Full textThis study investigates macrostructural aspects in text comprehension and memorization. This level, referred to as one of the highest in comprehension, corresponds to the semantic organization of the general ideas that are coming out of a text. It results from the implementation of different operations (selection, construction,. . . ) by the subject himself. If the correct functioning of each operation is necessary for this activity to unfold satisfactorily, it is not, however, sufficient. These operations function in hierarchical levels: the performing of the selective operations yields the implementation of the building operations

Full textConducted chronologically, this thesis examines questions of place and space in the pictorial and textual work of the Irish-born artist William Orpen (1878-1931).This research is based on the results of different types of approach (art history, literary criticism, philosophy, psychology, sociology). Its aim is to shed light on the question of origin, which for Orpen is synonymous with separations, fractures and ruptures of all kinds. It also demonstrates that ideas of place and space are not foreign to those of in-betweenness: in-between two centuries and two countries (England and Ireland) during a period of deep change, Orpen was, in his literary and artistic practice, halfway between tradition and modernity, between unity and fragmentation, between centre and periphery. The tension between these different poles inevitably resulted in a crisis for the society portrait painter he was at first, and then for the official war painter he became in France in 1917—a crisis which required him to make choices, to leave his “place in the sun” and to head for an uncertain elsewhere. This crisis, characteristic of the modern period, concerned visual and textual representation, but was also human, political, social, moral and religious.I propose to show that Orpen never stopped exploring the condition of modern man, considering the multiple manifestations of order and disorder, the conflicts of space and emptiness, the reconciliation of permanence and metamorphosis, the struggle between light and shadow, the relationship between the real and the imaginary, the multiform interplay of polarities

Full textThis research investigates the effect of prior knowledge on comprehension and memorization of expository texts describing the use of softwares. We theorize that readers of different levels of prior knowledge have different knowledge structures, temporal-causal for beginners and teleological for advanced, and that these structures determine the reading times of the textual information to be encoded, implicit and explicit, and the retrieval of this information. More precisely, we assume that for advanced, the goal and the outcome are directly and strongly associated in memory while the actions, necessary to attain the goal, are subordinated, and that the type of relationships beginners established among the goal, the outcome, and the actions varies according to the order in which they appear in the text. Six experimentations were realized to test this hypothesis. The first test was to show a comprehension facilitation ascribed to the homology of structures between prior knowledge and texts. The second test was to use a primed recognition task that allowed us to study the relationship readers with different levels of prior knowledge established among the goal of a sequence, the actions necessary to attain the goal, and the obtained outcome. We assume that the relationship advanced established among the goal, the actions and the outcome depends on their prior knowledge structures whereas that of beginners varies according to the order in which textual information appears in the text. Four experiments, distinguished by different presentation orders of sentences expressed a goal, an action and an outcome, were realized. The results, that support our main assumption, were simulated and reproduced with the construction-integration model proposed by kintsch (1988, 1998)

Full textDespite the difficulties in identifying women’s voices in classical Athens, the funerary context is quite enlightening about iconographic and written representations of the deceased. Epitaphs, short inscriptions as well as more detailed epigrams, give us an insight into how women, whether Athenians’ wives, mothers, sisters or daughters, were named and commemorated. Studying together connected inscriptions and images as a whole puts a light on a new set of meanings. Funerary monuments, displayed in public spaces, are indeed communication devices, addressing the passer-by or the deceased themselves.Epigraphical and iconographical evidence are crossed-referenced in this study, which focuses on archaeological data, but also literary ones, in order to define masculine and feminine views on women. Most of conventional representations inscribe Athenians wives and daughters in their social relativity, to such an extent that they appear framed, in the inscriptions as well as in the images. However, our analysis shows that the communication embedded in epigrams, especially between husbands and wives, temper this framing phenomenon, by giving us access to a more personal situation. Some even echo the husband’s or the deceased wife’s voice. Finally, representing women in a frontal view on classical attic funerary monuments is another way for these women to express themselves, if not by their speech, at least by their gaze

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to bring new insights on the identification and cohabitation of institutional logics in a hybrid organization. The question of the identification of logics is the main concern to then be able to understand the inner workings of logics, their relationships and implications in hybrid organisations, under the influence from a plurality of logics. By taking into account both textual and visual data, we contribute to consider the information contained in these data, as their role in the diffusion of logics. To support the cohabitation of logics, hybrid organizations use texts and visuals in different support. Focused on a case study, the organisation of Scouts and Guides of France, we develop several content analyses, qualitative and quantitative, textual and visual, to capture logics and understand their relationships

