Abstract:
Abstract

Coordination models and languages are relatively new methods in modeling component-based software systems. These models and languages separate the communication aspect of systems from their computation aspect, and hence enable the modeling of concurrent, distributed, and heterogeneous systems. In this thesis, our goal is to show that Reo, a channel-based exogenous coordination language, is powerful enough to be used in the area of workflow management. In order to achieve this goal, we consider a set of workflow control patterns. We implement each of these patterns in terms of a Reo circuit and show that these Reo circuits capture the behavior of the corresponding workflow control patterns. We believe that the patterns we choose in this thesis are enough to show the strength of Reo as a workflow language.

We explain our approach in four steps. In the first step, we specify the general definition of workflow control patterns in terms of some Point Interval Temporal Logic formulas. In the second step, we convert each PITL formula to a constraint automaton. In the third step, we implement each workflow control pattern by a Reo circuit; each Reo circuit consists of a set of components and a set of connectors that connect and coordinate those components and provide its behavior as a relation on timed data streams; a timed data stream is a twin pair of a data stream and a time stream. In the forth step, we compositionally derive the constraint automata of that Reo circuit and finally, in the fifth step, we show the equivalence of the two constraint automata.

Abstract:
The constituent operations of utterances are describes through the analysis of determiner an dof the particles which introduce phrases. The use of determiners does not point to a distinction between verbs and nouns as word classes, but defines a mode of referring to a notion, connected to a mode of functioning, either as predicate or as argument of the predicate. The general shapes of utterances conform to a limited number of basic patterns, characterized by the scheme of phrase-introductory particles, which determines the nature of the predicative relationship. Predicaton is based on three fundamental operations : identification, location, singling out an occurrence of process in relation to a subject

Abstract:
By 1855, most Maori still lived in a tribal setting, with little official Pakeha interference. This would have been as they expected, exercising their tino rangatiratanga, the chiefly rights guaranteed by the Treaty of Waitangi. However, their world was changing. In an effort to gain Pakeha goods, many Maori had entered the market economy. Most had converted to Christianity. Many could read and write. Some had sold land to accommodate the increasing numbers of Pakeha settlers. These trends gratified the government. It envisaged a New Zealand society dominated by Pakeha, in which European mores would be norm, and where its sovereignty, gained through the Treaty, would be substantive rather than nominal. At this time, the government pursued the policy of iwi kotahi (one people) or "amalgamation". This policy included the aim of elevating Maori socially and economically by extending to them the benefits of European civilisation. It sought too to encourage Maori to give up their "waste" lands for Pakeha settlement and for Maori to accept the rule of English law, and government authority. Ultimately the two races would become one society- a Pakeha-style society. The government used newspapers for disseminating its message to Maori, publishing the bi-lingual Maori Messenger-Te Karere Maori from January 1855 to September 1863. This thesis investigates the governments newspaper, plus other Maori language newspapers appearing within the period, printed by government agents, evangelical Pakeha, the Wesleyan Church, and the rival Maori government, the Kingitanga. The thesis not only looks at the impact of newspapers upon Maori society and politics at this time, but also how the newspapers portrayed the major social and political issues to Maori, including the first Taranaki War, the Kohimarama Conference, and the impending all-out war with the Kingitanga in Waikato. Using the newspapers as its major source, this thesis seeks to show how Maori might have understood the issues, and where possible, to allow them to respond in their own voices. We are fortunate that for almost a year the Kingitanga was able to publish its own views in Te Hokioi, thus allowing the anti-government Maori voice to articulate its stand. However, Maori opinion was hardly unitary. The Pakeha-run Maori language newspapers, through reports, reported speeches, and their corresponence columns, provide another set of Maori opinions, which show a variety of opinions on political and social issues. Many histories of this period focus on the tensions and conflicts between Crown and Maori, thus marginalising pro-government Maori, the waverers, and those who merely wanted to keep trouble from their door. This thesis endeavours to illuminate the whole colonial discourse as it appeared in the Maori language newspapers, providing as wide a range of opinions as possible.

With the popularization of the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV s) grows the need to use more sophisticated, robust and effective controllers in order to enhance its flight performance. This work aims the development of a non-linear control to be applied on a quadrotor aircraft, reducing flight time and improving system stability. The most commonly control technique used consist of a linear control law known as Proportional Integrate Derivative (PID), which provides stability and displacement for this class of system. However, this technique has certain limitations in performance by not considering construction parameters such as actuator s saturation and inertial moments, associated with the mass distribution of the system. Given this scenario, it is proposed the implementation of a control law, based on a formulation of optimal response time named Proximate Time Optimal Servomechanism (PTOS) to be applied on the degrees of freedom for rotation and translation of the vehicle. Furthermore, it is proposed a new approach to operate on a bidirectional displacement of a geo-referenced trajectory control system, based on the concept of optimal time, such as PTOS. Firstly it is presented the system dynamics, then a linearization, for purpose of control design, is achieved so that the proposed controllers are developed.

The following study is about the estimation of three-dimensional position of multiple objects captured in images in a stereo vision setting. The mathematical formalism begins with the representation of motion in Euclidean space. After that, the projection of the images is performed in an ideal camera perspective using homogeneous coordinates. This results in the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters, which are part of the camera calibration. From that, stereo vision is used to obtain three-dimensional position of objects that are captured in the images from two cameras. Thus, depths of various objects are obtained to reconstruct their positions. The validation of the proposed algorithms are made through an experiment built for this purpose. This experiment uses two cameras with semi-parallel views to the center. In the center of the environment there is a gimbal platform, which performs a uniform motion. Above, there is a plan with three white dots, simulating the objects position. This motion captures two images, which are processed by the proposed algorithm. The validation consists in making a comparison between the orientation planes of the gimbal servomotors and reconstruction objects.

