Abstract:
Current literature claims that the graduate students’ personal aspects not only influence research training outcomes, but they also serve as a mediator between students’ research activity and research training environment. In previous studies, key predictors of scholarly/research productivity among counseling graduate students have been investigated (Brown, Lent, Ryan, & McPartland, 1996; Kahn, 2001; Kahn & Scott, 1997). However, only 17% of the variance in three factors—research self-efficacy, research interests, and number of years in a program—predicted student research activities directly and research training environment indirectly. Bandura’s social cognitive theory was utilized as the conceptual framework for the study. Data was collected through SurveyMonkey™, an online source that surveyed 292 counseling doctoral students currently enrolled in 90 counseling doctoral programs across the United States. The findings from a factor analysis conducted in the present study indicated, the RIFPQ-R developed by the researcher was a reliable and valid instrument. Additionally, the findings showed that counseling doctoral students’ researcher identity correlated significantly with students’ research activity and research training environment; however, the correlations were weak. Finally, using two multiple regression analyses, students’ research experiences before admission to program, number of credit hours completed in qualitative and quantitative research, number of years enrolled in their program, and weekly hours spent doing research predicted a small portion of variance in students’ reported researcher identity and research activity.

Dearden, Jackie. "Introducing facilitated communication training : an action research project." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2005. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11136/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Facilitated Communication Training (FCT) is a controversial approach to supporting people with severe communication difficulties. It is one method of supporting Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC). It has the potential for enabling people with severe language impairments to access communication aids. The local education authority had experience of enabling a non-verbal young person with cerebral palsy who uses FCT to access mainstream education and were open to exploring whether other young people could benefit from this support. Aims: To explore ways of introducing FCT within the local authority in order to enhance the communication of young people who had been identified as not having had access to the means of reaching their communication potential. Method: An action research approach resulted in the implementation of a pilot project. AAC/FCT was introduced to a group of seven pupils and the adults who support them through a training and support programme. A case study methodology was used to analyse the outcomes for pupils and adults. Results: Action research was found to support the introduction of FCT. Some pupils showed significant gains through access to AAC/FCT. The majority of adults reported changes in their knowledge, use and attitudes towards AAC/FCT. Many attributed this to an increased belief in pupils' potential. Conclusions: Action research is an effective process in supporting change. There is a theoretical basis for explaining why FCT supports some pupils. The discourse used to describe FCT could be further supported by using theories that take account of context (mediated learning and activity theory) and could contribute to changing the negative historical and socio-cultural discourse associated with FCT. An effective training and ongoing support programme lead to changes in adults' practise.

The growing demand of scientific research, regulatory agencies and the need to maximize participant safety have required efficient, capable and precise management to conduct high-quality clinical research studies and improve the competitiveness in this field. To face up to this challenge, clinical research centers have emerged to support the operational, methodological and regulatory requirements. This work reports on my experience since September 2011 until June 2012 in a clinical research centre coordinating and monitoring the clinical trials in the Neurological Clinical Research Unit of Instituto de Medicina Molecular, the Pharmacovigilance activities performed in a regional unit of the Portuguese Pharmacovigilance System and the Science Management tasks developed involving these two units. As a curricular internship aimed to put into practice the concepts learnt in the first year of master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Biomedicine, I had the opportunity to experience different roles linked to the clinical research and realize the responsibilities and expectations involved in each one of them. This curricular training provided a realistic vision of a clinical research center as well as the interactions between different professionals.

