Copitch, Belinda Joy. "Roots and routes : identity development of researcher and researched in a Jewish Youth Movement context." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.496034.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the issue of ethnicity and kinship and explores the advent of identity formation, specifically in a Reformn Jewish context, via youth movement participation. Through the mediums of informal education, focus group discussion and individual semi-structured interviews, I engage in an exploration of identifying what it means to be Jewish, how youth movements augment and abet Jewish identity formation, and the boundaries that exist between young Jews and their host communities. Youth movement youngsters are observed in situ and Grounded Theory (Strauss, 1987; Glaser, 1978; Glaser, 1992; Giaser, 1998; Glaser, and Strauss, 1968) is employed to elucidate their engagements and interactions. Three case studies (Stake, 1995) are then presented to illustrate the experience of youth movement "graduates". Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (Smith, 2004; Smith and Osborn, 2003) is used to consider the dimensions of their relationship to Judaism, their youth movement and mainstream society.

Lee, Heesook Ms. "The Relationships Between Research Training Environment, Researcher Identity Formation Process, and Research Activity Among Counseling Doctoral Students." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2017. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2335.

Abstract:
Current literature claims that the graduate students’ personal aspects not only influence research training outcomes, but they also serve as a mediator between students’ research activity and research training environment. In previous studies, key predictors of scholarly/research productivity among counseling graduate students have been investigated (Brown, Lent, Ryan, & McPartland, 1996; Kahn, 2001; Kahn & Scott, 1997). However, only 17% of the variance in three factors—research self-efficacy, research interests, and number of years in a program—predicted student research activities directly and research training environment indirectly. Bandura’s social cognitive theory was utilized as the conceptual framework for the study. Data was collected through SurveyMonkey™, an online source that surveyed 292 counseling doctoral students currently enrolled in 90 counseling doctoral programs across the United States. The findings from a factor analysis conducted in the present study indicated, the RIFPQ-R developed by the researcher was a reliable and valid instrument. Additionally, the findings showed that counseling doctoral students’ researcher identity correlated significantly with students’ research activity and research training environment; however, the correlations were weak. Finally, using two multiple regression analyses, students’ research experiences before admission to program, number of credit hours completed in qualitative and quantitative research, number of years enrolled in their program, and weekly hours spent doing research predicted a small portion of variance in students’ reported researcher identity and research activity.

Abstract:
This a/r/tographic dissertation offers opportunities to interrogate curator identity and curator ways of being in both public and private spaces. Instead of an authoritative or prescriptive look at the curatorial, this dissertation as catalogue allows for uncertainty, for messiness, for vulnerable spaces where readers are invited into an exhibition of disorderly living. Stitched throughout the study are stories of mothering and the difficulties that accompanied the extremely early birth of my daughter. Becoming a mother provoked my curating in unexpected ways and allowed me to reconsider the reasons I collect, display, and perform as a curator. It was through the actual curating of familial material artifacts in the exhibition Dress Stories, I was able to map the journey of my curatorial turns. My engagement with clothing in the inquiry was informed by the work of Sandra Weber and Claudia Mitchell, where dress as a methodology allows for spaces to consider autobiography, identity, and practice. It was not until the exhibition was over, I was able to discover new ways to thread caring, collecting, and cataloging ourselves as curators, artists, researchers, teachers, and mothers. It prompts curators and teachers to consider possibilities for failure, releasing excess, and uncaring as a way to care for self, objects, and others.

Achieng-Evensen, Charlotte. "Young, Urban, Professional, and Kenyan?: Conversations Surrounding Tribal Identity and Nationhood." Chapman University Digital Commons, 2016. http://digitalcommons.chapman.edu/ces_dissertations/9.

Full text
Abstract:
By asking the question “How do young, urban, professional Kenyans make connections between tribal identity, colonialism, and the lived experience of nationhood?,” the researcher engages with eight participants in exploring their relationships with their tribal groups. From this juncture the researcher, through a co-constructed process with participants, interrogates the idea of nationhood by querying their interpretations of the concepts of power and resistance within their multi-ethnic societies. The utility of KuPiga Hadithi as a cultural responsive methodology for data collection along with poetic analysis as part of the qualitative tools of examination allowed the researcher to identify five emergent and iterative themes: (1) colonial wounds, (2) power inequities, (3) tensions, (4) intersection, and (5) hope. Participant discussion of these themes suggests an impenetrable link between tribal identity and nationhood. Schooling, as first a colonial and then national construct, works to mediate that link. Therefore, there is the need for a re-conceptualization of the term ‘nation’ in the post-Independence era.

