Kleijberg, Max. "An Ageless State of Mind." Thesis, Konstfack, Experience Design, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:konstfack:diva-4153.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the question: Can Experience Design be applied to create a perception shift from elderly as a burden to elderly as a resource for society? This is done by researching the social norms about ageing and the aged in Swedish society. To conduct this research I put together a focus group of 7 people with different professional backgrounds and ages ranging from 23 to 74. In four workshops I used design-led research methods to research these “mental models”. Using participatory theatre techniques we investigated the personal view of the ageing process. And through discussions and design thinking we articulated the often unspoken social norms. In the workshops we defined our current social norms regarding ageing as Aged Thinking. A counter philosophy was developed called Ageless Thinking. In order to create a change in mindset from Aged Thinking to Ageless Thinking a tool was developed called the Enticon. With this tool people can show what their focus is in life right now regardless of their chronological age. The Enticon was introduced at the Konstfack Spring Exhibition 2013 and also as a web based application.

McCallum, W. S. ""Caldochie" : a state of mind?" Thesis, University of Canterbury. French, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8660.

Full text
Abstract:
The loyalist political majority in New Caledonia is a group which has been largely neglected by academics and the media. Collectively, this majority has been attributed the status of a distinct community under the title "Caldochie". "Caldochie"- a state of mind? examines the diverse ethnic and social groups who support New Caledonia's continued status as an Overseas Territory within the French Republic. Chapter One discusses the various ethnic and social groups who support continued ties with France. Central to these groups are the Caldoches, inhabitants of European descent considered to be assimilated into the Territory. The presence of metropolitan French citizens in New Caledonia is also examined. As well as Europeans, other ethnic groups within New Caledonia also support French loyalism. Brief overviews are given of Melanesian, Polynesian and Asian loyalists along with their differing levels of involvement in loyalist party politics. Chapter Two concentrates on loyalist party politics in New Caledonia, which have some distinctive features and form a political backdrop of great complexity. The politics of the largest loyalist party, the RPCR, are discussed. Attention is also given to the FN(NC) and the FC, the two principal parties of the extreme right, and extra-legal right-wing extremist groups collectively described as the tentation ultra. The essay concludes by examining the validity of using the term "Caldochie" to describe New Caledonia's loyalists and concludes that this term is neither geographically, ethnically nor politically valid. Following the RPCR's signature of the 1988 Matignon Accords, mainstream loyalist support has been lent to the concept of a future New Caledonia in which both loyalists and indépendantistes might co-operate. Accordingly, the concept of an isolated loyalist community is no longer valid if indeed it ever was.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with social stratification of psychosocial factors and social position measurement in population samples collected in mid-Sweden 2000-2006. Traditional resource-based measures of social position (occupation, education) and so far less explored prestige-based measures (subjective status, status incongruence) are tested with respect to their associations with psychosocial factors, emotions, and selfrated health. Three papers in this thesis are based on data from the Life Conditions, Stress, and Health (LSH) study, using a randomly selected population sample. Data for the fourth paper is a regional sample drawn from the health-related survey “Liv och Hälsa 2000”. Statistical methods range from correlation analysis to logistic regression and repeated measures analyses. Results from studies I and IV show that psychosocial factors are unequally distributed within the population in a linear manner, so that the lower the socioeconomic position (SEP), the more unfavourable levels. This is independent of whether we study this in a highly unequal setting such as Russia, or in a more egalitarian society such as Sweden. The stability of psychometric instruments over two years tend to be lower for all instruments among low SEP groups, and differ significantly for self-esteem and perceived control among groups with high and low education, and for cynicism among groups with high and low occupational status. Results from studies II and III point to the relevance of individuals’ own thoughts about themselves, and the potential impact on the self by normative judgements of social position in a certain hierarchical setting. In paper II, the prestige-based measure of subjective status was influenced by resource-based measures, such as self-rated economy and education, but also by life satisfaction and psychosocial factors. The importance of self-evaluation was especially obvious from the study on status incongruence (study III) where the traditionally protective effecs of a high education seem to disappear when combined with a lowstatus occupation. Shaming experiences may play an important role here for our understanding of self-perception.

