Full text
Abstract:
The notion of the + calendar year ; is one of the most used notions in an economic time-span, both in terms of theoretical analysis (it serves as a basis to mesure the growth that is part of it), as well as for the practice of the various protagonists (for instance, in the field of accountancy processing). The pre-eminence of the + yearly basis ; is to be noted, of course, in the qualitative term of + natural ;, wich is often attached to it. Yet, it appears that this + naturalism ; is not quite as obvious as it seems. Historian approaches, as attempted here today, show that it is, indeed, the result of human construction, most often of an antagonistic nature. This would explain why, today, this principle is contradicted in many circles. The thesis looks at three successive approaches: an assessment as to how the notion of an economic time-span appeared in history, specifically a study of debates around the creation of double entry book-keeping, bearing in mind some of the + replies ; given to it by economic sciences (with regards to time analysis in economics) ; the ways in which the notion of+ economic time ; was effectively created, in opposition to, or in support of, other representations put forward by thinking minds of the time; there, the analysis is focused on religious representations that remained dominant for a long time, in particular during some historical schismatic moments (protestant reform, islam); the two previous stages lead to the main issue: how did the + economic time unit ; come about? this research is being carried out, partly, through some of the gains of economic anthropology. If, at present, + yearly-based accountancy ; appears under threat, the consequences of this questioning remain nonetheless to be assessed, in terms of economic pratices and analyses

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on the role of faith-based reasoning in political discussion, and more specifically on the compatibility of public religious arguments with liberal and democratic premises regarding the justification of political decisions, i.e. decisions made in the name of the state. Public justification is a requirement of legitimacy in liberal democracy: but under which conditions is a decision publicly justified? Are all arguments valid? Religious arguments are often considered with suspicion: they are particular, therefore convincing for only some citizens and rejected by others. It seems unfair, for those who do not share religious beliefs, to use these arguments to justify political decisions. The same objection, however, is also true for many other non-religious arguments, like utilitarian arguments or liberal arguments themselves. The purpose of the dissertation is to examine different strategies aiming to justify the exclusion of certain arguments, and then to offer a new model of political discussion. The claim defended is that absolutist arguments, meaning arguments that are based on the recognition of the existence of an extra-social source of normative validity, do not respect the requirements of public justification and consequently should be excluded from political discussion. The distinction between absolutist and non-absolutist arguments does not overlap with the distinction between religious and secular arguments: it thus cannot be argued that all religious arguments should always be excluded, or that they could always be included

Örtquist, Frida. "Can the Subaltern be heard? : A Discussion on ethical strategies for Communication in a Postcolonial World." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Teologiska institutionen, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-323269.

Abstract:
This thesis relies on the works of Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and Seyla Benhabib in the field of Postcolonialism. Guided by their theoretical insights it is aiming at providing an understanding of how postcolonial structures within the International Humanitarian Aid discourse takes form and discuss strategies for communication that would be deemed justified in this context. Through a field research in Lebanon, focusing on the Lebanese Red Cross and their methods used for communication, it provides a scrutiny of the theoretical insights of Spivak and Benhabib, in order to see how plausible they are when discussing the way Global Humanitarian Organizations operate in todays’ world. In the conclusive discussion, the study exposes the importance for these organizations to let go of their essentialist way of looking at the subaltern, continuously depriving her of her subject position. In a context of asymmetrical power relations, there is a need for these organizations to ”learn to learn from below”. The people of the Western world need to unlearn Western privilege to enable themselves to relate to people and communities outside of their own paradigm and thus create presuppositions for an ethical communication.

Steiner, Elizabeth. "A discussion of the Canaanite mythological background to the Israelite concept of eschatological hope in Isaiah 24-27." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2013. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:c50562f6-8f26-43ea-826c-b24d00e5686b.

Abstract:
The thesis begins with an overview of views concerning the dating of Isa 24–27 and its place within the genres of apocalyptic and eschatology, before stating its aim as showing how Canaanite myths were used by the author to give future hope rooted in cultic ideals. The second chapter looks at the image of the divine warrior, with particular emphasis on the chaos enemy as the dragon/serpent/sea, and the remarkable similarities between Isa 27:1 and the Ugaritic KTU 1.5.i.1–5. A possible cultic setting of the combat myth is examined, together with the question of why the myth appears here in an eschatological manner. The following chapter discusses the Israelite and Canaanite traditions concerning the holy mountain and divine banquet. Zion motifs are compared with those of Mt. Zaphon, and the nature of cultic feasts considered in Israelite and Canaanite literature, as well as later traditions. Chapter Four argues that the verses concerning death and resurrection represented exile/oppression and restoration, at a time when ideas of resurrection and judgment after death were emerging. The Israelite imagery of Mot/Death and Sheol are examined in relation to the nature of Ugaritic Mot, showing how Canaanite traditions were used to demonstrate Yahweh’s might and the possibility of individual and universal restoration. The following chapter places Israelite religion within the context of Canaanite fertility cults and popular practices. That myth and cult are connected is the basis for the view that the themes in Isa 24–27 were passed down to the post-exilic era via cultic activities and the reuse of myths to promote Yahweh, whether the author was aware that he was using ancient, mythological ideas or not. The sixth chapter gives a short overview of hope in the Hebrew Bible, before demonstrating how the universalism of Isa 24–27 combines with the ancient mythic themes to provide an eschatological hope in an all-encompassing deity. The paper concludes that the author of these chapters deliberately used Canaanite mythology to show how the final victory, rule, and celebration of Yahweh would bring about a personal and moral victory for all nations.

