This thesis is concerned with the question as to how to present the study of religion to students in religious education (RE) in schools that reflects a distinctively religious character but not a confessional one. It recognises that how religion is conceptualised in RE and the search for a distinctive rationale that reflects the subject’s nature and purpose, has been a contested question over the history of the subject in state maintained schools since the Education Act of 1870. More recently, criticism of what has been termed ‘modern liberal RE’ has focused on the claim that, in many instances, the subject has misrepresented religion, by being guilty of essentialism and in denying students opportunities to engage with the ‘truth claims’ of religions. It is within this context that this thesis argues that a nuanced understanding of John Hick’s religious interpretation of religion can positively illuminate these debates by providing a second order explanatory framework for the study of religion in RE.

This Masters dissertation aims to address the dynamism of human reception and the listening to one another as necessary conditions for the existence of interreligious dialogue, presenting its relationships, concepts, developments and limitations. It analyzes the understanding of interreligious dialogue, recognizing and respecting the diversity of cultures and religious traditions, valuing the right to difference that provides friendly coexistence of people of different creeds and customs. This dialogue can be seen as a challenge which depends on real disposition of openness, supported in respect and attention to all creeds, breaking down barriers of intolerance. To do so, it demonstrates the need to understand the other's being as a place of freedom and expression.
Esta dissertação de mestrado tem como objetivo abordar o dinamismo do acolhimento humano e da escuta do outro como pressupostos necessários para a existência do diálogo inter-religioso, apresentando suas relações, conceitos, desdobramentos e limitações. Analisa a compreensão do diálogo inter-religioso, reconhecendo e respeitando a diversidade de culturas e tradições religiosas, valorizando o direito a diferença que proporciona a coexistência amigável de pessoas de diferentes credos e costumes. Esse diálogo pode ser visto como um desafio por depender de uma disposição real de abertura, apoiado no respeito e na atenção a todos os credos, rompendo barreiras de intolerâncias. Para tanto, demonstra a necessidade da compreensão do ser do outro, como lugar de liberdade e expressão.

The objective of this Master’s research project was to examine religious dialogue from the point of view of multi-religious families and different faith-based organizations. This research attempted to raise awareness of the multiple benefits of religious dialogue society-wise, of the general diversity of faith-based systems and of the role that multi-religious families play. Furthermore, it was studied how different faith-based organizations and other societal factors relate to multi-religious families, and how these relationships could be improved. This is a qualitative research, to which a few quantitative elements were included. These elements were implemented in the two online surveys that were used for the collection of data, as well as during the data handling process. In addition to a comprehensive analysis on religious dialogue, this research considered the concepts of faith and ethnomethodology. These three underlying theories did not only support the research findings, but were actively used as the basis for the development of the surveys and their analysis. Although this research was based on a Finnish context, it can easily be generalized to any given society because of its impartial and universal basis. The surveys were designed together with a Finnish NGO called Familia ry, and the findings of this research will be used to help them develop their future work.

The violence of Aum Shinrikyo has had four observable consequences for new religious movements in Japan: a change in posture by the Japanese government toward new religious movements, stricter laws and regulations regarding new religious movements and tighter enforcement of those laws, a growing skepticism by the media and scholars towards new religious movements, and increasing skepticism about new religions movements among community groups and the public at large. This study will show that the crimes of Aum Shinrikyo have created a shift in Japan's society resulting in a contraction of operational space available to Japan's new religious movements.
For this study `operational space' refers to the sociopolitical boundaries in which a group can operate, in other words, a religion's freedom to believe, practice, organize, and conduct economic activities free from government restriction and undue influence by other individuals or groups.
The proposed thesis will be illustrated by several case studies that look specifically at particular instances of contraction of operational space for Japanese new religious movements including Soka Gakkai, Hono-hana Sanpogyo, The Unification Church of Japan (Toitsu Kyokai) and Panawave Laboratory. Each case study will analyze how interactions between Japanese new religions movements and aspects or segments of Japanese society have changed due to a paradigm shift caused by the crimes of Aum.
The thesis is supported by a theoretical framework that draws on theories of Japanese new religious movements and theories of religion and violence. The research builds upon this framework through in-depth study of writings by leaders of Japanese new religious movements (particularly the writings of Aum leader Asahara Shoko, Japanese and Western scholarship on new religious movements, as well as government documents, media reports, personal interviews and field observations to produce a unique analysis of the Post-Aum Era for Japan's new religious movements.

Previous literature shows an overwhelmingly positive relationship between religiosity and health. Researchers theorize that service attendance, social capital, and group identity verification mediates this positive relationship. There is an upward trend in secularity in the U.S. with more individuals describing themselves as spiritual but not religious (SBNR).Current research does not clearly depict who comprises the SBNR or how varying degrees of secularity fit into the relationship between religion and health. Using data from the GSS, this study examines basic sociodemographic characteristics of the SBNR and compares the SBNR to other religious and secular groups on various health measures. This study finds that the SBNR are younger, unmarried, and more educated than others, and the SBNR fare better on some measures of health. Future research should investigate the potential protective health factors of being SBNR and how this fits into the overall relationship between religion and health.