Munda, Brandon Wayne Dylan. "The Mind of the State and Thinking about Sex." W&M ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1477068554.

Abstract:
The Mind of the State Throughout the War of the Spanish Succession, European powers vied for supremacy, both on the Continent and across the Atlantic. This paper examines the English intelligence apparatus during this conflict. In so doing, it shows the extent to which intelligence shaped state functions during the conflict, and how understandings of intelligence and information in general influenced state understandings of the international stage and their approaches to conflict. Thinking About Sex In the early 1720s, the British state launched a series of raids against molly houses – social spaces patronized by homosexual men – across the country. This paper explores discursive developments from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries in an attempt to understand what allowed the British state to understand homosexual individuals and from what avenues they derived their authority. Ultimately, drawing upon Foucauldian analysis, the paper considers developments in intelligence as critical to state understandings of sex and sexuality during the period.

Abstract:
This investigation explored social cognition and emotional processing in people with Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Social and emotional processing difficulties are increasingly recognised as maintaining factors for the disorder and as having potential as treatment targets. but as yet the specific foci to target are unknown. In addition, comparisons between AN and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have long been drawn, and have recently been empirically demonstrated in the domains of executive dysfunction and weak central coherence. Assessment of an overlap in the area of poor social cognition that is characteristic of ASD has been neglected to date. Following a systematic review of social cognition research in AN, a battery of tasks was chosen to assess emotion recognition and emotional Theory of Mind (the ability to infer emotion based on context and content: eToM). Poor eToM was observed in people with AN (n=40) relative to those with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (n=45) and healthy controls (HC; n=47). These deficits were similar to those reported in the ASD literature. This finding led to further examination of whether such deficits represented traits or were restricted to the ill state.

Abstract:
Major advances in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques in the last two decades have provided a tool to better understand the functional organization of the brain both in health and illness. Despite such developments, characterizing regulation and cerebral representation of mind wandering, which occurs unavoidably during resting-state fMRI scans and may induce variability of the acquired data, remains a work in progress. Here, we demonstrate that a decrease or decoupling in functional connectivity involving the caudate nucleus, insula, medial prefrontal cortex and other domain-specific regions was associated with more sustained mind wandering in particular thought domains during resting-state fMRI. Importantly, our findings suggest that temporal and between-subject variations in functional connectivity of above-mentioned regions might be linked with the continuity of mind wandering. Our study not only provides a preliminary framework for characterizing the maintenance and cerebral representation of different types of mind wandering, but also highlights the importance of taking mind wandering into consideration when studying brain organization with resting-state fMRI in the future.

Callow, Christos. "Etherotopia, an ideal state and a state of mind : utopian philosophy as literature and practice." Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2015. http://bbktheses.da.ulcc.ac.uk/118/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the concept of Etherotopia (which literally translates to 'ethereal place'), by which I define the combination of utopian philosophy with certain ideas of individual perfection such as nirvana. The argument is made that the separation of utopian visions into social utopias and individual ones (states and states of mind) is a false dilemma, since a complete utopian theory should include both. In relation to my own utopian writing and as a transition from the critical to the creative part of this thesis, I examine the question of genre in utopian literature and, following from the view that literary genres are subjective and conventional, I argue that utopian literature doesn‘t need to be labelled as a literary genre but rather that it is utopian philosophy in literary form, and therefore philosophical writing. Having argued for the need of a contemporary Etherotopian theory and having discussed the relationship between utopian writing and genre, I proceed to introducing my portfolio of creative writing, a short story collection with the title Etherotopias, which is a series of diverse utopian/dystopian fictions that in some cases expand on the concept of Etherotopia either philosophically or aesthetically, while in other cases provide literary responses to conflicting utopian theories popular in contemporary society and its consumer culture. The collection is therefore a series of arguments and criticisms in the form of stories that range from political and satirical to religious and existential and address social issues as well as utopian and dystopian states of mind.

