Abstract:
Reviewing the literature is an important undertaking in any research project; indeed research and thinking communicated by others through publication, play many roles in contemplated or ongoing research endeavours. This thesis describes a phenomenographic study into research students' conceptions of a literature review. Thus the literature review is here examined from a 'secondorder' perspective. The driving questions behind the study being : What do student researchers understand by a literature review? What does a literature review mean to them? How do they experience it? What are the relations that exist between these students and a literature review? The initial impetus for the study was varied and sometimes disconcerting insights into students' understanding of this aspect of the research process. These insights were gained within the context of literature searching classes for students working on research proposals or literature reviews. Subsequent investigation revealed that those writing about the literature review for new researchers approach it with varying perspectives and priorities. It seemed reasonable, therefore, to expect that differing conceptions may underlie students' approaches to this aspect of their research. To elicit qualitatively different conceptions of a literature review, forty-one research students, all in their first year of study, were asked to respond in writing to two questions: 'What do you mean by a literature review?' and 'What is the meaning of a literature review for your research?'. Students' written responses to these questions were then subjected to a phenomenographic analysis. From the responses, six categories of description denoting students' conceptions of a literature review were derived: literature review as a list, literature review as a search, literature review as a survey, literature review as a vehicle for learning, literature review as a research facilitator and literature review as a report. Both structural and referential aspects were considered in formulating the conceptions. Therefore, the logical relations between the categories are described through an 'outcome space'. The six categories of description were checked for inter-rater reliability by a co-judge. A pre-consultation inter-rater reliability rate of 85. 3 % was obtained. The six categories of description and the outcome space representing the logical relations between them constitute the main outcomes of the research. 'Intraindividual variation' was discovered to be a major feature of students' responses. On the basis of qualitatively different ways of conceiving the literature review discovered, the implications for teaching and learning this aspect of the research process are discussed. The three major stakeholders in the process: research students, supervisors and academic librarians are all considered. Finally some recommendations for future research are made.

The significant changes to the political landscape of South Africa since the abolition of apartheid and the implementation of democracy have had far-reaching effects in social order and gender relations. With the new dispensation has come the promise of new opportunities for men and women of all races to participate fully in the creation of a multicultural society, making the issue of transformation an important agenda. As a social artifact, children's literature has also been influenced by these changes, and the didactic function of this medium make it an interesting site to explore the ways in which historical stereotypes are both perpetuated and challenged. This study focused on the representation of black masculinity in a sample of South African children's literature published after apartheid. The aim was to investigate how race, gender, and class intersect in the representation of black masculinity.

The domains of Business Intelligence (BI) and social media have meanwhile become significant research fields. While BI aims at supporting an organization’s decisions by providing relevant analytical data, social media is an emerging source of personal and individual knowledge, opinion, and attitudes of stakeholders. For a while, a convergence of the two domains can be observed in real-world implementations and research, resulting in concepts like social BI. Many research questions still remain open – or even worse – are not yet formulated. Therefore, the paper aims at articulating a research agenda for social BI. By means of a literature review we systematically explored previous work and developed a framework. It contrasts social media characteristics with BI design areas and is used to derive the social BI research agenda. Our results show that the integration of social media (data) into a BI system has impact on almost all BI design objects.

Eberdt, Karen. "Research conceptions of adult and college reader response to literature." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/32275.

