The improvement of business processes is considered important to support companies competitiveness and sustainability, therefore, being highlighted in the academic community. In this way, the improvement of the organizational processes can be achieved through the business processes redesign, which is considered the most value-added phase in a business process management (BPM) project. However, despite the existence of an extensive literature on the subject of business processes redesign, methodologies or structured procedures that aim to understand the transformation from the as-is to the desired to-be processes are still scarce. Within this context, in order to fill this gap in the literature, this study presents the empirical findings and the lessons learnt from an action research with the objective of redesigning the logistic processes of a cultural production enterprise. The empirical study lasted nine months. A synthesis conceptual model for redesigning organizational business processes was proposed based on the literature. This model incorporated three tiers (i.e., organization, business processes and implementation) and provided guidance for conducting the empirical study. Different critical success factors and barriers have been identified and analyzed with a focus on organizational, social, and technical dimensions, resulting in contributions to scholars and to practitioners in redesigning business process approaches.

Carlin, Richard Michael. "Exploratory study on the process of early recollection interpretation." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25361.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explored the reasoning process of interpreters during the process of early recollection (ER) interpretation, and in the identification of central life style theme using Mosak's typology system (1971). ERs from ten subjects were collected using a guestionnaire format and distributed to six interpreters. Three interpreters were experienced in ER interpretation and three received two hours of training in ER interpretation prior to the study. All interpreters were requested to record their impressions and thoughts during the interpretive process on audio tape for later analysis, and to assign a primary and secondary life style theme to each subject using Mosak's typologies. The results of this study provided information about the cues found in ERs that seem to guide interpreters, the effect of interpreter style on the final outcome, and the reliability of inter-judge agreement on life style theme from ER interpretation. The results showed that training in ER interpretation immediately provided the trainees with an ability to identify the perceptual schema of the subjects but it did not give them the same skill possessed by the experienced clinicians in metaphor analysis or an understanding of Mosak's typology system. Similarities and differences between the experienced clinicians and the trainees were analyzed.

Lee, Heesook Ms. "The Relationships Between Research Training Environment, Researcher Identity Formation Process, and Research Activity Among Counseling Doctoral Students." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2017. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2335.

Full text
Abstract:
Current literature claims that the graduate students’ personal aspects not only influence research training outcomes, but they also serve as a mediator between students’ research activity and research training environment. In previous studies, key predictors of scholarly/research productivity among counseling graduate students have been investigated (Brown, Lent, Ryan, & McPartland, 1996; Kahn, 2001; Kahn & Scott, 1997). However, only 17% of the variance in three factors—research self-efficacy, research interests, and number of years in a program—predicted student research activities directly and research training environment indirectly. Bandura’s social cognitive theory was utilized as the conceptual framework for the study. Data was collected through SurveyMonkey™, an online source that surveyed 292 counseling doctoral students currently enrolled in 90 counseling doctoral programs across the United States. The findings from a factor analysis conducted in the present study indicated, the RIFPQ-R developed by the researcher was a reliable and valid instrument. Additionally, the findings showed that counseling doctoral students’ researcher identity correlated significantly with students’ research activity and research training environment; however, the correlations were weak. Finally, using two multiple regression analyses, students’ research experiences before admission to program, number of credit hours completed in qualitative and quantitative research, number of years enrolled in their program, and weekly hours spent doing research predicted a small portion of variance in students’ reported researcher identity and research activity.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA(VA))--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This work explores alternative ways of doing research within the field of art and design; ways that respect complexity and acknowledge the expansive, relational and performative nature of signifi- cation in arriving at ‘new’ knowledge. Through processes of designing in-between, I have been moving through opposites, connecting connections, and de(re)constructing structure. I have used my immediate locations as triggers to forge relations between an array of seeming disparate, albeit kindred, concepts. The scope of the work seems to have perpetually broadened, while theory and practice have dissolved in mercurial in- between states. Such exuding expansiveness has, at times, unsettled and unnerved, but ironically it has also intensely resembled our everyday ‘realities’. Designing in-between - compared to traditional, science-based research methods operating in barricaded systems of thought - thus allows for more faithful interrogation of the complexity of the world we live in. I believe this can be of great value in any attempt at innovative knowledge production, but especially attempts from within the field of art and design - a field often defined by its ability to challenge conventional ways of knowing. My work should not be regarded as yet another predetermined guideline for future research. It should rather be read as an example of a “conceptual tool” or “thought strateg[y]” (Hurst, 2010:242) suited to the complexity of the open systems we form part of every day. Neither the challenging, nor the advantageous, aspects of my work should be regarded as superior and exclusive to the other. The existence of dissonance and contrast is productive; a life force propelling the search for new significance and knowledge.