Stefanovitch, I. "Degree and accuracy of self-focused attention to body state and mind-state information in anxiety." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2006. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1445111/.

Full text
Abstract:
Heightened self-focused attention (SFA), a tendency to direct awareness to internal, self-referent information, has been implicated in a number of psychological disorders. This review concentrates on the theoretical and empirical validity of attempts to extend normative models of SFA (e.g. Duval & Wicklund, 1972 Carver & Scheier, 1978) to account for anxious states and anxiety disorders. It will be argued that existing models are too non-specific, with similar accounts having been put forward across different disorders, reducing the explanatory power of the framework. Therefore two novel distinctions will be put forward to attempt to meaningfully fractionate SFA. First, self-awareness may be directed to different parts of internal experience, in particular to body-state information or mental-state information, and therefore potentially maintain psychopathology in different ways. Second, a distinction can be made between the habitual tendency to engage SFA (or degree) and the precision with which this mechanism operates (or accuracy). Ways to validate these distinctions will be proposed and how such a model could potentially differentiate anxiety disorders from other forms of psychopathology considered.

Castillo-Garsow, Melissa Ann. "A Mexican State of Mind| New York City and the New Borderlands of Culture." Thesis, Yale University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10783442.

Full text
Abstract:

A Mexican State of Mind: New York City and the New Borderlands of Culture examines the cultural productions of Mexican migrants in New York City within the context of a system of racial capitalism that marginalizes Mexican migrants via an exploitative labor market, criminalizing immigration policy, and racialized systems of surveillance. I begin by juxtaposing three images: "Visible Border," from filmmaker Alex Rivera's The Borders Trilogy; the Brookes Ship, which still powerfully recalls the business of transatlantic slave trade and has been significant for visual artists working from the 1960s to the present; and "la Bestia" ("The Beast"), a freight train running the length of Mexico and frequently used by immigrants on their travels. Although Mexican migrants rarely cross the border in containers, shipping container consumerism is what has allowed for the re- commodification of brown bodies, post-slavery. As such it is not ironic that the original purpose of the Beast was to move standardized containers across the US-Mexico border, yet ended up as a tragic symbol of migrant desperation. Here, as in The Borders Trilogy, I find a through line to understanding the connection between traditional border crossing and historical Mexican settlement in the southwest and Chicago, and the development of Mexican migration to New York City in a post-NAFTA, post-9/11 world.

Inspired by a dialogue of the landmark works of Paul Gilroy and Gloria Anzaldüa, I develop an analytic framework which bridges Mexican diasporic experiences in New York City and the black diaspora, not as a comparison but in recognition that colonialism, interracial and interethnic contact through trade, migration, and slavery are connected via capitalist economies and technological developments that today manifest at least in part via the container. This spatial move is important, not just because Mexican migration is largely understudied in a New York--East Coast context, but because the Black Atlantic also emphasizes the long history and significance of New York as a capital of the slave trade. As the unearthing of the African burial ground in lower Manhattan in 1991 demonstrates, the financial center of New York is literally built on the bodies of black labor. Since the 1990s, it has been built on the backs of Mexican migrant labor.

As a result of these interventions, I find a rich and ever evolving movement toward creative responses to the containments of labor, illegality, and racial and anti-immigrant prejudice. In five chapters, I present a rich archive of both individual and collaborative expression including arts collectives, graffiti, muralism, hip hop crews, through which the majority young male Mexican population form social networks to cope with this modern-day form of "social death." The first chapter, "Mexican Manzana: The Next Great Migration" introduces the context of Mexican migration to New York City since the 1980s, focusing on the economic changes undergone by the city because of the adoption of the shipping container from an industrial economy to one focused on finance, real estate, and service. It also discusses NYC as an immigrant destination and outlines the characteristics of Mexican migrants and the conditions that greet them in their new destination. Particularly iconic to New York City is the restaurant industry for which the Mexican presence is both vital and largely invisible. Thus. Chapter two, "Solo Queremos el Respeto: Racialization of labor and hierarchal culture in the US Restaurant Industry," uses that industry as a case study of Mexican migrant containment, to explore active forms of resistance. Chapter three, "Hermandad, Arte y Rebeldia: Art Collectives and Entrepreneurship in Mexican New York" focuses on the development of arts entrepreneurship and successful collectively owned businesses such as tattoo parlors that double as arts spaces. The next chapter, "Yo Soy Hip Hop: Transnationaiisrn and Authenticity in Mexican New York," employs lyrical analysis of Mexican hip hop to explore alternative forms of identity making. The final chapter "Dejamos una huella: Claiming Space in a New Borderlands," describes the way Mexican migrants are claiming space and performing a politics of anti-deportation via the aggressive visibility of graffiti. Consequently, in loosening the bounds of border and mexicanidad, I find new identities that take surprising shapes. And following my subjects on the long journey to and within the Atlantic Borderlands, they teach me the significance of blackness in Mexican lives as well as black scholarship in Chicano/a and migration studies. Here, there is so much more than comparison – rather it is a rich flow of ideas that no border could ever impede.

