Abstract:
The topic of this master thesis are information systems in turism. The author focuses mostly on reservations systems as an essential information systems for travel agencies. This thesis examines such systems in the context of the Internet and the model of software as a service. The Internet has become a necessary for operating these systems and it has influenced the field as a whole. The thesis has three main chapters. The first chapter is a theoretical one, where the author investigates the mechanics of information systems in turism. He attempts to formalize information systems in general and he seeks their role in organizations. Additionally, he explains how these systems work and what functionallity can be expected from them. In the second chapter, which moves between theory and practice, the author analyzes the current market situation of these systems. Next, he defines requirements on a system tailored for one specific bussiness plan. Using these requirements multi-criteria decision analysis is performed, selecting the system which best matches the chosen criteria. The last chapter is a practical one and it is concern with deploying selected system from the previous chapter and all aspects of this process. The goal of this thesis is to realize information system part of the Internet-based travel agency project and at the same time search for theoretical conclusions about these systems. The conclusions are then compiled into methodological manual for ASW application in the Internet-based travel agencies segment.

Baitalmal, Ammar. "Mobile Application Based Parking Reservation System." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32575.

Full text
Abstract:
Finding a suitable parking space in busy cities is a time consuming and challenging task. During the searching process, drivers become frustrated and distracted. Motor vehicle drivers might not initially find a free spot, and will leave the area by making a loop to find another spot close to their destination. As a result, there is increased congestion on the road, sometimes causing accidents, and wasting valuable time. To address this problem, we believe that a parking reservation system is necessary and will help reduce the high volume of congestion that might otherwise lead to accidents and have many other environmental and health impacts. The objective of our research is to propose a mobile-based reservation system. The process of finding a free parking space shall be made easy and fast; customers will only be a few taps away from guaranteed and paid parking, based on their preferences. The model presented considers all nearby parking service providers’ ability to satisfy customers’ requirements and will reserve the best parking for the user.

Feldman, Jacob. "Optimizing Restaurant Reservation Scheduling." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2010. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/hmc_theses/22.

Full text
Abstract:
We consider a yield-management approach to determine whether a restaurant should accept or reject a pending reservation request. This approach was examined by Bossert (2009), where the decision for each request is evaluated by an approximate dynamic program (ADP) that bases its decision on a realization of future demand. This model only considers assigning requests to their desired time slot. We expand Bossert's ADP model to incorporate an element of flexibility that allows requests to be assigned to a time slot that differs from the customer's initially requested time. To estimate the future seat utilization given a particular decision, a new heuristic is presented which evaluates time-slot/table assignments based on the expected number of unused seats likely to result from a given assignment. When compared against naive seating models, the proposed model produced average gains in seat utilization of 25%.

Zhao, Yueqin. "A Downtown Space Reservation System: Its Design and Evaluation." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29021.

Full text
Abstract:
This research explores the feasibility of providing innovative and effective solutions for traffic congestion. The design of reservation systems is being considered as an alternative and/or complementary travel demand management (TDM) strategy. A reservation indicates that a user will follow a booking procedure defined by the reservation system before traveling so as to obtain the right to access a facility or resource. In this research, the reservation system is introduced for a cordon-based downtown road network, hereafter called the Downtown Space Reservation System (DSRS). The research is executed in three steps. In the first step, the DSRS is developed using classic optimization techniques in conjunction with an artificial intelligence technology. The development of this system is the foundation of the entire research, and the second and third steps build upon it. In the second step, traffic simulation models are executed so as to assess the impact of the DSRS on a hypothetical transportation road network. A simulation model provides various transportation measures and helps the decision maker analyze the system from a transportation perspective. In this step, multiple simulation runs (demand scenarios) are conducted and performance insights are generated. However, additional performance measurement and system design issues need to be addressed beyond the simulation paradigm. First, it is not the absolute representation of performance that matters, but the concept of relative performance that is important. Moreover, a simulation does not directly demonstrate how key performance measures interact with each other, which is critical when trying to understand a system structure. To address these issues, in the third step, a comprehensive performance measurement framework has been applied. An analytical technique for measuring the relative efficiency of organizational units, or in this case, demand scenarios called network Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), is used. The network model combines the perspectives of the transportation service provider, the user and the community, who are the major stakeholders in the transportation system. This framework enables the decision maker to gain an in-depth appreciation of the system design and performance measurement issues.