Potgieter, Kim Carey. "Complexes of the ReO³⁺/Re(CO)₃cores with multidentate N,O-Donor chelates." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1225.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the coordination modes of multidentate N,O-donor ligands toward the [ReVO]3+ and fac-[ReI(CO)3]+ cores. The reactions of trans-[ReOX3(PPh3)2] (X = Cl, Br) with 4-aminoantipyrine (H2pap) were studied, and the complexes cis-[ReX2(pap)(H2pap)(PPh3)](ReO4) were isolated. The X-ray crystal structures show that both complexes display a distorted octahedral geometry around the central rhenium atom, and are mirror images of each other. The ligand pap is coordinated monodentately through the doubly deprotonated amino nitrogen as an imide, and H2pap acts as a neutral bidentate chelate, with coordination through the neutral amino nitrogen and the ketonic oxygen. The attempted synthesis of the potentially hexadentate Schiff base ligand 1,2-bis(2-{(Z)- [(2-hydroxyphenyl)imido]methyl}phenoxy)benzene from the condensation reaction of 2- (2-((2-aminophenoxy)methyl)benzyloxy)benzenamine and salicylaldehyde produced the zwitterion derivative (H2ono) of 2-{(Z)-[2-(hydroxyphenyl)imino]methyl}phenol. The tridentate Schiff bases (Z)-2-(2-aminobenzylideneamino)phenol (H3onn) and (Z)-2-(2- (methylthio)benzylideneamino)phenol (Hons) were prepared in a similar manner. The reaction of H2ono with trans-[ReOBr3(PPh3)2] surprisingly led to the isolation of the rhenium(III) complex [ReBr(PPh3)2(ono)], in which ono acts as a dianionic tridentate ligand. The reaction of H3onn with trans-[ReOBr3(PPh3)2] produced the imidorhenium(V) complex salt [ReBr(PPh3)2(onn)]Br, in which onn is coordinated as a trianionic tridentate imidoiminophenolate. The reaction of Hons with [Re(CO)5Br] led to the further decomposition of the Hons ligand, and the rhenium(I) product fac- [Re(CO)3(ons)(Hno)] (Hno = 2-aminophenol) was isolated, with ons coordinated as a monoanionic bidentate chelate (with a free SCH3 group), and Hno present as a neutral monodentate ligand with coordination through the amino nitrogen atom. Abstract Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University vi The reactions of the potentially hexadentate ligand N,N’-{ethane-1,2- diylbis[nitrilomethylidenebenzene-1,2-diyl]}bis(2-aminobenzeneimine) (H2ted) with rhenium(V) starting materials resulted in the decomposition of the H2ted molecule to give different coordinated multidentate ligands coordinated to the rhenium(V) centers. In the reaction of H2ted with trans-[ReOBr3(PPh3)2] in ethanol, the highly unusual ‘3+3’ complex cation [Re(tnn)(Htnn)]Br2 was isolated, in which tnn is coordinated as a tridentate imido-imino-amine, and Htnn is present as a tridentate monoanionic amidoimino- amine chelate (H2tnn = N-(2-aminophenylmethylidene)ethane-1,2-diamine). With trans-[ReO2(py)4]Cl as starting material, the neutral complex [ReO(dne)] was found, in which the tetradentate chelate dne acts as a triamido-imine. The reaction of cis- [ReO2I(PPh3)2] with H2ted led to the formation of the monocationic complex salt [ReO(ane)]PF6, with ane acting as a tetradentate dianionic diamidodiimine (H2ane = N,N’-bis[(2-aminophenyl)methylidene] ethane-1,2-diamine). The seven-coordinate rhenium(III) complex cation [Re(dhp)(PPh3)2]+ (H2dhp = 2,6-bis(2- hydroxyphenyliminomethyl)pyridine) was isolated as the iodide salt from the reaction of cis-[ReO2I(PPh3)2] with H2dhp in ethanol and as the perrhenate salt from the reaction of trans-[ReOBr3(PPh3)2] with H2dhp in methanol. Both products result from a disproportionation reaction with perrhenate also being produced in the process. The complex fac-[Re(CO)3(H2dhp)Br] was prepared from [Re(CO)5Br] and H2dhp in toluene, where the H2dhp ligand acts as a neutral bidentate NN-donor chelate. The metal is coordinated to three carbonyl donors in a facial orientation, to a neutral imino nitrogen, a pyridinic nitrogen and a bromide.

Objectives: To evaluate the executive functions of air traffic controllers (ATCO) and relate them to characteristics of professional activity, such as length of service, technical qualification and work shifts. Additionally, to evaluate stress and excessive daytime sleepiness in ATCO, identifying the impact of these variables on attention activity. Methods: Fifty-two ATCO participated, based at 3 air traffic control units (A, B and C). Sample selection adopted a non-probabilistic convenience approach with sequential selection. Results are presented as descriptive statistics using absolute and relative distribution (n-%), as well as by measures of central tendency and variability, with the distribution of data evaluated using the Shapiro?Wilk test. Pearson's chi-squared (?2) or Fisher's exact test was used to compare between qualitative variables. The Mann-Whitney or Student t test was applied for comparison of continuous variables between two independent groups, and One-way Analysis of Variance with post-hoc Tukey for comparison between three or more groups. Instruments: Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), Diffuse Attention Test -TEDIF-III, Focused Attention Test -TECON-III, Letter-Number Sequencing -WAIS III, Digit Span -WAIS III, Matrix Reasoning -WAIS III, Lipp Inventory of Stress Symptoms for Adults (ISSL-Lipp), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and Questionnaire applied to the ATCO. Results: The ATCO presented mean scores above the population mean for assessment of cognitive flexibility, strategic planning and ability to generate solutions, especially among the group of controllers with 0-5 years of service, whose scores were statistically significant. Considering the Digits, Letter-Number Sequencing and Matrix Reasoning subsets, the ATCO presented weighted scores above the mean, indicating efficient performance in working memory, visual information processing and abstract reasoning. The classification of average and below average prevailed in the focused attention evaluation, with these rates being within the population mean. In the diffuse attention test, they presented an increasing growth between the mean number of correct responses and time of task performance, implying an ability to maintain complex diffuse attention, efficient control of interferences and absence of impairment due to time pressure. Only 16% of the ATCO presented stress symptomatology, with a predominance of physical symptoms (62%). In the evaluation of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), statistical significance was identified between sleep and place of work. The ATCO with positive EDS scores worked rotating shifts that included the nighttime period. Conclusion: The executive functioning of ATCO is not influenced by shift work, technical qualification or length of service. Executive functioning is associated with the successful performance of key cognitive resources, such as memory, attention abstract reasoning, planning and flexibility to change.

The aim of this dissertation was to use current technology to collect environmental quantities of forests to perform a periodic monitoring that would aid in preventing the advance of degradation and deforestation of the urban forest remnants of Campinas, more specifically Mata do Quilombo, located in the Bar?o Geraldo district. The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in the diagnosis and preservation of this urban forest remnant provided a low-cost method and a non-invasive monitoring. The strategy was to use the UAV with embedded remotely-activated electronic sensors in order to collect units of environmental quantities such as the location of clearings within the forest created by deforestation, air temperature and humidity, luminosity and the georeferenced location of the study site. In addition to the UAV technology, wireless technology was also used to communicate with various frequency bands, thus validating the simultaneous operation of the embedded sensors without any interference between them or external sources. After the data was collected, the objective was to submit it to an outlier verification method and make them available in a monitoring center, so that the user could later save this information in a remote access system known as supervisory system.