Abstract:
Empirically supported treatments (ESTs) now exist for a variety of psychological disorders; however, few individuals have access to these treatments and even fewer receive them in well delivered form. This has been termed the research-practice gap. It is likely that a combination of factors contribute to individuals not receiving good quality ESTs. One major reason is the limited availability of effective training in these treatments. Although many therapists wish to learn such treatments, they seldom have the opportunity as training relies on scarce expert resources and is costly. Furthermore, relatively little is known about the effectiveness of this method or how best to train clinicians: despite having evidence-based treatments, there are no evidence-based trainings. This dissertation examined one example of an EST - enhanced cognitive behavior therapy for eating disorders (CBT-E) - with the overarching aim of evaluating both existing, and commonly accepted, training methods, as well as, newly developed more scalable ones. How best to train clinicians in CBT for eating disorders has not been investigated previously. The Kirkpatrick training evaluation framework was adopted to guide the studies. Chapter One provided an overview of the research-practice gap with a particular emphasis on the obstacles faced in training therapists. Chapter Two reviewed the literature on training in ESTs and highlighted gaps in the research evidence and areas for improvement in future studies. An important conclusion was that, although studies varied in design and the precise form and content of the training investigated, results were mostly consistent in indicating that knowledge and skills tended to improve following training. However, the outcome measures used to assess training were often poorly described with unknown psychometric properties. Perhaps most importantly the lack of clearly defined competence cut-points made interpretation difficult. In addition, much of the training investigated had limitations in terms of scalability. Chapters Three, Four and Five, aimed to overcome some of these difficulties and provided a series of studies investigating training in CBT-E. Chapter Three employed qualitative methods to investigate trainees' reaction to conventional workshop and more scalable web-based training and found that although trainees enjoyed training, they had a variety of reasons for not planning to implement the treatment as learned. Chapters Four and Five evaluated the impact of different forms of training on knowledge and skill acquisition respectively. Training in CBT-E was associated with increases in knowledge especially when paired with supervision or scalable guidance, which proved feasible and acceptable to clinician trainees. The results for skill acquisition were less clear, but the new scalable online training was associated with therapists achieving competence. Finally Chapter Six discussed the broader implications of the work and highlighted areas for future research.

Given the desire to create interactive websites that effectively engage and instruct medical professionals, an alternative model for online case studies was developed. The resulting application presents the user with a virtual patient, asks for information regarding the treatment and care of that patient, and provides customized feedback to the user. When a person uses this application, one could say the goal of the user is to make the necessary decisions that will stabilize the patient, and the goal of the application is to provide feedback regarding those decisions. In order to adapt to user decisions, the design incorporates an unconventional use of decision analysis. The source of uncertainty is the clinician's strategy, or sequence of decisions. Given the user's decision, the appropriate system response is assumed to be uncertain a priori. The proposed model requires the application to conduct an internal analysis, and then condition the response on the circumstances under which the decision is made. This conditioning approach informs the patient's behavior during the simulation, and it determines the appropriate constructive feedback for the user. Intuitively, a system constructed using the proposed model is better suited to address the educational needs of an individual learner. Also, despite the context of this model, it is noted that the proposed model need not be restricted to medical applications.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between research self-efficacy (as measured by the Research Self-Efficacy Scale [Greeley et al., 1989]), perceptions of the research training environment (as measured by the Research Training Environment Scale --Revised [Gelso et al., 1996]), and interest in research (as measured by the Interest in Research Questionnaire [Bieschke & Bishop, 1994]) within a national sample of doctoral counselor education students (N = 89). Additionally, the study investigated whether there were differences between levels of research self-efficacy, perceptions of the research training environment, and interest in research in relation to the demographic characteristics (i.e., age, gender, race/ethnicity, scholarly productivity, reported professional aspirations, and number of doctoral-level research courses completed) of counselor education doctoral students. An ex-post facto, cross-sectional design was implemented which included the following statistical analyses: Pearson’s correlation coefficients (two-tailed), simultaneous multiple regression, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Findings identified that the demographic variables of age and doctoral-level research courses completed had a statistically significant effect upon perceptions of the research training environment. In addition, results suggested that scholarly activity had a statistically significant effect on research self-efficacy scores. Finally, interest in research was positively correlated with research self-efficacy scores. In summary, the study addressed the present void in the counselor education literature with regard to counselor education doctoral students’ development in the areas of research self-efficacy, perceptions of the research training environment, and interest in research. In order to contribute to the counselor education literature and support doctoral student development, it is crucial that counselor education doctoral training programs provide an effective research training environment to foster and encourage student research. Recognizing and appreciating the influence of counselor education doctoral students’ research self-efficacy, perceptions of the research training environment, and interest in research may not only be important for students, but is also necessary for counselor education doctoral preparation programs to continue to develop and prepare students for academic positions and success. Study findings may provide beneficial information to assist colleges and universities to develop and tailor polices to encourage and foster research amongst their doctoral counselor education students.