This work is a reflection on the religious education in public schools in Goiás. We looked in on the concept of secularism as a fundamental principle of democratic governments and Re-publicans on the relationship of this principle within the Brazilian public school and all de-rived implications there. Religion is an integral element in building the identity of a people and understood as a sym-bolic system practices and beliefs relating to the invisible world of supernatural beings. Therefore, the History of Religions is also the result of social, political and economic estab-lished in a society. Faced with a series of thematic alternative, we made the deliberate choice to meet more fully the guiding material for religious education classes in public schools: the curriculum. Also examine the set of pageants, cultural, social and policies that guided the presence of religious education in public schools in Brazil. Understand the religious culture of a people is key to understanding its history. We seek to investigate the school's relationship with their social environment and social contradictions that manifest themselves in the strug-gle for a democratic school for all. The initial conflict presented in the subject of questioning part of a hypothetical-deductive reasoning. With its commitment to work is to help the Religious Education teachers from public schools in the state of Goiás can expand their benchmarks for the recognition of cultural diversity, ethnic-racial and religious that compose the Brazilian society through the curriculum. The suggested educational product is a proposed curriculum for religious education in high school under a new nomenclature: History of Religions, with input from other areas of knowledge such as history, sociology, philosophy, art, geography and language.
O presente trabalho faz uma reflexão sobre o Ensino Religioso nas escolas públicas estaduais em Goiás. Debruçamo-nos sobre o conceito de laicidade como um princípio fundamental de governos democráticos e republicanos, sobre a relação desse princípio dentro da escola públi-ca brasileira e todas as implicações derivadas daí. A religião é um elemento integrante na construção da identidade de um povo e compreendido como um sistema de práticas simbólicas e de crenças relativas ao mundo invisível dos seres sobrenaturais. Assim sendo, a História das Religiões é também o resultado das relações soci-ais, políticas e econômicas estabelecidas numa sociedade. Diante de uma série de alternativas temáticas, fizemos a opção intencional em conhecer mais a fundo o material norteador para as aulas de Ensino Religioso na rede pública: o currículo. Analisar também o conjunto das repre-sentações históricas, culturais, sociais e políticas que orientaram a presença do Ensino Religi-oso na escola pública no Brasil. Compreender a cultura religiosa de um povo é fundamental para compreender a sua história. Buscamos investigar as relações da escola com o seu entorno social e as contradições sociais que se manifestam na luta por uma escola democrática para todos. O conflito inicial apresentado na problematização do tema parte de um raciocínio hipo-tético-dedutivo. O empenho deste trabalho é colaborar para que os professores de Ensino Religioso da rede pública estadual do Estado de Goiás possam ampliar seus padrões de referência pelo reconhe-cimento da diversidade cultural, étnico-racial e religiosa que compõe a sociedade brasileira por meio do currículo. O produto educacional sugerido é uma proposta curricular para o Ensi-no Religioso no Ensino Médio sob uma nova nomenclatura: História das Religiões, com apor-te de outras áreas do conhecimento como História, Sociologia, Filosofia, Arte, Geografia e Linguagem.

Most of the existing research on relationships between counselling and religion has addressed how practitioners provide services to religious clients or on strategies for working with people from specific religious traditions. The focus of this study is on how counselling professionals’ religious identity may impact on their clinical work. All the participants had at least one year of post-qualification experience working with religious and non-religious clients. Nine participants (6 female and 3 males) were interviewed and the data were analysed using a social constructionist version of Grounded Theory. This gave rise to four different yet highly related sub-categories. These were as follows: 1) Meaning making: Identity within the context of religion, 2) Keeping my faith life and my psychotherapy life separate, 3) Disclosure: The Unavoidable Blend between Religion and Counselling, 4) The Impact on Therapy. The findings of this study suggest that there is a tension in the way counselling professionals are managing their religious identity within their professional environment (i.e. training, supervision and counselling room). This tension seems to be centred on a need to protect their religious self from challenges imposed by professional colleagues, and a need, at least for some participants, to use the counselling room to reinforce their religious beliefs. While some participants have consciously chosen to keep their religious self out of the therapy room, others emphasise this split between religious and professional self is not possible when it comes to their counselling practice. The participants’ need to protect themselves from potential negative judgment was identified as a complex phenomenon that formed the basis of the core category ‘Protection’. The findings have added a novel perspective in recognising the impact a counselling practitioner’s religious beliefs has on their clinical, supervisory and training experiences.

Thesis (MPhil (Political Science))--Stellenbosch University, 2006.Sudan, Africa’s largest country has been plagued by civil war for more than fifty years. The war broke out before independence in 1956 and the last round of talks ended in a peace agreement early in 2005. The war started as a war between two different religions embedded in different cultures. The Islamic government constitutionalised their religious beliefs and imposed them on the whole country. This triggered heavy reaction from the Christian and animist people in the South. They were not willing to adhere to strict marginalising Islamic laws that created cleavages in society. The Anya-Anya was the first rebel group to violently oppose the government and they fought until the Addis Ababa peace accord that was reached in 1972. After the peace agreement there was relative peace before the government went against the peace agreement and again started enforcing their religious laws on the people in the South. This new wave of Islamisation sparked renewed tension between the North and the south that culminated in Dr John Garang and his SPLM/A restarting the conflict with the government in 1982. This war between the SPLA and the government lasted 22 years and only ended at the beginning of 2005. The significance of this second wave in the conflict is that it coincided with the discovery of oil in the South. Since the discovery of oil the whole focus of the war changed and oil became the centre around which the war revolved. Through this research I intend to look at the significance of oil in the conflict. The research question: how religious is Sudan’ Religious war? asks the question whether resources have become more important than religion.