Abstract:
The prohibition on the use of child soldiers is widely recognized. Still, it is estimated that 60,000 children were abducted and forced to take part in the internal armed conflict between the Lord’s Resistance Army and the Government of Uganda. Thus, this study examines how the formerly abducted children have experienced their return and reintegration. The thesis is based on a minor field study conducted in Gulu and aims at investigating whether the provision of remedies aids or hinders their reintegration. Using theories of recognition and a conceptualization of successful reintegration, I analyze the semi-structured interviews with fourteen former abductees and ten other community members. The findings suggest that the process of return is fraught with many challenges. It is concluded that the absence of symbolic and material reparations is an obstacle to successful reintegration and sustainable peace as the lack of recognition can drive future social conflict in Uganda.

Peplow, Stephen. "What causes a cabinet to change its mind? the British farmer and the state 1818-2004." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/895.

Full text
Abstract:
The two centuries from 1818 to 2004 cover profound social and economic changes in what was, for much of the period, the most powerful country in the world. Britain led the way in moving capital and labour out of agriculture and into newer industries, such as coal-mining, textiles and transportation. The changes were accompanied by deep institutional changes, especially in the franchise. The rate of change is remarkable: within seventy years Britain was almost completely democratic, in contrast to the 'rotten boroughs' and virtual feudalism of the pre- 1832 unreformed Parliaments. The changes are mirrored in the role given to agriculture within society, and in particular the amount and type of economic rent transferred from the consumer and the taxpayer to the farmer. This thesis uses two centuries of data and 'survival analysis' statistical techniques to show that Olson's celebrated theory of collective action can be substantiated in a dynamic context. I show that as the share of farmers in the workforce diminishes, and their relative wealth shrinks, the probability of the Cabinet increasing protection grows. The reverse is also the case, showing that the Cabinet responds positively to pressures from a group whose utility was diminishing.

Abstract:
The focus of this research is on the development of a real time application that uses a low cost EEG headset to measure a player's state of mind while they play a video game. Using data collected using the Emotiv EPOC headset, various EEG processing techniques are tested to find ways of measuring a person's engagement and arousal levels. The ability to measure a person's engagement and arousal levels provide an opportunity to develop a model that monitor a person's flow while playing video games. Identifying when certain events occur, like when the player dies, will make it easier to identify when a player has left a state of flow. The real time application Brainwave captures data from the wireless Emotiv EPOC headset. Brainwave converts the raw EEG data into more meaningful brainwave band frequencies. Utilizing the brainwave frequencies the program trains multiple machine learning algorithms with data designed to identify when the player dies. Brainwave runs while the player plays through a video gaming monitoring their engagement and arousal levels for changes that cause the player to leave a state of flow. Brainwave reports to researchers and developers when the player dies along with the identification of the players exit of the state of flow.

Eldred, Christopher P. "The Stable American Mind: Understanding Attitudes Towards Government and Taxes, 1990-2011." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2011. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/255.

