Abstract:
The number of conflicts with religious dimensions has been steadily increasing over the last few decades. Previous research has found that religious conflicts are less likely to end by mediation whilst little research has been done as to what makes them initiate mediation. Building upon Ripeness Theory, this paper argues that the religious component makes religious parties less sensitive towards mutually hurting stalemates, but not immune to them, due to their heterogenous nature. This proposition is analysed by examining the empirical pattern of mediation onset in conflicts over religious incompatibilities using a logistic regression analysis. The findings suggest that higher numbers of average battle-related deaths, together with the duration of conflict and presence of crude oil reserves, increase the likelihood of mediation onset, whilst differentiations in centrality of a religious goal or religious identity divides have no statistically significant effect.

Abstract:
It has been the desire of the ANC government ever since it came to power in 1994 to develop a unity of purpose and spirit that cherishes and celebrates the diverse nature of the South African population in terms of culture, language and religion and to transform existing inequalities that are deep-rooted in South African educational history and religion in particular. In order to satisfy this desire, a whole plethora of legislation and policies was developed. Amongst the developments entailed in these laws and policies were religious rights and freedoms guaranteed to all South Africans as well as the establishment of democratic structures vested with powers to govern schools while school principals manage them. In terms of education legislation, one of the functions of the governing body of a school is to develop and adopt a school policy on religion (as per the study) which is accordingly implemented by the school principal. It is in the policy implementation stage that the school principal is expected to play a mediating role and resolve possible conflicts erupting due to different religious interestThis study is based on the assumption that the management and leadership training they received and the position they hold as school managers and leaders, enabled participating school principals to mediate the implementation of new religion policies. The research question driving this study was “How do school principals deal with implementation of the National Policy on Religion and Education in schools?” Informed by this question the focus of the study was to explore “how principals describe and experience their mediating role in implementing the religion policy within an existing religious context in schools”. Following a qualitative research approach a phenomenological research design was employed in order to understand and describe the meaning of the lived, felt and narrated experiences of school principals. Data were collected by means of narrative interviews where twelve school principals pursuing postgraduate studies with the University of Pretoria and who have been in education for at least ten years, told their religion in education stories. These stories were subsequently transcribed, analysed and interpreted to determine the impact of principals’ past religious experiences and their management training on their implementation of religion policies at their schools. This study found that in dealing with the National Policy on Religion and Policy (2003) implementation in schools, participating principals ignore the policy in preference of maintaining the status quo. When faced with conflicts related to religious interests, they partially sub-contracted into the policy. They did not seem to consider transformative mediation as a possible leadership strategy for conflict resolution in the existing religious context of schools. The study also found that amongst these principals, there were those who displayed a confident attitude, values of openness, generosity and integrity and had used their past religious experiences to transform the quality of conflict interaction in schools. My recommendation in this regard would therefore be threefold. One, Higher Education Institutions should provide appropriate training by introducing suitable courses that will yield adequate knowledge, skills and opportunities for professional attitude, value attainment and determination for continuous learning and development to principals as key change agents. Two, there is a need for these organizations to re-evaluate and re-organise existing courses for better recognition of transformative mediation as a leadership strategy to conflict resolution in schools. The provincial departments of education need to provide appropriate training for prospective principals as part of professional development programmes to address the essential needs pertaining to policy implementation that could create conflict in schools. Training in mediation of conflict would therefore be essential.

Bodenbender, Stanislava. "The Role of Religious Leaders in Conflict Transformation." Master's thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2012. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-197398.

Abstract:
Religion has often been viewed as a source of conflict and violence in international relations. Yet history provides that religion has also been a source and inspiration for peace building and non-violent resistance. The role of religious leaders in conflict transformation has been treated as a marginal phenomenon. Appleby (2000) points out that identifying and documenting the roles of religious actors in resolving protracted conflicts remains an unfinished task. This thesis is an attempt to meet such challenge by focusing on religious leaders and their role in search of solutions in deeply rooted conflicts. Working from the premise that religious leaders can make a substantial contribution in conflict transformation, the overarching goal of this thesis is to examine what roles religious actors play and how equipped they are to serve their communities in their capacity as peacemakers.

Naidoo, Shershen. "Historic recovery, urban recovery - a cultural heritage and mediation centre at the Old Synagogue in Pretoria." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/28737.

Abstract:
2013 marked the fifty years anniversary of the Treason Trials at the Old Synagogue, in Pretoria, South Africa. The trial was a symbolic victory for the Liberation Movement in their fight against an oppressive apartheid regime. Today, with freedom a reality, Liberation Struggle Heritage Sites have surfaced throughout the country with the purpose of commemorating the multitude of events which occurred on the path to liberation. The purpose of this research is to generate a contextual response to the challenge of commemorating and rejuvenating the currently abandoned Old Synagogue. This study investigates the manner in which Liberation Struggle Heritage Sites are being commemorated. The results will assist heritage practitioners to ascertain whether the current trends in the application of heritage conservation and commemoration strategies make meaningful contributions towards local communities. An empirical research method of visiting Liberation Struggle Heritage Sites in Gauteng was conducted as a means of primary data collection. The findings indicate that these sites display weak accessibility traits, and do not engage with their surrounding context in manner which stimulates socio-economic and political growth. The design project aims to initiate programme as a means of commemorating and rejuvenating the Old Synagogue in a contextually appropriate manner. The prerequisites are that the programme should respect, liberate, and celebrate the history and heritage of the Old Synagogue together with the surrounding buildings of heritage value. The design proposal is a Heritage and Mediation Centre geared towards public utility as a place to gather, learn, and retreat within Pretoria’s historic inner city.