Full text
Abstract:
"Response to literature" is an educational notion which generally refers to an oral or written reaction to a non-expository published work such as a short story or poem. This historical analysis investigates conceptions of response to literature in research with adults and college students. The dissertation problem derives from an apparent shift in emphasis from the text towards the reader in research on response to literature (Purves, 1985). The underlying assumption of this suggestion is that there are historically predominant research conceptions. This dissertation documents these ideas with adult and college readers' responses to literature. The procedure was first to establish foundation conceptions of "response" and "literature" from theoretical considerations of these terms. Next, studies derived from major bibliographies were examined in order to determine the general emphasis based on the research purpose, literary work, and response task. Predominant research conceptions of both "response" and "literature" were delineated by decades, from the first cited study in 1912. Results of the analysis concerned conceptions of both "literature" and "response". First, research conceptions of "literature" generally focused on print, rather than oral performance. In addition, there was a general research move from the use of meaningless syllables and fragments of poetry (1910-39); through the use of a diversity of genres such as newspaper articles, comprehension test items, and novels (1940-69); to a contemporary focus on short stories and poems (1970-89). Second, research conceptions of "response" supported the suggestion of a general shift from conceptions which focused on textual elements such as rhythm, sounds of language and literary merit (1920-39); through those which focused on aspects of the reader such as personality changes, preferences and developmental differences (1940-69) ; to those which emphasized elements of response itself such as process, stance, and context (1970-89). Possible reasons for the shifts in emphasis were explored in relation to general societal conditions and the changing image of the college student. From an educational perspective, the observed changes suggest a move towards empowerment of the learner in the classroom. This trend corresponds to the increasing pedagogical emphasis on holism and collaboration

Bennetts, Alison Chantal. "Experimental investigations of paranoia : a literature review and novel research." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2017. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/417890/.

Full text
Abstract:
Paranoid experience across the population has been of increasing interest to psychological researchers in recent years. Paranoia is no longer considered a purely psychiatric phenomenon, with numerous studies demonstrating delusional ideation in non-clinical populations. Theoretical models implicate emotions and beliefs as contributory factors in the most severe form of paranoia; persecutory delusions. Chapter one investigates the contribution of experimental studies investigating anxiety and paranoia to the understanding of the theoretical models of paranoid experience. Using a systematic search strategy and narrative synthesis, the review found extensive variance in design and methodology. Whilst there is some evidence of manipulations impacting paranoia and anxiety, the literature is limited by small samples, lack of replication and weak quality ratings. Further sufficiently powered replication studies and employment of mediational and covariate analyses are required to understand the causal relationships between theoretically relevant variables. Chapter two presents an experimental investigation into the effect of mental imagery on variables relevant to models of paranoid experience. Large, significant effect sizes were found, although some analyses were underpowered. These results offer tentative support for the impact of mental imagery on factors theorised to be relevant to the experience of paranoid ideation. Theoretical, research and clinical implications are discussed.

Arntzen, Jenny. "Mentoring and information and communication technologies (ICT) in teacher education : synthesizing research literature and research practice." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31620.

Full text
Abstract:
Concerns persist regarding the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in education. How are teacher education programs providing for mentoring teacher candidates to use ICT? A review of literature shows that both instructors and teacher candidates need multiple forms of support to build ICT literacy. ICT literacy makes it possible for participants to build ICT fluency, which in turn makes ICT integration possible. It is possible mentoring could be part of a support strategy to make the transition from ICT under-use to ICT literacy. Mentoring is not easy to define. My purpose of engaging in this research was to investigate the phenomena of mentoring. I wanted to learn what needed to be considered when constructing a definition of mentoring. Through the process of this research I have developed a proposal for a mentoring program to support the acquisition of ICT literacy, toward building fluency and integration in teacher education. I used a dialogic process to systematically synthesize mentoring research literature data and experiential mentoring data to construct this proposal. The experiential data reported in this qualitative study was collected over two academic years 2005 - 2007 from a two-year elementary teacher education program. In the process of doing the research I developed theoretical perspectives to help me understand my experience. I learned that: 1) a universal definition of mentoring is not useful; 2) mentoring is a highly adaptable social learning phenomenon; 3) mentoring can support ICT use in educational contexts; and 4) there are specific institutional policies, programs, and curricula that can positively affect the success of a mentoring program. In the conclusion, I propose that an operational definition of mentoring should be based on foundational principles and values, well supported by the organization or institution. I further propose that an operational definition should be designed in response to situated, emergent, and authentic conditions.