Huang, Yuanshu. "Employee training and assignment for team-based manufacturing systems." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/284009.

Full text
Abstract:
Cellular manufacturing has been extensively adopted as a measure to reduce cycle time, increase productivity, and improve product quality. The past research in cellular manufacturing has focused on the methodology for identification of machine groups, part families, and determination of processing routes while the relocation of existent workers into cells and their training for cellular manufacturing environment have been ignored. However, several industrial surveys show that human and administrative issues are a major unsolved problem in implementing cells. Human issues in the cell formation process have received little attention in the literature. This dissertation develops methods for guiding the assignment of workers to cells and determination of training plans and task assignments for workers. An integer programming model is first proposed to determine the assignment of workers to cells and the aggregate training needs for each cell with consideration of meeting the technical and administrative skill requirements in each cell. In addition to the technical and administrative skills, team synergy level predicted on the basis of the combination of individual personality-related traits, and individual job fitness are then included in the consideration for building high performance teams. A mixed integer programming model is formulated with objective to create effective manufacturing teams meeting cell requirements with low training cost, high team synergy level, and compatibility between workers and tasks. Several solution methods including greedy heuristics, beam search, filtered beam search, and simulated annealing techniques are developed for solving the mathematical models. They are tested and compared to a standard optimization software for a set of test problems. Results indicate that problem size, initial mix of skills, and the skill requirements of cells in the data set impact the difficulty of obtaining good solutions. Nevertheless, it appears that heuristics such as beam search are capable of obtaining good solutions with reasonable computational effort. Directions for future work are discussed at the conclusion of this dissertation.

Abstract:
Background: The managers of Zenith Medical Centre, a Nigerian hospital, desired to experiment a change to a process of evaluation that could improve training effectiveness for all stakeholders. Concern about evaluating training for effectiveness is not new. The past 50 years have witnessed a growing number of evaluation methods developed by scholars and practitioners to provide human resource development (HRD) professionals with alternatives for measuring training outcomes. However, investigation on the uses of evaluation data to improve training outcomes from the perspectives of divergent stakeholders is limited. Participatory evaluation (PE) through action research (AR) intervention was particularly considered as a viable means of improving training effectiveness by increased use of evaluation data. Aims of the Investigation: The aims of the intervention were to deepen insight and understanding of PE from the perspectives of stakeholders, practically implement a change of the evaluation system and produce new knowledge for the action research community. Design/Methodology/Approach: The action research approach was used from a social constructionist perspective to engage training stakeholders in the organization as participants. This perspective required working in the participatory action research (PAR) mode. Therefore, the project followed a cyclical process model (CPM) of the AR iterative process of constructing, planning, acting and evaluating. The CPM model was to accommodate the quality principles for using theory to both guide issue diagnosis and reflection on the intervention. Data on participatory evaluation were generated through focus groups and one-on-one interviews and analyzed using template analysis. Findings: By identifying and discussing their stakes, contributions and inducements in training, participants were able to reflect on their own learning, gain insight into their own work situation by sharing experiences and these facilitated peer and management support. The results were deeper insight into training evaluation; change in behavior and perceptions; and the use of quality data to improve training design, delivery and participation. The participatory process also enabled participants to learn self-direction and self-management by becoming aware of discussing problems or issues of concern to them in the workplace, group coherence and social support. Profoundly, all levels of stakeholders tried actively to change their working conditions by participating in action research activities. Implications: The study has implications for research and practice in three perspectives: First-person implications of deepening the researcher’s understanding and knowledge and providing professional development for his practice; second-person implications of deepening understanding and knowledge and providing improved day-to-day practice for the participants, practical solutions to the issue and organizational learning for the client; and third-person implication of providing specific knowledge for the wider action research community. Limitations: The research does not cover the political implications of the findings and opportunities they create for further research. It is limited to evaluation process while leaving out organizational decision making which is another factor affecting the utilization of evaluation data. Future studies should consider the question of what happens if the process of evaluation is right but the organizational politics or decision making structures hinders evaluation use.

