Abstract:
This study focuses on how the implementation of DL in teaching report writing for junior high school students based on 2013 curriculum. It has three research questions: (1)how is the implementation of DL in teaching report writing, (2) how are the students’ responses towards DL during the teaching learning of report writing, (3) how is the students’ writing report after taught by implementation of DL.This study used qualitative research. It focuses on natural setting, has an interest in meaning, the perspective emphasizes on a process, concern with an inductive analysis and grounded theory. The data collection techniques are observation and interview to anstablewer the first and second research questions, and documentation to answer first and third research questions. The result of this study reveals when teaching report writing, the teacher implements DL which is relevant and appropriate with the theories. He uses six steps, (1) stimulation (2) problem statement (3) data collection (4) data processing (5) verification (6) generalization. The students’ responses are positive in five steps, except data processing, the students’ response is negative, because of limited time. In all of the writing, the teacher gives his comments. It makes students pay attention to their result, and know their mistakes as motivational correction for them. All of students’ score isstill high of the standard score.

Abstract: This project aims to develop a writing assistant. It has been designed to check for spelling and grammatical errors, analyze sentiment, detect plagiarism, and translate text from one language to another. This tool, using Natural Language Processing (NLP), analyzes text and provides appropriate error-free recommendations. Working as a writing assistant, this project assists users with their day-to-day activities, whether an informal letter to a friend, an important project report, or an online blog post. Social networks and community forums have become one of the most used platforms to communicate with people who may be from a different region speaking a foreign language. It consists of a massive amount of data where positive content from one’s point of view may not be the same for others. In such situations, a writing assistant may act as an extra set of eyes to catch common errors and improve writing. Abstract:
Free-form radiology reports associated with coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) include nuanced and complicated linguistics to report cardiovascular disease. Standardization and interpretation of such reports is crucial for clinical use of CCTA. Coronary Artery Disease Reporting and Data System (CAD-RADS) has been proposed to achieve such standardization by implementing a strict template-based report writing and assignment of a score between 0 and 5 indicating the severity of coronary artery lesions. Even after its introduction, free-form unstructured report writing remains popular among radiologists. In this work, we present our attempts at bridging the gap between structured and unstructured reporting by natural language processing. We present machine learning models that while being trained only on structured reports, can predict CAD-RADS scores by analysis of free-text of unstructured radiology reports. The best model achieves 98% accuracy on structured reports and 92% 1-margin accuracy (difference of \le 1 in the predicted and the actual scores) for free-form unstructured reports. Our model also performs well under very difficult circumstances including nuanced and widely varying terminology used for reporting cardiovascular functions and diseases, scarcity of labeled data for training our model, and uneven class label distribution.

Abstract:
Data warehouses have demonstrated their applicability in numerous application fields such as agriculture, the environment and health. This paper proposes a general framework for defining a data warehouse and its aggregations using logic programming. The objective is to show that data managers can easily express, in Prolog, traditional data warehouse queries and combine data aggregation operations with other advanced Prolog features. It is shown that this language provides advanced features to aggregate information in an in-memory database. This paper targets data managers; it shows them the direct writing of data warehouse queries in Prolog using an easily understandable syntax. The queries are not necessarily in an optimal form from a processing point of view, but a data manager can easily use or write them.

Abstract:
Prediction for requirements for the LHC computing for Run 3 and for Run 4 (HL-LHC) over the course of the next 10 year, show a considerable gap between required and available resources, assuming budgets will globally remain flat at best. This will require some radical changes to the computing models for the data processing of the LHC experiments. The use of large scale computational resources at HPC centres worldwide is expected to increase substantially the cost-efficiency of the processing. In order to pave the path towards the HL-LHC data processing, the Swiss Institute of Particle Physics (CHIPP) has taken the strategic decision to migrate the processing of all the Tier-2 workloads for ATLAS and other LHC experiments from a dedicated x86 ̲ 64 cluster that has been in continuous operation and evolution since 2007, to Piz Daint, the current European flagship HPC, which ranks third in the TOP500 at the time of writing. We report on the technical challenges and solutions adopted to migrate to Piz Daint, and on the experience and measured performance for ATLAS in over one year of running in production.

Abstract:
In this report, we introduce the Hinoki project, which set out to develop web-based Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) systems for Japanese language learners more than a decade ago. Utilizing Natural Language Processing technologies and other linguistic resources, the project has come to encompass three systems, two corpora and many other resources. Beginning with the reading assistance system Asunaro, we describe the construction of Asunaro's multilingual dictionary and it's dependency grammar-based approach to reading assistance. The second system, Natsume, is a writing assistance system that uses large-scale corpora to provide an easy to use collocation search feature that is interesting for it's inclusion of the concept of genre. The final system, Nutmeg, is an extension of Natsume and the Natane learner corpus. It provides automatic correction of learners errors in compositions by using Natsume for its large corpus and genre-aware collocation data and Natane for its data on learner errors.