In order to envision improvements in the quality of education and to systematize the scientific production in the Northeast in Teaching Science and Mathematics, there is the Project Centre of Education (POE), comprising the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), Federal University of Rio Grande North (UFRN) and the State University of Paraiba (UEPB) and their Graduate Program. We are part of this project and hope that the masters of the Post-graduate in Science Teaching (PPGEC) of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE) to get out of this program is in congruence with their conceptions with new trends in teaching the sciences, emphasizing that a reflective practitioner / researcher should be able to analyze and evaluate their own practice, improving their practice in order to train more people to think critically and reflectively. In this sense, this study aims to analyze the social representations of the graduates of the Post-Graduate School of Science, University of Pernambuco Federal Rural Teacher in order to understand the factors that contribute to strengthening the identity of the teacher as researcher's own practice. The theoretical reference is based on Social Representation Theory developed by Serge Moscovici, complemented by the Central Nucleus Theory of Jean-Claude Abric. We brought a discussion on the construction of teacher identity (PEPPER and ANASTASIO, 2005; NÓVOA, 1995; GRANDIN, 2008; MORAES, 2000). We also brought a discussion of Reflective/Researcher Teacher (Schon, 1992; BASTOS and NARDI, 2008; and SOUZA LOPES, 2007; PEPPER and ANASTASIO, 2005). The methodology is based on a plural methodological approach. We used three methodological tools to collect data. The first is a Socio-Cultural Survey, the second is the Summoning Hierarchical Test and the third is the classification of dissertations, built on the CEDOC descriptors. The research led to the identification and analysis of social representations of 11 subjects who entered the program in 2002 PPGEC to those who defended their dissertations in 2009. For data analysis, we seek help of the software Evov2000, document analysis and content and process of categorization of words. The results revealed that the social representation of teachers, even showing traces of an ambiguous conception of meaning, rooted in the words dedication and responsibility, bringing the idea that words are more rooted to the history and culture teaching, indicating that the representation is a more traditional shows, more strongly, that their social representations, mostly, are permeated by a socio-constructive tendency, rooted in the words as Educator and Mediator. The word assessment, although it was a term that appeared as a fringe element, showed that the subjects are beyond the reductionist view of the evaluation process with an emphasis on understanding and awareness, revealing that his views are in congruence with the new trends of Teaching Science.

The aim of this study was to analysis the construction of identity of teacher and reseacher in the teaching of Physics in an educational proposal bulding, developed and studies in abn initial teacher education program since 1997. The research was in a study of case, with collection and analysis of the data was supported by the theoretical epistemological and methodological concepts of Freire, Habermas, Strauss, Latour and Miron. The education of teachers and researchers in the teaching of Physics takes places in a context of different demands and limit situations. It is necessary to develop reflexions, relations and modifcations in the course of action. I check that the experience of praxis - interannouncer between theory and practice - in the development of an educational proposal in Physics teachers initial educational supports the construction of a special identity - a teacher and researcher in the teaching of Physics. The outomes demonstrate that the proposal have had considerable progress in the systematization and educational activities that problematize concepts and practices, which in turn allow for the start and continuation of dialogue; the partnerships that aim to implement and consolidate the relations among teaching, research and outreach activities at the University and Schools

Abstract:
Only men can initiate boys into men. Boys are prepared into men by men of integrity, for that reason, when a father is absent a male model has to be found. Lack of models is the number one enemy for our adolescent males in Zimbabwe today. The absence of adult role models means adolescent males are moulded by unsupervised, doubtful and inexperienced peers. In the past the bringing up of a child was a community responsibility. In the present day children are growing up as sheep without a male shepherd. The qualitative and quantitative research methods guided the process of this study. The study revealed that fathers are absent because they have migrated to other countries and that their absence has a negative impact on developing healthy adolescent males. Migration of fathers to the Diaspora could not be resisted by men because of the socioeconomic and political situation in Zimbabwe. Fathers have left the country for greener pastures. The exodus of fathers to the Diaspora has created a vacuum when it comes to mentoring and moulding of male children into adults. The study carried out with adolescent boys indicated that fathers in the Diaspora are engaged in some form of income generating activities. As a result, some of these men are able to provide material needs intended for their families back home. However, the absence of these fathers has made some children feel emotionally abandoned and betrayed, while others are disappointed by fathers who did not bid them farewell at the time they were living the country. There is another group that felt that the absence benefited them. The absence of fathers destroyed father – son relationships, generated anger, bitterness and lack of any future trust with fathers. When children are angered and bitterness resides in them, they would go against their father’s potential assistance. On the other hand, in the process of the study on the absent father, a Christian model of caring for an individual and community emerged. The church has been noted to be the only institution that would guide the society to value the job of caring for the people of God who are in needy situations. When the church cares for the adolescents it will be caring for itself as well as the body of Christ. The author considered the views from James fowler (1981) and Gerkin (1997) on the stages of faith development and the idea of seeing the church as a community of faith in order for this research to portray the community of faith as a Community of Love. This is because it is only by Christ’s love that people are forgiven by God through grace. In addition, it is through love that people are nurtured; miracles of spiritual and numerical growth are realised. Acts 2; bears witness of the power in love fellowships or communities. He states that in sharing the gospel of Christ in love fellowships each member becomes a part of Christ’s body that spreads the gospel. The love fellowships make the church to be more than a preaching or meeting point. It becomes a family where all members have the opportunity to share their experiences at fellowship and individual levels. People will not depend on one person for spiritual growth but on each other for spiritual nourishment. Gerkin was important throughout the research with his pastoral care approach of caring for an individual and the communities of a Christian story in addition to guiding the researcher to create a model for a caring community. Therefore, caring of boys whose fathers are absent requires both individual mentors and local communities to model them. The church has been found wanting by the boys in this study. Boys have indicated that the church was not aware of their pain. This shows that the church was unable to see the depressed and hear the silent voices in order to interpret their situation. This reveals that the church has some parts that need spiritual attention in order for the body of Christ to function optimally. Children will open their hearts in love fellowships in order to be healed, nurtured, sustained and guided through love. Faith will be expressed in a more mature and responsible way when all is done in love. Faith in this study is the act of love that guides individuals and communities to an expression of freedom and responsibility in trusting God’s presence in human situations. It aims at increasing love for one another and to God. For it is only through Christ’s love that healthy memories are created. Chapter one gives the background and context of the problem to the study. It reveals that the motivation to carry out the study emerged from the author’s journey with his father and interactions with young people as a youth pastor. Therefore the socio-economic and political situation in Zimbabwe created an environment for the study to be carried out. In addition, absences of mothers at church prompted him to consider carrying out a study on the: Absent fathers due to migrant work: Its traumatic impact on adolescent males in Zimbabwe. Many women went to collect money from their husbands who are in the Diaspora each month end . Chapters twodemonstrates how a qualitative and quantitative method of carrying of the research is helpful. Listening to stories of the adolescent males enriched the research process. Chapter three dealt with the stages of human development coined by Erik Erikson with the intention to give the reader an understanding regarding the worth of adolescence stage. Chapter four explains father and fatherhood, the role of a father and impact of absence towards the up bringing of adolescent male children. Adolescent males develop their masculinity from their fathers for this reason every child should have a male model in order for him to be a man. In chapter five the researcher engaged in dialogue with adolescent males. Chapter six gave the concluding thoughts and recommendations to the study. The church has been identified as central in guiding children at individual and group levels in this era. The church should be a component of the extended family that is unique but related to the family units without competing with it. Every son needs a biological father from whom he learns how to manage weakness and strengths in his life and act in response to the challenges of the global village. Therefore, a father ought to be a male person in Zimbabwe who fears God and loves his sons not an angel out of this planet. Finally every adolescent child needs Christian males to guide him for it is through Christ’s love that healthy male memories are created.

