Abstract:
The assessment of the ‘quality’ of built heritage is a complex transdisciplinary issue, which both public administrations and real estate developers need to carefully consider when making any interventions. Recent international climate regulations underline that currently around 75% of buildings in the EU are not energy efficient. In Italy, those inefficient buildings are more than 50 years old and, if subjected to retrofit interventions, risk being totally transformed and losing their historical value in favor of a more contemporary use. This work aimed to study the residential heritage of the second half of the 20th century in the real estate market and to understand if, how, and in what measure the building and architectonical qualities are recognized and monetized by buyers. The city of Turin was chosen as a study area, and residential building qualities were analyzed using two quality indicators to perform a GWR on market POIs. The results highlighted that housing historical qualities are not homogeneously recognized by the real estate market, in favor of green ones. This work can help both public and private bodies to identify which ‘invisible’ quality residential buildings are immediately exploitable for enhancement strategies, with more respectful retrofitting interventions and a modern protection policy.

Abstract:
Abstract This study examines the influence of modernity on residential buildings as a new form of expansion built during the Jordanian Rule (1948–1967) outside the Old City of East Jerusalem. Through investigating a sample of houses, the study shows how building typologies, layouts and architectural characteristics depict and inform reinterpretations and adaptations of modernity. Unlike the modernity that emerged out of the western locus, these buildings do not ignore their vernacular roots but adapt to the Palestinian socio-cultural lifestyle, and at the same time borrow from the aesthetic and ideological characteristics of the modern idiom. Based on architectural documentation and ethnographic research, the analyses show that the peasants (Fallahin) made an important contribution to the adaptive modernity of residential buildings in East Jerusalem. The designs were influenced by some aspects of modernity but were also subject to local and cultural determinants. The study contributes to the literature on ‘other modernities’ outside the west, and to an architectural history that is informed by people’s private and individual experience rather than by those working in the profession. This is considered to be a neglected heritage that this article aims to redress.

Abstract:
With the development of technology mankind seeks to know its past, to preserve all that remains of the ancestors. In all countries of the world there are so-called objects of cultural heritage (hereinafter - OCH), which are valuable from the point of view of history, architecture, culture, and art. In some of them, people still live. As with other housing owners of OCH make transactions, conclude contracts of sale. But one of the most controversial topics, is the question of assessing the value of such housing. The apartment in a monument house cannot cost the same as in a modern house. The question of market value of such objects is voluminous, as it requires considering several factors: maintenance and restoration costs. There is no unified methodology of valuation of houses which are recognized as OCH. But there is no a database for simple search for similar objects. Undoubtedly there are open data of the objects of analogues, but it's not always possible to find the necessary one. As an object of exploitation, OCN has a peculiarity - it does not presuppose demolition. According to the international standards all OCH in the "ideal" representation should be preserved forever. This is the peculiarity of assessment and work with OCH, inside which there is residential real estate. In this regard, special approaches to solving these problems are required. The article offers mechanisms and managerial solutions to create a methodology for the valuation of such objects.

Abstract:
Some heritage or protected residential buildings in Nordic conditions require retrofit; however, having limited or no access to the reconstruction of the ventilation system; thus, the native natural ventilation system must be preserved. Some retrofitted buildings are then equipped with modern passive stack ventilation systems implemented with self-regulated supply inlets. Although natural ventilation strongly depends on climate conditions, creating challenges in the design phase as the indoor air quality can not be guaranteed. In this study, such a building was modelled, and a novel self-regulated inlet component was created and applied to the simulation model of the multi-storey residential building with natural ventilation in the Nordic conditions. This IDA ICE model is implemented with a self-regulated inlet model with outdoor temperature control and simulates the yearly performance of a ventilation system, considering the effect of outdoor conditions, such as air temperature and wind direction. The self-regulated device is represented as a one-direction opening based on power-law with variable internal airflow resistance, calculated based on the outdoor simulation temperature. Several case scenarios of the multi-storey residential building with passive stack and windows opening ventilation were created for the analysis. The cases present possible maintenance issues, such as inlet device dirty filter and passive stack ducts, structural differences, such as envelope airtightness level and occupant behaviour, such as internal apartment doors and windows operation. The resulting CO2 concentration, indoor air temperature and air change rate were analysed and compared against indoor air standards. Overall, the building model simulation results coincide well with studies in comparable conditions; the novel self-regulated inlet device was simulated according to the manufacturer data. The resulting simulation model could be used to assess the performance of modern passive stack ventilation under different climatic conditions.

