Full textThis dissertation concerns two fox-spirit characters in two fantastic vernacular novels at the end of Qing period:Yaohuazhuan 瑤華傳 by Ding Bingren 丁秉仁 (1803) and Huliyuan Quanzhuan 狐狸緣全傳(1888) by Zuiyueshanren 醉月山人. I study in particular the demonic voice of these protagonists and the other feminine andhybrid characters in the text, which defies and delegitimizes patriarchal authority. This analysis uses Lacanianand Freudian psychoanalytical tools, trying to find signifiants in the text. The dissertation offers a great numberof excerpts translated for the first time. The fundamental concept which emerges is femininity linked to talent. The dissertation aims so to prove the socio-political value of fantasy in these texts, which takes vixens as beingallusions to real talented women of the time (nuns, courtesans, guixiu poets, performers)

Full textNuptials are a recurrent work in Jean-Claude Renard's work. They form the synthesis of different experiences : they are nuptials connected to erotic and sensorial experience, alchemical nuptials connected to esoteric experience, religious nuptials, which take some characters from the covenant of the scriptures, nuptials of the immanent-transcendent mystery - that Jean-Claude Renard defines as the indefinite union, without loss of singularity, between the man and the god, and nourished by manifold spiritualties -, mystical nuptials, and poetical nuptials, writing being adequate to the characteristics of nuptials. So, nuptials appear as the fundamental theme of the work. They organize all the poetical universe, which is composed of the motives and the poetics of divorce and nuptials. The originality of the work lastly comes from this dynamic copresence of discordance and unity. But the immanent-transcendent nature of nuptials doesn't exclude ambiguities : the poet sometimes seems to turn the poem and the spiritual life towards "over nuptials" of which the absolute transcendence, at least apparent, may be a problem
Zemmour, Corinne. "Perception du monde par les animaux dans le Roman de Renart." Paris 4, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1993PA040257.
Full textContrary to what people think, the main interest of the Roman de Renart doesn't consist in parody of the great literary genre, but in the revers of the point of view - geographical, architectural, physical and biological - of our traditional anthropocentrist perception of the universe. Because they pretend to be dreamlike masters of the world, the beast of the Roman de Renart, able to interpret cleverly their sensations in relation to a universe of coherent beliefs, necessarily come to manipulate a primitively anthropocentrist language in order to grant revolutionary meanings since zoomorphical and zoocentrist. Restituted in a holistic network woven through with numerous symbolical micro-systems explaining their own perfect aesthetic examples, these pictures reveal the true lesson of the work. They actually suggest apprehending cosmos in more realistic and reasonable way of which the human being, sincerely trying to avoid an artificial and aristocratic society, would have to listen the message and in this way, get to not lose his soul. So the aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how the animals of the Roman de Renart consider lexicologically and besides symbolically the space, architectural elements of the universe, like notions of kingdom and society, in order to explain the didactic and salutary aspect of their lessons

Full text"Everyman for myself", that is the amusing motto Catulle Mendès attributed to Jules Renard (1864-1910). Indeed, as an author of an intimate Diary and of a work which looks like his Diary, Renard pays in his written work very close attention to himself and to others. In that, he takes part in the fin-de-siècle movement, when the cult of the document in literature was partly supplanted by the culture of the ego. But, anxious as he was to assert all his singularity, he elaborated a style which strongly contrasts with all others and claimed to be independent artist. Thus, we tried to understand the logic which drove the man to write about himself and we wished to highlight the dialectic which binds intimacy with its literary reflection. To do so, it proved useful to follow the course led by Renard, from giving up realistic principles to a literature of observation; yet an openly subjective observation which embodied in an internalized image of real life. Nevertheless, self portraying is not reduces to the genre of the self-portrait. Privacy is relational and its representation necessarily includes the presence of others. However, intersubjectivity is ambivalent in Jules Renard. The other may appear as an alienating force, as an enemy to be mocked at or to charm, but also offers the opportunity to open out into friendship or love relationship admiration and even fraternization. Lastly, it seemed to us that private writing was a way for the writer to know himself but above all a way to amend morally, and to invent himself poetically in a lacunary and laconic form. The writer then approached his ideal of humour and invites his reader to become his fellow man, his brother in other words to be on intimate terms with him

