Full textThe new era of digital information has increased the social gap for disabled people. We propose a way of taking into account users' special needs in information retrievial systems. We more specifically focused on dyslexic users interacting with question answering systems and documents retrievial systems. A sequential evaluation of a question answering system while answering to real users' questions leads us to a new model for question answering. This probabilistic model takes into account the uncertainty over the query and a non informational user need over the output. It applies to question answering as well as to most information retrievial tasks. An automatic speech recognition system based on phonemes written by dyslexics leads to a N-best list of transcriptions for one query. This provides a basis for hypothesised analysis and weighted term vectors computed with posterior probabilities. The documents provided by retrievial or summarization task can take dyslexia into account by selecting the most readable text units. The readability is estimated with a machine learning approach taking into account specific parameters related to phonologic awareness. We show that an information retrievial system can improve the average readability of its provided results while maintaining high accuracy. This is achieved by linearly including 30 % of readability in the relevance score. When the query is a factual question, the readability is no longer an issue. However, the user can benefit from a confidence score estimated with a measure specific to the question answering task

Full textQuestion generation (QG) is the task of automatically producing a question given some information source containing the answer. It is a subtask within natural language generation (NLG) but is also closely associated with question answering (QA), which is a counterpoint to QG. While QG is concerned with generating the linguistic expression for seeking information, the QA task is concerned with meeting that need by automatically identifying the answer to a question given some information source. Both tasks have direct applicability in domains such as information retrieval, dialogue and conversation, and education. Recent research also indicates that QG and QA, when used jointly in QA-based evaluation, are helpful for factual verification (especially for NLG outputs such as summarisation and data-to-text generations). When used together to produce a discourse representation, they can also help reduce the propensity of large language models (LLMs) to produce text with hallucinations and factual inaccuracies. While QA has long been studied, and approaches have been proposed as early as the 1960s, QG only started to gain more research attention in recent years. Most research on the tasks is focused on addressing only one of them and doing so for a single modality. In QG, previous approaches typically rely on architectures that require heavy processing and do not generally consider the generation of questions across the entirety of the input information source nor the diversity of the ways a question can be phrased. In QA, although work has been done for answering questions given some unstructured input (e.g. a piece of text), and work has also been done for doing so given some structured input (e.g. knowledge graph (KG) or tables), these methods are typically not transferable for use on another input modality. In this thesis, we are focused on QG foremost, with the aim of identifying ways to generate questions across both structured and unstructured information, namely text and KG inputs,in a manner that is controllable for increasing the diversity, comprehensiveness, and coverageof these questions. We also study QG and QA in concert with a model that can controllably generate both simple and complex questions from one modality and also answer them on another modality, an ability that has relevance for improving QA-based evaluation. Finally, we examine doing so for lower-resourced languages other than English, with the view that being able to do so helps enable similar QA-based evaluation for these languages

Full textThis thesis is positioned at the intersection of several research fields, Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval (IR) and Computer Vision, which have unified around representation learning and pre-training methods. In this context, we have defined and studied a new multimodal task: Knowledge-based Visual Question Answering about Named Entities (KVQAE).In this context, we were particularly interested in cross-modal interactions and different ways of representing named entities. We also focused on data used to train and, more importantly, evaluate Question Answering systems through different metrics.More specifically, we proposed a dataset for this purpose, the first in KVQAE comprising various types of entities. We also defined an experimental framework for dealing with KVQAE in two stages through an unstructured knowledge base and identified IR as the main bottleneck of KVQAE, especially for questions about non-person entities. To improve the IR stage, we studied different multimodal fusion methods, which are pre-trained through an original task: the Multimodal Inverse Cloze Task. We found that these models leveraged a cross-modal interaction that we had not originally considered, and which may address the heterogeneity of visual representations of named entities. These results were strengthened by a study of the CLIP model, which allows this cross-modal interaction to be modeled directly. These experiments were carried out while staying aware of biases present in the dataset or evaluation metrics, especially of textual biases, which affect any multimodal task

Full textVideo content has significantly increased in volume and diversity in the digital era, and this expansion has highlighted the necessity for advanced video understanding technologies. Driven by this necessity, this thesis explores semantically understanding videos, leveraging multiple perceptual modes similar to human cognitive processes and efficient learning with limited supervision similar to human learning capabilities. This thesis specifically focuses on video question answering as one of the main video understanding tasks. Our first contribution addresses long-range video question answering, requiring an understanding of extended video content. While recent approaches rely on human-generated external sources, we process raw data to generate video summaries. Our following contribution explores zero-shot and few-shot video question answering, aiming to enhance efficient learning from limited data. We leverage the knowledge of existing large-scale models by eliminating challenges in adapting pre-trained models to limited data. We demonstrate that these contributions significantly enhance the capabilities of multimodal video question-answering systems, where specifically human-annotated labeled data is limited or unavailable

Full textThe main frame of this dissertation is the connection between literature (and the arts) and the crisis of the self and its ethical epistemological issues at the turn of the century. I first show that Huysmans's fetichist Des Esseintes is already an ironical figure of the romantic religion of art, whose search for meaning turns out to be deceptive (and deveiving) at a time when art becomes a mere commodity in the eyes of consumer society, and religion has lost its effectiveness. I then try to trace how Proust, heir to the traditions of Ruskin, Schopenhauer, Baudelaire and Huysmans, eventually solves the problem of art as an essential revelation when he establishes that art is not the contemplation of pure ideas but an act of formal production, revealing nothing but an individual style. For Proust, art is a matter of poetics, and the metaphysical aesthetics turns into a new semiotical understanding, as can be seen from careful study of the drafts and manuscripts: only in 1911-1913 did Swann become the erbodiment of Schopenhauer's theory of musical revelation which had previously been kept asie for the narrator's own revelation (at the end of the novel), and was henceforth characterized as an aesthete. This epistemological revolution is to be understood as the consequence of Proust's reflexion on (his own) poetical praxis, his obsession being the 'pastiche involontaire': a study of his most striking techniques (such as the famous 'je' , the praxis of quotation, the attempt for telling the 'tout a coup') shows how they deal with the question of the subject in art and language - the very question of modern criticism and art theory

Full textThis study is set in the "User -oriented" paradigm in the field of communication and information sciences studies and it shows some unexplored human aspects in socio-professional and ethical searching of information and feedback process when information professionals (librarians, information scientists) are working for their users. One of the aims of this work is, by putting the "question" in the center of concerns for information professionals, to attempt showing the role and functions of the matter within its terms of access to knowledge and information in the “information and knowledge society”, and also considering how and why professionals do experience some difficulties sometimes in complex situations at work when assuming their mission of service in-or in distance- for users. In the final part, this thesis focuses on the side of professional mediators of information, more particularly on one of the obstacles we call « documentary failure » that may happen during the cognitive , documentary and communicational phases of research and restitution (answer) of information to the questioning user. We have included some diverse and significant extracts from results and analysis of our quantitative study and qualitative interviews conducted in situ with librarians and information scientists from 16 different public institutions in Paris, France and its surroundings