Marzolf, Hedwig. "Une “morale de la finitude” : contribution Kantienne au débat contemporain entre théologie et philosophie." Paris 4, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007PA040072.

Full text
Abstract:
What audience, what value and what meaning can and must philosophy give to the ethical claim of religion and theologists? The aporia of the current debates between theologists and philosophers (indeed the ethicists under discussion) lead us to exploit the ressources of Kantian philisophy in order to respond to its fundamental stake, that is, to accomplish the program of an “ethics of finitude” that brings together the central value of our modernity, autonomy and the lucid recognition of the radicality of finitude. We can in fact show how, with and through “transcendental theology”, “supreme principle” of Kant’s trancendental philosophy in the Opus postumum, a theory of practical finite subjectivity is elaborated. In consequence, religion unveils itself as an “aesthetic of pure practical reason” offering the finite subject a language in which to formulate a moral experience which is always problematic. We thus envisage the transformations of the theology that theologians as well as philosophers must take into account in order to pursue a dialogue that Jürgen Habermas wished to be a “mutual apprentiship”. The paradox of the de-theologization of theology is accepted in order to push away the specter of a religion that covers the moral and in so doing annihilates the autonomy which is its nucleus. Religion can then be lived essentially as something practically imaginary, through feelings such as respect, but also through a wider range of feelings that go from admiration of nature to the aesthetic experience in general

Swain, Stacie A. "Armed with an Eagle Feather Against the Parliamentary Mace: A Discussion of Discourse on Indigenous Sovereignty and Spirituality in a Settler Colonial Canada, 1990-2017." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/36887.

Full text
Abstract:
Canada 150, or the sesquicentennial anniversary of Confederation, celebrates a nation-state that can be described as “settler colonial” in relation to Indigenous peoples. This thesis brings a Critical Religion and Critical Discourse Analysis methodology into conversation with Settler Colonial and Indigenous Studies to ask: how is Canadian settler colonial sovereignty enacted, and how do Indigenous peoples perform challenges to that sovereignty? The parliamentary mace and the eagle feather are conceptualized as emblematic and condensed metaphors, or metonyms, that assert and represent Canadian and Indigenous sovereignties. As a settler colonial sovereignty, established and naturalized partially through discourses on religion, Canadian sovereignty requires the displacement of Indigenous sovereignty. In events from 1990 to 2017, Indigenous people wielding eagle feathers disrupt Canadian governance and challenge the legitimacy of Canadian sovereignty. Indigenous sovereignty is (re)asserted as identity-based, oppositional, and spiritualized. Discourses on Indigenous sovereignty and spirituality provide categories and concepts through which Indigenous resistance occurs within Canada.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates if and how the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) uses its websites to create a public sphere. Since the end of apartheid this church and its media had to adapt to the changing environment in South Africa, particularly in its increasing use of the new media to involve believers and non-believers. Because of the internet’s potential to connect people from all over the world and its interactivity, scholars assert that the internet can create a public sphere. Habermas’ idea of the public sphere, a conceptual space where critical public discourse takes place and anyone can participate, forms the theoretical underpinning for this study. This theory, however, is slightly adapted by arguing that conflict – within bounds – is also part of the communication process within the public sphere. This study focuses on seven active websites of the DRC in order to examine its relation to public theology from a critical cultural perspective. The ideals of public theology closely relates to that of the public sphere. These ideals are a public debate on issues relating to the common good, which are discussed from a religious stance. A central view is that regulation can hinder the forming of a public sphere. Thus the nature and level of regulation on the church’s websites are examined. The nature of interaction between users and content on websites is also studied. This study combines qualitative and quantitative methods, including semi structured interviews, questionnaires, content analysis and systematic observation. The study found that Kerkbode’s Facebookpage facilitates a lively forum for debate on issues that advances the public sphere. The Facebookpage of the DRC has the potential to create such debates. On both these websites and Kerkbode-online and NG Kerk-online, regulation on midlevel curbs this potential. Other obstacles for creating a public sphere that was identified on the DRC’s websites, were personal insults, too narrow focus on internal church affairs and low participation in topics that could advance the public sphere.

This ethnographical research aims to discuss homosexuality in the context of Igreja Evangélica de Confissão Luterana in Brazil – IECLB, trying to comprehend how the IECLB has been facing this discussion. Besides the analysis of official documents of the institution, this research focuses on a religious community located in Pelotas/RS to observe how the community has (or has not) been discussing and how it has stood on this topic, as well as how the people who live in this community are using the scriptures to justify and normalize the sexual and affective behavior. This research is based on the perspectives of feminists’ theories and queer theory bringing discussions about the “polemic” topics in the religious view, which are most of the time muted. In this way, this work permits an introduction to the discussion about the way of pointing out the view of the people from IECLB, the ministers and the community where the ethnography was made, aiming the perspective they mention about the topic of homosexuality in the religious context.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Both pro-life and pro-choice viewpoints on the moral status of abortion have important insights to offer, but these insights can be difficult for opponents to discern and appreciate. This thesis seeks to uncover and explain some of the underlying moral convictions that inform debates on abortion. Such an inquiry, undertaken within the context of religious ethics, is important for several reasons. First, it educates the public about religious and moral beliefs that are often hidden behind popular slogans. Second, it reveals some common moral convictions, and it may point to the possibility of greater moral agreement. Third, it also reveals stark differences. These differences may continue to divide people, but they ought at least to be better understood. Fourth, this inquiry has the potential to deepen mutual understanding, respect, and civility among people who have strong feelings about abortion, but are also people of good will, for it challenges fellow citizens to encounter each other as intelligent, concerned individuals who are doing what they can to construct a social order that reflects their deepest religious and moral values.