Recentemente si sta sviluppando, all’interno della ricerca sulle religioni, un interesse per il variegato ambito della educazione concernente la religione – indicato col termine generico Religious Education - specialmente nelle scuole pubbliche. In particolare, cominciano a vedere la luce lavori di natura normativa che discutono su come impostare un insegnamento pubblico non confessionale e basato sullo studio accademico delle religioni. Il presente lavoro intende riflettere sul ruolo che il tema delle religioni est-asiatiche può assumere in tal senso.
A questo scopo si individuano e discutono temi e concetti rilevanti relativi allo studio teorico delle religioni, alla didattica, all’educazione interculturale, nonché taluni aspetti, ritenuti chiave, dello studio delle religioni est-asiatiche. Quale pietra di paragone in tema di Religious Education, si considera e analizza il case-study dell’Inghilterra, generalmente considerata la più sviluppata in tema di insegnamento su base non confessionale.
Attraverso il confronto tra il case-study e una discussione interdisciplinare dei diversi ambiti sopracitati, si intende mostrare come il tema delle religioni est-asiatiche possa rivelare problematiche nascoste, potenziare il raggiungimento di taluni obiettivi e proporre nuove prospettive. Allo stesso tempo, si intende organizzare tali osservazioni in un quadro teorico-pratico per future concrete applicazioni del tema delle religioni est-asiatiche all’interno di una Religious Education non confessionale, basata sullo studio accademico delle religioni e con una prospettiva di educazione interculturale.

Este trabalho tem como foco o estudo da Fraternidade Cósmica Universal, um grupo sediado na cidade de Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. O grupo realiza encontros entre segmentos religiosos e não religiosos, promovendo o conhecimento, a interação e o diálogo entre as diversas tradições. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi compreender essa dinâmica. Para sua execução foram realizadas visitas ao grupo, observações, participações em suas atividades e entrevistas com seus membros efetivos e visitantes. O resultado encontra-se organizado em três capítulos. No primeiro capítulo serão abordados o diálogo inter-religioso no atual contexto do pluralismo, a questão da identidade, da busca pelo sentido e as novas configurações religiosas. No segundo capítulo serão apresentados a criação e o histórico do grupo, as atividades desenvolvidas pela casa, a dinâmica dos encontros e os espaços físicos onde ocorrem. O terceiro capítulo apresentará os personagens envolvidos nesse processo, suas trajetórias até o grupo e as funções que desempenham na construção de um espaço para o exercício do diálogo inter-religioso e na formação de uma identidade para o grupo. A análise final apresentará os elementos desta dinâmica do diálogo inter-religioso que ocorre na Fraternidade Cósmica Universal.
This research focuses on the study of the Fraternidade Cósmica Universal, a group headquartered in the city of Petropolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The group set up meetings between religious and non-religious segments, promoting knowledge, interaction and dialogue between different traditions. The purpose of this work was to understand this dynamics. For its implementation, visits were done to the group, observations, participation in activities and interviews with its members and visitors. The result of this research is organized into three chapters. In the first chapter will be addressed interfaith dialogue in the current context of pluralism, the question of identity, the search for meaning and new religious settings. In the second chapter will be presented the creation and history of the group, the activities of the home, the dynamics of the meetings and the physical spaces in which they occur. The third chapter introduces the characters involved in this process, their trajectories to the group and the roles they play in the construction of a space for the exercise of interfaith dialogue and the formation of an identity for the group. The final analysis will present the elements of the dynamics of interfaith dialogue that occurs in Fraternidade Cósmica Universal.

Introduction Studies examining outcome in schizophrenia have either not considered religion as a relevant variable; or else they have failed to disentangle religious delusions from normal religious beliefs. Method. The measures were developed. The psychometric properties of the Religious Life Inventory modified for use in patients with schizophrenia were examined (study 1). A reliable categorisation procedure was developed for separating religious delusions from normal religious beliefs. A cross sectional investigation (study 2) established the prevalence of religious delusions, and categorised them into meaningful categories. Response to treatment and satisfaction with treatment was evaluated (in study 3) using a quasi-experimental approach. Results. The prevalence of religious delusions was 24%. The most common examples were the delusion of being God or Jesus and the interpretation of an auditory hallucination to be the voice of God or the Devil. Religious delusions were most commonly found in religious people, especially those who have had alterations in their level of religiosity in the past and who hallucinated. Those with religious delusions had higher scores on psychotic symptom measures than those who did not have religious delusions on admission. There was no difference between the religiously deluded and not religiously deluded, or religious and not religious patients in their response to routine treatment. Conclusion Religiosity is not a relevant factor in response to routine treatment for patients with schizophrenia.