Abstract:

This work concentrates on the relationships between shapes and the lines those shapes are composed of as well as the process by which they are created. In this thesis, I intend to explore the different characteristics of wood and to visualize the language and meaning of the work which results both from those characteristics and from the artist.

As a maker, I have always been fascinated by the use of wood in the creation of objects. Man can control a material against its own intrinsic attributes to create something very different from that material's natural shape. My works concentrate on illustrating how wood reacts to external manipulation or physical force and how it can accordingly be transformed and yet still keep its original characteristics. Therefore, the process of the construction of the final piece is crucial in my work. The process embodies the relationship between outward control or manipulation and reaction from a material, and it creates the tension between the two entities, producing a physical structure and also a visual presentation. Additionally, this relationship encapsulates a deeper meaning; in the same manner in which the wood strains against the making act of the artist, so also does human nature strive against the outward influences which seek to control it. Through the work, I intend to clarify how human beings interact with each other and how those interactions create emotional tension.

Abstract:
Maturity models represent a feasible approach towards assessing business processes and identifying their potential improvements. Specifically, the Process and Enterprise Maturity Model (PEMM) has attracted much attention since its publication in 2007. However, few studies have explored its practical applicability. The large size of some business processes suggests that assessing their maturity at a sub-process level can help to uncover hidden inefficiencies and understand more accurately existing complexities. This paper therefore aims to examine the degree of applicability of the PEMM to an individual sub-process. To this end, an action research study was conducted in an organizational sub-process at a large Swedish organization. Data collection entailed in-situ participant observations involving employees and managers who were working in the sub-process. The results indicate that the PEMM was a useful framework for conducting an in-depth maturity analysis and identifying feasible improvements, which evidence that the model was applicable to the studied sub-process.

The long chain has been an important concept in the design of flexible processes. This design concept, as well as other sparse flexibility structures, have been applied by the automotive and other industries as a way to increase flexibility in order to better match available capacities with variable demands. Numerous empirical studies have validated the effectiveness of these structures. However, there is little theory that explains the effectiveness of the long chain, except when the system size is large, i.e., by applying an asymptotic analysis. Our attempt in this thesis is to develop a theory that explains the effectiveness of long chain and other sparse flexibility structures for finite size systems. We study the sales of sparse flexibility structures under both stochastic and worst-case demands. From our analysis, we not only provide rigorous explanation to the effectiveness of the long chain, but also refine guidelines in designing other sparse flexibility structures. Under stochastic demand, we first develop two deterministic properties, supermodularity and decomposition of the long chain, that serve as important building blocks in our analysis. Applying the supermodularity property, we show that the marginal benefit, i.e., the increase in expected sales, increases as the long chain is constructed, and the largest benefit is always achieved when the chain is closed by adding the last arc to the system. Then, applying the decomposition property, we develop four important results for the long chain under IID demands: (i) an effective algorithm to compute the performance of long chain using only matrix multiplications; (ii) a proof on the optimality of the long chain among all 2-flexibility structures; (iii) a result that the gap between the fill rate of full flexibility and that of the long chain increases with system size, thus implying that the effectiveness of the long chain relative to full flexibility increases as the number of products decreases; (iv) a risk-pooling result implying that the fill rate of a long chain increases with the number of products, but this increase converges to zero exponentially fast. Under worst-case demand, we propose the plant cover index, an index defined by a constrained bipartite vertex cover problem associated with a given flexibility structure. We show that the plant cover index allows for a comparison between the worst-case performances of two flexibility structures based only on their structures and is independent of the choice of the uncertainty set or the choice of the performance measure. More precisely, we show that if all of the plant cover indices of one structure are greater than or equal to the plant cover indices of the other structure, then the first structure is more robust than the second one, i.e. performs better in worst-case under any symmetric uncertainty set and a large class of performance measures. Applying this relation, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the long chain in worst-case performances, and derive a general heuristic that generates sparse flexibility structures which are tested to be effective under both stochastic and worst-case demands. Finally, to understand the effect of process flexibility in reducing logistics cost, we study a model where the manufacturer is required to satisfy deterministic product demand at different distribution centers. Under this model, we prove that if the cost of satisfying product demands at distribution centers is independent of production plants or distribution centers, then there always exists a long chain that is optimal among 2-flexibility structures. Moreover, when all plants and distribution centers are located on a line, we provide a characterization for the optimal long chain that minimizes the total transportation cost. The characterization gives rise to a heuristic that finds effective sparse flexibility structures when plants and distribution centers are located on a 2-dimensional plane.

