decreased Stress (Avey, Luthans & Jensen, 2009), Burnout (Schaufeli & Bakker, 2001) and increased work Engagement (Avey, Wernsing & Luthans, 2008). Moreover, it has been proven that the Psychological Capital (PsyCap) constructs are state-like and can be developed (Luthans, Avey & Patera, 2008). It may, therefore, be vital for organisations to identify and develop these positive PsyCap factors, which might moderate the effect of Occupational stress on Burnout, as well as curb the initial experiences of Occupational stress and the subsequent development of Burnout in their employees. The presence of PsyCap may also lead to increased Engagement, which is also known to be associated with less Burnout. The aims of this study were to explore the relationships between Burnout, Employee Engagement, Occupational stress and PsyCap in the South African context, as well as to determine whether PsyCap plays a moderating role in the Occupational stress, Burnout relationship. A non-experimental research design (i.e. exploratory survey study) was used to explore the relationships between these four constructs. In this study, Burnout was defined as a condition characterised by fatigue and exhaustion, divided into Personal Burnout (“the degree of physical and psychological fatigue and exhaustion experienced by the person”), Work-related Burnout (“the degree of physical and psychological fatigue and exhaustion that is perceived by the person as related to his/her work”) and Client-related Burnout (“the degree of physical and psychological fatigue and exhaustion that is perceived by the person as related to his/her work with clients”) (Kristensen, Borritz, Villadsen & Christensen, 2005, p. 197). Employee Engagement was defined as “a positive, fulfilling, work-related state of mind that is characterized by vigour, dedication, and absorption” (Schaufeli, Salanova, Gonzalez-Roma & Bakker, 2002, p.74). Occupational stress is experienced when an imbalance exists between people’s perceived environmental demands and their perceived ability to cope with these demands (Cooper, Clarke & Rowbottom, 1999). Lastly, PsyCap was described as a second-order construct which included Hope, Optimism, Self-efficacy and Resilience (Luthans, Youssef & Avolio, 2007). A convenience sample of 209 permanent employees and support staff of a medium size construction company within the Western Cape, South Africa, participated in the research. The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI; Kristensen et al., 2005), the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9; Schaufeli & Bakker, 2003), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS; Cohen, Kamarck & Mermelstein, 1983) and the Psychological Capital Questionnaire-Self Rater Version (PCQ-24; Luthans, Avolio & Avey, 2007) were administered. Consistent with previous research, significant negative relationships were evident between all three dimensions of Burnout and Occupational stress. This indicates that higher Occupational stress is associated with an increased propensity to develop Personal-, Work- and Client Burnout. This was expected as it is known that Burnout develops in reaction to prolonged Stress. The correlational results further revealed that higher levels of Hope, Optimism, Self-efficacy and Resilience (and the PsyCap total score) were associated with lower levels of Occupational stress and Burnout. This suggests that increased levels of PsyCap may probably lead to decreased levels of Occupational stress and Burnout. As expected, multiple moderate positive correlations were evident between the PsyCap sub-dimensions, empirically confirming the discriminant and convergent validity of the dimensions in the South African context. This implies that by developing one of the constructs, the others are also likely to increase. As hypothesised, both Occupational Stress and Burnout was found to relate negatively to Employee Engagement. The results further revealed that higher PsyCap was related to higher Engagement levels and that Optimism and Self-efficacy, as PsyCap sub-dimensions, emerged as the two strongest predictors of Employee Engagement. These results suggest that the development of PsyCap may hold multiple benefits (e.g. increasing Engagement, lessening Stress and subsequent Burnout). Lastly, PsyCap did indeed emerge as a moderator in the relationship between Occupational stress and Personal- and Work Burnout respectively. This suggests that although Occupational stress is inevitable in any work environment, PsyCap as a personal coping resource, can buffer the development of Burnout over the long term. Limitations of the study as well as suggestions for future research were discussed.

Smith, Alexis. "Towards a narrative of hope and resilience : a contemporary paradigm for Christian pastoral ministry in the face of mortality." Thesis, University of Chester, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/600443.