Abstract:
For several decades now, physician-scientists have been referred to as an “endangered species.” Many factors have contributed to the dearth of clinical investigators, and training programs in clinical research are just one tool in a multi-pronged strategy to increase the number of successful physician-scientists working in health research. A qualitative approach that analyzes students’ educational goals and experiences can help fill the gaps in our knowledge about how best to train aspiring physician-scientists. This study was an interpretive phenomenology that evaluated the Master of Science program in Clinical and Translational Research (MSCTR) at the University of Cincinnati. The purpose of the study was to allow students to articulate their expectations, needs, and experiences in the MSCTR. The study included a group level assessment (GLA) and document review. Findings suggest several reasons students enrolled in the MSCTR, as well as some areas for improvement in the program: more physician-centered classes, a more directed curriculum, and a more cohesive course plan overall. Conclusions from these recommendations are that student perspectives can inform decisions around curricula and instructional methods in powerful ways, particularly when combined with a qualitative methodological approach. This study revealed several insights into how faculty and administrators can more effectively train physicians in research methodology. Training should be as applied and relevant as possible to make it directly applicable to clinical practice. This goal could be enhanced if classes – particularly statistics classes – were more physician-oriented. The curriculum of a clinical research training program for clinicians should be clear and directed, but with some flexibility and space within the curriculum for classes within areas of specialization. Collaboration should be integrated throughout, and courses should follow a logical, interconnected sequence.

Abstract:
This thesis represents an attempt to develop a systematic critique of various forms of educational research, contemporary and historical. Much has been written on educational research, some of it critical of individual elements or styles, but little by way of the overt establishment of a set of criteria which is then applied to an understanding and critique of major forms of educational research, quantitative and qualitative, macro and micro. In this thesis, I attempt to develop such a set of criteria, to be drawn variously from selected literature in contemporary philosophy of science, and social theory and critique, which may then be so applied. The structure of the thesis, then, is to initially develop and justify a set of criteria. This is followed by an examination of dominant strains of educational research in the nineteenth century and earlier, according to these criteria. Subsequently, these same criteria are applied to various more contemporary forms of educational research such as functionalism, ethnomethodology and phenomenology. In each case the genealogy, and basic assumptions are traced. Further, the application of the criteria allows a critique of shortcomings or biasses in each to be developed. For example functionalist assumptions with regard to socia change, and unilinear development are criticized, as also its normative orientation, and dependence on a misconceived biological analogy. Phenomenology and ethnomethodology are both criticized for their failure to embrace macro structures and concerns, and their dependence on an isolated and subjectivist ontology and epistemology. The thesis concludes with some recommendations for more satisfactory forms of research in education, and some examples of existing research which fulfil the criteria developed herein more, or less, satisfactorily.

National Train-quali Plan is our government to provide compensation and benefits for training organizations to improve training quality. Therefore it is important of the evaluation of training organization for applying the funds. This Article refers to the evaluation scale (PDDRO) provided by Train-quali Scorecard. Besides, we do Canonical Analysis to reveal the two combination indexes (Pre-plan and training organization performance) have positive relation (Hypothesis). Based on the hypothesis, we could claim that we can make great progress on the training organization performance by endeavoring pre-plan items (plan and design). The research goes by quantity analysis (55 samples) and case study (2 samples) of university’s educational centers. In practice, we hope the training organizations could design the proper Train-quali Scorecard for themselves to self-evaluate and to improve their training quality by using PDDRO Model for daily moments in the future.

Training is a wide and complicate function of management. This research wants to look training system with a macro view. To find the separate way and to compare one training types with another. This research will help a firm build a strong training system. From reviewing many research papers, this research finds two types of training system, called “invest-forward” and “defend-effectively”. They are separated by “long-term” or “short-term” of training spirit and “self-development” or “depend on others” of training execution. Then I use “qualitative interviewing” to interview six firms with different characteristics, and coding all training rules and executive ways. Then using the four elements of effective learning: “learning-centered”. “knowledge-centered”. “assessment-centered” and “community-centered” which are presented by Bransford、Brown & Cocking in 1999 to be a tool of content analysis, and clarifying the differences between the two training system types. Finally, this research presents 12 postulations. You can see the full content of postulations in upper Chinese abstract.