Under the social background of urban-rural relationship reconstruction, the hollowing out of traditional villages is developing rapidly, which makes the traditional residential buildings in China uninhabited and unrepaired due to the influence of economic and cultural factors. The rural revitalization strategy provides inspiration for the architectural design of traditional residential buildings, that is, focusing on cultural heritage and making traditional residential buildings modern. Effective protection of the traditional features of traditional houses is the most basic criterion for the protection planning of famous historical and cultural villages. If only the space protection planning is carried out, and the development of villages based on houses cannot be fully considered, it will undoubtedly cause great damage to traditional villages. This paper discusses and studies how to do the activation and reuse project of Taicang traditional dwellings sustainably from the commercial point of view, so that the transformed object can regain its vitality and vitality, and can further carry out a virtuous circle as a commercial project stably and healthily in the later period, providing new social and commercial values to the surrounding environment, community and local residents.

Abstract:
Kayseri was an important commercial city throughout history, and with the declaration of the Republic, it continued its importance in different areas. The city has many original buildings from the Early Republican Period and was a model of modernisation set on a western ideology. Modernisation of the Republic was started with industrialisation. Consequently, Kayseri became an industrial city in the early 20th century. Investments (both economic and spatial) made by government were later continued by the private sector. Industrialisation was seen as the most important dynamic of development and key to modernisation. This situation resulted in the establishment of a new Kayseri around the industrial area and was viewed as an example for a modern Turkey. These industrial areas were constructed close to the boundary of the city centre. At the same time, the city centre was reconstructed according to modern city planning and the new style (modern style). The ceremonial ground (city square), an urban grid system, wide main transport routes, new public and municipal buildings, which were symbols of international style, were constructed by destroying the historic city centre in the Early Republic Period. The Republic was not only constructing new public buildings in a modern style; it was tried to build a new life with the modern residential areas. Instead of the traditional dwellings, modern houses were constructed to illustrate the new lifestyle together with new functional buildings such as modern education complexes, a community centre, stadium and train station were all constructed to show how to live the modern life. The city gained a new face with the changes starting from 1930. Today, many buildings, belonging to the Early Republican Period, are not being considered in the conservation of cultural heritage and are in danger. Industrial complexes, residential areas, public places are seen as a building stock destined to disappear and be replaced by new buildings. These earlier buildings hold important historical, social, economic and political values. Similarly, construction techniques and materials were also unique for that period. The aim of this study is to draw attention to the 20th century buildings in Kayseri constructed in the Early Republic Period, and classify these buildings under different headings (industry, housing, public space, educational space, open spaces) with the photographs, plans and history, thus defining their values and why they must be conserved. Republic was not only constructed new public buildings in modern style, it was tried to build a new life with the modern residential areas. Instead of the traditional dwellings, modern houses were constructed for point out of new life style and also new functioned buildings like as modern education complexes, community center, stadium, train station were constructed to show how to live in the modern life. Abstract:
The article provides a definition of the term "gentrification", explains its meaning and origin. It is determined that the founder of gentrification is the British social scientist Ruth Glass, who first described the process of gentrification in her book «London: Aspects of Change» in 1964. The paper analyzes and defines the main features and goals of gentrification. The concepts of "revitalization" and "gentrification" are compared and their common and individual features are highlighted. It is noted that the main goal of both processes, both gentrification and revitalization, is the renewal of the degrading historical former industrial areas of the city, with full or partial refunctionalization and adaptation to the modern needs of residents. The paper analyzes the current state and current problems of the industrial and historical territories of Kyiv. As a result, several main zones were identified, where old non-functioning industrial facilities are located. It has been found that over time, the "industrial model" of Kyiv city, formed in the industrial age, gradually turns into unprofitable, inefficient and neglected, which often leads to the degradation of city blocks and even entire districts. The author of the article proposes gentrification as a promising way to restore non-functioning industrial areas and abandoned industrial facilities. As an example of gentrification, author show the project of a new residential complex "Richert Park" in the Podolsky historical district of Kyiv. The article reveals the main aspects of the project and its main ideas. Based on the residential complex "Richert Park", an analysis was made of the revitalization of a historical heritage of architecture (Richert's factory). According to the technique that has been determined, the historical heritage is harmoniously combined with modern new buildings.