Full text
Abstract:
As the federal government seeks ways to stimulate our economy and reduce our national debt, understanding public attitudes on the role and size of government and the taxes that support it is important. This thesis evaluates how US public opinion towards government and taxes has changed from 1990 to the present, and analyzes several potential causes for changes that have occurred. It is intended to be an update of William G. Mayer’s 1992 book entitled The Changing American Mind, which analyzed changing public opinion from 1960-1988. In following his analysis, the causes I have analyzed are generational replacement, fiscal and economic indicator data, and important political events. Through and examination of public polling data from the last twenty years, I have concluded that attitudes fluctuated relatively mildly on these issues since 1990. My analysis reveals that generational replacement exerted little influence on opinions. However, analysis also reveals that major changes in fiscal and economic indicator data and various major policy initiatives induced the greatest swings in public opinion of the last two decades. I believe that these changes reflect that American aggregate opinion remains constructed on a post-Ronald Reagan ideological foundation, whose features include an inherent suspicion of government and resistance to taxes. Understanding this is crucial to understanding the nation’s political trajectory.

Lawson, Reid Marguerite Elizabeth. "The mother's state of mind following the loss of a baby and the birth of the next infant." Thesis, University of East London, 2003. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/3751/.

Full text
Abstract:
The mother's state of mind following the loss of a baby and the birth of the next infant. This thesis focuses on the maternal state of mind following the birth of a baby when there has been a previous loss, either through late miscarriage, stillbirth or the death of a small child. Interest in this area developed following individual psychoanalytic psychotherapeutic interventions with children whose birth followed the previous loss of an infant. These children were deeply troubled; they perceived their mother's mind as being full of the dead baby, they appeared haunted by the loss and to be struggling with their sense of identity. Research has, in recent years, acknowledged that women require emotional support following the birth of the next baby. This project explores the mother's state of mind from the perspective of psychoanalytic thinking. There was a wish to consider both the effect of the loss on the mother's inner world and the meaning for the mother of her dead infant and her new baby. The design of the research project was based on an open ended psychoanalytic psychotherapeutic intervention. The research group included three mothers and their babies. The women were referred to a hospital service for psychological help when professionals were concerned about the women's mental health, either during late pregnancy or the earliest months of the new baby's life. The research showed that mothers were overwhelmed by persecutory anxiety and knew they had not recovered from the loss of their baby. There was evidence that the mothers were still grieving and there was little sense that a lost baby could ever be replaced.

Jahner, Erik Erwin. "Resting as Knowing| A Lagged Structure Analysis of Resting State fMRI with Application to Mind Wandering during Oral Reading." Thesis, University of California, Riverside, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10680604.

Abstract:

The human brain is an ongoing dynamic system not activated by experience but nudged from intrinsic activity into new network configurations during perception and learning. Ongoing neural activity during rest is assumed to reflect these intrinsic dynamics in a relatively closed system state. Traditionally, inter-regional connectivity in this system is measured by obtaining time-locked correlations in BOLD activity using fMRI. It is well documented, however, that neural activity unfolds across time and is not isolatent to some reference point.

This exploratory study is a theoretical analysis of how a lagged analysis of resting state dynamics in fMRI could represent persistent representations of knowledge in the neocortex. A novel procedure using both surface based maps and independent component analysis (ICA) is applied to a small group of 54 adolescents. The ICA methods appear to reveal lagged structures with different information than traditional resting state analysis. The group level results are symmetrical between hemispheres and may represent high level perceptual systems.

The components obtained from this exploration are then used to attempt understand how these knowledge systems in neocortex frame mind-wandering frequency when reading aloud in a subset of 38 individuals. The results did not correlate with any known neural systems related to mind wandering, but the methods here are unique. One of the identified components shows significant difference in the lag structure of the occipital cortex as a function of mind wandering frequency during oral reading. This demonstrates that it may be worth exploring the timing in visual system to understand why individuals mind wander when reading aloud. Reverse inference is used to interpret results and suggest future approaches.