We propose a multi-resolution, coarse-to-fine approach for stereo matching, where the first matching happens at a different depth for each pixel. The proposed technique has the potential of attenuating several problems faced by the constant depth algorithm, making it possible to reduce the number of errors or the number of comparations needed to get equivalent results. Several experiments were performed to demonstrate the method efficiency, including comparison with the traditional plain correlation technique, where the multi-resolution matching with variable depth, proposed here, generated better results with a smaller processing time

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to rediscover an epistemological awareness to help understand the information principles for current criminal trials, with special reference to researching trial truth and the mechanisms that are adopted to prevent judicial errors. The examination is divided in three chapters. The first contains a historic analysis of the canon of in dubio pro reo, from late Roman law to current day; the current formulation of the ancient canon is given by presumed innocence as given at art. 27, paragraph 2 of the Constitution, which tells the Judge how to behave in the case of doubt, and gives a clear definition of how the trial should be understood. In fact, we can see that this particular principle is acknowledged in the accusatory systems that have been imposed in those countries or moments when liberal instances circulated; however it has been refused by the inquisitorial systems, that have always reflected an authoritarian, if not absolute, power. Presumed innocence is imposed above all as a "judgement rule", which means it becomes important when the Judge is called on to assess the proof and consequently pronounce the defendant's guilt or otherwise; this is why we considered it opportune to trace back to the origins of the question, dedicating a large part of this research - the second and third chapters - to analysing the evolution of the concept of proof in history. This excursus has shown that in legal culture two concepts of proof can be identified. The first is the traditionally defined "classic concept of proof" which was created and developed - in accusatory systems typical of ancient Greece and Republican Rome - through the theory of "signs" of the Attic orators, the Aristotelian theories, and the theorisation of status by Hermagoras, right up to the further developments brought by Roman culture to the Greek heritage. The passage has then been analysed from this concept to the one that was affirmed by applying scientific methods to legal practice. After a few brief comments on the trials by ordeal and medieval methods, which belong to the transition phase from one concept of proof to another, the modern concept of proof has been analysed, which was immediately given substance in the system of legal proof and inquisitorial type trials, characterised by their strongly rational method. Through a comparative approach, the method was then examined that connotes the modern concept of proof in antithesis to the classic concept. In particular, evidence has been given of how there is the acceptance of a different meaning of the term probability at the basis of the distinction de qua on an epistemological level. In fact the term can have two meanings; it can designate the level of confirmation of a hypothesis relative to certain proof or the relative frequency of an event in a long series of events. The first definition was historically accepted in the classic concept, where the proof was taken as argumentum, or rather as that quid through which something that was unknown became known thanks to the argumentation. The second definition is constantly applied in the modern concept of proof, traced back to the concept of induction elaborated by Jeremy Bentham. This way we have witnessed a changing perspective and objective of the proof, through the progressive affirmation of an acceptance of probability intended as id quod plerumque accidit in objective and statistic terms, i.e. probability hypostatized to certainty. But if legal proof represented the acknowledgement at legislation level of the statistic-objective concept of probability, it is easy to understand the subsequent and absolute irrelevance of the debate phase, in purely trial terms, as it is reduced to simply reproposing the results of the research by the Public Prosecutor, the only uncontested dominus of the trial. In the light of the two conceptions of traditionally recognised proof, this research then focused on analysing the canon of in dubio pro reo, trying to understand, through further analysis, whether the acceptance in our legal system of the principle in question, constitutes the reflection of adherence to the classic or modern conception of proof, in epistemological terms. Consequently, only when the proof is logically configured as an argumentum is there any point, on one hand, of discussing the results of the Public Prosecutor's investigations, with the aim of reviewing them in the light of the various reconstruction hypotheses suggested by the other parties in the trial; on the other hand, doubting the conclusions that are reached by a first and, eventually, a second judge, considering the defendant innocent until finally sentenced. But if, as happened in the regime of legal proof, the elements that are gathered unilaterally and in secret by the Prosecution are identified with the "facts to be proved" in relation to the believed responsibility of the person and, therefore, "certainty" regarding the prosecution thesis, the concept of doubt is not only rationally incompatible with the structure of this system generally, but it is even more so after sealing a first or second degree sentence. At this point it would be easy to object that in a criminal trial the stakes are high because, without any false rhetoric, the judge effectively decides about a person's life, without forgetting that in criminal trials there is also a "superior" interest: that of the State to punish the criminal and protect the public from criminality. In this aspect, we could have the impression that including a classic method and epistemology in such a context is riskier than an abstract and preformed prevision of a system of regulations that control the judge's work, especially in probatory proceedings. With regards to this, it must be pointed out that if a system of free conviction contrasts with one of legal proof, it does not contrast with the legal prescription of the proof method: in the way that freedom of conviction does not mean arbitration, in the same way the legal proof method is not a synonym for inquisitorial logic. Therefore a proof method is necessary, but at the same time it must not imply a reduction of the proof to a preformed and predefined definition. In fact, it is in the light of this tension that the presumed innocence has a cardinal role in our system. In my opinion, this principle involves numerous profiles in criminal trials and has a balancing function between inquisitorial and accusatorial instances, because of its dual connotation. At an epistemological level, the presence of doubt about a person's guilt until the final sentence is compatible with the qualification of the proof as argumentum, or rather, with a judgement that is imposed as the dialectic research for a result and not as a trial crystallisation of a result that has already been obtained elsewhere; in purely trial terms however, the canon in question is imposed as a judgement rule that tells the judge how to behave in case of doubt; if there is no proof, if it is contradictory or insufficient, the judge must absolve the person, there is no other choice. This imposition has become fixed and definite in the Criminal Procedure Code, at art. 533, paragraph 1, in the reformulated form given by art. 5 of Law no. 46 on 20 February 2006, which establishes that "the judge pronounces the sentence if the defendant is guilty of the crime beyond all reasonable doubt". Therefore on one hand this indicates that if there is any doubt the defendant is absolved - the probatory method - on the other hand, it suggests that there can be doubt in our system, with all the resulting implications at epistemological level. Finally, the principle of presumed innocence allows, by the elaboration of a legal proof method, revaluating the application of scientific knowledge to the trial on the condition, however - which must be underlined - that the awareness of the excesses that rationality and science can lead to, delimits their effectiveness in the proof method, without any unscrupulous and dangerous attempt to extend them to the proof itself.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a storybook retell technique to facilitate vocabulary acquisition in children educated in Māori immersion class settings. A second aim of the study was to explore the cultural responsiveness and pedagogical appropriateness of the intervention approach and the importance of relationship building (whakawhanaungatanga) to successful interventions. Nine children participated in the study. These children (aged between 5 and 8 years) were recruited from two Kura Kaupapa Māori settings in differing urban areas in New Zealand. The children entered the study on a rolling basis in groups of three. The first three participants to enter the study were recruited from the one classroom on the basis of their demonstrating specific language impairment (SLI). The second group of three participants attended a different classroom and these participants were recruited into the study as a result of identified delayed reading development (RD). The third group of three participants from a third classroom was selected as the participants exhibited typical spoken and written language development (TD). The intervention technique utilized in this study adopted a structured approach to teaching the meaning of pre selected vocabulary items that were embedded in class story books. Three different books were selected and each book was read by the teacher to the whole class three times during a one week period. The target vocabulary was highlighted each time it occurred in the story through the following techniques: an adult definition was given for the word, an antonym or synonym was given, and the meaning was acted out by the teacher or the picture detailing the meaning of the word in the book was highlighted. A single subject research design using pre-intervention, intervention and post intervention assessment probes for the target vocabulary items was employed to examine the effectiveness of the intervention in teaching the children the targeted vocabulary. Teacher interviews were also carried out to assess the appropriateness of the intervention in relation to the philosophy of the Kura Kaupapa and its pedagogical appropriateness and cultural responsiveness. The results suggested that the children in all three groups (SLI, RD and TD) made moderate gains in the acquisition of the target vocabulary supporting the hypothesis that targeting vocabulary in story book retelling at a whole class level will lead to acquisition of the vocabulary by the participants' exposed to the intervention. However, using a Two Standard Deviation method to evaluate the significance of each participant's change, the gains made for the RD and SLI participants were not significant. The TD participants did demonstrate a significant difference in the number of words correct. The teachers of the participants involved in the study reported positively on the effectiveness and appropriateness of the intervention for inclusion within the Kura Kaupapa and classroom programme. In particular, teachers' reported that as the intervention included each child in the class (as opposed to a withdrawal intervention model) the intervention was more appropriate for the philosophy of the Kura Kaupapa. The teachers' also reported the effectiveness of the intervention for the development of collaboration and relationship building between the teacher and researcher (a speech-language therapist. The data showed that the intervention investigated in this study was culturally responsive and pedagogically appropriate. It could be included as a component of the class programme as it was responsive to the philosophy of the Kura Kaupapa. The participants' did make moderate gains in the acquisition of the vocabulary (although not at a level to be considered significant for children with delayed development). Further research is necessary to explore the effectiveness of what may potentially be a useful intervention to enhance vocabulary development for children in Kura Kaupapa.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the experiences of European New Zealanders who have learnt te reo Māori and how through their learning they have gained a better understanding of what it means to be Pākehā in New Zealand. This thesis looks at the reasons why European New Zealanders want to learn te reo Māori (chapter 5); experiences from learning te reo Māori and being involved with Māori culture within both te ao Māori and te ao Pākehā are also discussed (chapter 6). The concept of a Pākehā identity, one that involves a relationship with te ao Māori is also examined (chapter 7). The use of the term Pākehā by European New Zealanders is a rather recent phenomenon. The thesis endeavours to discover differences between those European New Zealanders who do and do not identify with the term 'Pākehā'. Which New Zealanders identify with the term 'Pākehā', and the examination of who finds the term derogatory is also discussed (chapter 4). Since European contact with Māori, fluency in te reo Māori in New Zealand has dramatically declined. As a background to the research undertaken here, this study also reviews the history of te reo Māori since European contact and the revitalisation efforts made by Māori to maintain the language. The exploration of the idea that te reo Māori can be the basis of a new national identity that all New Zealanders can share is also discussed (Chapter 2). This chapter also explores the origin and meaning of the term Pākehā, and the creation of popular usage of the term among European New Zealanders.