Abstract:
The Amur River Basin is located in China’s high-latitude and cold border areas. While inheriting the characteristics of Chinese traditional building, combined with its unique geographical and climatic environmental conditions, the local residential buildings have unique architectural features of cold climate adaptability. Outstanding insulation technology has become the main feature of the area, and has greatly affected the development of modern vernacular architecture. According to the archaeological reports and documents, this article selects ancient architectural sites from different historical periods as the research objects. Based on building restoration, AIRPAK software is used to simulate and analyze the indoor temperature of the building site, and to explore the effects of active heating measures, such as different forms of fire hypocaust system, and passive cold protection measures, such as different types of wall structures. According to archaeological information and simulation data, this paper summarizes the characteristics of the cold climate adaptability technology of ancient buildings in China’s cold border areas over different historical periods. Because of the relatively lagging development background of the Amur River Basin in modern times, the construction of its vernacular buildings continued to use the traditional low-tech insulation technology of ancient buildings to adapt to the cold environment. Therefore, attention and research on insulation technology of ancient buildings can provide a new perspective of architectural heritage protection in cold regions. Establishing a development model that combines archaeology and cultural heritage protection is an effective way to achieve the goals of architectural cultural heritage research and protection.

The prerequisites of transition from the typology of high-rise residential development of dormitory districts, remote from the epicenter of urban activity, to the typology of mixed functionality, interpreting the morphological and symbolic codes of the metropolis historical heritage are considered. The criticism of modernist strategy is based on the understanding of functional zoning as an excessively rigid model of the city. The historic environment with its hierarchical structure of space and parcellation into yards and blocks provides an opportunity for fractal organization of neighborhoods and self-government. The article hypothesizes possible translation of the codes of historic environment into the basis of modern typology of compact buildings, preserving human scale of environment and effective size of neighborhoods.

In addition, the presence of vertical housing is also feared to have an impact on changes in community culture. This study aims to examine the extent to which local wisdom values are applied to star hotels and vertical occupancy in the Yogyakarta Cultural Heritage Area and what direction can be obtained so that star hotels and vertical housing are able to incorporate the value of local wisdom in YogyakartaThis research was conducted using the transforming tradition method. The main principles of the ATUMICS method are about regulation, combination, integration, or a mixture of basic elements of tradition with modernity. The results of the analysis found that the percentage of local wisdom in star hotels and vertical buildings in malioboro 8%, Kraton 15%, Puro Pakualaman 10%, Kotagede 30% and Kotabaru 5%. The average of all is 13.6%. This proves that the value of local wisdom in star hotels and vertical buildings is still low (below 50%). Most star hotels and vertical buildings have not adopted the type of architecture that suits their respective regions. Indonesia has various types of traditional houses, one of which is the most unique architectural work that is the Joglo Pencu (JP) house. It also has a meaning by reason of a symbol which defines as the development of culture and identity. The role of community in the conservation of cultural heritage buildings is very important. However, due to the pressure of urbanization, many heritage buildings transitioned into modern houses. The study area is the historic area of Kudus city, which previously had a significant influence on Islamic architecture due to its residential model. This study aims to provide a social mapping using GIS and primary survey involves community participation of living heritage. As a result, IT becomes the bridge between conservation needs and management patterns of structured organizations that connects all stakeholders. By innovation of digital social mapping, it will be a bridge for the participation of living heritage community with a more transparent and accountable conservation management. In this case, it is shown that Kudus has experienced cultural shifting and transition in traditional houses. The architectural design of the houses that was initially in JP has begun to disappear. The role of the community in social mapping is very decisive in providing data accuracy. Lacking in preservation and maintenance are the main factors, especially the minimum effort from local government. Therefore, active cooperation between cultural communities, communities, and the government is needed to be able to keep the existence of JP intact as a historical heritage building.

Abstract:
Abstract Reducing energy and associated carbon emissions from the existing built environment is critically important to meet our climate goals. Heritage buildings are often presented in the literature as energy inefficient, and uncomfortable to inhabit. There is however little research into residents’ perceptions of comfort in these buildings to support this view, while there is some evidence to suggest that heritage buildings may be more thermally comfortable than generally assumed. This paper interrogates a survey of 147 residents of pre-1940 heritage buildings in Cumbria, UK, to examine residents’ comfort perceptions. This survey is compared with secondary data from other UK studies on residential comfort. Results are elucidated with more detailed responses from interviews with 16 heritage households. Three key findings were made. First, heritage buildings are perceived to have broadly comparable thermal performance to more modern UK buildings by their residents. Second, the survey results and interviews found that residents perceive their buildings to perform particularly well in summer, keeping comfortably cool in hot weather. In contrast, the literature suggests that newer homes often appear to suffer from overheating. Third, although many Cumbrian residents found their buildings draughty, a large percentage would not prefer less ventilation, with case study participants citing their enjoyment of fresh air. These results are highly relevant for successful approaches to renovation and the implementation of the European Renovation Wave. Renovations are often promoted to heritage residents for their comfort improvement potential. However, if buildings are already perceived as broadly comfortable this may not be a key driver. Alternative motivations may therefore need to be identified to drive renovation uptake. The findings also highlight the importance of maintaining positive aspects such as good summer performance.