Crafford, Anne. "Identity in organisations : a methodological study." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/97031.

Abstract:
Thesis (DPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examined organisational identity from a substantive and methodological point of view. With the burgeoning interest in the organisational identity construct, there have been a multitude of perspectives and meanings associated with the term. These perspectives formed the basis of three juxtapositions used to evaluate the nature of knowledge generated by various research designs used to study organisational identity. These designs included survey design, content analysis, case study design, ethnography, narrative analysis and discourse analysis. I concluded that the choice for a particular research design does constrain or make possible the generation of different types of knowledge regarding OI. The effect of design type has long been suspected and argued for, and this study provides further substantiation for this view. The choice of research design is not a neutral one but plays an integral role in the nature of the knowledge generated, and should be taken seriously as part of the research process. Also from a methodological perspective, the aim was to explore whether an Internet-based, open-ended qualitative survey could provide a suitable description of organisational identity, and whether it would be possible to develop identity narratives from these responses. Data was gathered in a South African based multi-national engineering firm, the result of a recent merger of two engineering firms. Based on the responses to the survey, I was able to develop descriptive narratives of each of (what had been termed) the heritage organisations, each narrative comprising a series of inter-related identity statements capturing various facets of organisation identity. Three broad narratives for each heritage organisation dealt with the nature of the organisation and its position in the market, the importance of the profession and clients, and the value of people in the organisation. Given the pervasive nature of technology, and that work in many corporate and professional settings is conducted via the internet, an internet-based qualitative survey allows information regarding organisational identity to be gathered fairly easily. The research undertaken in this study thus adds to the body of knowledge surrounding the use of a web-based qualitative survey in accessing organisational identity, and suggests that this form of data gathering in the organisation can be successful, provided that participants are computer literate and have access to the Internet. The organisations in question were chosen as merger partners due to their similarity, and using the descriptive narratives developed from the survey, I was able to examine the question of distinctiveness in similar organisations, which has not yet been addressed. Despite the similarities, the identity of both organisations was arguably distinct, and this could be traced to two factors. The first was an element of social actor, in this case the size of the organisation, which coupled with other factors influenced organisation identity in very specific ways. Secondly, distinctiveness arose from the construction of meaning around specific elements of the social actor by members of the organisations. Thus, much like personal identity, organisational identity is associated with similarity and difference (Buckingham 2008).

Abstract:
My personal history and the stories of people with similar experiences have inspired my degree project. It revolves around the feeling of belonging when moving from one place to another, adapting to the new environment (e.g. culture, language, etc.), and yet staying in between. It's about the notion of home in the time of migration.  I want to capture the ideas of places and identity transformation through materiality. The tree is very human-like living material. I bend the wood, and, while doing so, it follows my moves and adapts to changed conditions. The tension and force create the shape, and the unfolded pieces become traces of my body movements.  I see the sculptures from the jeweler´s perspective, the performative and interactive pieces invite the viewer to participate.  In my smaller-scale series of work, I continue my materials research narrowing down my investigation from the body to my hands. The pandemic situation increases my awareness of touching and longing for real contact with people. I select a group of found and given to me objects which evoke memories of people and places I have been. By wrapping them into a metallic textile I create imprinted empty space. It becomes a container which questions what is left behind when someone is gone or something is taken away.  I place the handprints and the tree rings in parallel. Both are strong identification symbols. The wood rings mark the conditions in which. the tree grows, forming a unique sign language that visually explains the whole history of the tree.  Do people´s fingerprints change when they move from one place to another?