Pugh, Kelley. "Religious Attendance, Surrender to God, and Suicide Risk: Mediating Pathways of Feeling Forgiven by God and Psychopathology." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2019. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3535.

Full text
Abstract:
Suicide is a national public health concern, and college students may be at increased risk. Symptoms of psychopathology (i.e., stress, anxiety, and depression) may contribute to risk, whereas religiosity (i.e., religious attendance, surrendering to God, and feeling forgiven by God) may reduce risk. Students from a rural southeastern university (N=249) completed self-report measures. Serial mediation analyses indicate that attendance and surrender to God are inversely- predictive of suicide risk, both directly and through the indirect pathways of feeling forgiven by God (1st order mediator) and psychopathology (2nd order mediators). In all models, specific indirect effects occurred through feeling forgiven by God, suggesting the importance of relational aspects of religiosity. Our novel findings highlight mechanisms of action linking religiosity to suicide risk, and may provide direction for therapeutic intervention (e.g., psycho- education regarding religious involvement, fostering feelings of forgiveness) to reduce psychopathology and suicidality in the collegiate population.

Abstract:
An abundance of research has investigated well-being as it relates to religiosity and positive traits, with most research indicating that both relate to improvements in well-being. Moreover, several studies provide evidence for statistically significant relationships between religiosity and specific positive traits, including forgiveness and gratitude. However, few research studies have investigated how increases in positive traits might explain why religiosity enhances well-being. In addition, few studies within the religious and positive psychological literature have included adequate sampling from ethnic/racial minority populations residing in the U.S. As a result, investigations on how ethnic identity interacts with religious and positive psychological variables are virtually nonexistent. This study addressed these areas by investigating whether the positive traits of forgiveness and gratitude mediate the relationship between religious commitment and well-being among Polynesian Americans—a fast growing, yet understudied, American population. This study also investigated whether a Polynesian American’s ethnic identity moderates the relationship between religious commitment and the positive traits of forgiveness and gratitude. 627 Polynesian-identified individuals residing in the U.S. completed a 40-minute online survey that contained positive trait, ethnic identity, and well-being measures. Data analyses showed that forgiveness and gratitude traits mediated the statistical relationship between religious commitment and self-esteem. Gratitude was also shown to partially mediate the relationship between religious commitment and satisfaction with life. Moreover, data analyses did not support the hypothesis that ethnic identity would moderate the relationship between religious commitment, forgiveness, and gratitude. This study provides specific implications for clinical research among Polynesian Americans.

Full text
Abstract:
Religious coping and spiritual well-being were found to be culturally important resilience factors for African American women suffering from abuse and depressive symptoms. This investigation aimed to investigate whether: (1) spiritual well-being and its two components of existential and religious well-being mediate the Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)-Depressive Symptoms (DS) link; (2) positive and negative religious coping moderate the IPV-DS association; and (3) the mediating effect of spiritual well-being in the IPV-DS link is moderated by level of religious coping (i.e., moderated mediation). The study utilized data from 208 low income, suicidal and abused African American women, ages 18-55. Only the existential component of spiritual well-being was found to fully mediate the IPV-DS link. This indirect effect weakened at higher levels of negative religious coping. As predicted, higher levels of negative religious coping were associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms. Surprisingly, higher levels of negative religious coping were also associated with increases in existential well-being which, in turn, led to decrease in depressive symptoms. The findings underscore the importance of addressing existential well-being and religious coping in clinical interventions and in training for mental health professionals. Clinical and research implications of these findings are discussed and future directions recommended.

This thesis outlines a proposal from an explicitly religious standpoint of the key dimensions of peacebuilding, focusing particularly on mediation and facilitation as a primary task. What is the value of such a study? My initial responses in the paragraphs which follow are made at the broadest possible level: the desperate need for effective peacebuilders in a world torn by violence and the potential for religiously-based peacebuilders to fill that need. I then support this response by examining other reasons for the study: the current inadequacy of religious response to conflicts, the danger of manipulation of religious leadership by other actors, and potential for the insights of religiously-based actors to contribute to the over-all practice of peacebuilding and diplomacy. In addressing the latter question I outline my own understanding of the meaning of "religion", an understanding whose impact on the broad question of peacebuilding I explore throughout the chapters which follow.

Abstract:
The Lebanese political identities have often been linked to the existing religious identities. Lebanon has known in fact a number of civilizations and cultures, and has continuously been a place of political and religious tensions. From a methodological point of view, this thesis is based on readings and analysis of the press and the media, in addition to the literature of different artistic expressions. In the first section, the thesis focuses on the problematic. We present the multiple Lebanese political parties, their ideologies, their relationship with power and their history, especially after the Taef agreement (1989). We also study the political institutions and the political practices in Lebanon, as well as the multiple forms of political engagement. The thesis also tackles the important role of the traditional Lebanese families and the charisma of politicians. In the second section, we study the link between the political identities and the religious identities in the Lebanese public space. It focuses on the different kinds of relations that bound those two identities, in addition to the religious implications of wars. Also, this section analyses the geographical distribution of the political and religious identities in the country. In section number three, the thesis highlights the expressions of the political identities. It suggests an approach to the representation of these political identities in the media, in the fiction (literature, cinema, etc), in the songs and in fine arts. Finally, the last section focuses on the censorship, important concept in Lebanon, in the presence of a number of political and religious powers that influence the process of communication. We will define censorship, and focus on different kinds of censorship (political censorship, religious censorship, invisible censorship). We will also highlight the procedures and laws that lead to censorship, and the different ways followed by journalists and artists to face it