In accordance with the strategy of the tourism cluster development of Kuzbass which aim is to promote domestic tourism product and expand the range of tourist services, the authors discuss the directions of development of municipal Chebulinsky district as a tourist destination, focusing on its unique historical, cultural and natural heritage. The authors explain the techniques and methods of museumification, reconstruction and updating of historical and cultural heritage with specific examples. They pay special attention to ethnographic heritage of the area, extent of its knowledge and its possible application in modern social and cultural environment, the formation of the tourist product based on it. Authors note that scientists carried out very little the ethnographic studies on the territory of municipal Chebulinsky district of the Kemerovo region, but ritual traditions of the areas are original and unique. The authors pay attention to the fact that the contemporary museumification of historical and cultural heritage requires an integrated approach: the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage is no less important than the preservation of material objects. Important components of material culture that can be the objects of museumification or reconstruction are the immovable objects of historical and cultural heritage: residential and commercial buildings, religious buildings. Giving specific examples of objects, the authors see opportunities for the development of religious tourism in the area. In addition, the authors emphasize the promotion of information about tourist and recreational cluster in the information space. Summing up, the authors pay attention to the fact that the project-innovative development of a tourist destination to Chebulinsky municipal district of the Kemerovo region is feasible through the organization of special events. For these events, it is necessary to create a complex of integrated projects, which is socially significant for the region strategic.

Abstract:
The demographic, political, social and economic evolution of the last 40 years has shown how difficult it has been for the residential architecture of the 1960s to adapt to the needs of the turn of the century, in many cases suffering abandonment by the administration and the citizens themselves. However, these architectural ensembles, grouped together in the so-called “barriadas” (neighbourhoods), represented a change of era and a conceptual transformation in the way the city was built. This has led various international organisations to consider the need to study and protect them. The El Plantinar neighbourhood, located in the city of Seville, is one of these architectural complexes that are in a situation of vulnerability. The aim of this article is to propose a research methodology that, from different scales and with the incorporation of new players, allows us to understand these modern assets in their maximum dimension and to define their unique heritage. The methodology is structured in two phases. In the first phase, a general study of the neighbourhood is carried out on three scales: urban, object-typological and perceptive. In the second phase, the cultural attributes of the urban ensemble, of a patrimonial nature to which values can be assigned, are identified. The results provide very heterogeneous attributes that contribute to enrich the neighbourhood beyond the traditional scientific-technical and objectual vision that accompanies the assets of the modern period. The conclusions indicate that a methodology that takes into account different approaches and scales is necessary to incorporate these neighbourhoods solidly into the heritage landscape.

Abstract:
This article gives an extensive, detailed historic overview of Baghdad's unique architectural heritage from its ancient Sumerian roots in design through the Islamic and modern periods by an Iraqi professor of architecture. The functionally and aesthetically integrated residential architecture of the ancient Sumerians, its labyrinthine network of abutting houses with open inner-courtyards, ingenious ventilation systems, and enclosed balconies (shanāshīl) that formed the warp and weft1 of the fabric of the urban society which it supported for millennia is disappearing. The ancient patterns which still survive in Baghdad are not only emblematic of Middle Eastern architecture but are the essential imprint of Babel (Babylon) – the mother of all cities. The author demonstrates how modernization and rapid changes brought on by economic growth and population explosions led to unregulated building projects that were often conceived and implemented by foreign firms in abject disregard of the unique and irreplaceable cultural heritage of Iraq. Landmarks of culture have already been lost, and there is much still to lose, but it is not too late if proper funds, urban planning and action at the level of the individual can be marshalled to preserve the living museum of Baghdad's eternal architecture that is the most conspicuous physical expression of its social, cultural and historic identity.

Abstract. The use of digital tools and approaches related to the ICT field is now of particular importance for the knowledge and enhancement of the modern architectural heritage. The contribution intends to focus on the theme of cognitive analysis and digital documentation of some examples of public residential buildings of historical and testimonial value of the period following the second World War, in Italy, in order to define appropriate recovery strategies. Unlike buildings of historical-monumental importance, which have been the subject of studies and surveys involving the use of digital tools for several years now, little interest is still attributed to the knowledge of the building heritage of the second half of the Twentieth Century to which historical value is attributed. The interventions in the 1950s by INA Casa and U.N.R.R.A. Casas, in Italy, constitute interesting case studies that are worthy of further research and cognitive analysis based on holistic and multi-scalar approaches. In this context, the surveys and research in progress on the historical buildings of the rural village “La Martella” in Matera (1951–55) are an interesting example of experimentation using GIS-BIM digital platforms for the implementation of a multiscale knowledge methodology (from the territorial scale, to urban blocks to individual buildings) that provides for the structuring and implementation of an integrated information database (Common Data Environment) aimed at defining recovery strategies for the protection and enhancement of the historical buildings of the village, through the concept of interoperability for the systematization of archive sources and data obtained through surveys on the existing situation.