Esta tese desenvolve o conceito de butinagem religiosa, a fim de entender como a mobilidade religiosa e a pluralização ocorrem no Brasil, especialmente no campo mediúnico já que até agora as explicações para o sincretismo não explicam satisfatoriamente como isso ocorre. Examinando como praticantes religiosos praticarm ao longo da história e da cultura eu identifico um tipo de experiência que escapa à estrutura estabelecida, tradição e cultura. Isso esclarece os processos sincréticos. Os dados foram coletados a partir de observação participante, entrevistas, jornais e biografias. Eu construo o conceito de butinagem religiosa a partir de uma metáfora das religiões ayahuasqueiras. O praticante religioso comparado a um beija-flor butina de uma denominação religiosa a outra produzindo sincretismo. Esta tese de doutorado é de alguma forma uma continuação da minha tese de mestrado intitulada "Entre a rosa e o beija-flor: um estudo antropológico de trajetórias na União do Vegetal (UDV) e no Santo Daime".This thesis develops the concept of religious butinage in order to understand what form of religious mobility and pluralization occur in Brazil, especially in the mediumistic field, since so far the explanations for syncretism do not satisfactorily explain as it occurs. By examining how religious practitioners practice throughout history and culture I identify some kind of experience that escapes the established structure, tradition and culture. It clarifies the syncretic processes. Data have been collected from participant observation, interviews, newspapers, and biographies. I build up the concept of religious butinage by a metaphor from ayahuasca religions. The religious practitioner compared with a hummingbird makes butinage from a religious denomination to another producing syncretism. A exacerbação da beligerância contra as religiões afro-brasileiras, seus adeptos e símbolos, é uma das faces do pentecostalismo que nas últimas duas décadas e meia tem ganho amplo destaque no debate público brasileiro. Blogueiros e jornalistas, militantes do movimento negro e de outros movimentos sociais, assim como delegados, advogados, juízes, sociólogos e antropólogos têm participado ativamente desse fenômeno que já possui agenda própria de investigação nas ciências sociais desde a década de 1990. Observar como os cientistas sociais abordaram este tema até o final da década de 2000 e analisar um estudo de caso, também ocorrido no final desta década, são os principais empreendimentos que esta investigação visa realizar. Para tanto, construo no corpo deste trabalho duas partes inter-relacionadas que analisam algumas faces deste tema de pesquisa que ficou conhecido como \"o conflito entre adeptos das religiões pentecostais e afro-brasileiras\" na esfera pública brasileira. Na primeira parte desta investigação, constituída na forma de um balanço teórico, procuro apresentar como os termos \"guerra santa\" e \"intolerância religiosa\" são centrais nos principais trabalhos que versaram sobre o tema ou o tangenciaram de tal forma que contribuíram para a constituição desse fenômeno com uma agenda própria. Na segunda parte desta investigação tomo como objeto privilegiado de pesquisa um estudo de caso exemplar do conflito entre pentecostais e religiões afro-brasileiras, ocorrido em junho de 2008 na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, quando quatro jovens \"invadem\" um centro espírita no bairro do Catete, suscitando amplo debate sobre o tema, que tem na prática discursiva dos mais diversos atores sociais a presença constante dos termos \"intolerância religiosa\", \"liberdade religiosa\" e \"liberdade de expressão religiosa\"The exacerbation of belligerence against afro-brazilian religions, their churchgoers and symbols, is one of the faces of pentecostalism in the past two and half decades has ample prominence in brazilian public debate. Bloggers and journalists, militant black movement and other social movements, as well as delegates, lawyers, judges, sociologists and anthropologists have actively participated in this phenomenon that already gets its own research agenda in the social sciences since the 1990s. Investigate how social scientists have addressed this phenomenon until the late 2000s and analyze a case study are the main projects that this research aims to accomplish. To do so, this work get two interdependent parties who seek to analyze some faces of this theme of research that became known as \"the conflict between adherents of pentecostal and afro-brazilian religions\" in the brazilian public sphere. In the first part of this investigation, constituted as a state-of-the-art, I try to make it clear that the terms \"guerra santa\" and \"religious intolerance\" are central to the principal investigations of around the theme, which contributed to the establishment of this phenomenon with its own research agenda in the social sciences . Ao nos referirmos à educação, é interessante sabermos que ela está relacionada a um conjunto de processos destinados a levar os indivíduos a desenvolverem a dimensão educacional em sua vida, tornando-os aptos a produzirem cultura, e, ao mesmo tempo, se apropriarem dos bens culturais já produzidos. A escola que sonhamos deve assegura a todos a formação cultural e cientifica para a vida pessoal, profissional e cidadã, possibilitando uma relação autônoma, crítica e construtiva com a cultura em suas manifestações, seja a cultura provida pela ciência, pela técnica, pela estética, pela ética e até pela cultura paralela (meios de comunicação de massa), seja pela cultura cotidiana. Já o Ensino Religioso (ER), este, por sua vez, tem como Objetivo geral trabalhar o Fenômeno Religioso de forma abrangente e interdisciplinar e tendo como referência os Eixos Curriculares do Ensino Religioso que nortearão sua obrigatoriedade e prática eficaz no Ensino Fundamental (LDB, 9.394/96). O Ensino Religioso é um componente curricular que discute a diversidade e a complexidade do ser humano como pessoa aberta às diversas perspectivas do Sagrado, presentes nos tempos e espaços culturais em relação a caminhada existencial humana. Daí, a nossa preocupação em questionar algumas posturas referentes às aulas de Ensino Religioso, procurando abordar a sua história desde os primórdios até os dias atuais, visando, com isso, compreender questões como: Improvisação do Ensino Religioso, Capacitação dos Profissionais em Ensino Religioso, Aulas de Ensino Religioso como Complementação de Carga Horária e, até o próprio desconhecimento, em geral, dos cinco Eixos Norteadores (conteúdos) dos Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais do Ensino Religioso pelos professores dessa disciplina. A metodologia constou de fichamentos bibliográficos e de uma pesquisa campo, através de um questionário aberto, aplicado a uma amostra de vinte professores das escolas selecionadas (Lagoa Encantada e Missionário São Bento), sobre as temáticas: Formação de valores, Reflexão crítica e uma sadia convivência humana cidadã.Com a aplicação do questionário,obtivemos uma gama de problemas: Dificuldades com a disciplina Ensino Religioso, Carência de formação adequada e Falta de habilidade para trabalhar a disciplina, havendo um hiato entre as propostas curriculares e a operacionalização, surgindo, muitas vezes, um Discurso improvisado.Reconhecendo suas limitações, quanto à sua formação e à condição de trabalho,os sujeitos da amostra manifestaram-se dispostos/as e abertos/as à implantação de Cursos de Formação pelos Órgãos competentes da Secretaria de Educação e de Formações para tirar as dúvidas, superar as necessidades e as dificuldades que entravam o ministrar da disciplina Ensino Religioso. The methodology consisted of a bibliographic record keeping and research field , through an open questionnaire applied to a sample of twenty teachers from the selected schools ( Enchanted Lagoon and Mission St. Benedict ) , on the themes : values formation , critical reflection and a healthy human coexistence cidadã.Com the questionnaire , we obtained a range of problems : Problems with discipline " Religious Education" Lack of adequate training and ability to work Lack of discipline , there is a gap between curriculum proposals and operational , emerging, often a Speech improvised. Recognizing its limitations as regards their training and working condition , the subjects of the sample expressed their willingness / and the open / to the implementation of training Courses by the competent bodies of the Department of Education and formations to dispel doubts , exceed the needs and difficulties impeding the minister of Religious Education course . We hope that the issues discussed in this dissertation contributes to the reflection of Religious Education as a whole!