The main object of this dissertation is the range of strategies of resistance that members of African matrix religions use to face acts of religious discrimination through the revival of underground memories that are transformed into a collective memory. It is assumed that the creation of this collective memory is based on the shared experiences in the terreiro through the re-signification of the individual underground memories. The objective of this research is to reveal and describe these resistance strategies in the school environment as a form of contribution to the struggle for religious freedom rights in Brazil. Furthermore, within this dissertation, research subjects narrate acts of religious intolerance and identify the main networks of protection and solidarity used by them, highlighted as references of resistance. The attempt is to contribute to the debate about religious intolerance in the Social Sciences, particularly Social Work, besides reinforcing the process of statement of positive identity of the members of African matrix religions. In terms of procedures, this research is built on investigation of such strategies, based on the testimonies of eight subjects of the field research who are members of the Centro Espírita Casa do Perdão and the Templo Espírita Caboclo Flecheiro. These are Umbanda temples located in the Zona Oeste and the Zona Norte of the city of Rio de Janeiro, respectively. The subjects are considered coauthors of this research to the extent that not only information, but also perceptions and interpretations, were extracted from their testimonies of experiences of religious intolerance in the school. The selection of these subjects was carried out base on the appointments of the religious leader of each temple, taking into consideration the following criteria: to be an Umbanda member since childhood and to result in a variety of social rolls between the subjects. This was necessary in order to understand how religious intolerance presents itself in different settings. The testimonials were triggered by the denial of the existence of discrimination through the question: Umbanda members do not suffer discrimination in school, would you agree? The answers offer a variety of narratives about religious intolerance in the school, as well as in other social spaces, such as: public spaces, marketplaces, family relations and the job market. The main resistance strategies that are identified cover a range of behaviors: from public display of pride and deep attachment to the religious precepts and conceptions, to omission (silencing and concealment) as a form of self-protection, to open and direct confrontation. It is worth noting that the research took into consideration two terreiros that display a common characteristic: having a social, religious and political organization that is the basis for the training of its members to perceive, interpret and combat acts of religious intolerance. This perspective strengthens the sense of religious belonging and, through a collective social and political experience, creates the environment for the memory of acts of discrimination to be revealed and to become the foundation of the social struggle or spiritual refuge. Therefore, these terreiros, that are centers of social and political movements, are understood as important references in the process of the construction of social resistance.

Abstract:
Abstract This essay takes as its starting point that the Swedish classroom often is an intercultural environment and that it is therefore important to address issues connected to ethnocentrism in it. In this essay I examine how the novel The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid can be used in schools to raise such ethnocentric issues. The novel’s didactic potential becomes clear by capturing some of the views held by the book’s protagonist as an alternative to Western ethnocentric concepts. Furthermore, the ambiguity of the novel allows for students to reflect on the identification processes that produce ethnocentrism. The power of nostalgia is also discussed in this essay, and with it nostalgia’s possibly alluring, yet counterproductive qualities. Together, these topics and themes from The Reluctant Fundamentalist combine to illuminate a use of literature within the context of intercultural education. Keywords: Intercultural education, Ethnocentrism, Calvinism, Islam, Capitalism.

Dominant cultures exist in many different guises, yet may function almost invariably in symbiosis with double standards and discrimination. However, these acts are often only recognised by those being subjected to them, not by those practising the same. Selective concern and empathy depending on who the practitioners happen to be, as well as who the recipients of said acts are, actually helps to illustrate the precise definitions of these terms.

Abstract:
South Africa is a land of extraordinary beauty, ecological diversity and abundance. However, the land that God has entrusted to us is crying for justice. During the years of struggle against apartheid several ecumenical documents addressed the issues of the day. The Letter to the People of South Africa (1968), the Kairos Document (1985), the Evangelical Witness in South Africa (1986), the Road to Damascus (1989) and the Rustenburg Declaration (1990) may be mentioned in this regard. In the same ecumenical and prophetic spirit, this document seeks to address the escalating destruction of our environment that results in immense suffering for people, for other living species and for our land as a whole. In responding to this challenge Christians in South Africa may recognise, acknowledge and learn from the many voices and contributions on environmental concerns coming from all over the world — from churches and ecumenical movements, from the Earth Charter movement, from other religious traditions and from environmental organisations. The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) - 26 August to 4 September 2002, Johannesburg - also challenges the churches in South Africa to respond to these concerns.

Moore, Lisa M. M. "Widow as the Altar of God| Retrieving Ancient Sources for Contemporary Discussions on Christian Discipleship." Thesis, Marquette University, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=13864292.

Full text
Abstract:

Recent accounts of the history of Christian theology tend to neglect material concerning widows in antiquity and their contribution to Christian discipleship. In this dissertation I would like to offer a corrective along the lines of studying the contribution of widows in Jewish and Christian antiquity to the Catholic tradition. In particular, I contend that the Jewish roots of the widows’ contribution to Christian theology is also overlooked. The idea of the widow as an “altar of God,” which emerges in early Church literature, requires an understanding of the history of widows and the altar in Jewish and Christian antiquity.