Full textThis thesis employs a semiotic approach to delve into the metamorphosis of the fox in Chroniques de l’étrange. It is structured into four sections: the body, identity, space, and the visual. Representations of the fox in France and China are juxtaposed here, revealing the ins and outs of the creation, translation and criticism of this work. The exploration of the metamorphosis of body and identity involves analyzing a selection of stories known for their thematic significance. The specific settings within the 80 tales are systematically classified, underscoring three unique and characteristic realms: the illusory abode, the realm of dreams, and the mirror’s reflection. Visual semiotic analysis is executed on the illustrations alongside the cinematic adaptation, encapsulating the portrayal of mountains and water, interwoven with the influences of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. The semiotic theories from the Parisian school, including A. J. Greimas’s narrative program, the semiotic square, J. Fontanille’s discourse of passion, F. Rastier’s cultural semiotics, J. M. Floch’s semi-symbolic system, M. Hammad’s topology theory, C. Metz’s film semiotics, and A. Guillaume’s transferogenesis, internal geometry, and tri-triangularity, are harnessed within this context. This multidimensional theoretical framework enhances the breadth of French semiotics, fostering cultural dialogues between France and China. This thesis introduces an innovative semiotic methodology that encompasses literature, painting, cinema, and the broader realm of Chinese culture, thereby offering fresh perspectives for both semiotics and the interpretation of Chinese narratives

Full textThe componential and actantial analysis of the figurative use of the names of wild carnivores (with particular accent on the wolf, the fox, the otter and the badger) leads to a reflection on the origin of the semantic features and the generating mecanisms of the figurative meaning. The specificities of the animal image relativize the assumptions about the documentary value of the figures. The observation of the semantic effects of animal metaphor in the proverbs reveals the referential potentialities of the proverb's sense. An association of the philological methods with approaches of modern linguistics (componential analysis, prototype theory, lexicology inspired by Gustave Guillaume. . . ) makes it possible to refine the structural description of the sense. A study of the lexicalization leads to suggestions for the lexicographical treatment. Three satirical and moralising texts illustrate the stylistic functions of the predatory images

Full textThe author undertakes to lay the foundation of a poetics which enables. The understanding of the francophone poetic production of Creole poets of Mauritius, a multiracial and Plurilingual Island. The corpus comprises contemporary poets: d'Avoine, Fanchette, Maunick, Chasle, Renaud, Juste and Theodore. Studying the discourse, themes and rhetoric of these poets, the author probes into the fluctuating aspects which the concept of identity takes for these Creole poets rivalizing with the white French-speaking community. The theme of problematical black origins and the quest for dignity haunt the poetical discourse, which is often deliberately obscure. In his conclusion, the author elucidates the psycho-social functioning of that poetry (the work of art repairing the self and restoring a deeply wounded narcissistic image). To describe roughly the discourse rhetoric, he proposes to distinguish between a depressive phase using obscure language based upon the "he" pronoun and phallic phase using clear language based upon the i-you pronouns and aiming at narcissistic integrity. Finally, the diglossia-dysglossia concepts elaborated in sociolinguistics allow one to view a more hedonistic and critical literary instrument than alienating standard French for the islander: Creole, regional French, interlect
Poisson, Laure-amélie. "La simplicité dans l’œuvre narrative de Jules Renard." Thesis, Paris 4, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA040113.
Full textJules Renard’s ceaseless ambition is to try and be simple. Although his lack of imagination, which leads him to favour things that he saw and to draw on the sometimes narrow everyday life, reduces him to simplicity, he does not passively receive it but on the contrary ensures that blurring and reduction are key principles of his literary art. The first part of this thesis tackles with the writer’s theoretical and aesthetic questioning, understood in the literary landscape of the late fin de siècle. Even if Renard partly inherits the classic and realistic models, his simplicity is mostly built against realism’s and naturalism’s totalizing ambition, which suffocates the reality by covering it up with words. So as to solve the general crisis of the mimesis, the writer intends to build a bridge between language and reality. The second part of this work tries to single out the theoretical characteristics of the simple style. It shows that simplicity stands at the very center of Renard’s poetics, underlies choices related to the genre or the narration and implies both reduction and concentration, which is not easy to fulfill. Simplicity is not, on the other hand, a favourite topic with a linear development, but it triggers off a dynamic, dialectical and difficult process. The last part reveals its moral, practical and philosophical aspect. For simplicity is not for Renard an immediate matter of consciousness but a value which is to build and to defend politically. It is philosophically rooted in immediacy
