Abstract:
This thesis examines factors that influence a male, first-term enlisted reservist's decision to remain in the Selected Marine Corps Reserve (SMCR). Specifically, the logistic regression model was used to determine the relative impact of bio-demographic and both pecuniary and nonpecuniary job factors on retention. Models were developed for both nonprior (NPS) and prior active service (PS) reservists. The database was a combination of the responses of participants in the 1986 Reserve Components Surveys and their personnel records from the Reserve Components Common Personnel Data System. The thesis concludes with reserve policy implications and recommendations for further research. Important findings of this thesis were: Reserve income has a statistically significant and positive impact on SMCR retention. Civilian income was not found to be a factor. Educational benefits, civilian job-related training, and retirement benefits were found to be significant factors in retaining prior service reservists. Abstract:
While it is commonly known that combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has profound, long-term effects on soldiers, its effects on spouses of affected soldiers are less understood. Some spouses who provide care for soldiers with PTSD develop symptoms that are similar in nature. These symptoms include but are not limited to depression, anxiety, isolation, hypervigilance, and a strong startle effect. This study explored the lived experiences of 8 spouses of Army Reservists who returned from deployment in either Iraq or Afghanistan with combat-related PTSD. This study used the couple adaptation to traumatic stress model to explore the couple's response to traumatic stress. The study also includes a discussion of the history of PTSD, including changes in criteria with the revisions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), including the most recent change in the latest version (DSM 5). Although secondary traumatic stress is not recognized in the DSM 5, an increase in awareness may result in a better understanding of mental health needs within the military culture. The study consisted of 8 semi-structured interviews among 8 female spouses of Army Reserve soldiers, using Colaizzi's method of data analysis. The results of this study identified psychological distress in all participants in connection with relationship changes, psychological distress, and lack of available mental health services. The results of this study may assist mental health professionals understand that the mental health needs of spouses of Reservists often differ from those of active duty spouses. This study may support social change by promoting the need for additional training for counselors who work with this population.

This thesis develops a multiple regression model using regional and unit characteristics to estimate commuting distances of U.S. Army Reservists. The data were obtained from a 1988 file established by the Defense Manpower Data Center containing locational and biodemographic information on 238,174 enlisted reservists. A random sample of 91 reserve centers was selected for the analysis. The logistic and normal distributions were evaluated as possible candidates for fitting the commuting distance distribution. It was found that a power transformation of the fractional distance traveled fit both distributions quite well. Parameters for the two distributions are obtained through a method of maximum likelihood estimation. Finally, a multiple regression equation is used to estimate the parameters of the commute distance distribution as a function of reserve center and market characteristics.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research study was to explore female service members, reservists, and veterans feelings regarding service related trauma and what they want clinicians to know regarding treatment. This was a qualitative study that used a snowball sample to interview seven women; data collected was transcribed from recordings, analyzed, and categorized into themes. Qualitative themes included vulnerability, connection to clinician, and mental health stigma. Potential changes endorsed included understanding gender roles, clinician’s ability to build better therapeutic relationships, and decreasing mental health stigma. Limitations included not being able to generalize the study as service members, reservists, and veterans were not looked at independently from one another. Recommendations for the social work profession include upholding the dignity and worth of each client, understanding client’s perceptions, and advocating for policy changes. Future research will be fundamental in understanding how to provide better mental health treatment to females in combat military roles.

This study examines the factors that correlate with first-term attrition of enlisted Marines and officers in the Selected Marine CorpsReserve (SMCR). The data for this study were provided by Headquarters Marine CorpsManpower and Reserve Affairs for fiscal years 2001 through 2014. We create two separate multivariate models to identify the causes of attrition for both populations. The enlisted personnel model used finds that rank and education have the greatest effect on the attrition behavior of enlisted Marines, while the Armed Forces Qualification Test scores and waiver have the least effect. For officers, rank has the greatest effect on the attrition probability, while age and unit type variables have the least effects. Numerous other variables under different categories were found to have significant effects on Marine SMCR attrition behavior. Some variables have different effects on each population, such as marital status. This variable is associated with higher attrition rates for enlisted personnel, while it decreases the attrition probability of officers. Other variables in this category include Physical Fitness Test scores, unit type, and number of dependents.

