Abstract:
Spatial and temporal frequency dynamics were experimentally tracked via flow visualization for Newtonian fluids as a function of the inner cylinder Reynolds number (Rei) in the flow between concentric, independently rotating cylinders with a radius ratio of 0.912 and an aspect ratio of 60.7. Eight transitions from laminar to turbulent flow were characterized in detail for a stationary outer cylinder, producing highly resolved space–time and frequency–time plots for wavy, modulated and weakly turbulent states. A previously unreported early-modulated wavy vortex flow was found in our high aspect ratio geometry both with and without the presence of a dislocation. The envelope of stability for this flow state was shown to cross into the co-rotating regime, and is present up to Reo ~ 60, where Reo is the outer cylinder Reynolds number. This early modulation is independent of acceleration in the range 0.18 < dRei/dτ < 2.9, where τ is the time nondimensionalized with a viscous time scale. While many of the flow states have been previously observed in geometries with somewhat different radius ratios, we provide new characterization of transitional structures for Reo = 0 in the range 0 < Re* < 21.4, where Re* = Rei/Rec and Rec is the value of Rei at the primary instability. Special attention has been given to ramp rate. For quasi-static ramps, axisymmetric states are stable over the ranges of Re* = [(0–1.17), > 15.4], states characterized by a single distinct temporal frequency for Re* = [(1.17–1.41), (3.56–5.20), (7.85–15.4)], states with multiple temporal frequencies for Re* = [(1.41–3.56), (5.20–7.85)], and a transition from laminar to weakly turbulent vortices occurs at Re* = 5.49. All flow states are characterized by symmetry/symmetry-breaking features as well as azimuthal and axial wavenumbers.

Abstract:
In this paper, we present Reo, which forms a paradigm for composition of software components based on the notion of mobile channels. Reo is a channel-based exogenous coordination model in which complex coordinators, called connectors, are compositionally built out of simpler ones. The simplest connectors in Reo are a set of channels with well-defined behaviour supplied by users. Reo can be used as a language for coordination of concurrent processes, or as a ‘glue language’ for compositional construction of connectors that orchestrate component instances in a component-based system. The emphasis in Reo is just on connectors and their composition, and not on the entities that connect to, communicate and cooperate through these connectors. Each connector in Reo imposes a specific coordination pattern on the entities (for example, components) that perform I/O operations through that connector, without the knowledge of those entities. Channel composition in Reo is a very powerful mechanism for construction of connectors. We demonstrate the expressive power of connector composition in Reo through a number of examples. We show that exogenous coordination patterns that can be expressed as (meta-level) regular expressions over I/O operations can be composed in Reo out of a small set of only five primitive channel types.

Abstract:
Abstract

Coordination models and languages are relatively new methods in modeling component-based software systems. These models and languages separate the communication aspect of systems from their computation aspect, and hence enable the modeling of concurrent, distributed, and heterogeneous systems. In this thesis, our goal is to show that Reo, a channel-based exogenous coordination language, is powerful enough to be used in the area of workflow management. In order to achieve this goal, we consider a set of workflow control patterns. We implement each of these patterns in terms of a Reo circuit and show that these Reo circuits capture the behavior of the corresponding workflow control patterns. We believe that the patterns we choose in this thesis are enough to show the strength of Reo as a workflow language.

We explain our approach in four steps. In the first step, we specify the general definition of workflow control patterns in terms of some Point Interval Temporal Logic formulas. In the second step, we convert each PITL formula to a constraint automaton. In the third step, we implement each workflow control pattern by a Reo circuit; each Reo circuit consists of a set of components and a set of connectors that connect and coordinate those components and provide its behavior as a relation on timed data streams; a timed data stream is a twin pair of a data stream and a time stream. In the forth step, we compositionally derive the constraint automata of that Reo circuit and finally, in the fifth step, we show the equivalence of the two constraint automata.