Abstract:
This manuscript explores the application of Conversation Analysis, an empirical approach to the study of naturally occurring everyday interactions, to the field of family therapy process research. Conversation Analysis is claimed to have the potential to benefit family therapy process research by providing evidence of effective therapist-family interactions and producing evidence of in-session change. However, these claims have rarely been substantiated by references to occasions in which this has been the case. This manuscript aims to address these claims in two ways: firstly by reviewing all the literature on family therapy process research that has adopted Conversation Analysis as a methodology of choice; secondly by providing an example of how Conversation Analysis can be used to explore the interactional consequences of a specific therapeutic strategy, psychoeducation, within the context of a feasibility study for a novel family therapy intervention. Finally, this manuscript provides a reflection on future research directions, theoretical developments and the clinical implications of using this methodology, thus providing a comprehensive picture of the application of Conversation Analysis in the field of family therapy process research as well as some evidence of its potential practical utility.

By designing and re-designing biological system, synthetic biology is advancing a wide range of domains from biotherapeutics for fatal cancers to biofuels and artificial meat to improve the global environment and food security. As the scale and complexity of synthetic biology endeavors are increasing, designing automation processes to replace manual labor is becoming more important to improve cost effectiveness, reproducibility, and efficiency including error reduction. Despite the desire for lab automation in the research and industry, in reality, scientists still largely rely on manual techniques in the labs even though the conventional approach becomes unmanageable and slows down their research iterations. One of the key problems is the mental barrier. According to the online survey and interviews conducted in this research, almost 90% of researchers cannot trust the quality of robot's work even though they do not know the actual success rate of the robotics work and what the robot can do. To bridge the gap for making the automation process more accessible, this research is proposing the use of "Bot", a software robot with which people can communicate through the internet and "Internet of things (IoT)". In the system, Bot is connected with the lab automation robots such as liquid handling robots. By communicating with the Bot using user-interfaces such as Slack, researchers can place work orders on lab robots and monitor their order status anytime. Moreover, people can directly ask the Bot for important information and instructions, such as protocol success rate and scheduling.

A large organization that has many projects to manage may want to build a model that gives an overview of the common and variable parts of its projects' processes. This action is process model generalisation. The McGill Software Engineering Laboratory has developed a technique and a tool to achieve that. The work described in this thesis consisted of reengineering the tool to give it a longer life expectancy and to make it part of a future client-server architecture suitable for developing a suite of process management tools. The tool was effectively reengineered and this helped the laboratory define the architecture better. Also, some lessons about software maintenance were learned.

Abstract:
Business processes are performed within a company’s daily business. Thereby, valuable data about the process execution is produced. The quantity and quality of this data is very dependent on the process execution environment that reaches from predominantly manual to fullautomated. Process improvement is one essential cornerstone of business process management to ensure companies’ competitiveness and relies on information about the process execution. Especially in manual process environments data directly related to the process execution is rather sparse and incomplete. In this paper, we present an approach that supports the usage and enrichment of process execution data with context data – data that exists orthogonally to business process data – and knowledge from the corresponding process models to provide a high-quality event base for process intelligence subsuming, among others, process monitoring, process analysis, and process mining. Further, we discuss open issues and challenges that are subject to our future work.