Abstract:

Few studies exist that explore the reintegration experience of female reservists who served in a combat environment. Consequently, reintegration programs are gender neutral and applied as a one size fit all approach. Female veterans are the fastest growing section of the veteran population reporting mental health problems during post deployments. Moreover, the new norm is a heavy reliance on Guard and reservists in national defense. In addition, women comprise a larger percentage of the Guard and reserve population than the active duty force. A qualitative, phenomenological study using the Moustakas modification of the van Kamm method of analysis was conducted to explore the lived experiences of a representative group of female reservists who participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) or Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and their return back to families and communities. The data from these female veterans was analyzed to highlight the experience from activation to deployment and participation in OIF/OEF and returning home, reintegrating in families and communities. Five themes emerged from the findings—i.e., propensity for military service, range of emotions, support, unique gender experiences, and social status. These themes may be of value to local, state, and federal leaders, as all public levels are associated with reservists at each stage of their active and inactive military experience.

Abstract:
This thesis is divided into three parts. The first section is a systematic literature review focusing on the British literature regarding attitudes towards mental health in the military, and what stops British military personnel from accessing care. Eleven papers were identified and reviewed. Each paper is examined and discussed in relation to each other, along with findings from abroad. The current literature base is thought about and comments regarding suggestions for future research are made. The second part is the empirical paper which, explores the experiences of women in health professional roles in both civilians and military environments and have completed one operational tour. This uses the qualitative methodology of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) in order to understand lived experience. Nine civilian women who are also members of the Army Reserve took part in the research. Three super-ordinate themes with nine sub themes were identified from the analysis. The third part comprises the associated appendices that are referred to throughout the text along with a reflective statement.

The purpose of this secondary analysis was to understand the coping and adaptation processes of reservist soldiers and one family member throughout the first year following deployment to Iraq. A directed content analysis based on the Roy (2009, 2011) conceptualization of coping and adaptation was accomplished on 75 interviews from 20 Army Reserve and family participants. Research questions were; which contextual stimuli affected the coping capacity for dealing with focal stimuli; military deployment and reintegration. Second, whether resourceful and focused coping at Wave 1 positively influenced the adaptation level at 52 weeks. Third, whether physical and fixed coping at Wave 1 negatively affected the adaptation level at 52 weeks. Fourth, whether coping capacity varied during the reintegration year. Findings confirmed primary study outcomes (MacDermid, 2006) where participants described individualized reintegration. Informants' depictions were different from the previously published, "New Emotional Cycles of Deployment." Contextual stimuli were complicating or protective and exerted substantial influence on managing the deployment and reintegration. Cognitive-emotional processing the meaning and repercussions of the deployment is part of the reintegration process. Resourceful and focused coping positively affected the adaptation level at 52 weeks. Insufficient reports of physical and fixed coping precluded determining its effect. Coping efforts were a discrete measure of coping extrapolated from narratives, and were found to fluctuate throughout the year. When demands intensified, participants accelerated their coping efforts as predicted by the Roy adaptation model (2009). Coping strategies were effective or ineffective. Concepts of transcendence, transformation, and hope were understood in new ways within the Roy model. Transcendence in individuals and groups was further explicated. Spirit was another concept from Roy's work that was observed in the participants. Implications for policy, theory, nursing practice, education and research are discussed. Moon, Nathan. "Effects of deployment on committed relationships| Relationship satisfaction of partners of regular and Reservist army soldiers." Thesis, Pepperdine University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3594132.

Full text
Abstract:

Having a partner as a part of the military induces a level of great stress. There is an absence of literature focusing on the unique circumstances that Reservist and National Guard soldiers and their families face with deployment. This project aimed to explore the unique challenges of part-time military families, looking specifically into how partners of reservist military and regular military soldiers significantly differ in their description of the deployment experience and relational/marital satisfaction, as well as if deployment experience factors or certain demographic characteristics of partners of soldiers predict reported rates of marital satisfaction. A snowballing method to recruit participants was used in which participants accessed an internet-based survey, which consisted of demographics, deployment information, and contact during deployment, and the Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (RDAS). Dyadic adjustment of regular army and reservist partners revealed a minor difference of relational cohesion based on partner's military affiliation. Differences in reported martial satisfaction were also found to be influenced by age and the interaction of age and partner's military affiliation. Partners of regular army soldiers also indicated having a greater number of resources available for support during deployment and utilizing a greater number of methods to maintain contact during deployment. Qualitative analysis of participants' descriptions of challenges and recommendations suggested parenting and childcare to be the most common challenge among regular and reservist components. Partners of regular army soldiers also appeared to frequently specify the need for social supports to be military affiliated. Limitations and contributions of findings are also discussed.