This thesis presents essentially the search to establish dialogue within the sociology of religion, between the modern and postmodern from the Kardecism studied in France and Brazil and neo-Pentecostalism, represented by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God. Thus we have as the first theme the relationship between society and religion, covering the classical authors of sociology and religious phenomena in the light of contemporary classics, aiming to demonstrate the relevance of these authors to understand the interdependent relationship between religion and society and the permanence of their contributions to the analysis of religion in contemporaneity. After, we have the approach of the relationship between religion and typical traits of modernity and post-modernity, seeking to clarify the question: can, we talk in modern and postmodern religion? It’s a question which is important as for as religious phenomena are not refractory to the spirits of the spirit of the season or time, for we work modernity and post-modernity as events that characterize our historicity. It is an analysis of Kardecism, first in France, demonstrating its historical influences that have formed as the driving force of development, success and decline in the context of French society. This is followed by analysis of Kardecism in the context of Brazilian society and the particular features in our reality, that differentiate it from its French headquarters, as Kardecism in Brazil assumes a traditional configuraction more assumptions rooted on of Catholicism. Finally, addresses the thematic Neo-Pentecostalism: between pre-modern, modern and postmodern? The aim is to relate the characteristic features typical of post-modernity and its determinants, represented by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, because this constitutes the contexts of the Brazilian religious field as a true watershed, the increasing number of its fans and also for its strong expansion in terms of territory, as well as through insertion which is related with the means of mass communication. It has elements which are distinguished from other constant expressions of religiosity in our society, because every feature has a way to profess the Christian faith. It inserts in the context of the market of material and symbolic, a characteristic that should be regarded as primal in terms of a postmodern approach in the context of the universe and religious-symbolic representations. This thesis constitutes an attempt to give a new focus on the relationship between traits typical of modernity and post-modernity, without being imprisoned by a single direction, but shows a different approach from the options present within the Sociology of Religions.

Abstract:
What does religion have to do with philosophy? More specifically, what does a long-abandoned 6th c. BC Greek mystery religion have to do with Plato, to whose intellectual contribution all the rest of western philosophy is sometimes said to be footnotes? I argue that the role played by mathematics in the philosophy of Plato is integrally influenced by Orphism. Plato transformed the distinctive Orphic anthropological, eschatological, and theogonic concepts into a philosophical system. His work largely secured the cultural conditions necessary for the very practice of philosophy. In Part One I delve into just how different culture was before Plato from what it must be like in order for there to be philosophy. I consider Orphism as a novel mythological form, synthesising Apollonian and Dionysian religious motifs. I examine some of its intellectual effects. In Part Two I consider what was to come from this under Plato's own masterful influence. In these ways I resuscitate a once traditional emphasis on Orphism in the understanding of Plato. But I bring a greater than usual attention to bear upon mathematics.

Abstract:
Independent since 1971, Qatar has been part of the micro-States. The country then experienced a form of a revolution with the accession to the power of Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani in June 1995. As a matter of fact, the new Emir undertook a determined policy, internationally recognized, ignoring Saudi Arabia’s role in the region. His diplomatic action was strengthened in a context in which the increase in the oil rent enabled the royal family to satisfy the social demands of the nationals. Like many states in the Muslim world, the Qatari regime had to acquire a legitimacy based on the religious foundation. A legitimacy that found its way into the relations forged with the Islamic scholar Yusuf al-Qaradhawi. Major figure in the contemporary Islamist scene, the ulema has carried out an intense activity of preaching by impelling strong faith-based media coverage with a political aim. His long presence in the emirate allowed him to weave a particular link with the dynasty in power. Suffering from a religious legitimacy deficit, this latter sought to use the charism of the ulema to serve a political purpose whose aim was to diminish the Saudi cultural impact while embodying a competing social model. What were the mechanisms of this original relationship between the two partners? By utilizing several concepts of political sociology such as field theory or collusive transactions, our thesis will explain how this interaction produced a complex mechanism where Qatar exploited Yusuf al-Qaradhawi’s legitimate religious authority figure by enabling him to mobilize, for the benefit of the emirate, what we have called « Islamic soft power for complementary »

