Full textCult reliefs are composed of gods sculpted on various type of monuments. The catalog is composed of 236 items which are studied in 4 chapters based on the sorting out : material, iconographical, cultual and formal. The divinities are rendered on rectangular and square slabs, altars, architectural and rock reliefs. The "classical" iconography is used. However, new idols are created for some local deities indicating the persistence of indigenous cults and, on the other cases, the adoption of the greco-roman gods integrally or by syncretism. The shapes point out that the greco-roman styles prevailed over oriental and "parthian art" as well as on the use of geometric forms. In fact, this kind of sculpture reveals the interaction of different currents, local and foreign, in the area over centuries

Full textSacrificial rituals are often represented on historical reliefs from italy. The first monument to portray sacrifice dates from the en of the second century b. C. , the last from the beginning of the fourth century a. D. The examination of the reliefs ollows us to attain a betterknowledge of sacrificial rituals and to show that the discourse in images was different but notincompatible with that in writings. The major advantage of images is that they show the division of labour in the ritual. Thus they reveal the identities of the participants, their gestures and inter-relatons. However, the images present a different reality from that of the ritual, because they offer a synthesis of the sacrificial ceremony which corresponds to the choices of the sculptor and commissioner of the work. The reliefs carry a message about sacrifice, and also a message about its meaning and its importance in roman society. In fact, the sculpted representation of the ritual is the confirmation through images of the hierrarchical structure of roman society. To decipher the sacrificial images fully a system of reading has been devised : the basic principle is to incorporate in the reading of images the modern viewer who attemps to reconstruct in fact what the ancient viewer saw. It obliges one to think about readings of the image, and secondly about the relationships between the viewer, the image, the sculptor and the commissioner of the work

Full textPhysical models often represent landscapes, for artistic, educational and recreational purposes and are used by landscape professionals in training, design and communication. This research explores the link that connects the artistic answer to the complex and polysemic notion of landscape. In the first part of the thesis, once the terminology of the physical models in general has been analysed, their uses (Francastel) and affordances are later described in order to define the nature of this tool. The techno-aesthetics of Simondon offers the most accurate approximation of this multiform and versatile object. The second part is a critical exploration of the notions related to the four main stages of modelling enabling their productivity in the creative process : miniaturisation, tinkering, volume and fiction. Specific to landscape physical models, the third part brings up an anthropological view through different cultures, followed by a formal analysis of Isam Noguchi’s models (sculptor and landscape designer), with a focus on form shaping, and an analysis of the effective use of models, among other tools of representation in landscape projects. Models are next analysed along three lines: syncretism, relationship to site constitution and notion of feeling. This thesis introduces a number of theoretical tools (Straus, Ehrenzweig, Kaufmann…) to understand the formativity (Pareyson) of modelling and the tight connection that relates models and landscape to the ontological experience ; it concludes on the necessity of a plastic research based on fabrication

Full textThe subject of the thesis concerns the study of the middle-byzantine architectural sculpture of Epiros. All in all, 235 reliefs - of which 76 are unpublished - from the 10th to the 13th century are gathered in a catalogue. The history of the places from which the reliefs come has been studied in the first part of the thesis. The second part deals with the stones, the tools and the carving techniques used by the sculptor. The third part is a thorough study of the reliefs' patterns. These three parts of the thesis show the main characteristics of the mesobyzantine sculpture of Epiros. Beside the archaeological discoveries (sculptors' workshops, patterns' diffusion,. . . ). This study proves the existence of an urban development in epiros in the mesobyzantine period, before the birth of the despotate

Full textThe subject deals with the various type of sculpture (statuary, relieves, altars, broken pieces of architecture) in roman theatres and odeums in Gaul found in excavations. We have studied the sites: Arles, Orange, Vaison la Romaine, Lyon, Vienne, Apt, Trejus, Toulouse); the specific archaeological data of each buildings lead us to consider each of them as a particular case; the sculptures of these buildings are studied chronologically. The iconography is also examined (imperial portraits, divinities, mythological heroes)

Full textThe production of devotional reliefs flourished in 15th century Florence, where original marble models from Renaissance Masters were moulded to be reproduced in series. Among the materials mostly used to this purpose was the so-called “stucco”. Despite the wide diffusion of stucco reliefs, details concerning their constitutive materials and manufacturing processes are fragmentary and poorly studied. In the framework of a multidisciplinary project fostered by the Louvre Museum, this thesis explored three research lines in order to: 1) identify and characterise stucco mineral constituents; 2) determine raw material provenance; 3) investigate manufacturing techniques and serial casting processes.A multi-analytical approach was devised to investigate composition (SEM-EDX, PIXE, LA-ICP-MS) and structure (XRD, FEG-SEM, SµCT) of micro samples obtained from 30 representative artworks attributed to 7 Florentine Masters. Results showed that all the artworks are made of a gypsum based stucco (40-44 wt% CaO and 52-56 wt% SO3) with secondary mineral phases (anhydrite, calcite, dolomite, celestine and clay minerals) in few weight percentage maximum.PIXE and LA-ICP MS trace elements analyses, the study of W/P ratio and pores morphology by SEM-EDX and SµCT, pointed out that about 20 reliefs present similar compositional and structural parameters. This confirms the hypothesis of common practices and of a common production centre according to the Florentine attribution of the artworks.A geological survey was performed in 3 quarries in the surroundings of Florence and the provenance of the raw gypsum was investigated by means of geochemical and isotopic composition. In particular synsedimentary clay minerals with variable amounts of K, Mg and Fe, related trace elements (e.g. Ti and REE), and multi isotopic fingerprint (S, O, Sr) have been tested as provenance markers. Usefulness and pitfalls of the approach were verified through a first promising comparison with data obtained on stucco reliefs. Miocene quarries seems to have compatible signature with the ones measured on artworks.Nonetheless, small differences related both to accessory minerals proportions, to trace element contents, and to pores microstructures suggest that some of the stucco reliefs after models of Donatello and A. Rossellino might have been produced following different practices or particularly by using different raw materials. These evidences, corroborated by the activity of these artists in many Italian regions, raise the hypothesis of the production of these casts outside the Florentine area.In parallel, THz-TDI, Xray radiography and Computed Tomography were tested for the non-invasive investigation of the internal stratigraphy of plaster layers possibly revealing different manufacturing techniques. Finally, serial manufacturing techniques were investigated on 3 groups of replicas belonging to 3 models after Donatello & B. Bellano, D. da Settignano and A. Rossellino. Structured light 3D scanner and mesh comparison of the 3D models obtained on stucco casts proved to be a very useful tool. The method allowed to measure millimetric differences of shapes and topography among reliefs stored at the Louvre, Bargello and Bardini Museum. This helped to find direct correlations between casts, to verify which ones were most likely produced with the same mould, and to propose a chronology within the same casting series. Results obtained disclosed new and important insights on the practices of 15th century Florentine botteghe and on the manufacturing of these artworks. This work and the large set of data produced will also provide solid basis for further investigations and will hopefully prompt interest on this topic worth to be studied with increased attention