Sherry, John William. "Systems of arrogance: Technology and the work of Navajo resistance." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/187442.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation adopts the perspective of Cognitive Ethnography to examine the work of a grassroots, Navajo environmental organization called Diné Citizens Against Ruining our Environment. Specifically, I will examine the work and the challenges facing the members of this organization in order to evaluate how new communications and information technologies may be of use to them. This analysis begins, as Cognitive Ethnography mandates, with a general description of the tasks which constitute the work of Diné CARE. As will be discussed, these consist primarily in attempts to reassert what the organization's members consider to be traditional Navajo perspectives on economic development and the human relationship with the natural environment. Subsequently, I analyze the representations, measurements of work, and forms of organization required to accomplish Diné CARE's tasks. In all aspects of the work, members were constantly required to manage a dialogue between their preferred means of organizing or representing work, and the means required by the operating environment in which they found themselves, characterized primarily by relationships with various outside sources of legal, technical or financial support. The work of Diné CARE is thus extensively "dialogic." While members continually drew on Navajo traditions for viewing the relationship of human beings to the natural environment, for representing their work, and for building cooperative access to resources for resistance, they were nonetheless required at the same time to position these "traditional" approaches against approaches whose history of development have political, social and cultural roots in Western Europe and modem America. Often, this dialogue brought with it tension and even morally charged conflict for the members of Diné CARE. This tension extended to emerging technologies as well. In spite of many claims to the contrary, new communications and information technologies did little to alleviate the mismatch between "local" and "foreign" ways of doing work. Instead of "empowering" local communities by providing them access to information or the chance to be heard on their own terms, new technologies complicated the scenario of local resistance by requiring practices for representing work which were both difficult to master and often inappropriate.

Anderson, Paul Joseph. "Antitrust and regulatory aspects of airline computer reservation systems." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Accounting and Information Systems, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/2737.

Full text
Abstract:
The influence of laissez-faire ideology on economic policy in recent years has been profound. Proponents of this form of economic liberalisation rely heavily on antitrust, also known as competition law, to fill the void left by dismantled regulatory regimes. In most situations, antitrust law provides a mechanism which ensures that markets operate on a competitive basis and thus maximise the welfare of society. However, in some industries, antitrust law is not sufficient to promote and foster workable competition. This is of particular concern where the uncompetitive industry has the potential to adversely affect a neighbouring or related industry. This research analyses the computer reservation system industry in Europe, North America and Australasia. It looks closely at the competitive difficulties of the CRS industry and explains how these difficulties affect two related industries-air transportation and travel agencies. A number of conclusions and policy recommendations emerge. The triangular relationship of inter-dependence between the CRS, air transportation and travel agency industries makes CRS vendors unusually resistant to conventional regulation. Neither antitrust law nor direct industry regulation are completely effective at preventing airlines which own CRSs from exploiting their competitive advantage in one industry in ways which anti-competitively affect trade in other industries. The research concludes that for the Australian and New Zealand markets, a blend of competition law and light-handed regulation is appropriate. For the United States market, increased antitrust enforcement by the correct agencies combined with active regulatory threats is required to create a fair air transportation market. The thesis recommends a consistent world-wide code of conduct to promote global airline competition. Such a code could then be adopted by individual states and complemented by their competition law legislation.

