Full textThe protection of the forests of Anticosti Island in the context of the inscription of the island to the UNESCO World Heritage List relaunches the debate on the legitimacy of forest management within certain types of protected areas. Using a qualitative methodology, it was possible to establish that the creation of a protected area with sustainable on the territory of the outfitters on the western part of Anticosti Island is perceived as a relevant and socially acceptable project by the co-construction network formed during this research project. Thru this study, ecological restoration forestry and hunting management are seen as compatible with the socioecological system of outfitters on Anticosti Island in the context of the creation of a protected area with sustainable use. The development of a new conservation formula is also seen as an opportunity to develop an inclusive governance structure for local organizations as well a way to revise certain forest practices proposedby the present general integrated forest management plan of the island of Anticosti, such as unfenced cut blocks, perceived as a threat to this socio-ecological system.Despite certain opposing views concerning the future status of protected area with sustainable use, proposed inthe Quebec government’s Bill 46, An Act to amend the Natural Heritage Conservation Act and other provisions, the protected area network on Anticosti island presented to the UNESCO World Heritage Center crystallizes the need for a new form of protected area in Quebec. We believe that the design principles of the network of protected areas on Anticosti Island have the potential to serve as a reference to modernize the network of protected areas in Quebec and establish the conservation traditions of the future.

Full textThis thesis proposes to question hunters, anglers, gatherers and wildlife watchers as part of the network which preserve the natural spaces around the river Seine estuary. The conceptual framework is based on North American sociology of leisure. These activities are considered according to the Serious Leisure Perspective. Through a methodology that combines ethnography, interviews and survey, these activities are described as support for volunteering. The analysis links the practice of predation with ecological convictions. Leisure is also used as a communication medium and help creating a consistent network to preserve nature

Full textHunting is one of the dominant subjects of Etruscan iconography as soon as the first figurative representations emerged. It fitted perfectly in the scenery of weapons and the jewellery of the first protohistoric elites. Furthermore, hunting was quickly enhanced by new methods coming from Middle Eastern and Hellenic cultures, in which the bestiary and the staging patterns are both included. This predominance in hunting scenes tempts to make us wonder about their symbolic use, on the furniture or on the private and public monuments ordered by Etruscan aristocrats. It also arouses our interest about the place of hunting in an “ideology of power” of which we only have figurative testimonies. Thus, the long period studied –from the VIIIth to the IVth century B.C.- will allow us to understand the various mutations of this topic, as well as the social and political changes through the different city-states. More broadly, an imagery about the relationship between humans and animals- including animal hunts, farming scenes and even the taming wild animals- will be taken into account to try to understand the relevance of the topic of mastery of wild animals in Etruria. Indeed, the singularity of the Etruscan culture seems to be expressed through the various and numerous representations usually seen on furniture as well as funerary monuments. Hunting, be it with a realistic, heroic, mythic or funerary dimension is thus the object of an important staging for ideological or ritual purposes. The consideration of the Etruscan corpus against other collections- taken from the Greek civilisation but also from other cultures such as Italic, Latin or Lucanian- encourages us to reconsider the question of the symbolic of hunting in the imaginary of this pre-Roman Italy, before the Roman hunt performances had developed

Full textThis work aims to examine hunting practices, particularly in France and especially in Picardy, as forms of expression of the relationship with territorial identity. Beyond this it is the status of local geographical identity which is set up as a point of rivalry for those populations which are, more than others, excluded from the “benefits” of globalisation. After these first sometimes rather microsociological and ethnographic viewpoints, the third approach will aim to widen the angle in order to describe, strategically speaking, the hunters of the Somme : that is to say 5,240 people who replied to us out of approximately 28,000 practisers of the sport. This quantitive base will make it possible to measure the concreteness of the relations with the local territories. In a word, if at the end of thie work, the formula “Man is a place for man” appears excessive to us, we must nevertheless admit the significance of the links to over-localised territoriality, as an almost logical complement of globalisation. The greater part of the practisers of hunting seem to be searching for a lost period of time. It is in this sense that the study of hunting activities interests the social sciences in order to understand the transformation of French society, via relations maintained with nature. Because hunting constitutes a form of total social fact (Marcel Mauss), its understanding takes on a pioneering capacity

Full textThis research deals with hunting in Aquitaine. The text falls into three parts. The first describes the group, his culture and his problems. It shows the importance of cultural identity in collective behaviour. This first part is based on " sociologie de l'expérience ". The second part, through the sociology of mobilization, is about the movement " chasse pêche nature traditions " and his mobilizations. This movements reveals the breakdown between grassroot people and elected representatives in France. The third part defines the nature of hunter's movement. Alternative between lobby and populism, " chasse pêche nature traditions " is an " anti - new social movement". Epiphenomenon, this movement shows society's failure and reveals three stakes : - identity stake for an endangered minority in changing society, - political stake with the growing place of european community facing national representation and with democracy breakdown, - ideological stake for the place of man and environment
