Walters, Noel. "Religion, Religiosity, and Attitudes Toward Immigrants| The Influence of American Mainline Religions on Sociopolitical Views." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1589658.
Full textThe growth in recent decades of less traditionally religious groups has inspired a reevaluation of the effect of religious tradition and religiosity on sociopolitical attitudes, particularly attitudes toward immigrants. Additionally, the historic increase in Mexican and Central American immigrants to the U.S. has fixed national attention on immigration reform. Despite a consensus concerning the need for immigration reform in the U.S., existing literature, surveys, and public commentary have shown that issues of immigration foster atypical patterns of support and opposition, particularly among religious groups. As a result, research examining the effects of religious tradition and religiosity on attitudes toward immigrants has yielded contradictory results.
Using data from the 2004 General Social Survey, the author aims to construct a more nuanced theoretical framework that distinguishes between the effects of religious tradition and religiosity on attitudes toward immigrants. Among the most notable findings are that members of less traditionally religious groups, those with lower religiosity, and more highly educated respondents have more positive attitudes toward immigrants, while greater perceived economic and cultural threats posed by immigrants create more negative attitudes. The author also finds that religiosity has different effects on attitudes toward immigrants for Black Protestants compared to white Evangelical Protestants. Additional findings and their implications are discussed.

Karsten, Anja. "Knowledge and attitudes of religious leaders towards HIV/AIDS." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50387.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Religion plays a significant role in the structuring of people's identities and perceptions and also has the potential to playa fundamental role to determine how communities respond to HIV/AIDS. Faith-based organisations are respected in their communities and have existing resources, structures and systems in place. People who are diagnosed with HIV often turn to the church where they receive emotional and spiritual support. The primary objective of this study was to determine the knowledge of religious leaders about HIV/AIDS and their attitudes towards people living with it. A non-experimental quantitative research design was used in this study and the data was gathered through a structured questionnaire. The respondents were not exceptionally informed about the transmission of the HI-virus, but their knowledge around the risk of specific sexual behaviour was high and their attitudes towards PLHA generally positive.

Full textReligious beliefs are important to many people and shape their point of view of how they see the world, affecting their behaviors. Religion can be a powerful force of social motivation, yet there is a default of religious beliefs in research on mental health. It is known that people who have mental disease suffer from stigmatization, linked to different beliefs that predominate over the years. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate attitudes and religious beliefs toward the mentally ill and mental illness. It´s a descriptive-correlational study, with a sample of 142 individuals. The instruments of data collection were: a socio-demographic questionnaire; Opinions about Mental Illness Scale; and Religious Beliefs about Mental Illness Scale. The results show that people who associate mental illness to religious beliefs, present more positive attitudes towards these patients. Men are more likely to attribute mental illness to spiritual causes and women present more negative attitudes. Older people believe that mental illness is a consequence of sin, and younger people show more negative attitudes to this subject. People who knew someone with mental illness presented lower results in the religious beliefs scale, and showed more negative attitudes, as the authoritarianism. So, despite all of the information available, there are still religious beliefs associated with these diseases that may lead to more negative attitudes towards people who suffer from them.

Full textReligion as culture shapes the worldview of its subscribers and thence attitude formation and preferences of individuals towards many topics including the environment. Research interest in the impact of religion soared in the late 1960s, in response to White's (1967) article in Science claiming that a huge burden of guilt for the environment crisis rested on the shoulders of Christianity. Although this Dominion Hypothesis highlights the contrast between Christianity and other religions, the contrast has not been addressed in systematic comparative cross-national research assessing whether Christians hold more negative environmental attitudes than other world religions. This dissertation fills that research gap. The Dominion Hypothesis does not exhaust the potential impacts of religion on environmentalism. For example, social psychology posits the importance of experience as well as of culture on attitudes about matters one encounters directly, so the dissertation posits the Direct Experience Hypothesis and confirms the differentiation of local from global environmental attitudes. Moreover, social psychology also directs our attention to the Reverence Hypothesis, that a subjective side effect of religiosity is reverence and responsibility for nature. To address the Dominion Hypothesis that Christians hold less environmentalist attitudes than their peers in other religious traditions, the direct experience effect, and the Reverence Hypothesis, this dissertation includes descriptive analysis, psychometric scale evaluations, OLS regression, and multilevel modeling of data from the pooled World Values Survey/European Values Survey. Findings are mixed on the Dominion Hypothesis, but consistently support the Direct Experience and Reverence Hypotheses.

Full textRelated to the senegalese matters, this research has achieved a trend reversal as it has been trying to connect two topics usually dissociated : Language and religion. However, this issue is merely based on a sociolinguistic matters and the senegalese liguistic behaviour has exclusively been brought up. The main theory is built on several questions : within the ongoing sociolinguistic framework, why the study of the religious variant has been obscured or under-estimated ? In a country strongly marked by a socioethnic, linguistic and confessional pluralism, what are the linguistic behaviours that has been uprising from various religious group's value system ? does the brotherhood aspect which is embedded over the majority of senegalese muslim's mentality, bring up specificity ? What are the behaviours that come along with arabic language within a non-arab nation that is predominantly muslim ? Can the speaker assume the characterisation of "sacred language" related to that idiom ? Can these judgements be an impact on the linguistic pattern ? If so, in what way ? What would explain the paradox between a positive symbolic capital about the arabic language and an unconventional sociolinguistic situation ?

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The revised norms and standards for teacher education requires an understanding of the beliefs, values and practices of the main religions of South Africa. However, many preservice teachers have emerged from backgrounds of monoreligious education, or from schools where Religious education was discarded from the curriculum. This situation implies that pre-service teachers may lack the knowledge and skills to cope within a religiously pluralist school environment. This study argues therefore that the attitudes and perceptions of pre-service teachers towards Religious education in particular and religions in general will be positively influenced by means of a programme of intervention. The main aim of this study is to examine strategies for teaching religion to pre-service teachers to equip them for the religious and cultural diversity of South African classrooms. F euerstein' s theory of Mediated Learning Experience (MLE) is examined as a vehicle for initiating new and creative ways of thinking about religions. Ten criteria for MLE are implemented within a context of co-operative small group learning on the grounds that learning about religions should take place in a constructivist paradigm. The potential influence of a tutor/mediator on the perceptions and attitudes of pre-service teachers towards religions other than their own is therefore a significant theme in this study. The influence of a programme of intervention on student attitudes towards religion and Religious education was determined within an action-enquiry research model. The empirical research indicates that active participation in the learning process not only enhanced student participants' knowledge and understanding of religious concepts, but also fostered the value of an unbiased, positive approach to the study of religions.