Mounzer, Ralph. "New tone reservation PAPR reduction techniques for multicarrier systems." Thesis, Rennes, INSA, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015ISAR0029/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted by many telecommunication and broadcasting systems for its robustness, high transmission rates, mobility and bandwidth efficiency. However, OFDM signals are characterized by high power fluctuations, measured by the Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR), which cause distortions at the output of the non-linear High Power Amplifier (HPA) and prevent the radio frequency designer to feed the signal at the optimal point of the HPA specifications in order to reduce the energy consumption. The second generation of Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-T2) adopted two PAPR reduction techniques, one of them is Tone Reservation (TR). TR creates a Kernel from a reserved set of subcarriers. The kernel is then iteratively added to the OFDM signal in such a way to reduce its peaks thus reducing its PAPR. In the first part of the thesis, different algorithms offering better performances compared to the DVB-T2 TR solution are proposed. A first group of solutions introduces changes and enhancements to the TR algorithm adopted in DVB-T2 TR but keeps the same kernel definition. This group includes: the Partial Oversampling and Fractional Shifted Kernels (POFSK) technique which is based on a partial oversampling of the signal, the Dynamic Threshold (DT) technique which allows better algorithm convergence by dynamically computing the PAPR reduction threshold for every OFDM symbol, and the Enhanced Peak Selection (EPS) technique which provides additional PAPR reduction by choosing the appropriate signal peaks to reduce and the peaks to skip. The second group of solutions includes the Individual Carrier Multiple Peaks (ICMP) technique which is based on a special kernel definition that changes from one algorithm iteration to another and uses a different phase calculation approach that allows the reduction of multiple peaks at a time. GICMP is an optimized version of ICMP that allows the parallelization of iterations in such a way to reduce the processing delay and the number of algorithm iterations. The simulation results and real hardware platform measurements of the proposed algorithms showed that, compared to the DVB-T2 TR version, the GICMP algorithm allows a Modulation Error Rate – MER gain of up to 2.5 dB or a 10 % reduction in HPA consumed energy with the same performances

Farrell, Cynthia S. "Chronic Pain Management in a Reservation Border Town." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195767.

Abstract:
Pain is a growing national public health problem that contributes to spiraling health care costs and significant societal burden in the United States. It is the most common reason for seeking health care services, and is the leading cause of disability (CDC, 2008). Inadequately treated pain has profound social, psychological, economic, and physiological consequences for patients, their families, and society (American Pain Society, 2009).A community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach was used for this project to develop a knowledge base about issues associated with chronic pain and its treatment among Native American people in Winslow, AZ. Mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) were used to gain insight into the local factors that contribute to the self-management and treatment of chronic pain. The results of a provider survey indicated that there are negative psychological traits toward patients with chronic pain such as authoritarianism, intolerance of ambiguity, reliance on technology, and locus of control which are factors that are known to negatively influence pain care (Weinstein et al, 2000). Lack of knowledge regarding pain and pain management along with perceptions and fears related to drug regulatory agencies were additional factors that were found, constituting additional barriers. Patient participants were generally dissatisfied with the pain care practices at Winslow Indian Health. Patient reported treatment goals that included relief of pain, improved quality of life, the ability to return to work, the ability to perform household chores, and the ability to participate in more physical leisure activities. This results of this practice inquiry indicate there is a disconnect between patient and provider views and expectations around pain treatment and the need for further studies to determine the best ways to address chronic pain at the local level. The development of a pain management program is recommended to address the unmet needs of patients with chronic pain. Education in pain management is recommended for healthcare providers, including information regarding the benefits of non-pharmacologic therapies for pain management. The practice inquiry also supports the need for new policies at the local, tribal, and national levels to address pain as a growing public health issue.

McGill, Jeffrey I. "Optimization and estimation problems in airline yield management." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30652.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses problems of optimization and estimation encountered in the process of airline yield management, also called airline seat inventory control. Optimality conditions are given for the problem of setting booking limits for multiple, stochastically independent demand classes that are booked in a nested fashion into a fixed pool of airline seats. These optimality conditions are compared with the approximations given by the EMSR method. Additional conditions are given for two stochastically dependent fare classes, and extensions are made that allow for incorporation of passenger goodwill and upgrades of passengers between fare classes. The model developed for the dependent demand case is also applied to the problem of determining an optimal overbooking limit in a single fare class. Finally, a methodology is developed for using multivariate multiple regression in conjunction with the EM method to estimate the parameters of demand distributions on the basis of historical demand data that have been censored by the presence of booking limits.

Orgerie, Anne-Cécile. "An Energy-Efficient Reservation Framework for Large-Scale Distributed Systems." Phd thesis, Ecole normale supérieure de lyon - ENS LYON, 2011. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00672130.