Abstract:
Abstract The explosive growth of the global data volume demands new and advanced data storage methods. Here, we report that data storage with ultrahigh capacity (~1 TB per disc) can be realized in low-cost plastics, including polycarbonate (PC), precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), polystyrene (PS), and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), via direct fs laser writing. The focused fs laser can modify the fluorescence of written regions on the surface and in the interior of PMMA, enabling three-dimensional (3D) information storage. Through the 3D laser processing platform, a 50-layer data record with low bit error (0.96%) is archived. Visual reading of data is empowered by the fluorescence contrast. The broad variation of fluorescence intensity assigns 8 gray levels, corresponding to 3 bits on each spot. The gray levels of each layer present high stability after long-term aging cycles, confirming the robustness of data storage. Upon single pulse control via a high-frequency electro-optic modulator (EOM), a fast writing speed (~1 kB/s) is achieved, which is limited by the repetition frequency of the fs laser.

In the current era of globalization, learning a foreign language has become a necessity for everyone. Not only for adults, but for teenagers and children, the ability to speak foreign languages really supports them to understand other knowledge, especially those using foreign languages. Learning in the scope of public schools under the auspices of the Ministry of National Education and schools under the auspices of the Ministry of Religion such as Madrasah Ibtidaiyah and the like have differences both in the types of lessons in the curriculum and the standards of each of these subjects. For schools that are under the auspices of the department of religion such as Madrasah Ibtidaiyah and the like, the foreign language included in the national curriculum is generally Arabic. While English is usually included in the realm of local content. For the practice of learning these English teachers must develop their own learning implementation plans that have not been included in the national curriculum. Abstract:
Whether type of written corrective feedback (WCF) impacts L2 learning has been investigated for decades. While many product-oriented studies report conflicting findings, the paucity of studies adopting both a process-oriented and curricular approach (e.g., Caras, 2019) underscores the call for further research on: a) the processing dimension of L2 writers’ engagement with WCF in this instructed setting (Manchón & Leow, 2020), b) from an ISLA applied perspective (Leow, 2019a; Leow & Manchón, 2022), and c) any potential relationship with subsequent performances. Also, whether type of linguistic item (e.g., morphological vs. syntactic) plays a role in the processing dimension also warrants further probing. This preliminary quasi-experimental study explored the cognitive processes of 10 adult L2 writers with minimal previous exposure to Spanish interacting with WCF (both direct and metalinguistic) on morphological and syntactic errors. Think aloud data gathered from three compositions written within the natural writing conditions of a foreign language curriculum were transcribed, coded for depth of processing (DoP) (Leow, 2015), and correlated with subsequent performances on the target items. The results revealed: 1) a higher DoP for metalinguistic WCF, 2) differences in processing of linguistic items, 3) similar DoP over time, and 4) a beneficial relationship between DoP and subsequent performances. Recommendations for future research underscore the importance of acknowledging variables within the instructed setting that may impact a pure effect of WCF on L2 development.

Abstract:
AbstractVerbal reports, specifically in the form of concurrent verbalizations (i.e., think-alouds [TAs]), have played a foundational role in the production of knowledge in applied linguistics. Most often drawn upon because the talk they generate is deemed to accurately reflect individual learners’ thought or cognitive processes as they complete an L2 task, concurrent verbalization methods have been central to investigations of and claims about the learning, use, and assessment of L2 vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, and writing (among others). And although critical discussion concerning the quality of spoken data obtained through concurrent verbalization methods continues among L2 researchers (e.g., Cohen, Andrew D. 1987. Using verbal reports in research on language learning. In Claus Færch & Gabriele Kasper (eds.), Introspection in second language research, 82–95. Philadelphia: Multilingual Matters; Cohen, Andrew D. 1996. Verbal reports as a source of insights into second language learner strategies. Applied Language Learning 7(1–2). 5–24; Cohen, Andrew D. 2013. Verbal report. In Carol A. Chapelle (ed.), The encyclopedia of applied linguistics. Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell), the majority of this discussion has focused primarily on how best to generate talk which “more accurately reflect[s] the actual thought processes” of L2 users (Cohen, Andrew D. 2013. Verbal report. In Carol A. Chapelle (ed.), The encyclopedia of applied linguistics. Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell: 1). The result has been to further naturalize approaches to concurrent verbalizations which treat language as a neutral means for accessing cognition, and similarly, which treat the verbalizations themselves as individually accomplished events. In this article, my aim is to diversify the critical discussion by describing how discursive psychology (e.g., Edwards, Derek & Jonathan Potter. 1992. Discursive psychology. New York: Sage; Potter, Jonathan. 2006. Cognition and conversation. Discourse Studies 8(1). 131–140) and a conversation analytic perspective (e.g., Kasper, Gabriele. 2009. Locating cognition in second language interaction and learning: Inside the skull or in public view? International Review of Applied Linguistics 47. 11–36; Markee, Numa & Mi-Suk Seo. 2009. Learning talk analysis. International Review of Applied Linguistics 47. 37–63) can be combined to present an alternative to both ‘naturalized’, as well as sociocultural, understandings of concurrent verbalization data and methods. To this end, after establishing some of the key differences between information processing, sociocultural, and discursive approaches, I draw on data from two recently published TA-based studies in an attempt to accomplish two goals: the first is to shift critical discussion towards issues of epistemology, methodology, and research representation, and the second is to identify methodological issues about which researchers working from different conceptual orientations might engage in cross-paradigmatic dialogue.

