Abstract:
For the problem of serial robot structure error, method of relative position correction was researched. An adaptive filtering correction method based on robot joint position feedback was proposed. The method built a robot joint adaptive filtering corrector (AFC) to correct robot joint feedback. The real spatial position of robot end-effector can be got through the forward kinematics computation with the corrected joint feedback. Thus, the robot structure error is corrected. Weights matrices of AFC were trained with relative positions between calibration points on the standard calibration module. The proposed method of relative positions correction provides a new way for serial robot structure error correction, which does not directly modify the robot kinematics design parameters, dose not need measuring equipment, and can be applied in field. The simulation results got with LabVIEW robot module show that the corrected trajectory of robot end-effector is more approaching to its true trajectory than before, which means the robot structure error is effectively corrected. Keywords: Correction; Relative position; Serial robot; Kinematics

Lundberg, Eric J. "The Automated Laser Position System - ALPS." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44123.

Full text
Abstract:

The construction industry needs an accurate real-time positioning system. Such a system, if successfully implemented, would lead to significant increases in the performance of many construction operations. This thesis presents the Automated Laser Position System (ALPS) for accurate real-time positioning. ALPS is a spin-off of the Automated Position And Control System (APAC) research, sponsored by the National Science Foundation under grant DMC-8717476.

The ALPS concept has three primary components: a rotation laser, laser detectors and a central processing unit. ALPS generates both horizontal (X,Y) and vertical (Z) position information. It is mathematically predicted that ALPS could produce accuracies of ± 17 mm in the horizontal and ± 5,9 mm in the vertical, at a range of 400 m. Position measurements would be updated 50 times a second.

Feuerstein, Martin J. "Performance evaluation of a spread spectrum local area position location system." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39073.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary objective of this research was the investigation of position location technologies suitable for use in construction automation applications. Ground based radio frequency spread spectrum techniques were chosen due to their relatively low cost, ease of implementation, and all weather capability. Two types of spectral spreading were examined: frequency hopping and direct sequence. The error performance capabilities of spread spectrum position location systems were studied systematically through theoretical analysis, a series of experimental tests, and by the development of a computer simulation package. A small scale experimental test was conducted as a proof of concept and a test of the prototype hardware. The small scale test was also used to estimate parameters of the computer simulation program. Later, a full scale test was conducted at a site approximately the size of a typical construction project. Computer simulations of the system performance were found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. The position error performance of a frequency hopping phase Ineasurenlent type position location system was determined using theoretical, simulation, and experimental means. The primary limitation to position accuracy was found to be propagation channel induced errors. By employing nonlinear filtering methods combined with robust estimation techniques, position error distributions which exceed the performance of classic least squared error methods have been achieved. The relationship between vertical and horizontal errors for practical systems has been determined. Computer simulations have provided estimates of the position accuracy of a direct sequence system which combines time domain techniques for ambiguity resolution determination and phase measurement for fine position. For the first time, phase error distributions of hyperbolic multilateration systems in multipath environments have been studied. The computer simulation tools which have been developed and verified experimentally can be used to analyze the performance of future radio position location systems.

Abstract:
Sinkholes are hazardous to buildings and their occupants, so a sensing device that can monitor underground changes is vital. Void Technology, developed in the Research and Development Center at Western Kentucky University, is creating a device that can improve monitoring for any movement underground. This device, created by Void Technology, is equipped with ESP8266, which is a Wi-Fi module that can send its information to the router in a wireless network. The focus of this thesis is on designing and developing an IOS framework application to show the signal strength capabilities in different buildings to find the optimum placement of the Void Technology devices. Each building, based on various construction materials, had different attenuations that could cause signal loss from the application to the ESP82266. The optimum place was found with this designed application. From this test experiment, it can be concluded that the application can show the signal strength based dBm. Thus, this new application is cost-effective as well as user friendly and which can help both the installer and homeowner to find the best position for installing The Void Technology with optimum signal strength.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 27-30, 1997 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada
There is an interest in using Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers to find: Time Space Position Information (TSPI), miss distances between a missile and target, and using the data real time as an independent tracking aid for range safety. Ashtech, Inc. has several standalone GPS receivers they believe can work at high g levels. This paper investigates how the Ashtech GPS receivers work under high g loading in one axis. The telemetry system used to collect data from the receivers and the reconstruction of the data will also be discussed. The test was done at SNORT (Supersonic Naval Ordnance Research Track) located at NAWS, China Lake, CA. The g level obtained was about +23 g’s with a deceleration of -15 g’s. The velocity reached was about Mach 2.0. A summary of the errors is included.

Thesis, Mälardalens högskola, Akademin för innovation, design och teknik, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mdh:diva-55146.