Abstract:
Over the past few years, the energy consumption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has become a major issue. Nowadays, ICT accounts for 2% of the global CO2 emissions, an amount similar to that produced by the aviation industry. Large-scale distributed systems (e.g. Grids, Clouds and high-performance networks) are often heavy electricity consumers because -- for high-availability requirements -- their resources are always powered on even when they are not in use. Reservation-based systems guarantee quality of service, allow for respect of user constraints and enable fine-grained resource management. For these reasons, we propose an energy-efficient reservation framework to reduce the electric consumption of distributed systems and dedicated networks. The framework, called ERIDIS, is adapted to three different systems: data centers and grids, cloud environments and dedicated wired networks. By validating each derived infrastructure, we show that significant amounts of energy can be saved using ERIDIS in current and future large-scale distributed systems.

Soo, Yin Shiang Valenrina. "Fair adjustment strategies for airline revenue management and reservation systems." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/39283.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references.
With the growth of Low Cost Carriers (LCC) and their use of simplified fare structures, the airline industry has seen an increased removal of many fare restrictions, especially in markets with intense LCC presence. This resulted in "semi-restricted" fare structure where there are homogenous fare classes that are undifferentiated except by price and also distinct fare classes which are still differentiated by booking restrictions and advance purchase requirements. In this new fare environment, the use of traditional Revenue Management (RM) systems, which were developed based on the assumption of independence of demand of fare classes, tend to lead to a spiral down effect. Airlines now have to deal with customers who systematically buy the lowest fare available in the absence of distinctions between the fare classes. This result in fewer bookings observed in the higher fare classes, leading to lower forecast and less protection of seats for the higher yield passengers. This thesis describes Fare Adjustment, a technique developed for network RM systems, which acts at the booking limit optimizer level as it takes into account the sell-up potential of passengers (the probability that a passenger is willing to buy a higher-fare ticket if his request is denied).
(cont.) The goal of this thesis is to provide a more comprehensive investigation into the effectiveness of fare adjustment as a tool to improve airline revenues in this new environment by 1) extending the investigation of the effectiveness of fare adjustment with standard forecasting to leg-based RM systems (namely EMSRb and HBP) and also a mixed fare structure where different fare structures are used for different markets, and 2) looking at the alternative use of fare adjustment in the reservation system. Experiments with the Passenger Origin-Destination Simulator demonstrate that RM Fare Adjustment with standard forecasting can improve an airline's network revenue by 0.8% to 1.3% over standard revenue management methods. In particular, RM Fare Adjustment reduces the aggressiveness of path forecasting through the lowering of bid prices as it takes into account the risk of buying-down. Simulations of Fare Adjustment in the Reservation System also showed positive results with revenue improvement of about 0.4% to 0.7%.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Business Information Systems))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016.
The aim of this research project was to determine what the degree of usability is of a sample of online reservation systems of Cape Town hotels. The literature has indicated that the main aim of website usability is to make the engagement process with a website a more efficient and enjoyable experience. Researchers noted that well designed, high-quality websites, with grammatically accurate content, create a trustworthy online presence. User-friendly sites also attract far more traffic. Previous research has also shown that a loss of potential sales is possible due to users being unable to find what they want, if poor website design has been implemented. Loss of potential income through repeat visits is also a possibility, due to a negative user experience. The research instrument that was employed in this research is usability testing. It is a technique used to evaluate product development that incorporates user feedback in an attempt to create instruments and products that meet user needs, and to decrease costs. The research focused on Internet-based hotel reservation systems. Only the usability was measured. Both standard approaches were used in this research project, in a combined quantitative and qualitative research design. In conclusion, the purpose of this research was to determine the degree of usability of specified Cape Town hotel online reservation systems. The outcomes of this study indicated interesting patterns in that reservation systems met user requirements more often than expected. However, the figures of acceptability obtained were still below the generally accepted norms for usability. The amount of time spent to complete a booking also decreased, as users worked on more than one reservation system.

Abstract:
A combination of technical innovations, system cost reductions, and post-1970's tourism industry restructuring has led to the development and diffusion of a variety of sophisticated computer reservation systems, or CRSs. Questions remain as to the extent to which tourism suppliers and destinations have achieved CRS links. In this case study of two urban destinations, Montreal and Toronto, tourism supplier relationships with CRS technology are examined. Drawing on results from the accommodation and attraction sectors of each city, the varying degrees of CRS adoption and impact are illustrated. CRS adoption by firms is shown to be constrained by a variety of management market, and tourism product-oriented barriers. Strategies employed by tourism suppliers to counter and overcome these barriers are identified. Following a review of tourism and information technology policies within Canada, some regulatory initiatives that may assist in facilitating successful technology adoption and use among the various components of the urban tourism product are proposed. The constantly evolving 'technological' channels and networks of tourism marketing and distribution are shown to be important influences on tourism destination policy. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Pringle, Stuart M. "International reservations systems : their strategic and operational implications for the UK hotel industry." Thesis, Edinburgh Napier University, 1995. http://researchrepository.napier.ac.uk/Output/2785.

