Abstract:
This article focuses on the use of the repertory grid technique as a research instrument for conducting and analyzing interviews in the field of teaching English as a foreign language. As a demonstration of the explanatory usefulness of this methodological framework, a pilot study was carried out to elicit second language teachers’ tacit beliefs concerning cultural perceptions of good language teaching. Repertory grid interviews were conducted with nine teachers at a public university in central Mexico. The data from each group were compared to uncover possible cultural influences on participants’ beliefs. It is hoped that this overview of the method encourages an interest in repertory grid interviews and their analytic techniques in the field of applied linguistics and in English as a foreign language teaching in particular.

Abstract:
Abstract A customer-oriented approach to product development with particular consideration of emotions is represented by Kansei Engineering. Developed by Mitsuo Nagamachi, Kansei Engineering is characterized by the possibility to capture customer perceptions and to translate them into product features. In order to assess these perceptions, a semantic space is generated. For this purpose it is necessary to identify Kansei words that are gathered up through research in marketing concepts, scientific journals and service reports. This procedure though displays the disadvantage of not being able to identify all emotions referring to the investigated product. One way to improve the identification of Kansei words is Repertory Grid. The Repertory Grid technique makes it possible to gather unaltered perceptions through in-depth interviews from the direct interaction with customers. Thus, the interview phase of the Repertory Grid technique offers an improved approach to identify of Kansei words.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the organizational impacts of enterprise mobility and the configurations of mobile information technology (IT) impacts in companies with various value creation logics. Design/methodology/approach An exploratory approach combining semi-structured interview and repertory grid method was used to evaluate managers’ perspectives on the effects of mobile technologies. Findings The qualitative findings unearth managers’ perspectives about the organizational impacts of enterprise mobility, which are categorized into six intermediary dimensions and two fundamental impacts. A further analysis of material collected from interviews also shows the differential context-related configurations of mobile IT impacts in companies. Research limitations/implications This study contributes to literature on the business value of IT in general and mobile IT in particular by examining managers’ cognitive constructions of the organizational impacts of enterprise mobility and highlighting the complexity and context-related variety of mobile IT impacts. Practical implications This study provides valuable insights for managers and decision makers that enterprise mobility shows promise in enhancing a firm’s operational and marketing performance. Originality/value Different from prior literature, this study is an exploratory attempt to investigate complex enterprise-mobility-performance relationship and preliminarily uncovers that the mechanisms with which mobile IT influences firm performance vary in different organizational contexts.

Abstract Multistage expert surveys like the Delphi method are proven concepts for technology forecasting that enable the prediction of content-related and temporal development in fields of innovation (e.g., [1, 2]). Advantages of these qualitative multistage methods are a simple and easy to understand concept while still delivering valid results [3]. Nevertheless, the literature also points out certain disadvantages especially in large-scale technology forecasts in particularly abstract fields of innovation [4]. The proposed approach highlights the usefulness of the repertory grid method as an alternative for technology forecasting and as a first step for preference measurement. The basic approach from Baier and Kohler [5] is modified in-so-far that an online survey reduces the cognitive burden for the experts and simplifies the data collection process. Advantages over alternative approaches through its simple structure and through combining qualitative and quantitative methods are shown and an adaption on an actual field of innovation – civil drones in Germany – is done. The measurement of a common terminology for all experts minimizes misunderstandings during the interview and the achievement of an inter-individual comparable level of abstraction is forced by the laddering technique [6] during the interview.

Abstract Background People with psychosis experience disruptions in personal identity that affect positive and negative symptoms, but the complexity of these phenomena needs to be addressed in an in-depth manner. Using the Personal Construct Theory, we examined whether distinct dimensions of personal identity, as measured with the Repertory Grid Technique along with other cognitive factors, might influence psychotic symptomatology. Method Eighty-five outpatients with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders completed a repertory grid, an observed-rated interview of psychotic symptoms, and measures of cognitive insight, depressive symptoms, neurocognition, and theory of mind. Results Structural equation models revealed that interpersonal dichotomous thinking directly affected positive symptoms. Self-discrepancies influenced positive symptoms by mediation of depressive symptoms. Interpersonal cognitive differentiation and interpersonal cognitive richness mediated the impact of self-reflectivity and neurocognitive deficits in negative symptomatology. Conclusions This study is the first of its kind to examine the structure of personal identity in relation to positive and negative symptoms of psychosis. Results suggest interventions targeted to improving interpersonal dichotomous thinking, self-discrepancies, interpersonal cognitive differentiation, and interpersonal cognitive richness may be useful in improving psychotic symptoms.