The constituent operations of utterances are describes through the analysis of determiner an dof the particles which introduce phrases. The use of determiners does not point to a distinction between verbs and nouns as word classes, but defines a mode of referring to a notion, connected to a mode of functioning, either as predicate or as argument of the predicate. The general shapes of utterances conform to a limited number of basic patterns, characterized by the scheme of phrase-introductory particles, which determines the nature of the predicative relationship. Predicaton is based on three fundamental operations : identification, location, singling out an occurrence of process in relation to a subject

Abstract:
By 1855, most Maori still lived in a tribal setting, with little official Pakeha interference. This would have been as they expected, exercising their tino rangatiratanga, the chiefly rights guaranteed by the Treaty of Waitangi. However, their world was changing. In an effort to gain Pakeha goods, many Maori had entered the market economy. Most had converted to Christianity. Many could read and write. Some had sold land to accommodate the increasing numbers of Pakeha settlers. These trends gratified the government. It envisaged a New Zealand society dominated by Pakeha, in which European mores would be norm, and where its sovereignty, gained through the Treaty, would be substantive rather than nominal. At this time, the government pursued the policy of iwi kotahi (one people) or "amalgamation". This policy included the aim of elevating Maori socially and economically by extending to them the benefits of European civilisation. It sought too to encourage Maori to give up their "waste" lands for Pakeha settlement and for Maori to accept the rule of English law, and government authority. Ultimately the two races would become one society- a Pakeha-style society. The government used newspapers for disseminating its message to Maori, publishing the bi-lingual Maori Messenger-Te Karere Maori from January 1855 to September 1863. This thesis investigates the governments newspaper, plus other Maori language newspapers appearing within the period, printed by government agents, evangelical Pakeha, the Wesleyan Church, and the rival Maori government, the Kingitanga. The thesis not only looks at the impact of newspapers upon Maori society and politics at this time, but also how the newspapers portrayed the major social and political issues to Maori, including the first Taranaki War, the Kohimarama Conference, and the impending all-out war with the Kingitanga in Waikato. Using the newspapers as its major source, this thesis seeks to show how Maori might have understood the issues, and where possible, to allow them to respond in their own voices. We are fortunate that for almost a year the Kingitanga was able to publish its own views in Te Hokioi, thus allowing the anti-government Maori voice to articulate its stand. However, Maori opinion was hardly unitary. The Pakeha-run Maori language newspapers, through reports, reported speeches, and their corresponence columns, provide another set of Maori opinions, which show a variety of opinions on political and social issues. Many histories of this period focus on the tensions and conflicts between Crown and Maori, thus marginalising pro-government Maori, the waverers, and those who merely wanted to keep trouble from their door. This thesis endeavours to illuminate the whole colonial discourse as it appeared in the Maori language newspapers, providing as wide a range of opinions as possible.

With the popularization of the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV s) grows the need to use more sophisticated, robust and effective controllers in order to enhance its flight performance. This work aims the development of a non-linear control to be applied on a quadrotor aircraft, reducing flight time and improving system stability. The most commonly control technique used consist of a linear control law known as Proportional Integrate Derivative (PID), which provides stability and displacement for this class of system. However, this technique has certain limitations in performance by not considering construction parameters such as actuator s saturation and inertial moments, associated with the mass distribution of the system. Given this scenario, it is proposed the implementation of a control law, based on a formulation of optimal response time named Proximate Time Optimal Servomechanism (PTOS) to be applied on the degrees of freedom for rotation and translation of the vehicle. Furthermore, it is proposed a new approach to operate on a bidirectional displacement of a geo-referenced trajectory control system, based on the concept of optimal time, such as PTOS. Firstly it is presented the system dynamics, then a linearization, for purpose of control design, is achieved so that the proposed controllers are developed.

The following study is about the estimation of three-dimensional position of multiple objects captured in images in a stereo vision setting. The mathematical formalism begins with the representation of motion in Euclidean space. After that, the projection of the images is performed in an ideal camera perspective using homogeneous coordinates. This results in the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters, which are part of the camera calibration. From that, stereo vision is used to obtain three-dimensional position of objects that are captured in the images from two cameras. Thus, depths of various objects are obtained to reconstruct their positions. The validation of the proposed algorithms are made through an experiment built for this purpose. This experiment uses two cameras with semi-parallel views to the center. In the center of the environment there is a gimbal platform, which performs a uniform motion. Above, there is a plan with three white dots, simulating the objects position. This motion captures two images, which are processed by the proposed algorithm. The validation consists in making a comparison between the orientation planes of the gimbal servomotors and reconstruction objects.

Abstract:
Critical systems are present in many applications and require high reliability. However, there are still challenges for the verification and certification of these systems. The graphical language Reo is based on coordination and model the communication of software components. A set of existing tools offers compilers and reasoners based on proof assistants and model checkers for Reo-specified systems. This paper proposes the integration of these compilers through an interface that allows building Reo circuits, converting the model to the compilers' input language, simplifying the use of logic tools and allowing the creation of new channels in addition to the canonical ones. The theory used, integrated tools, features of interface and some examples are presented.