Full text
Abstract:
Analysis of current pastoral care practice, particularly of Christian pastoral care providers and chaplains, reveals a contemporary lacuna in Christian theological frameworks which contributes to North American Christians’ inability to connect a theological understanding of death with the experience of their human finitude despite the presence of considerable literature on death and dying. This gap deprives many Christians of the possibility of finding a unique and specific source of hope and strength within their own faith tradition for facing crisis. This thesis provides a methodology and theological foundation for a uniquely Christian contribution for facilitating hope, resilience--even transformation--throughout the various stages of life until the time of death. Extensive analysis of Christian views of death, as contrasted with non- Christian views, examined through early Christian writings, late Medieval and early Reformation texts, and the late twentieth century work of Moltmann contributed insights into theological frameworks to remedy the gap and also uncovered themes, metaphors, and language that could be important as Christians interpret life experience and dying. The thesis then utilized three contemporary fields of study to apply the insights into a practical ministry model: (1) research in resilience; (2) Narrative Therapy as developed by White and Epston and utilized by Christian therapists; and (3) hermeneutic theory from Capps, Browning, and Gerkin. Insights from these sources were critically evaluated for application in pastoral counselling, support, and education to help people, both in crisis and when facing death, find a substantial hope that transcends the reality of what they are experiencing. This thesis proposes a distinctively Christian response to death that enables people to retain a sense of their own worth and dignity in order to live meaningful lives until they die. Many people find 21st Century healthcare impersonal and non-empathetic; the work of this theses is intended to be important for helping people regain their sense of self and identity, thereby supporting healing and resilience. In addition, the thesis proposes pedagogic and theological reflection methods that would enhance the practice of chaplains in a rapidly changing healthcare environment that will increasingly require them to demonstrate how their practice enhances the wellbeing of those they serve and provides a contribution that is unique and has value to the healthcare system.

Abstract:
Albert Bandura’s construct of moral disengagement has been recognized as theoretically useful for the study of self-destructive behaviors and moral disengagement, and to provide a unique criterion for empirical investigation of United States combat veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The purpose of this project is to better understand predictors related to the disengagement of moral self-sanctions in order that self-destructive behaviors related to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, such as drug and alcohol abuse, and the ultimate self-destructive behavior of suicide, might be mitigated. Charles Snyder’s hope construct, Harold Koenig and Arndt Büssing’s concept of intrinsic religiosity and Corey Keyes’ notion of psychological flourishing are chosen as viable predictor variables. Hope and intrinsic religiosity are found to be significant and to be correlated with moral disengagement. Inferences regarding the results are postulated and suggestions are made for research regarding other possible predictors of moral disengagement. Agentive moral reinforcement is discussed and proposals offered related to increasing psychological resilience and decreasing the agent’s risk associated with moral disengagement.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Adolescence is a time of significant psychological readjustment. A number of young people experience the transition to adulthood as challenging, however many are able to adapt without significant difficulties and thus demonstrate resilience. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of hope and resilience in relation to well-being in late adolescence in a sample of young people aged between 16 and 18 years. Method: A cross-sectional questionnaire design was utilised with a sample of 50 participants aged between 16 and 18 years of age and who were recruited from a college. Participants completed three measures relating to well-being, resilience, and hope. Findings: The results support the hypotheses that hope and resilience are related to well-being. High levels of hope are associated with high levels of well-being and hope is a significant predictor of well-being in young people aged between 16 and 18 years. Implications: Young people may benefit from accessing services that enhance their levels of hope and resilience and emphasise their existing strengths and resources in relation to negotiating the transition to adulthood.

Abstract:
This study is designed to investigate the relationships among affective and cognitive personal qualities leading to psychological resilience among natural disaster survivors. The main assumption of this study is that positive personal qualities might be associated with better psychological adjustment. The study aimed at testing a hypothesized theoretical model accounting for resilience with regard to personal qualities. The sample for this study was composed of individuals who were exposed to earthquakes that occurred in 1999 in Marmara region of Western Turkey. The study hypothesized that the dispositional cognitive and affective constructs (hope, optimism, life satisfaction, self esteem and positive affect) play vital roles in pathways to psychological resilience. Initially hypothesized model based on cognitive-behavioral theoretical foundations was proposed and tested. The cognitive behavior approach holds the idea that thoughts are the determinants of functional and dysfunctional emotions and behaviors. In the model, global self esteem serve as an underlying mechanism that helps to human operate well on the environment. The positive influence of global self esteem can be observed in cognitive process and affective domain in individuals. Simultaneously a person develops an optimistic worldview based on the global self esteem. Self esteem leads a person to construe positive cognitive constructs influencing the general world of view positively and utilize those cognitive. Since thinking patterns influence the affective side of the person, if the person utilizes positive cognitive constructs while interpreting life events, he or she is likely to experience more positive feelings and to be satisfied with life at the same time The hypothesized model was trimmed. Dispositional hope (pathways and agentic thinking), optimism, positive affect, life satisfaction and self-esteem were regarded as independent latent variables while three factors of psychological resilience were valued as the latent dependent variables. Finally, a structural model was suggested to account for the pathways leading to resilience among the Turkish disaster survivors. According to the model, self esteem, dispositional hope and optimism have indirect effect on resilience components via positive affect and life satisfaction. For purposes, the Ego Resilience Scale was adapted into Turkish. Exploratory factor analysis yielded three-factor solution for Turkish disaster survivors and the resilience factors were labeled as Personal Strengths Relating Recovery
Positive Self-Appraisals and Openness to New Experience. The results revealed that the Ego Resiliency Scale is a validated and reliable measure of psychological resilience among Turkish disaster survivors.