This research addresses the relationship between sexual activity and religion. In particular, the analysis focuses on the impact of religious affiliation, religious public participation and subjective religiosity on the frequency of sexual activity. Religious categories are operationalized as conservative Protestants, moderate Protestants, liberal Protestants, black Protestants, Catholics, Jews, non-affiliates, no religious preference, and other Protestants. The results of the analysis indicate that conservative Protestants and black Protestants are more sexually active than other religious categories. Attendance at religious services has a negative effect on the frequency of sex activity. Subjective religiosity is not related to sexual frequency. Europe has in recent years recognized the need of the inclusion of religions in the dialogue on social cohesion and building of its future. Analysts of the interreligious dialogue suggest that understanding the process of it may be helpful to both the initiators of such conversations as well as all the participants. The idea of different religions working together raises some questions. One of the first questions asked is whether interreligious dialogue really works. How can diverse religions dialogue when there are disputes even within the same religions and within their branches? The understanding of the process offers a better chance of such dialogue being successful and useful for the building of the world we live in. This thesis explores interreligious dialogue by looking into the interreligious council of Stockholm, which currently includes eighteen different religions, representing some of the city’s diversity, its thoughts and culture. For the analysis, we will use Orton’s discussion and recommendations. In his “Interfaith dialogue: seven key questions for theory, policy and practice” (2016), Orton considers many of the nuances involved in such dialogue. Questioning and reflections allow for the observations and insight into the complexities of interreligious dialogue which provides for better understanding of the process included. Theories and angles consider social and psychological elements, as well as religious concerns. Using qualitative research, coming from the interpretive paradigm, this thesis analyses how interreligious dialogue works within a local interreligious council. Analysing the reflections and answers of the respondents, we find the answers to some of the questions given by Orton and reflect over the practical understanding of the theories we looked at.

This thesis asks how manifestation of religious belief by religious individuals can best be protected in English law. It is particularly concerned with the protection available to religious individuals in the public sphere. This thesis assesses the current state of protection under religious freedom and religious discrimination models, before considering the potential for increasing protection by reconceptualising the right to manifest religious belief as an aspect of freedom of expression. This thesis asks whether the practical and conceptual limitations of a religious freedom model, and Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) in particular, can be overcome by reliance on alternative modes of protection, namely religious discrimination protections in domestic, Convention, and EU law, or through litigating religious manifestation claims as freedom of expression cases under Article 10 of the ECHR. The difficulty of communicating the harm in being denied the ability to manifest religious beliefs publicly is a key limitation of both religious freedom and religious discrimination models. Similarly, this thesis highlights the difficulty in assessing what weight should be attributed to such religious harm within a proportionality exercise balancing the rights of religious individuals with the rights and interests of other parties. The analysis in this thesis draws primarily upon the sources of law which shape domestic English law in this area, namely the ECHR and European Union law. However, this thesis also considers foreign precedent and case law from the United States in particular. This thesis contends that no one model can address the range of cases where manifestation of religious beliefs arise, and that litigants should be able to draw from religious freedom, religious discrimination, and freedom of expression protections depending on the nature of their case.

What are we to make of the religious diversity present in our world? There are two main views in the face of such diversity. The religious exclusivist (RE) holds that the truth claims of only his or her tradition are the correct claims. Alternatively, the religious pluralist (RP) asserts that the truth claims of all traditions are correct in some sense. In this paper I explore several philosophical arguments in favor of each view including: Alvin Plantinga, William P. Alston, and John Hick. I argue that the distinction between the RE and the RP is actually based in different domains. The RE is posing a solution in the domain of the individual practitioner, while the religious pluralist is offering a solution in the global domain. These two views are distinguished by the distinct set of concerns defining each domain. The main concern defining the individual practitioner domain relates to the genuine belief of the practitioner, and the global domain defining concern is the problem of epistemic peers. Finally, I argue that it is possible to consistently be a RE in one domain and a RP in another, so long as the agent can successfully navigate the differences between domains.

This thesis is an assessment of interreligious dialogue in India developed as an approach to other religions in the context of exclusivist attitudes. While dialogue is important in such a context, nevertheless, in terms of its wider objectives of creating better relationships in society, it has some limitations which need to be addressed for it to be more effective in society. Studying the past 60 years of dialogue in India and undertaking field-research in south India, this thesis discusses three such limitations. Firstly, critiquing the notion of world-religion categories which is fundamental to dialogue, it argues that such categories are products of the western Enlightenment and colonialism leading to framing colonised people’s identities largely in terms of religion. Dialogue, emphasising the plurality of religions, has appropriated these notions although people live with multiple identities. Secondly the idea of religious conflicts serves as the basic context for dialogue in which dialogue should take necessary actions to contain them. While the concern to do away with conflicts through dialogue needs to be furthered, this thesis considers the multiple factors involved in such conflicts and works for solutions accordingly. Analysing through a case study a clash in 1982 in Kanyakumari district which continues to be termed as Hindu-Christian conflict, this thesis shows that there are multiple factors associated with each communal conflict, and dialogue needs to understand them if it is to work effectively. Thirdly it critiques the elite nature and methods in dialogue which ignore grass root realities and call for ‘taking dialogue to grassroots.’ The argument is that grassroot experiences of relating with each other in everyday living should be incorporated in dialogue for better results. What is proposed at the end is a necessity of re-visioning dialogue which can lead to fostering ‘inter-community relations based on multiple identities and everyday living experiences of ordinary people’ that invites one to enlarge the horizons to comprehend the plurality of relations and identities, not just plurality of religions, understand and address real-life conflicts and question naming conflicts as religious, and incorporate grassroot experiences of everyday living in continuing to work for a more peaceful society.