Abstract:
Following the models of the research management theory, modern science approach and priorities of international initiatives and documents concerning higher education the dissertation discusses research management in European universities. The novelty of such analysis is expressed through developed theoretical model for university research management merging elements of the change management theory models, characteristics of modern science and priorities of international initiatives and documents. The model is validated by the method of cases study performed in six European countries – Belgium (Flemish region), Czech Republic, Denmark, the Netherlands, Finland and Germany – and illustrating their practices of university research management. Following the research findings the extended version of the model is provided. The latter defines the cycle of research management in universities. Such a model may be applied as an instrument to set institutional priorities in research management and to define alternatives for their implementation. Discussing applicability of the model in Lithuania the conclusion is made that it may contribute to effective reorganisation of research management in local universities and increase their competitiveness and international visibility.

Šios analizės naujumas pasireiškia apjungiant pokyčių vadybos teorijos modelių elementus, šiuolaikinės mokslo sampratos bruožus ir tarptautinių iniciatyvų bei dokumentų prioritetus į teorinį modelį, skirtą mokslinių tyrimų valdymui. Šis modelis yra tikrinamas pasitelkiant atvejų analizės metodą, apimantį šešių valstybių – Belgijos (Flandrijos regiono), Čekijos, Danijos, Olandijos, Suomijos ir Vokietijos – universitetų mokslinių tyrimų valdymo praktikas. Atsižvelgiant į jas, yra pateikiama išplėstinė modelio versija, nubrėžianti universitetinių mokslinių tyrimų universitete valdymo ciklą. Toks modelis gali būti taikomas kaip instrumentas siekiant apibrėžti mokslinių tyrimų valdymo prioritetus bei numatant alternatyvas jų įgyvendinimui. Diskutuojant šio modelio pritaikomumą Lietuvoje, daroma išvada, kad jo taikymas šalies aukštojo mokslo institucijose galėtų prisidėti prie efektyvaus mokslinių tyrimų valdymo reorganizavimo bei universitetų konkurencingumo ir tarptautinio matomumo.

Biodiesel (Biodiesel,) non-toxic, biodegradable, conventional diesel engines, simply by small changes, or can be used directly. Use of biodiesel over conventional diesel can reduce up to 90% of air pollution. With rapeseed oil in Europe, North America, respectively, of soybean oil, biodiesel production, due to the high cost of raw materials, to reduce taxes to subsidize the special price can not otherwise compete with petroleum diesel. In this study, rapeseed oil, commercial oil with NaOH as catalyst for esterification process base, the total reaction time of 30 minutes will enable the FAME content of 99.9%. The production conditions are mild, and can be industrial way, continuous production, in the manufacturing process time is short, low temperature, less the amount of methanol make biodiesel process more rapid, simple production equipment, time, half as long as the traditional process. To improve the base biodiesel esterification process, dramatically reducing production costs.

Friction sawing is one of the sawing process that uses a very high speed round blade to cut the workpiece.During the sawing process, melting of the workpiece occurred because of the severe friction between cutting blade and the workpiece. This kind of sawing method though can cut the workpiece off very fast, however, very often a very large piece of burr will leave on the cut off face and need further machining to clear it.To solve the problem we need to understand the mechanism of friction sawing. In this study we investigate the effects of blade line speed and feeding speed on the cutting force, examine the photomicrograph of the cut off face. It is found that many grains on the cutting face show there are severe deformation and sometimes even melting during the sawing process. The percentage of the melting is related to the sawing blade line speed and feeding speed.