Abstract:
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women, this type of cancer is diagnosed in around 9000 women every year in Sweden. The most common studies to find breast cancer is through mammography where the breast tissue is compressed and exposed by radiation. Not only does the technique expose the breast tissue for radiation, but it can also be very uncomfortable. There is research on a new kind of scanning where use of microwaves reduces the uncomfortable situation. The MDH research team that are working with this technology needs help to position a transmitter of microwaves to test their equipment. The purpose of this paper is to discover a way to mechanically position a transmitter so that it can be moved along a breast model. The investigation will be made through a product development process in order to review the research question: RQ: “How can a product be designed to position and adjust a microwave transmitter to various locations in order to help testing of cancer research equipment?” By using an agile working methodology in combination with a Design thinking process this thesis includes several sprints that involved continues improvement and feedback from the research team. The first sprint was mostly to discover and experiment on new design ideas as well as control if any of them could work. It resulted in need of measurement changes and redesigning. The second sprint involved measurement corrections. The model itself had the reasonable measurements and the functions worked as expected. However, some of the functions needed to be improved as well as a problem with clearing of the wires to the transmitter itself. The third sprint included changes where more freedom was given and more clearance was made for the wires, but this design turned out to be unpredictable. The fourth sprint included a completely new design to stabilizing the prototype as a result from the researchers’ feedback. To answer the research question, the final design resulted in a 3D printed stand designed to move the transmitter along x-axis as well as rotate around y-axis to adjust to different breast diameters and forms. The stand also includes a rack and pinion design that makes it possible to adjust to different breast lengths. Lastly, the stand makes it possible to gradually move the transmitter around the breast model. However, the final design does not only answer the research question it also fulfils stability and functionality requirements set by the research team. This clarifies why the first iterations needed redesigning. Therefore, the stand is ready for preliminary tests of the researcher’s equipment. To conclude, there are many different design solutions that can answer the research question. However, the design requires stability which reduce the number of design solutions.

Abstract:
Child Health Services (CHS) in Sweden are offered free of charge to all Swedish parents with children 0-5 years of age.  The regular service schedule includes home visits, health examinations, vaccinations and participation in parenting groups. The CHS should pay extra attention to disadvantaged families. The aim of this thesis was to investigate to what extent the CHS reaches groups of families with special needs, e.g. immigrant families, low income families, young and single mothers, with universal or selective measures, as well as to investigate the variation of two determinants of child health, second hand smoke and breastfeeding, in these groups of families. The thesis also aimed at investigating validity of data in the county CHS quality database (Basta). The thesis is based on data from Basta together with several national registers. The CHS equally reached all families with infants with the universal program except for participation in parenting group. Foreign born, young, single and low-income mothers had lower participation rates. Smoking rates were lower in foreign-born than in Swedish-born mothers and higher for foreign-born than in Swedish-born fathers. Smoking was more common among single and low income parents and young mothers. Young and single mothers had lower breastfeeding rates at 6 months. At 12 months the breastfeeding rates were higher among foreign-born mothers. The validity test of data in the Basta database showed sensitivity values for immunizations, breastfeeding and smoking at 90-100 % and for any home visit, participation in parenting group at any time, a minimum number of 6 visits at the Child Health Centre (CHC) and a minimum number of 11 visits at the CHC at 88 - 96 %. The sensitivity value for the exact match of number of CHC visits (+/- 3 visits) was 88 %. Conclusions: The universal programme was equally distributed in different immigrant and socio-demographic populations. However, the results did not indicate equality according to the assumption that some families need more input than others in order to achieve equity of outcome. Individual data routinely collected from CHS records to a quality database provides data of good quality that can be used for both quality surveillance and research.

Abstract:
ITC/USA 2007 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Third Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 22-25, 2007 / Riviera Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada
The Joint Advanced Missile Instrumentation (JAMI) Program’s main thrust has been the integration of Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking technology into the Department of Defense (DoD) Missile Test Ranges. This technology could be used for Time, Space, Position, and Information (TSPI), Flight Termination (FTS), or End Game Scoring purposes. However the Program’s main goal is to develop Proof-of-Concept components only. Transitioning Missile technology developed by the Government to Private Industry, so that it can be economically mass produced, has been quite a challenge. Traditionally, private industry has had to bid on proposals without much detailed information on how these components have been designed and fabricated. These unknown risks, Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) and Missile Flight Qualification costs, routinely have significantly increased the price of these procurement contracts. In order so that the Fleet can economically utilize these components in the field, Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADA) between the Government and Private Industry have been used to successfully transition Government developed technology to mass production. They can eliminate the NRE and flight qualification costs to provide for an economical and low risk method of providing the Fleet with the latest advances in GPS Tracking Technology. This paper will discuss how this is currently being accomplished in the development of a conformal wraparound instrumentation antenna for a five-inch diameter Missile Telemetry (TM) Section.