Serchuk, Adam. "Connectionism, disciplinary identity and continuity." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53246.

Full text
Abstract:
Connectionism, a new technique for modeling cognitive processes, has been presented by its supporters as a revolutionary advance that will soon replace conventional artificial intelligence (AI) research based on the serial computer. In this thesis, I identify three 'gambits' with which critics attempt to undermine connectionist claims, and show that use of these gambits depends on the status of the respondent's own discipline. I argue that in cases where the respondent's discipline has an accepted identity, for example biology and psychology, they take contradictory stances on the issue of continuity between their discipline and connectionism. By contrast, responses from supporters of AI, which has an uncertain status, insist on a continuous relationship between connectionism and AI. To account for this, I suggest that claims made by both supporters and critics of connectionism, which those actors would regard as purely cognitive, are tacitly structured by Kuhn's model of scientific change. As certain claims which the actors would describe as purely cognitive can be accounted for by the presence in common scholarly parlance of a particular philosophical model of scientific change, I conclude that in the confrontation between connectionism and conventional AI there exists a complex relationship between social and cognitive processes.

Cox, Rochelle Evelyn Psychology Faculty of Science UNSW. "Autobiographical memory during hypnotic identity delusions." Awarded by:University of New South Wales. School of Psychology, 2007. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/28047.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to examine the impact of an identity delusion on autobiographical memory and develop a model of deluded autobiographical memory to guide future research in this area. Given the difficulty of studying identity delusions in isolation from other clinical disorders, this thesis presents six experiments that used hypnosis as a laboratory model of identity delusions. Chapter 1 reviews literature from three distinct areas, including delusions, autobiographical memory, and hypnosis. Chapter 1 reviews a model of the self and autobiographical memory proposed by Conway (2005) and outlines the value of using hypnosis instrumentally to model delusions of self. Chapter 2 presents two experiments that established hypnosis as a suitable paradigm for investigating identity delusions. These experiments examined the parameters of the hypnotic delusion and tested the impact of the delusion on self and autobiographical memory. Chapter 3 presents two experiments that continued to examine the characteristics of autobiographical memory during a hypnotic identity delusion. These experiments indexed the specificity, source, perspective, and qualitative features of autobiographical memories elicited during a suggested identity delusion. Chapter 4 presents two experiments that investigated memory processing during a hypnotic identity delusion. These experiments illustrated the shifting accessibility of autobiographical memories during a hypnotic identity delusion. Finally, Chapter 5 draws the empirical findings together to discuss the value of hypnosis as a technique for modelling identity delusions and the ways in which a hypnotic identity delusion influences autobiographical memory. Importantly, Chapter 5 proposes a model of deluded autobiographical memory that integrates Conway???s (2005) self-memory system with relevant aspects of Langdon and Coltheart???s (2000) two-factor theory of delusions. Using this proposed model as a framework, Chapter 5 discusses the clinical and theoretical implications of the findings from this thesis and suggests future research directions.

Abstract:
Background – Corporate identity has emerged as an interesting subject. Companies’ care about how people perceive them and it is important for companies that people have a good impression about them. Catastrophes and other happenings can seriously harm a company. Corporate identity is concerned with the personality of the organization. It is designed to help the organization to achieve its goals. The term is rather complex and contains many different aspects.   One of BP’s oilrigs in the Gulf of Mexico sank due to an explosion. It became an environmental catastrophe with oil spread over gigantic areas. BP was accused of acting slowly and preventing media to reach the polluted beaches. Further, they have also influenced the search results on Google. BP has created a bad reputation in the market due to the way they have been handling the oil spill. The public has started to question the actions by BP and they have started to express opinions about the company.   This study will cover the different expression the public opinion has been taken against BP. Further, it will cover how those impressions have been affected the corporate identity of BP. Purpose – The aim of this study is to measure if and to which extent BP’s Corporate Identity has been affected by public opinion, due to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in spring 2010. Method – The study employs a qualitative method. The data is based on primary data collection from online newspapers journals and scientific books. The theoretical section is based on information gathered mostly from journals and scientific books while the information about the oil spill comes mostly from online newspapers. Findings/Conclusions– My research found that the public opinion has been affecting BP’s corporate identity negatively. Further, BP’s actions after the disaster have contributed to the negative opinion about the company. The Greenpeace and Facebook action has helped to spread the public opinion.