This thesis is a discourse analytic investigation of the "social practice" (Fairc!ough & Wodak, 1997, p. 258) of "talking identity" (Hadden & Lester, 1978) - in particular, religious identity. It uses interview and group discussion data generated in the rural Canadian town of Claresholm to examine (i) how rural Canadians present themselves in terms of religion in "talk-in-interaction" (Schegloff, 1987, p. 207), and (ii) how religious discourses intersect with other public sphere discourses in such talk. Drawing on both Membership Categorization Analysis (MCA) (Hester & Eglin, 1997c; Jayyusi, 1984; Lepper, 2000; Sacks, 1979, 1992, [1972] 1986; Scbegloff, 2007c) and stance analysis (Du Bois, 2007; Englebretson, 2007b; Jaffe, 2009; Kockelman, 2004), this case study shows that Claresholm residents produce a sense of their own religious identities both (i) directly, by categorizing themselves as "belonging to" and/or "separate from" specific religious groups, and (ii) indirectly, by projecting attitudinal stances on multiculturalism, as it relates to religion. This study also shows that attitudinal stance-taking on matters other than religion is one way in which interdiscursive links are forged between religious and other public sphere discourses, such as Canadian Multicultural Discourse (CMD). In doing so, this thesis posits that religious identity can fruitfully be conceptualized as a "transportable identity" (Zimmerman, 1998, pp. 90-91), accomplished (at least in part) in "talk-in-interaction" (Schegloff, 1987, p. 207) - and that close linguistic analysis is relevant to Religious Studies inquiries. It also argues that MCA and stance analysis are complementary analytical frameworks for investigating the discursive construal of religious identities. Finally, this thesis suggests that Claresholm residents' "quasi-private" and "semi-public" (Wodak, de Cillia, Reisigl, & Liebhart, 1999, p. 187) talk about religion is partially shaped by the wider discursive context within which it is produced - and, on this basis, it argues for the admission of religious discourses into Canada's "multicultural public realm" (Parekh, 2000, p. 203).

In this thesis it is argued that while the concept of freedom of religion or belief itself is opaque and difficult to define, the right to religious freedom must contain certain basic factors – most importantly the right to individual (religious) autonomy. The individual autonomy approach is seen here as providing the necessary rationale for the protection of freedom of religion or belief. This rationale is not cemented in stone in the practice of the Convention and this has caused the Court to lose its focus on individual freedom. It is a dangerous tendency. It allows the focus to be placed on the role of the State and leaves freedom of religion or belief to be heavily affected by politics and fluctuating social attitudes. In this regard, this thesis looks for the meaning and scope of individual and collective religious autonomy and how it is and ought to be represented in the practice of the European Court of Human Rights. It is the aim of the author to contribute to a clearer and more principled understanding of Article 9 of the ECHR. The right to individual autonomy is thought to be able to provide the necessary focus for the European Court of Human Rights in creating a more robust framework for the protection of freedom of religion or belief different from current Court practice which shows inconsistency in its reasoning and theoretical chaos. This lack of clarity has also contributed to freedom of religion or belief being a relatively weak right. It is explored here as to how the principle of autonomy (as developed in this thesis) relates to other principles provided by the Court, namely the principle of State neutrality, pluralism and the effective protection of rights, but also the margin of appreciation and the autonomy of religious communities. The individual autonomy centred theoretical framework in the first part of the thesis will be engaged to analyse the conflict in the triangle of state-individual-community explored in the second part.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the economic approach to religion and suggest a new frame for the religious market model. In religious studies, various approaches have been attempted, for example anthropology, sociology and psychology. Recently, some sociologists and economists have started to observe the marketization of religion and to explain religious phenomena or behaviours from an economic perspective. Based on this economic approach to religion, they have made it possible to explain not only marketization of religion but also religious revival in a secular and modern period. In spite of their great contributions to the formation of a new paradigm in religious studies, however, the economic approach to religion has been criticized for its reductionist methodology and basic assumptions. In addition, this approach has been questioned about its main theory, the religious market model. Some people assume that this model can be applied only to a free market situation in the modern period; others assume that it is applicable only to specially secularized regions, such as the U.S. or U.K. Nevertheless, the previous model has often shown some limitations because of the narrow understanding of the religious market. After all, these limitations have left economists of religion unable to explain more diverse religious contexts. Given these considerations, this thesis concludes that the existing religious market model needs to be more comprehensively updated. Therefore, in order to enhance the applicability of the economic approach to religion, I suggest new typologies of the religious economic system, religious market, and religious market structure. Then I examine how they can be applied in an actual religious marketplace through specific cases in South Korea.

maioria afrodescendente. Convivemos com uma gama de preconceitos e

educativa, transformando as aulas em espaço de construção de mais

We live with a series of prejudices and religious intolerance that can turn the classes of Religious Teaching not as respectful as they should be, as well as to harm the educational practice, turning classes in a construction site of more prejudices. For this reason, we look at the need of integration between education, religion and culture for the discernment between educator and student, understanding that each one has his/her own experiences and convictions of religious and cultural life, in which tolerance and ethics are basic principles.

Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum, The Satmar Rebbe, (1886-1978) was a well known Hassidic rabbinical leader of the 20th century. He was born into a rabbinical 'dynasty' and was ordained as a rabbi, Rosh Yeshiva and Rebbe in Hungary at a young age. It was in Hungary that his anti-Zionist views were developed. Notwithstanding the annihilation of Eastern European Jewry during the Holocaust, these views became more extreme with the passing years, and in some of his writings he explained the Shoa as a punishment from G-d for the "Zionist sin". The dissertation investigates the Rebbe's writings, which include: his biblical commentary, letters, speeches and sermons, hallachic responsa and philosophical contemplations; with special attention to his most famous book: "Vayoel Moshe".

Previous issue date: 2015-09-04The protection of religious freedom under the Brazilian legal system now requires a new look meet the demands arising in the exercise of faith and their acts of worship, namely, rest days, ornaments, places of worship etc. Taking as its starting point the historical construction of the right to religious freedom as guarantees of legitimizing instrument in the midst of a pluralistic and democratic society, raises the prospect of religious rest day protection as bias to be safeguarded as a means of demonstration respect for diversity and the exercise of religious tolerance. While the Legislature is omitted on the scope and protection of religious rest day, the Judiciary Power come constantly creating and abridging rights making up clearly see through the case study of this work, which courts have diametrically opposed decisions, which sometimes they relate to the literalness of the law disregarding the fact that a fair decision must be based on arguments of principle that will make the decisions seek equality and justice. The example of the United States and European Union reinforce the discussion, since there are accommodation mechanisms that comply well with the role of mediators in the search for safeguarding the full exercise of religious freedom in those countries. It is not a perspective that goes against the pillars of formation of the secular State. Before, it is on a quest to give effect to the right of a minority that is still little heard.
A proteção da liberdade religiosa no âmbito do ordenamento jurídico brasileiro passa a requerer um novo olhar frente às demandas que surgem em virtude do exercício da fé e dos seus atos de culto, quais sejam, dias de descanso, adornos, locais de culto etc. Tendo como ponto de partida a construção histórica do direito à liberdade religiosa enquanto instrumento de legitimação de garantias no bojo de uma sociedade pluralista e democrática, levanta-se a perspectiva da proteção do dia de descanso religioso como viés a ser resguardado como forma de demonstração de respeito às diversidades e exercício da tolerância religiosa. Enquanto o Poder Legislativo se omite quanto à abrangência e tutela do dia de descanso religioso, o Poder Judiciário vêm, constantemente, criando e cerceando direitos fazendo-se perceber claramente, através do estudo de caso do presente trabalho, que Tribunais possuem decisões diametralmente opostas, as quais, por vezes, prendem-se à literalidade da lei não atentando para o fato de que uma decisão justa deve pautar-se em argumentos de princípios que irão fazer com que as decisões busquem igualdade e justiça. O exemplo dos Estados Unidos e União Europeia reforçam a discussão, posto que, existem mecanismos de acomodação que cumprem bem com o papel de mediadores na busca por resguardar o pleno exercício da liberdade religiosa nesses países. Não se trata de uma perspectiva que vai contra os pilares de formação do Estado Laico. Antes, constitui-se em uma busca em dar efetividade ao direito de uma minoria que ainda pouco é ouvida.

Previous issue date: 2010-05-10This study has been to analyze the religious teaching and defending the role of the Science of Religions in the process. To this end, we carried out a literature search, analyzes integrative, systematic and quantitative and qualitative study of scientific publications produced between 1978 and 2009. The results showed 207 studies available, most of them on the website of the Permanent National Forum of Religious Teaching, intensified in the last ten years in the institutions of the Southeast and Southern Brazil. The analysis of publications identified three groups of studies that discuss religious education: a minority that disagrees with the religious education at school, a group that says satisfied with the current situation and a larger group advocate changes in legislation, training of teachers in curriculum and teaching of religious education. The study revealed a higher religious and inter-disciplinary, which is presented as a discipline that collaborates with other sciences, which justifies the need to understand the religious education through the constructs theoretical-philosophical/sociological religions. The authors agree that religious teaching is necessary and should include the differences among religions. Within this perspective, this study examined the role of the Science of Religions as an alternative to religious education, taking into account the principles of scientific, integrality, supraconfessional, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, subjectivity, contextuality, of falsification and flexibility. Faced with the current religious teaching, the Science of Religions can play a neutral and without comparing religions together. In conclusion, this study, that the last thirty years much has been published on religious education, however, there is a need for teacher education to the Brazilian religious education, taking into account all its complexity by means of Sciences of Religions.
Neste estudo tem-se por objetivos analisar o ensino religioso e defender o papel das Ciências das Religiões nesse processo. Para tanto, realizou-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica, com análises integrativa, sistematizada e quanti-qualitativa de publicações científicas elaboradas entre 1978 e 2009. Os resultados apontaram 207 pesquisas disponibilizadas, em sua maioria, no sítio do Fórum Nacional Permanente de Ensino Religioso, intensificadas nos últimos dez anos em instituições das regiões Sudeste e Sul do Brasil. A análise das publicações permitiu identificar três grupos de estudos que discutem o ensino religioso: uma minoria que discorda do ensino religioso na escola; um grupo que se diz satisfeito com a situação atual e um grupo maior defensor de mudanças na legislação, na formação dos professores, no currículo e na didática do ensino religioso. O estudo revelou um ensino religioso interdisciplinar e transdisciplinar, que se apresenta como uma disciplina que colabora com outras ciências, o que justifica a necessidade de compreender o ensino religioso por meio dos constructos teórico-filosóficos/sociológicos das religiões. Os autores concordam que o ensino religioso é necessário e que se deve incluir as diferenças entre as religiões. Dentro dessa perspectiva, o presente estudo analisou o papel das Ciências das Religiões como uma alternativa para o ensino religioso, levando-se em consideração os princípios da cientificidade, da integralidade, da supraconfessionalidade, da interdisciplinaridade, da transdisciplinaridade, da subjetividade, da contextualidade, da refutabilidade e da flexibilidade. Ante o ensino religioso atual, as Ciências das Religiões podem contribuir de forma neutra e sem comparar as religiões entre si. Conclui-se, com este estudo, que nos últimos trinta anos muito se publicou sobre ensino religioso, no entanto, existe a necessidade de uma formação docente voltada para o ensino religioso brasileiro, levando em consideração toda a sua complexidade por meio das Ciências das Religiões.