Abstract:
The Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 (Public Law 78-346), generally referred to as the GI Bill, provided any veteran, who had served for at least 90 days from the time period of September 1940 to July 1947, paid full-time education. The original Act also called for the creation of a central agency dedicated to the administration of all veterans' benefits, which ultimately became the Veterans' Administration (VA). The GI Bill has been revamped five more times since its initial inception, with the most recent iteration, the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008, being hailed to be potentially as powerful a social policy groundbreaking as the original GI Bill.;The purpose of this research was to conduct a study and evaluate the data regarding the use of the benefits of the Post-9/11 GI Bill by veterans and active duty military college students. The overarching research question was: What are the Tidewater Community College (TCC) veteran and current active-duty military member/reservist perceptions of the Post-9/11 GI Bill and does their usage of benefits align with the federal policy goals of recruitment, retention, and rewarding our military members for their service?;An analysis of the results of the online survey showed that of the three federal policy goals, retention of quality personnel and the feeling of reward for military service were being met through the perception of TCC student veterans. While the Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits were not a primary recruitment reason for the majority of respondents, most felt that the Act would aid in future military recruitment. This research also found that Post-9/11 GI Bill users were using their benefits primarily for degree attainment and increased job opportunities. Military students appeared to be positively using educational swirl in order to alleviate the 36-month time limits and to continue receiving their living stipend. Specifically, they were attending more than one institution concurrently and/or in series because they were driven to complete their degree as efficiently as possible.;Dissatisfaction exists, mainly with the implementation of the policy, time limitations on usage, and changes to the living stipend payments. This dissatisfaction may be the main reasons those eligible are not using the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Other reasons for current non-use that should be explored further include the possibilities that students are waiting to use their Post-9/11 benefits after other federal monies have been used, and they may have already depleted their GI Bill benefits. Modifications to alleviate students' perceived issues could ultimately increase the attainment of the Post-9/11 federal policy goals of recruitment, retention, and rewarding military members for their service.

Abstract:
An integrated stratigraphic analysis of a ~350 ft drill core from Upton County (Texas) has revealed pervasive variability of several key siliciclastic and carbonate lithofacies in vertical section, where organic-rich siliceous mudrock beds alternate with aluminum-rich mudrocks and calcareous gravity flow deposits. Sediment chemistry, especially major and trace elements derived from x-ray fluorescence, captures this variability with high sensitivity. The high frequency chemostratigraphic variability appears to be cyclic, and it is interpreted to represent the first example of deep-water Late Pennsylvanian cyclothems for the Midland Basin. Positive trace metal (Mo, Cr) correlations to total organic carbon and gamma ray response in siliceous mudrocks, in conjunction with abundant pyrite, indicate bottom-water anoxia and possibly euxinia within the basin. The influence of glacial ice-sheets on the water level of the global ocean, in concert with local oceanographic gradients, regional tectonics, and tropical paleoclimate, constitute the primary controls on lithofacies and chemostratigraphy. The results of this study have implications for understanding the depositional history of the Midland Basin, as well as for identifying horizontal drilling zones for resource development.