Abstract:
Suicide is a significant public health concern and the second leading cause of death for college-age students in the United States. Although psychopathology (e.g., stress, anxiety, and depression) contributes to suicide risk, individual-level protective characteristics may be preventative. For instance, involvement in religious communities is inversely associated with suicide risk. Other factors, like surrendering to God or a deity (i.e., relinquishing control to God, entrusting one’s life to God’s purposes), are not well understood, but may also be beneficial. Further, psycho-spiritual processes, such as forgiveness, may help to explain the linkage between religious attendance/surrender and suicide. At the bivariate level, we hypothesized that religious attendance (RA), surrender to God (STG), and feeling forgiven by God (FFG) would be positively related; that depression, anxiety, stress, and suicide risk (SR) would be positively related; and that religious and psychopathological variables would be inversely related. In multivariate analyses, we hypothesized RA and STG would be negatively associated with suicide risk, and that FFG (1storder mediator) and psychopathology (i.e., stress, depression, and anxiety; 2ndorder mediators) would mediate this linkage, such that greater religious attendance/surrender would be related to increased FFG and, in turn, to less psychopathology and suicidality. Students from a rural southeastern university (N=249) completed self-report measures, including: a single-item measure of RA; the Surrender to God Scale; Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiousness/Spirituality – forgiveness items; Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales; and, Suicide Behaviors Questionnaire – Revised. Pearson-product moment bivariate correlations were utilized to assess for associations between, and independence of, study variables. Multivariate mediation analyses were conducted using Hayes’ PROCESS macro in SPSS, utilizing a 10,000 bootstrapping sample and covarying age, race, and sex. All bivariate hypotheses were supported, in expected directions (p<.001). All multivariate hypotheses in the RA models were supported, such that a total effect, but not an indirect effect was observed for depression (β=-.036, SE=.009,t=-4.104, p<.001), anxiety (β=-.036, SE=.009,t=-4.104, p<.001), and stress (β=-.036, SE=.009,t=-4.104, p<.001), indicating mediation. All hypotheses in STG models were supported, such that a total effect, but not an indirect effect was observed for depression (β=-.092, SE=.016,t=-5.700, p<.001), anxiety (β=-.092, SE=.016,t=-5.700, p<.001), and stress (β=-.092, SE=.016,t=-5.700, p<.001), indicating mediation. In all models, specific indirect effects occurred through the FFG pathway, suggesting the importance of intrinsic, relational aspects of religiosity for the reduction of suicide risk. A specific indirect effect between STG and SR through stress was observed, suggesting that relinquishing control to a “higher power” may be beneficial for stress reduction. Our novel findings highlight several potential mechanisms of action linking religious factors and SR, and may have clinical implications. Therapeutic promotion of religious involvement, when appropriate, and fostering a sense of forgiveness (e.g., via cognitive behavioral therapy, REACH model of forgiveness) may aid in the reduction of psychopathology and suicide risk in the collegiate population.

Abstract:
This thesis uses a philosophical discussion to explore the tensions that result in the meeting between universal claims and particular contexts regarding human rights and how these tensions can be mediated by exploring the right to religious freedom. In order to do this, two approaches will be studied, one liberal and one postcolonial, represented by Martha Nussbaum and Saba Mahmood respectively. In comparing the approaches of Nussbaum and Mahmood, their arguments and positions become clearer, but also the nuances of the debate between universalism and contextualism. The right to religious freedom, with its many tensions between theory and practice, has been useful in exploring what values are at stake when we talk about human rights in general and how we can think about the apparent tension between universalism and contextual sensitivity. The thesis thus shows that there are more similarities between these two approaches than it may first seem and that they are not incompatible. This is argued to provide insight into possible ways of mediating human rights between theory and practice.

Abstract:
Spiritual well-being is a well-established predictor of mental health, yet the potential mechanisms of this association are relatively unexplored. We examined the influence of spirituality, including religious and existential well-being, on depressive symptoms, and the potential mediating effect of optimism and pessimism, in a sample of 66 African American female suicide attempters. Participants were recruited from a large, urban hospital and completed the Spiritual Well-Being Scale, Life Orientation Test-Revised, and the Beck Depression Inventory-II. The association between spiritual well-being and depressive symptoms was mediated indirectly through both optimism and pessimism; greater religious and existential well-being was related to more optimism, and less pessimism and, in turn, to fewer depressive symptoms. Historically, spiritual well-being has been important to the African American community, and its beneficial effects on mental health might be explained, in part, by their effect on cognitive-emotional functioning.

Abstract:
Christianity consists in a significant practice of symbolic transmission notably with the role played by its cultural imprint throughout the world. A religion emphatically based on missionary work and on the propagation of the faith, its message has migrated across centuries, over different mediaspheres, to reach a connected audience today. This thesis deals with the study of the values of the politico-religious digital practices of the Catholic Church and particularly with the part that the Web 2.0 can play in the conversion of knowledge and beliefs of the public, through its influence on institutional rhetoric, practices and strategies. The objective is to analyse how, from mediations to remediations, by gradually integrating a transmedia strategy, the institutional content transits and becomes transformed through various technological can- dos during the message circulation: from the church authority to the lay sphere. The project is to study the mutations taking place in the technological mediations, by considering the whole of the Vatican’s contemporary cyber-campaign (papal documents, news broadcast by the Vatican’s media, discursive ethos, declaratory parameters, etc...), as this campaign has been marked by the Reform of the Vatican’s media since 2015.This work aims at applying semiotic epistemology to an info-communication problem in order to achieve a semio-communication theorization of the circulation of politico-religious discourses at the time of the hypersphere

Abstract:
This dissertation looked for to study the charisma of the religious mediator us " Movements of Christianity of Liberation " in the Diocese Sergipana of Propriá, during the decade from sixty to eighty. Centering our debate in the understanding of the social action, we have as main subject to understand the " poor " influence in the adoption of actions on the part of the mediators, in that public's favor, mainly in Fazenda Betume conflicts (1974) and of Santana dos Frades (1979). The hypotheses, we became pregnant that the mediators as D. José Brandão de Castro and the nun Maria Joana Hermínia exercised an important influence in the construction of the identity of the movements as CEBs, MEB and CPT in the area. Such influence was motivated by a conversion of the mediator D. Brandão, constituted starting from a relationship maintained between him and the members of the movements and proportionate for the critics and demands done by the popular ones. They resulted in actions in favor of the rural ones, what characterized the Church of Propriá as allied of the involved in the conflicts and no mere middleman. Before the collected material, we made use of the Analysis of Content using the poor " term " as analysis category, complemented by interviews done to members of the mentioned movements.