Religious disaffiliation among Millennials has increased significantly in the past decade alongside rapidly changing social relationships amplified by social media applications. In the United States, many Millennials claim no religious identity with many leaving their religion for a variety of reasons. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of religiously disaffiliated Millennials regarding their psychological health and well-being. Self-determination theory fulfilled the theoretical framework for examining the lived experiences of young adults regarding their well-being after religious disaffiliation. A purposive sample of 12 male and female religiously disaffiliated Millennials was recruited for semistructured interviews. Content analysis was used to code interviews, identify themes, and explore the lived experiences of disaffiliated young adults. Six themes emerged from the data analysis that included religious disaffiliates inherited their childhood religion; contradictory experiences highlighted a need to disaffiliate; after disaffiliation, individuals stopped attending the church with no other actions; after disaffiliation, participants appeared to be able to connect with their authentic self; participants had negative connotations of religion after disaffiliating; and families accepted disaffiliation after it occurred. The implications for social change include providing better understanding of the psychological health and well-being of Millennials who have disaffiliated, as well as demonstrating a need for future research that focuses on future generational cohorts and how religious organizations and churches are accounting for disaffiliation within their congregations.

The purpose of this essay is an attempt to create a “first basis” of reliability for religious content in computes games, and its value in academic studies. While not researching it in depth, this essay will also give a suggestion of computer games’ potential as a didactic medium. A quantitative comparative analysis has been performed, to present several common religious themes and their occurrence in the computer game respectively. While researching the game, an abundance of religious themes have been found, documented and presented. Through this, it is concluded that computer games not only have the capability of presenting religious themes; they are found to be capable mediums of presentation. The content itself is of high varsity and of great interest to any religious scholar.

This study of forty-nine Christian blogs explores how groups of bloggers in two case studies resist and/or perpetuate hegemonic gender ideologies online and where these bloggers draw authority from for these views. The findings reveal that bloggers are most likely to cite texts as sources of authority and are more likely to affirm authority (78.1%) than to challenge it (25.7%). The bloggers in my sample, who were majority male, use an array of strategies in their efforts to resist hegemonic gender norms. These included, but are not limited to, debating God’s gender, emphasizing women’s roles in the Bible, privileging equality in theological interpretations, redefining masculinity and employing satire and images to delegitimize hegemonic power.

This thesis argues that the Salman Rushdie controversy has a range of "entails" which focus and contribute to the need for a reconsideration of the complex constitutional nexus of religion, society and state currently embodied in the establishment of the Church of England. Chapter 1: The Introduction, acknowledges the academic and professional contexts that have informed the thesis. It clarifies the central research questions, defines the boundaries of the research and sets out the arguments in brief. Chapter 2: The Contours of the Controversy, charts the principal features of the controversy as it developed between 1988 and the end of 1995, primarily by highlighting the "critical incidents" during 1989. Chapter 3: The Controversy: Actions and Reactions outlines a range of positions taken up within the controversy and concludes by distilling five clusters of issues (social, religious, cultural, legal and political) which it is argued have "entails" for established religion in England. Chapter 4 on Established Religion, The Controversy and the Issues outlines the inheritance of established religion in England. It brings the identified clusters of issues into critical interaction with debates around this inheritance and the constitutional nexus which it represents for the contemporary relationships between religion(s), state and society in England. Finally, some alternative patterns for structuring these relationships are examined. Chapter 5 on Towards a New Socio-Religious Contract concludes the thesis by arguing that, in the context of the changed composition of English society and the public policies and community responses adopted in relation to these changes, the "entails" of the Rushdie controversy signal the arrival of a "kairos" for established religion and the need for negotiating a new "socio-religious contract. " Some alternative models are debated for symbolising, structuring and operationalising the relationships between religion(s), state and society in England within the UK, and a proposal is made for what is argued to be a more theoretically coherent and practically appropriate way forward than either the current form of established religion or the other identified possibilities.

In Myanmar "othering" has severe consequences for religious groups, including contributing to escalate and sustain violent conflicts. Religious doctrine is among several other factors that inform the views on the "religious other". This paper analyzes "theology of religions" and representation of the "religious other" in one religious group in Myanmar: The majority Christian denomination, the Baptists, with a scope related to Northern Myanmar, particularly Kachin State. The findings are that there is no uniform way in which Christian Baptists in Myanmar, and related to Kachin State, deal with the "religious other". The findings suggest, however, that related to their "theologies of religions" Christian minority voices are mainly concerned with the Buddhist majority. This in a way in which the "religious other" from other religious groups are not of great concern. Conflicts and conflictual relations in which also religious identities across religious groups are present served but more as an implicit backdrop. Instead, positive social representation and explicitly encouraging peace-seeking engagement and relationships with the "religious other" were highlighted by some. Calls for cooperation among Christian groups were also highlighted. In addition, however, an important finding in the analyzed material was that there to a great extent was a Christian inter-group positioning with “in-grouping” and “out-grouping” - including affirmation or rejection of the "theology of religions" - of other Christian sub-groups or individuals. As such, the negative "othering" by some Christians were interestingly not mainly concerned with the "religious other", but with the "denominational other".