What can be gleaned from mentions of widows, especially the enrolled widows, in the early Church? Firstly, enrolled widows in the early Church had historical precedents in the Old Testament that are sometimes overlooked by scholars, particularly in the omission of the Old Testament widow Judith. Secondly, the altar in Jewish and early Christian antiquity is significant; the altar has many functions and nuances of meaning, which are essential to understand the motif of the widow as the altar of God. Thirdly, these widows in the early Church offer a challenging Christian ethos, which derives from their good works and from a rootedness in ascetic practices that comprise a whole way of life for Christian discipleship.

By and large, extant material on the order of widows dwindles after the fourth century A.D. The history of widows in Jewish and Christian antiquity can inform recent endeavors in the Church to revitalize the ancient vocation of widowhood, and that of belonging to an order of widows. This dissertation proposes to trace the trajectory of the contribution of widows in antiquity to Catholic theology. Moreover, by exploring what the early Church meant when it referred to the widow as the “altar of God,” especially in light of the altar’s many functions, I hope to shed light on an ancient and little studied practice in the Church. I will then show how this study of ancient Christian widows can inform two recent endeavors in the United States to renew the order of widows.

This study aims to investigate, based on characters testimony s from the documentary Santo Forte, directed by Eduardo Coutinho, the pursuit of individual happiness and the fulfillment of human insufficiency by their religious beliefs and experiences. Taking into account this purpose, the idea is to highlight, considering the term devised by Blaise Pascal and conceptualized by Luiz Felipe Pondé - human insufficiency - that men/people need and are dependent on the supernatural world, precisely to fill the void which is inherent and that haunts them. In view of their mystical experiences and religious trajectory, the film's characters show a greater acceptance to their lives, due to the communication that they have with the sacred. In other words, it is clear that the relationship which men have with gods and entities gives them hope in the face of their endless reserve/tendency to suffering. This research also focuses to make considerations about the men s dependence towards the supernatural, which is necessary to ensure perpetual and rational pursuit of individuals with regard to happiness and well-being. This is noticeable from the emphasis on utilitarianism - principle developed by Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill that indicates a natural man s search towards happiness and for annulment of misery and pain

Abstract:
The first chapter introduces the thesis and explores the historical background and trends in society and education in and since the 1940s, especially the social, theological and educational scene. Chapter two shows that the term Christian Education has sometimes referred to a particular understanding of religious education. That usage is analysed and found to be unacceptable without significant qualifications. The next four chapters clarify and analyse the understanding of the term Christian Education in four further contexts where it is used: Church schools (chapter three), longstanding independent schools (chapter four), recently established Christian schools (chapter five) and the education of people in the church context itself (chapter six). Chapter seven considers the arguments Paul Hirst has made against the acceptability of the concept of Christian Education and contends that these arguments are not valid. This chapter also points out that the five contexts where the term Christian Education is used (as explored in chapters 2 -6), do not include the county schools, except that the first usage explored was the religious education in county schools. In view of this the chapter maintains that it is important to explore the relationship of Christian values and principles to education in county schools, a task undertaken in the final chapter. The last chapter asserts that Christian values and principles still have valid implications for education in county schools and that education based on these values and principles can legitimately be described as Christian Education. Aspects of a Christian view of creation and fallenness are used as illustrations and the possibility of relating a Christian View of redemption to education in county schools is also considered.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to describe one educational sequence in religious education.  The study shows articulations and negotiations in the religious education classroom, as well as on digital discussion forums. Two questions are the core of the explorative case study. What is communicated between teachers and students in a Re-classroom in Sweden? How does the content of the communication contribute to constructing the Re-subject in two different discussion forums: digital and analogue? The case study follows an upper secondary school class, with 18 years old students, during one teaching sequence. The theoretical foundation is based in a social-cultural perspective. Data is produced by ethnographic methods and consist of classroom observations and interviews with teachers and students. For the interpretation of speech Even’s relief theory is used concerning what is said and Michel Bakhtin’s thoughts on speech genre concerning how it is expressed and negotiated in the teaching sequence. The analysis of the different forums show that in all of them, teachers and students tend to focus on what religious persons do, their appearance, and how they are limited by their faith. The religious persons are compared to a way of living according to a secular norm that the students find more relevant and up-to-date. When speaking of religious persons the students tend to express it in a derisive and disparaging way. Negotiations on content and framework factors interrupt the actual teaching in the classroom environment whilst digital forums are self-regulating and discussions quickly return to the topic after irrelevant digressions. In the discussion part of the thesis the various discussion forums are evaluated didactically. The impact of gender and framework factors on the student-teacher discussions is also raised. An additional question that is problematized is the tension between the curriculum of the subject and the teacher’s desire to get students interested in religion as a subject, described as ‘the teacher’s dilemma’. It is discussed whether this dilemma controls the teacher’s choice of subject.