Rozenberga, Dace. "The impact of Latvian exile literature on research in Latvia (1992-2006)." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2011. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/8319.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the impact that Latvian exile literature has had on research in Latvia between 1992 and 2006. Latvian exile literature refers to the publications that were authored and published by Latvians who emigrated to Western countries after World War II and were issued between 1945 and 1991. Mixed methods research was conducted, incorporating citation analysis, questionnaires and interviews. Nine subject fields from the social sciences, arts and humanities were examined: philosophy and psychology, religion and theology, political science, education, folklore and ethnography, the arts, linguistics, literature, history. For the citation analysis, 33,866 citations from 1241 publications were collected. In the survey, 79 questionnaires were received from Latvian researchers and 31 questionnaires from the librarians working in Latvian academic, special and the main regional libraries. After the data analyses of citations and questionnaires were conducted, the results were presented to 15 researchers in Latvia (experts in their subject fields) for their assessment and comments. The overall results show that Latvian exile literature has had the greatest impact on research in folklore, history and literature. Exile impact was observed through both exile publications and communication with exile people. It appears that in other disciplines exile literature has had little or no impact. The reasons for this are thought to be: the lack of exile publications that could make an impact, and the irrelevance of existing publications to research in Latvia. In general, exile academic publications have been the most influential on research. The citation results also demonstrate the impact that restrictions of the soviet period (1945-1991) had on the research in Latvia, particularly through the double obsolescence of citations in all subject fields.

The Sixteen Kingdoms Period had not a few of literature left till now, even if there are, they were segmental sentences without intact anymore. Among all words left from the Sixteen Kingdoms Period, Fu Lang's "Fu Zi" is one of them. The reason why "Fu Zi" is left till now is partially because some of its chapters are included in the books like "Notes in North Hall ", "Group of Artwork", "Emperor’s Review in Taiping"; with the spread of these series of books, plus thanks to the effort made by unknown authors in the Qing Dynasty, "Fu Zi" was edited into a book anew and the "Fu Zi" was able to maintain in the book form now. This paper is divided into eight chapters to research of literature related issues as to Fu Lang and "Fu Zi". Chapter One, "Introduction": It depicts Research Motivation and Objectives, plus the scope of the study and methods; Chapter Two, "The record history of "Fu Zi "and edition by unknown descendants": It sorts out ancient historical records, and discusses the result of unknown editors in the Qing Dynasty; Chapter Three, "Fu Lang’s biography and background of "Fu Zi"": It analyzed and discussed the milestone of Fu Lang and his birth and death, mastering his identity and the background of "Fu Zi" from the time & environment concept; Chapter Four, "The materials and content of "Fu Zi"": It categorized the content among fifty-two chapters of "Fu Zi" into several types, and depicts it in details; Chapter Five: " The rhetorical features of "Fu Zi"": It reads "Fu Zi" from the perspective of rhetorics, and among these rhetoric languages, we can see that with the purposes of reaching his chapters into a specific effect, it had a proper use of rhetorical approach to intensify the persuasiveness; Chapter Six, "The article style of "Fu Zi"": It categorized the chapters of "Fu Zi" into four styles, and we may discover from such four styles that among some fable types of chapters herein, it may use a particular way to write to form its special style; Chapter Seven: "The literary value of "Fu Zi"": Since "Fu Zi" is composed as a book, it raised little attention, however, we may find out from the historic versions and studies made by the author that in addition to its be proclaimed to be the best among literature in the Sixteen Kingdoms of Five Ethnic Groups, we may view this book from the viewing angle of Zhuang Zi science from the writing style; Chapter Eight, "Conclusion": concluded from the paper herein, it depicts the feature and value of "Fu Zi" Literature, and elaborates the vision of studies related with "Fu Zi".

