Abstract:
This article examines ideologies and beliefs about poverty. In 1981, Kluegel and Smith provided the first comprehensive summary and critique of scholarly research on beliefs about social stratification. Focusing primarily on the United States and Great Britain, they reviewed research on public beliefs in three primary areas: opportunity, the distributive process, and social class. In so doing, they identified four key questions that continue to define research in this area: What is believed about social inequality? What principles organize thought around social inequality? What determines what is believed? What are the consequences of these beliefs? This article considers what Americans (and to a lesser extent, the British) perceive and believe about social inequality; the nature of ideologies and other social psychological processes governing the intrapersonal organization of beliefs; selected factors that shape patterns of belief; and selected consequences that stratification beliefs hold for the person and for politics.

Abstract:
This chapter examines individual-level factors that may influence legitimacy beliefs towards global governance institutions. The chapter surveys the full breadth of existing political science research in order to chart a forward course for empirical studies of individual-level sources of legitimacy beliefs. The chapter’s threefold core argument maintains, first, that global governance scholarship needs to build on previous insights on legitimacy beliefs from comparative politics and social psychology. Second, research on beliefs in the legitimacy of global governance institutions needs to look comparatively across countries, institutions, issue areas, social groups, and time. Third, future research on sources of legitimacy in global governance can acquire better measures through the use of large-scale surveys and survey experiments.

Abstract:
Many have referred to practices in deaf education as having their basis in beliefs and attitudes rather than evidence and science; misunderstandings between the culture of the researcher and the culture of the practitioner result in misperceptions of the intentions from both sides. The purpose of this chapter is to identify how a good idea makes it from a belief in a practice to scientific validation of its effectiveness. The available research designs are legion, and all have their purposes. This chapter describes the place of the different designs on the path from a belief to an evidence-based practice and uses examples from the existing evidence base to demonstrate how they fit in the overall scheme of moving a good idea into the evidence base.