Abstract:
Introduction: The modern heritage of 20th century Spanish architecture, particularly in the city of Madrid, includes an extensive range of high-quality social housing that, due to its peripheral location and economic restrictions, can be lost without public policies to preserve it. Updating this housing to meet the current habitability requirements, as well as enhancing and transforming it into high-quality 21st century residential buildings, is a task that cannot be postponed. Purpose of the study: The issues of energy efficiency, habitability and accessibility are very salient today, so it seems pertinent to recover relevant examples of 20th century architecture and investigate to what extent the parameters with which they were designed are still valid. Methods: This paper reviews housing case studies in two neighborhoods, Poblado Dirigido de Fuencarral and Colonia Juan XXIII de Carabanchel, comprehensively analyzing the original buildings and their current rehabilitation. This includes comparing the buildings’ energy efficiency before and after the intervention carried out. Approach: This study verified that in both cases, an attempt was made to recover several elements of the original design during rehabilitation. Results: We found that both projects were originally committed to creating an open, pedestrian-friendly city with abundant vegetation, which is still a valid value today. Despite the economic restrictions at the time of construction, both projects used advanced energy strategies, such as the passive design offered by cross ventilation, the unusual thermal insulation envelope, or the efficient district heating. Novelty: In addition, this paper aims to incorporate the heritage of the great mid-20th century architect José Luis Romany, author of both projects, into modern Spanish architecture.

Abstract:
Contemporary architecture in the Arab-Islamic World is facing the challenge of finding a distinctive character that combines both the heritage of the regional building traditions and the modern society lifestyle. Since few apparent attempts aim to articulate an identity for regional architecture, this research investigates the work of the Jordanian architect, Ayman Zuaiter. Their jobs attempt to integrate the cultural values and traditions with the contemporary Arab-Islamic architecture and seek to express and represent the spirit, values, and underlying principles of the regional heritage. This study aims to offer a deeper understanding of design as both method and production, contributing in turn to understanding regional and socio-economic considerations behind forms. This study will be based on the analysis of one of Zuaiter's residential buildings, Al-Tabba'a House. The research method is mainly exploratory, which combines a review of the project primarily in terms of cultural context; responding to the site itself (understanding regional and socio-economic considerations behind forms); concepts and how techniques helped them appear the way they are; multiple personal interviews with the architect aiming to understand his design strategies to revive traditions; and the external influences that affect the design process. This study shows that Islamic Values could be delivered through each design feature in Ayman Zuaiter’s work of contemporary Arab architecture.

It is urgent to act currently on the problems of overconsumption of energy as well as the environment and the economy. Energy is a direct mechanical source of many devices of an artificial thermal environment of the modern habitat. To cope with the consequences of the exceed consumption of domestic use, architecture takes part by focusing on the old constructive and functional solutions. The researchers are interested even fascinated by ancient and vernacular architecture; its buildings are a masterpiece of urban planning in matters of environment. Our study has clearly chosen as an example The Mzab valley; a qualitative and retrospective analysis which aims to describe and classify all the solutions and traditional climate strategies developed by the Mzabites to produce a real thermal comfort and a residential heritage to fight against climatic solicitations. We have checked and observed in parallel if these strategies are convergent or divergent with the recommendations and the needs of the specific comfort in our case study and predetermined in this paper by the method of Givoni. This analysis has shown that Mzabite architecture symbolizes an ancient bioclimatic knowledge, Its strategies generate a perfect harmony between climate, habitat and occupant, they formed an inspiring reference and exemplary lessons available of the designers; by re-adapting these ancient solutions and techniques of our ancestors with a suitable manner to contemporary architecture, and contributing to the improvement of comfortable climate.

Abstract:
The problem of research and preservation of architectural heritage is more relevant than ever in Ukraine today. This problem is exacerbated under the influence of modern unstable socio-political processes and possible risks associated with the threat of military aggression from the Russian Federation. Therefore, the historical site of the city of Lviv, the oldest part of which is included in the UNESCO world heritage, needs increased attention and security measures from the authorities, the public and the scientific community. Door and window fillings need special protection, as the materials they are made of, namely wood, metal and glass, are short-lived, which emphasizes the relevance of this research. The Secession period in the art and architecture of Lviv was studied by many scientists, architects and art critics, among whom Yuriy Biryulyov is considered the main researcher in this topic. The purpose of the study is to determine the stylistic features of the solution of the entrance wooden doors in residential buildings built in the period between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. in Lviv. The study of the stylistic features of the gates was carried out using the methods of compositional analysis (Idak, 2011), which included, in particular, the analysis of the compositional scheme of the doors (grid of axes: first, second and third order), analysis of the placement and shape of light openings (slit openings), analysis of placement, the configuration and nature of the decorative elements that decorate the door, as well as the analysis of the ratio of the proportions of the main elements of the door to the human scale. After that, the study conducted a comparative analysis of the selected doors, on the basis of which common and distinctive characteristics were determined. Based on this, as well as based on the works of researchers of Lviv architecture, the characteristic features of the Secession style were formulated, which were used by craftsmen on Lviv gates made of wood in the Kin period. 19-beginning 20th century.