Abstract:
This study investigated classroom teachers’ cognitive fictions on the concept of value. The sample consisted of 40 primary school classroom teachers using purposive sampling. The study adopted a qualitative phenomenological research design. Data were collected using a Repertory Grid Interview Questionnaire. The data were analyzed using content analysis. Four hundred cognitive fictions were developed and categorized into ten fundamental values theorized by Schwartz. The cognitive fictions were addressed based on participants’ gender and training in values education. As a result classroom teachers considered the value groups ‘‘achievement’’, ‘‘conformity’’, ‘‘self-direction’’ the most important.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report on the use of two studies that assessed the attitudes of typical computer users. The aim of the research was to compare a self-reporting online survey with a set of one-on-one repertory grid technique interviews. More specifically, this research focussed on participant attitudes toward naive and accidental information security behaviours. Design/methodology/approach In the first study, 23 university students responded to an online survey within a university laboratory setting that captured their attitudes toward behaviours in each of seven focus areas. In the second study, the same students participated in a one-on-one repertory grid technique interview that elicited their attitudes toward the same seven behaviours. Results were analysed using Spearman correlations. Findings There were significant correlations for three of the seven behaviours, although attitudes relating to password management, use of social networking sites, information handling and reporting of security incidents were not significantly correlated. Research limitations/implications The small sample size (n = 23) and the fact that participants were not necessarily representative of typical employees, may have impacted on the results. Practical implications This study contributes to the challenge of developing a reliable instrument that will assess individual InfoSec awareness. Senior management will be better placed to design intervention strategies, such as training and education of employees, if individual attitudes are known. This, in turn, will reduce risk-inclined behaviour and a more secure organisation. Originality/value The literature review indicates that this study addresses a genuine gap in the research.

Abstract:
The topic of self-perception within management has become a subject catching more and more attention. The necessity for leaders’ self-awareness when aiming at high employee satisfaction and productivity still bears a lot of research potential. Developing self-awareness and efficacy are paths that do not have an end or a quota to reach. It is a rather mindset like a tank that can always be filled up more. Leaders’ self-awareness is crucial to improve their abilities and much more inaccurate self-perception can become harmful for an organisations’ performance. Surprisingly, the influence of managers’ self-perception on leadership behaviour and leadership effectiveness has only been studied little in contemporary literature. The main purpose of this article is to identify organizational factors that influence leader’s self-perception and how an organization can develop this characteristic of their managers. Therefore, this paper aims at identifying corporate cultural causes for managers’ distorted self-perception. This task leads evidently to the topic of organizational silence, which is understood as the absence of upward-directed feedback of employees’ input of ideas. Consequently, a corporate culture inherited by organizational silence impacts a manager’s self-perception. Additionally, the contextual literature research on self-perception guided to the subject of error management. It becomes evident that error management functions as a link between organizational silence and managers’ overestimation. Summarizing the article studies the interlinkages of these three research areas and combined them with a new research and hypothesis model tested on a repertory grid data set consisting of 782 personal constructs of a specific corporate culture. Individual construct psychology was chosen as an investigative methodology to ensure unbiased qualitative results. This psychologically grounded methodology is proven to make socially desirable results unlikely due to the intuitive interview structure. The results of this research give practitioners advice for developing corporate culture and self-perception and efficacy of people in leadership positions.