Abstract:
Through the lens of identity process theory, the present thesis explores: (i) the qualitative nature of British national and ethnic attachments and their respective outcomes for identity processes among British South Asians (BSA); and (ii) the impact of media representations for identification and identity processes. In study I, 20 first generation South Asians (FGSA) were interviewed regarding identity, national and ethnic group memberships and inter-ethnic relations. The results revealed that (i) social representations of the ethnic 'homeland' could accentuate national attachment, but that both national and ethnic identities could have positive outcomes for identity processes in distinct social contexts; (ii) the phenomenological importance of 'special moments' and family identity can shape and accentuate national identification; (iii) ethnic and national identities are strategically 'managed' in order to achieve psychological coherence. In study II, 20 second generation South Asians (SGSA) were interviewed regarding similar issues. The results revealed that (i) SGSAs' awareness of the hardship faced by FGSA in the early stages of migration could induce disidentification with Britishness and accentuate identification with the ethnic group; (ii) the Press may be regarded as excluding BSA from Britishness; (iii) SGSA may manifest hybridised identities to enhance psychological coherence. In study III, a sample of 50 tabloid articles regarding BSA was analysed qualitatively. The results revealed that (i) BSA are constructed as 'deviating' from self-aspects of Britishness; (ii) BSA may be represented in terms of a hybridised threat to the ethno-national ingroup. Study IV investigated some of the findings of the previous studies quantitatively. The questionnaire was administered to 215 BSA. A series of statistical analyses confirmed (i) the impact of negative media representations of one's ethnic group for identity processes; (ii) the accentuation of ethnic identity and attenuation of British national identity as a result of exposure to negative media representations; (iii) a weaker national attachment among British Pakistanis than British Indians. It is argued that levels of British national and ethnic identities will likely fluctuate in accordance with social and temporal context and that BSA will make strategic use of both identities in order to optimise identity processes.

Saltzburg, Nicole L. "Developing a Model of Transmasculine Identity." Scholarly Repository, 2010. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_dissertations/432.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditional psychotherapy with transgender clients has focused on helping gender dysphoric individuals assume an "opposite" gender role. However, recently, there have been calls for trans-positive therapy focusing on the exploration and affirmation of alternative gender identifications. The majority of the research on transgender identity has been conducted with male-to-female (MTF) identified, or transfeminine, individuals. Comparatively little attention has been given to the experience of female-to-male (FTM) identified, or transmasculine, individuals. The primary goal of this study was to explore constructs and identify underlying themes that transmasculine people use in constructing their gender identities in order to develop a structural model of transmasculine identity. Broadly speaking, results showed that transmasculine identity may be conceptualized on a continuum from an essentialist binary perspective to a constructivist non-binary perspective. This is reflected in the language the individual uses to self-identify - including identity labels, proper names and pronouns. Individuals define, experience, and embody transmasculine identities differently depending on a number of inter-related constructs including: (1) current stage of identity development and past transmasculine identity development events, (2) conceptions of masculinity and femininity, (3) context, and (4) sexuality. Further, if one of these constructs shifts it usually influences the others. Implications for theory, practice, and future research directions are discussed.

Farquharson, Kirsten Leigh. "Audience observations of art, identity and schizophrenia : possibilities for identity movement." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1012992.

Full text
Abstract:
This research situates itself in the study of stigma in mental illness. In particular, the aim is to explore the potential that art making and exhibiting has in reducing stigma for those with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. The research explores one aspect (the exhibition stage) of an "art as therapy" project. The exhibiting of one’s artwork aims to counter limiting "patient" identities by allowing those labelled as psychiatric patients to extend their self-identity to an alternative identity of the "artist". However, this idea only stands strong if the artwork created is not discriminated against as "naïve art" and is accepted or at least considered for acceptance as legitimate nonprofessional artwork. This research explores the ways in which art created by inpatients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia is received by the general art-viewing public at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa. The study uses a discourse analytic framework to analyse the interviews of members of the public who attended the art exhibition of patient artwork. It will examine the ways in which the public construct the artworks and how they position the makers of this art across a continuum, from patient to artist. The results of this thesis have implications for rehabilitation practices for people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia particularly with regard to opportunities to "perform" alternative identities in public spaces.

Full text
Abstract:
One problem with the traditional marketing segmentation view of consumer markets is that it treats social categories as an ontology, which somehow becomes independent of its own members. It assumes that the self is required to adjust to its segment. In my research, I follow writers such as Hall (1996) who claim that consumer identity is not a reflection of a fixed, natural, state of being but a process of becoming. The meaning of social economic class, Britishness, religion, masculinity and so forth, are subject to continual change. Identity then becomes a ‘cut’ or a snapshot of unfolding meanings; it is a strategic positioning of the individual, which makes meaning possible. My primary research focuses on one cultural category - second generation British South Asian. This is a group of consumers who are required to negotiate with multiple discourses – local, global, past, present, future, western, eastern, religious, national, popular culture and more - and with many social and cultural categories - British society, South Asian community, county of origin, religion, professional identity and others. The mainstream literature takes an essentialist view when analysing this group treating ethnic minority consumers as acculturating individuals who hold a hyphenated identity and who have to balance pressures from two sides of the hyphen- South Asian and BritishIn my research I take inspiration from Hall (1996) and treat ethnicity in its de-totalised, or deconstructed forms, recognising ethnicity as a concept that cannot be thought of in the ‘old way’ as representing essential, discrete differences between groups. Ethnicity and race are conceptualised here as socially constructed, relationally and culturally locatedMy data collection strategy is designed to help participants (Sample size of 13) to explore the landscape of their self by eliciting life narratives and their constituent attachments. The data were collected in two stages. The initial phase is based on the collection of 2 collages one of self-identity and one of shopping experience. The objective of this phase was to give the participants an opportunity to explore and map the different discursive influences in their lives. The second stage uses a narrative interview where the collages were used as a guide for the structure of the conversation. The findings of this research confirm a picture of self-identity as a ‘Field of Discursivity’ (Laclau and Mouffe, 1985) where self-identity can be viewed as a field in which no one discourse can fully master the others. Consequently, ‘who one is’ becomes an open question, with a shifting answer depending upon the positions available between one's own and others' discursive practices and within those practices. This understanding is the foundation of my claim that traditional marketing discussion rests on a flawed assumption which renders segmentation strategy incompatible with current market reality.