Abstract:
Inclusive growth requires high levels of trust, both among individuals and in institutions, and trust is shaped by a variety of factors, including the distribution of income and wealth. This is problematic when that distribution is not perceived as legitimate. Latin America and the Caribbean has traditionally been a highly unequal region. Inequality might be associated with lower trust because it reflects an unequal distribution of power, as those at the top can use the states coercive power to benefit themselves at the expense of others. Inequality nonetheless tends to be wrongly estimated, as most people do not accurately estimate their countrys income and wealth distribution, or their position within.

Melnyk, Olesia. MEDIA DISCOURSE AROUND THE FIGURE OF ORIANA FALLACHI AND HER JOURNALISM DURING 2017–2020. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.50.11114.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the media discourse around the figure of Oriana Fallachi and her journalistic work during 2017-2020. The actual media image of the figure of Fallachi is highlighted, examples of positive and negative statements are given. It is substantiated why her journalism should be researched in various ways, taking into account other aspects of her work that are not related to Islamophobia. The subject of the study is critical texts in modern foreign media dedicated to the author’s work. The objective of the study is to outline the media discourse around the figure of Oriana Fallaci and her journalism during 2017-2020. The methodology. The following methods have been used in the process of scientific research: historical, comparative, systems analysis, content synthesis, and others. The main results. In total, we have analyzed eight materials in foreign publications, published over the past 3 years, as well as the two most famous biographies of Oriana Fallaci. Some of the most recent reviewed texts have been published in the last few months, reflecting the interest in the author’s journalism, her writing, and reporting. Therefore, we see the need for further tracking and analysis of this body of texts. Conclusions. Critics of Fallaci express polar views that are not all negative. Authors recommend quite cautiously her texts for reading, emphasizing their positive aspects. Both Fallaci’s biographies are also not entirely complementary: some aspects of her work are glorified, others are condemned. We managed to find general tendencies in the criticism of Oriana Fallaci’s journalism. These include accusations of xenophobia and Islamophobia, uncompromisingness, lack of political correctness, and moral value. The authors emphasize, at the same time, the openness and directness that bribe the reader, patriotism and honesty, strength of spirit and firmness of position. Significance of the research. The analysis of the latest criticism reveals what kind of media image Fallachi’s figure has today, and gives the possibility to research it for demonization and one-sided coverage. This is important not only for thorough research of the author’s work but also for understanding how the modern world perceives journalism, which is contrary to the generally accepted principles of political correctness, journalistic ethics, and humanity.

Baek, Carolyn, and Naomi Rutenberg. Addressing the family planning needs of HIV-positive PMTCT clients: Baseline findings from an operations research study. Population Council, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/hiv14.1000.

Full text
Abstract:
Preventing unintended pregnancy among HIV-positive women is an effective approach to reducing pediatric HIV infection and vital to meeting HIV-positive women’s sexual and reproductive health needs. Although contraceptive services for HIV-positive women is one of the cornerstones of a comprehensive program for prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT), a review of PMTCT programs found that implementers have not prioritized family planning (FP). While there is increasing awareness about the importance of FP and HIV integration, data about FP from PMTCT clients are lacking. The Horizons Program is conducting an operations research study testing several community-based strategies to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV in a densely settled urban slum in Nairobi, Kenya. Strategies being piloted include moving PMTCT services closer to the population via a mobile clinic and increasing psychosocial support for HIV-positive women. This research update presents key findings about FP at PMTCT sites, including the interaction between providers and clients as well as HIV-positive women’s fertility desires and demand for contraceptives, from the baseline cross-sectional survey and qualitative interviews with postpartum women.

Alessandro, Martín, Bruno Cardinale Lagomarsino, Carlos Scartascini, and Jerónimo Torrealday. Research Insights: How Can Governments Build Trust? Inter-American Development Bank, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003028.

Abstract:
Feedback on government performance can affect how much citizens trust government. The City of Buenos Aires ran an experiment testing different framings of government performance and their impact on citizens perceptions of institutional trust. Government perceptions were not changed by a language of empathy nor efficiency in communications, but trust was increased by providing positive feedback. The effect of communications had a significantly smaller impact on those already familiar with performance information, suggesting that providing information can have a long-lasting effect on citizens perceptions of government efficiency.

Álvarez Marinelli, Horacio, Samuel Berlinski, and Matías Busso. Research Insights: Can Struggling Primary School Readers Improve Their Reading through Targeted Remedial Interventions? Inter-American Development Bank, November 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0002863.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper assesses the effectiveness of an intervention aimed at improving the reading skills of struggling third-grade students in Colombia. In a series of randomized experiments, students participated in remedial tutorials conducted in small groups during school hours. Trained instructors used structured pedagogical materials that can be easily scaled up. Informed by the outcomes of each cohort, the intervention tools are fine-tuned for each subsequent cohort. The paper finds positive and persistent impacts on literacy scores and positive spillovers on some mathematics scores. The effectiveness of the program grew over time, likely because of higher dosage and the fine-tuning of materials.