It is reasonable to assume that if the labour market is the dominant force in labour management then the significance of the role of the human resource manager lies in the position it holds at the intersection between the external and the internal market, with recruitment as the joining process. This paper describes a qualitative investigation of hotel human resource managers' perceptions of their labour market environment using the process of recruitment as a vehicle to explore cognitive processes. A cognitive task analysis was completed which utilised four interview methods: task diagram; knowledge audit; simulation interview; and repertory grid. The findings show that the HR managers conform to the appellation of ‘expert’ in that they would use few and simple rules in making decisions. They also assume that the labour market will always provide and that perceptions of what goes on inside the organisation are quite separate. In other words there is both an industry and in organisational perspective at work.

Abstract:

Today the problem of dirty streets is often mentioned in media indicating that it is an environmental and a social problem that needs to be solved. Trash lying around destroys the city picture affecting people negatively. Moreover, unpicked trash might have some devastating consequences in terms of rats and other animals. The population segment that trashes the most is youth between 15 and 29 years old. This study was conducted in order to see whether any specific action can be undertaken to affect young people who cause most of trashing and to reduce their environmentally unfriendly behavior.

In this thesis, the aim is to see how youth who is environmentally unfriendly is different from environmentally friendly in terms of a mindset; how those who are unfriendly think about trashing today and later test different stimuli to find out their effectiveness on the thinking patterns of these individuals.

The research method consisted of two parts using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. First one was a focus group interview which was chosen as an appropriate method to elicit the stimuli with potential to change a mindset. Six stimuli in total, 3 rewards and 3 punishments were chosen to be tested. Second method was an experiment using Repertory Grid technique. This technique’s purpose is to study and describe the values and attitudes of one individual. In this paper this technique was used on two occasions. The result of the first occasion indicated the person’s current mindset toward environment. After that, the person was presented certain stimulus that had a potential to change that person’s thinking pattern and behaviour. After the introduction of the incitement, the individual was asked again to use the grid. Before-and-after results were compared to find out whether the stimulus presented was effective enough to change individual’s thinking pattern.

The study indicated that there are two different mindsets concerning environment. One is the environmental mindset of indifference and the other one is the environmental friendly mindset. However, the gap between these can be mended if those people who are indifferent are affected in a right way. The study further indicates the specific stimuli that can be applied in order eliminated or at least decrease the gap. The most effective one is the shorter distance toward the nearest trashcan. This can be implemented by putting more trashcans on the streets. Moreover, to make the gap even less it would be possible to make the trashcans more aesthetically nice to the eye. Right now they are blending in to the city picture by being grey, black or dark green. Making these look nicer, as the study indicates, can contribute to change in thinking patterns.

Ce travail doctoral a pour objectif de questionner l’expérience vécue par les usagers dans les dispositifs pédagogiques innovants mis en place à l’université. En effet, les différentes vagues de massification de l’accès au supérieur ont introduit une diversification du public étudiant dont la réussite est devenue une priorité. Les discriminants de la réussite sont nombreux, et les facteurs contextuels, dont les pratiques pédagogiques des enseignants en font partie. Ainsi, la transformation pédagogique et numérique est au cœur de différents appels à projet visant à soutenir financièrement l’université dans ses évolutions. Le mode de fonctionnement compétitif des appels à projet et l’émulation qu’il insuffle, fait émerger des propositions de dispositifs de plus en plus innovants. A l’autre bout de la chaîne, des acteurs mettent en œuvre, expérimentent et vivent ces dispositifs sur le terrain. L’objet de ce travail de recherche est d’interroger les acteurs et notamment les étudiants sur leur vécu dans ces innovations pédagogiques, dans le cadre du projet PRéLUDE, un des lauréats du PIA 3 Nouveaux Cursus Universitaires. La recherche est abordée suivant une approche constructiviste, dans une démarche inductive. Elle a utilisé des méthodes de recueil variées : questionnaires, entretiens semi-directifs, entretiens Repertory Grid complétés par une collecte documentaire et l’observation participante. Ces méthodes ont produit des données quantitatives et qualitatives, analysées avec des méthodes quantitatives et qualitatives. Cette diversité méthodologique permet d’analyser l’expérience vécue par les usagers, questionnant ainsi le processus de design à la fois dans l’adéquation de l’idéation aux usagers et dans la mise en œuvre effective du projet idéel
The aim of this doctoral work is to examine the experience of users of innovative teaching methods introduced at university. The various waves of massification of access to higher education have led to a diversification of the student population, whose success has become a priority. There are many factors that determine success, including contextual factors such as teaching practices. As a result, educational and digital transformation is at the heart of various calls for projects aimed at providing financial support for the university's development. The competitive nature of these calls for projects and the emulation they engender give rise to increasingly innovative proposals. At the other end of the chain, those involved implement, experiment with and experience these schemes on the ground. The aim of this research project is to question the players, and in particular the students, about their experience of these educational innovations, as part of the PRéLUDE project, one of the winners of the PIA 3 New University Curricula programme. The research is based on a constructivist, inductive approach. It used a variety of data collection methods: questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, Repertory Grid interviews, supplemented by documentary research and participant observation. These methods produced quantitative and qualitative data, analysed using quantitative and qualitative methods. This methodological diversity makes it possible to analyse the experience of users, thus questioning the design process both in terms of how the ideation is adapted to users and in terms of the actual implementation of the ideal project

