Abstract:
This chapter explores the interactions between economic growth and human development, as measured by the Human Development Index, theoretically and empirically. Drawing on many studies it explores the links in two chains, from economic growth to human development, and from human development to growth. Econometric analysis establishes strong links between economic growth and human development, and intervening variables influencing the strength of the chains. Because of the complementary relationship, putting emphasis on economic growth alone is not a long-term viable strategy, as growth is likely to be impeded by failure on human development. The chapter classifies country performance in four ways: virtuous cycles where both growth and human development are successful; vicious cycles where both are weak; and lopsided ones where the economy is strong but human development is weak, or conversely ones where human development is strong but the economy is weak.

Edited by Philip M. Podsakoff, Scott B. Mackenzie, and Nathan P. Podsakoff. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190219000.013.26.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a comprehensive review of the relationships between different types of person–environment (PE) fit—namely person–organization, person–group, person–supervisor, and person–job—and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs). Relying on both affinity and exchange explanations, we demonstrate that individuals who experience good fit are more likely to engage in OCBs. However, the strength of the relationship is contingent on many factors, especially with regard to the operationalization of fit (the kind of fit measure used), the characteristics on which fit is assessed (e.g., values, goals, personality), the types of OCBs studied (overall OCBs, OCBs focused toward the organization, and OCBs focused toward individuals), the source of the ratings of OCBs (self-report versus others’ reports), and the level of analysis (individual vs. unit). Mediators and moderators of the PE fit–OCB relationship are also reviewed. We conclude with recommendations for future research to better understand the PE fit–OCB relationship.

Abstract:
Adolescents and emerging adults who engage in risky sexual behaviors (RSBs), such as inconsistent condom use, having multiple partners, having sex at a young age, and having sex while intoxicated or high, are at elevated risk of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and unplanned pregnancy. The chapter discusses the relationship of acculturation (along with associated intrapersonal and interpersonal mediators and moderators) with RSB outcomes. Acculturation can be a protective or risk-enhancing factor for RSBs among adolescents. Intrapersonal variables, such as academic achievement, sexual intention, and sexual health knowledge, and interpersonal variables, such as parent, peer, and partner relationships, can act as mediators between acculturation and RSBs. The strength of these relationships may be further moderated by religiosity and gender. Implications for future research and interventions are proposed.
