Abstract:
The introduction identifies the “other revolutions”—the sexual revolution, the socialist revolution, and the ‘free theater’ revolution—that came together in London in the 1890s as the first wave of modern Irish playwrights sought to prove themselves on the London stage. The introduction also explains and justifies the book’s theoretical paradigm and methodologies, arguing for the importance of reading social politics and sexual politics together. It identifies some of the limitations of the “global turn” and its dependence on evolutionary and market-theory based conceptions of “world literature,” arguing that these paradigms obscure the existence of the intentionally anticapitalist systems of exchange that sustained left theater during the period under investigation. It makes the case for reading the intersection of Irish drama and utopian socialism through queer theory, based on their shared ambivalence about what Lee Edelman calls “reproductive futurism,” and draws on the work of Jose Munoz, J. J. Halberstam, and Natalie Melas to elaborate a comparative paradigm which is not defined by developmental logic or capitalist conceptions of value. It argues for the necessity of treating socialism as an embodied praxis, especially in the Irish context. It concludes with summaries of the five chapters and the epilogue.

Abstract:
As new technologies that aid in reproduction develop, new ethical questions emerge in connection with conception, prenatal development, and birth. Pharmacists may find themselves in situations where they need to address ethical controversies surrounding genetic screening, counseling, and gene therapy. This chapter addresses those topics. The authors also examine the soundness of ethical justifications for genetic screening and gene therapy. Cases cover the topics of genetic counseling on ambiguous results, disclosure of unanticipated findings, genetic screening to reduce the incidence of disease, in vitro fertilization, embryo biopsy, surrogacy, and gene therapy and genetic engineering.

Abstract:
Abolitionist sentiments had long circulated in the British Atlantic world, but it was not until the 1760s in Virginia that they gained political traction in a colony dependent on slave labor. The politics of reproduction explain the success of abolitionism in this time and place: Virginia was unique among Britain’s colonies because, by the mid-eighteenth century, its slave population was growing, and wealthy planters had no need for fresh recruits. The American Revolution depleted the slave populations in the Caribbean, however, because it disrupted both the slave trade and the flow of imported foodstuffs. Consequently, British politicians began to fantasize, by the 1780s, that Caribbean slave societies could mimic the demographic success in North America in order to enjoy the economic benefits of a plentiful labor supply and allow for the abolition of the slave trade. This vision for reform was postponed, however, by geopolitical developments, including the Haitian Revolution.

Abstract:
The story of the Afro-Caribbean midwife Doll illuminates the politics of midwifery on Newton plantation in Barbados. It is well known that midwives wielded a great deal of power, but the racial dynamics of that power have received less attention. Doll’s story indicates that she vied with white women for the position of midwife, and that the former were viewed by the plantation’s white managers as more responsible guardians of the reproduction of the labor force. Plantation managers therefore eventually took steps to replace Doll with a white midwife. The Newton ledgers allow us to correlate the timing of pivotal moments in Doll’s career with pivotal moments in the political history of the Atlantic world. Her rise to power came during the massive disruptions caused by the American Revolution, and her removal from office came during the backlash against elite Afro-Barbadians caused by the Haitian Revolution.

Abstract:
This chapter follows antichinista organizations from the 1910 revolution through to 1928. Antichinistas challenged the Obregon and Calles administrations’ continued Porfirian era reliance upon Chinese commercial circuits. Correspondence from these organizations with the government shows how their national consolidation in 1925 mobilized new strategies to capture public priorities. In this period the dominant racial image of Chinese people shifted from killable subjects of the revolution to pernicious defilers of the nation. A national antichinista campaign coalesced in the articulation of Mexican women’s concern for the prevention of Chinese men’s sexual relations with Mexican women. Their propaganda depicted Mexican women’s sexual reproduction as an evolutionary mechanism for racial betterment. They spread a popular discourse of a mestizo national racial future to which the Chinese men were the most significant threat. In doing so, antichinistas constructed a popular discourse of ethical governance and authentic revolutionary action in the expansion of authoritarian state power.

Wyatt, Tristram D. Animal Behaviour: A Very Short Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780198712152.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
How animals behave is crucial to their survival and reproduction. Animal Behaviour: A Very Short Introduction discusses how animal behaviour has evolved, how behaviours develop in each individual (considering the interplay of genes, epigenetics, and experience), how we can understand animal societies, and how we can explain collective behaviour such as swirling flocks of starlings. The application of new molecular tools, such as DNA fingerprinting and genomics, and developments in computing and image analysis are causing a revolution in the study of animal behaviour. Combining these methods with field studies, it looks at mammals, butterflies, honeybees, fish, and birds, analysing what drives behaviour, and exploring instinct, learning, and culture.