This paper aims at analyzing the creative judicial interpretation made by criminal court judges when solving cases. Due to complex changes in society, these decisions are no longer aligned with the positive norm and quite often sound rather unfair. This research also analyzes the limits of such interpretation, be them intrinsic - imposed by the core principles of criminal law - or extrinsic - arising from the Brazilian constitutional order, which determines the separation of Powers. Therefore, following an introduction to the rationalist parameter of current legal science, we study, in the first part, the current sources and principles that inform and limit the Brazilian criminal law, which are essential to understand both its purpose and function. The second part analyzes the complex character of contemporary society, which contributes to the increase in various forms of violence. This complexity poses some questions regarding the existence and viability of legal certainty, which becomes a volatile concept in a scenario where social acceleration lends great speed to the phenomena of life. In the third and last part, we focus on the position occupied by creative judges in the Brazilian constitutional system, deepening the debate on the democratic nature of their role as protagonists rather than a "mouth of the law". Still, we scrutinize the way magistrates must act before this reality and, having at hand the sources studied, exercise their creativity in order not to lose sight of the real purpose of criminal law, expressed in its principles, which is to protect the defendant's constitutional guarantees. Finally, we present a brief practical analysis of five precedents of the Supreme Court in which non-traditional methods of interpretation and application of the criminal standard norm were adopted, for the benefit of the accused.

Abstract:
The reflectivity of large single crystals of protonated and deuterated (TMTSF)₂Re0₄ and (TMTSF)₂BF₄ has been measured from ≈ 30 cm-¹ to ≈ 8000 cm-¹ using a Bruker IFS 113V Fourier Transform Interferometer for E
a and E
b' above and below the metal--insulator transitions at 177 K and 39 K respectively. The infrared powder absorption spectra of protonated and deuterated (TMTSF)₂Re0₄ has been measured from 200 cm˗¹ to 2000 cm˗¹. The Kramers-Kronig optical conductivity has been calculated from the reflectivity using Drude extrapolations to high frequency. The results for the conductivity for E
a show a one-dimensional density of states, characteristic of a one-dimensional semiconductor with strong electron-phonon coupling, with the vibrations appearing as resonances below the gap and as antiresonances above. The E
b' conductivity is smaller by almost two orders of magnitude than that for E
a, but displays the same semiconducting behavior. The phonons active in the E
b' polarization appear only as resonances. A normal coordinate analysis has been performed for protonated and deuterated TMTSF⁰ and TMTSF⁺. The results have been used to infer the frequencies of vibration and the deuterium shifts of TMTSF⁺⁰ׄ⁵. The molecular frequencies of vibration have been assigned on the basis of their observed frequencies and optical polarization, as well as their deuterium shifts. Some external phonons have also been assigned. The observation that many of the internal and external vibrations are split is due to the eightfold increase in the size of the unit cell (and subsequent reduction of the Brillouin zone) below the metal-insulator transition. The optical properties of the semiconducting state have been modelled for a one--dimensional molecular conductor with a twofold-commensurate charge-density wave, which accurately reproduces the effects of the lattice dimerization and the potential due to the anion chains. The calculations yield the electron-molecular-vibrational coupling constants for the totally symmetric a[formula omitted] vibrations of the TMTSF molecule. The model also yields a transfer integral of 1400 cm-¹ for both materials and semiconducting energy gaps of 2Δ = 1700 cm˗¹ and 2Δ = 1120 cm˗¹ for (TMTSF)₂ReO₄ and (TMTSF)₂BF₄ respectively. The optical conductivity in the E
b' polarization has been discussed in -terms of a two-dimensional band structure with anisotropic transfer integrals. The band structure calculations show the same general features as the measured spectra.