Abstract:
There are almost 18% of housing stock in Kyiv, that have exhausted their operational resource and do not meet the current requirements for comfortable and energy efficient residential buildings. A significant part of such a stock is represented by the residential buildings of the mass series of the first period of industrial construction, the life span of which cannot exceed 50-70 years. European countries have accumulated quite a wide experience in solving this problem, but in Ukraine, it has not been properly implemented. The paper presents the results of a study of the existing buildings of Kyiv as a potential object of programs and projects for complex reconstruction of outdated housing stock, which has exhausted its operational resource and does not meet modern requirements for comfort and energy efficiency. Based on the Address list of residential buildings for complex reconstruction of blocks, formed by state administrations of each Kyiv district, materials of the Program for economic and social development of Kyiv for 2021-2023 and statistical data on the city of Kyiv, an analysis of the volume of housing stock, which can be classified as outdated, was made. Based on the analysis, the authors proposed a typology of outdated housing stock, namely: historical type buildings (cultural heritage monuments, background historical buildings), barrack type buildings, “stalinka” type buildings (ordinary, “nomenclatura”-intended), houses of the first period of industrial housing construction – “khrushchevka” type buildings (panel and brick). Both quantitative and qualitative characteristics of each type of buildings, as well as the total amount of outdated housing stock in the city of Kyiv are given. Differentiation of buildings will allow more efficient use of various methods of outdated housing stock reconstruction, from complete demolition to compaction, modernization, reconstruction and restoration. The analysis of spatial localization of outdated residential buildings in the context of administrative districts of Kyiv was carried out with the distribution of their volume by type.

Abstract:
Manufacturing has historically been the driving force behind economic growth and structural change. During the financial and economic crisis, governments in Europe provided short-term assistance to industries that had fallen into disrepair by converting them into market-oriented industries (such as steelmakers and car manufacturers). As cities grow and the density of megacities increases, the need for their "renewal" began to appear, which is characterized by the transformation of non-functional buildings and old abandoned buildings for the purpose of further operation. The state and private organizations were interested in the transformation of such territories and actively invest in these projects. Industrial complexes are transformed into areas with residential apartment buildings and offices, their own social infrastructure, transport, entertainment reflecting the needs of modern society. In the future, urban areas can benefit greatly from new opportunities. All over the world, industrial territories are an integral part of cities. The article discusses the experience of reconstruction of industrial zones in Russia and abroad. The industrial heritage is adapting to the new context of the city, using the principles of sustainability, economy and aesthetics

Abstract:
Most of China’s historic districts are located in urban centers with excessive building density and possess rich historical, cultural, scientific and aesthetic value. However, historic districts lack infrastructure and specific plans for emergency response compared to modern residential areas in cities, creating a social inequity trap for the residents in both. In addition, as valuable material cultural heritage, the usual conservation of local culture and the ecological environment conflict with anti-epidemic requirements. This study proposes a system of strategies for responding to public health emergencies that can address the above issues. Through the methods of policy refinement and the application of the concept of normal and disaster time conversion, the strategic system was constructed, including five major aspects: emergency preparedness programs at the planning level, installation of modulized variable devices, environmentally friendly health protection, disaster prevention preparation at the spatial level, and plant configuration. It is beneficial to improve the disaster prevention system for special urban communities and provide a reference for emergency planning in the future regeneration process of historic districts.