Abstract:
Martin Heidegger in 'The Origin of the Work of Art' seeks to approach the self-subsistent nature of art. The Greek Temple opens up a space within which our Being may dwell. It is the site of human civilization and religion, and of our capacity to dwell within abstractions like peace, justice, truth and representation. Art breaks open a new place and presents things in a fresh light. Language is the primary model for this activity. Paul Celan in his poetry offers a challenge to Heideggerian abstraction. Both poet and philosopher were intimately familiar with each other's work, yet there is no essay on Celan, or even a reference, in the entire Heideggerian corpus. Celan's poem 'The Straitening' conveys the breakdown of meaning that has occurred after the holocaust. In form and content it challenges any Heideggerian notion of the higher univocity achieved by great poetry. We will explore recent examples of how poets have examined the idea of cultural belonging exclusion. We present a distillation of this idea in the writings of Paul Celan, particularly his presentation of the moment of 'Shibboleth'. We explore the biblical origin of the term 'Shibboleth' in a conflict between the army of Jephtah and the Ephraimites. We look at a contemporary poem with 'shibboleth' as it theme. Seamus Heaney's 'Broagh'. A consistent theme of Maurice Blanchot's critical reflection from The Work of Fire in 1949 up to and including The Space of Literature in 1955, is the manner in which our being creatures unto death allows us to create art, and to think and write in the abstraction that is language. Life endures death and maintains itself in it. For Blanchot Rainer Maria Rilke is one of the most significant modern poets in the way in which he has presented and explored this theme. We challenge Blanchot's inadequate reading of Rilke in The Space of Literature as an instance of his own pre-conceived philosophical nihilism.

With regard to the subject of ultimate concern, people fear death, know nothing about afterdeath, and find it difficult to let go of what you’ve possessed in the real world, which needs wisdom of viewing life by death derived from people’s spiritual sublimation and religious detachment of life and death. Different religions possess different wisdom of life and death because of various life attitude and faith culture. This thesis explains life and death view between the three main religions and eastern and western philosophy via “Comparative Science Between Life and Death”. To be free from the misery and to seek to live on Buddhafield are the ultimate concerns of Buddhism. And for Taoism, the concernment of death is to master the essence of Taoism, achieving taostic immortality. However, Christianity was born of Judaism, whose ultimate concern is to return to God’s home, namely, to obtain eternal life. The life and death view of western philosophy was further explored through the idea of “immortal soul” proposed by the three main western sages. Socrates and Plato both held the view that soul could only break away from the constraint of flesh and be purified in a method of restraining carnal desires (like sexual passion, material desire and stubbornness). While Socrates thought the purified soul could go back to the eternal “ideal state”, and Plato believed the soul had been contaminated by the lust of flesh and wouldn’t transcend to the ideal state, on the contrary, it would fall into the continuous metempsychosis. Epicurus was the first “sensualist” in the western history. He attached particular importance to joyous life and deemed people should be happy physically and mentally, instead of being afraid of death. The philosophers of “existentialism” consider life is the “existence toward death”. The gist of this thesis is divided into four sections, the sketch is as follows: 1. The historical evolution of religion and ultimate concern. 2. The life and death view of the three main religions. 3. Life and death view of eastern and western philosophy. 4. Ethical dilemma of life and death. 5. Prepare for death – The religions division of contribution for life and death.

Olwagen, Carin. "Integrating psychology and spirituality to open up discussion on spiritual identity and its effects on the whole person in a counselling context." Diss., 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/26963.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 127-134
Integrating psychology and spirituality to open up discussion on spiritual identity and its effects on the whole person was birthed in a counselling context, as individuals sought answers for various problems, having an effect on their psychological and spiritual well-being. The body, soul and spirit approach unfolded, as we explored their identity, more specifically, their spiritual identity, thus integrating psychology and spirituality. The aim was to explore how the discovery of their spiritual identity had an effect on them holistically. I chose a qualitative research design because my research questions required the collection and analysis of rich, in-depth data regarding participants’ psychological and spiritual journeys (Phipps, & Vorster, 2011; Ryan, 2006). My data collection method was twofold, using both in-depth interviews (narrative storytelling), as the initial stage for the individual to tell their story and the effects on their psychological and spiritual well-being, as well as semi-structured interviews (brainstorming), as the second stage in the research. The objective was to see what effects the problem had on them as a whole person. I used two stages of data analysis to reach this objective namely a collaborative deconstruction technique, together with the individual as the first stage and secondly a thematic analysis to interpret the main messages, patterns that repeated, as well as the highlights, having an effect on them as a whole. The results confirmed that individuals “discover” their spiritual identity when their self-identity reaches a limit of coping with problems and have more positive effects on them as whole persons. The significance of the research is that it has contributed to a more integrated counselling approach, within psychology, for counsellors and psychologists, to explore spiritual identity with the individual. Through the integration of seeing individuals as whole beings, including a spiritual dimension, awareness was created within the counselling context of the value of seeing individuals in a more integrative and holistic manner. Such a psycho-spiritual integrative approach is more relevant in the field of counselling in journeying with individuals in wholeness and affecting their dimensions of body, soul and spirit positively in the context of identity.

"清代的僧人與國家: 以護僧榜文為例的討論 = Monks and the state during the Qing : a discussion of the official placards of protecting monks." 2015. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6116075.

