Abstract:
The volume of a 40 ft container is twice as large as that of a 20 ft container. However, the handling cost (loading, unloading, and transshipment) of a 40 ft container is much lower than twice the corresponding handling cost of two 20 ft containers. Enlightened by this observation, we propose a novel container routing with repacking problem in liner shipping, where two 20 ft containers can be repacked to a 40 ft container in order to reduce the handling cost. We develop a mixed-integer linear programming model that formulates the routing decisions and the repacking decisions in a holistic manner. An illustrative example is reported to demonstrate the applicability of the model. Results show that the benefit of repacking is the most significant when containers are transshipped several times.

Abstract:
This study proposes a novel efficient resource allocation mechanism for federated clouds, which takes the communication overhead into consideration, to improve system throughput and reduce resource repacking overhead in the auto-scaling mechanism. In general, when the amount of service requests increases, more and more resources are allocated to satisfy these requests. However, single cloud cannot provide unlimited services with limited physical resources; therefore, the federation of multiple clouds may be one possible solution. In the federated cloud environment, when the workload changes, the resource allocation mechanism could adopt vertical/horizontal scaling fashions to repack the required resource into virtual machines. In the vertical scaling approach, the resource allocation mechanism allocates more resources into virtual machines for improving virtual machine's capability. In the horizontal scaling approach, the resource allocation mechanism allocates more virtual machines for enhancing the virtual cluster's capability. However, frequent resource repacking may reduce the system performance. Therefore, in order to improve system throughput and reduce repacking overhead, the proposed mechanism captures the execution pattern of applications by the profiling system and the resource status by the monitoring system, and then allocates resources for configuring the virtual cluster. Performance for NAS Parallel Benchmarks is evaluated. Experimental results show that the authors' approach could reduce repacking overhead and improve system throughput by comparing two previous works.

Abstract:
With recent advances and cost reductions in next generation sequencing (NGS), the amount of genetic sequence data is increasing rapidly. However, before patient specific genetic information reaches its full potential to advance clinical diagnostics, the immense degree of genetic heterogeneity that contributes to human disease must be more fully understood. For example, although large numbers of genetic variations are discovered during clinical use of NGS, annotating and understanding the impact of such coding variations on protein phenotype remains a bottleneck (i.e. what is the molecular mechanism behind deafness phenotypes). Fortunately, computational methods are emerging that can be used to efficiently study protein coding variants, and thereby overcome the bottleneck brought on by rapid adoption of clinical sequencing. To study proteins via physics-based computational algorithms, high-quality 3D structural models are essential. These protein models can be obtained using a variety of numerical optimization methods that operate on physics-based potential energy functions. Accurate protein structures serve as input to downstream variation analysis algorithms. In this work, we applied a novel amino acid side-chain optimization algorithm, which operated on an advanced model of atomic interactions (i.e. the AMOEBA polarizable force field), to a set of 164 protein structural models implicated in deafness. The resulting models were evaluated with the MolProbity structure validation tool. MolProbity “scores” were originally calibrated to predict the quality of X-ray diffraction data used to generate a given protein model (i.e. a 1.0 Å or lower MolProbity score indicates a protein model from high quality data, while a score of 4.0 Å or higher reflects relatively poor data). In this work, the side-chain optimization algorithm improved mean MolProbity score from 2.65 Å (42nd percentile) to nearly atomic resolution at 1.41 Å (95th percentile). However, side-chain optimization with the AMOEBA many-body potential function is computationally expensive. Thus, a second contribution of this work is a parallelization scheme that utilizes nVidia graphical processing units (GPUs) to accelerate the side-chain repacking algorithm. With the use of one GPU, our side-chain optimization algorithm achieved a 25 times speed-up compared to using two Intel Xeon E5-2680v4 central processing units (CPUs). We expect the GPU acceleration scheme to lessen demand on computing resources dedicated to protein structure optimization efforts and thereby dramatically expand the number of protein structures available to aid in interpretation of missense variations associated with deafness.

Abstract:
The process of managing a components warehouse of a production company is one of the most critical activities within the company itself that will affect the whole supply chain of the final product, being the components warehouse the beginning of the internal chain. Any difficulty that may occur on the correspondent activities may cause damaging impact on the forward processes. The continuous improvement of the most important process in the warehouse, the picking of components to fulfill orders from the production process, will bring benefits to the whole supply chain, while the work conditions are improved and waste eliminated, improving the efficiency of the process. Despite the importance of this specific process, there is the necessity of gathering information for all processes in the fastest way, to know how to act according to the needs. The lack of information could also bring negative consequences on other processes. The project here presented was developed in the components warehouse in Bosch Termotecnologia S.A., in Aveiro, being its purpose to show the importance of material and information movement, while improving the material and information flows. Different activities developed with the objective to improve those flows will be presented. The creation of new information flows on the receiving process, to gather information until this point not noticeable, to later on improve the process; the creation of areas for zone picking, to achieve a reduction in the number of workers associated to the process; the implementation of a repacking cell, to remove this activity from the picking process; and also all the activities linked to the priors, with the objective of achieving the proposed improvements.

Pietruszewski, Megan L. "Repackaging the Reach of Dreams| News Coverage of DACA Rescindment by Three National Newspapers on Twitter." Thesis, Michigan Technological University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10791647.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the frames used by three news organizations to cover the rescindment of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The rescindment of DACA was a pivotal transition period open to new immigration policy, and frames used in the news coverage of DACA are important as frames influence public opinion and possible future immigration policy. This study uses corpus linguistic methods and Van Gorp’s inductive framing analysis to explore how a complex political decision like DACA rescindment is covered in condensed news stories on Twitter as well as in full-length news articles. The Executive Critique frame, which places blame on President Trump as the problem of DACA rescindment, is the most common frame of both full-length news articles and Tweeted news articles. The Public Resistance frame, showing opposition to DACA rescindment by members of the public, is used more often in Tweeted news articles than in full-length news articles likely because of the salient visuals accompanying Tweeted news stories. Because visuals play a role in framing, journalists should capitalize on the potential of visuals in Tweeted news stories and balance using Human Interest frames and political frames like the Executive Critique frame. Using visuals to show DACA as human issue that promotes common ground, rather than as a divisive political issue, could be more productive in advancing comprehensive immigration reform, which failed in the six-month window President Trump gave to phase-out the DACA program.

Abahamye, Aloysius. "Cost comparison between repackaging bulk oral solid medicines and purchasing manufacturer-prepared patient-ready packs in the public sector in South Africa." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1020596.

Full text
Abstract:
In an attempt to have medicines available in patient-ready packs (PRPs) prior to the dispensing process, the provincial medicine depots in South Africa have, for many years, been repackaging bulk medicines into PRPs. Notwithstanding the fact that bulk medicine packages may have been the only packages available from the manufacturers to service the Primary Health Care (PHC) sector, the main aim of this process was to ensure that medicines were available in PRPs for dispensing to patients, thus, minimising the time spent on each prescription by the pharmacist, pharmacist’s assistant or Nurse. Currently, some medicines are being procured in PRPs from the manufacturers, whereas others are still procured in bulk packs which must be repackaged into PRPs. After a thorough literature search, it was established that, up until this point in time, no studies have been performed to compare costs of repackaged medicines from bulk packs with costs of medicines procured from manufacturers in PRPs. There was very scanty literature comparing the use of medicines procured either in PRPs or bulk packs. However, literature on cost comparison between repackaging and purchasing of commercially available manufacturer-prepared PRPs was not identified.