Abstract:
Juan Rulfo and João Guimarães Rosa stand at a literary crossroads, the intersection where traditional regionalists and celebrated Boom-era novelists meet. Although Rulfo and Guimarães Rosa chose the Mexican Llano Grande and the Brazilian sertão of Minas Gerais as the settings of their most celebrated novels, they go far beyond the techniques of traditional regionalism by distancing themselves from their national literatures. They universalize their narratives by incorporating universal religious themes, including the symbol of the cross. The symbol of the cross/crossroad has been analyzed and alluded to in a handful of essays on Pedro Páramo and Grande sertão: Veredas but has never been applied comparatively or in depth, beyond a connection to Hermes, Greek god of the crossroads. Rulfo and Guimarães Rosa use the spatial organizing power of the cross-and by extension, the crossroad-to highlight the importance of racial and religious mixing to Mexican and Brazilian identity, determine narrative structure, and strengthen mythic, religious, and epic themes. The motif allows the reader to transcend (although not eradicate) a geographical conception of setting. Instead, the reader recognizes the construction of a mythic space that intertwines national history with primordial creation stories, modern heroes, and ancient religious symbols.

Abstract:
The present research tries to understand the Bible text as a religious-political project in three different historical contexts where the biblical text was used as an instrument of social and ideological intervention. The first context studied is the period of king Josiah, who used the Deuteronomic Law as a unifying political factor. Then, the literary production of the exilic period is analysed, specially the Priest Code and the Deuteronomistic History, as well as the groups behind these texts. These documents with their dreams and proposals were of great influence in the whole Persian period. Thirdly, the Chronistic History is presented as a religious-political system of the Second Temple. At last, the research focuses on the final composition of the Pentateuch as the Law of the post-exilic Jewish community. The research tries, thus, to identify the whole range of political and ideological aspects woven in the relevant biblical texts of each period.

Abstract:
This research examines faith-based mediators and their usage of mediation strategies, in relation to durability of peace agreements and it is guided by the following research question; Why do some faith-based mediators succeed to aid the creation of durable peace, while others do not? In order to find an answer to this question a hypothesis, suggesting that faith-based mediators applying the fostering, rather than the forcing, strategy will be more successful, is tested. This hypothesis mirrors the causal logic, suggesting that faith-based mediators have the potential to contribute to the creation of durable peace agreements, through the usage of facilitative and formulative techniques. The methodological design makes use of tools provided by Mills Method of Difference and Structured Focused Comparison. These tools aid the analysis of faith-based mediation in Uganda and Sierra Leone. The findings indicate that the application of the fostering strategy has a positive effect in relation to the process of creating durable peace agreements. However, this positive effect comes with one condition, the faith-based mediators have to be influential in relation to the peace process.

Johnson, Trig. "John Baillie's epistemology of mediated immediacy : its logic, importance for Baillie's mediating theology, and promise as a model of revelatory religious experience." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2015. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/2448/.

Full text
Abstract:
The field of academic theology is presently maintaining the following about the critical thought of the Scottish thinker John Baillie (1886-1960): (1) Baillie’s so-called "mediating theology" does not have a concept to contribute to contemporary Christian thought; (2) Baillie's concept of "mediated immediacy" is important primarily for Baillie's thought in his Our Knowledge of God (1939); (3) mediated immediacy’s logic about knowledge of God is severely convoluted. Received positions which support the field's marginalization of mediated immediacy's contemporary relevance in particular, they come with a concession: (4) the field's confusion about mediated immediacy's meaning—this, as evidenced in over 75 years' worth of competing interpretations about mediated immediacy’s logic, in particular. This thesis centers primarily on Baillie's concept of mediated immediacy, taking as its primary aim the resolution of research issues (1-4). In doing so, it demonstrates that previous research has underestimated: the staying power of Baillie's mediating theology in general, mediated immediacy’s importance for Baillie’s mediating theology in particular, and mediated immediacy’s potential as a contribution to contemporary Christian thought. Along the way, it resolves several research issues which have been occasioned by perennial confusion about the logic of mediated immediacy's normative epistemology and descriptive epistemology in particular. Research contributions about the logic of mediated immediacy's epistemology per se, these derive from three additional research contributions: a diachronic trace of the development of Baillie's mediating theology (Baillie research has sought a comprehensive and cogent ordering of Baillie's non-systematically articulated critical thought; this thesis provides it, by identifying Baillie's espistemic and apologetic preoccupations across his critical thought's roughly 35-year development); a modeling of mediated immediacy's logic (previously absent in a research corpus whose literature ahs been replete with confusion), that logic's expression in what is found to be, contrary to the thrust of previous research, a concept of mediated immediacy that serves at least four functions for Baillie's mediating theology; and, a comprehensive and rigorous critical evaluation of mediated immediacy’s epistemology (also previously absent in Baillie research literature), a multi-disciplinary evaluation of it's logic (from contemporary philosophical-epistemological, empiricalpsychological and theological-epistemological perspectives), included. An evaluation warranted by the multi-disciplinary scope of Baillie's mediating theology, as well as by Baillie's employment of his rather versatile concept of mediated immediacy, this evaluation considers mediated immediacy's now robustly evaluated logic's consequences for core aspects of Baillie's mediating theology, including Baillie’s ideas of knowledge of God, divine action, divine revelation and religious experience. The definitive work on John Baillie's concept of mediated immediacy, this thesis is essential for those with an interest in John Baillie's critical thought. Amongst other things, the thesis challenges positions widely held by John Baillie research. For example, it demonstrates that a nascent form of mediated immediacy existed in Baillie's thought before the concept's first explicit mention in the mediating theologian's 1939 publication Our Knowledge of God. Here is a novel interpretation in the research. Furthermore, whereas previous research has rightly observed that Baillie’s critical thought gravitates toward the problems of revelation and knowledge of God in general, this thesis demonstrates that Baillie’s mediating theology focuses on one problem in particular— across the roughly 35-year span of its development: the problem of the epistemological relationship between direct knowledge and indirect knowledge for knowledge of God. In addition, this thesis demonstrates that Baillie’s latter mediating theology (post-1939) provides a stronger doctrine of the Holy Spirit than that found in Baillie's earlier critical thought. This thesis may also be of value to persons with broader interests, including the epistemic interplay between aspects of philosophy of religion, philosophical theology, and empirically-based interpretations of the phenomena of religious experience.