Regarding the lack of studies that have conducted an integrative literature review on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), this thesis aims to present a literature review and classification framework for RFID research. 636 papers were collected from the years 1989 to 2006, from the largest online abstract and indexing database, Scopus. Among the papers identified, 326 articles are from 191 journals and 310 articles are from 162 conference proceedings. By analyzing the collected literature, this study undertook four kinds of distribution analysis: the distribution of articles by year of publication, country and source titles (from journals and conference proceedings) and subject headings derived from the classification framework. The research findings are as follows: 1. The RFID literature is grouped into five essential categories: General Discussions, Social Issues, Technological Issues, Managerial Issues and RFID Applications. These were further divided into 29 subcategories. 2. According to the distribution of articles by year of publication, there were significantly deficient research outputs before 2003, but there was a sudden increase of academic papers published from 2003 to 2004, indicating that RFID research began to flourish in 2003. 3. With regard to the distribution of articles by country, an interesting finding shows that 37 countries have become involved in RFID research, with the United States ranked first in number of published articles, South Korea ranked second, and Japan ranked third. 4. The distribution of articles by classification framework proposed in this study indicates that Technological Issues is the most popular research field; RFID Applications ranked second; General Discussion ranked third; Managerial Issues ranked fourth and Social Issues ranked last. 5. As for the distribution of articles by journal titles, Electronics Letters, Material Handling Management, and Microwave and Optical Technology Letters were the three journals that published the most papers related to RFID. 6. Regarding the article distribution by conference proceeding titles, Lecture Notes in Computer Science had the most articles published. Second was The Proceedings of SPIE – the International Society for Optical Engineering, which has continuously published RFID articles since 1997.

This research paper aims to explore the “proletarian literature in “Japanese proletarian literature” which takes place in the early 20th century. In addition to examining the initial ideals of “justice” and “social equality,” it also attempts by means of sorting and discourse/ statement to plow through this left-wing literature, field, which is still desolate among local researches of Japanese literature yet influential to Taiwanese literature in the period under Japanese occupation.

From the view of a Japanese literature researcher whose mother tongue is Chinese, it further examines why the results of Japanese proletarian literature and Japanese Communist Party, which teem with left-wing enthusiasm, may differ greatly from those of Taiwanese literature in the period under Japanese occupation, which incorporates the idea of “labor and social rank” into the idea of “confrontation between nationality and colonization,” and from those of the left-wing literature in China, acclaimed as “revolutionary literature” by China Communist Party, which perfectly connects itself with the race-saving feelings and thus succeeds. By surveying the factors among them, this paper aims to clarify what role the Japanese proletarian literature plays in modern and contemporary literature in Japan.

Starting with the introduction of the origin of the left wing in the West, Chapter 1 leads to explore the political, social and literary circles in Japanese modernization period, and progresses to how the proletarian literature rose and what role it played then. It also sums up so far the researches and opinions on this domain in Japanese literary circle/ in Japanese academies, classifying and analyzing the themes of related papers existent/ available in the National Institute of Japanese literature.

Chapter 2, focusing on “main part/ subjectivity,” is mainly based on the rising, varying, and the gathering and publications among intellectuals in the whole literary movement so as to present the outline/ framework of the history of proletarian literature movement in Japan.

Chapter 3, focusing on “Body/ Flesh,” entering and investigating each notable period in this literary movement, attempts to present the internal atmosphere of the proletarian literature by translating, quoting and text-analyzing the important works and writers.

Chapter 4 focusing on “Limbs,” entering and investigating each notable period in this literary movement, attempts to reveal how the political movement and literary productions are linked, how the literary ideas are presented and how the literary critiques towards the production are conducted inside the proletarian literature by translating, quoting and text-analyzing the important literary critiques and critics

Chapter 5 examines by translating, quoting and text-analyzing the surviving works, critiques and self-reflections on the past in the so-called “turning era” when the left-wing groups were destructed by the Emperor government.