Full textThe impressive increase in the quantity of textual data makes it difficult today to analyze them without the assistance of tools. However, a text written in natural language is unstructured data, i.e. it cannot be interpreted by a specialized computer program, without which the information in the texts remains largely under-exploited. Among the tools for automatic extraction of information from text, we are interested in automatic text interpretation methods for the entity normalization task that consists in automatically matching text entitiy mentions to concepts in a reference terminology. To accomplish this task, we propose a new approach by aligning two types of vector representations of entities that capture part of their meanings: word embeddings for text mentions and concept embeddings for concepts, designed specifically for this work. The alignment between the two is done through supervised learning. The developed methods have been evaluated on a reference dataset from the biological domain and they now represent the state of the art for this dataset. These methods are integrated into a natural language processing software suite and the codes are freely shared

Full textThe manipulation of the huge volume of documents available on the Web requires the design of efficient techniques of information retrieval, extraction and querying. For solving such problems, it is necessary to be able to deal with a semantic representation of the content of documents. Domain ontologies can be used for representation of the semantic of the content of documents. These ontologies can be themselves represented within knowledge representation formalisms. The main contribution of the research work presented in this thesis holds on the use of description logics for the manipulation of textual documents : interaction with XML description of documents, document annotation, representation of ontologies in the domain of documents, et datisfaction of queries on documents. This research work has led to the design of a prototype system based on description logics. This study and the associated implemented system has led us to propose a multi-layered architecture for manipulating textual documents for the semantic Web. A final aspectof this research work relies on the definition of a similarity mesure on document that can be used in a number of applications by similarity, and querying documents by similarity

Full textGiven the amount of Arabic textual information available on the web, developing effective Information Retrieval Systems (IRS) has become essential to retrieve relevant information. Most of the current Arabic SRIs are based on the bag-of-words representation, where documents are indexed using surface words, roots or stems. Two main drawbacks of the latter representation are the ambiguity of Single Word Terms (SWTs) and term mismatch. The aim of this work is to deal with SWTs ambiguity and term mismatch. Accordingly, we propose four contributions to improve Arabic content representation, indexing, and retrieval. The first contribution consists of representing Arabic documents using Multi-Word Terms (MWTs). The latter is motivated by the fact that MWTs are more precise representational units and less ambiguous than isolated SWTs. Hence, we propose a hybrid method to extract Arabic MWTs, which combines linguistic and statistical filtering of MWT candidates. The linguistic filter uses POS tagging to identify MWTs candidates that fit a set of syntactic patterns and handles the problem of MWTs variation. Then, the statistical filter rank MWT candidate using our proposed association measure that combines contextual information and both termhood and unithood measures. In the second contribution, we explore and evaluate several IR models for ranking documents using both SWTs and MWTs. Additionally, we investigate a wide range of proximity-based IR models for Arabic IR. Then, we introduce a formal condition that IR models should satisfy to deal adequately with term dependencies. The third contribution consists of a method based on Distributed Representation of Word vectors, namely Word Embedding (WE), for Arabic IR. It relies on incorporating WE semantic similarities into existing probabilistic IR models in order to deal with term mismatch. The aim is to allow distinct, but semantically similar terms to contribute to documents scores. The last contribution is a method to incorporate WE similarity into Pseud-Relevance Feedback PRF for Arabic Information Retrieval. The main idea is to select expansion terms using their distribution in the set of top pseudo-relevant documents along with their similarity to the original query terms. The experimental validation of all the proposed contributions is performed using standard Arabic TREC 2002/2001 collection

Full textWe present our research and our own realization on a KBMS (Knowledge Based Management System) aiming at processing any kind of data, especially textual data, and the related knowledge. In this field of applied Artificial Intelligence, we propose a way for representing knowledge : to describe it in a semi-natural language able as well to describe structures or relations as rules. Knowledge is managed as conceptual definitions figuring in a dictionary which represents the knowledge base. The power of this language allows to process a lot of ambiguities, especially those coming from contextual polysemia, to deal with metonymia or incomplete knowledge, and to solve several kinds of paraphrases. Simultaneous polyhierarchies as well as chunks are taken into account. The system has been specially studied for automatic processing of medical reports. An application to neuro radiology has been taken as example. But it could be applied as well to any other field, included outside Medecine to any professional field. Text analysis is realized in two steps : first a conceptual extraction, secondly a structural analysis. The first step only is taken into account in this thesis. It aims at retrieving pertinent documents, matching them to the given question by comparison between concepts, not between character strings. An overview of the second step will be presented. The final goal is to be able to retrieve the knowledge contained into the texts, i. E. The data themselves, and to manage it in respect to the knowledge represented into the dictionaries