Abstract:
Global education is founded upon numerous theoretical frameworks. In this thesis, following a review of relevant literature, I will carefully consider Pike and Selby's (1995) four-dimensional model of global education. Although I regard theirs as the most promising of recent conceptualizations, it doesn't seem to provide a clear articulation of the specifics of their four dimensions, as well as the way in which these can be fostered in learners. In an attempt to address this incompleteness, I will turn to global communications pioneer Marshall McLuhan whose discussion of the global village contains key concepts and definitions that may provide more specific language for the individual's relationship to the local and the global. Moreover, his ideas regarding the intersection of culture, technology, and the arts within the global village, illuminated by the work of artist Char Davies, can help situate the arts within a newly conceptualized theoretical foundation for global education.

Abstract:
This bachelor thesis examine how the early hip-hop music mirrors the society in the US ghettos in the 80s and 90s in order to explore how the artists' individual experiences take the expression in artistic form of coherent discourse on public issues. It uses structural textual analysis thatencode and analyze lyrics from ten hip-hop songs. The material was studied with the help of Elias and Scotsons theories established and outsiders, Bourdieu's capital types, field and habitus, and postcolonial theory that Eriksson, Eriksson Baaz and Thorn highlights in there book GlobaliseringensKulturer. The survey shows that the songs we analyzed tells of similar problems, which we divided into five themes: crime, poverty, ideals, discrimination and depression. In this way, we concluded that there are common patterns in the songs we chose. In conclusion, the study shows that the analyzed songs express the artists’, both individual problems such as depression, poverty, criminality in an artistic form. But also other issues such as discrimination and racism in a larger level.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of the symptom of delusions and the factors that are deemed important in determining their outcome. The thesis consists of three parts. Firstly, I present a systematic literature review concerning the factors that have been found to be predictive of outcome in people who experience delusions as part of psychosis. This review covers 47 studies, the majority of which employ quantitative methodology. Holding a diagnosis of schizophrenia and the presence of other positive symptoms were found to be strongly predictive factors. The influence of social factors as opposed to phenomenological and clinical factors in predicting outcome was also emphasised. Secondly, I present a qualitative study of the experiences of 10 participants who described themselves as being "recovered" from their delusions. An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis approach is taken and 17 themes were identified as representative of the groups' shared experiences. The themes converged with previous literature in emphasising that recovery is a process which impacts upon mood, self-identity and social relationships; that isolation maintains distress and that occupation seems to promote recovery: that interactions with others are valued but also difficult; and that recovery entails loss but also reinvention, growth, enlightment and pride. It was concluded that clinicians should facilitate the appraisals of those in recovery as accomplishments and self-development and focus on individualised recovery plans. Thirdly, the final part of the thesis is a critical appraisal of the empirical study and focuses on the issues involved in judging whether qualitative research is of good quality and has good validity.

Savsar, Leyla. "Outside the Nation, Inside the Melancholic State(s) of Mind| Re-thinking the Rhetoric of Displacement and Re-membering the Immigrant Experience in Transnational Literature." Thesis, State University of New York at Binghamton, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=13422228.

Full text
Abstract:

Wanderers in the spaces of their memories and the streets of their would-be homes, generations of suffering immigrants are traced back to the past, propelled by the crescendo of melancholic stillness that moves displaced bodies through states of in-betweenness that both dispels and teeters on the far side of either assimilation or exclusion. Many transnational narratives situate the immigrant at a crossroads in terms of a loss of the ‘original’ culture in exchange for the new ‘American’ culture, where national diversities are confined to a singular framework and rhetoric of displacement, overruled by the myth of successful assimilation, whereby the hardships of adjusting to foreign spaces are ‘normalized’ and reduced to a series of trials. This portrayal, in turn, does not leave any room for the rhetoric of pain, or what I label as the ‘migrant’s mourning’, where the immigrant’s suffering is suppressed and eclipsed by a collective history of racial abjection. Insights into the psyche of the immigrant serve to map the hedge between the past and the present and absolute versus relative spaces. Applying psychoanalytical and postcolonial frameworks to literary analysis, this dissertation explores some of the prominent transnational narratives to establish that the melancholic dynamics of space, memory, and language can subvert misrepresentations and grant the immigrant mobility within the confines of homogenized spaces. It seeks to explore the ways in which the transnational American narrative employs melancholic tenor as aesthetics to empower displaced figures. Situating its protagonists at the locus of nations, these narratives underscore melancholia, mourning, and memory as tools and protocols of agency that challenge the myth of assimilation and re-think the rhetoric of displacement.