"ENHANCING THE RESIDENT RESEARCH TRAINING CLIMATE IN ANESTHESIOLOGY THROUGH ACTION RESEARCH." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10388/ETD-2015-03-2004.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this action research study was to understand the research training climate in anesthesiology at the University of Saskatchewan, and to collaboratively determine strategies for addressing persistent challenges to resident research training. Whilst there have been a number of published research training programs, influence over priorities has been top-down. Medical educators have lacked a model for collaboratively enhancing the research climate for trainees in anesthesiology. A three-phase, sequential mixed methods design was employed. In phase one, residents completed the revised Research Training Environment Scale as a quantitative measure of the research climate. In phase two, ten residents and six faculty mentors participated in semi-structured interviews to explore the underlying reasons for lower-scored items, and to generate suggestions for improvements to guide three simultaneous action research cycles. An advisory group collaboratively decided upon three actions for improvement of the research training climate. Phase three followed the initiation of three simultaneous action research cycles to reflexively evaluate the impact of these actions. The use of action research to identify shortcomings, generate solutions, and collaboratively choose actions for improving the research training program inspired changes to the research climate including: 1) the addition of research presentations by senior residents and faculty mentors at the research orientation for first-year residents to enhance communication of ongoing and new research ideas, and provide earlier exposure to faculty, 2) the creation of an online repository of research resources for enhanced communication of research ideas and to offer examples of past study-related documents, and 3) the encouragement of resident collaboration by offering a range of options such as involvement in individual projects, new team projects, and ongoing projects. Furthermore, during the course of this research, residents and faculty engaged in reflection-on-action and highlighted several additional suggestions for future action research cycles. This research offers two main contributions to theory. First, this study produced a model whereby action research could be used by others in pre-existing resident research training programs. Second, this study further conceptualized research culture in one postgraduate medical education, specifically by elucidating some of the underlying assumptions that formed the essence of the culture.

Abstract:
Indigenization of human resources and mental emancipation were among the priorities, explicit and implicit, of the African political and intellectual elites striving for meaningful independence. Education, namely training and research that was Afro-centric, was perceived as a means--if not sometimes as an end in itself--to achieve these priorities. Concurrently, in order to facilitate national self-assertion, African leaders advocated a context supporting non-alignment abroad and struggling against neo-colonialism at home. Limited resources in Africa made it necessary to utilize foreign training facilities in order to attain a reasonably rapid indigenization (Africanization) of human resources. Among those countries intervening with offers of education aid was the USSR, with a variety of formal and nonformal training programs. Innovation was shown both in its curricular and in its admissions procedures. In relationship to African priorities, Lumumba Friendship University and other Soviet training programs--formal and nonformal--may be characterized as participating in the processes of African indigenization, democratization, and conscientization, of which the latter was not welcomed by all African governments in power. Soviet research on Africa, with the support of Soviet political leadership at the highest level, was on record as having a willingness to place its resources at the disposal of the Third World decolonization movements. A significant increase in the quantity and quality of Soviet research on Africa occurred. A reorganization of African studies created a specialized institute on Africa. Soviet researchers were able to go beyond the secondary sources to which they had been previously restricted by colonial isolation to carry out policy-oriented research aimed, at least partly, at aiding the African decolonization efforts, including studies on the political role of the peasantry, resistance to colonialism, and the unity of African languages.

In recent years, human resource development has become a very important topic to most enterprises. To build up a comprehensive and sustain training system can lead to a better generation in human capital. Therefore, in additional to construct an effective training system, how training system can increase labor productivities is the key issue and ultimate goal, thus, to create higher value and competitiveness for a business. Thus, this research will investigate the relationship between training systems and training effectiveness, furthermore, to discuss the moderating effect of adding training evaluation system as an indicator. Hope the result of this study can be a very useful reference to businesses in the future. For those companies, who introduced the assessment of TTQS, will be the main target in our questionnaire survey, which from those survey, this study can further analyze the result in given hypothesis. In addition, new version of TTQS applicable training quality assessment indicators was launched in 2012, which has added supplement index 18 and 19. This study will use the BSC as a base to classify and analyze the training performance. The data from SPSs is as follow: 1. Comprehensive training system would result in higher training performance. 2. With comprehensive training evaluation system influence, training system would result in higher training performance. 3. When measure the training performance, BSC's four dimensions can use to be the direction of planning and measuring.