Bedair, Dina. "An investigation into whether experiential avoidance acts as a mediator in the relationship between religious coping and depression in an adult Muslim population." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2015. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/56888/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Depression presents differently in Muslims (Sami & El-Gawad, 1995). Religious coping and experiential avoidance (EA) are ways of coping with depression in many populations and religions but how these manifest or interact in Muslims is unknown. The way individuals cope with stressors may lead to the development of depression (Beck, 1987b). Positive religious coping (PRC) and acceptance are adaptive forms of coping and correlate with better quality of life (Gardner, Krägeloh and Henning, 2014). Negative religious coping (NRC) and EA are maladaptive forms of coping correlating with depression (Hayes et al., 2004; Pargament Feuille & Burdzy, 2011). Islam fosters acceptance and positive action. An a priori prediction is that well-adjusted, practicing Muslims will engage in PRC and acceptance, whilst those engaging in NRC and EA will display more depressive symptoms. Aims: To investigate whether religious coping and EA are implicated in the development of depression in Muslims. To date no study has addressed both constructs together in a Muslim sample. The study aimed to fill this gap and further the understanding of depression in Muslims. Method: Participants were recruited from a community sample of Arabic-speaking Muslims in the United Kingdom. Data were collected with an Arabic questionnaire pack including EA, religious coping and depression measures. Analysis: A cross-sectional, correlation and mediation design was adopted to test the hypotheses. Results: NRC moderately, positively correlated with depression. EA strongly positively correlated with depression. PRC was not related to depression. EA mediated the relationship between NRC and depression. Conclusion: EA could be a clinical target for depressed Muslims, e.g. using existing therapies like acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT; Hayes & Wilson 1994) or by incorporating Islamic concepts into other therapies like CBT to reduce NRC and increase acceptance. There is a need to develop standardised Arabic measures for use with this population.

Abstract:
Growing evidence for protective factors of spirituality against physical and mental health related outcomes has led to the consideration of spirituality as a protective factor for suicidal behaviors. Although initial support for this association is promising, spirituality has yet to be explored as it relates to psychache. Additionally, self-forgiveness has emerged as an important protective factor of suicidal behavior, but has not been explored in the context of psychache. Following a model developed by Webb, Hirsch, and Toussaint (2015), the current project explores the protective role of spirituality on suicidal behavior based on three dimensions of spirituality: ritualistic, theistic, and existential. A total of 262 individuals completed a self-report survey online through Amazon Mechanical Turk. Results indicate that only Existential Spirituality is related to suicidal behaviors. Further, self-forgiveness and psychache were found to be serial mediators of this relationship. Implications for clinical interventions and directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
This study determines the religious differences associated with the perceptions, intentions, and usage of online dating amongst emerging adults. Symbolic interaction theory informs how the symbols associated with online dating impact perceptions, intentions, and usage among a sample of 447 emerging adults, between 18-30 years of age. More religious individuals were found to typically use online dating less, have more negative perceptions, and hold more concerns about online dating, showing that religious beliefs and norms may still associate online dating as a sexual culture rather than a method for finding dating or long-term partners. The association of religiosity and resultant relationships was found to be mediated by frequency and concerns about online dating, but not perceptions. As technology continues to grow and online dating expands to become more acceptable, more online dating sites related to specific intentions will likely arise. Implications for practitioners and future research are provided.