Abstract:
Vernacular architecture and its responses to natural factors through architectural patterns are recognized as expressions of bioclimatic principles and national architectural responses to location. The vernacular architectural heritage of architecture is one of the most important factors in preserving and developing the cultural identity of a nation. Through research on the vernacular architecture of the coastal area of Skadar Lake, our goal is to recognize and potentially valorize the local traditional characteristics of authentic houses as ecological building patterns, which also express the fundamentals of sustainability principles. Although examples of vernacular architecture are disappearing due to contemporary globalization, and a mere imitation of motifs from past periods occurs, the historical specifics of architectural expression remain the inspiration and catalyst for future achievements based on the idea of preserving the local and regional recognizability of architecture. This research resulted in a redefinition of vernacular, bioclimatic concepts in a way that preserves construction techniques, which basically have an ecological approach, and, at the same time, provides modern solutions with bioclimatic concepts. The case study conducted on the village of Karuč in the area of Skadar Lake presented in the paper contributes to revealing the potential of bioclimatic principles and the energy rehabilitation of vernacular architecture in order to revitalize it through a new contemporary architectural expression. This study’s contents propose revitalization solutions at two levels of the following: settlement and typical houses. The study also aims to create a model, that is, a modern expression of a characteristic Karuč house, with improved functionality and energy characteristics for national architecture. Identifying all the basic building patterns, including the positioning of buildings, construction, the application of available materials, and the design of buildings, this paper presents conditions for the adequate valorization and preservation of authentic vernacular architecture and creates guidelines for further upgrades and the bioclimatic revitalization of vernacular architecture in a certain location.

Abstract:
The article critically examines the design and construction of pedestrian areas, considering the specifics of transport services in the largest cities of Russia, cultural heritage and scale of modern mobility of the population. It also emphasizes the need to solve the problem of formation of pedestrian streets, adjusting the relevance of the proposed small urban design, without forgetting the main purpose of the street - to ensure the movement of pedestrians. At the same time, it is asserted that the content of the street is a showcase of the actual functional purpose of objects that are placed in a certain place, often with along history, and not a contrived decoration, often out of place borrowed from foreign practice. In order to identify public opinion about thelatest trends in the organization of pedestrian traffic, a preliminary survey of residents, mainly with children or grandchildren, was conducted, and it showed the failure of the idea of carrying out yard functions on the street for our practice. At the same time, the return of the experience of the XII-XIII centuries, when vehicles were not allowed into the yards and two exits from residential buildings were created: one "front" and the other "black", overlooking the economic yard, helped to solve the modern problem of separation of space for pedestrians and transport.

Abstract:
The article considers the main points on the decaying and dilapidated historical building in the city of Odessa. The city developed from the typical Empire style of the residential and the public buildings in the beginning of the nineteenth century to the replacing of the style for 70 % with eclecticism and modernism presented in the apartment buildings, railway stations, educational facilities and medical building complexes. The research of the current condition of the buildings and constructions in the historical area of the city is presented by the author in order to provide changes in the field given. The retrospective review of the historical building formation and the problematic issues of the historical urban fabric as well as the ways of solving the problem are clearly defined in the article. A specific separate paragraph is dedicated to the importance of the issues above¬-mentioned not only in the constructive and art-architectural destination, but also in finding the beneficial solutions on functional occupancy rate of the historical building in a state of constantly changing conditions of the extensively developing city. It is recommended that the scientific production groups are to be made in order to define, to systemize and to calibrate the parts of the historical range of the city. The groups are to include the experts in different fields such as the architects, the technologists, the constructors or the designers, the historians of a local lore as well as sculptors, marketers, the economists, the builders and the students, of course. The most appropriate way to make such a group is to create it based upon the Odessa State Academy of the Architecture, where the scientific and the laboratory bases are concentrated. The only thing needed to get out of the suspended animation is the State support. The author suggests using some methods of the rehabilitation of the historical city heritage: the so called facadization (the Leningrad method) and the method of scientific restoration. It is necessary to note that the integrated scientific investigations on the issue are to be fulfilled before taking any practical decision as for the further fate of the historical building heritage. Taking into account the fact that the image of the city is represented both by the number of parks, squares and by its buildings and their facades, the only thing is to save it and to set it a goal, a prior task to preserve that heritage. The state program or the private business can be leading in solving the problem. One must keep to the “L and K” rule: the Law and the Knowledge. It is advisably necessary to invent or to find a new typology for the architecture of the past centuries and the functional filling, relevant to the 21st century.

Abstract:
The strategy for the development of modern cities includes an analysis of a comfortable urban space, with the subsequent goal of improving the quality of life of the city's population. The main transit type of public space is the streets and avenues of cities. The study provides an analysis of the modern use of public space in city streets, as well as recommendations for the development and formation of a comfortable territory of Yekaterinburg streets for city residents. Recommendations after the analysis, when implemented, will allow the main city avenue to be not only comfortable for residents of Yekaterinburg, as well as visitors from other regions and foreign students, the avenue will attract domestic and foreign tourists even more. The subject of the study. Features of the current state of urban space and prospects for further modernization of urban areas and restoration of residential and public buildings. For the first time, the analysis of the current state of Lenin Avenue was carried out, the missing positions in the design code of the Yekaterinburg landscaping concept were identified and the points of recommendations for further implementation in architectural subject-spatial characteristics were indicated, taking into account sociological factors. To improve the organization of the public space of Lenin Avenue, it is proposed: 1. Exclude the presence of "visual noise" outside the points of attraction; 2. To restore the facades of residential and public buildings facing the avenue, including objects of historical and cultural heritage; 3. To give in general terms a unified design to small architectural forms; 4. Highlight an additional "image of the city"; 5. Creation of a full-fledged lighting line in a single style, along the entire avenue; 6. Organize linear landscaping along the roadway and pedestrian zone, plant perennial herbaceous plants; 7. Create a separate path for the bike infrastructure, additional bike parking; 8. Select a surface street pedestrian crossing instead of an underground one, with priority for pedestrians; 9. Exclude sidewalk fencing, which is not appropriate in this case.