Abstract:
The fieldwork for this study was conducted in the West Kimberley region of Western Australia between 1997 and 1999. Qualitative and quantitative information provided by 170 Aboriginal participants enabled an exploration of the context and patterns of Aboriginal alcohol use; Aboriginal perceptions of the alcohol issue, existing interventions, research findings, 'culture' and its role in prevention and intervention; and participants' incorporation of these perceptions into an Aboriginal model for alcohol misuse prevention, intervention and evaluation. Findings were based on the results of individual and focus group interviews, serial model-planning focus groups, documentary data and observation.Study findings generally suggest that in addition to self-determination and support components, 'cultural context' retains an important role for many remote area Aboriginal people. The findings from a small sub-sample tentatively suggest that 'cultural' disruption, in addition to the socio-economic consequences of colonisation and dispossession, may play an important role in alcohol misuse. Consequently, it appears that in combination with self-determination and support components, the strengthening of a locally-defined 'cultural' context may have an important role in alcohol misuse prevention and intervention - an approach frequently unrepresented in existing symptom-focused models and one inviting further investigation. The model developed by study participants expands significantly on existing symptom-focused approaches through a comprehensive life-enhancement focus on aspects of identity, opportunity and hope. This approach adds depth and meaning to understandings of cultural appropriateness and of culturally relevant models for substance misuse prevention and intervention.

The bullying phenomenon analysis using the victims narratives. The tenor of narratives and its analysis interpellates us to the fragility of those who suffered the most diverse types of violence. The first chapter presents a reflection about the society and the education on the XXI Century, the human being and its cultural and social relationships with a panoramic vision of current reeducation, its crisis, influences and reflection in the youngs lives. It makes use of proposals of hopeful look in order to assist the expectancy and necessities of education in this Century. The second chapter defines the term bullying and presents its history. Describes the development and the intensity with which the phenomenon happens from the universal feelings and afflictions that affect children young adults and adults. It deals with its specification and consequences, its prejudice to psychological, emotional and socioeducational formation of individuals victimized by bullying. The third chapter shows the phenomenon victims report and analysis of narratives its individuals and groups aspects reveal existent connections among itself and in scholar environment, they invite us, thus, to the ethic of care. They point out ways to foster resiliency and the acquaintance with tolerance in searching for equality in relationships. In this perspective the victims portray the suffering, expectancy and feelings of impotence facing bullying, its experiences and findings of this phenomenon. The fourth chapter presents the relevance of narratives in the process of subjective development in experiences its implication and reasons about bullying. Emphasizes the process of intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships and the search for answers to understand the phenomenon. In the possibility of these reports its clear the importance of giving visibility and provide the understanding of bullying, legalizing thus, the valve of narratives. In the last chapter there are proposals made using ways capable to contribute for and education faced to hope, based in relationships of respect to others, those who suffer or had suffered bullying, enabling thus, to interfere and react facing so complex and variable phenomenon. We considered prime factors for this research, the analysis of narratives in order to allow the discovery of new elements which might contribute effectively for peace in interpersonal relations; suscitates and develops senses that could integrate and serve fertile ground for the ethic of care the promotion of resiliency the relations of respect and of care to the others in an education faced to hope.