A novel slit-die flow cell is presented for the evaluation of extrusion thermo-mechanical history on the flow character of polymers. The rheo-optical concept is claimed once both flow-birefringence and rheological character of polystyrene are probed during the process. To accomplish this task, three pressure gauges are flush-mounted along the channel of the slit-die to determine the pressure drop of the flowing polymer. Moreover, borosilicate optical windows are adjusted into two different sites in-between the pressure transducers. Thus, one could assess the rheo-optical responses at two different entrance lengths. When studying polystyrene melt, the flow birefringence measurements showed different molecular orientation levels along the channel axial direction, being slightly lower in the second section next to the slit die outlet. The viscosity values measured in-process were lower at the second section of the slit-die. In addition, they were well below that calculated from rotational rheometry. By following the time-temperature superposition, the melt temperatures assessed in real time were found to be considerably higher than those chosen as the set points. This was ascribed to viscous dissipation generated mainly at the extrusion barrel boundaries. The real time assessment of polymer melt by the use of thermocouples agreed with estimated ones from reduced variables method. On the other hand, temperature increments were found to be a function of the mass flow. This is not taken into account on bench techniques due to isothermal flow assumption. Rheo-optical measurements carried out at both steady state and transient mass flow procedure showed that polystyrene behaves as a thermo-rheological material and, apparently, the stress optical rule holds for the processing conditions investigated given the independence of the flow-birefringence versus stress curve slopes with feed rate and temperature set-points.

Abstract:
The beliefs that teachers have about teaching and learning have an influence on the practices that teachers implement. This is particularly relevant, although not exclusively, to teaching practices that meet the needs of Māori students in our bicultural learning environments of New Zealand. There is a growing amount of research to support the use of student voice data, the benefits of which can be seen at a school level, at the classroom teacher level as well as for the individual students themselves. This research project focused on exploring the impact of students sharing their thoughts and opinions about their learning, (i.e.: student voice data) on influencing teachers’ beliefs about teaching and learning. In doing so it explores effective facilitation of this process in a bicultural learning environment. In particular it investigates the potential of a combination of specific tools, notably student focus groups and coaching conversations with teachers to influence teachers’ beliefs. This study took place in two low decile schools in Christchurch. It involved focus groups of Māori and non-Māori primary-aged students, alongside teacher reflective interviews being conducted on repeated visits. Its findings identified approaches for accessing authentic student voice in a bicultural learning environment. The thoughts and opinions shared by Māori students highlighted a focus on their own learning as well as celebrating their culture. Teachers reacted to student voice by making connections to their classroom programmes, and by accepting or dismissing more provocative statements. These reactions by teachers helped emphasize the most helpful methods for reflecting on this data. Their reflections, used alongside a specially designed ‘Teacher Belief Gathering Tool’, ascertained that teachers’ beliefs were both reaffirmed and changed through guided reflection and coaching conversations on student voice data. Teachers’ knowledge of effective teaching and learning, their motivation for changing their teaching practices, as well as witnessing success were all considerable factors in teachers changing their beliefs.

Abstract:
Māori education has grown out of a long and varied history of Māori engagement with Western forms of schooling. Full immersion Māori learning environments such as kura kaupapa Māori emerged from a background of colonial Mission schools, Native Schools, and evolving assimilation and integration educational policies. It is the subsequent loss of language, continual Māori school underachievement and Māori struggles for indigenous self-determination that have provided the conditions in which the development of Kaupapa Māori otherwise known as Māori medium education has taken place. Māori medium education has emerged in varying forms and differing levels of Māori language immersion, although the principles and philosophies of these environments remain particularly Māori orientated. Kaupapa Māori education is largely built upon whānau aspirations and is set within a Māori framework of learning and Māori language teaching. In addition to full immersion Māori schools there are other classroom settings that offer varied levels of Māori language instruction. Some of these classrooms have been established in English medium schools, creating a bilingual context. While full immersion schools focus on the breadth of all things Māori, bilingual schools may have a slightly different focus. May, Hill and Tiakiwai (2006 p.1) in their review of Bilingual Education in Aotearoa explain it as an area of instruction where school subjects are taught in two languages (Māori and English) and students become fluent orators and writers in both. Little is understood about the dynamics of partial immersion programmes and the contribution these settings make to Māori language and cultural knowledge acquisition and to wider self-determination aspirations of Māori. Drawing from the contributed insights of teaching staff, whānau and other stakeholders linked to partial immersion education, this research considers these settings to better understand the relationship between language acquisition and cultural knowledge attainment. A synergy of Kaupapa Māori theory with a qualitative interpretivist approach has guided the research process. The rationale for the research was to strengthen cultural knowledge and cultural aspirations which made it appropriate to use Kaupapa Māori principles as a foundation of which to develop the research. As research is currently limited in this respect a more extensive understanding of the teaching and learning programmes within a partial immersion classroom may be paramount to their continuation and success. Key findings emerged from the participant interviews and clear characteristics of these environments developed: Whānau (family), te reo Māori me ōna tikanga (Māori language and cultural customs) Māori values, and Māori pedagogies. The participants talked about many features particular to partial immersion education that linked to these four themes. The themes were further analysed to find key positive outcomes of these settings. A strong sense of pride in identity, particularly Māori identity and Māori succeeding as Māori were the two key positive outcomes that emerged from the participant data.

Abstract:
There is a body of international research evidence that argues that as children learn and develop their language they are learning about and developing their perception of their socio-cultural environment. In turn as they interact within a specific context the nature of that context stimulates language. However there has been little comprehensive research carried out on the language learning practices of the children in Kōhanga Reo and in their home since the movement first began. This research explores the role that the whānau (family) plays in the construction of language development with the Kōhanga Reo child in their socio-cultural context. It critically examines the processes of language socialisation within the cultural base of Te Kōhanga Reo and in the child's home. The study's theoretical framework adopts a socio-cultural approach (Rogoff, 1995, 2003) couched within a bioecological model of whānau development (Bronfenbrenner, 1979, 2005). This framework assisted the researcher in unfolding the multi layers of social, cultural, political and spiritual influences on whānau development during the child's co-construction of Māori language within his/her two main settings Te Kōhanga Reo and home. From this premise a hypothesis was proposed, that the cultural base in Te Kōhanga Reo results in socio-cultural interactions (whanaungatanga) within the home and kōhanga that support the construction of language development as defined by tikanga Māori. The study examines the kaupapa (philosophy) of the Kōhanga Reo movement, its cultural base, the socio-cultural interactions that take place namely whanaungatanga, and the child's construction of te reo Māori (the Māori language). However discussions with whānau, recordings of the children's Māori language development, the cultural interactions between children and whānau soon highlighted the dynamic and passionate contribution that whānau, both home and kōhanga, make to their children's learning.