Abstract:
The research reported in this thesis investigated preservice primary teachers' constructions of themselves as science teachers. This was done in response to Seddon' s (1991) claim that an approach to teaching the science component of a preservice Bachelor of Education course should be proposed that was congruent with preservice teachers' beliefs about themselves as science teachers. The nature of the research undertaken was interpretive and conversational. It was set in a context of postmodern students in contemporary universities and depended upon preservice teachers sharing their beliefs about themselves with the researcher. To achieve this end and elicit substantive data from individuals, that is, beliefs that affect individuals' behaviour in a consistent manner, the research was couched within a framework of Personal Construct Theory (Kelly, 1955/1991). A variety of data collection methods were used, including characterisation sketches, career snakes, repertory grids, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires. The data received from these sources were reduced through processes of classification to produce profiles of hierarchical personal characteristics for each of the twelve preservice teachers who volunteered to take part in the project. During the collection and classification processes data were triangulated and personal profiles were memberchecked to establish trustworthiness. Based on the Commonality and Sociality Corollaries of Personal Construct Theory (Kelly, 1955/1991) and precedents well established in curriculum development and text writing, the researcher construed the commonalities between individuals' profiles to propose a profile of personal characteristics for a hypothetical preservice primary teacher. This construction was used as a platform from which to propose an approach to teaching science to preservice primary teachers that would be congruent with individual's beliefs about themselves as science teachers. Because of the nature of this derived profile and the manner in which it corresponded with conclusions reached by Shulman (1986, 1987a), the approach to teaching that was adopted was based on Shulman's (1987a) model of pedagogical reasoning and action. Importantly, this approach to teaching science is not prescriptive. It provides science educators with opportunities to recognise and build upon their preservice teacher students' prior experiences, to cater for a wide diversity of personalities, pedagogical skills and interests in science and science teaching, and, most importantly, to treat preservice teachers as social actors. These are conditions that Seddon (1991) claimed would be essential ifthe science pedagogical ideals of tertiary primary teacher education are ever to survive the transition from tertiary studies to primary classroom teaching practices.

of disertation Rhythmic gymnastics (RG) is the only Olympia sport of girls and women and it is characterized by precision, fluency and elegance of movement that emphasizes feminine beauty and grace. At present, there is no coherent concept of long-term sports training of talented gymnasts in Czech RG. The outflow of athletes is evident especially during prepubescence. Basic RG preparation aims gradual development of motor abilities, practice of sports (gymnastics) skills and the beginning of specialized techniques based on the principle of comprehensive movement base. This period (in rhythmic gymnastics between 7-9 years of gymnasts) for further performance growth is very substantial, in terms of content and in terms of training forms and influence of trainers (coaches). Defining the content of movement and gymnastic activities determines the path of development athletes and also defines (for caoches) performance criteria in each age category. The aim of disertation was to verify correspondence between published scientific theories and trainers experience of coaching using the Repertory Grid Technique. Abstract:
Recent literature suggests that classroom-based assessment should perhaps work from a different set of assumptions than large-scale testing. This idea is explored through RGT by asking how seven teachers, each with a unique approach to teaching and assessment, create their grades in a multi-faculty undergraduate EFL course in Japan. In an interview, the researcher asked each teacher to compare a sample of their own students achieving different grades, demonstrating the teachers’ constructs for teaching and assessment. These were then analyzed, and subject to a form of content analysis used in RGT. The process revealed that, although the assessment approach used by each teacher differed, the grade reflected similar underlying teaching values that seemed to be legitimate expressions of the framework provided by the institution.