Academic words include words that are not commonly encountered in formal circumstances and specific to particular fields of study. Undergraduate students of the English Department are required to acquire academic words in applied linguistics for academic reading and writing research articles. This paper reports on generating the academic word list for the students of the English Department by using AntConc, a concordance software application. In this study, corpus linguistic research was adopted, in particular the corpus-based analysis category. Data were gathered from approximately one thousand credible Applied Linguistics journal articles published from 2008 to 2021. AntConc software played a significant role in processing these data to get the intended corpus, which was then classified and categorized based on the frequency of occurrences. The results include an academic word list and its word family. These clusters of academic words are intended for undergraduate students of the English Department in the first up to fourth academic semesters to prepare them to participate in international academic discourse, such as writing and publishing research articles. This list can also be used as a basis for further research related to academic vocabulary. Abstract:
This paper will examine the collaborative teaching process undertaken at College of the North Atlantic- Qatar (CNA-Q) by Engineering and the Communication faculties to improve the overall quality of engineering students’ capstone projects known as the Technical Thesis. The Technical Thesis is divided into two separate components: a proposal stage (Tech Thesis 1- investigative) and a technical/presentation stage (Tech Thesis 2 - final written and oral communicative report). It involves a complex blending of experimentation, technical information and data with competent formal technical report writing skills. In an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) environment, this challenge is formidable for students as it involves high technical as well as linguistic competencies. In an effort to gain accreditation from the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board (CTAB), a standing committee of The Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists (CCTT) which provides national accreditation for over 240 post-secondary engineering technology and applied technology programs in Canada, the School of Engineering realized student results on the Technical Thesis at CNA-Q needed marked improvement. A pilot project, started during the 2008- 2009 academic year, brought engineering faculty from various fields (Chemical Processing, Electrical, Mechanical, Process Automation and Telecommunications) together with writing faculty from the Communications Department to take on the task of improving final Tech Thesis results through co-delivery. Specifically, this paper will examine: the process of developing the collaborative teaching approach at CNA-Q; its perceived value by the stakeholders (faculty and students); the ongoing challenges associated with its delivery; and the overall level of improvement in student performance on the Technical Thesis as a result of the collaboration.

Abstract:
This article reports on a study that explored cross-disciplinary variation in the use of metadiscourse markers in advanced-level student writing, put forward as a realistic target for novice writers. Starting from the stance and engagement categories included in Hyland’s model, we first conducted a comprehensive quantitative analysis of interactional metadiscourse across disciplines. For this analysis, we used an automated processing tool that generates quantity scores for each metadiscourse category. We then carried out a detailed qualitative analysis of selected items that contributed significantly to these category scores. The data for our analyses come from a corpus of 829 student papers from 16 different disciplines. The results showed notable differences in students’ use of metadiscourse features across academic divisions and disciplines. We suggest that this offers evidence of advanced students’ ability to express interactional strategies that are in line with disciplinary expectations. We also found, however, that disciplines that fall into the same academic division were not necessarily similar in their use of interactional metadiscourse, which calls into question the usefulness of existing disciplinary groupings. The findings of this study offer insights into how to build an appropriate writerly stance in different academic communities.

Abstract:
Simple Multi Attribute Rating Technique (SMART) is a method that is able to solve problems with multi criteria. In the evaluation of the final project guidance process students of applied software engineering technology are intended to identify supporting factors as well as obstacles for students in completing the final project. Used several criteria such as liveliness of guidance, guidance response, how to communicate, mastery of materials, problem solving and report writing. The problem in determining the cause of the hampered completion of the final project is the lack of tools that can help in processing the criteria data. The solution is to utilize the SMART method with multi criteria problem solving as a tool in decision making. With the utilization of this method is expected to provide solutions in evaluating the guidance process so that the results can be accepted by all students objectively. With the decision support system model, it is expected to be able to know the problem factor in completing the final project so as to help in the implementation of the final project in the next period.