Regarding the studies about the behavior of the consumer and crisis management reflects the numerous contributions of social sciences and humanities. The connection of these two areas of understandings was possible through the observation of experiences the consumers lived through, during the recent Brazilian aviation crisis, which made it possible to understand the inconstant trust of the executives after the crisis. The dissertation contextualizes how the executives from Rio de Janeiro think and act, compounding an extremely singular vision regarding their perceptions after the Brazilian aviation crisis. To support the field work expost facto, the theoretical reference includes authors linked to the marketing of services, consumer behavior, consumption and citizenship, trust and crisis management. From the economic and business point of view, the organizations understand the relevance of the study regarding trust when confirmed that the consumers want to trust their suppliers and have the expectation that the products, goods and services be unswerving to the ideas and aspirations that are developed in their lives. The elements of trust are classified into: i) factors linked to the authors decision to trust and support the singular mixture of personality, culture and experience; ii) situational factors that have to do with the aspects of specific situations and relationships between the parties. The work demanded: i) exploratory field work, ii) data collection from secondary sources (print and electronic media), iii) official information divulged by the institutions involved, iv) interviews with time sensitive users of a hypothetical deduction character with a qualitative approach, necessary to attract the perspective subjects in the investigation ex-post facto. The Contents Analysis method allowed to understand the world of the significant of the actions and human relations in their overall situation. In exploring a critical situation such as the one faced by the Brazilian aerial blackout , the work witnessed how the aviation crisis, complex and long-lasting, weakened institutions and the consumers belief was greatly affected.

A Quadrotor is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) equipped with four rotors distributed on a simple mechanical "X"form structure. The aim of this work is to build and stabilize a Quadrotor aircraft in the roll, pitch and yaw angles at a certain altitude. The stabilization control approach is based on a transformation in the input variables in order to perform a decoupled control. The proposed strategy is based on breaking the control problem into two hierarchical levels: A lower level, object of this work, maintains the desired altitude an angles of the vehicle while the higher level establishes appropriate references to the lower level, performing the desired movements. A hardware and software architecture was specially developed and implemented for an experimental prototype used to test and validate the proposed control approach

Greve, Benjamin K. "Exploring the thermal expansion of fluorides and oxyfluorides with ReO₃-type structures: from negative to positive thermal expansion." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/43753.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the thermal expansion and high pressure behavior of some materials with the ReO₃ structure type. This structure is simple and has, in principle, all of the features necessary for negative thermal expansion (NTE) arising from the transverse thermal motion of the bridging anions and the coupled rotation of rigid units; however, ReO₃ itself only exhibits mild NTE across a narrow temperature range at low temperatures. ReO₃ is metallic because of a delocalized d-electron, and this may contribute to the lack of NTE in this material. The materials examined in this thesis are all based on d⁰ metal ions so that the observed thermal expansion behavior should arise from vibrational, rather than electronic, effects. In Chapter 2, the thermal expansion of scandium fluoride, ScF₃, is examined using a combination of in situ synchrotron X-ray and neutron variable temperature diffraction. ScF₃ retains the cubic ReO₃ structure across the entire temperature range examined (10-1600 K) and exhibits pronounced negative thermal expansion at low temperatures. The magnitude of NTE in this material is comparable to that of cubic ZrW₂O₈, which is perhaps the most widely studied NTE material, at room temperature and below. This is the first report of NTE in an ReO₃ type structure across a wide temperature range. Chapter 3 presents a comparison between titanium oxyfluoride, TiOF₂, and a vacancy containing titanium hydroxyoxyfluoride, Tiₓ(O/OH/F)₃. TiOF₂ was originally reported to adopt the cubic ReO₃ structure type under ambient conditions, therefore the initial goal for this study was to examine the thermal expansion of this material and determine if it displayed interesting behavior such as NTE. During the course of the study, it was discovered that the original synthetic method resulted in Tiₓ(O/OH/F)₃, which does adopt the cubic ReO₃ structure type. The chemical composition of the hydroxyoxyfluoride is highly dependent upon synthesis conditions and subsequent heat treatments. This material readily pyrohydrolyizes at low temperatures (~350 K). It was also observed that TiOF₂ does not adopt the cubic ReO₃ structure; at room temperature it adopts a rhombohedrally distorted variant of the ReO₃ structure. Positive thermal expansion was observed for TiOF₂ from 120 K through decomposition into TiO₂. At ~400 K, TiOF₂ undergoes a structural phase transition from rhombohedral to cubic symmetry. High pressure diffraction studies revealed a cubic to rhombohedral phase transition for Tiₓ(O/OH/F)₃ between 0.5-1 GPa. No phase transitions were observed for TiOF₂ on compression. In Chapter 4, an in situ variable pressure{temperature diffraction experiment examining the effects of pressure on the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) for ScF₃ and TaO₂F is presented. In the manufacture and use of composites, which is a possible application for low and NTE materials, stresses may be experienced. Pressure was observed to have a negligible effect on cubic ScF₃'s CTE; however, for TaO₂F the application of modest pressures, such as those that might be experienced in the manufacture or use of composites, has a major effect on its CTE. This effect is associated with a pressure-induced phase transition from cubic to rhombohedral symmetry upon compression. TaO₂F was prepared from the direct reaction of Ta₂O₅ with TaF₅ and from the digestion of Ta₂O₅ in hot hydro uoric acid. The effects of pressure on the two samples of TaO₂F were qualitatively similar. The slightly different properties for the samples are likely due to differences in their thermal history leading to differing arrangements of oxide and uoride in these disordered materials. In Chapter 5, the local structures of TiOF₂ and TaO₂F are examined using pair distribution functions (PDFs) obtained from X-ray total scattering experiments. In these materials, the anions (O/F) are disordered over the available anion positions. While traditional X-ray diffraction provides detailed information about the average structures of these materials, it is not suffcient to fully understand their thermal expansion. Fits of simple structural models to the low r portions of PDFs for these materials indicate the presence of geometrically distinct M{X{M (M = Ti, Ta; X = O, F) linkages, and a simple analysis of the TaO₂F variable temperature PDFs indicates that these distinct links respond differently to temperature.