Orme, Geoffrey John. "The post deployment reintegration of Australian army reservists." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/92809.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the present research was to delineate the effects of deployment on Australian Army reservists serving on low-threat overseas stability operations. Even without exposure to traumatic events, reservists face challenges that differ from regular soldiers who prepare, deploy, and return within the constant context of their unit and wider army. More like civilian workers who deploy overseas to assist in disaster and post-conflict zones, Australian Army reservists are coalesced into temporary formations. They then leave the context of their families and civilian employment for the deployment and then return back to their civilian lives, often abruptly Participants were Army reservists deployed to Timor L'Este for seven months (N=92) in 2002/03, and three consecutive groups (N=350) deployed to the Solomon Islands in 2006/07. The research was broadened to also incorporate the experiences of civilian employers (N=126) and families (N=32) of Army reservists, whose experiences were largely unknown. The major findings across studies were as follows: 1) Reservists from all study groups returned in sound mental health and settled well. Measures taken at the end of deployment, six months after return, and two years post deployment found low rates of referrals for follow-up, low scores on mental health screening instruments (KI0, PCL-C, DASS-42), and a relatively unchanged pattern of alcohol use (AUDIT). 2) The deployment experience was reported as positive by 65-67%, with the number of positive statements (558) exceeding the number of negative statements (438) by a ratio of 1.30:1.00. 3) Readjustment to civilian life appeared uncomplicated and the reservists continued to be actively engaged with the Army. Their retention in a deployable status was more than twice the level seen among reservists as a whole. They promptly returned to service with their provider units after a substantial absence, despite what would have been the attractions and demands to attend to family, study, and civilian employment activities. Between 12%-25% enlisted in the regulars following their overseas service, and around 12% deployed overseas again within two years of returning. 4) As expected with low-threat military operations, traumatic stressors were only infrequently reported. Nevertheless, the few non-traumatic stressors reported by reservists during their tours were inversely associated with their reported deployment experience and what psychological distress could be detected. The primary source of a less-than-positive deployment experience and slightly elevated psychological distress predominately emanated from work-related sources, for example, the behaviour of others, leadership, and double standards. 5) These associations with non-traumatic stressors were moderated by psychological hardiness. Reservists with higher levels of hardiness nearly always reported a positive experience and negligible psychological distress, while reservists with lower levels of hardiness were more likely to report a less-than-positive deployment experience and low, but appreciable levels of psychological distress. 6) Employers and families reported seeing the benefits of deployment to the growth and satisfaction of their reservist. Both groups reported more positives than negatives when a reservist deploys (1.65:1 and 1.50:1 respectively). The implications of the present findings are discussed with respect to their application to reservists, employers and families, as well as other occupational groups such as ad hoc mission-specific organizations working in conflict and disaster zones.

The purpose of this study seeks to understand the level of political participation among the members of Yilan County reservists organization. Based on the analysis of survey data, the findings show that the political socialization of this organization has important effects on these members’ political participation. Much different from the general voters in Yilan inclined to “Pan Green” (DPP), these members of this organization, 83.7% of those born and living in Yilan, are strongly inclined to “Pan Blue” (KMT), and the age and the current position are significant factors associated with their vote choices and political alienation. The major findings of the study are: (1) this organization has influences on these members’ political attitudes and voting behaviors; (2) the level of political participation among these members is statistically strong, and of political alienation is statistically weak; (3) compared with other figures of surveying 2008 presidential election and 2009 magistrate election of Yilan County, it shows that the party identification and voting results of these members are statistically different from of those voters in Yilan. Notably 68.9% of these members voted for Mr. Lu Kuohwa, KMT candidate, who lost 2009 magistrate election of Yilan County.

The "Jingshih Program", formally known as the The ROC Armed Forces Strengthening Program, initiated by the department of defense in 1998 was successful in reducing the amount of active troops in Taiwan army. The successive programs that followed the "Jingshih Program", namely "Jingcui Program" and "Jingjin Program" were also successful in further streamlining the armed forces. The cumulative results of all these programs was a 40% reduction in the number of the active soldiers from 500,000 to 200,000. The remaining 300,000 troops formed the military reserve force. To maintain the physical fitness, combat efficiency of these reserve troops, the Reserve Command will invite them to an annual event where sporting activities. So the goal of this research topic to understand the motivations of the reserve army and the social support of these activities. Abstract:
The South African service (SAPS) has a reputation for being resilient despite the amounts of trauma they are exposed to. Research has shown that this occupation is one of the most stressful. However, research surrounding the SAPS suggests that police work is one of society’s most stressful occupations. The way in which individuals respond to such traumatisations is dependent on numerous factors, two being personality and coping. In so far, this study investigated three main areas around police reservists – a unit within the SAPS - in order to understand their responses to trauma: whether personality factors were related to post-traumatic stress symptomatology (PTSS) in the police reservist population; whether coping moderated the relationship between personality factors and PTSS; whether a personality factors predict coping style. A quantitative analysis was conducted among a sample of 36 reservists in the Gauteng area of South Africa. This study found that the relationship between Neuroticism and PTSS is mediated by coping, specifically Emotion-Focused and Dysfunctional Coping styles. A relationship between Conscientiousness and PTSS showed to be prevalent, however this is not due to the mediation affect of coping. Furthermore, Neuroticism and Extraversion showed to predict coping style. Specifically, Neuroticism showed to affect EFC and DC and Extraversion showed to affect EFC. The descriptive statistics showed that this sample of police reservists is suffering from PTSD. Implications of these findings are discussed and directions for future research are explored.

