Abstract:
Abstract This book contains 11 chapters demonstrating the incredible complexity characterizing the relationship between peer-to-peer (P2P) loding and commmunity resilience, by considering multiple stakeholder perspectives and examining a diverse array of destination communities. The research within this book clearly shows how P2P lodging can foster resilience by helping to make communities more economically, environmentally and socially sustainable. However, the research also clearly shows how P2P lodging can itself be the external force of undesirable change against which communities may struggle to be resilient, and how P2P lodging can destabilize communities in ways that leave the communities vulnerable and less resilient to future disrupting forces. This conflicting duality highlights the complexity of the P2P lodging phenomenon, and the nuance with which one therefore must understand it. This volume will prove to be so valuable for students, academics, policy makers and community leaders looking to better understand the intersection between P2P lodging and community resilience.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on former foster care youth and resilient functioning in young adulthood, particularly predictors of success and future directions. The chapter reviews the literature on predictors of (a) work and educational competence, (b) competence in close relationships, and (c) self-competence. The chapter reviews empirical evidence for success components related to pre-placement, placement, individual, and contextual factors. The chapter concludes with five recommendations for future research: (1) strength-based developmental assessments of competence and resilience, (2) identification of factors that differentiate predicting specific areas of competence/resiliency, (3) continued theoretically informed work that is guided by developmental science, (4) studies guided by person-centered frameworks and analyses, and (5) studies that identify modifiable placement factors that predict successful outcomes among former foster care youth.

Kammerhofer, Joerg. The Resilience of the Restrictive Rules on Self-Defence. Edited by Marc Weller. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780199673049.003.0028.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the resilience of the treaty, and perhaps also customary, law on self-defence since 2001. It first considers ‘resilience’ in the context of the jus ad bellum and how law can be resilient vis-à-vis changing circumstance, opinions, interpretation, and state practice. It then looks at the indicators for and against resilience by analysing post-2001 developments, paying particular attention to three areas: jurisprudence, scholarly literature in international law, and state and institutional practice. The chapter also explains what ‘resilience’ can and cannot be, and how the law and its perceptions change—or remain the same. Two avenues on the question of what is resilient are evaluated: either the norm or its interpretation (perception) change. Finally, the chapter considers a number of cases in which the International Court of Justice has made pronouncements on and partial clarifications of important aspects of the law on self-defence since 2001.