Abstract:
This article highlights the history of construction the most ancient in the Belgorod region Russian Orthodox Uspensko-Nicholas Cathedral, which has survived to the present day. Bibliographic information relating to the history and time of church construction, erected in the era of Moscow baroque – a new style in the architecture of Moscow region of the late XVII – early XVIII centuries, is given. This style is characterized by consistency in the mass ratio, the pomp of white-stone decor, in which the ornamental and order elements of Western European baroque –- cartouches, “torn” pediments, columns and pilasters with plant capitals – are peculiarly interpreted. The location of the Cathedral is described. It is built in the former residential settlement Zhiloy, located to the west of Belgorod, constructed according to the general plan of 1768 by architect A.V. Kvasov after the fire of 1766. In addition, the modern urban situation of the cathedral’s location in the structure of modern urban development is presented. Historical planning frame is considered. The space-planning and space-spatial solution of the cathedral church in historical chronology, as well as constructive solutions of the cathedral’s octagon on cube, bell tower and two-column refectory, built in the first half of the XIX century, the decorative design of the facades and interiors are analyzed. The main construction stages of the church from its creation to the restoration works carried out in 2005 are considered. Strengthening and restoration on the preservation of cultural heritage are described. Cartographic material, plans building at different construction stages, archival and modern photographs of the exteriors and interiors, both during and after the restoration process, are given.

Abstract:
The debates about national and local architecture in Canada go as far as the construction of the first permanent structures. The young country had to invent its native architectural tradition and at the same time to mitigate European influences. Introducing the notion of longing – or nostalgia – into the debate on Canadian design and architecture this study argues that European grandeur, innovations as well as financial and cultural magnitude often played an important role in the desire to create artistic projects including public and residential buildings. The interest in the Gothic revival and the forging of the Neo-Gothic style can be tied to a nostalgic feeling for the British Isles (their land of origin) and also for the utopian notions of unalienated artistic production during the Romanesque and Gothic periods championed by British philosophers Augustus Welby Pugin (1812-1852) and John Ruskin (1919-1900). The cultural horizons of those who participated in the forging of the national style included both the notion of modernity and its opposite (the anti-modern), the dream of the new but also the dream of the old. The article argues that such a complex inspiration is at the core of any modernist production, for it brings together and blurs the modern and anti-modern, the old and the new, and by doing so, it generates constant innovation. At the core of forging the nationalist style, there is also a desire to incorporate European history and heritage, not to negate or reject it. Finally, it argues that Art Deco became the vehicle that helped to popularize the ideas of modernity propagated by avant-garde artists and architects.

Abstract:
To date, the Serbian architecture of the nineteen-fifties has not yet been more comprehensively studied albeit the fact that there are sufficient sources, data, literature, and structures built at that time. The reason for the lack of interest in architecture of that period may be found in the relationship between the non-understanding and insufficient valuation of architectural results of the modern architecture of the time, but also in the general opinion that the immediate postwar years were the time of a poor social housing development, which is also characterized by the lack of distinct architectural values. Furthermore, there has been an obvious unreadiness to analyze in more detail and in time distance the subject of the sociorealistic construction, which was also partially present in this period. After a short period of the so-called Socio-Realism 1945-1950, characterized by reconstruction of the war devastated country with extensive participation of youth brigades, the housing construction in particular got a big boost, considering the changes in population structure, as well as the fact that a significant portion of population moved from rural areas to towns. The subject decade of the newly established socialist society was, in every respect, marked with upward path of economic, political and social development, which was an important base for overall architectural and cultural construction. This was the time when Serbian architects of different generations created a great number of works, which were diverse in they contents. The architects of older generation often created their most important works, while young architects, looking into future, but also into own architectural heritage and accomplishments, achieved their first significant results, thus generating autochthonous architectural trend and expression which would soon be recognized as the Belgrade School of Architecture. In the conditions in which the Serbian architecture developed, it actually meant fitting within the world development trends along with preservation of own and regional specificities.
