Abstract:
(This book just ate my dog!), de Richard Byrne; e O menino, o cachorro, de Simone Bibian e Mariana Massarani.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Mesothelioma is an aggressive tumor with very poor prognosis. The limited availability of therapeutic options for mesothelioma patients suggests the need for a better understanding of mesothelioma biology and the identification of novel therapeutic targets. Progranulin is a pluripotent growth factor whose dysregulation is implicated in several human pathologies including cancer. The pro-tumorigenic activity of progranulin depends on the activation of its functional receptor EphA2. Indeed, in bladder cancer, progranulin promotes EphA2 phosphorylation at Ser897 and triggers EphA2 oncogenic action resulting in increased tumor cell migration, invasion and in vivo tumor growth. Both progranulin and EphA2 are expressed in mesothelioma, with progranulin promoting tumor angiogenesis in a VEGF-independent manner and EphA2 being often mutated or overexpressed. However, in mesothelioma, the potential functional interaction between progranulin and EphA2 is unexplored. Using a panel of mesothelioma cell lines covering all mesothelioma subtypes, we observed increased levels of phosphorylated EphA2 at Ser897 when compared to immortalized normal mesothelial cells, and the levels of phosphorylation positively correlated with progranulin expression. Progranulin-dependent activation of EphA2 in mesothelioma cells promoted the activation of the MAPK and AKT pathways and ERK1/2-dependent EphA2 phosphorylation at Ser897. Transient depletion of progranulin by siRNA approaches as well as GRN gene knock-out by CRISP/Cas9 strategies in mesothelioma cells reduced the activation of the AKT signaling pathway and inhibited the migratory and invasive capabilities of progranulin-depleted cells when compared to parental cells, suggesting that the progranulin/EphA2 axis is oncogenic in mesothelioma. However, EphA2 genetic ablation resulted in an increased basal activation of AKT and MAPK and in progranulin-evoked EphA2-independet AKT/MAPK activation, indicating that alternative membrane receptors might compensate for EphA2 loss and sustain progranulin action in mesothelioma. Using several pharmacological and genetic approaches, we uncovered a role for EGFR and FAK in compensating for EphA2 loss by triggering progranulin-dependent oncogenic signaling in mesothelioma, highlighting a complex functional cross-talk between EphA2, EGFR and FAK in mediating progranulin-dependent tumorigenesis. Thus, these results suggest the need for combinatorial therapeutic approaches to blunt progranulin oncogenic action in mesothelioma. Citation Format: Elisa Ventura, Simone Buraschi, Stephen J. Abstract:
The article presents for the Lithuanian audience an interdisciplinary approach of literary canon studies that integrates diverse methods of various disciplines (sociology of literature and culture, literary and cultural history, teaching of literature, text reception and aesthetic response history, memory and media research and bibliography studies). The most intense development of literary canon studies can be observed in Western Europe and the United States in the last decade of the 20th century. This was due to the fact that the scholars engaged in the field of postcolonialism, gender studies and neo-Marxism gave it a strong impulse by initiating a debate about insufficient representation of some social groups (women, racial or ethnic minorities and people from lower social strata) in high school curricula in the USA. The debate was expanded into theoretical polemics of whether the canon is formed by means of objective aesthetic criteria or, on the contrary, canon depends on the social contract. Methodologically, investigations of literary canon that are genetically related to the tradition of sociology of culture seem to be the most productive, while this perspective provides an apparatus for a detailed investigation of relations between specific interests of literary field and wider national, social or group interests. The framework of this article is based on the studies of John Guillory, Renate von Heydebrand and Simone Winko. Their essential starting point is the understanding of the canon as a sociocultural process in which the political elite selects a corpus of significant texts in accordance with tradition and formulates practices that ensure the transmission of those texts for future generations. Therefore, canon formation turns to be a strategy based on complex relations of evaluation, cognition and actions that aims to conserve this selected knowledge and transmit it to future generations. The structure of the canon is directly related to the notion of literature and literariness; a society (or its group) defines its canon by considering what they recognize as valuable.Unlike religious canons, which can only be constructed by theologians, there are a lot of canonizing institutions (schools, universities, literary criticism, theatre repertoire, book market, libraries, etc.) involved in the formation of literary canons. They do not create any well-balanced system of the canon but rather conduct diverse practices of canonization. We can distinguish a micro and macro level in the process of canon formation. The micro level contains a lot of separate actions of canonization that propel the canonization process which enables the canon formation at macro level. Origin, stabilization and transformation of literary canon are multidimensional processes, thus it is essential not to lose sight of the interaction of separate dimensions.

