Abstract:
Beginning with a survey of known Baudelaire settings, this chapter analyses the extent of reworkings of Baudelaire’s poetry, including those made by the poet himself, through the different editions of Les Fleurs du mal, and translations of his work beyond France. The rationale for the selected corpus of song settings is then outlined (focus on an important time period for transmission of Baudelaire’s poetry across Europe; analysis of groups of Baudelaire poems set to music by a given composer; focus on scores which converge around the mélodie genre). It explores definitions of a ‘song set’ as: (a) a looser grouping than the ‘song cycle’ of the German Lied tradition; and (b) shaped by both aesthetic and commercial concerns. These concerns influence the analysis which seeks to balance ‘quantifiable’ features of song settings against the challenges of evaluating songs which emerge from a given historical and cultural context.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses securitization requirements under Basel 3. The Basel 3 reforms have rewritten the capital treatment of securitisations. However this rewriting sits on top of some major restructuring of the regime effected by Basel 2.5. Given that the Basel Accord is intended to reflect credit risk, it might be expected that the rationale for a separate treatment of securitization exposures would have disappeared, and that exposures to securitization vehicles would be evaluated in exactly the same way as exposures to other types of vehicles, based on credit characteristics. However, the opposite is the case. The chapter begins with an explanation of securitization. It then discusses true sale and derecognition of assets, risk weighting of securitization exposures, weighting holdings of securitization positions, the internal ratings-based approach approach, and revolving credit securitizations.

Abstract:
This chapter is central to the volume’s chronological contentions, as its argument accounts for the specialized, one-dimensional Dibdin of ‘Tom Bowling’ that has endured into recent scholarship. Focusing on Dibdin’s posthumous reception, it examines the moral and rhetorical difficulties of repackaging Dibdin’s works for a Victorian sensibility; it explores the specifics of mid-century concert culture previously highlighted by Derek Scott and William Weber as central to changes in nineteenth-century taste and programming; and it develops the theme of nostalgia into a revelatory consideration of the relationship between new naval technologies, national pride, and military training, and the songs, people, and language of a remembered Napoleonic ‘golden age’—to which Dibdin proves to have been as central, in the Victorian imagination, as Nelson.

Abstract:
Song is a combination of elements, of which the outcome is not always stable. This chapter examines the nature of the bonds formed between poem and music by proposing a new ‘‘assemblage’’ model, which focuses on five key parameters: (a) metre/prosody; (b) form/structure; (c) sound properties/repetition; (d) semantics/word painting; (e) live performance options. This approach bridges methodological gaps exposed through an examination of existing models used in translation theory, adaptation theory, and word/music theory. The two stages in the assemblage model examine: (1) adhesion strength (how closely poem and music stick together); (2) accretion/dilution (how successful the song setting is). The phases of analysis factor in how song is a non-permanent form which goes through multiple iterations of repackaging, including different performances of the same song and different settings of the same poem.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the legacy of Henry Mancini. Mancini should be remembered for three contributions to popular culture: first the reinventing, the freshening of film scoring in the 1960s. Mancini offered to the young Kennedy-era generation his own bright and clear sophisticated style—as clean and courteous as mainstream pop, but as cool and knowing as modern jazz. His second contribution was his repackaging of the melodic material from those colorful scores into jazz-pop record albums for home listening (coinciding with the invention of the stereo vinyl disc and high-fidelity recording techniques) that put his memorable tunes and orchestral inventiveness directly into people's lives and gave him, unlike past film composers, fame under his own name. Third was his reintroduction of lyricism into popular music—of carefully composed, personally expressive, harmonically interesting melody writing that had flourished once, then dried up in the 1950s when a cold war reigned between capitalism and communism as between one war-torn generation and their anxious offspring.