In order to fit in with the changes of the society, on one hand, the role of the government department has been changed from the controller into the server. On the other hand, the role of the citizens has been changed from the been-controlled into the customers. The government also retrenches its structure from heavy into light, and transforms into government which provide services. Therefore, the administrative satisfaction of government is no longer examine by higher authorities, but gradually tend towards evaluate by the citizens. Martial departments in the country are also rated like this. Promoting the service satisfaction continuously is the way to characterize the image of professional, high-efficiency, good service, and the convenient reputation of administrative organization of military for people. The objective of the research is to find out the relation between the quality of military administrative organ and the customer’s satisfaction about Reservists & his family of Nantou area. Through the result of the study, offering the military administrative organization as reference to raise their serve quality. PZB model and SERVQUAL and case study method served as tool in the study. Appling random sampling, 400 copies of questionnaire were issued, and with 387 copies returned. 370 copies are valid. The result demonstrates that the gap between the public’s expectation and the military administrative organ’s recognition of the Nantou area quality is significantly sharp. The result shows that service quality of military administrative organ consists of two dimensions: “guarantee originality”, and “materialize responses”. In addition, it proves that the quality of conception service is the determinant, and has significant positive correlation with the customer’s satisfaction. It is an important factor that the people weigh satisfaction that it is obvious the consciousness and serve quality. In the part of influencing the service quality of the consciousness, different demography variables affect the quality of service construct. In the part of influencing the satisfaction of service quality in different demography variables, there is no significant difference.

Taiwan is located both in the circum-Pacific seismic zone and sub-tropical regions. The geography location causes Taiwan to suffer from natural disasters, including typhoons, heavy rains, droughts, cold waves, and earthquakes. According to the statistic data, each year in Taiwan, there is average of three to four typhoons attacks. Earthquakes with magnitudes 5 hit Taiwan about 24.4 times a year. After the 921 earthquake, government sorted out series of disaster prevention programs and related arrangements, and then “Disaster Prevention and Protection Act” was issued in July 2000. After Typhoon Morakot occurred, Article 34 in “Disaster Prevention and Protection Act” was revised: “When a major disaster occurs, the armed forces should give assistance actively. Ministry of National Defense should consider the disaster prevention as one of the main tasks of the armed forces.” However, after the following rules : “Elite Project”, “Elite Progress Project”and “Super Elite Project”, the number of the standing army reduces significantly. In case of a major disaster, it is difficult to assign the standing army between the training mission and the disaster relief. Therefore, how to use reservists plays an important role, including assigning positions of the numerous reservists, carrying out the education of disaster prevention, organizing the specialties of the reservists, and enhancing reservists’ ability to assist whenever disasters occur. For the specialist reservists, a new skill is required; for our country, utilizing reservists brings positive affect. Through this study, the author tried to analyze the disaster reliefs which the national armed forces attended since the 921 earthquake. The analysis contains armed forces military strength and weakness, organization of reservists training and review of the Disaster Prevention Act. According to the analysis, the author proposed several relevant plans and improvement recommendations: the management and training of reservists’ specialty, substitute and civil defense personnel disaster prevention plan, the establishment of the professional disaster relief team of reservists, the human resource database of the disaster reliefs and, the combination of the reservists and the people for disaster relief.

The ancient people have said that: “all may be quiet, but it is dangerous to forget war,” and “thrive in calamity and perish in soft living.” The whole nation should carefully think about these two adverbs and apply to our current situation. Republic of China has relied on her own strength to say “no” to enemies. The strength comes from our national defense and the effort of combat readiness. National defense plays a pivotal role in the construction of our country, and the modernization of national defense system is fundamental. Only if the whole nation works in unity, supports promotion of national defense policy, acts in concert with the establishment of national defense, mentally prepared for national defense, and supports our initiatives, then the Republic of China will be free of failure, and will make sure that our country land is secured. How to utilize the advantage of the reservist counseling organization in assisting military defense affairs is essential. All reserve soldiers, whether in peacetime or wartime must develop spirit of conscientiousness and courage to go to war, to achieve the goal of “minimize military force in peaceful time and maximize in the wartime”. This way, the reservist can become a solid backup of the armed forces to maintain the stability of society and become irreplaceable forces of national security to meet the military goals and national expectation. In other words, in situations of revised defense organization law, facing invasion of People’s Republic of China, non-traditional security threats, and changeable international affairs, we must strive to focus on functional organization and volunteer roles to ensure the survival of the country and safeguard people''s lives and property. This will be an essential and fundamental topic in current defense policy to combat wartime readiness and national promotion of the defense system.

