Abstract:
This is the sixth volume of a ten-volume series on The Natural History of the Crustacea. The volume synthesizes in nineteen chapters our current understanding of diverse topics in crustacean reproductive biology. The first part of the volume address allocation strategies to reproduction, gamete production, brooding behavior and other components of parental care in crustaceans. The second part of the volume centers on sexual systems in crustaceans. The third section of the volume covers crustacean mating systems and sexual selection. The volume ends with three chapters covering diverse topics including reproductive rhythms, and crustacean personality research, and record breaking crustaceans with respect to reproductive characters. Collectively, these nineteen chapters provide an integrative and comprehensive treatment of crustacean reproductive biology from gamete formation to mating and reproductive strategies and their evolutionary and ecological consequences.

Abstract:
Examining how issues are framed in policy discourse illuminates the structure of ethical arguments and the social and political context within which these arguments are made. In the United States, reproductive discourse and policymaking display four contours. First, deemed a legitimate topic for government intervention, reproduction policy has most often been gendered and group-specific. Second, the issue category into which reproduction is placed is a critical factor in policy intervention: Is reproduction a matter of health, gender equality, or religious liberty? Third, in reproductive policymaking, abortion has taken on the role of master subissue, shaping approaches to reproductive issues and in some cases standing in for the larger range of reproductive matters. Finally, lack of understanding of the medical and technological factors related to reproduction among policymakers and the public makes policymaking difficult and augments abortion’s discursive power.

Solinger, Rickie. Reproductive Politics. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/wentk/9780199811403.001.0001.

Abstract:
Reproductive politics is a term coined by feminists in the 1970s to describe contemporary, Roe v. Wade-era power struggles over contraception and abortion, adoption and surrogacy, and other satellite issues. Forty years later, questions of reproductive rights are just as complex--and controversial--as they were then. Focusing mainly on the United States, Reproductive Politics explores the legal, political, religious, social, ethical, and medical dimensions of this hotly contested arena. Tracing the historical roots of reproductive politics up through the present, Rickie Solinger adopts a question-and-answer format to shed light on such questions as: are sex and reproduction “private” or “public” matters? When was abortion criminalized in the United States--and why? What is “abstinence only” sex education? And how is “reproductive politics” a men’s issue as well as a women’s issue? Covering a substantial range of information in an accessible and lively manner, Solinger orients readers and provides the knowledge necessary to enter into dialogue with this important and continually evolving field.

Abstract:
The diversity of beliefs and perspectives concerning reproduction make it a complex experience with economic, social, religious, and cultural layers. This essay presents childlessness in the context of a matrilineal culture; the Ashanti culture of Ghana, West Africa. The other culture under comparative consideration is ancient Hebrew culture, as depicted within the Hebrew Bible. This essay proposes that in ancient contexts, and even in current traditional non-Western cultures, reproduction is primarily the rite of passage for women, and that the notion of women’s reproductive rights is chiefly a construct of modern-day Western culture(s). For many ancient and contemporary cultures reproduction is conceived as the rite of passage and not in terms of reproductive rights. I propose an original term that verbally and visually underscores the centrality of the womb to a woman’s identity in the aforementioned cultures; ‘wom(b)an’.
