Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the history of crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs), where antiabortion activists encourage women not to have abortions. CPCs, which emerged in the late 1960s, offered prolife women opportunities to engage in professional tasks, to socialize, and to work directly with women with unwanted pregnancies. By the 1970s, CPC work had become the most commonplace way that women participated in the prolife movement. This chapter documents how federal and state money have subsidized this religious work, in which employees and volunteers distribute medically inaccurate information in order to persuade women not to have abortions.

Ulrichsen, Kristian Coates. Centers of Power in the Arab Gulf States. Oxford University Press, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197776452.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract How are authority and influence accumulated and wielded across the six Gulf states? Mixing theoretical and empirical insights, and utilising both historical and contemporary examples, this book offers a comparative analysis of military, political, economic and religious power in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as well as of the power of narrative. While many volumes examine each of these states individually, Centers of Power in the Arab Gulf States assesses the Arabian Peninsula as a whole, filling a significant gap in the literature. It surveys the myriad factors which have influenced the emergence of these states, societies and political economies, which have become increasingly assertive actors in today’s global order. Exploring domestic, regional and transnational pressures, Kristian Coates Ulrichsen sheds light on the varying concepts of power and authority, the different forms they take, the ways they are projected, and the practical constraints on their exercise. From whom does power derive? Is it something different from influence and ambition? Is decision-making top-down or bottom-up, or a mixture of both? From bureaucrats to scholars, and from royals to opposition figures, Coates Ulrichsen uncovers the power relations shaping the Gulf today.

Bogdan, Henrik. Western Esotericism and New Religious Movements. Edited by James R. Lewis and Inga Tøllefsen. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190466176.013.34.

Full text
Abstract:
The study of Western esotericism is a comparatively new field of research that covers a wide range of currents, notions and practices from late antiquity to the present. Esotericism is often understood as the “rejected knowledge” of Western culture, which often centers on claims of absolute knowledge or gnosis. This chapter discusses four discourses that can be found in many esoteric NRMs, namely “secrecy and unveiling”, “initiation and progress”, “the higher self”, and “Secret Masters”. In the second part of the chapter four examples of esoteric NRMs are briefly discussed, Spiritualism, Theosophy, Thelema, and Wicca.

Arbabzadah, Nushin. Women and Religious Patronage in the Timurid Empire. University of California Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1525/california/9780520294134.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter sheds light on the foundational Timurid period in Afghan history during the fifteenth century that saw important and enduring religious institutions founded in the capital city of Herat and other urban centers. The chapter focuses on the ways in which Timurid women of the ruling class patronized shrine and mosque architecture with their own private funds. The most audacious of these female patrons, Queen Gawhar Shad (r. 1405-47), broke the longstanding traditional taboo that banned women from patronizing mosques. She built not one but two mosques; moreover, the mosques in question were not just ordinary places of worship but were prestigious Friday mosques, institutions that stood at the intersection of political and religious power. The chapter draws on original Persian records alongside contemporary European scholarship to provide an overview of Afghan women’s role in shaping the religious landscape of medieval Afghanistan.

Kollar, Nathan. Defending Religious Diversity in Public Schools. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400638749.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume shows how and why our public schools should prepare to understand and deal with religious diversity in the United States and the world. Defending Religious Diversity in Public Schools: A Practical Guide for Building Our Democracy and Deepening Our Education makes a powerful case for exposing students to the multiplicity of faiths practiced in the United States and around the world—then offers a range of practical solutions for promoting religious understanding and tolerance in the school environment. Nathan Kollar's timely volume centers on the common issues associated with respecting religion in people's lives, including religious identities, the religious rights of students, bullying and other acts of intolerance, and legal perspectives on what should and should not happen in the classroom. It then focuses on the skills teachers, counselors, and administrators need to master to address those issues, including forming an advocacy coalition, listening, cultural analysis, conflict resolution, institutional development, choosing a leader, and keeping up to date with all the latest research developments from both the legal and educational communities.
