Full textChina, a multinational country with 56 nationalities, has a complex linguistic configuration with more than two hundred languages within its borders. The prestige and hegemonic position of standardized contemporary chinese relegates the languages and cultures of the 55 ethnic minorities to the shadows, in contrast to a state policy that advocates the “flowering of the 56 nationalities in the great family of the Chinese Nation”. In the current context where China tackles controversially the ethnic issues and where we are witnessing an accelerated urbanization and globalization, this thesis aims to highlight the language practices, glottopolitical interventions, language representations, and sociolinguistic identity of Tibetans in their aspirations for educational and social success in mainland China, specifically in Shandong province – our field of research. Our reflection is based on a sociolinguistic survey, carried out with a group of Tibetan students attending school in Shandong, quantitatively and qualitatively
Cassagnaud, Josy. "Dynamique des représentations et des pratiques langagières en milieu plurilingue : le cas des jeunes, vivant dans un banga, à Mayotte." Rouen, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007ROUEL596.
Full textThis thesis explores the everyday uses of language by male adolescents in the multilingual environment of Mayotte. The sample chosen concerns 22 adolescents living in bangas, small huts built by the adolescents themselves at puberty, according to well defined rituals. Mayotte belongs to the Comorian archipelago situated in the Canal between Mozambique and Madagascar, The population is composed of three ethnical groups (African, Asian, and Mediterranean) and the presence of three families of languages (Bantu, Semitic, and Malay-Polynesian) is representative of the process of acculturation and assimilation that has integrated distinct and yet exclusive groups into a way of life peculiar to Mayotte. The present linguistic situation is the result of different waves of migration, without taking into account the fact that that this island has been French since 1841. Alongside French, two traditional oral languages are locally predominant (the Shibushi and the Shimaore). Indeed, Mayotte, unlike the three other islands that make up the Comorian archipelago, has a second native language derived from Sakalave, a language which originates in the north of Madagascar. This oral language has two variants, the Kibushi-Kimaore and the Kiantalaoutsi. Shibushi is spoken in about ten villages, while Kiantalaoutsi, apart from two villages, is only spoken by the inhabitants of the immediate outskirts of Mamoudzou. French, the colonial language, used in public services and in schools, has generated related socio-cultural learning problems. Inadequate knowledge of French may partly explain the level of academic failure even though perceptions towards French are undergoing a change, notably because of its importance on the linguistic marketplace : it is no longer perceived as a colonial language which render users “kafir” infidel, but instead as the “language of bread and butter,” enabling its users to find jobs. The adolescents in this survey used local languages mainly within their familial framework and among their peers. Local languages, shimaoré and shibushi fulfill two functions : one of integration and the other of identification – a function of integration insofar as the use of the local language is, in itself, evidence of affiliation. But although the adolescents questioned, endorsed their continued attachment to local languages, and particularly to their mother tongue, they nonetheless admitted unanimously that it was hardly possible to avoid using French. Moreover, they remarked a loss of vocabulary in local languages and the increased presence of words borrowed from French. As in the “cités,” of the suburban areas of France, a specific “youth language” has emerged as something of a trend in the urban areas of Mamoudzou, the capital of Mayotte, and this “youth language” has started to become generalized even in outer “bush” villages. The nature of the intended message, whether phatic, cryptic, or amusing, determines the choice of the language used, and this in turn, determines the extent of code-switching between languages observed. This phenomena of a specific “youth language” may also be observed in some African countries, in Madagascar and on the island of Reunion, etc. The emergence of a “language” for communicating with portable telephones has also been remarked along with the concomitant passion for these devices, and French tends to be favored with this mode of communication because local languages are not standardized enough. French has thus become the language of modernity. And although it may be inadequately mastered, French remains a very important part of the local linguistic repertoire and has evolved to the point where it is now the language used to express emotions, a fact attested by its favored status in love-letters. This situation of hierarchical bilingualism remains complex and much work is needed before a linguistic politic that allows more balanced multilingualism can be envisaged in order to prevent local languages from disappearing under the present hegemonic pressure of French

Full textThe linguistic policy in favor of the common romani in Romania induces a sociolinguistic rupture in the Roma linguistic practices and representations. The discourses supporting the standard romani imposition realize a unified representation of the Roma through the reduction of the signifiers' polysemy used to qualify them. Because of the fundamental dialogic property of language, these regulating language forces mark the Roma discourses without annihilating the subjective part in the naming, significations, or diverse representations of the identity positions - in discourse. The subjective discourse about language enforces a rupture in the language relation, evolving from a pragmatic relation to judgements of values. Finally, the school adds a reflexive and a subjective telation to language. It appears as an emergence's sign of a norm founded as a law not as an average use. The didactics choices concerning the treatment of variations, like a continuum or a hierarchy could be determinant regarding to the evolution of the Roma linguistic practices characterized by the diglossic rapport