Full text
Abstract:
Embryonic stem cell research has the potential to revolutionise both the practice of medicine and our understanding of the human body. Although the usual technical and financial limitations of research apply, perhaps the greatest obstacle to the progress of this research at the present time is the ethical concerns surrounding the destruction of early human embryos. The established debate over the ethical significance of the early embryo has thus taken on renewed importance. Within biology stem cell research has begun to overturn some long held assumptions about the roles of genes and cellular interaction in development. Building on recent advances in stem cell biology I develop a concept of Form that neatly captures what it is to be individuals like us in biological terms. Form not only defines a biological individual that exists across time regardless of changes in its physical constituents but also provides the biological foundation for our higher mental properties and our identity as persons. At the heart of the embryo debate is confusion over what human individuals are and therefore when they began. Defining when we began as the ethically significant individuals that we are now is the key to the embryo debate. Our metaphysics of identity is thus crucial to understanding the moral significance of the embryo. Compared to alternative understandings of identity within the debate surrounding the embryo Form provides compelling reasons why the very early embryo, at the stage that embryonic stem cells are derived, lacks any right to life or associated ethical significance. The derivation of embryonic stem cells is thus found to be ethically permissible.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1995.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 119-120).
If the design of a building originates from the place in which it is built, from the social traditions of that place, and from building traditions which are specific to local materials and climate, then it will project an identity different from that of a building with the same program in a different culture. The question I pose is how far can an approach of regionalism get us toward an architecture which reinforces the particular qualities of life in a specific culture. What are its benefits, what are its limits? The program is a marine research laboratory located on a tidal river in mid-coast Maine. I have chosen the Maine coast as a case study for its strength of individuality and relative isolation from suburban influences. Civilization is marching steadily onward, and Maine will be one of the next places to deal with the cultural entropy which has enveloped the rest of the Nation. Rather than employ historical quotation or imitation to derive a basis for new design, I distill existing properties such as site orientation, inhabitation of topography, use of materials, building systems, and social organization to their most fundamental principles. From these principles, a design strategy can be developed in terms of a vocabulary of forms, materials, organizations, and orientation which will evoke a sense of place consistent with the regional identity, and can be reinterpreted for new programs and technologies which are necessitated by today's building requirements. Over time, new possibilities regarding construction materials, glass technology, insulation, heating, air conditioning and water systems have replaced traditional methods of construction common to the vernacular architecture of the region. While many things have changed, certain fundamental relationships between the building and local environment have not, such as wind strength and direction, vegetation, availability of sunlight, durability of local materials, and local geology and resources, which can still be valuable in the design of a building for this area. This project, therefore, focuses on understanding what is really important about a particular site or situation, and reinventing a formal expression for that idea which complements the existing experience, while proposing a new way of understanding its qualities.

Abstract:
This is a report that tells the journey of the master project Grey Square. It is a project that is rooted in cultural, national and racial identity in relation to symbolism and stereotypes, through the investigation of the scarf as an object often associated with a variety of these identities. The scarf is observed through the understandings of semiotics, material culture and visual culture, and the report gives you an account of the art project’s different processes and methods in reaching its final visual design. By examining the scarf the intention is to become aware of your gaze and participation in creating meanings, symbols and stereotypes.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 126-139.
Given South Africa's ethnic complexities, comparatively little has been written about the group known as white English-speaking South Africans, or WESSAs. This is partly because of the lack of collective sentiment shared by people categorised as WESSAs, partly because the group boundaries are not clear-cut, and partly because on the surface there appears to be little that can be said about them. Besides a proclivity for business, a continued attachment to Europe and an apparent inability to organise politically, the acollectivity of the group has been the focus of the literature on the subject, and its cause has been a matter of some bewilderment on the part of authors. This work examines WESSA identity from a new perspective, one influenced by the proliferation of writings on the topic of "whiteness" in Europe and America in recent years. These writings concentrate on how whiteness as a set of discourses positions being white as neutral or "raceless", in contrast to other race groups who are constructed as "ethnic".

Abstract:
The dissertation deals with the issue of the corporate identity of the Academy of Sciences of the CR (ASCR). Through secondary and primary qualitative and quantitative research projects, the corporate identity of the ASCR is analysed in the internal and external milieus of the institution, in the European Area generally and also in comparison with Great Britain. The main aim of the dissertation is the proposal of a model of the corporate identity of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic with a focus on the area of science popularisation and communication, namely for the purpose of improving the image of the ASCR and increasing the awareness of the general beneficial effect of science and research among the lay and specialised public in the Czech Republic. The proposal of the model is elaborated on its theoretical bases utilising background materials arising from the research projects conducted. The enrichment of the Czech scientific milieu by a deeper view into the general issue and an investigation of corporate identity in the CR and globally can be considered as the contribution of the dissertation in the area of the theory of marketing. The theoretical contribution of the work is also the proposal of a model of corporate identity for the ASCR and the other scientific-research institutions with a similar focus. The practical contribution of the dissertation is the possible utilisation of the proposed model of the corporate identity of the ASCR at the Academy of Sciences of the CR, at the scientific workplaces of the ASCR and at the other scientific-research institutions of a similar focus in the CR and around the world.