This is a study about mediation and reception of media from Televison Canção Nova, a television channel linked to Catholic Charismatic Renewal. It had as one of its main goal to analyze the reasons which some people often watch this TV channel; it also aims to evaluate how the viewers absorb the ideology, messages, themes, and other subjects they watch and look into it from the receivers point of view, how the religious media experience happens in the individual. The mediation methodology allows answering about the television reception in building religious experiences. This work has been organized around the following steps: tracking the historical events that made possible the Pentecostal movements arise into Catholic Church; the connection between catholic movements and media, in special the television; and the understanding that, among several ways of experiencing religion, one of them might happen through television mediation. The research has based on media studies of reception, focusing on the methodology developed by Lopes, Borelli and Resende (2002) and the Martin-Barbero s theory of mediation. Having interviews as data of collection instruments and also, taking into account conceptually and theoretical the authors like Lipovetsky and Bauman, among others. The results suggest that the relationship between religious media and the receivers, currently, comes to be a tool to promote an individual religious experience with a great emotional appeal towards them
Abstract:
The primary focus of this study is to explore the relationship between structural factors of a specific society and occurrence of terror related crimes. Accordingly, the objective of this study is to examine how or to what extent social disorganization theory, which is the basic theoretical foundation of this study, can explain terrorism related crimes in Turkey. Although several previous studies investigated the social and structural dimensions of terrorism in a country, many of those studies did not go beyond investigating the impacts of traditional structural factors such as poverty, inequality, and education on terrorism. This study goes a step further by adding the mediating factors between those primary social disorganization variables and terror related crimes. Direct, indirect and, total effects of structural variables on terrorism through the mediating variables, that is prevalence of voluntary associations and religious institutions, are examined. Findings obtained from multivariate and mediation analyses show that while some structural variables such as education and poverty are directly related to distribution of terror related crimes, this relationship became indirect through the mediating variables for other structural variables such as residential mobility and unemployment. Results suggest that rather than overreliance on traditional antiterrorism strategies which are mostly depending on the public level control such as law enforcement process, programs supported by other levels of social control, that is, parochial and private levels must be encouraged.

Abstract:
This thesis for the first time critically and comparatively examines contemporary Christian and philosophical ethics of war. Thus it contributes to an investigation of current possibilities of moral-political action. Exploring various combinations of political ethics and the tenets of faith, it compares three Christian with two secular thinkers. Each chapter first shows how Just War ethics are constructed between ‘realism’ and ‘idealism’. The former prioritizes individual or national self-defence and power; the latter the universal value of each individual. Each analytical section reconstructs the author’s moral understanding of political authority, violent force and political reality. These foci are investigated in terms of how they understand, envision or reject the mediation between politics and Christian morality. As the inner logic of each Just War proposal is thus brought out, continuities and differences between authors can be explained. Part I looks at Christian authors. Jean Bethke Elshtain’s realistic, ‘naturalistic’ Just War ethic of the sovereign state rejects humanist idealism. For Paul Ramsey Christian agape provides a transformative ethic between idealism and realism. Developing this, Oliver O’Donovan’s evangelical approach practically fuses idealism and realism. Dogmatically, this is conditioned by moving from Elshtain’s modern theological dualism to Ramsey’s Christ-transforming the world, though still indebted to philosophical idealism. O’Donovan, however, suggests that after the singular mediation of the Christ event, moral-political categories disclose the divine order. Part II investigates the idealism-realism divide amongst philosophers. Both David Rodin’s idealist demand for a global state and Uwe Steinhoff’s individualist Machiavellianism seek to protect human rights. After Kant, they presuppose an unbridgeable division between politics and ‘religious’ morality. Theology, having become anthropology, replaces the mediation of Christ with immanent mediators: legal, statist or individualist moral agents. But this echoes and intensifies the Christian tradition. Whereas Rodin introduces a renewed, violent papacy, Steinhoff seeks to renew the liberal-democratic status quo through a secular ‘radical reformation’. It is concluded that both modern Christian and philosophical ethics of war can oscillate between impractical triumphant justice and the failure of tragic antagonism. If the singular mediation between Is and Ought in Christ is recognized as a universal paradox, doing justice effectively becomes possible.

This investigation tries to analyze how the religious practices (particularly Masses and Novenas) held in the Basilica Sanctuary of the Divine Eternal Father of the municipality of Trindade in the State of Goiás are put under a process of reconfiguration by being televised. In broadcasting these religious practices, the media employed its own rules and methods (or grammars), resulting in a new form of religious practice, which might be called “mediatic”. By analyzing the media practices of the Basilica Sanctuary of Trindade, we have identified two particularities: the use of simulation and the show as an outcome. These particularities have been originated from the process of media development on religious practices, mostly through the employment of techno- symbolic devices, orchestrated by the “mediatic” ceremony, developing from in- person religious practices. During this process of development, some modifications have also taken place in the Basilica Sanctuary of the Divine Eternal Father, as well as with the religious practices held within this church, due to their transmission by television. Grouped in two orders: temporality and spatiality, these modifications go beyond the religious field and can in fact be classified as concessions to another field, since they migrate into a television media classification. The research also shows that the televised religious practices of the Basilica Shrine of the Divine Eternal Father do not take place for the faithful present but for the “tele-faithful,” that is, the consumers of these mediatic-religious practices. The faithful, as well as the entire liturgical body of these religious practices, thus become the assistants of this media construction. To accomplish this investigation, a set of theoretical, methodological and technical procedures has been used, including bibliographical and documentary research, observation, interviews and analysis of media documents. The dissertation is develped in two parts. In the first, it addresses the emergence and development of devotion to the Divine Eternal Father under three distinct different aspects: the first during the colonial period until the proclamation of the Brazilian Republic. The second examines the devotion under ecclesiastical administration – in what we have called “Romanization.” The third deals with the mediatization of this devotion, that is, the use of the media in a first moment in order to “Christianize” it and then to spread it throughout Brazil. In the second part of the dissertation, the main concepts, such as secularization, the role of media, mediatization and the mediatization of religion (with a particular focus on media‟s interaction with Catholicism) are discussed as its hard core, as well as how the religious practices of the Basilica Sanctuary of the Divine Eternal Father are modified by being televised. It has come to a conclusion that religious devotion makes concessions to the media field in the transmissions of its practices and that these concessions not only alter the liturgical formats of its practices, but indeed affect the temple itself.