One of the major organizational challenges for airlines is to maintain the continuity of their operations, copying with problems involving airport closures, infrastructure issues and unscheduled maintenance events. To deal with these contingencies, companies use Control Centers of Operations (CCOs), whose responsibility involves planning and monitoring the execution of planning their flight schedules while attempting to accommodate the variability encountered. This type of activity creates the need for the system to be resilient, that is, the ability to adapt system operation before, during or after some change or disorder in order to maintain expected operations, under expected and unexpected contexts. The objective of this study is to propose indicators of resilience that aim to help manage the main contingencies experienced by the CCO, increasing the operational capacity of the planned operations, even in the face of unexpected situations. This research presents a single case study of a regular air transport company that operates around 800 daily flights throughout Brazil and in some international destinations. A systemic mapping of the main contingencies experienced by CCO were performed using the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM). Data was gathered by means of interviews, in locus observations and analysis of technical documents. Two indicators of resilience have been proposed that have the potential to indicate where and when the system defenses should concentrate their efforts in order to avoid contingencies. The use of FRAM and the principles of Resilience Engineering (ER) have shown promise for the identification of resilience indicators, and the proposed method may be used in future research that seeks to identify indicators of resilience in complex sociotechnical systems.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to know the structure, floristic composition and environment-vegetation relationship in communities of different woody vegetation types of the Cerrado. The fragments are located in the Experimental Farm in Curvelo Moura, MG (cerrado sentido restrito ? 18,84? S e 44,39??W; cerrad?o-cerrado sentido restrito transition ? 18?82??S e 44?25??W; average elevation of 715 m), climate under the K?ppen Aw and on substrate of dystrophic and acids. The forest inventory was conducted by means of rectangular permanent quadrats (20 ? 50 m) with an area of ??1000 m?. For natural regeneration (RN), we used sub?-plots with an area of ??100 m? (2 ? 50 m) installed in the center of each plot. Thirty sample units were installed in the area of ??cerrado sensu stricto (fifteen to vegetation and fifteen adult to RN) and ten units in the area of ??dense cerrad?o-cerrado sentido restrito transition. The adult compartment was represented by all individuals living within the plots with diameter at soil height (DSH - diameter to 0.3 m from ground level) >?5.0 cm, and in sub-quadrats, natural regeneration (RN) composed of alive individuals with long stem >?10?cm e DSH 4.0 cm). Environmental variables were collected for each plot to subsidize direct gradient analysis by means of two arrays (vegetation and environment). Were performed analyzes of alpha and beta temporal diversity (in cerrado sensu stricto between adults and RN). It was recorded a total of 127 species in three areas, and identified 39 families and 89 genera identified. The canonical correspondence analysis indicated significant correlations between spatial distribution of species abundance with some environmental variables for four of the five tests performed (two for the adult compartment and three classes for the classes of RN). Stand out as a function of density in the entire sample, gender Annona, Byrsonima, Erythroxylum, Myrcia and Qualea, and the specie Magonia pubescens.

Abstract:
During the 1960’s Maori concerned about the state of te reo Maori lobbied the government to have te reo Maori included as a teaching subject in the New Zealand curriculum. In the early 1970’s they reaped the rewards of their hard fought efforts when te reo Maori became a taught subject in the New Zealand curriculum. However, even with te reo being taught in English medium schools, its use was still in decline creating even more anxiety about its survival. In the 1980’s Maori took the matter into their own hands and the birth of Maori medium early childhood education centres named Kohanga Reo (Language Nests) was the result. Shortly afterwards Maori medium primary schools (Kura Kaupapa Maori) emerged followed by Maori medium secondary schools (Wharekura). There was a ground swell of support for these community driven initiatives and it seemed te reo Maori would be returned from the brink of extinction. Even given the emergence of Maori medium educational facilities including Wananga (Tertiary Institutes), the majority of Maori students have remained in English medium education. After a respite of about twenty years it would seem that te reo Maori is once again on the decline. For many years kaiako reo Maori (Maori language teachers) in English medium secondary schools have grappled with the issue of high attrition rates from their senior te reo Maori programmes. This is a significant issue as 85 percent of akonga Maori (Maori students) still participate in the English medium education system. However this problem plagues not only akonga Maori but also those who are non Maori. Te reo Maori programmes in mainstream New Zealand schools are offered to akonga as optional subjects. While retention is relatively unproblematic for akonga in the junior levels of secondary schools (ages 13 to 14), it becomes a significant issue in the senior levels (ages 15 to 18) where attrition rates are considerably high. This research attempts to identify the factors that contribute to the high rates of attrition and offers some possible solutions to decreasing attrition rates amongst akonga reo Maori.

The prodigious US single-family housing market consists of roughly 80 million existing homes and of those, more than 14 million are currently being rented. This trillion-dollar rental market has traditionally been operated exclusively by mom and pop organizations, until now. Since the housing collapse began five years ago institutional investors began taking note of falling home prices and rising inventories of bank owned properties. Private equity giants like Blackstone and Colony Capital saw a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest at pennies on the dollar in a sector long regarded but never before accessible to large institutions. Reminiscent of California in the late 1840's, there was a massive rush West and South by firms looking to deploy billions of dollars of investment capital through the purchase of thousands of single-family homes. By the middle of 2013 nearly $20 billion had been raised or spent and more than 150,000 homes were in the hands of institutional investors. A new market was born and fast maturing. In the early days skeptics permeated the space while investors looked to further formalize the hundreds of millions already invested. By the end of 2013 three Real Estate Investment Trusts existed with a market capitalization exceeding $4 billion and the Blackstone Group finalized the formation of the world's first bond backed by single-family rental streams. Today analysts and investors disagree on what stage of maturity the single-family rental (SFR) exists. Specifically, there are those who see SFR as a new asset class advancing toward a double or triple digit billion market capitalization. On the other hand there are those who see these investments as nothing more than a short-term trade, destined to fade within the next few years. This contemporary thesis topic aims to shed light on the buy-to-rent strategy surrounding single-family home investors including tactics being adopted to garner the greatest rewards. Furthermore, the thesis will assess the recent investment methods being made by the burgeoning industry's largest players including filing for REIT classification and securitizing single-family rental incomes. Finally, the thesis will answer the question of whether this new national investment will endure as a business model and forever change the single-family landscape or simply remain and opportunistic 'trade' at a time when so many Americans lost their home.

Homes, Christopher C. "The far-infrared powder absorption spectra of bis-tetramethyltetraselenafulvalene salts [(TMTSF)₂X, X=(PF₆, AsF₆, SbF₆, BF₄, ClO₄ and ReO₄)]." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25891.

Full text
Abstract:
The far-infrared powder absorption spectra from 20-250 cm⁻¹ have been examined in a series of six protonated and deuterated (TMTSF)₂X compounds, with X=PF₆, AsF₆ and SbF₆ (octahedral anions) and X=BF₄, ClO₄ and ReO₄ (tetrahedral anions) as a function of temperature from 10K to 290K . The octahedral-anion spectra are all very similar, having 4 sharp resonances which have been attributed to three lattice modes and one internal mode. These assignments were made on the basis of isotope shifts upon deuteration, and wave number temperature dependence. The intensity of the lines is roughly proportional to the d.c. conductivity, and indicate a phase transition around 12K. The spectra of the tetrahedral-anion compounds are also similar. They show, however, extra structure below the anion-ordering temperature, TAOI including a strong feature at 30 cm⁻¹. The 30 cm⁻¹ feature shows a magnetic field depedence and may be related to the superconductivity. Simple one- and two-dimensional models are presented that indicate that this feature may be due to the activation of a transverse acoustic zone-boundary phonon, due to zone-folding, which accompanies the formation of a superlattice created by the anion-ordering transition. Extended measurements from 100-300 cm⁻¹ have been performed on protonated AsF₆ and SbF₆ compounds, allowing the identification of two internal modes. Extended measurements from 100-400 cm⁻¹ have been performed on protonated and deuterated BF₄ and ReO₄ compounds, which show internal modes of both the TMTSF and anion molecules, and a torsional mode of the TMTSF methyl groups. These assignments were made on the basis of isotope shifts upon deuteration an extensive published vibrational analysis of TMTSF.