This study is an intertwined critical autoethnography through which my experiences, my stories, are woven together with memories of family, students, and teaching career. Together, the telling of these stories will explore how I negotiated my identity development throughout my middle and high school experiences at a time when I could have been labeled as an at-risk student. The development into my professional career and personal life all influenced strongly by my participation in music education. Filtering these stories and memories through the lens of critical whiteness theory, this study interrogates the social assumptions that may be placed on at-risk students, exploring how these assumptions function within the context of access within our current music education structures, and investigates the ways in which social support systems allow opportunities for access of white male students and privilege in music education. An overarching question guiding this research is: How does the interrogation of such white privileges inform how one develops their identity as a music educator, a researcher, an academic, a husband, a father, a human, as well as, the curricular structures in place guiding access within music education?

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the ways in which concepts of binary opposition are elaborated in some of the key contemporary theories on difference and identity. This project contributes to the emerging scholarship on the notion of emancipation and empowerment in educational theory. It explores discourses of difference and identity that are engaged with constructions and re-construction of the notions of Self and Other. This thesis develops a systematic analysis of texts with arguments on political performance of representation and agency. The thesis begins with an examination of Hegel's thesis on the relationship between the lord and the bondsman which is implemented in the political discourses of John Rex and Paulo Freire. It continues to examine political theses with emphasis on the relationship between the mind and the body; examinations include theses offered by Robert Miles and Frantz Fanon. This thesis also explores the methodological value of concepts of binary opposition; it explores Claude Lévi-Strauss' theory on cultural differences and examines Iris M. Young and Chantal Mouffe's discourses on the 'politics of difference'. This thesis further explores Jacques Derrida's notions of deconstruction and différence together with analyses and critiques of Homi Bhabha's and Gayatri Spivak's reconstruction of concepts of binary oppositions. This thesis calls for a consideration of Derrida's thoughts on the political as an approach to the understanding difference and identity. I propose a double reading of the texts examined in this thesis: on the one hand, they are genealogical analyses to understand and criticise the ways in which knowledge on (racial and cultural) difference and identity have been constructed. On the other hand, they are given affirmations of political significance with their performative effectiveness that language allows them to achieve.

The introduction explores the conceptual links between Social Representations Theory (Moscovici, 1961), and Social Identity (Tajfel & Turner, 1986) and Self-categorisation (Turner et al. 1987) theories. These links are then studied from different perspectives through three series of empirical studies. The first series addresses the effects of the context of inter-group comparison on self-stereotypes held by French-speaking and Dutch-speaking Belgians. The second is devoted to the study of the relations between national and European identities and social representations of the European integration process. Finally, a third empirical study examines the relations between social representations and identity processes in a period of crisis through a study of naïve explanations of the Dutroux affair (kidnapping and murder of children).

Abstract:
ADHD, attention deficit hyperactive disorder was first described as such in the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, the DSM in 1987. Since then the disorder has had great interest from research but also from society. The amount of ADHD diagnoses has increased every year since the disorder has been established by the American Psychiatric Association and is in recent years the most established mental illness among children and adults. The goal of this paper is to explore how people diagnosed with ADHD subjectively define and experience the abstract object of ADHD. Previous research focuses on mapping the problems and impairments resulting from this “illness”, to gain more insight into the differences between people diagnosed with ADHD, and people who do not possess the described symptoms, often focused on the problems people experience. Social constructionists look upon ADHD as socially constructed; a socially valued dysfunction, a deviant pattern of behaviour was once observed and categorised into what we now call symptoms. The word symptom demonstrates indication or evidence, and the abstract object takes on disease like properties. The object becomes reified, which means as much as become real. The result is that ADHD is seen as the cause of problems, instead of a group of problems that was once labelled ADHD. The informants used for this research seem to have problems with controlling their impulses, which besides negatively influencing executive functioning, causes problems with social interaction. The informants often express feeling misunderstood by their environment, they feel different. They feel discriminated against by the structures of school, work and society as a whole which, they feel, impairs their abilities and missuses their talents. They express to feel at ease when they are fully occupied with something interesting and seem to call for understanding for their inabilities and space to develop their talents.

Zelef, Mustafa Haluk. "A Research On The Representation Of Turkish National Identity: Buildings Abroad." Phd thesis, METU, 2004. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/924522/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is the result of an attempt to record, classify and develop an understanding of the motivations and dynamics in the design and realization of the buildings that explicitly or implicitly represent the Turkish identity abroad. In the meantime it is aimed to reflect on and identify the function of architecture and buildings in the formulation and representation of national identity. Besides the analysis of the meanings assigned to the architectural forms, one underlying intention was to clarify how different aspects of architecture and building processes could play roles in the construction and representation of national identity within the context of the embassies, monuments, exhibition pavilions and centers for cultural and religious purposes. During the analysis of these architectural works, basic mechanisms of the concept of identity and its repercussions in relation to physical milieus -i.e. its comparative nature, its reception by the others- are tried to be elaborated. Cases other than the Turkish case are referred to when necessary. Viewpoints of variety of actors in the realization of these works -i.e. architects, diplomats, statesmen and contractors- are analyzed to elucidate the similarities and differences of approaches. iv Besides the role of international relations, the dominant social, political and economic characteristics in different historical periods of Turkey and their implications on the buildings abroad are exposed by this study. Reactions of the architectural discourse in Turkey to those characteristics concerning the national identity, i.e. foreign architects, globalization, and promotion of architects by the state, are elaborated. While some themes are perennial at the discursive and formal level, variations of attitudes regarding the host context are observed in the study.