Full textThe current compositional techniques tend to consider the musical speech according to a global nature. The combination of the various dimensions of the writing proposes distinct spaces; parametric spaces. These parametric spaces must be considered under a metaphorical optics: they represent the sound characteristics of the musical speech, the resultants of various associations of parameters. By taking supports on the analyses of Ethers by Tristan Murail, of Nachtmusik I by Emmanuel Nunes and of Spiri by Franco Donatoni I will try to characterize the various types of parametric spaces according to their aesthetic heritages. Lastly, I will analyze one of my works, Hier ne finira que demain et demain a commencé il y a dix mille ans, which is developed in his entirety on a dialectical between different parametric spaces. This last analysis will allow me, I hope for it, to propose the various characteristics raised in this thesis and to show the relevance of a use of these parametric spaces within a musical speech

Full textThis research work focuses on the language practices of alloglot students born in France. Its objective is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to study the language practices of these students based on their plurilingual and pluricultural skills and their exposure to French at home, in a comparative approach with allophone students. On the other hand, it claims to identify the representations, as well as the choices and didactic actions, of primary school teachers when they are responsible for teaching the language of instruction to these pupils. The problem of this study concerns the influence of the language practices of alloglot students born in France on the representations, choices and didactic actions of teachers in priority education (PE). Two hypotheses emerge from this: the over-representation of alloglot students in PE leads teachers to overestimate their language difficulties; the practical epistemology of the teacher and the language dispositions of alloglot students influence the joint didactic action in PE. The field of study includes eighteen classes of preparatory courses (CP) and medium courses (CM2) in EP and outside EP, for a total of 417 students and 18 teachers. The language practices of allophones born in France are examined in parallel with those of allophones at the context (EP/non-EP) and class level (CP/CM2) levels. The aim is to characterize the language practices of alloglots born in France and to question a specificity of plurilingualism in PE that may influence teachers' representations

Full textThis dissertation identifies language practices and representations of Syrian refugees living in Zaatari camp in Jordan. Its objective is to understand the socio-language reality as it is experienced from within the camp in order to offer suggestions for an education that address the specificities of refugees’ language needs. To do this, I carried out a microsociological study of the interviews I conducted with numerous refugees and the drawings they produced. Based on an interdisciplinary approach and an ethnographic methodology, two levels of analysis are proposed. The first level highlights the characteristics of the camp as an apparatus, its paradoxes, its toponyms, and some of its political and humanitarian issues. The second level focuses on the meaning and the role of language learning and its use in this marginal space. In so doing, this level sheds light on the changing dynamic of refugees’ language identity, their relationship to otherness, their language subjectivation, and their diverse motivations. The dissertation explores the change of language paradigm in the camp through various refugees’ everyday, professional, and educational situations. It analyzes the impact of such a change on refugees’ relation to languages, particularly Arabic and English. It further examines the language lessons that are provided by schools and NGOs and supports the need for a “tailor-made” school program that is appropriate for students who are survivors of trauma. The dissertation evaluates the relevance of a biographical approach aimed at reinforcing academic resilience and finally advocates for a plurilingual and intercultural education that would contribute to developing intersubjectivity and empathy among Syrian refugees and humanitarian workers

Full textThis thesis examines the links between the history of the french word "cité", the construction of four "cités" in Lyon, and the later interpretations of these projects and their name. It shows that the ways in wich cities and neighbourhoods are seen and represented are not static ; they are not built outside praxis that they would guide, but originate from within these praxis. The research suggests interactions between ordinary, professional and scholarly representations and questions the contribution of social sciences to the stigmatization of working class neighbourhoods

Full textThey speak in "Black". This study presents the sociolinguistic situation of children originating from Africa in France. Based on a study involving 350 children ageing from 9 to 15, the author analyses their linguistic practices inside as welle a outside the family. Particular attention has been given to factors influencing the transmission of African languages in France : social, cultural, and factors related to the migration history and the sociolinguistic situation in the countries of origin. The roles of the communication situation, age and gender has also been taken in consideration. Furthermore, the author examines children attitudes towards their African language(s) and French. Moreover, the very important symbolic function of the African language is not incompatible with an eventual linguistic insecurity and the integration of sociolinguistic minorisation, whose target are the linguistic practices of migrant africans. Finally, using semi-directive interviews, the author examines the correlation beetween linguistic insecurity integration of the minorisation and construction of additive or substractive bilinguality