Abstract:
Obesity results from a complex interaction between diet, physical activity, and the environment. The purposes of this study were to identify behaviors associated with resilience to childhood obesity, and to compare the sensitivity of the Figure Rating Scales (FRS) in reflecting Body Mass Index (BMI). Fifty health professionals in nutrition and 35 low-income, parent-and-child pairs completed the study. Children aged 6-11, perceived as “normal-weight” by their parents, were recruited. Five children had a measured BMI above the 85th percentile. Using a picture-sort method, each participant responded to a series of questions about 13 childhood obesity-related messages. Results included comparison between health professionals, parents, and children about 1) familiarity toward each message, 2) frequency in following the recommendation, 3) perception of ease for others to follow, and 4) perception of effectiveness to help prevent childhood obesity. Health professionals and parents had similar familiarity regarding all 13 messages. However, in terms of practicality, health professionals and parents differed significantly in eight messages that they reported “always taught/followed,” seven messages that they “sometimes taught/followed,” and two messages that they “seldom or never taught/followed.” In most messages, children’s observation about what the family followed differed from what parents reported following. In terms of ease for others to follow “Watch portion sizes” and “Tell children to eat all of the meal before getting dessert,” health professionals and parental perception differed significantly. In terms of effectiveness in childhood obesity prevention, health professionals and parents agreed on 12 of 13 messages. Health professionals did not find message “Tell children to eat all of the meal before getting dessert” to be effective in preventing childhood obesity, whereas parents did. FRS and measured BMI were significantly correlated among health professionals (r=0.75), parents (r=0.72), and children (r=0.53 for children ages 8-11, r=0.64 when a mother selected a silhouette for her child). For different subgroups, parent-and-child silhouette selection was closely correlated (r= 0.84). However, correlation between child’s BMI percentile and silhouette was nonsignificant in most subgroups (r= 0.47). In conclusion, FRS was effective among adults and older children (aged ≥8) in reflecting BMI but not among younger children (aged 6-7).

Upton, Jack. "Hope and the city : a case study of the resiliency adaptations of British boys of African or Caribbean cultural heritage attending Year 7 at an urban secondary school." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2012. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/40797/.

Abstract:
Black-British young people are, on average, at least four times more likely to be excluded from school and experience significantly lower levels of academic attainment than their demographically matched white counterparts. This research adopts a social constructionist understanding of resilience to explore how ten Black-British students in an urban secondary school cope within their school and community. It is hoped that the case study of their resiliency adaptations will inform primary and secondary prevention. The interview transcripts were analysed using Grounded Theory methods (Charmaz, 2006). This involved the continuous analysis and comparison of data. This process produced 81 focused codes and 19 memos. These were conceptualised into three categories, which formed ‘Hope Theory.’ This theory suggests that having educational and vocational aspirations are important in shaping how all young people, not just those of black British cultural heritage, engage in school and in moderating the effects of communities that are perceived as unstable and threatening. Key to hoped-for goals is the ability to identify viable pathways towards their completion and a sufficient sense of personal agency or self-efficacy to attempt them. Comparisons were drawn between Hope Theory and the extant literature, highlighting the Working Alliance as a tool that could help EPs and teachers build social and physical ecologies that support hope and resilience in young people.

Abstract:
Evidence that positively disposed employees are inclined to experience greater loyalty to the organisation and fewer intentions to quit may be underestimated. The present study investigated the role that the individual’s career attitude plays in the relationship between positive psychological capital (a composite variable based on hope, self-efficacy, resilience, and optimism) and subsequent loyalty to the organisation. An online survey was administered to New Zealand employees across five distinct industries. Regression analyses on a sample of 518 confirmed that a self-directed and values-driven approach to career management mediates the relationship between psychological capital and affective commitment to the organisation and turnover intentions. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for individual and organisational activities and recommendations for future research are provided.

Abstract:

The current research aims to identify the variables that influence turnover intentions. In particular, this research explored the concept of turnover intentions by investigating the mediating effects of job satisfaction and psychological capital amongst a sample of 70 employees involved in the tourism industry. The study highlights that employees within the tourism industry within the Western Cape were the most satisfied with work content, and the least satisfied with leadership / supervision. The results emanating from the current study indicate that there is a strong, inverse relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intention amongst tourism employees in the Western Cape. Furthermore, the study revealed that a statistically significant, inverse relationship exists between psychological capital and turnover intention. Multiple regression analysis revealed these variables significantly explained the variance in turnover intention.

In this particular field is part of this work, which aimed to understand the production of the dreams of young participants of the Fundação Casa Grande, located in Nova Olinda, Ceará. "Dreams" here understood as existential dimensions of the projects, therefore, to have well agreed. The doctoral research was developed within the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação, Faculdade de Educação (FACED), Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC), the line of research Social Movements, Popular Education and the School, specifically in the thematic area Education Environment, Youth, Art and Spirituality, under the guidance of Professor Ercilia Maria Braga de Olinda. The theoretical mediation on intellectuals as Zygmunt Bauman, Boaventura Sousa Santos, Marie-Christine Josso, Antonio Novoa, Ercilia Braga, Alfonzo Farms, Peter Singer, Enrique Dussel, Humberto Maturana, José Tavares, Paulo Freire, Ernst Bloch, Erich Fromm and others.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The work reported in this thesis addresses the research question of how positive psychological capital related with job search. We developed a longitudinal study for five months to find possible answers to this question, we use a questionnaire in which we analyze the positive psychological components of positive psychological capital (selfefficacy, optimism, hope and resilience), this questionnaire was applied to 82 persons looking for a job, of this 20 were admitted. Our work shows that self-efficacy mediated by resilience has a vital importance in the selection process, this fact point that the candidates with a better perceived self-efficacy were the chosen. This results also points for the fact the organizations prefer candidates confidantes on themselves and on their capabilities, in what they know to do. At the end we present future investigations about this theme.