Abstract:
Background: Companies nowadays cannot differentiate efficiently enough through their products, therefore require strong brand identities. Especially start-up companies without fully developed products rely on the brand identity to communicate efficiently with its potential customers. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe the brand identity of a start-up by applying commonly used models of brand identity and to see the extent of applicability of these models in the case of a start-up. Design/Methodology/Approach: Qualitative research that includes semi-structured interviews with seven participants, where five interviewees work within the company and two interviewees who have a close working connection to it. Findings: The models used are to a small extent applicable in terms of brand personality and brand culture. A brand identity has been described from the same perspectives. Theoretical and Managerial Implication: Adjustment of existing models according to changes in business related settings is argued. Further establishment of the components of brand culture is recommended.

Davis, Natasha. "Performing migratory identity : practice-as-research on displacement and (be)longing." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2016. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/80978/.

Full text
Abstract:
Drawing on autobiographical material related to the author of this thesis, Natasha Davis, and using her own performance practice within relevant artistic and theoretical contexts, the thesis focuses on practice-as-research (PaR) as a means of exploring questions around the trauma of displacement due to migration. It investigates how the creative work of a performance artist, who uses body and memory as critical performance tools, reveals the logic of exilic subjectivity and materiality, as well as the political status of performance as a medium dealing with this complex theme. It does this in three distinct stages. First, it provides brief autobiographical and historical background to the civil war in former Yugoslavia (in the 1990s), which centrally informs the performance works analysed here. Second, it sets up an initial encounter with the reader, Encounter One, in which Davis’ trilogy of works Rupture, Asphyxia and Suspended is examined, making use of practice-based research findings to identify useful methodologies such as repetitive returns to the source of trauma, placing the body out of balance and fragmentary composition. Third, in Encounter Two, a brief overview is provided of current PaR theory as it pertains to the project in question. The thesis then applies these combined findings from the trilogy and PaR theory to the new intermedial PaR project Internal Terrains, which represents in live and documented form half of the thesis overall, to generate new discourses around the trauma of displacement and notions of home and belonging. Starting the investigation with objects rather than the body of the performer, Encounter Two pays attention to methodologies applied in previous research and sources new tools useful in illuminating displacement as rooted both in loss and liberation. At the same time it explores ways that PaR can be written about, which includes investigating how practice can perform on the page. Examining the original impact of the trauma of migration through to the ways traumatic pasts can be put to rest, the thesis argues that one of the ways the latter can be achieved is through repetitive and structured returns to the past and through recognising and embracing a state of being ‘out of balance’.

"On and Off the Street and Somewhere in Between: Identity Performance Among Adolescents Living On (and Off) the Streets of Lima, Peru." Doctoral diss., 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.9119.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: In this dissertation I present data gathered from an eleven-month qualitative research study with adolescents living and working on the streets of Lima, Peru. Through the pairing of photovoice with participant observations, this work incorporates distinctive methodological and theoretical viewpoints in order to complicate prevailing understandings of street life. In this dissertation, I examine the identities that children and adolescents on the street develop in context, and the ways in which photography can be a useful tool in understanding identity development among this population. Through a framework integrating theories of identity and identity performance with spatial theories, I outline how identity development among children and adolescents living on the street is directly connected to their relationships with the urban landscape and the outreach organizations that serve them. The organizations and institutions that surround children on the street shape who they are, how they are perceived by society, and how they view and understand themselves in context. It is through the interaction with aid organizations and the urban landscape that a street identity is learned and developed. Furthermore, as organizations, children and adolescents come together within the context of the city, a unique street space is created. I argue that identity and agency are directly tied to this space. I also present the street as a thirdspace of possibility, where children and adolescents are able to act out various aspects of the self that they would be unable to pursue otherwise. Weaved throughout this dissertation are non-traditional writing forms including narrative and critical personal narrative addressing my own experiences conducting this research, my impact on the research context, and how I understand the data gathered.

Warren, Jana. "Vybrané psychologické aspekty židovské identity v současné české společnosti." Master's thesis, 2015. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-337570.

Full text
Abstract:
This diploma thesis focuses on selected psychological aspects of Jewish identity, namely its content and meaning in contemporary Czech society. It reviews how the bearers of this identity understand and feel positive or negative aspects related to it in their lives. The theoretical part introduces the field of identity in psychology in general and subsequently focuses specifically on Jewish identity. The chosen theoretical model of identity, adjusted to the Czech environment, represents the basis for applied research of this identity. The empirical part is conducted as a qualitative study by means of interpretative phenomenological analysis of in-depth semi-structured interviews. The results mapping contemporary Jewish identity in Czech society should be utilised to raise awareness about this frequently overlooked topic and perhaps also further utilised by professionals who encounter Jewish identity in their work.