Abstract:
The purpose of this chapter is to explore the role of trust or confidence through the managerial lens. The chapter aims to acquire empirical evidence regarding the importance of factors that play a role in fostering trust during procurement decision making exemplified through a New Zealand-owned company, ContainerCo. This exploratory study scrutinises trust as perceived by SME managers in the supply chain of logistics and procurement in New Zealand. It uses the repertory grid analysis and is based on two interviews conducted through the repertory grid technique, a semi-structured method. Although different in every company and country, trust plays a major role during the selection of suppliers. Factors such as reliability and value are regarded as the most important ones for choosing the right supplier in the case of ContainerCo.

Abstract:
Accreditation bodies such as the Engineering Council of South Africa and the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board have a group of courses that fall under the umbrella of Complementary Studies. This term is used to describe a set of engineering courses that include knowledge areas other than the more common mathematical sciences, natural sciences, engineering sciences, design and synthesis, and workintegrated learning. Studies have shown that engineering educators sometimes view these courses negatively. They are seen as distracting the focus of the students on the so-called technical courses, which the educators feel are more important. This paper reports on a research study that explored the way that engineering educators make sense of complementary studies courses within an industrial engineering curriculum. The repertory grid technique was used to explore complementary studies courses when compared to other engineering courses within the same curriculum. The relationships between elements and constructs in the grids were analysed using the repertory grid techniques of principal component analysis and cluster analysis. What became clear was that while most of the educators interviewed did recognise complementary studies courses as different to courses considered as core or technical, what made them different was very unclear. Each educator had a very different conception of what defines, differentiates or constitutes a complementary studies course. This range of variation may go some way to explaining why complementary courses seem out of place in engineering programs by educators and students alike.

Human Factors/Ergonomics (HF/E) practices in aviation generally focus on the system’s functional features like human performance, human error, workload, and situation awareness, without considering the emotional aspects of the interaction. However, there is a shift from a cognitive perspective to an affective one, which concerns promoting pleasure instead of just preventing design deficiencies. While traditional human factors have focused on efficiency, usability, and safety, emerging approaches have also focused on product experience. There has been a growing interest in affect and pleasure in such areas as engineering design, psychology, neuroscience, human factors, and industrial design. This study aims to transfer these emerging approaches into aviation by determining the perceived affective qualities in a flight deck design. For this purpose, interviews were conducted with pilots by using the Repertory Grid Technique with Laddering Technique to elucidate how pilots experience a flight deck design. According to the results, 33 constructs were determined which show the qualities of attributes produced by flight deck and the affective states of pilots when these qualities are provided.

Abstract:
Cultural differences in the perception of products can be studied by using the Repertory Grid Technique (RGT) where the idiosyncratic views of individuals are studied. This study examines the perceptions and prioritization of attributes with regard to six existing vehicle cluster instrument designs with thirteen designers each from India and Germany along with thirteen non-designers each from India and Germany (i.e., comparing German designers with Indian non-designers and Indian designers with German non-designers). The elicited constructs from interviews using RGT were categorized according to Hassenzhal’s (2004) Pragmatic and Hedonic qualities and their subcategories. The categorized data was compared along three metrics of Dominance, Importance and Descriptive Richness. Comparing designers and non-designers across cultures indicated differences in perceptions owing to the cultural background and education in design. For example, German designers emphasized the pragmatic aspects in comparison to Indian non-designers. Alternatively, Indian designers placed more importance to the Identification aspects (ex., exclusive, premium, sporty, etc) when compared to German non-designers. The design implications of these findings provide hints to designers on how to go about designing for Indian and German audiences.