Background:Evidence on the efficacy of Mepolizumab (MEPO) in Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (EGPA) is scarce [1].Objectives:To assess the efficacy and safety of MEPO in real-life clinical practice. Methods:We retrospectively included patients diagnosed with EGPA and treated with MEPO (100 or 300 mg/month). MEPO efficacy was evaluated in the first 12 months in terms of systemic disease and asthma control. The occurrence of any adverse event (AE) was recorded.Results:142 patients were included (38% males; median age 46.4 (IQR 36.7-54.4); 110 and 32 on MEPO 100 and 300 mg/month, respectively). General, ear-nose-throat, pulmonary, and neurological symptoms significantly decreased during treatment (table 1). MEPO accounted for a significant reduction in the BVAS (figure 1) and for a steroid sparing effect (figure 2). The proportion of patients with asthma attacks decreased by 90% at 12 months compared to t0, and asthma-related emergency accesses dropped from 17.4% to 2.3%. Overall, 21.1% of patients had a non-serious AE.Table 1.Control of clinical symptomsMEPO beginning (t0)3 monthsp-value(t3 vs t0)6 monthsp-value(t6 vs t0)12 monthsp-value(t12 vs t0)N obsN=142N=135N=123N=89General symptoms40 (28.2%)17 (12.6%)<0.00119 (15.5%)<0.00113 (14.6%)0.002Cutaneous manifestations13 (9.2%)6 (4.4%)0.0085 (4.1%)0.0254 (4.5%)0.180ENT manifestations106 (74.7%)52 (38.5%)<0.00144 (35.8%)<0.00129 (32.6%)<0.001Pulmonary manifestations130 (91.6%)59 (43.7%)<0.00139 (31.7%)<0.00128 (31.5%)<0.001Cardiac manifestations6 (4.2%)2 (1.5%)0.0832 (1.6%)0.08300.157Intestinal manifestations10 (7.0%)1 (0.7%)0.0054 (3.3%)0.0593 (3.4%)0.059Renal manifestations5 (3.5%)3 (2.2%)0.41400.0461 (1.1%)0.317Neurological manifestations36 (25.4%)22 (16.3%)0.01218 (14.6%)0.00310 (11.2%)0.035Figure 1.Changes in BVASFigure 2.Steroid treatmentConclusion:MEPO effectively controlled systemic and respiratory EGPA symptoms in a large European cohort, with no major safety concerns.References:[1]Wechsler et al. Falangola, Chiara. "Le romans à images description et fragmentation dans Le Jardin des Plantes de Claude Simon, L’Inauguration de la salle des Vents de Renaud Camus et Terrasse à Rome de Pascal Quignard." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44617.

Abstract:
The framework used to study the three novels arises from the need to define a particular type of descriptive and fragmented scripta, which textualize an historical or existential disaster. Approaching our texts as ‘romans à images’, we endeavour to create a definition that problematizes the techniques of the ‘conventional’ novel and engenders a new conception of narrative and of its formal dominant, in relation to art and to the notion of incommensurability. The three novels textualize an existential or historical disaster: Simon’s Jardin thematizes World War II through the author’s own experience, as well as the inscription in the text of the painter Gastone Novelli’s post-Holocaust art. Camus’ Inauguration is a three hundred pages long elegy to those friends lost because of AIDS, whose memory the novel tries to preserve. The circular, mirrored structure of L’Inauguration is inspired by the artist Jean-Paul Marcheschi’s work. Quignard’s Terrasse is a series of literary tableaux writing the quest for the origins of and the quest for the self. The poetics of the latter draws heavily from the fictitious 16th century engraver Meaume. The three novels explicitly refer to art and are structured on internal laws, which more closely resemble those of poetry and the visual arts than conventional narratives. They take the form of fragmented and syncopated narratives, constructed by and laid out in a visual mode. The latter is constituted by the juxtaposition of typographically and thematically independent paragraphs – blocs or fragments –, whose unity resides in the harmony or counterpoint of their juxtaposition. The chronological and syntagmatic construction of the ‘conventional’ novel is replaced by a paradigmatic dynamic that assembles and juxtaposes the image-blocs according to the laws created, governed by the signifier's materiality or by the principle of variation. Central to the mimetic and aesthetic work of the three novels is restoration of a pictorial or mental image, which sometimes manifests itself in an obsessive search for the mot juste. The three novels confront the referent in their radical search for an ever-postponed meaning, which seems to become fixed only in the aesthetic elsewhere of pictorial harmonies and poetic suggestions.

GJATA, ADELA. "Renato Simoni: un'idea di teatro tra drammaturgia, critica teatrale e pratiche registiche." Doctoral thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2158/855504.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation aims to reconstruct the artistic biography of Renato Simoni through his activities as playwright, theater critic and stage director; this last activity is investigated mainly through the theater productions directed by Simoni for the International Theatre Festival of Venice and for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. The archival research at the Livia Simoni Library of Milano, the Historical Archive of Venice Biennale, the Historical Archive of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Center for Studies of Teatro Stabile di Torino and the Theatrical Library at the Goldoni House has allowed to obtain a large and varied amount of documentary material such as autograph letters, scenographic sketches, stills, posters, theater programs, balance sheets and contracts, which has been particularly useful not only to trace Simoni’s intellectual biography and to investigate specific episodies, but also to place his artistic route in the more general cultural and theatrical context of the first half of the twentieth century. The dissertation is accompanied by a corpus of unpublished documents which informs about every single performance directed by Simoni. The Documents section is completed by some selected autograph letters sent to Simoni from the main italian personalities of theater, culture and diplomacy in the first half of the twentieth century.