Abstract:
This work takes up the whole weilian thought, both from a chronological and thematic angle, taking the question of the being and the giving as a looding thread. Part me, "the being and the spirit" (1925-34), analyses the way this thought, inspired by reflective tradition sees the primal truths in the gift of the world, teh gift from self to self and the distance to the good. Part two, "the being and grace" (1934-41), starting from the passage of alain's humanism to the experience of supernatural grace, studies the metaphysics of revelation and creation that derive from it, connecting an ontology of mediation to a trinitarian theology. Finally, part three, "the being and the giving" (1941-43), takes into consideration the philosophy of religion, the political philosophy and mystic ethics of "decreation" that tend to define the modalities of incarnating grace in the world. The conclusion insists on the originality and requirments of universality of a thought that wants to combine greece and india, the principle of rationality and liberty of modernity and christianity, a philosophy of action and the most radical mystics, thus defining in a new way the relationship between reason and supernaturel, being and giving

Abstract:

The present study has a twofold purpose: Firstly, it is an analysis of the Karbalā´ Drama—i.e. the death of Ḥusayn b. `Alī in the hands of an army which had been sent out by the Umayyad authorities, at Karbalā´ in 60/680—as it is retold by the Muslim jurist and historiographer Abū Ja`far Muḥammad b. Jarīr al-Ṭabarī (d. 310/923). Despite its importance, especially to Shī`ite Islam, this text as such has received relatively little attention among scholars of Islam. In this study, the Karbalā´ Drama is regarded as a myth and the method used to analyze it is inspired by the structuralism of Claude Lévi-Strauss. Lévi-Straussian structuralism has probably never before been applied to early Arabic material to the extent that it is used here. The second purpose of the study, then, is to investigate to what extent and in what mode such a method is applicable to this material.

A portion of the text, called the “Text of Reference,” has been selected and thoroughly analyzed. In that analysis, a number of structural features such as codes, oppositions, mediations, and transformations have been identified and made the basis for a more cursory study of the rest of the story. An important structural feature that is detected in this way is the way the argument of the story is forwarded. By the transformation of metaphors into metonyms, the story attempts to make arbitrary relationships look natural and intrinsic. Such a relationship is that between water and blood—two liquids which are at times shed, at times withheld in the story. Husayn takes a mediating position in that he gives his water and his blood. He acts as mediator both in a negative sense (he establishes the basic Islamic opposition of good and evil), and in a positive sense (as religious guide he acts as a bridge between them).

Abstract:
An exercise in applied Christian ecotheology, this thesis focuses on a community of Lutheran church bodies (ELCA) in North Central Pennsylvania as they grappled with natural gas hydraulic fracturing in the summer of 2012. In the paper, I employ a combination of theological, environmental, historical, and ethnographic research methodologies to ground my analysis of how this synod of Lutherans to date has approached the fracking boom. My primary research question is: How might the Upper Susquehanna Synod of the ELCA--as a representative body of 131 Lutheran churches that are steeped in tradition--use its history, community involvement, theology, and church structure to address an ecological quandary like fracking? I answer this question in four sections, with each chapter focusing on a different thematic sub-question. Though I borrow techniques from the social sciences, I have written this thesis as a narrative, in order to draw the reader into this fascinating community. Instead of separating my literature review from my ethnographic data, I blend the two together in each chapter, weaving together quotes from synod members with secondary source material. Embedded throughout the report are also maps that I have produced using a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technique to give the story a spatial dimension. Additionally, I use photographs of the synod counties to enhance the reader’s understanding of the region’s ecological and cultural landscapes.

Abstract:
This study examines the rise, development, and crisis of theological encyclopaedia in nineteenth-century Germany. As introductory textbooks for theological study in the university, works of theological encyclopaedia addressed the pressing questions facing theology as a ‘science’ (Wissenschaft), a rigorous, critical discipline deserving of a seat in the modern university. The project of theological encyclopaedia, I argue, functioned as the place where theological reflection and the requirements of the institutional setting in which that reflection occurred—here the German university—converged. I explore its roots as a pioneering idealist model for organizing knowledge in the German university system in the late eighteenth century. I focus especially on Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768–1834), the father of modern Protestantism and principal intellectual architect of the University of Berlin (1810). Schleiermacher’s programme transformed the scholarly theological enterprise into one defined in terms of science. That transformation laid the groundwork for the later historicization of theology, which I investigate in the two predominant ‘schools’ of German university theology in the middle of the nineteenth century, the Hegelian ‘speculative’ school and ‘mediating theology’ (Vermittlungstheologie). Among the latter, I emphasize the remarkable international influence of the Swiss-German Karl Hagenbach (1801–74), whose theological encyclopaedia was among the most widely read theological books in German-speaking Europe from the 1830s through World War I. Finally, I analyze the project’s downfall in the context of Wilhelmine Germany and the Weimar Republic, beset by radical disciplinary specialization, a crisis of historicism, and the attacks of dialectical theology. Throughout, I contend that theological encyclopaedia represented the institutionalization of the idea of theology as science, which furnishes an explanatory grid for understanding the relationship between theology and the university. The project resulted in a powerful synthesis that fundamentally shaped the reigning theological paradigms in nineteenth-century Germany and beyond.
