Abstract:
U.S. women’s peace and anti-war activism grew from their involvement in the abolition and suffrage movements of the nineteenth century, and some have continued to foster women-focused organizations in the twenty-first century. This chapter examines the relationship between the historical development of women’s peace activism and a U.S. political system that frequently excluded women from international relations. Women enlarged the U.S. peace movement’s objectives to include issues of gender, but while some also advocated for racial and class equality, minority activists often faced prejudice and discrimination within the movement. Several tensions in women’s peace activism are explored, including the ideological debate between essentialists and social constructionists about the relationship of gender to war, as well as strategic and tactical debates between proponents of institutional politics and proponents of radical protest tactics. Involvement in this movement helped enhance women’s political and organizing skills and often nourished other activism, especially feminist activism.

Abstract:
Does the nuclear balance of power matter for nuclear coercion? To answer this question, this chapter conducts a large-N statistical analysis, examining empirical evidence from high-stakes crises between nuclear-armed states. Drawing on a quantitative analysis of a data set of fifty-two nuclear crisis dyads that includes information on nuclear arsenal size and delivery vehicles, the chapter examines the impact of nuclear superiority on nuclear crisis outcomes. It finds a powerful relationship between nuclear superiority and victory in nuclear crises. Specifically, nuclear superior states are over ten times more likely than nuclear inferior states to achieve their basic goals in international crises. In sum, this chapter provides strong empirical support for the central argument of this book. Nuclear superiority matters not just for nuclear war outcomes but also in international crises between nuclear-armed adversaries.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews outcomes in children where parental separation has occurred and their complex determinants. As the title suggests, many children encounter parental relationship ruptures that do not involve legal marriage, although our body of research has narrowly focused on this category. This chapter overviews methods used for conducting evaluations with special attention to the more nuanced approach needed when the evaluation occurs in the context of legal actions where custody is being decided. Finally, it highlights intervention strategies that have been used to reduce risk to children and families as they make these transitions. Attention is paid to both psychological interventions and more macrolevel changes aimed to buffer economic costs. Throughout the chapter, data are presented on diversity issues. The lack of findings for fathers in each topic and on dissolution when racial minorities or same-sex couples are considered is highlighted.

Fletcher, Roland. Urban materialities: meaning, magnitude, friction, and outcomes. Edited by Dan Hicks and Mary C. Beaudry. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199218714.013.0020.

Full text
Abstract:
The materiality of urbanism encompasses the words and actions by which we relate ourselves to it, the economics of its creation and maintenance, the impact of the material on the viability of community life, and also the long-term trajectories of urban growth and decline. Archaeological approaches to urban materiality tend to focus on how people seek to use the material and also emphasize what the material meant, in verbal terms, to its users. This article focuses on urban materialities, its meaning, magnitude, friction, and outcomes. This article further discusses words, metaphors, and urban materials. In discussing metaphor the material scholars have recognized ‘an inherent problem in the precise relationship between a world of words and world of things’. This article discusses the process of analyzing transformation through time. A detailed analysis on the growth and changing trends in urban industrialization concludes this article.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a critical synthesis of the literature on the relationship between parent work family experiences and child outcomes. The chapter begins by introducing a theory-driven conceptual model that organizes previous studies. Then it discusses research on the direct link between parent work family experiences and child outcomes, followed by a review of mediators and moderators of the process. It next notes limitations of the extant literature and concludes with promising directions for future research.

Abstract:
This chapter surveys four overlapping contexts in which scholars have examined institutional interactions between U.S. courts and legislatures. First, some have sought to explain when and why judges exercise the power of judicial review by invalidating democratically enacted statutes. Second, “regime politics” scholars have examined the political foundations of judicial power over time, emphasizing that courts have developed, retained, and expanded the authority to alter policy outcomes only because (and to the extent that) governing legislative coalitions have supported these developments. Third, some scholars have examined the range of legislative responses to assertions of judicial power, emphasizing that the judicial interpretation or even invalidation of a legislative policy is often far from the final word on the policy conflict in question. Fourth, some scholars have advocated an “interbranch perspective” on the policy process. This fourth approach has significant potential to advance existing understandings of the relationship between courts and legislatures.

Abstract:
This chapter explores how the family finances are dealt with following the breakup between cohabitants in non-formal relationships. In particular, it considers property law disputes between cohabitants on relationship breakdown and the application of the law of trusts to determine the resolution of such disputes. As these are principles of general application which have not been designed specifically to deal with the financial consequences of relationship breakdown between cohabitants, the chapter highlights how they are generally regarded as inadequate to resolve family property disputes, producing unfair outcomes in certain situations.