Due to the social and conceptual changes, voluntary work in public services is becoming more popular. The number of Taiwanese people who participate in voluntary work is increasing dramatically. The reserve military counseling center is to assist the Ministry of National Defense in promoting the national defense affairs of the whole people and the services of the reserve military personnel. Since the characteristics of the various organs under the Ministry of National Defense are different from those of the general public and private departments, the motives of the reserve and reserve military guidance organizations are indeed worth studying. On the other hand, because the reserve military counseling cadres are performing public services, the ability of volunteers, traits and external services not only affects the overall image of the Ministry of National Defense, but also affects the quality of government administration services. Volunteers emphasize team service, so volunteers If we can provide organizational citizenship behavior to the volunteer team, we can also provide enthusiasm for the client. This study aims to understand the relationship between motivation and organizational citizenship behavior in the capacity and traits of reserve military counsellors. This study used Kaohsiung City Reserve Military Counselors as the research object, and issued 456 questionnaires. Among them, 317 valid questionnaires, chanting, validity, factor analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and the use of class regression to verify the research hypothesis under the control of demographic variables, the results of the study show: First, the reserve military counseling cadres agree that their motivations are the highest in social responsibility, the second is to enrich the life and learning motivation, and the lowest is the institutional trait motivation. Second, the relationship between the shackles and motives of the reserve military counseling cadres for organizational citizenship behavior is not interfered by ability, but only by the intermediary of the ability. Third, the relationship between the shackles and motivations of the reserve military counseling cadres to the organizational citizenship behavior is partly interfered by the traits of different degrees, and is also affected by the partial mediation of different traits. Research findings, research recommendations, and research limitations are also based on research findings. Factories usually use cooling tower to be the cooling equipment for air system or production cooling system. This study is to explore the way to lower energy consumption since the energy cost is increasing by using cooling tower. This study is designed to use circulating water tower in top floor reservoir replace traditional cooling tower. Separated into experimental group and control group, analyze the feasibility of using sustained water use on top floor reservoir instead of traditional cooling tower to compare each energy saving result. The study focuses on using sustained water use on top floor reservoir and the property of tap water normal temperature instead of traditional way by using cooling tower to do the research. The temperature will get increasing by heat exchange on traditional cooling tower, relatively the increasing temperature will lower chiller performance and cause power consumption. Explore the temperature into the water and volume of usage from top floor reservoir, compare performance of chiller with traditional cooling towers, and do the comparison on the power use by two circulating cooling modes. Experimental group costs about NTD 3 millions and control group costs about NTD 3.7 million, the difference is about NTD782 thousand. According to the cost variance, it shows that using water reservoir to be cooling system can totally replace traditional cooling tower, and also provide energy saving and cost saving.

The approach of this project is to study the mixture of coalfly ash sediments and ShihMen reservoir sludge and to treat it as a raw material of construction materials. The fly ash fromthe coal combustion plant is added into reservoir sludge as thewater absorbent of sludge. The mixture is tested by strength, density, water content and plastic index in the extrusion, drying and sintering operations to find the formula for manufacturing of construction brick. The important tested results were obtained as following:(1) The green strength of the mixture under the fly ash content lower than 50% was suitable for brickmaking. However, the water content in the mixture have to control within the liquid limit and the plastic limit of the mixture. (2) The sintering conditions of the mixture is suggested in the range of 900℃ to 1000℃ with the duration of 10 hours. In the sintering temperature range, the higher sintering temperature will get the products of greater brick strength.(3) The bulk density of sintering product was governed by fly ash content. The porosity of bricks increased with increasing fly ash content. The cost of this process was evaluated under the production rate of 2 million pieces per month in the traditional brickmaking plant. If the plant produces the bricks with adding 30% of flyash into the sludge, that will consume 4770 tons of sludge per month, and the cost will be increased about 15% comparing with the traditional brickmaking plant.