Abstract:
Most previous research on relations between monks and the state focused on the state regulations, and ignored the monks’ subjective initiative. In Comparison, this thesis centers on the various Official Placards of Protecting Monks in the Qing dynasty and tries to discuss the relationship between monks and the state from a bottom-up perspective. Those placards, taken by not a few monks, were similar to imperial edicts in format, emphasizing the state’s amiable position toward monks. Occasionally, people posted these placards on the wall, or carved them on the stele, or printed them out, in order to expand influence. As a matter of fact, Qing emperors had never issued such a kind of edict. Therefore, the so-called Official Placards of Protecting Monks were counterfeited by certain monks for their own sakes. On the one hand, it was difficult for many commoners to tell the authenticity of these placards. On the other, the majority of local officials and elites did not bother themselves with these placards. Nevertheless, a few local elites took advantage of these very placards to promulgate Buddhism and protect monks and their temples. In sum, the Official Placard of Protecting Monks throws light on another aspect of the relationship between the state and the monks, revealing that monks were by no means passive receiver of state regulation. On the contrary, by manipulating the credit of the state, they were able to produce, spread and capitalize on the so-called "state regulations" in their own interests.

Bardon, Aurelia. "Religious Arguments in Political Discussion: A Theory of Public Justification." Thesis, 2014. https://doi.org/10.7916/D8WS8RF0.

Full text
The distinction between absolutist and non-absolutist arguments does not overlap with the distinction between religious and secular arguments: it thus cannot be argued that all religious arguments should always be excluded, or that they could always be included.

Religion plays an important role in society. It fulfills the spiritual needs of individuals, and places moral restrictions on them. However, if handled inappropriately, can religion cause individuals to behave in a hypocritical manner and lose their moral balance? Currently, we should make full use of the influence religion has on individuals' morality to effectively unleash the intrinsic enlightening function of religion. The research objectives are as follows: firstly, to investigate the current trend in religious beliefs and codes of ethics; secondly, to examine the relationship between religious beliefs and donor behavior; lastly, to explore the life experiences of individual donors. The research questions are as follows: after a successful donor match of hematopoietic stem cells between non-blood relations, some people are still willing to donate hematopoietic stem cells. What are the motives behind this behavior, and what are their individual views on values? What are the important milestones in the life of a donor during the donating process? What are the impacts on individual donors and their suggestions after a donation has been completed? This study used qualitative research methods and the research subjects were individuals who participated in hematopoietic stem cell activities. In the research process, the researcher utilized case interviews, participant observation, and literature review to organize, analyze and consolidate the data collected. Three conclusions were reached as a result of this study: 1) Religious beliefs provide spiritual fulfillment; 2) Religious beliefs act as a medium in which inner values are transformed into outward action; 3) Religious education promotes dialogues between people of different faiths. Based on these conclusions, the author offers specific recommendations to administrative authorities, advocacy workers, and future researchers. The following three primary recommendations are given based on this research as follows: 1.) Establish a multi-channel advocacy and promotion network and utilize diverse advocacy channels to provide for the needs of the community; 2) Increase the contribution of social resources. 3. Equal weight should be assigned to research and ethics.

This paper discusses the present situation of religious attitude and religious behavior of students from the mainland China in Taiwan and analyzes the differences of religious attitude and religious behavior between different variables of the student’s background, which help to understand the related patterns and reasons of religious attitude and religious behavior of the students from the mainland China in Taiwan. This study used the method of questionnaire to quote Qu, Hai-Yuan “Basic Survey of Social Changes in Taiwan” (1994, 1999) as a revised research tool. A sample of mainland students from two universities in Tamsui were selected as research samples.According to the participants anwsers in the survey, the findings are as follows after analysis and disscussions: The study found that the religious attitude of the students from the mainland China in Taiwan was low ,the religious behavior of students from the mainland China in Taiwan was low, and the religious attitude of students from the mainland China in Taiwan could explain the religious behavior: The "religious attitude" has an explanatory power of 35% (0.355) of the " R square value of religious behavior. On the whole, the students from the mainland China in Taiwan was influenced by Rationalism and Marxisim, the results of this study show that religious attitude and religious behavior have 35% explanatory power, which can explain the religious behavior of he Students from the mainland China in Taiwan from the viewpoint of soul, good and evil, harmony between Yin and Yang and the circulation of the spirit. But the remaining 64% cannot be explained, which needs further investigation. Compared with the previous researches, the attitude of religious of the Students from the mainland China in Taiwan is low, their acceptances on "Fate View", " debt of gratitude " are at the lowest level, the people on both sides of the strait agree that self effort can change fate. The level of religious behavior of the students from the mainland China in Taiwan are low. The level of behavior of "worship ancestor" of the students from the mainland China in Taiwan and Hsinchu High school students are both high, and the acceptance degree of " Divination " behavior from people on both strait sides are not high either."

