Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Recently, the Obstructed Defecation Syndrome score (ODS score) was developed and validated by Renzi to assess clinical staging and to allow evaluation and comparison of the efficacy of treatment of this disorder. OBJECTIVE: Our goal is to validate the Portuguese version of Renzi ODS score, according to the Consensus based Standards for the selection of the Health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist. METHODS: Following guidelines for cross-cultural validity, Renzi ODS score was translated into the Portuguese language. Then, a group of patients and healthy controls were invited to fill in the Renzi ODS score at baseline, after 2 weeks and 3 months, respectively. We assessed internal consistency, reliability and measurement error, content and construct validity, responsiveness and interpretability. RESULTS: A total of 113 individuals (77 patients; 36 healthy controls) completed the questionnaire. Seventy and 30 patients repeated the Renzi ODS score after 2 weeks and 3 months respectively. Factor analysis confirmed the unidimensionality of the scale. Cronbach’s α coefficient of 0.77 supported item’s homogeneity. Weighted quadratic kappa of 0.89 established test-retest reliability. The smallest detectable change at the individual level was 2.66 and at the group level was 0.30. Renzi ODS score and the total (-0.32) and physical (-0.43) SF-36 scores correlated negatively. Patient and control’s groups significantly differed (11 points). The change score of Renzi ODS score between baseline and 3 months correlated negatively with the clinical evolution (-0.86). ROC analysis showed minimal important change of 2.00 with AUC 0.97. Neither floor nor ceiling effects were observed. CONCLUSION: This work validated the Portuguese version of Renzi ODS score. We can now use this reliable, responsive, and interpretable (at the group level) tool to evaluate Portuguese ODS patients.

Abstract:
This article entitled “Rendo Bangku Craft of Koto Gadang West Sumatra on Fashion Products” aims to raise the potential of Koto Gadang’s rendo bangku patterns, as one of the excellent products of the Koto Gadang village community. Rendo bangku craft which was originally used to decorate the edges of women's shawls in Koto Gadang is now being innovated by placing Koto Gadang’s rendo (embroidery) on fashion products. The method used is experimental, by the means of exploration, design, manifestation, and evaluation. Exploration was carried out to find ideas or concepts related to the product of Koto Gadang local embroidery which was carried out using observation, literature study, and interviews. Designing is the step of an embodiment of ideas and concepts from exploration into the design of women’s wear, men’s wear, and accessories. Embodiment is the step to manifest the result of the pattern design of fashion products in a real form into working drawings, as well as into finished products including men's clothing.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThis article presents a reading of Gian Francesco Busenello's and Claudio Monteverdi's opera L'incoronazione di Poppea in light of seventeenth-century theatrical practices. Reconstructing the doubling plan from the opera's premiere in 1643 on the basis of contemporary doubling practices and the correspondence of the Ferrarese music patron Marquess Cornelio Bentivoglio, the author argues, adducing circumstantial evidence, that Ottavia and Drusilla were conceived as a double role for the operatic quick-change artist Anna Renzi. While Renzi is known to have created Ottavia, this part is half the size of all other roles written for her, which invariably involve dramatic, emotional and musical variety to a much greater extent than does Monteverdi's tragic Empress. Renzi was admired for her command of both tragedy and comedy, and the essay develops the hypothesis of the double role as an intertextual interpenetration of the title heroines from the pseudo-Senecan tragedy Octavia and Girolamo Bargagli's sixteenth-century comedy La pellegrina.

Abstract:
The thesis consists in the commented edition of the correspondence between the writer Italo Svevo and those who took part in the ―Svevo affair‖. The main reasons for the choice of this topic are two: first of all, the present study allows for an update of the philological state of the documents involved; secondly this work is an attempt to reinterpret Italo Svevo‘s role as a writer, by using his words to question certain ideas passed along and established by the critical vulgata over a period of many years. This research also offers an insight on how the author responded to certain accusations raised by some Italian intellectual environments, whose main claims were related to his imperfect language, his almost foreign origins (or in other words, the marginality of his native city of Trieste), as well as to his anomalous literary career. This work has added more unpublished documents to the material previously acquired, which were found in Italian and foreign libraries and archives during my doctorate studies.