Robinson, James Alexander 4th. "Black Studies definitions: an archive, a year of promise, and a conceptual approach." Diss., University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5987.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation, Black Studies Definitions, examines the varied ways that Black Studies has been defined in the United States of America. Investigating the definitions found in college/university catalogues, foundation reports, encyclopedias, dictionaries, textbooks, scholarly articles/books, and the popular press, I suggest that the definitional difficulties surrounding this field can be clarified by considering the archive of these materials, the significance of “the year of promise,” 1968-1969, and a conceptual approach to the discipline. Quite often, observations about Black Studies are grounded in references to limited primary sources. By unearthing and extracting statements about the field from fifty years of materials, “Black Studies Definitions” suggests the inadequacy of such formulations and provides a resource for systematically researching Black Studies. The year of promise has been noted as an important historical landmark; however, its role in the development of Black Studies has not been comprehended accurately. Presenting selected texts that were written during this span, this dissertation identifies 1968-1969 as a vital developmental phase in Black Studies. It does so by using select texts written by the higher education establishment and by intellectuals to abstract key words and kernel elements that provide a basis for defining the discipline. Finally, “Black Studies Definitions” uses a conceptual approach to offer a provisional definition of the field. Addressing more than forty years of unsatisfying efforts, this dissertation points towards techniques that can lay the foundation for a fruitful future in the discipline. My dissertation is an interdisciplinary analysis that aims at a better understanding of Black Studies in higher education. After compiling and analyzing earlier definitions of Black Studies, I noted that these statements were often incomplete. These incomplete statements produced confusion surrounding the identity of the field; however, they also contained details that could provide a fuller understanding of Black Studies. Inquiring into the core concepts of the field, I discovered that Black Studies, which was a new discipline circa 1968, inspired definitions that included a few recurring keywords. My research attempts to determine when and how these keywords appear in materials defining the discipline. By charting such patterns in definitions of Black Studies, I lay the groundwork for a more careful chronicling of the different phases in the field’s public presentation. This kind of chronicling suggests that a conceptual approach to defining the discipline proves fruitful. Despite the proliferation of Black Studies programs between 1968 and 2017, academicians have yet to agree on what is included or excluded from this field. “Black Studies Definitions” addresses this situation with three crucial interventions. My work presents a bibliography of more than one thousand texts that engage the definition of this field. My research establishes 1968-1969 as a revelatory era in identifying the core concepts that underlie Black Studies. Finally, my dissertation illustrates that a conceptual approach provides a fruitful basis for defining this field. Specifically, it argues that Black Studies is a branch of the interdisciplinary human sciences that probe the relations between a state of mind, people and language.

Abstract:

Faced with an economic context where the presence of financial institutions is of paramount importance, mainly for ensuring the maintenance of financial services, it is noted that the assistance provided by internal audit to financial institutions have a key role in proper development of them and therefore the very economy as a whole, due to its role of checking that the procedures adopted in relation to standards and internal controls. But is the control characteristic of the internal audit activity, is at fault or pointing the involuntary image of your paper arising from past practices of internal audit supervision and punishment, it is considered the possibility of auditee have fear or other negative feelings associated internal audit which will influence your decision making capability in the company, which indirectly reflected in the relationship between internal audit and the auditee parties and consequently influence the behavior of employees. Given the aforementioned context, the need to check: How the perception of internal audit affect the mood of the auditee? The theoretical framework of this study addressed the objectives and the performance of internal audit, the process of perception and the composition of moods. Methodologically the research was mixed, with quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data were collected using closed questionnaires, with questions organized into three dimensions: cognitive (what is known about the role of the auditor), affective (feelings associated with the audit situation) and behavioral (the experience that has with auditing situations). The sample consisted of 121 respondents employees of a unit of the Federal Savings Bank. Data were analyzed using descriptive and multivariate statistics. The results showed that the mood of the auditee was related to cognitive, behavioral and affective aspects, obtained by multiple linear regression equation involving the three referenced aspects. Qualitative data showed that in general, as the vision of four internal auditors, there was a change in the perception of the auditee for the internal audit and over the years this image of supervision and punishment in relation to the internal audit, gradually is losing their strength; which reinforced the results of quantitative research, it was shown a balance in the state of mind of the auditee, regardless of the presence of internal audit or the time since the last audit. It was the need of managers, the case study, clarifies the audit programs and the criteria used by the auditors, as they were not clear to auditee, which would contribute to the inter-relationship and collaboration between internal auditors and auditee and accelerate the reduction of significantly surveillance image.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses early modern European perceptions of body and soul in association with the increasing stringency of civilized behaviour and state formation in an effort to provide motivation for the increased severity of the witch hunts of that time. Both secondary and primary sources have been used, in particular the contemporary demonologies by such authors as Bodin, and Kramer and Sprenger. The thesis is divided into five chapters, including an Introduction and Conclusion. The body of the thesis focuses on religious, scientific, and secular beliefs (Ch. 2), appearance and characteristics of witches (Ch. 3), and the activities and behaviours/actions of witches, (Ch. 4). This study concentrates on the similarities found across Europe, and, as the majority of witches persecuted were female, my thesis emphasizes women as victims of the witch hunts.

Abstract:
Bodies - be they fleshy or other - are simultaneously made by, made of, moved by, and the makers and movers of other bodies. Driven by the questions how do bodies emerge? what makes bodies move? and what can bodies do? bodies are placed at the very centre of this book in order to explain and show, not only how such bodily making and re-making - (re)making - and movement is done, but also why awareness and understanding of the processes and practices involved in the continual and ongoing (re)making and moving of bodies - of three particular kinds in particular (bodies of power/knowledge, humanised bodies, and bodies politic) - is vital to the study of international relations, conflict, and security and thus to the discipline of International Relations (IR). In short, bodies - of these three kinds in particular - require foregrounding because international relations, conflicts, and security practices are conducted by, on, and for bodies (humanised bodies and bodies politic in particular), according to bodies (namely referred to as dominant bodies of power/ knowledge, which become fleshed out as material bodies including humanised bodies and bodies politic and enact statecraft, further down the line). Moreover, as demonstrated in this book, which takes up the broad empirical case of post-9/11 American body politics and two case studies into the visual body politics of suffering and dead American soldiers since 9/11 and the 2013 Camp Delta hunger strike, there is much to be gained by taking the very particular embodiments of bodies into account, as every body is unique and it is according to distinctive bodily features, malaise/ailments, and feelings that bodies are moved to act (and in turn touch and move other bodies) and continually become other than they are.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Deriving from Dada and surrealism, the Panic group, made up of Fernando Arrabal, Roland Topor and Alejandro Jodorowsky, was created in 1962. The evolution of Jodorowsky's artistic practice from 1962 to 2016 is rich in teachings on theatrical performance and the interaction between theatre and cinema. We agree with the observation made by Joseph Danan in Entre théâtre et performance: la question du texte that from a "dramaturgical state of mind" evoked by Bernard Dort has succeeded a "performative state of mind" on the contemporary scene. Jodorowsky's work is crossed by this "performative state of mind", from his "panic ephemera" that he realised between 1962 and 1967, to his "panic theatre" and his "essential theatre" and his cinema. The analysis of the ephemera, temporally and essentially close of the first historical performances, makes it possible to highlight the characteristics of the performance which can pass in other artistic forms. Before the presentation of a performance is implicitly a pact between the performers and the spectators. This "performance pact", corresponding to the expectations and beliefs of the performance spectator, is based on three points: the involvement of the artist himself in his work, the uniqueness of the performance and the realization of real acts. With our study we are able to see how these three points, while adapting to the art in which they are brought, constitute the core of the "performative state of mind" that runs through the whole of Jodorowsky's work