Full text
Abstract:
Nature and scope of work: This work presents details of the method and results of an investigation of the role and influence of international reservations systems within the UK hotel industry. The research comprised three questionnaire surveys of the use of computer reservations systems and distribution services by UK hotels. These are analysed and to produce an indication of general use of systems and the contribution which these currently make to hotel groups and consortia. The work also included a study of developments in access methods and changes in buyer behaviour as observed by representatives of computer reservation and distribution system, travel agency, hotel representation and intermediary companies. The impact of information technology developments on the travel agency industry, distribution systems operators and intermediaries is considered. The work then indicates the potential implications of these developments for the strategic planning and operational management of hotels in light of prevailing attitudes to technology, preferred sales methods and buyer behaviour. A computer based information and selection facility is developed. This provides a means of identifying the functions required of a distribution system in order to achieve specific business aims. It identifies the channels which meet the requirements while also providing details of the implications associated with use of each. Contribution to knowledge: This research provides the first published account of the current and potential influence of information technology on the way in which the UK hotel sector deals with its market and on the structure of the industry itself. The work results from a comprehensive study of the role of a significant emerging technology within an important sector of the tourism, travel and leisure industry. It is seen as being complete in its own right but also forms a starting point for longitudinal research since no previous work of this nature or scale has been undertaken in the area of interest. The guide developed as part of this work also lends itself to extensive future development as both the technology with which it is concerned and the technology upon which it is based continue to mature. The results of primary research indicate that there is scope for potential change in hotel sector sales and marketing practices as new methods of conducting business are adopted by hospitality industry service providers, agencies and the buying public. The work also suggests that global distribution systems are not the most suitable channel for all hotels but that alternatives must be considered in the context of the particular requirements of each hotel business. The use of formal research methods provides those involved in this sector with an objective assessment of the implications of widespread adoption of computer based reservation and distribution systems for individual businesses and for the industry as a whole. This addresses a requirement which was identified by the author and contributors in the course of the research. The subject area is complicated by the number of available channels through which businesses may distribute and receive information. This complexity is acknowledged throughout the work generates a distribution channel evaluation guide based on the research findings. The purpose of this device is to direct readers through the process of selecting the most appropriate channel to meet their specific business aims. The guide is based on results from the various stages of primary research which indicated the aspects of distribution system use about which hoteliers were unclear and also provided material about possible strategic uses and the operational implications experienced by users. This information was used to develop a staged method of identifying the type of system which would meet specific requirements and to indicate the implications associated with the use of a particular type of distribution system. This decision process is described and is then presented in the form of a hypertext document. The current version provides an elementary guide which can be used to assist qualitative evaluation in a complex subject area and indicates how this technology can be applied in its most basic form. Planned future work aims to develop the scope and function of the static reference document to produce a means of access to product provider information and to create a forum through which users can communicate with each other through e-mail. System suppliers can provide links to their own product information pages which can be accessed by users seeking information and advice. These developments will result in a guide which is interactive and can be kept up to date by system suppliers. This extension of the guide's role should enable it to provide material to be used in the decision support process by users wishing to conduct quantitative evaluation or comparison of distribution systems. This stage of development would require the use of a facility such as the World Wide Web (WWVV) to enable users and suppliers to communicate with each other. The WWW offers ready support for hypertext, the use of which is considered to be important for this application because of its ease of use for inexperienced computer users, the wide availability of the WWW and the suitability of an on-line system as means of publishing material which is subject to continual change. However, it is considered likely that a static version of the guide could be made available for users who do wish to avoid the cost and complication of obtaining access to the WWW. Although the use of hypertext is becoming more common, it is believed that this is the first use of this technology as a means of publishing research in this field.