Abstract:
This edited volume gives voice to pluralised avenues from visual communication and cultural studies regarding the Global South and beyond, including examples from China, India, Cambodia, Brazil, Mexico and numerous other countries. Defining visual communication and culture as an umbrella term that encompasses imagery studies, the moving image and non-verbal visual communication, the first three chapters of the book describe de-Westernisation discourse as a way to strengthen emic research and the Global South as both a geographical concept and, even more so, a category of diversity and pluralism. The subsequent regional case study-based chapters draw on various emic theories and methodologies and find a complex arrangement of visuality between sociocultural and sociopolitical practices and institutions. This book targets a wide range of scholars: academics with expertise in (regional) visual studies as well as researchers, students and practitioners working on the Global South and de-Westernisation. Abstract:
This chapter studies the role that Hasidism played in the thought of the modernized Jewish intelligentsia of Eastern Europe toward the end of the 19th century. Simon Dubnow played a pivotal role in the emergence of this new image of Hasidism. In his autobiography, Dubnow describes in some detail the influence on him at that time of Leo Tolstoy and Ernest Renan. The influence of Renan's History of Christianity is quite evident in the structure of Dubnow's History of Hasidism as well as in some of Dubnow's solutions to problems of interpretation. Like Renan, Dubnow opened with a discussion of the social and intellectual background of a movement that can be traced to a founder known only for a long time through oral sources which retained the character of legend or saga. Applying Renan's statement that such pious biographies have a historical core, Dubnow stripped the life of the Baal Shem Tov, as recorded in the Shivhei ha-Besht, of its supernatural elements to reveal a simple, humble man who loved nature, especially the forests of the Carpathian mountains; a man who had immense affection for the common people and disdain for the proud, aloof scholars of his time and who preached a lofty doctrine of religious pantheism and universal brotherhood.

Abstract:
Richard Jones, Professor of Political Economy at the East India College, Haileybury, and William Whewell, Fellow and later Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, had been undergraduate contemporaries. They collaborated in the foundation of the Statistical Movement and in the development of an inductive economics, dependent on statistical data, that would challenge the rigid deductivism and a priori generalizations of Ricardo’s political economy, which held sway in the 1830s. They envisaged economics as a discipline built on the close observation of actual economic behaviour and its contexts, and on numerical evidence, rather than dependent on generalized assumptions about human behaviour as in Ricardianism. Jones published his Essay on the Distribution of Wealth and on the Sources of Taxation. Part 1. Rent in 1831; Whewell, whose role was largely to encourage Jones, made some of the first contributions to econometrics in the early 1830s. They looked upon the Statistical Movement as an intellectual enterprise but became disenchanted when it veered towards policy and politics. Their work was influenced by the Saint-Simonian movement in France at this time, and it influenced Karl Marx in turn, who greatly admired Jones’s Essay. Their inductivism and empiricism makes them founders of the historical school of economics in Victorian Britain, a critical intellectual movement which became more evident and influential later in the century.

Abstract:
Tears are flowing. Whether Yvonne Catterfeld, Kazim as-Sahir, Unati Msenga-na, Liu Huan, Simon Cowell or Lira – they are all part of a jury of global music casting show formats such as The Voice, Idol or Got Talent and show their tears in front of the camera, seemingly ashamed and yet completely uninhibited. Their tears flow in reaction to ‘particularly soulful’ music titles or to the candidates’ tragic personal stories, paired with the ‘right’ song selection. The display of great emotions is an essential element of reality TV formats. With Sara Ahmed, they can be understood in the sense of an ‘affective economy’ as an effect of their circulation, their staging as a specific ‘emotional style’ of dealing with emotions (Eva Illouz). The circulation of affects in casting shows is a global one, since the formats, developed in Europe, have produced local versions in over 60 countries worldwide. Emotions play an important role in the successful localization of the formats and define a complex area of conflict between a sensitization to socio-cultural characteristics and the ‘reproduction of culturalistic concepts’ (Laura Sūna) or clichés. In European cultural history, tears have developed a special significance as guarantors of the authenticity of empathy (Sigrid Weigel), and are generally associated with femininity, however at the same time have been film-historically recoded as ‘gender-neutral’ (Renate Möhrmann). Keeping in mind that all these casting show formats have been exported from Europe, these observations are of special interest, especially since one can see men and women crying equally in the Arabic, German or South African versions of e. g. The Voice. This article questions the concurrence of musical performance, display of tears, gender performance and the translocal dramaturgy of music casting shows.