Chapter 6 summarizes all the points mentioned in previous chapters and collects various evidence on the Japanese society other than literature; in addition to the opinions of previous studies that the proletarian literature dies out due to both being oppressed mercilessly by the fascistic Emperor government and being ideologically inconsistent among the sects inside the Communist Party, this paper aspires to add that it is its insistence on the genuine left wing course and denial to the prevalent values of exploitation in disguise of feudalism among all ranks in Japanese society that void its echoing with the mass and thus demolish this literary movement which has never appeared since the war.

According to Technorati’s [44] 2007 report, the blog sites is up rising to 72 millions and the popularity of bloggers has drawn many attention. This phenomenon has turned many web users into bloggers. The vast amount of blog information also brings the phenomenon of information overloading which is not handled by the blog function yet. In addition, the personalized recommendation service, which should be provided, is also not incorporated in the blog function now. To better service the bloggers and to overcome the above problems, this research proposes a Blog Article Recommendation System (BARS) which provides personalized article recommendation based on blogger’s preference. This research adopts the ontology technique in BARS to construct a personal preference tree for recording blogger’s interests and for further inference. The ART (Adaptive Resonance Theory) network is also utilized to cluster the group of similar interests. In order to find the similar preference between target blogger and the corresponding neighbors, this research applies the Collaborative Filtering (CF) technique to generate the recommendation. The “cold-start” problem, i.e. lacking of blogger’s usage data at the very beginning, is handled by integrating ontology and Content-Based (CB) filtering method to infer the potential preference in BARS. The purpose of this research is to achieve the followings. (1) To solve the problem of information overloading. (2) To handle the cold-start problem when making the recommendation. (3) To implement BARS for fulfilling the personalized blog-article recommendation. (4) To act as the pioneer for providing recommendation service in blog’s research. To demonstrate the proposed method, this research has implemented the BARS as an academic blog for real-world experiment. Experiments are done by collecting real bloggers’ usage and their feedbacks so that the recommendation correctness is verified. Three types of recommendation approach are proposed and compared with the traditional Non-personalized recommendation list (NPRL), these three types of approach are BRL (Browser Based Recommendation List), SCRL (Spread Category Recommendation List), and CRL (Cluster Based Recommendation List) method. The experiment shows that BRL produces better recommendation result than SCRL and CRL with 84% satisfaction by all the bloggers.

Based on a major chapter of the book entitled as “Complete Works of the Chinese Folktales” (1993), edited by Ching-Hau Chen and Chui-Gui Wang, the author tries to find out all related volumes and potential denotations of taboo-topic Taiwanese folktales. Moreover, the author utilizes the analytical framework of Chen-Chung Wong’s “Interpreting Taboos,” including ‘Interior Taboo Topics,’ ‘Exterior Taboo Topics,’ ‘Complete-Style Interior Taboo Topics,’ and ‘Non-Complete-Style Interior Taboo Topics.’ To inquire into and examine focused academic materials, the author ends this thesis with research findings and pragmatic teaching suggestions. This research has three primary research aims. The first is to synthesize and differentiate some of the many taboo cultural differences of the local Han people and the Taiwanese aboriginals. The second is to provide a framework to organize those role characteristics of people, objects, and things and other matters in the Taiwanese folk literature. The third is to present varied taboo folktales and what ought to guide and classify taboo topic meanings. Research conclusions are as follows. First of all, most of taboo stories of the Taiwanese aboriginals are related to mythology and local customs and practices, whereas taboo stories of Han people mainly relate to historic and legendary personage and figures. And thus the former taboo stories are more colorful and fantastic than those of the latter. Secondly, the image of human beings is the most pluralistic and capricious among characteristics of roles played in taboo folktales. Lastly, through lively taboo topic folktales, serious and mysterious taboo personage, objects, and substances emerge from dichotomous plots of folktales corresponding to social expectation.