Abstract:
In this thesis, a framework for Quality of Service provisioning in next generation wireless access networks is proposed. The framework aims at providing a differentiated service treatment to real-time (delay-sensitive) and non-real-time (delay-tolerant) multimedia traffic flows at the link layer. Novel techniques such as bandwidth compaction, channel reservation, and channel degradation are proposed. Using these techniques, we develop a call admission control algorithm and a call control block as part of the QoS framework. The performance of the framework is captured through analytical modeling and simulation experiments. By analytical modeling, the average carried traffic and the worst case buffer requirements for real-time and non-real-time calls are estimated. Simulation results show a 21% improvement in call admission probability of real-time calls, and a 17% improvement for non-real-time calls, when bandwidth compaction is employed. The channel reservation technique shows a 12% improvement in call admission probability in comparison with another proposed scheme in the literature.

Abstract:
The concept of lane reservation has been introduced as a traffic management strategy and has many applications in real life. Previous studies in the literature mainly focus on the impact of lane reservation in a local region of transportation network. In this thesis optimal lane reservation problems are studied with the objective to minimize impact on total traffic by optimally setting reserved lanes in a transportation network. We firstly focus on the lane reservation problem (LRP) for automated truck freight transportation with static link travel time. This primary work has been extended to the capacitated lane reservation problem (CLRP) for large-scale special events. Finally, lane reservation problem with time-dependent travel time (TTLRP), and lane reservation problem with time-dependent travel speed (TSLRP) are studied. For each of the considered problems, appropriate mathematical models are formulated, their complexities are demonstrated. Different resolution methods are explored including exact cut-and-solve method, cut-and-solve and cutting plane combined method, and Tabu-search method. The performance of the proposed algorithms is evaluated by randomly generated instances. Numerical results have shown that the proposed algorithms are more effective to solve the considered problems than the reference commercial package CPLEX

Abstract:
The ticket distribution industry is changing rapidly. The traditional travel distribution chain comprised airlines, travel agents, and computer reservation systems (CRSs). With the current migration of travel distribution to the Internet, the way in which these actors interact has been radically altered.
After deregulation, the airlines' dependence on travel agents and CRSs led to high commission and booking fees respectively. The Internet now offers airlines a means to directly distribute their product to the travelling public with minimal expense. The airlines are eagerly shifting as many of their distribution activities as possible to different forms of web-based distribution, hoping to bypass both travel agents and CRSs. This has allowed them to reduce the commission fees they pay to travel agents. Travel agents too are going online, competing vigorously with the airlines. The combined effect of these (r)evolutions has put the airlines firmly in charge of their own distribution system.
Any such a fundamental change in a sector of industry is bound to raise anticompetitive concerns, especially for those who stand to lose the most. These concerns are at the centre of this thesis. After their examination and evaluation, I conclude that anticompetitive concerns do indeed exist and that the regulatory or antitrust authorities have the unenviable task of preserving competition, not competitors, in a new and rapidly evolving market.

Kasarkod, Jeevak. "A Configurable Job Submission and Scheduling System for the Grid." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34656.

Full text
Abstract:
Grid computing provides the necessary infrastructure to pool together diverse and distributed resources interconnected by networks to provide a unified virtual computing resource view to the user. One of the important responsibilities of the grid software is resource management and techniques to allow the user to make optimal use of the resources for executing applications. In addition to the goals of minimizing job completion time and achieving good throughput there are other minimum requirements such as minimum memory and cpu requirements, choice of operating system, fine grained file access permissions etc. Currently such requirements are being fulfilled by resource brokers, which act as mediating agents between users and resource owners. In this thesis we approach the resource brokering architectural issue in a different manner. Instead of a monolithic broker, which performs all the superscheduling functions we propose a Modular Framework based Architecture for Task Initiation and Scheduling (MFATIC) based on the three main stages in the superscheduling process. There are three major goals of this research. The first aim is to develop a decoupled architectural model that not only provides a clear distinction in the responsibilities of each of the components but also provides the user the flexibility to replace one component with another functionally equivalent component. Secondly each of these components should be configurable and extensible to be able to accommodate user requirements. Finally, the design should enable the user to plug in modules within components of different deployments of the resource broker and thus promoting software reuse.