Abstract:
The quality cost of non-conformance associated with first run production builds is typically more than five times that of later production runs. If a manufacturing organization is to gain market share and increase its profitability, it must explore methods of accelerating its learning curves through defect prevention. Current "Transition to Production" concept methodologies attempt with limited success to accelerate organizational learning through Design for Manufacturability (DFM), design phase dimensional management studies, manufacturing floor statistical methods (SPC, DOE, etc.), and various qualitative strategies. While each of these techniques are effective to some degree in reducing future nonconformances, an integrated, design-phase approach utilizing current technology is needed. "Virtual Process Capability" (VPC) is a methodology for integrating statistical process capability knowledge directly into the hardware design phase, resulting in the improved performance and reduced product costs typically associated with mature product manufacturing. The intent behind the methodology is to realistically simulate the manufacture of hardware products by understanding their underlying model equations and the statistical distributions of each involved contributing parameter. Once each product has been simulated and an expected percentage defective has been estimated, mathematical programming and statistical quality engineering techniques are then utilized for improvement purposes. Data taken from the practical application of this methodology at Raytheon Aircraft has conservatively estimated that for each dollar invested ten are saved. As a technical extension to this developed methodology, statistical insights and methods are provided as to how product and process improvement analysis is best accomplished. Included within this area of discussion is the statistical development and validation of improved measures for the more efficient detection of dispersion and mean effects than that of more traditional methods. Additionally, the use of mathematical programming techniques is creatively employed as an improved mechanism in the optimization of nominal-the-best type problems.

In this thesis, we conducted two process research on the oxygenate productions, namely, dimethyl ether (DME) and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). While DME can be used as a cetane-number booster for diesel, MTBE can be used as an octane-number booster for gasoline. For the DME process, we also unite the pinch technology for heat exchanger network synthesis in order to compare the energy consumptions and capital costs of the process with/without heat integration. As to the MTBE process, we compare the more traditional process, which operates the reactor and the distillation column individually, with the case of reactive distillation -- a combination of the reactor and the distillation column that operates simultaneously. Lastly, we also compare their advantages and disadvantages along with their similarities and dissimilarities from the perspective of process intensification. Two kinds of software were utilized in the research—Aspen Plus and SuperTarget. The former was used for the process synthesis, design, and simulation; the latter was used to carry out the pinch analysis and the synthesis of heat exchanger network.

This project aims to investigate the subjective view of the conflicts between the participants and their parents in the course of opting for a suitable college major. This project uses narrative research methodology (categorical-content) to conduct interviews as well as the analysis of learned material. Presenting how family backgrounds, core values and faith of all three participants play a part in this situation. Finally, how these interactions influence their essence from a psychological prospect, moreover each participant's resolvent in these conditions. Research shows that the upbringing, the course of education, characteristic and family interaction of each interviewee deeply affects how they select their majors. Admittedly, all three interviewees were indecisive between fulfilling their parent’s expectations and their own wishes. The interviewees find themselves in a position, unclear whether to comply with one’s caregiver or follow one’s desire. Doubt and even negative emotions such as setbacks and pain grow out of these dilemmas. As time pass, as the maturate, their aspects towards life start to change. Gradually, they adjust and find the most suitable approach to expressing themselves and communicating with their parents. They no longer one-sidedly abide by the road chosen or given to them. Throughout the process, disagreements force them to reevaluate and reflect upon themselves, giving them the ability to persuade their family to support their opinions open heartedly. Researchers have singled out the significance in each interviewee’s story.chunzi – the spirit of persistence, after the realization of their intended career they go forth unstoppable. Sherry– through the interview they reveal their tenderness and soft side. Even when dealing with conflicts they continue to have an amicable attitude, using time and patience to earn trust eventually recognition. William – the giver, the one who puts family first, the thoughtful one, sacrificing their own needs in exchange for familial harmony. Studies show being loyal and firmly believing in one’s goal will make your visions achievable. No matter how arduous the path may be. Where there is a will there is a way, using proper solutions the problems of choosing the right major and other obstacles will surely be resolved positively. Lastly, the founding of this research will be further discussed, offered to consultation personnel, or any professionals working in the same field for research purposes and reference.