The aim of this study was the identification of Brucella ovis REO 198 strain pathogenic effect in rams experimentally infected. The bacterial detection by PCR and anatomopathological alteration were verified. A total of 31 rams with 1-2 years old were challenged by intraconjuntival and intrapreputial inoculation using a B. ovis suspension of 2x109 CFU/mL. Each 15 days until 4 months after inoculation two of the rams were submitted to euthanasia. After this time and until 12 months after inoculation the euthanasia were taken monthly. In all necropsies were collected the lymph nodes (parotid, prescapulares, pharyngeal, mediastinal, mesenterics, inguinals), parotids glands, mandibular glands, longs, livers, spleens, kidneys, epididymes (head, body and tail), testicles, seminal vesicles, bulbourethral glands, ampulla ducts, prostates and bladders. All samples were tested by PCR and histopathological techniques. The bacteria was detected in most of all tissues in at least one of the evaluated times of inoculation with the predominance of detection in reproductive tissues. The histo pathological alterations were also observed in all tissues and in the same way showed predominance on reproductive ones. Hypoplasia of the lymphoid system and bacterial presence in reproductive and urinary systems were also observed.

Abstract:
Set within New Zealand, and against a colonial backdrop that has shaped New Zealand's social fabric, this thesis explores the complex and contradictory relationship between a group of indigenous students and a mainstream institution of higher learning. Presented as 'stories within stories' it tells the stories of eleven Maori students' experiences at the University of Canterbury between 1996 and 1998. In doing so it tells of the struggles they faced and the strategies they employed to realise their dreams in an institution that did not reflect who they were. This thesis then, despite the diverse ways in which they grew up Maori, is a victory narrative of the students' struggles to maintain their own sense of being Maori in a mono-cultural institution. The topic arose out of my own experience of being a Maori student in a mainstream university and my endeavors to make sense of our institutional invisibility on campus and the silencing of our voices. Indeed, the questions that I was left asking spurred me on to become a research student. Therefore, this thesis is as much about my journey to becoming a kaupapa Maori researcher as it is about the journeys of the students into and within the University of Canterbury. Positioned outside of the prevailing scientific traditions, the kaupapa Maori phenomenological based study I conducted took for granted Maori cultural practices, values and aspirations. I drew on traditional ways of knowing and being, as well as contemporary narratives to understand the lived realities of the students. When I began to write my thesis it became clear that an orthodox account of Maori students' experiences was inconsistent with the way I had conducted the research, and the values and practices that underpinned it. I began to rewrite my thesis, and in the process wrote back to the academy in a way that better reflected not only who I am but also the Maori community within which the research was conducted. The stories speak for themselves.

Abstract:
This thesis is motivated by an awareness of the key role that Māori second language adult speakers play in the regeneration of the Māori language. The study provides an analytical description of the development of pedagogical materials for a new method of teaching te reo Māori to adults called ‘Kia Whita!’ (Hasten the Blaze!). ‘Kia Whita!’ is designed to rapidly enhance learners’ ability to communicate in te reo Māori while also developing cultural competence, knowledge and understanding. It is modelled on the Accelerative Integrated Method which was pioneered by Wendy Maxwell in Canada for the teaching of French and English to children. The study explains the theoretical foundations on which ‘Kia Whita!’ is built and articulates the special cultural and linguistic considerations that steered its development. This is an applied linguistic thesis drawing on second language acquisition theory and kaupapa Māori methodology. As a result these materials are cognisant of the intertwining issues and needs around second language acquisition, culture, place and the validation of the stated materials by key Māori stakeholders balanced against the varied needs of the second language learner of Te Reo Māori. Adopting this approach to the development of ‘Kia Whita!’ allows the materials to meet the high standards of effective second language pedagogy; and articulate Māori linguistic and cultural content acceptable to Māori experts while being comprehensible to learners of the language.

Background: Obesity in children is a public health problem of great magnitude. In recent decades, there has been increasing rates of caesarean sections and obesity, and might have a possible causal relationship between the two events. Objective: To assess the association between cesarean section delivery and overweight at six years of age in a city in northeastern Brazil. Methods: This is a birth cohort conducted with 672 children followed in home visits until the sixth year of age. The outcome variable was overweight obtained by body mass index by age and the main independent variable was cesarean delivery. Were evaluated as covariates: gender; birth weight (<2500g, ?2500g); duration of breastfeeding (<12 months ?12 months); calories intake at 72 months (<1935 kcal, ?1935 kcal); physical activity at school; means of transport to go to school; maternal excessive weight gain during pregnancy; family income (?1 minimum wage, ? 2 minimum wages); maternal schooling; maternal overweight and maternal work. The association of caesarean delivery and overweight was estimated by logistic regression analysis, with the significance level of 5% and its respective 95% confidence interval. Results: Overweight was present in 36.6% of children born by cesarean section compared with 20.2% of those born by vaginal delivery. The association between overweight and cesarean delivery remained statistically significant after adjusting for confounders (OR = 1.96, 95% CI 1.61; 3.22). Conclusion: The results support the assumption that the birth by cesarean delivery is associated with an increased risk of overweight in childhood. Pregnant women should be warned about the increased risk of being overweight for those children born by cesarean delivery.

Quadrotors aircraft are composed by four propellers mounted on four engines on a cross or x disposition, and, in this structure, the engines on the same arm spin in the same direction and the other arm in the opposite direction. By rotating each helix generates vertical upward thrust. The control is done by varying the rotational speed of each motor. Among the advantages of this type of vehicle can cite the mechanical simplicity of construction, the high degree of maneuverability and the ability to have vertical takeoffs and landings. The modeling and control of quadrirrotores have been a challenge due to problems such as nonlinearity and coupling between variables. Several strategies have been developed to control this type of vehicle, from the classical control to modern. There are air surveillance applications where a camera is fixed on the vehicle to point forward, where it is desired that the quadrotor moves at a fixed altitude toward the target also pointing forward, which imposes an artificial constraint motion, because it is not desired that it moves laterally, but only forwards or backwards and around its axes . This restriction is similar to the naturally existing on robots powered by wheels with differential drive, which also can not move laterally, due to the friction of the wheels. Therefore, a position control strategy similar to that used in this type of robot could be adapted for aerial robots like quadrotor. This dissertation presents and discusses some strategies for the control of position and orientation of quadrotors found in the literature and proposes a strategy based on dynamic control of mobile robots with differential drive, called the variable reference control. The validity of the proposed strategy is demonstrated through computer simulations