Humanistic Buddhism’s study and practice is deep in sutra, society, the human world, and the Dharma Realm. Under the Bodhi tree, Buddha watched stars at night, and realized the cause and conditions of the world. The cause and conditions include the relationship between people, people and things, and people and materials. When living in the world, we must "develop broad and good affinity with others" and create "happiness and peace." Loving Kindness, Compassion, Joy, and Equanimity, are the four Immeasurable Minds. Venerable Master Hsing-Yun presented Four Givings from the four Immeasurable Minds, and provided the possibility of Dharma practice. Venerable Master Hsing-Yun has made the Working Creeds for Buddha’s Light Members based on the four Immeasurable Minds, "Give Others Faith" - Immeasurable Minds of Loving Kindness, " Give Others Hope " - Immeasurable Minds of Compassion, " Give Others Joy " - Immeasurable Minds of Joy, " Give Others Convenience " - Immeasurable Minds of Equanimity. Four givings and four Immeasurable Minds which cultivate Blessing, Virtue, and the Right Causes and Conditions, improve the friendly relationships between people and promote social harmony and stability. The Master’s "Four Givings" provide the core concept of " Humanistic Buddhism". "Four Givings " and Buddha’s Light Association working creeds make " Humanistic Buddhism " in practice. This thesis combines the studies of the Venerable Master Hsing-Yun, reference to the relevant literatures analysis, core teachings of Buddhism, "Four Givings": Loving Kindness-Compassion-Joy-Equanimity, and my observations. I integrate "Four Givings" and "Four Main Objectives" of Fo Guang Shan to illustrate the practice of Humanistic Buddhism. For example, why does the Master want to promote Million-Member Fundraising Campaign, the importance of Buddhism education and also some other relevant themes have been discussed. This thesis is devoted to give an integrated discussion of the Master’s " Humanistic Buddhism " and "Four Givings" and hopes to reveal the practice of Humanistic Buddhism.

Aromatic plants are inextricable linked with religion, as the plants were used in many religious ceremonies since ancient times. In addition to the use of medical and living diets, aromatic plants are also commonly used in religious texts to evoke devotional sacred meanings. They were applied by myths, legends and folktales to imply world views such as social culture and system order at that time. This reflected the human perception of aromatic plants behind their prototypes and affect the close relationship between aromatic plants and religion. The use of aromatic plants can evoke the sacred meaning in religion, but few people provided integration discussions to concrete the idea forward. The effect of incense burning also lacked of academic discussion, especially in the field of human body and mind. Most of the aromatherapy practitioners only parrot the traditional text and can’t come up with a solid argument when faced with outside questions. However, if we do a comprehensive exploration of various myths, classics, literature, religious ritual activities, and even modern medicine, herbal therapy, aromatherapy, traditional medicine, etc., we may trace the use of aromatic plants on the impact of human body and mind through the religious and medical articles. Based on the Buddhism and Christian literature, this study explores the records related to aromatic plants in various related mythological and religious documents, and attempts to reinterpret the aromatic plants in religious culture from the perspective of modern aromatherapy, and the influence and application of aromatherapy on people’s religious beliefs, such as practice assistance. The author proposed the significance of essential oils extracted fromaromatic plants in professional aromatherapy.

Adam, Raoul J. "Fundamentalism and structural development: A conceptual synthesis and discussion of implications for religious education." Thesis, 2003. https://researchonline.jcu.edu.au/13/1/01front.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines religious fundamentalism in light of structural-developmental theory. Reciprocally, it provides a critique of the structural-developmental approach in light of its application to religious fundamentalism. The product is a conceptual synthesis between observed fundamentalist characteristics and the evolving tradition of developmentalism. The findings of this conceptual synthesis are used to generate principles for developmentally sensitive religious education. The thesis focusses on Protestant Christian Fundamentalism while utilising illustrative examples from diverse faith traditions described in current literature as fundamentalist.Findings revealed general congruency between early developmental structures and elements of fundamentalism. The contents and dynamics of fundamentalism resist the development of later stage structures. Hence, ontogenetic development is affected by the phylogenetic structure of the fundamentalist discourse; cultures can reflect stage-specific structuring tendencies and therefore affect individual development. Stage crises and transitions provide a powerful interpretive model for the dynamics of interaction between fundamentalism and other discourses. The analysis revealed the potential for a form of recapitulated fundamentalism prompted by dissonance between convergent epistemologies and emerging divergent epistemologies of later development. This suggests that purely content-based assessments of fundamentalism may not account for its developmental range. The recapitulation of fundamentalism and its appearance in phylogenetic forms challenges traditional developmental assumptions concerning stage progression. It provides a rationale for further investigation of the structuring powers of contents within the developmental discourse. This investigation necessitates the integration of concepts including compartmentalisation, cognitive dissonance and consonance into the structural developmental model. The thesis offers a theoretical defense of facilitated development beyond fundamentalism as a structural developmental representation. It proposes broad principles for the facilitation of such development in the context of schooled religious education. These principles of a developmentally sensitive religious education are holistic, dynamic, progressive, experiential, interpersonal, intrapersonal, meta-contextual, objectified and critically reflective.

Abstract:
This thesis argues that western societies are caught in a paradox: Individuals and groups are increasingly concerned about the harmful effects humanity is having on the earth's health, while at the same time environmental degradation increases and societies are doing relatively little to stop environmentally harmful actions. Chapter 1 explores the deeper roots of our current situation, arguing that westerners are caught up in a harmful ideology that prioritizes economic growth and material prosperity at all costs, which means that steps to protect the environment will not be undertaken if these steps will have negative (or even neutral) impacts on economic growth. Suggesting a theocentric (God-centered) alternative to this harmful ideology, chapter 2 defends the expression of openly religious perspectives in the public political discussions of environmental crises but also emphasizes the responsibility of all participants to dialogue in a respectful, civil manner and to be open to truths coming from marginal perspectives. Finally, chapter 3 gives a number of concrete suggestions for public policies that can address the roots of ecological degradation and engage citizens who are ready and willing to take steps to reduce their environmental footprint.

Masengwe, Gift. "The church's role in social healing and reconciliation in Zimbabwe : an analysis of reconciliation in the National Vision Discussion Document of the churches of Zimbabwe." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/207.