Reading as an art of replying and, the reader, as the representative of this world, parallel to reality, are the initial premises of The last reader (2006), by Ricardo Piglia. The relation between Piglia and the reader has a trajectory in his literature. Reflections about the reader’s role in the literary process had already been mentioned previously in other literary works. This is, very often, the accomplice that deciphers the riddles in his novels, elevating thus it to a work of recognition of ideological and esthetic speeches, which are many times, social and historical. Piglia’s work dialogues with Esthetic of Reception Theory, particularly in Hans Robert Jauss’s Wolfgang Iser’s pioneer works, since Piglia makes it possible by the sequencing in his critical/literary plot that the reader takes out new meanings or builds meanings/solutions from the crossing of “horizons of expectations” about the work and the reader in his historical levels of background and thus, building this experience in esthetical levels, from the Theory of Aesthetic Effect on, in which, fictitious and imaginary concepts are introduced, as well as “text game”, so hidden, especially in The last reader (2006) and Los diarios de Emilio Renzi(2015). His literary works are the main objects of this study. Ricardo Piglia reaches the matter of the reader starting from a fragmented and multiple space, present in early days of Argentinian literature, since pioneer writers, like José Hernández and Domingo F. Sarmiento, passing by Macedonio Fernández, Julio Cortázar, and fundamentally Jorge Luis Borges, but also present in the universal literature, with Miguel de Cervantes, Franz Kafka, Fiódor Dostoiévski, T. S. Eliot, Willian Shakespeare and Edgar Alan Poe. It comes up from this space, the outbreak of voices and speeches, fictionalized in a typology of readers, who travels, hide and express themselves but who help to compose the image of the current regular reader, who is named from the title of his work as “the last reader”.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Political communication is extremely fascinating. The ultimate goal of politics is to persuade the voters, hence effective communication is of paramount importance for politicians. Matteo Renzi is a very skilled speaker. He entered the Italian political scene in a moment when the country was facing a lot of problems and citizens had lost their confidence in politics. Since the beginning of his career, Matteo Renzi has tried to regain the trust of Italian voters by using his communicative skills he is able to adapt to the context in which he speaks. Moreover, he is a good storyteller. Throughout his political career, he tells the story of a hero –himself – who fights against different enemies and works for and together with his citizens. His speeches are persuasive, engaging and emotional. The aim of this study is to show how he develops his rhetoric, by providing a thorough analysis of his political communication. This work is structured as follows. After a brief description of what political communication is and how it has developed in Italy (chapters 1 and 2), Matteo Renzi’s rhetoric is carefully analysed in chapter 3. Then this analysis is used to examine the speech he gave at the UN General Assembly (29th September 2015). Finally, chapter 5 contains an analysis of the simultaneous interpretation of that speech, with the aim of identifying which characteristics of Matteo Renzi’s rhetoric caused problems for the interpreter. Since only one speech and its interpretation are analysed, this final chapter is of no statistical importance. However, it could represent a starting point for further and more detailed analysis carried out with a larger corpus containing more of Matteo Renzi’s speeches and their interpretations into English.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the strategies and techniques of political communication adopted by politicians and union leaders to communicate labor and work in Italy. The theoretical framework is obtained by revisiting the framing theory from the perspective of the new rhetoric. The thesis provides the analysis of two case studies: the political communication of the last reform of the Italian labor market, known as the Jobs Act, and the public communication during the negotiation that took place around the so-called “Fiat Pomigliano” case in 2010. The study also analyzes collective bargaining in the US automotive sector during autumn 2015. The findings suggest that in communicating labor and work, the controversial strategy adopted in political communication may not be considered effective in building a lasting consensus.

Abstract:
It has been known that bottom hinged Oscillating Wave Surge Converters (OWSCs) are an efficient way of extracting power from ocean waves (Whittaker et al. 2007). OWSCs are in general large buoyant flaps, hinged at the bottom of the ocean and oscillating back and forth under the action of incoming incident waves (Schmitt et al. 2012, Renzi and Dias 2012). The oscillating motion is then converted into energy by pumping high-pressure water to drive a hydro–electric turbine. This paper deals with numerical studies of wave loading on an OWSC using the FLUENT software. In numerical simulation of wave loading on an OWSC using mesh-based methods, the mesh around the flap is required to be updated frequently. This is due to the large amplitude rotation of the OWSC around the hinge. In this work, the remeshing was achieved by using the so-called dynamic mesh approach built in FLUENT. Furthermore, the motion of the OWSC is updated in time using a fourth order multi point time integration scheme coupled with the flow solver. The results for the flap motion and the excited torque on the hinged position were compared with experimental data obtained in a wave tank at Queen’s University of Belfast. The results showed the capability of the numerical model with a dynamic mesh approach in modeling large amplitude motions of the flap. In addition, the pressures at various locations on the flap were compared with the experimental measurements in order to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed model in capturing local features of the flow as well as the global features.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the behaviour of a bottom hinged flap-type wave energy converter (WEC), namely the Oscillating Wave Surge Converter (OWSC), in random seas. The semi-analytical model of Renzi and Dias (2013b) for an OWSC in the open ocean is considered to analyze the performance of the device in random incident waves. The modelling is performed within the framework of a linear potential flow theory, by means of Green’s integral theorem. The resultant hypersingular integral equation for the velocity potential obtained from the above formulation is solved using a series expansion in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. The behaviour of the device is investigated for six different sea states, generally representative of the wave climate in the North Atlantic Ocean at the European Marine Energy Centre test site. A Bretschneider spectrum is considered in order to reproduce the sea climate. The analysis is made for sea states where the spectral energy contribution from large periods, which cause excitation of body resonance of the flap — not modelled by the linear theory — is almost negligible. The power take-off damping is optimised for each individual sea state to calculate the captured power. The investigation is undertaken for two flaps of different widths, resembling the Oyster1 and the new Oyster800 version of the Oyster WEC, respectively. Comparison is made between the performances of the two converters. The effect of varying the width and the characteristic parameters of the flap on the capture factor in random seas is then discussed. The results of the analysis show that the performance of the device is fairly consistent for the sea states considered. Also an enhancement in the overall average capture factor is shown for the latest version of the wave energy conversion device.