Full textThis Ph.D. thesis is about the establishment of textual data similarities in the client relation domain. Two subjects are mainly considered : - the automatic analysis of short messages in response of satisfaction surveys ; - the search of products given same criteria expressed in natural language by a human through a conversation with a program. The first subject concerns the statistical informations from the surveys answers. The ideas recognized in the answers are identified, organized according to a taxonomy and quantified. The second subject concerns the transcription of some criteria over products into queries to be interpreted by a database management system. The number of criteria under consideration is wide, from simplest criteria like material or brand, until most complex criteria like color or price. The two subjects meet on the problem of establishing textual data similarities thanks to NLP techniques. The main difficulties come from the fact that the texts to be processed, written in natural language, are short ones and with lots of spell checking errors and negations. Establishment of semantic similarities between words (synonymy, antonymy, ...) and syntactic relations between syntagms (conjunction, opposition, ...) are other issues considered in our work. We also study in this Ph. D. thesis automatic clustering and classification methods in order to analyse answers to satisfaction surveys

Full textThe objective of this research is to study an aspect of comprehension text; the construction of the mental representation and the preservation of coherence, according to working memory capacities of the reader. To understand a text, the reader is brought to elaborate a mental representation of the situation evoked by this one (i.e., the model of situation). To this aim, the reader should put in relation the information in the course of treatment with those handled earlier and delete information became irrelevant to maintain the coherence of the meaning (Kintsch, 1998; Gernsbacher, 1990). Memorial skills are thus essential in the implementation of this coherence. Besides, this research of coherence should be made from several dimensions of the text, namely the spatiality, the temporality, the causality, and the emotion (Zwaan, Langston and Graesser, on 1995).Our first objective was to highlight the existence of the mechanism of suppression of the spatial information during the construction of the mental representation. For that purpose, we presented texts containing two spatial informations, one of this information was developed in a preferential way (the other one becoming irrelevant) and we made vary the quantity of textual data presented according to texts. This protocol allowed us to test the inhibition, and the suppression of this spatial information. To study the link between working memory capacities and the process of suppression, we used a test that evaluates the capacity of the working memory of the participants (i.e. Corsi’s blocks). Our second objective was to test in a more complete way the implementation of inhibition and suppression processes during reading of a text according to the type of presented information (relevant, irrelevant and incoherent with the story of the text).Obtained results allowed us to confirm the existence of a process of inhibition which intervenes for the incoherent information of a text, and a mechanism of suppression occurring for the irrelevant information. The inconsistent information seems to be inhibited at first, before definitively eliminated by the mental representation of the text. These two processes are necessary to the construction of a coherent model of situation of a text

Full textThe aim of this PhD thesis is to study representations and narratives on dams, which are often controversial infrastructures. If the symbolic role of dams has been underlined in the literature, few studies actually focus on the perception of dams and their spatial and temporal trajectories. Building on the literature of social and cultural geography on representation, and the writings of political ecology on discourse, this thesis confronts different sources (newspapers, interviews and archives), study areas (in France and Australia) and methodological approaches (quantitative and qualitative) in order to follow the discursive evolution of hydraulic infrastructure. The points of view of various stakeholders are also considered: inhabitants, engineers and hydraulic institutions, opponents to dams, administrations in charge of nature protection and scientists who produce environmental knowledge. From a methodologicial perspective, the dissertation highlights the limits of certain material and illustrates the necessity to consider different sources in parallel. The results show the evolution of waterscapes, hydrosocial spaces and cycles---the gradual concessions made to environmentalists at the expense of hydraulic bureaucracies---but they also illustrate, on a broader perspective, the production and the flow of discourses on the environment---the disaggregation of a Promethean discourse on nature and the multiplication of different and sometimes opposing representations of the environment---particularly during conflicts and controversies

Full textThis study aims at clarifying the connections between Raymond QUENEAU’s prose works and the narratives from the English-speaking world which he read and listed from 1917 to 1938. On the basis of a rational perusal of QUENEAU’s reading lists, we first delineated a group of ten writers who announce or epitomize literary modernity and whose writings reveal a concurrence, both precocious and lasting, with the French writer’s own texts (Edgar Allan POE, Lewis CARROLL, Joseph CONRAD, Henry JAMES, James JOYCE, William FAULKNER, Gertrude STEIN, Ernest HEMINGWAY, Henry MILLER, Erskine CALDWELL). This empirical foundation having been firmly established, we were then able to go beyond the links which have been widely discussed in current criticism and to identify less detectable and sometimes underrated relations. Within that framework we investigated several issues : how does QUENEAU express his literary originality against the background of modern poetics where the basic features of classical fiction are thoroughly undermined because of the doubt cast upon the validity of meaningful representation? Once seen in the company of his favourite English-speaking authors, how does Queneau use the art of writing to outline an ontology of anxiety when facing the possible annihilation of both mundane reality and beings?