Full text
Abstract:
The study focuses on the National Vision Discussion Document (NVDD) from Zimbabwe, and is a reflection of the need for, and the churches’ approach to, reconciliation in Zimbabwe. The analysis of the social context in which the NVDD was written sets the tone for this study, and provides the basis for discussing and constructing a deeper theology of reconciliation in Zimbabwe. Two criticisms of the NVDD are advanced, namely, the lack for a critical social analysis, and a weak theological reflection. In responding to the first criticism, the study undertakes a detailed analysis of three key areas of enmity, namely, the ethnic conflicts between the Shona and Ndebele, the racial conflicts between white and black centered on land, and the political conflicts between ZANU-PF and civil society and the MDC. In responding to the second criticisms, the theology is deepened through an examination of Miroslav Volf’s, Exclusion and Embrace, John de Gruchy’s, Reconciliation: Restoring Justice, the Kairos Document and the Belhar Confession. Reconciliation was seen to lie at the edge of two parallel truths; justice and forgiveness; truth and reconciliation. In conclusion, the study established the basis for a deeper theology of reconciliation, by focusing on three key areas: social dynamics, theological reflection, and practical and logistical steps to national reconciliation. For a deeper theology of reconciliation, seven levels for reconciliation were suggested: individual, social, cultural, institutional, political, theological and religious. From these seven levels, two strategies for the practice of reconciliation were suggested: ecumenical and strategic partnerships. It should be noted that events in Zimbabwe continue to progress at a rapid rate and the social context changes from week to week. However, these current events suggest that the study remains relevant for national reconciliation and theological praxis because of the abiding issues of conflict that cry out for reconciliation.

For thousands of years, the meaning of the word bráhman has been the heart of the discussion in Indian religion and philosophy. It also has been the ultimate concern of a Hinduist. Although there are always variations in theories, rituals and idols among different Hinduism sects, we found that when we carefully review the spirit of these variations, they are all related to the quest for the absolute essence of the universe. Further, bráhman is indeed the abstraction of it. Based on the recognition of bráhman and the chase of it, another significant subject of Indian religion and philosophy had developed, named liberation (mokṣa). In the history of Indian religion and philosophy, the will of seeking for the abstraction bráhman seems to result from human’s deep reflection on the universe. Nevertheless, the result of this reflection is totally different from the sacrifice for gods existing in earlier vedic period. Therefore, it is doubtful if bráhman comes from vedic sacrifice or if bráhman and vedic sacrifice develop separately and even compete with each other? In this paper, I want to state that according to the idea of ritual and god, the abstraction bráhman definitely develops from the complicated ritual process in vedic religion. I assume that after the vedic sacrificial idea transfers from do ut des to do ut possis dare, and then this do ut possis dare idea influenced the development of abstraction bráhman.

The study focuses on the impact of the Boko Haram Muslim terrorist group on the socioeconomic well‐being and livelihood of the population in the north‐east of Nigeria. To research the social, economic, religious and political impact of attacks leading to the disruption of people in the north‐east who fled their homes for the safety of southern refugee camps, the study relies on three research questions to be answered, namely: Does the Boko Haram terrorist group pose a threat to the socio‐economic well‐being of people in north‐eastern Nigeria? How have Boko Haram terrorist attacks impacted on the livelihood of the population? What is a viable solution or intervention strategy to deal with the impact of and fight against terrorism in Nigeria in particular? The study adopts an in‐depth qualitative methodology. Different related research techniques are used in data collection and analysis. Focus group discussions, in‐depth interviews and documentary sources have different complementary strengths, which are more comprehensive when used together. Questionnaires will guide the discussions with groups of internally displaced people, who are the units of analysis. Data is gathered through snowball sampling of willing, available respondents to understand and explain their personal views and experiences, creating the meanings they have constructed around their disrupted livelihoods and well‐being in refugee camps. An overarching, broad conflict perspective is chosen, related to Dahrendorf’s views on power struggles of dominant interest groups, authority, inequality and marginalisation of opponents, which also includes complementary concepts of religiously inspired fundamentalist theory focusing on indoctrination, dominance, manipulation and marginalisation of interest groups. This broad conflict perspective will investigate the social, economic, political and religious impacts of Boko Haram in Nigeria. The findings indicate that the Boko Haram attacks had a negative effect on the livelihood of citizens and displaced persons in refugee camps, as well as on the social cohesion and development of the north‐eastern Nigerian state. Conflict resolution and intervention strategies will be implemented to curb the violence. Societal transformation is recommended for infrastructural development and job creation to solve poverty and gainfully cater for educated, unemployed youths, now recruited into the ranks of the Boko Haram Muslim sect.

This practical theological study examined the spiritual needs of outpatient palliative care patients. Focus group discussions were conducted with outpatient palliative care teams. They were asked about their experiences and observations. Theoretical foundations of spirituality and palliative care formed the framework for the evaluation of empirical research by using qualitative content analysis. Findings show that recognition of spiritual needs in patients poses a challenge to the majority of team members, as well as insecurities and problems in dealing with them. The observed spirituality is predominantly ecclesiastical and based on Christian elements such as prayers, faith and accompaniment by pastors. Team members address encounters, "being" and music as spiritual dimensions. There are also patients who have no spiritual needs. In future, practical theology could serve as a needs-based provision of competences, so that employees of health systems can be empowered to perceive, reflect on and adequately respond to the spiritual needs of their patients.