Abstract:
Although multiscale data and models are taken into account to study geography, due to their scale dependence, the scale mismatching may cause adverse results. Thus, scale compatibility is becoming crucial to decode geographic process, especially, for the interactive geographic processes. This thesis focused on scale compatibility in geographic process with a case study of multiscale meteorological and air quality simulation in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region.
Firstly, based on the conceptual definition of scale, this dissertation identifies four groups of scale compatibility in geographic process research: multiple process level, dimension level, type level and component level. By illustrating the different operational levels from the abstract to operational, the author proposes a procedure to implement scale compatibility with potential criteria.
Secondly, scale compatibility in the reproduction of meteorological process is investigated between multiscale digital elevation model (DEM) data and the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF). The experiments show that: DEM data with 3 and 30 arc sec resolutions are relatively more compatible with the WRF model of 1 km resolution to reproduce the meteorological field over Hong Kong; and uncertainty arising from scale mismatching between DEM data and the model may account for 38% of the variance in certain meteorological variables (e.g., temperature). This case study not only helps to improve meteorological simulations by taking the issue of scale compatibility into account, but also explains the significance and implementation of scale compatibility in geographic process research.
Thirdly, this thesis utilizes multiscale meteorological models to study the scale compatibility between dynamic models and interested geographic process. We conduct validation through three steps: daily statistics, spatial comparison and time series. The results support the idea that CALifornia METeorological model (CALMET) is more compatible to reproduce the meteorology process in Hong Kong; however, the discrepancy between the WRF and CALMET is spatially heterogeneous, with larger improvement over the area of complex topography and land use. The results also give evidence about the cross-scale interaction to interpret multi-scale geographic process.
Fourthly, applying the above findings, this dissertation presents a multiscale Virtual Geographic Environments (VGE) system to integrate geographical analysis and multiscale models in a cross-platform and parallel manner. With database system and Linux-Apache-MySQL-Perl (LAMP) architecture, users can manage and retrieve modeling concerning both data and model parameterization to help them reach a consensus on the simulation results and share modeling knowledge. Scale compatibility among data, models and analysis is also considered in the system design. Aided with high-resolved and regulable emission inventory, such multiscale system enables the practical application for various scenarios. As a case study, the VGE is applied to simulate and analyze the SO₂ concentration process and local contribution in HKSAR.
Achievements of this dissertation should greatly contribute to a better cognition of multiscale issues and scale compatibility concerning geographic process, and the VGE is expected to contribute to better understanding and management of air quality for both HKSAR and PRD.

Software processes have been recognized as an important topic since the early days of software engineering. Typically used to define and analyze complex processes, a number of new modeling languages have been invented to enhance the power of process modeling. However, some approaches are too complicated to apply while others are too simple to analyze a complex process. With the popularization of Unified Modeling Language (UML) and its extensibility, this research aimed to develop a UML-based profile as a process modeling language to verify the process design based on Object Constraint Language (OCL) under a process simulation environment. In order to achieve software process improvement, process definition, verification, and validation are of critical importance by means of applying Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), a framework for improving an organization’s process. One of its important elements is quantitative management where process metrics is enclosed in the process definition. However, current process modeling language does not provide the measurement concept directly. Our approach was thus developed to support software process improvement from the following two aspects: a verification approach to examine if an organization’s process can meet the goals defined in CMMI practices and an extension approach to support the measurement modeling. Aside from the critical role of CMMI played in UML-based profile, Personal Software Process (PSP) can be considered as its equivalent on an individual basis. As CMMI can be used to improve the software process in a large context, PSP can be an effective approach for individual use. However, a systematic mechanism to assess and interpret the effect of PSP is invisible in the existing literature. Therefore, an assessment model was also proposed to test against the PSP training effects. Both mean and median approaches along with a set of simplified procedures were used to assess the commonly accepted PSP training effects. A set of statistical analyses were conducted to explore the relationships among the PSP metrics and to interpret possible application results. In summary, in this research a new process modeling approach was proposed to model, analyze, verify and validate an organization''s process. In addition to the basic process elements such as activities, roles, and sequence, the modeling approach also takes CMMI framework and software measurement into consideration. Therefore, the proposed approach is especially suitable for an organization''s process improvement.