This study examines the impact of self-leadership training on psychological capital – (self-efficacy, hope, optimism, resilience). We hypothesized that self-leadership training would have a positive impact on the psychological capital of workers over time. In order to test our hypotheses, we conducted a quasi-experimental longitudinal field study with 34 employees of a Portuguese handling organization. The results from a repeated measures analysis supported our initial hypotheses only for resilience and optimism. For both of these variables self-leadership training was found to have a positive impact over time. However, for the case of self-efficacy and hope no effect of self-leadership training was found. Overall, this research contributes towards gaining more insights into the role that self-leadership training plays in the development of workers psychological capital. Furthermore, the implications of this study for the literature and practice on and of these interventions that increase such capital are discussed.

Abstract:
This work aims at understanding hope’s beneficial effects in physical and sports activities. After ensuring the viability and sustainability of Snyder’s hope model (Snyder et al., 1991, 1996) through a validated measurement tool, we tried to identify how hope contributes to success in physical education at school, and hope’s beneficial effects on students’ performance and resilience during a cycle ergometer session. The experimentation results prove Snyder’s hope model reliability from an empirical viewpoint, despite the reservations about its theoretical validity. In a school context, trait hope enables to predict their cycle-end grades, through a mediation of state hope and perceived ability. This data corroborates the existence of a hierarchical model in the concept of hope. Furthermore, hope can also be associated to better performance in experimental situation, after receiving a failure feedback. By having a protective effect on the result perception, hope offers a better resilience, immediately after the feedback. Thanks to the diversified contexts and methods, our research brings light on hope’s effects and consequences in physical and sports activities, and more generally speaking, on the relevance of this yet unknown theory that should be developped and extended to other study populations and contexts

Uys, Martha-Marie. "Towards the development of a coping model for the well-being of patients with transverse myelitis." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/32047.

Full text
Abstract:
Transverse myelitis (TM) is a rare auto-immune inflammatory disease in which the patient’s immune system attacks their spinal cord resulting in an unpredictable degree of neurologic disability, ranging from complete recovery to quadriplegia. TM patients often experience insufficient assistance towards understanding causes of the illness and have little to depend on in trying to deal with it. This study explores psychological strengths and coping strategies used by TM patients in coping with the illness. A theoretical framework of positive psychology with a strong focus on seven constructs, namely positive coping, searching for meaning, benefit finding, hope, sense of humour, resilience, as well as religion and spirituality is presented. The main data collection strategy for this study was the gathering of stories as a form of conversation. These were subjected to thematic analysis by interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) focused on identifiable themes and patterns of living and behaviour. The emerging patterns and identified fortigenic qualities were then considered, analysed and argued in relation to corresponding coping strategies. A model for the psychological coping and well-being of TM patients, based on emphasising the positive and constructive and considering existing models and strategies for the well-being of patients, was developed. The strategic and therapeutic model is presented in easily understandable language for the benefit of any care-giver (e.g. family member, friend or nurse) or the patient him/herself.

Objectives: To examine the effects of an 8-week hope-theory-based group intervention on hope, resilience, and depression in Taiwanese female victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). Methods: A two-group, quasi-experimental design with repeated measures was used. Twenty-nine participants were recruited from a Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention Center and a Women’s Association that provides support services to abused women in southern Taiwan. The experimental group (n = 10) was given 8 weeks of hope-theory-based group intervention; the comparison group (n = 19) had no intervention. Participants chose which group they were in. The effects of the intervention on the participants’ hope, resilience, and depression were compared at baseline, at 2 months, and at 3 months. A demographic questionnaire, the Adult State Hope Scale, the Wagnild & Young Resilience Scale for adults, and the Taiwanese Depression Questionnaire were used in this study. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, Mann-Whitney U, and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, and a two-way mixed-design ANOVA. Results: Two experimental-group participants and 3 comparison-group participants quit the study; thus, data from 24 participants were analyzed. Depression scores were significantly lower in the experimental group after the intervention. Compared with the comparison group, only pathway of hope subscales were significantly different. Despite nonsignificant differences in the measurement of hope and resilience, the 3-month follow-up scores were higher than the baseline scores, which showed an improvement trend. Conclusions: A hope support group specially designed for female victims of IPV effectively reduced symptoms of depression.
